Xaden Riorson’s actions in Fourth Wing and Iron Flame both make more sense and become infinitely funnier when you remember that the man is 22-23 years old.

This man is AT BEST a first year grad student trying to finish compulsory military service in an active war zone while running the family business (ruling a legit kingdom) and taking on extracurriculars (leading a rebellion) as side hustles. On top of that there’s a literal plague of evil descending, institutional racism is against him, and his Situationship (calling Violet that cuz a lot happens there over two books and I’m trying to cover all the relationship levels) never seems to settle out for more than a month at a time.

Like, of course the decision making is not always on point. The man doesn’t even have a fully developed pre-frontal cortex yet and he hasn’t slept the recommended amount in 6 years.

yor coming home late from a dinner party or work event or something, a little drunk, tucking anya into bed. getting her all settled and reading her a story, tucking her in and sitting with her until she falls asleep.

and then going and doing it to her husband running off pure habit and instinct. poor loid has no idea what to do with this yes he does. he wants so badly to just give in and rest for once, but he cant do that. he's on the job. the fate of the world is at stake. he has no time to sleep when there's reports to be filled and plans to be made. he had to refuse to play with anya that afternoon. there's just too much to be done. her disappointed face almost made him damn the fate of the country.

he can't let yor go on like this. she needs to get to bed herself, a small part of him thinks it would be best if she got in his bed. that way he could keep an eye on her. he tamps out that thought quickly.

but yor is much stronger than he is, a fact that never ceases to amaze him. she picks him up and carries him to bed. being held in her arms that way definitely does not do things to his heart, obviously. he's a professional after all. a professional liar.

she tucks him in, wrapping him in blankets and warmth and safety in a way no one has in a very long time. loid expects her to leave after that, having completed her task, be she stays.

yor sits at the head of his bed, leaning back against the wall next to his pillow, placing his head by her hip. she sits with him, softly singing the same lullabies he hums to anya on particularly windy nights, when the russle of the trees sounds just a touch too similar to the whizzing of bombs through the air.

yor stays by his side, oh so gently pinning loid in place when he tries to get up and go back to work.

she places a hand on the crown of his head, delicate pressure keeping him by her side and subjugating him to the mercy of his pillows.

her fine boned yet calloused hand carding through his hair, sending his eyes sliding shut despite his best efforts. how the mighty have fallen. agent twilight, a top wise agent who's gone through years of training to resist anything, led into weakness by a soft touch. not just any touch. his wife. he'd never be so vulnerable with anyone else.

yor hums. and twilight rests.
