The most recent episode of Interview with a Vampire let's us see Lestat's side of the story and see how it compares to Louis' accounting of their relationship. As a result, it reaffirms just how unreliable of a narrator Louis is, but it also further illuminates elements of his character that the director and writers have been playing with since the beginning of the show.
There's this part in the episode where Lestat turns to Louis and apologizes and it's framed with Lestat turned to Louis on one side and Claudia on his other side. They're the angel and devil on Louis' shoulders, but who is the angel and who is the devil? And as my friend said, Armand and Daniel are placed into that same dynamic with Louis later on. We are being asked to decide who to trust, who's telling the truth, who's the good guy, but the fact of unreliability robs us of that decision.
This whole story is about Louis, he's the protagonist, though not the narrator, and he is constantly being pulled in two directions, no matter when or where he is in his story. He's a mind split in two, divided by nature and circumstance. He's vampire and human, owner and owned, father and child, angel and devil. He's both telling the story and being told the story. His history is a story he tells himself, and as we've seen, sometimes that story is not whole.
Louis is the angel who saved Claudia from the fire but he's also the devil who sentenced her to an life of endless torment, the adult trapped in the body of a child. He's the angel who rescued Lestat from his grief and also the devil who abandoned him, who couldn't love him, could only kill and leave him.
He's pulled in two directions, internally and externally at all times and so it's no wonder that he feels the need to confess, first to the priest, then Daniel, and then Daniel again.
He's desperate to be heard, a Black man with power in Jim Crow America who's controlled by his position as someone with a seat at the table but one who will never be considered equal. He doesn't belong to the Black community or the white community, he can't. He acts as a go-between, a bridge, one who is pushed and pulled until he can't take it anymore. He's a fledgling child to an undead father, he's a young queer man discovering his sexual identity with an infinitely experienced partner. He's confessing because he wants to be absolved, that human part of him that was raised Catholic, that child who believed, he wants to be saved. He wants to be seen.
Louis wants to attain a forever life that is morally pure, but he can't. He's been soiled by sin, by "the devil," as he calls Lestat, and he can never be clean again. Deep down, I think he knows this, but he can't stop trying to repent. He tries to self-flagellate by staying with Lestat and then tries to repent by killing him, but can't actually follow through. He follows Claudia to Europe to try and assuage his guilt. He sets himself on fire, attempts to burn himself at the stake, to purify his body, rid himself of the dark gift.
Louis is a man endlessly trying to account for the pain he has caused and he ultimately fails, over and over again, because he can't get rid of what he is. A monster. He's an endlessly hungry monster. He's hungry for love, for respect, for power, for forgiveness, for death. He's a hole that can never be filled. He can never truly acquire any of those things because he will always be punishing himself for wanting and needing them in the first place. He will never truly believe he deserves them and as a result, can't accept them if they are ever offered. He can never be absolved for he has damned himself by accepting the dark gift and thus has tainted himself past the point of saving.

Here's Kingsley's redesign. The unexpected glow up!
Kingsley's whole arc is that his desire for justice and to protect everyone, awakens a rage within him. He also develops a kinda twisted sense of morality as time goes by. As he starts to believe the end justifies the means, and the only way to get the upper hand is to play the same game their enemies are playing. Whatever the costs. As mentioned in the plot synopsis, Kingsley is angry, mostly at himself for being so weak. He feels like he's not meant to lead if he doesn't have the strength to protect everyone. He must become stronger to defeat the YBA and all evil. This leads to him finding and injecting himself with Jojo's Chemical X serum.
This serum is unstable as it's been sitting dormant for so long, and would have killed him if Hank and the rest of the Technology Department didn't band together to save him. Though his case is way more complicated than they can handle, so Kingsley is under the care of Blossom and the VL's generous benefactor, Dexter. Kingsley wears Dexter's invention, the Vita-Pack, to track his vitals and forces him into a "Cool-Down Cycle" if he happens to approach his limit, as limit breaking could be catastrophic for him. He can reach Limit Break by overexerting himself or by being consume with an intense rage, which he is prone to under the serum. Being called weak is a big trigger for him.
He uses a bo staff he designed himself after being trained by Taiyang and Xiang. His super enhanced muscle memory allowed him to learn to fight quicker than normal, though he still prefers to use his mind to gain the upper hand.

okay this is so small but makes me really happy. taketora just got done talking about how much he admires tanaka and how cool and "manly" he is, which like makes sense right, both tanaka and taketora are always being shown as these like loud "boy's boys" archetypes who do everything with power, talk about girls, and emphasize "guts" and "manliness," so obviously taketora would respect tanaka
but then he immediately turns to also think about how much he admires fukunaga in the same way—fukunaga who doesn't display any of those same qualities that taketora was just admiring about tanaka. fukunaga is quiet, fairly low-key and doesn't flaunt anything ever. dude just goes around making weird puns that 1 people often barely even hear and 2 apparently seem to baffle everyone. but taketora sees all of that and sees how fukunaga still shows up and gets the job done more than successfully—he's one of the top point getters on the team—and taketora respects him for all of that, still calls him a "man's man" and tbh more than respects him, he admires him and sees him as a rival
and idk that just makes me happy, like 1 it's a nice small way of furudate saying that yeah "manly" is a thing that's important to taketora but it doesn't just mean one stereotypical thing—like it's showing that taketora isn't as one dimensional as we would have thought and that he sees things from multiple perspectives (we also saw this from him back during the whole "guts" thing with kenma and how he respects him too)—and it's also an example of seeing fukunaga from another perspective too. it's because he's so low-key that even we as readers have probably barely noticed how much of a rock he is for the team, but if you got back through their matches you can see how often he does score—he's quiet but he's always there. and i just like that furudate takes a moment to not only acknowledge fukunaga but to do it from taketora's pov in order to really hit it home to us how true it must be

i'm getting towards the end of the skypeia arc, & i'd like to say just how much i adore the way the female strawhats have been treated.
just... every aspect of how the way their characters have been previously contextualized influences the story-line is treated with a masterful amount of consideration. we're given so many layers to both of them that enrich not only their characters specifically, but the arc, and the one piece world as a whole. without nami & robin having their specific skills, and their specific values, without those being built upon, the story would have come to a halt.
you could not have skypeia without nami & robin being who they are as individuals. not just because they never would've gotten there without nami, but also because the way these women think is itself foundational to the machinations of the arc as a whole.
to be totally upfront, if you think any other strawhats were more central to the skypeia arc than nami & robin were you are full-on fucking lying to yourself.
#obligatory disclaimer that i’m aware luffy is the protagonist & a lot of interesting stuff is explored w him. this isn’t abt him though.#part of me wonders if this is an aspect of why people will write off this arc sometimes tbh... like that & the political themes.#but yeah anyway i get why people say that for all there are 100% misogynistic tendencies in oda's writing & character design#it is very very hard to say that he as an individual is an ideological misogynist. like the level of care he puts into his female cast mem#-ers generally speaking & how he approaches what existing as a multi-dimensional individual would look like in their specific contexts is#like... in a lot of ways still something that is unprecedented across all forms of media.#but also not the point but anyone who says nami in particular doesnt get real fights/is unskilled um... no you're wrong read her fight in#alabasta & then all of skypeia.#like in alabasta she takes on arguably a stronger opponent than sanji when considering the structuring of BW. not only that but she does s#with a weapon she has never used before while actively reading the instruction manual. and she WINS. she wins based on sheer intellect &#the ability to utilize skills the audience already knows she has. the pre-existing basic fighting skills she's introduced with are elabora#-ed upon by incorporating her skill w navigation. same with the way her cunning is used in skypeia to cover her lack of sheer brute. &#the best part about it is she's fucking tough in a way that makes sense! she isn't strong/weak just for the sake of positioning her as such#it is thoughtful & it strengthens her as a character rather than just like giving the power-scaler types smth to mindlessly chew on.#like do i wish nami got to fight more & take a more active role in that regard even if i don't think she needs to be a fighter in the same#sense as the monster trio? yes absolutely. i'm guessing this is going to be smth that bothers me potentially even more with robin.#but that does not mean her fights are not masterfully written when she gets them or that she isn't tough as a bag of nails.#respect my darling woman or die.#skypeia#nico robin#nami#grey's one piece tag

I think my least favorite take that I've been seeing about The Karate Kid is that Daniel and/or Ali are the villains in The Karate Kid and Johnny is totally innocent.
DID WE WATCH THE SAME MOVIE?
"Ali should have just talked to Johnny!"
"Daniel stole Johnny's girlfriend!"
"Daniel provoked him!"
"Ali turned them against each other!"
- Ali absolutely did not have to talk to Johnny on the beach. They'd been broken up for weeks at her own choice. We hear Tommy say about the break up that "[Ali broke up] but he didn't" meaning essentially that Ali broke up with him and Johnny didn't want to accept that/just thought they would get back together. Not to mention how aggressive that Johnny was on the beach. Riding down on his bike toward the group, grabbing the radio from her, shoving Danny. That was all Johnny.
- Again, Ali broke up with Johnny. They were not together. Just because he didn't want to let go of the relationship didn't mean that she had to pause her life or avoid a guy that she liked. Honestly the fact that Johnny was such a dick and didn't handle it well didn't make anything better. I wouldn't have wanted to get back together with him either if I broke up with him for his fighting/drinking and then he still keeps fighting/drinking. Daniel liked a girl. Literally nothing is wrong with that, especially when said girl is not dating Johnny!
- The only time that Daniel provoked a fight was Halloween and even then the action was not nearly the same as the reaction. On the beach, all he did was try to give Ali her radio back which resulted in Johnny shoving him to the ground. Yeah Daniel got up and charged him, but Johnny is the one who hit first. He took "strike first" very seriously. Danny actively avoided the Cobra's at school on the first day, but they still targeted him in gym (again we see Daniel who doesn't just take that shit trying to defend himself) and in the deleted scene in the lunch room. Then again when the cobras very literally RUN HIM OFF THE ROAD on motorcycles and send him tumbling down a hill. Literally so dangerous! Then, yes, Danny is the one who started it at the Halloween dance, but getting a guy a little wet is nowhere on the same level as beating a guy to an unconscious state and only stopping when someone interferes! In the bts they literally say that whether he realized it or not Johnny was probably going to end up killing Danny! This is not an appropriate reaction at all! Especially compared to how Danny has reacted to literally getting targeted and beaten!
- Ali did not turn them against each other! Johnny did that by being an asshole who hold harsh grudges. Like Ali is straight on still friendly with Johnny, only getting on to him when he's beaten or messed with Danny! The scene at golf n stuff proved that. In my opinion she was probably a little TOO friendly with Johnny, but she absolutely did not turn them against each other. They probably could have been friends in Johnny wasn't such a jealous prick at times.
Don't get me wrong, I love Johnny, but he's a much more interesting character when you look at him as an abused and scared teenager who hides that behind his rage and anger. And, even further, its more interesting when looking at the way that he handles the kids in Cobra Kai and makes him look back at himself and realize that maybe he wasn't in a good place at the time and that cobra kai turned him into something he didn't want to be.

Here's a soft uwuwu HC as well to, uh... even the asshole/nice scale? Jk, no, it probably won't. Anyway
He likes watching the birds on his balcony in the morning. Every now and then, he'll scatter some breadcrumbs along the balustrade for them.

GUYS WE'VE GOTTEN TO THE BEST CHARACTER EVER, WE'VE FUCKING WON
DIZZY, MY BOY EVER!!
THE SPINNING LOBSTER DOG CREATURE DEMON THING-
The incarnation of gluttony compressed into a form able to be perceived.
That form just happens to be a sentient toy dog.
Spinning creature.
Originally openly marketed as a children's toy but was ultimately recalled due to child endangerment and death.
By that, I mean those children were literally eaten.
Attaches onto people and becomes easily jealous and infuriated when he believes they've abandoned him.
Like children finding another favorite toy.
Despite his adorable looks, he is a literal demon, a hungry one at that.
Can and will eat everything and anything.
Corrupted contortionist.
The stars that orbit around his head change with his emotions.
His colors can also change by emotion aswell.
Defies gravity and all laws of physics.
Ate a fridge.
Able to detach his own limbs.
Lobster tail moment.
Can and will sneeze and blast off into the sky.
Is an anomaly that nobody can explain.
Exists to confuse and devour.
Transends dimensions and reality.
He has eyes everywhere and he is always watching.
His true form is something that cannot be comprehended by the normal eye.
Glitching noises.
Did I mention, he's always watching?
:)

“I have a job. In the beginning, I thought it was important, that it could help a lot of people, hopefully even bring my wife back to me. But no matter what I do, nothing gets better. If anything, it only gets worse.” - Garcia Flynn, Timeless, S1 ep. 15 “Public Enemy No.1″

i love fucked up characters so much, i love characters who are messy and so imperfect but don't even necessarily try to fix their imperfections because they're human and their imperfections are part of them, other people can try to fix them and maybe even they go through phases of trying to cut these pieces from themselves but they're so. so painfully human. they will never be perfect. they do things wrong and they hurt people and they hurt themselves and some of the pain will never be fixed and nothing is ever just easy. i love characters that reflect the messy existence of being human so beautifully. i also love characters who are all of this and know it inside but try to hide it because they know the imperfections are ugly and hard to deal with and it's easier for everyone and themselves if they try to be perfect

dark x men is actually kind of campy tbh. one thing is im a little annoyed at how like, over the top Kenji's silliness is, but he is definitely a bit of a silly, over the top character. I guess I just miss when he was a bit more somber to balance out his dark silliness, also he seems kind of dumbed down? he was pretty intellectual in generation hope. idk mixed feelings!

HI CEEEEE HAPPY BLORBO THURSDAYYY what is one thing that might surprise us about Quil? :3
hiiii thanks for the ask<33
part of me wants so say 'well it won't be a surprise then if I Tell you', but I'm already saying so much anyway, so whatever lollll
what might surprise you about him is his uhhh not entirely sure what word to use here... 'promiscuity' isn't entirely right, but a similar vibe. on all accounts, he's very prim and proper, so you'd think he'd get scandalized or embarrassed easily by more intimate things, but no lol. he knows what he wants and how to get it, and has no reservations about it<3 Endra, on the other hand....lmao

You’re right on the money. That’s him. Anji “Sex With a Man” Mito.
He’s bisexual so it’s more like “sex with a man and a woman” but I digress.
