Headcannon :
Alright bitches, youā€™ve opened this can of worms, so here comes me divulging my entire Pinterest board and headcannon collection.
Christine <3
Tumblr media
Katrina - ?? - Frodo
The first two characters are more visual headcannons, especially the latter. Frodo, however, is the one I feel represents my Christine most. His entire story talks on themes of mental strife, and how his compassion and inner strength are the true heroā€™s of the story.
Frodo in the movies has such a gentle voice, and itā€™s exactly how I imagine hers, if not genderswapped.
Meanwhile Katrina has the pale, blond-haired, gothic inspirations that I tend towards. I basically rip my color pallete from her, haha!
Erikā€¦
Tumblr media
Peter Cushing - Misfits - Christopher Lee
I make my Erik look as if he belongs in a black and white horror movie as much I can. I hope this gets across, but often I feel my design for him leaves me wanting for more. If I could change anything, it would be his shape language. All in all, however, I believe people enjoy him, so Iā€™m happy at that.
Andā€¦ the misfits skull. Iā€™m not even a misfits fan so I feel like such a cheat. I just came upon him and, by gosh, I fell in love. It was everything my brain dreamed up when I read the novel as a child.
Raoul :)
Tumblr media
Vronsky - Samwise - Gregory Peck
Vronsky was an obvious choice. The pretty boy to trump all pretty boys. That little mustache he has is, without a doubt, EXACTLY how I imagine Raouls stacheā€™.
Samwise, however, (and I apologize for flooding you with my LOTR x POTO mashup from hell) represents an understated part of his character. Itā€™s always heart warming when heā€™s depicted as a support to Christine. He might not get everything right, but should Christine need it, he would risk life and limb to assure her safety. I think itā€™s sweet sā€™all.
Also Gregory Peck is here because heā€™s got.

What do you think of jkr as a writer? I for one has always felt like she didnā€™t treat her female characters well. It felt strange, being critical of her when she was god queen of the earth, and also being 10
I think most of the problems in her books can be chalked up to genre hopping. Books 1-3 are perfectly good and serviceable children's books ā€” great children's books, even! They have compelling, relatable characters and juicy mystery plots. They have problems, sure, but for the first three books someone's ever written ā€” especially someone with little or no background in creative writing ā€” they're really fucking good. So: there's her flowers.
The last four books pivot sharply into much more emotionally complicated and sociopolitically loaded territory, because they're describing a war. And it's hard to write children's books about war. I would venture you can't really do it, at least without dramatically misrepresenting what war is! And so Rowling makes the executive decision somewhere during the writing of Book 4 that she's not going to flinch away from that, she's going to go for dramatic realism, and she kills Cedric Diggory to let us know. People had died in Harry Potter before, of courseĀ ā€” Quirrell gets sent to the fucking shadow realm, for example. But children haven't. (It also gives parents who are reading these books with their children a warning shot: shit is about to get significantly more real, think twice before you buy the next one of these for your 10-year-old.) After that, Rowling starts leaning much more into dramatic realism, and the fast-paced mystery-novel plotting of the first few books is replaced by a slow, simmering political conflict that unfurls over the course of about a million words.
The problem ā€” besides the fact that she's picking one of the hardest things to write about, like, in all of literature, war is really insanely complicated and emotionally intense and hard to portray well ā€” is that she's now trying to use characters, plot points, and technologies she developed for a children's series to enact a sprawling war drama among teenagers and adults. So Hermione, who was a reasonably precocious snobby eleven-year-old, becomes this sort of encyclopedic all-knowing savant of the wizarding world, who somehow remains functional and mostly even-headed despite her identity being the chief target of a prolifically murderous terrorist group. Draco Malfoy, a schoolyard bully whose primary tools included 1. namecalling and 2. telling teacher, JOINS said terrorist group (and admittedly does react reasonably, i.e., has a total crashout and takes to sobbing in a girls' bathroom whenever he gets a free minute). Dumbledore, who starts out as "whimsical friendly winky-wink trustworthy grandfather type", ends up being Magical Winston Churchill in a violent game of spycraft and espionage, eventually revealing he's only been keeping Harry at all these seven years because he wants to KILL him! And like, maybe really good technical writing could smooth out these transitions and make the first-order dramatic choices seem more natural, but Rowling is like, a Fine Writer, technically speaking. meaning she's reasonably consistent in characterization, her plotting is well-paced and believable, she has a clear authorial voice, and her prose is readable. personally, that's not enough to get me to buy into some of the changes that happen in the later books, and because she stuffs these things so full with new elements every installment, a lot of stuff ends up getting glossed over.
And like, I still love the books. I think they're wonderful, and they taught me how to read. but i can say that and also say that Rowling probably did herself a disservice by trying to write four giant war novels as sequels to her first three mystery children's books.
#i have this running theory that debut fantasy writers shoot themselves in the feet by trying to be tolkien#i.e. assuming because they're writing fantasy they have to write about war#but he wrote that because that was what he liked reading! it was what he thought a mythological epic should be#at the time LOTR was a WEIRD pitch for a book#fantasy was much more small-scale adventure like Lewis's Narnia books (which also end in a giant battle but like)#(it's not really the same thing. narnia doesn't run on realpolitik)#(it's Narnia)#I'd compare it to swiss family robinson and treasure island and the adventure stories of Jules Verne#then tolkien comes along and is like. WHAM. Bitch I Put Elves In The Somme#and everyone was like ??? HOT DAMN#but the thing is. once you've seen Elves In The Somme. and it's THAT good. the Hot Damn effect wears off some#so all these fantasy authors start writing vaguely medieval war stories because that's what Tolkien did! and they love him!#but the difference between mimicry and inspiration is your willingness to depart from the source#there are a lot of other plots out there! hundreds! thousands even!!#harry potter books you didn't need to do this! harry potter you could have just been cool mysteries!#but i dunno maybe people started talking about her as the next tolkien and she got scared of disappointing them#and like having said all that. considering the obvious anxiety of influence and the genre hop and the rough technical spots.#the harry potter books are REMARKABLY good.#what you have in them is an author's first attempt at longform serial storytelling EVER#and it's ambitious as hell and it has a billion characters and you know what? she mostly pulls it off!#we rag on it for being messy at the edges because It Is and I wouldn't be writing fanfic if I didn't have some qualms#or at least areas I think could bear more explaining. but there are Reasons it went that way

After Draco lied to his family and the snatchers about Harry being Harry - The Malfoy Manor
Lucius: So it was Harry Potter we just let escapeā€¦Draco you do realise that we are going to get punished for your stupidity?
Draco: ā€¦
Lucius: Why would you lie to us if you clearly knew what Potter looked like? Donā€™t you want Potter dead and us being alive and back to power?
Draco: ā€¦
After Harry risked his, Ronā€™s and Hermioneā€™s lives to save Draco from FiendFyre in Room of Requirements
Ron: So we almost just bloody died because you decided to save that git - Malfoy?
Hermione: Harry, seriously, what was that about?
Harry: ā€¦
Ron: I swear to Merlin if youā€™re going to make us save his sorry arse once again Iā€™m going to lose it!
Harry: ā€¦

It's so wild to me that so many people HC Leon and Hop as not having had a close relationship when multiple forms of canon (the game AND PokeAni) have literally said that Leon practically raised Hop. Despite there being three adults in the house that can do it. And Leon being a child when Hop was born. And away from home a majority of the time.
You know--healthy family dynamics and all of that. (coughtheirmotheristrashcough)
The point is that Leon managed to raise his brother from kilometers away, and you cannot convince me that he didn't have Hop shipped out to wherever he was based in Galar during the summer months to stay with him. He absolutely tried to call Hop every night and would video chat with him to help him with his homework. Sometimes he even had Hop come stay with him during holidays because their mother is trash. He did his best to make it to Hop's plays and school events and would send Sonia and Professor Magnolia when he couldn't make it himself. If he couldn't see Hop for his birthday, he would express ship a gift and have Sonia deliver it, along with a box of cookies.
Is it right? No. Healthy? Also no. But I have to say that Hop turned out pretty damn well for being raised by someone who was barely able to come home and also only 10 years older than him. Leon really does not get enough credit and that's depressing to me.

shogun (book) does the 'characters speaking in multiple languages' thing the best ive ever seen its so fuckign. the 'defaults' are typically either portugese or japanese and so those are written normally, with the exception that the japanese we hear from blackthornes perspective is either unintelligible (not direct quotes) or short words and phrases that he picks up (things like wakarimasuka and kinjuru are written just like that, and we the english reader learn what they mean as blackthorne does, so dont need translations evey time). japanese when heard from a japanese character's perspective is written in normal english, because its still the default, its their first, usually only, language. but it gets funky when youre speaking, say, latin, which they do sometimes. because blackthorne knows it fluently, but its not his first language (though neither is portugese) and its not the one he uses the most. so its written recognizably to us, an english-speaking reader, but in a way that makes it clear it is NOT portugese (default). so its written in this kind of old-englishy very elaborate style, with thees and thous and -ith at the ends of verbs and even just a different grammatical structure than normal english. "who giveth the sign? with importance it should be given quickly." <- not a sentence that comes naturally to english but it is A: recognizable as of the meaning and B: clearly Different. it signals theyre speaking latin even when the whole book is written in English and i think its NEAT
#shogun#im really liking this book dude. its a really interesting style but i dig it#the perspective hops around a bunch but most modern books split it cleaner#this chapter is from A perspective and this chapter is from B perspective OR you get a mix of everyone at once (true omniscent)#but this isnt either of those. it flips between character's minds without clear indication when the flip happens#so u read a chapter that starts from blackthorne's perspective and halfway through it switched to mariko's and you can only tell because#the narration now includes knowledge of what is being said in japanese. and then it switches to toranagas and youre seeing him think about#whatever plan hes concocting and then its back to mariko and she doesnt have all the information you just learned#there was a chapter with all the portugese priests together and it flipped between them so much and they got way into like. backstory shit#and thinking about what happened to get them here what they think should happen next and they didnt all agree#and its not CONFUSING but it is confusing sometimes. u understand#its really interesting tho i like it a lot#and also i actually like blackthorne more in the book than in the show. in the book hes worse#hes more brash and messy and selfish and hes just more of a dickhead and hes more clueless#all things he is in the show but they sanded him down a bit to make him a better love interest/main character#which is TRAGIC. hes so sucks in the book hes more fun and interesting. i like eet

I am enjoying red hood: the hill, but it's kind of driving me crazy how after they did all that shit in Gotham War, they immediately tried to sweep it under the rug with joker: the man who stopped laughing (even tho the issue wasn't really resolved over there), and now giving Jason a series set in the past so it doesn't have to deal with the fallout...DC please...
#ramblings of a lunatic#dc comics#I heard someone say that the next installment of dc vs vampires is seemingly the last thing Matthew Rosenberg has lined up at DC#which is a shame bc after reading his red hood: gotham war tie-in issues i think he has a pretty decent handling on Jason#the complicated and oft times contradictory line he walks between what violence is necessary and what isn't#but his sympathetic elements and charm are still on display#sigh. i need to read task force z don't i#one day I'll read under the red hood in full to get a taste of full on villain!jason#if i stick w/ GA past the phsycial volume i own I'm bound to come across him again and see if ppl are being normal abt the mia thing#idk I think jason as a character has somewhat suffered due to the fact that his character development was very much connected-#-w the n52 reboot#which worked at the time but now that a lot of that continuity is being brought back#it's making ppl realise that we didn't get a true ''jason putting aside differences to try and work w/ the batfamily'' arc or moment#although I do remember him being anti-heroic in the final crisis tie-in?? with kyle and donna right????#i honestly think jason just needs a bit of tlc and introspection and this new storybeat provides a cool outlet for that#(someone talk to me about my red hood idea/pitch pretty pleasseee)#and definitely some cleaning up of his continuity (maybe after some more universe altering events. sigh)#but instead of hopping right on that when they have the opportunity we're getting an (admittedly fun) flashback series#in which jason is more of a co-star than headliner#bwahhh

Adult science fiction standalone novel
In near-future America, struggling documentary filmmaker Hayes Figuerido learns that an alternate version of himself from a parallel universe created the Envisioner, a device that can predict the future, and sent it to his reality
When he joins a team of scientists studying the Envisioner, Hayes meets physicist Yusuf and learns the two of them are married in another universe and finds himself falling for Yusuf in this one
As Hayes learns more about the multiverse, however, it becomes clear that while their lives are inextricably linked, their story often ends in tragedy and saving Yusuf could risk the univerise
Explores multiverse theory and questions of how far you will go to save the one you love
Gay main character with depression; Egyptian, Muslim love interest; M/M romance; aromantic asexual Japanese side character
#ooh i read this one a while ago let me try to remember what i thought#i think the first third or so when they're just studying the envisioner and yusuf and hayes are falling in love is a bit slow#enjoyed the multiverse-hopping stuff#some of the filmmaker stuff like envisioning the world as a script got a little tedious#well fleshed-out protagonist who feels very realistic and flawed#also i liked yusuf#i have seen at least one review by an autistic reader saying they read him as autistic#the aroace representation felt a little questionable to me because the character in question is very cold/calculating?#didn't expect that there would be so much world-building around the near-future america setting which was interesting#like androids being common and also an indigenous sovereign state#also there's one world with a movie crew stuck on the moon that i thought was super interesting#the alternate realities are all cool#okay BIG SPOILERS NOW#i was kind of unconvinced by the ending#basically the main character is given the choice between saving yusuf's life and letting an asteroid destroy earth in another reality#he picks yusuf and it like 'now to compartmentalize my horrific guilt and live happily with him'#and i was like. bro. you are going to be eaten alive by guilt in a few years#i don't know i wasn't convinced by it!!#would love to hear thoughts from someone else who has also read this book tbh#a fractured infinity#nathan tavares#2023 reads#books#lulu reads a fractured infinity#lulu speaks#lulu reads
