I don't know if I handled this correctly so I'm turning to here to help me decide. I received this comment on one of my fic today.
Tumblr media
And I responded to it with this.
Tumblr media
I just want to know if I took it too far because I didn't really put many tags on the fic, only these
Tumblr media
So maybe it was my fault?

not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…
‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.
‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.
even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.
I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.
fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.
idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.

So today I got a rather unkind comment on AO3 (one could call it hate), but I believe it to be a bot for several reasons:
Guest account, but username attached
Said username exists but person is unlikely to be reading Tolkien fic (according to their Tumblr and AO3, they are in other fandoms)
Two grammatically correct sentences
Super generic text that could apply to any fic:
"I've seen better fanfiction written by a toddler. Get it together!"
I'm curious, did anyone else get comments like this? Let me know.
And to those who have gotten rude comments and are now worried/upset: Maybe it was just a bot too. Either way: You're awesome for putting your writing out there for others to enjoy and you don't deserve to get rude comments for it. If you want feel free to message me to compare cases and discuss details :)

the duality of comments i get gives me whiplash sometimes. cause i'll get a really nice very sweet comment from people, then i'll get needless feedback that is like. if i wanted you to critique my work i would have asked for that. and then i'll get a comment like "you should kill yourself" and i'm just like. if i wasnt an adult and/or wasn't in a good headspace can you imagine the repercussions that would have. if i had gotten these types of comments when i was a teenager i don't think i would be writing right now. people get real brave when they think things are anonymous. anyways you don't know what people are going through and maybe, just maybe, think before you make a mean comment or critique without permission. if you're leaving any other kind of comment then you're already doing 10x better than that and making someone's day

Jason opened his front door, greeted by a woman with brown hair, streaked with white. She waved nervously, a foil-wrapped plate in her other hand.
Jason: Um, hi, you need help with something?
Mia: Hi! You don't know me, I'm Mia. I've lived here for a few years, but I almost didn't. I won't bother you for long, but seven years ago I was really sick, on dialysis and everything. I… thought I was going to die – no kidneys for me. Then, a child's kidneys were a match.
As Mia spoke, Jason's eyes widened for a moment, realizing where this was going, but he remained silent.
Mia: I got better, and I wanted to find your grave to… um… thank you. I'm a bit of a sleuth, and I found out you were alive, which is odd, but hey, this is Gotham.
Mia laughed somberly, a mixture of accepting the city's craziness and the surreal nature of this moment. She held out the plate, a smile on her face.
Mia: Thanks for the kidney. You saved my life, and you deserve a present for doing so.
Jason took the plate without a word, unwrapping the foil to reveal brownies topped with M&Ms. Mia's smile remained unwavering as she stayed at the door.
Mia: Brownies are the best gift. When I got clearance at the hospital, my mom brought in a Tupperware full of them. I'm going back to my hidey-hole, but…
Jason pulled Mia into a tight hug, surprising her for a few seconds.
Jason: You're… welcome. Stupid allergies are making me sniffle, by the way.
Mia (hugging him back): I'm going through the same thing.

ATTENTION EVENT RUNNERS
Do you run a fic writing event? Do your participants like comments? Well I have something for you!
The No More Zero Comments Project is a community effort to reduce the number of fics on ao3 with no comments at all. You can read more about it in our pinned post, but we have a spreadsheet of fics with no comments here, and you can submit your own fics to be added to it here. We've gotten 150+ comments so far using this spreadsheet, so it definitely works!
I find that fics for fandom and prompt events tend to get less comments (from personal experience), so if you run an event, please reblog this post (or our pinned post) so your participants can see it and hopefully get involved. Thank you!!!

i will never understand ppl who hate or disrespect fanfiction authors like.. ‘uh oh the thing you wrote doesn’t match my perception of these characters/story so im gonna make it your problem’ are you being serious… these authors write things for free, for their own enjoyment and are vulnerable enough to share it with others in hopes to bring them joy too and your gonna be a hater? get out rn. not every fic is everyone’s cup of tea and thats fair enough, but if you read something you don’t like you can just exit the tab? just be a decent person pls especially when you are actively seeking fanfic out yourself? anyway sorry, I get really fired up about this bc fanfiction authors are literally a god tier breed of human, fanfic authors are the backbone of society and I love every single one of them and I admire y’all dedication genuinely you make life so good.

PJO ≠ Greek Mythology
I can't believe I have to say this but I swear by the gods, the next time I see a pjo fan saying "the gods can be easily overthrow. This is canon on riondanverse and in greek mythology" or "yes. Mortals, specially demigods can win a fight against the olympians and easily defeat them. It happend on greek mythology. So it is plausible for Percy overthrow Zeus." I'm gonna riot.
You want a story where Percy takes down Olympus? Ok! There may be fics on ao3. You want a fic where Zeus is taken out of his crown and someone else takes his place? Fine. There may be fics on ao3 with this premise. I may hate this take, and I won't read it. But if you like, go ahead.
The riondanverse barely scratches the greek mythology correctly. The Gods are marely réplicas of the tales of Old. They dont match with their myths - since Riordan basically blanded one myth on the other, or created a few himself. - The PJO Gods are not a source for greek mythology, they dont properly represent their importance, much less their complexity, nuance and power.
So stop. Just stop spreading misinformation about Mythology - which u know nothing about if you are saying those things - or using it as a basis to your takes.
The Gods, the Olympian Counsil cannot be "easily" overthrow in any possible way. Using the idea "Zeus did that with Khronos so it is easy" is literally absurd. Zeus is a God. He has always been a God. He was born a God.
Only a God can fight another one and win. And a mortal - including demigods - can only harm a God with divine help - which usually is Athena's helping them. - No God can overthrow Zeus powerwise, let alone a mere mortal (Im looking at you, Epic fans). He is the King of Gods for a reason. That is a fact in greek mythology.
But if you want a good idea of "dethrone Zeus" trope acordding to Hesiod, there was a prophecy one of Zeus children would be the one to do it. When Zeus learned about it, he pushed a Khronos and devoured one his pregnant wives, Métis. Athena was still born from his head though.
Do you know what he did to Athena? Nothing. She is his favorite kid. He kept doing it? Also no. He never did that again. And all his god children were welcome in Olympus. Even Dionysus - who was born a mortal and ascended. Even Heracles, who became a minor god.
+ the "overthrown" of Zeus wouldnt happen. Zeus is - according to greek mythology - the fairest of the kings. I dont care if you don't like Zeus because for your modernized view on ancient tales "he is evil". He is a good king and that is a fact in Greek Mythology. You like it or not. He is not a tyrant. And he is not considered a Tyrant in mythology either. Another reason for one of his wives be Themis - Justice.
By the end of the day, getting out of Myth and going into their philosophy and theology.
The Gods are literally a representantion of the Cosmos and natural law. They are not "beings with too much power". Hades is the underworld. Poseidon is the nature. Zeus is the heavens. More than that, Zeus is the one who brought harmony to the universe - the oikos. Without him, everything we know about crumbles.
And Zeus children are the parts of human society. The pillars of "civilization". Apollo is art and healing. Hermes is communications and commerce. Athena is strategy and warfare. Hephaestus is technology. Ares is conflict/war and bloodthirsty. And there you go.
All the Gods represent the "good" and "bad" aspects of their domains. + They also reflect the human nature. That is why they are "flawed". That is why they are way more complex in the myths. Why they make good and bad decisions. Why they sometimes are kinder, why sometimes they are crueler.
Overthrow the Olympians mythwise? Would be the end of the life as we know of. The end of civilization. If there would be human life by the end of it.
Stop saying shit u don't know about only to support your takes on a greek-american fanfiction written by an American man.

I got my first hate!! IM A REAL AUTHOR NOW
Tumblr media
But like, no joke, please don’t leave hate. Obviously there are going to be points where it’s ORV, but this is also fanfiction, posted as fanfiction, and advertised as fanfiction. I’ve never claimed I wrote this.
Also I find it super funny that the commenter has multiple works for boy bands because I personally think that shipping irl people is really weird 😭😭

I swear, if the spammers start showing up on AO3, I'm giving up. This is not a diss on AO3 because they do an AMAZING job of keeping that place spam-free, I have just been getting so much more on fanfiction.net lately, and if it's spreading to AO3 and we have to deal with it until the team can find a workaround, I am going to curl up in the fetal position and cry. I'm really hoping this is a one-off and won't happen again.
@ao3org, if there's anything at all we can do as authors on the platform to help you outside of just reporting this when we see it, please let me know. I will do it.

Chapter 3: Once in a while in everyone's life, there may come someone that will put them in a difficult position, discourage, and make him or her angry without a shadow of regret. But you should not despair, for in the end, through the prism of mutual misunderstanding and enmity, you will find a common enemy - hunger and powerlessness.
