22/05/2019 Liban : gros plan sur nos hôtes d'Hazmieh (Beyrouth)

Le 2 mai, arrivée à l'aéroport de Beyrouth et marche jusqu'à Hazmieh, les quartiers évoluent d'atmosphère... sur les visages, on lit :"Que font ces deux grands dadais blonds à pied ?". Les Filles de la charité nous attendaient joyeusement. Ces religieuses tiennent un hôpital et nous ont accueilli avant et après notre "pèlerinage libanais", depuis Batroun (Nord) à Tyr (Sud). Au Liban, la consigne est de ne pas dire notre destination finale (le pays est en guerre contre Israël).

Photo 3 : les deux garçons, Maximilien et Paul sont en mission pour l'Oeuvre d'Orient. À mi-temps comme aide-soignants, à mi-temps dans le projet génial d'une rencontre de jeunes de différents pays d'Orient (à plein temps blagueurs). Cette rencontre mettra en lien des jeunes acteurs de paix pour qu'ils s'encouragent, par exemple en Syrie, deux frères menuisiers qui refont de leurs mains le mobilier de leur village détruit : lits, tables d'école, ... Photo 4 : Sœur Nicole est responsable des cuisines depuis 50 ans (on a jamais aussi bien mangé dans un hôpital). Pendant la guerre civile (1975-1989), elle a notamment protégé des soldats blessés en les déguisant en personnel de salle d'opération.

Best Galettes des Rois in Lebanon

The holiday season is coming to an end. After an unusual year, we all knew we deserved some indulgence at the end of it, so we stopped counting calories to savor all the festive dishes and desserts: the turkey, the stollen bread, the yule log (bûche de Noël), the knefe breakfast and the list goes on.

But before we close the season, one last celebration is Epiphany with its famous “Galette des Rois” (Kings cake).

The kings cake may be a continuation of tradition of the Roman Saturnalia when a king for the day was chosen by baking an actual bean into pastry.

Nowadays, the bakeries start preparing the Kings cake starting January and different versions are available. The most traditional ones remain the frangipane in puff pastry and the brioche with candied fruits. A figurine is hidden inside the cake, and the person who gets it will be the happy king / queen.

What does Zahlé have that the rest of Lebanon doesn’t? Electricity, and the Tannouri Brothers: Clément and Marc, or as they like to be called “Chasseurs de Saveurs” (Chasers of taste).

The famous bread and pastries chefs present this year a classic Frangipane for 10 people made with the Isigny St Mère butter.

Availability: Delivery and pickup in the bakery in Zahlé. Delivery to Beirut on Wednesday and Saturday and orders should be placed 3 days ahead.

Hallab

The palace of Lebanese sweets since 1881 has in addition to the classic “Galette des Rois”, an oriental one, the “Baklawa des Rois” made upon order and filled with ashta. Both are available in a size serving up to 10 people.
