there seems to be far too many fans who can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that no relationship in the Vampire Chronicles is healthy. every relationship includes an element of abuse/power imbalance by normal standards. literally every single one.
they are all monsters who are no longer constrained by societal rules. so I don't think it's too crazy to expect them to do mosntorus things. the genre is Gothic HORROR. the show really prioritizes the HORROR element more so than other adaptaions, which i love.
i don't need louis to be a liar to enjoy lestat. if louis lied or misremebered things about the fight in episode 5, i literally do not care because it's never gonna make me hate louis. the baseline of what constitutes "evil" or "bad" is so different in iwtv because of the fact that they are NOT HUMAN. Claudia is literally a serial killer and she's still mother to me. ykwim?
the nature of vampirism is they have to kill to survive. so it would be really cool if people could accept louis, armand, and claudia as complex characters who are fundamentally not good people (because they aren't people!) without being racist about it. THEY ARE ALL KILLERS
im more interested in this exploration of the complexities of memory and seeing how the show integrates the other books into this story in a way that hasn't been done before than I am in discoursing about whether louis is a liar or not. who gives a shit???? grow up and realize that there are no good guys here and that's OKAY

Nienna about to strangle anyone who says that orcs are unredeemable or shouldn't be pitied.
Tumblr media
seeing wayyyyyy to many so called “fans” on twitter saying that orcs are “ontologically evil”. Tolkien was catholic and ontological evil doesn't exist according to catholic doctrine, since evil is defined as the absence of good so pure evil is just nothingness.
also orcs have souls and only God/Eru can create souls according to the silm, and all souls have some amount of free will to choose between good and evil.
and God/Eru loves all his children, he wouldn't create a soul that is going to be evil with no hope of redemption and salvation. that would be a Calvinist heresy.
that is why Tolkien struggled with the origins of the orcs so much in his later writings and regretted how they had been written.
there are a LOT of things to criticize in rings of power, but humanizing the orcs is not one of them.

Being back in the Dragon Age fandom has awakened something long asleep within me, which is a seething deep, feral hatred and disgust for Cullen and dismay at the way everyone in the fandom is head over heels for him. Literally it's as fresh as it was on the first day. Truly, things you feel at 15 years old do not wane.
#dragon age#i just... there are other let's say problematic white men who are problematic characters#aka anders and solas lol#that the fandom has been and is obsessed with and they coddle them like uwu my tortured boy can do no wrong#and like while that is sometimes a bit annoying#and alienating when you keep finding people who seem to believe the one correct way to play the game is to romance X character#bc all the content is fucking about them!! ugh it seems like other romances do not exist#but at least then i can tolerate it bc like#i enjoy anders and solas as characters#i get them they're flawed and can be downright horrible at times (I don't mean anders blowing up the chantry btw i mean how fucking cruel#he is to others in game)#but i get it#but not with that man!!#they only kept him in da2 and dai because idiots romantized the shit out of a very fucked up situation in the mage origin#then he became even more horrible in da2!!#and THEN in dai they just whitewash him and instead of properly redeeming him they just ignore everything bad he ever did#and that's when they add the romance option#a romance option that is kind of a joke seeing as he's still hung up on female amell/surana from like ten years ago#he even asks a romance leliana about her and will say shit like maybe me and hof would have had a chance like hello???#also his type is just... amell/surana copies he is a racist piece of shit who only likes human and elf women like hello???#and the straight girls just ate it the fuck up because there's nothing more they love than the fantasy that they can redeem an evil man#but like you're romanticizing the hell out of a prison guard/inmate situation like get help

i'm for sure not finishing veilguard. i set it down a while and tried again and ahh i'm just not enjoying it. the characters dont have a depth im looking for.. the insertion of a writer's white guilt onto the elves that are based on real life indigenous people and have been in-games enslaved and treated horrifically and are the ones who don't have "real" gods that are actually just blighted tyrants. everything with taash and the qunari. the gameplay was fun for a while but then it made my hand so numb i couldnt do anything for a week. the last straw was taash's gender talk that suddenly turned into picking a cultural identity for them to align with out of nowhere and then soon after learning that Another antagonist is of course an elf. starting to feel like their implying that all elves become evil when given power jfc. i think i'm actually done with it it started making me feel gross and bored. i don't care if you enjoy it or not, everyone's got a different threshold it just crossed mine.
#i wish i'd told my brother to not get it for me but he was so excited to get me a gift. i would have rather pirated it#i wanted to be hopeful they'd have made more strides since dai since it had seemed to be getting better ish.#but the bioware team clearly don't think mulicultural people are 'true to themselves' or that arab people are well. People.#or that anyone could enjoy and align with the religion that is heavily modeled after islam. ofc it's just stifling and constraining right.#everyone who follows it is evil and awful and the fucking. blighted qunari turning into literal giant monsters when nobody else is affected#like that. what the Fuck.#how did it get More racist than dragon age 2.#anyway. long chatter short i think my final personal onion is that i do not like the game and i kind of wish it didnt exist. thumbs up#there's cool concepts in there but.. the racism got Worse. the established lore was tossed out the window. the music is forgettable.#the pacing is off. the therapy talk gets annoying after a while. my favorite things are: davrin and assan. davrin is so funny also his bo#also neve. i love neve i wish her story was more..... More. i like that she got upset at her city being destroyed even though she didnt#want to blame my character she couldnt help herself from blaming him. mixed feelings on how gender is incorporated. could be better but it'#good for a triple a game. wish they used the established in-universe terms for being trans but eh.#i wish the world wasn't so sanititized down. it feels like a desire for everything to be 'good' and perfect but it makes it feel hollow#and like a kind of immature unwillingness to tackle hard subjects but well. that's a running theme of the lead writer of this game lmao

There’s something I've been meaning to say but I haven't had the words till now. There is something that deeply upsets me about witnessing stories where villains, who are literal killers, fall in love and somehow become good or act outside of what is expected from them. I love love, love is beautfiul, it is powerful and it can truly change a lot. But to sit, and write a killer suddenly go "actually, this one can stay because I am in love for the first time" is such a weird concept to me. Is this happening because as a sociaty we're trying to convince ourselves that deeply disturbed people can be cured by the power of love? That if they just find the right person, they would stop the masacer? or at least no longer feel the need to kill how they were or at least let their person live? And I am not mad at the love, I do belive anyone can fall deeply in love, but my issue is with how it ends. I want to witness the unthinkable — I want to see is exactly what we expect but hoped won't happen, happening. A gut wrenching truth that stays true to who we have been witnessing, despite the "I can change them" dance. And perhaps people hate this idea because they want to belive that anyone can change if only they meet the right one, or that we can change the monsters in our lives with affection, but trust most likly is that they cannot be changed. And I can understand that to some this is then seen as an illusion. "oh then this was never true love", why can the two not exist? Do we not hurt those we love? Maybe not kill them, but someone elses hurt could feel like a small death to me, and vice versa.
Examples, so that you are not confused as to what I am reffering too;
Killing Eve; I stopped watching when Villanelle was shown shooting Eve. It felt true to her character, even if it hurt. She is a killer, we knew that and so did Eve. Regardless of her love, that was what was always going to happen so why were we given additional seaons of this fanatsy of a declawed Villanelle?
Hannibal; It should have ended with the death of Will, and possibly Hannibal consuming him. Didn't Hannibal say that the consumption of Will would somehow join them in a deeper way?Something so disturbing that only could make sense to a serial killing-cannibal. And I would have watched with wide eyes, and gone to sleep staring at the ceiling.
Interveiw With The Vampire; Louis' death in the hand of a Lestat would have made sense, and despite his dramatics, Lestat would have not committed suicide but instead burried himself in deep regret untill he was too numb to his own feelings that he could return to the world of the living. He would have never forgotten Louis, nor what he did, but he would have moved on beause Lestat is not a good person. He's deeply disturbed and Louis knew this. I don't even aknoclege that beatdown episode because Lestat may be a killer, but he's a drama queen first and formost. Louis' death would have been poetic, beautiful and grusom like a greek tragedy without an audiance.
Bonus - Twilight; I could not end without adding my own favorite, and despite this path never being teased to the audiance the same way the other's were, I would have loved the book simply ending because Edward did as he said he would - drained Bella like a Caprisun on a hot summer day. Because what is love agaisnt animalistic urgase (I understand why it is much hotter that he is simply so retsrained and devoted that he resists her, but I'd pay good money for an AU)
At the end of it all, I think want I want is for sociaty to get over the idea that a good woman, love or any form of kindness can change who some people are. Love can do many things - look at crimes of passion! And to some extend I belive that these villain's love were true, possibly not the way we imagine them - which is less so "I love you too" and more so, "wow, finally someone I can manipulate and obsess over. Someone who I can mold, someone who is alone in the world like me" only to realize that is not true.
So why do we make love into what it isnt? Even when the scene is set for us to be shown the truth, writers and the audiance always make the plot lean towards whatever fits so that we can have that "happy ending".
Honorable mentions;
God should have killed Lucifer, I know the bible and christianity is not technically fiction for all, but the idea that he is forgivin but lets the biggest meanness HE CREATED terrorize everybody is evil. Take him out or let somebody else do it homie.

my various mental issues make liking people so hard because i already put people on a pedestal to begin with if i genuinely like them so i am automatically laying myself at their feet like a dog but then i wrestle with the ego death of seeing that they're just a human being who is capable of being wrong and stupid and annoying me and it kind of makes me sick to my stomach not because i expect people to be perfect but because i know if i had like 5 minutes to sit down and talk to this person i would feel more secure in knowing where they stand on any given thing. but you aren't granted that when you just like some random guy who will never know you because you can't take the feeling of someone who could actually know you. or whatever.
#i like a jewish man who made one vaguely ignorant comment about what's going on Over There and has said nothing on the topic since#he's kind of known for being someone who... likes to look out for the 'little guy' but knowing jews who place too much stake in the concept#of israel and having a place they 'belong' and having fought with people who believe that there are various kinds of zionism and not just#the outright evil one where people assuming their religion gives them the birthright to displace and genocide an entire group of people#and obvious this topic hits way too close to home as a jewish person like i just don't understand how jewish people are okay with it#obviously not all of them are. and thank goodness. because you have to be an idiot to sign off on anything a violent group of white racists#tell you to believe. in MY opinion. but this whole thing has just really hurt me deeply and wounded my willingness to identify with#judaism and my jewishness. which sucks. but obviously it sucks way more for the people who have been consistently and violently slaughtered#it's definitely testing my resilience and nerves and i think to some degree it's part of why i haven't even bothered bringing him up becaus#i'm so sick of giving my fellow white jews the benefit of the doubt about their stance on israel. if you don't see it for what it is by now#you're STUPID!!!!!!!!! and i want to be like. well all he did was say smth back when hamas took hostages and whatever but at the same time#he's a jewish nepo baby with a famous mother so he was obviously raised with no shortage of wealth#and - in knowing that#i also know that ignorance runs rampant in rich families who don't bother to look into issues within their own community. and he's never#had to think about the violence that the people have endured due to a settler colony thinking they own the place. the only things i knew#about israel before last year were that they sucked ass and that their military is well-funded and obligatory. if you have eyes and you're#not in an internet echo chamber at THIS point? you know they don't just suck ass but that they are evil. i knew about the occupation and#constant violence all the way back as a teenager because of tumblr (which is kind of insane ngl) and when i found out i was jewish i had#literally no new feelings about israel whatsoever. the persecution complex some jews have about ppl's hatred for israel makes me insane bc#it's literally just a bunch of losers who moved from their ACTUAL birthplaces into a place they have no business being and acting like they#own it and belong there. i have no idea how people feel welcomed by a place like that simply bc you all have the same ethnicity/religion.#it almost feels like a cult and considering that it takes so much inspo from america i honestly wholeheartedly believe that bc it's exactly#how they operate. anyways. all this to say he's not a perfect guy by any means and he's probably at least a little fucking stupid and#brainrotted bc he's rich. idk what else to say bc i don't wanna show my hand or anything on this like i'm very aware this whole thing is#pointless. but alas... that's most of my life!

12 hours after the amazing digital circus episode 2 airs, I see a video on youtube entitled "THEY RUINED JAX!!! 😡"
Like, chill! They literally haven't even finished SHOWING US Jax!! 😂 He's still only had a few dozen lines! I'm sorry about the Jax in your headcanon that you've been growing in the space between episodes, but I don't think there's been enough time to ruin that rabbit yet! 😅

Shadows of Fear: Repent at Leisure (1.5, Thames, 1971)
"Poor Robert. Do you remember what the doctor said? He'd never seen such an advanced cirrhosis in someone so young. He had a liver like a Strasbourg goose."
"Occupational hazard."
"How'd you think that made me feel? It isn't very flattering for a wife to play second fiddle to a wine list."
"I'm sure it was no reflection on you."
"All the same. I hardly changed the pattern of his life, did I?"
"No... but you're asking Harry to make fantastic adjustments. From galley to, uh, captain's table."
"You're a terrible snob, Peter."
"Oh, I am. So are you, my pet. That's what frightens me."
#shadows of fear#repent at leisure#single play#horror tv#classic tv#1971#kim mills#roger marshall#elizabeth sellars#george sewell#alethea charlton#peter cellier#series producer Mills takes directing duties and would helm the lion's share of the series from this point on; shades of trouble behind the#scenes? or another budget constraint? pure guesswork of course; as i said in an earlier set of tags‚ there's precious little info out there#about the production of this series. writer Marshall would have known Mills well from their time together on Public Eye (an ongoing#collaboration in fact). Marshall had written the first episode of this series (or pilot as it probably was) and that's the episode this#most closely resembles; it's less consciously 'horror' telly than the previous few and much more in the way of social suspense#it also seems a little stretched thin‚ again like the pilot: the plot is an old ham‚ a wealthy widow marries a steward from a cruise ship#and the scene is set for class based conflict and the whiff of a plan to do away with the lady and inherit a fortune... so far so blah#BUT i will say this one actually has a fairly excellent twist; a twist on a twist perhaps‚ or an Untwist. you see (SPOILER) George Sewell's#working class husband is actually... exactly who he says he is. and the murder plot in Liz Sellars' mind is‚ indeed‚ just in her mind.#unpacking this hoary old plot in a realist manner (but still with the called for suspense) is a smart move‚ but particularly impressive is#the explanation Marshall gives for Sewell's mysterious behaviour: his sister is in an interracial marriage and he suspects that the upper#class Sellars is probably a racist who'd react badly. i haven't time to fully unspool that (why marry her‚ is the obvious question) but i#do think it's a scripting masterstroke: it instantly reconfigures our sympathies towards the characters‚ makes Liz not just foolish (for#suspecting a murder plot) but an unsympathetic antagonist. in a few lines in one scene we suddenly see both her and Sewell in completely#different lights‚ and our allegiances are instantly changed. from that point on the horror is not what might happen to her because of his#'evil'‚ but what might happen to him because of her ignorance and neuroses. it's clever! and makes for a play that's much more satisfying#in its second half

2023 reads // twitter thread
The Sun and The Void
Venezuelan inspired high fantasy
follows a young outcast swordswoman taken in by her grandmother, the dark sorceress for a noble family, who relies on the magic to keep her alive after being attacked by monstrous creatures
and a young noblewoman who’s the shame of her family because of her mixed heritage and desire to use magic
both are manipulated by those with more power than them into a plot to free an ancient evil god
mineral based magic, politics, nonhuman MCs
#The Sun and The Void#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#hm. haha. surface level this is kinda interesting and cool but i am going to follow with so many complaints#though I feel like it didn’t go into the magic or worldbuilding as much as I wanted and it felt irrelevant to the characters#like how does the magic even work? idk man#though I feel like it didn’t go into it as much as I wanted and it felt irrelevant to the characters#very slow to start and the pacing is weird. it would also go ages without having the other POV. very disjointed?#it felt like the first 60% was just context for the group of characters getting together as a group and then it was a bit predisposed with#They’re A Group! even tho. they're barely a group for long#the authors note mentions that the story concept started with a line about the god and ritual and…..yeah I can kind of tell#I feel like everything was built up around it in a way that ultimately that part didn’t fit right#I never bought that any of them were actually like fully committed to the evil dark magic? and also there’s this plot twist#that they have to fully kill the sacrifices & I was like…did we not already know that? girl r you stupid what do you think sacrifice means#also#oh my god at like half way one of the MCs is like. oh finally this guy who I’ve been exchanging letters with for months turned up to get me#away from here! by the way I’ve been exchanging letters with this guy and we’re friends! and like. she’d been doing nothing much for the#last 10% of the book why was that not like….shown as something she was doing? and like build up the friendship for the reader instead of#just dropping it on us - and also that we know the character from the other POV. and hes a racist prick. and we're supposed to believe she'#charmed by him because of this letter writing WE DIDN’T SEE….. why.#and then also that is like. he’s a shitbag and it’s obviously not romantic at all. he’s manipulative and terrible to her#EXCEPT at the end it implies his bad behaviour is because demon and oh uwu he gets all beat up and maybe hes sowwy now#and starts to imply she likes and is attracted to him? and I get the impression the next book is gonna be like evil power couple dynamic?#which. feels like the first concept the author had; and then tried to build up to that but not effectively lmao#for the lesbians:#I DO APPRECIATE having an assumed love interest then realising that that was idealised and actually you have feelings#for this other person you’ve become friends with! nice slow switch up. though quite brief#I do however dislike that when she admitted her feelings to the first LI and she rejected her it was still framed as the other’s fault#for not reciprocating the feelings….worst trope….also like. it kind of conflated her not feeling that way to her having a bit of class disc#which. yikes? oh my god stop villainising people for not reciprocating romantic feelings (ALSO they turn out to be related anyway 🤪)#i just feel like the romance switchover could have been done with more nuance and complexity

that post is about how embarrassing it is to be a fnaf fan when the creator is such a bigot who uses the money generated by the franchise to fund racism and transphobia among other things. i.e. like JKR and harry potter. it's not about how you're quirky for liking fnaf instead of harry potter. very much the opposite.
It was definitely meant to be a dunk but I did forget my tone tags and that this is the reading comprehension site, sorry about that. Here you go!

Hope this helped clear up any miscommunication!

Also for the record I think the way Skyward Sword handles its theme of destiny is lame and I really don't care for it. However refusing to engage with it in analysis of canon seems silly, so I'm willing to put my personal opinion on that theme aside to engage with the story on its own terms, like a proper literature nerd.
