Morning cigarette
It dawns and the city has its day off. A funnel is smoking in our neighborhood and I need you like a morning cigarette, like a bitter coffee.
The streets are empty, there isn’t a single soul outside. The moon just disappeared in the West and I am looking for you like a fateful solution and like the sunrise.
The sun is up, the radio is too loud, playing a hasapiko song grieving some man named Tasos and I raise on you and then fold my cards in a blind bet.
That’s my favourite song of Notis Mavroudis, the composer, who just passed away. RIP

Greek Wedding Entertainment: Tradition, Music, and Celebration
Greek weddings are known for their rich cultural heritage, steeped in centuries-old traditions that create a unique and lively celebration. Greek wedding entertainment is a blend of music, dance, and ceremonial customs, each reflecting the vibrant culture of Greece. These elements come together to create a joyous atmosphere, making the wedding a memorable experience for both the couple and their guests.
Traditional Greek Wedding Customs
Greek weddings are filled with symbolic rituals that highlight the union of the couple and the joy of the occasion. One of the most significant customs is the crowning ceremony. In this part of the ceremony, the couple is crowned with floral or metallic crowns, known as stefana, which are joined by a ribbon to symbolize the bond between the bride and groom. This ancient tradition represents the unity and shared responsibilities in their new life together.
Following the ceremony, it's customary to shower the newlyweds with rice or sugar-coated almonds. These items symbolize fertility, prosperity, and a sweet life ahead. Greek weddings are also famous for the breaking of plates, a practice that symbolizes good fortune and the letting go of past sorrows. Though it’s more common at receptions than ceremonies, the smashing of plates is a highly anticipated part of the entertainment.
Music: The Heartbeat of Greek Weddings
Music plays a pivotal role in Greek wedding entertainment. The sound of live instruments like the bouzouki (a stringed instrument) fills the venue, creating an atmosphere full of energy and excitement. Traditional Greek music is a mix of uplifting rhythms and melodic tunes, deeply tied to the country's history and cultural pride.
In addition to the live band or musicians, Greek weddings often feature singers who belt out well-known traditional wedding songs. These songs often tell tales of love, happiness, and the joys of marriage. The guests are encouraged to join in the singing, making the reception a community-centered event. Whether it’s a solo performance or group harmonizing, the music brings everyone together in celebration of the couple’s union.
Dancing: The Spirit of Celebration
No Greek wedding is complete without dancing. Greek dances are an essential part of the entertainment and can last for hours as guests celebrate through movement. One of the most famous dances is the Sirtaki, often mistakenly referred to as the “Zorba dance.” This dance starts slowly and gradually picks up speed, encouraging both the couple and guests to join in. The Sirtaki brings the entire wedding party together in a circle, creating a sense of unity and shared happiness.
Another popular dance is the Kalamatianos, which is a traditional Greek circle dance. This dance, known for its fast tempo, is performed by guests holding hands as they move in a counterclockwise direction. It is both joyous and energetic, bringing a festive spirit to the event.
For the newlyweds, the Zeibekiko is a dance that holds special significance. Though traditionally a solo male dance, it has become a dance that the groom often performs to showcase his happiness and devotion. The Hasapiko, a slower and more dramatic dance, is also frequently seen at Greek band Sydney and is performed with intense passion.
Interactive Entertainment: A Family Affair
Greek weddings emphasize family and community, so the entertainment often includes interactive elements where guests participate. In addition to dancing and singing, guests may engage in traditional games or perform skits, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the event. Friends and family members are encouraged to share personal stories, blessings, and toasts, all contributing to the close-knit feel of a Greek wedding.

Hundreds of residents and tourists gathered in Mykonos‘ old port to dance the traditional ”hasapiko” dance on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Orthodox Christian calendar, this Sunday was Palm Sunday, and a big group of professional and amateur dancers wearing traditional Greek island clothes gathered to perform, for the sixth time this year, the traditional and famous ”hasapiko” dance.
The Mykonean hasapiko is a much more difficult variation of the widely popular Greek dance, as it incorporates more difficult dance moves.
Listening to popular and traditional Greek songs, tens of dancers danced along the seafront of the old port of the island and stunned the residents and tourists who were there to enjoy the spectacle.

Sirtaki, birlikteliğin dansıdır. Toprağa doğru dans edilir. Yunan dansı olarak ün salmış bu dansın çıkış noktası İstanbul. Dansın adı o zamanlar Sirtaki değil, Hasapiko. Rumca kasap demek. #sirtaki #hasapiko #ataş #ataç #çizim #eskiz #karalama #illüstrasyon #resim #sanat #draw #drawing #sketch #sketching #sketchaday #art #instagram #creative #inspiration #yunanistan #greek #dance #tbt #dans #love #like #kurumsalkacak (Beşiktaş, İstanbul)

5, 46, 60 for Eva! 🇬🇷 🇨🇺 Cannot promise it will be the last though! 😂
LOL I'm cracking up at those who DM'd me like "OMG I hope I didn't ask too many!" Then they saw others ask more and they're like "EFF that, here are more!" 😂 😂 😂
OK let's do this for my upcoming OC - Eva Mendoza. (Who may be an MC... I have to decide....) 5. What’s their most useless, weirdest, or least marketable skill?
She can do a mean hasapiko and she can salsa better than most. Useless? Not totally, she's a huge hit at weddings on both sides of the family. But certainly not marketable. lol
46. Are they the life of the party or a wallflower?
This is a tricky question. She is more reserved, definitely more reserved than Casey, but she's not exactly a wallflower. She enjoys dancing and having fun, but she's equally content to sit on the sides and watch others enjoy their time as well. She tends to be more lively when she is around people she is truly comfortable with (and if a little too much alcohol is involved... or her brother!)
60. What are some of their simple pleasures?
Her mother always reserved a couple hours a week as her "beauty and relaxation time". She'd take a bubble bath, maybe a homemade facial mask, some aromatherapy, do her nails... totally self-pampering. When Eva (and her sister) were teens, she encouraged them to do the same. At first, Eva found it silly, but when she was in Med School and life became so stressful and hectic, she started incorporating this into her life as well. It was so helpful, she never stopped.
In addition to this, she loves reading, cooking, taking long walks, baklava, hugs (but she's selective AF), cupcakes, petting dogs and cats, and... though she'll never admit it... seeing her family (once she's away from home, they're easier to tolerate in small doses. lol)
Thank you for the questions my friend! :)

In a country where folk dances are as alive today as they were in ancient times, Greece counts over 4,000 traditional dances spread across all regions of the country. Some dances are also known outside the Greek borders and were brought to many corners of the world thanks to the vast Greek diaspora. With the social function of bringing the community together, traditional dances are usually performed at weddings, baptisms, births or name days, or festivals and holidays such as Easter. Here are seven traditional Greek dances you should know.

Note
All the men from BATIM react to either dancing the hasapiko (χασάπικο), to at least learning about the lingam massage, or both.
I’m pretty damn sure they know how to dance to this or at least some of them
I sometimes forget that dancing is a thing that people do who aren’t like professional asndajhajkd
