Republicans in North Carolina haven't built anything
Editor’s note: Every time I hear some Republican rewriting history to claim credit for making North Carolina an economic powerhouse, I’m writing one of these columns. I’m not giving in to fairy tales or lies. Republicans claiming that they’ve made North Carolina an economic powerhouse reminds me of the saying “Some people were born on third base, but think they hit a triple.” North Carolina was…

countdown to hb2 — two weeks until chapter 1
— darling, won’t you take me home?
“You don’t have to do that.”
“Do what?”
“Fight with them.”
“I’m not fighting with them. They were being assholes and I told them to stop.”
“They’re just looking out for you.”
“Maybe. Still, they don’t get to assume shit like that.”
“They don’t know—”
“I don’t care what they know or don’t know. I’m not gonna stand there and let them say that kind of stuff about you.”
“Harley…”
“Maybe they are looking out for me, maybe they’re concerned, maybe they mean well—I get all of that, okay? But I’m looking out for you. I’m in your corner. And I’m not gonna let people say bad things about you just because they don’t know the full story.”
peter’s first year at ESU was a rollercoaster. he started it alone, depressed, barely holding it together—and he ended it in a better place than he thought was possible.
hopefully his second year will be less hectic.
(parker luck has never been the calm kind.)

Trudy Ring at The Advocate:
A federal court ruled Tuesday that New Hampshire’s classroom censorship law is unconstitutional. The law, House Bill 2, passed in 2021, “actively discouraged public school teachers from teaching and talking about race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and gender identity inside and outside the classroom,” according to the American Civil Liberties Union’s New Hampshire affiliate, which was among the organizations representing the teachers and advocacy groups challenging the statute. It is the first ruling in the nation striking down a classroom censorship law affecting K-12 public schools. HB 2 amended the state’s education and nondiscrimination laws to stipulate that no one could teach that any group of people was superior due to their race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or certain other characteristics, or that any group was inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously. Like other classroom censorship laws passed in states around the nation, it seems to encourage equal treatment of all, but it’s part of a movement to quash any teaching that racism, sexism, homophobia, or other forms of bigotry exist. They are sometimes characterized as "don't say gay" laws. An earlier New Hampshire bill, which did not pass, was based on Donald Trump’s executive order banning the use of federal funds in educational programs to promote so-called divisive concepts relating to race and sex. Joe Biden rescinded that order when he became president, but the primary components of the earlier New Hampshire legislation were wrapped into HB 2.
Teachers and educational advocates argued that the changes made by HB 2 were “unconstitutionally vague,” and U.S. District Court Judge Paul J. Barbadoro agreed. “The Amendments [contained in HB 2] are viewpoint-based restrictions on speech that do not provide either fair warning to educators of what they prohibit or sufficient standards for law enforcement to prevent arbitrary and discriminatory enforcement,” he wrote. “Thus, the Amendments violate the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. For instance, he noted, one teacher avoided certain topics both in the classroom and in his role as an adviser to his high school’s Model United Nations project “out of fear that he might violate the Amendments by commenting on the sort of ‘controversial topics’ that frequently arise at Model UN competitions.” Another teacher said he shied away from discussions of the legacy of slavery when teaching about Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved. “These examples are only illustrative of the wide-ranging difficulties that teachers face in attempting to conform their behavior to the vague strictures of the Amendments,” Barbadoro wrote.
New Hampshire’s anti-LGBTQ+ Don’t Say Gay or Trans law HB2 got rightly struck down by a federal judge.

How do you edit your photos?
With VSCO: the filter HB2 (about +6 of it), exposure way down, add a bit of contrast, add warmth depending on the lighting the pic had, decrease saturation, add clarity
(Hb2 and clarity are behind a paywall but if u just screenshot it and crop it later; free :) loopholes gotta love ’em)
#always scared they’ll notice that ’’screenshotting is a viable option’’ thing and mess around it#bc I will not pay and would have to figure out tf is in hb2#asks#november 2023#2023

hi i need you to know i am positively vibrating over your tags. i generally need to read more yeats and im LOVING this analysis
a very peculiar pair of siblings from a very peculiar isle
(aka there was some kind of funny joke to be made here about the residents of summerisle worshipping nuada. nuala is here too. also yes this is reposted bc i wanted to adjust the contrast)
bonus john myers as sergeant howie bc someone has to get put in the wicker man eventually
#i just LOVE slotting this hellboy fixation into my (admittedly slightly patchy) irish mythology interest#so watching the wicker man often has me turning into the leo dicaprio pointing meme#(though ik theyre in scotland in that)#anyway. the way they wrote the royal family in hb2 is similarly interesting in its construction and how they transposed significant names#onto similar but distinct characters (i.e. the one-armed king is named balor and he's nuada + nuala's father)#was never sure EXACTLY where they pulled nuala from even though i know it's an irish name#maybe just that it's superficially similar to nuada's name. idk#i like thinking about her as a loose analog to fionnuala anyhow since she's kind of Doomed By The Narrative#and that's not even to do with the overarching dunsany reference. which is not capital M Mythological i know but is just cool to me#and partially related to revivalist literature on account of his ties to yeats (i think?)#SORRY for all the tags in response. the intersection of these few things makes my brain start spinning like an old timey airplane propeller#also happy may day/bealtaine!

types of writing utensils they use
implied modern au. featuring: albedo, kazuha, tighnari, xiao.
cw. none wc. 196
albedo
he uses a cheap ballpoint pen. used to use an expensive fountain pen but it had too many issues like leaking while in the pocket of his button-up, or constantly being taken and misplaced by his lab partners timaeus and sucrose.
kazuha
he writes artistic pieces containing flowery language on the daily and as much as i want to say he has the nice writing utensils from like muji or something - his most used tool is a wooden hb2 pencil he found inside a random desk next to a slab of dried chewing gum.
tighnari
he uses a 0.5mm lead pencil. he has a delicate hand grip along with an eye for finer details. he's able to sketch his botanical drawings with keen accuracy using a thinner lead.
xiao
he uses a 0.7mm lead pencil with a rubber grip. holds his pencil in a deadlock so the grip helps alleviates the tension on his fingers. has to be 0.7mm because he presses down onto the paper with such heavy pressure that 0.5mm lead would either immediately break or puncture a hole into the sheet which would ruin his mood for the rest of the day.

we're really fucked, seeing how apathetic the response to various trans bathroom bills has been after everything that went down with HB2 eight whole years ago.
like we remember the absolute national backlash, but for me it was scientific organizations stepping up and saying that they were cancelling events and conferences in north carolina, so their employees wouldn't have to navigate all that, or choose between missing out on critical career opportunities and risk getting harassed and fined for using the bathroom?
and it worked, because money talks
and now there's just. this huge swath of the southern states where it's actively unsafe for trans people to go, and organizations are like, oh well! yeah we're still having our big symposium there :) huh why aren't there more minorities in the sciences 🧐

Hello!! I was wondering if you still do Hellboy character requests? If so, could you maybe do a Prince Nuada head canon with a agent reader?
Prince Nuada X Agent Reader Headcanons
A/N: Might turn this into a fic tbh. seems like more of a summary of a story then HCs haha. Hopefully these are enough for ya'll to enjoy
Pairing(s): Prince Nuada X Agent!Reader
Characters: Prince Nuada, Reader, Hellboy, Nuala
⚠️ Warnings!: minor bits of non-descript violence, not canon compliant, kidnapping
______________________________________________________________
✨Being on the opposing side of the main conflict in HB2, it took a long time for Nuada to even consider you an ally, let alone later, a lover.
✨He first met you at the Troll Market, when you stumbled upon him. You were investigating a lead which ended up with the two of you fighting in one of the less populated parts of the market. Down a side-street.
✨He was impressed with your ability to wield a crossbow, along with quick-thinking hand-to-hand combat. Having been trained in several different martial art styles, you were able to hold you own. However, you had a hard time keeping up with Nuada's inhuman agility. In the end you were spared by taking your fight to a slightly more populated area and disappearing into a crowd due to him hesitating to kill you.
✨This is where the seed was planted for him to take notice of you. His feelings are still largely negative, with your next confrontation being at the library when Nuada comes for his sisters half of the crown.
✨He and Hellboy fight, but you end up cutting in after Hellboy is injured and end up having another fight with Nuada yourself. Instead of killing you, he ends up almost fatally injuring you. You end up spending the final confrontation in critical condition recovering in a medical wing of the BRPD
✨The crown is destroyed and Nuada + Nuala both survive the events of HB2. Nuada is taken in as a prisoner of war by the BRPD.
✨While Nuala picks up the pieces of her shattered people, creating a treaty with humanity to find above-ground land her people can live on, Nuada is planning his escape.
✨You've been assigned to helping with relations between Nuala and members of BRPD who are seeking to create beneficial relations between their bureau and the Bethmoran people
✨You end up confronting him while in captivity about him nearly killing you, and expressing that if he ever escaped you would hunt him down.
✨Seeing your scars visible from how he injured you, while he's still filled with hatred, there is a tinge of regret for hurting you.
✨His sister wants to give Nuada a second chance to do something for his people by contributing valuable information from his travels in order to determine what land would be beneficial to move the new Bethmora to.
✨He see's her attempts at relations with humanity as a futile attempt and continues to refuse to help. However, when you threaten to leave him to rot as you are one of the only people who he will get to see, Nuada says he will offer some help if you come back the next day.
✨Thus begins the tentative relationship between the two of you, as he offers a little info each visit, his spite lessening slowly.
✨As you begin to create some weird comfortable rhythm to your visits, Nuada starts to open up a little about his past and debate you on your people (humanity).
✨Though you do argue, and have many differing opinions on the topics, Nuada is feeling conflicted about what are starting to become feelings of familiarity and affection towards you.
✨He hates himself for starting to have feelings towards an Agent in the BRPD let alone a human. However, this won't stop him in his pursuit to escape his prison and get revenge.
✨Eventually he will have all he needs in order to finally break out of the BRPD. While doing so, he ends up confronting you again.
✨Your fight goes a little better with you nearly defeating Nuada. However, he does get the upper hand and manages to disarm you. However, instead of killing you, he takes you hostage as a bargaining chip to use against the BRPD
✨During this kidnapping you end up having even more heated arguments about how what he's doing is wrong, and his feelings towards you gives him even more inner conflict about what he is doing.
✨He takes you to one of his hideouts in the tunnels of the subway system beneath the city. There you end up noticing for the first time his reluctance to hurt you badly, unlike before.
✨You confront him about this and he admits on some level that he has started to like you, and it is something he wants to quash.
✨This realization starts to make you think more about your own conflicted feelings, and how there might be something there within you which could be affection.
✨In the end, although you are on differing sides of a conflict, tension builds to a breaking point and you end up sharing a kiss.
✨This creates even more conflicting emotions within you both. Nuada tries to distance himself, and you try to figure out what you are going to do.
✨Finally you make the decision that whatever this is between you, it isn't as important as what Nuala is doing for her people. You can't let Nuada use you or whatever he's planning to destroy the relations between humanity and the Bethmoran people.
✨Planning your own escape, you find the right opportunity to get away, taking advantage of Nuada's affection for you and your training as an agent to disappear.
______________________________________________________________
These are a lot of HCs so I'm gonna leave it there. I think any more and this would be the plot to a novel lmao

In spite of Republicans, not because of them
When the legislature opened a couple of weeks ago, Senate President Pro-tem Phil Berger delivered a speech touting the success of Republicans over the past 12 of power. He took credit for the economic growth in North Carolina and bragged that the GOP had changed the state. “Over the last 12 years and following the simple formula of lower taxes, less regulation, and a commitment to quality…

Christopher Wiggins at The Advocate:
North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the Republican politician who recently won the GOP primary for governor, has a history of making bigoted remarks about LGBTQ+ people, including a series of unreported Facebook posts reviewed by The Advocate. These posts reveal Robinson’s years-long pattern of using homophobic slurs and promoting fearmongering claims against the LGBTQ+ community, describing it as “perverted,” “unnatural,” “sinful,” and “demonic.” Robinson repeatedly used the euphemism “British cigarette” — a term seemingly employed to circumvent Facebook’s community guidelines — to refer to a highly offensive homophobic slur. Robinson used the term at least three times. In 2017, he mocked Facebook’s standards by writing, “So apparently, using the British word for cigarettes violates Facebook’s ‘community standards.’ LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!”
The next year, he questioned whether domestic violence incidents involving transgender individuals should be categorized as violence against women, asking, “Will the feminists raise hell over it? I’m asking for a British cigarette,” and again in 2018, apparently during the Winter Olympics, commenting, “I can’t watch these Olympics. There are entirely too many British cigarettes smoking up the screen.” [...] In a particularly troubling post in 2018, Robinson posted a photo of himself with a handwritten sign that said, “GO OUTSIDE WITH THE DOG!!!” in response to a nonbinary person asking where to use the bathroom. Recently, Robinson said that trans women should be “arrested” for using the bathroom of their choice and outrageously suggested they “find a corner outside somewhere” instead. He reiterated these views in May, claiming Republicans “were right about HB2,” the 2016 anti-trans bathroom bill that cost North Carolina over $3.7 billion.
North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R), who is running for Governor, has a long trail of expressing homophobic and transphobic views on Facebook that predate his tenure as the state’s No. 2.
North Carolinians cannot afford to elect this anti-LGBTQ+ extremist to lead the state. Vote Josh Stein (D)!
