so if solas sees himself in the inquisitor because of how they were made a leader, a prophet and a symbol by people who followed them, just as fen'harel had been made a leader and a saviour for by the freed elven slaves, will he see himself in rook because they're left alone against the threat they can't possibly defeat without singlehandedly making decisions that will impact the world in unknown ways, just as fen'harel had been left alone against evanuris with no other option but to create the veil

"Handsome! Handsome! Handsome! Handsome! Handsome! Handsome! Handsome!"
#Handsome Solas#“Well better go greet the commoners."#Lavellan holding the door ready to slam it into his face like Spongebob#the entire muffled argument with Varric was just them arguing back and forth about what work he had done#tldr: he looks great but he's too handsome#he lost a whole lot of character in his face with this game imo#part of his charm was that he was just this guy who was super passionate about the fade and history and spirits#that was what made him compelling/attractive even before the big reveal at the end - until trespasser he was just Solas to our character#he wasn't super handsome - don't get me wrong he's attractive but datv took some liberties to make him *more* attractive#and i feel like they made him wayyy too conventionally handsome in this game and he lost out because of it#*he* was attractive by himself - he didn't need the face lift#he had a really unique face and simple outfits to sell this 'apostate hobo' persona / before switching to the cool trespasser armour#but it was still *his* face and its his face in a game in which your own character kind of loses their own as head of the inquisition#and that mirrors Solas and to me making him so hot does his character a disservice? I like his DAI design way more#matt rhodes concept art is also great - really does him good <3#(visual design in DAI was the best in the series to me - gorgeous direction <3)#anyway drawing this made me laugh lmao#solas dragon age#solas#my art <3#dragon age#da fanart#dragon age fan art

So, my kids enjoy torturing me, so they put on High School Musical 2 -- I will be putting on headphones and writing -- but first I had to watch the I Don't Dance scene, aka the best song about dismantling top/bottom stereotypes and gay sexual politics ever featured in a Disney movie.

Little idle thought I've been having recently but I think Cyparissus' story is very important for characterising Apollo and Apollo's love. It's so easy to think of love and loss as two ends of a spectrum, likewise, so often, death is seen as an ultimate and tragic end in love stories - something final and inescapably tragic, the only force that halts love by separating the lovers.
Cyparissus' story is... not that. Yes, the deer dies and one can conclude then that death is once more at the heart of separating two lovers, but I think Cyparissus specifically requesting to die, specifically begging Apollo to let him grieve forever even after Apollo has done his best to help Cyparissus move on from the accident and Apollo letting him is a powerful thing.
Because Apollo not only puts Cyparissus' wishes over his own, he's also able to see past his own building grief to immortalise Cyparissus in such a way that both grants him his wish and allows other people to glorify Cyparissus as well! And I think such a beautiful thing is something criminally overlooked!
It's become something of a joke that 'all Apollo's lovers turn into plants' but from a functional perspective, flowers are the most brilliant way to keep the spirit of a beloved thing alive. Flowers are like stars - as long as there are humans, humans will always contemplate the nature of flowers and as the god of poetry and song, Apollo creating opportunities for his beloved mortals to be remembered eternally even if they never seized glory in the traditional way is such an intimate and beautiful thing. Even then, Cyparissus is elevated to a similar status as Daphne with Apollo's actions - not merely a plant or flower but one that specifically symbolises him, one that is extremely fragrant and beloved by him. Just as Daphne's laurels were synonymous with glory and victory, Cyparissus' cypress became a emblematic of grief and remembrance. Even today, thousands of years later, people still view cypress trees as mourning trees and plant them in cemeteries and use the ash in incense burnt in remembrance of others. How's that for Apollo keeping his word.
#ginger rambles#I think we should talk more about how Apollo's ability to immortalise people into those coveted halls of memory is so often done out of love#and how it is the closest many of his beloved mortals will ever get to godhood but even that is leagues better than the hundreds of warriors#and kings and scholars who worked for glory their whole lives only to be forgotten and lost among the sea of time and history#And then you have Daphne and Hyacinthus and Coronis Cyparissus and Evadne even Branchus whose affair is marked with the sprawling arms#or trees and forests - who would ever say they were unloved?#Daphne is eternally interesting to me btw because like idk what anyone says it doesn't matter that Apollo was hexed to love her by Eros#Even if what Apollo felt wasn't 'true' love he did feel true regret and made real and true penitence. Apollo literally spent#the rest of his immortal days wearing Daphne's laurels and making her his symbol until she became so synonymous with gods and glory that she#became symbolic of the gods and their kings themselves! Like!! It's obscure knowledge now that gods like Zeus and Poseidon had their own#preferred plants to wear as wreath crowns because laurel-crown is so iconic as the Look of a greek god#how could you not see that as love? even if it's retroactive? Apollo worked so hard to give her the glory he robbed from her and people#still choose to focus on the chase + transformation and “oh well Apollo and Daphne wasn't a love story it was assault/a curse!!”#my brother in Christ it counted to Apollo so it counts to me too#anyway just something I've been thinking about#apollo#cyparissus#daphne#greek mythology#ginger chats about greek myths

As someone who has been in this fandom for a long time, I can assure you that the Marauders fandom pre-Jegulus also treated Lily very poorly. For example: Lili was often portrayed in fanfics as a completely humorless person who was a huge killjoy. Another very common thing was that her negative feelings for James were portrayed as a major flaw, several times a character would tell her: "Lily stop being a bitch James is amazing" It wasn't James who had to become a better person for Lily to like him, it was she who needed to wake up to the "great man" that James was. Another disgusting thing that was common in fanfics was locking Lily and James in a closet so that she would "accept her feelings for him" as if she had no right to choose. Her negative feelings for James were never valid either she was "too stupid to understand James" or they were "unresolved sexual tension."
Yes this is true! I've been in the fandom a while myself, but the era when I first started being active in specifically the jily fandom (2012-ish) coincided with the advent of third wave feminism and the MeToo movement, at least here on tumblr, so there wasn't as much of this in my personal experience or in my circles. By that time, usually anything outrageously misogynistic like that was quickly stamped on. And this predates Jegulus by a decade at least, so I think most of what you describe is pre-tumblr. Like Cassie Claire/livejournal-era LOL. Tbf idk what the fandom was like on other websites.
But that being said I think things did slip through the cracks even then, because misogyny is learnt and reproduced by everyone, and you could still see hints of what you describe in the fanfic that was being written at the time.
At this point the idea that James constantly asking her out and haranguing her was sexy was just starting to be questioned and pushed back against. Because those kinds of narratives were just starting to be questioned in general, similarly Snape's unrequited love for Lily started to be seen as less sympathetic and less romantic around the same time. So as I recall we started seeing more portrayals of James as Flawless Feminist King, which I now find unrealistic for a teenage boy in the 70s and a bit cringe lmao. I don't think he was harassing her but neither was he a virtuous woke paragon. Back then we were all (mostly) young girls/women writing our idea of the perfect man haha.
And obviously Woke King James was set against Evil Incel Snape (this was also around when the incel movement and bronies emerged, GamerGate happened, etc.) which led to the marauders/jily fandom largely justifying Snape being bullied, and this still happens today. (although these days he's also been upgraded to a raging homophobe lmao.) In my last post about that fan film I was complaining about the opposite haha, but for the record I've just had to close two separate jily fics earlier today for portrayals of Snape that were too one-dimensionally nasty for my tastes.
