Eileen Pride Prince was born on January 24, 1983, the only daughter of Severus Snape and a witch whose name is not mentioned. She carries the first and middle name of her father's mother, thus avoiding direct association with him while paying homage to their family history.

Her second name, "Pride," was given to her by Minerva, who, along with Dumbledore and Severus, is the only one aware of her origins.

During her childhood, and up until the war broke out in 1997, her father's true identity was kept secret to protect his role as a spy and Death Eater in service to Dumbledore. Eileen then grew up at Hogwarts, tossed between the forbidden ingredient reserves where she spent hours learning while her father took inventory, late-night potions lessons improvised in their living room, and the dark corridors where Mrs. Norris was sometimes her only company.

She excels in many subjects but stands out especially in potions, which she had mastered even before learning to read properly. Her entire childhood was filled with the scents of cauldrons, the vapors of macerating plants, and the bottling of potions that her father prepared, which she took care to label to help him.

A member of the Slytherin house, Eileen is known for being very intelligent, confident, and extremely cunning. Despite her cold nature, expressionless face, and imperturbable demeanor, she suffers from anxiety that often prevents her from sleeping, condemning her to wander the castle corridors in search of rest.

She has an unconditional love for her father, who raised and protected her despite the circumstances in which she was born and who continues to prioritize her whenever he can. Their relationship is unusual in that they rarely see each other during the day, contenting themselves with a teacher/student relationship when necessary. In the evenings, however, she takes advantage of the opportunity to slip into his office while Severus corrects his students' work, speaking rarely during these moments when she prefers to simply listen to him complain about his mediocre students.

As she grew older, her striking resemblance to Severus often made her the target of ridicule by other students. The rise of a Dark Wizard brought with it conflict, war and despair. But throughout the Wizarding War the sanctuary that was Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry remained. Secured and safe from the darkness and death that continued to consume the Wizarding populous.

In October of 1981 the Order of the Phoenix fell and disbanded, the death of infant Harry Potter seemingly causing the demise of Voldemort. With it came the retreat of the Death Eaters that had tormented Wizarding-kind for the last decade. With many lives lost, the Minister of Magic was forced to resign, protests and disruption continued until a new Minister was appointed.

Fear still hangs heavily over magic-kind, but with the founding of Hogwarts University comes hope. A new beginning, with many former Hogwarts students previously burdened by the war returning to continue their education at a place many consider home.

I thought I'd chuck on a few of my own suggestions or recommendations up here, though these are mostly based in the experience of being an admin of a site and having my members tell me how they found us, rather than being a writer that's gone out to find them on my own. (I've been a one-site writer for a while now, since that's all I have the time and energy for nowadays.)

Hopefully this is helpful - not only to newbies entering the RP sphere for the first time, but also for returning writers who've been out of the game for a little while and might need pointers as to where to start their search in a different era of RP, or even other admins who may not have realized that there are other avenues beyond the "normalized" ones for where writers can find you!

Suggestions/recommendations are under the cut, since this ended up being much longer than I originally planned on.

First, advertising and affiliate sections:

I cannot stress to you how important these are. A lot of admins - myself included - may not like going through the rigmarole of advertising or linking back, or might feel like it's a tedious and obsolete method of networking, but I promise you people actually do look through these. I've had a lot of members that found and joined my site because they happened across another one that was in the same genre but wasn't really their cup of tea, and found us in their "First Links" or "Link Back" sub-forums. Even I will go through these: I'll be doing the ads and link backs that I need to, and when I'm finished, I'll impulsively go click through everyone in their affiliate's section just to take a jog around the RP sphere and see how everyone is doing. (Almost the virtual equivalent of taking my dog for a walk through the neighborhood and waving to everyone as I pass by; I might not stop for coffee, but I'm still happy to see if you're doing well, or sorry to see that some of my long-time neighbors might have moved out.) From what I've seen, it's grown a bit more popular to exclude having an advertising section on your forum, or to limit who can advertise with you - probably due to the growing popularity of private or semi-private sites - and I totally get why, re: the aforementioned tediousness of having to advertise, and that they can be a bit time-consuming to keep up with, etc. However, while I fully empathize with this from the perspective of someone who's worst enemy is the monotony of having to do advertising, it's worth it to have those forums and to get that foot traffic, if you have a public or public-facing site. If I were a person looking for somewhere to write, the first thing I would do is go to my old haunts and click through all of those advertisements and affiliates to see if there's something that strikes my fancy.

Reddit and subreddits are HUGE for us:

I'm also going to say "wait wait wait, don't click away-!" here because OP was spitting some facts when they included Reddit on their list. (Listen, I get it. Reddit hasn't always been great, and I'm sure a lot of us avoided it years and years ago, because the only times you hear about it on other platforms is when people are acting like damn fools, but OP right: it's better now, and it's much easier to curate a feed specifically to your interests, and there's some gold in them there hills waiting to be dug up!) That being said, I'm not personally big on Reddit myself, and my site doesn't typically advertise on Reddit to begin with. However, I have a surprisingly large amount of members who have used Reddit as a vehicle to eventually end up on my site. Some of them had been out of the game for a while (like 10+ years in some people's cases) and didn't know where to start when they wanted to come back. Those people went to r-slash-[fandom name] for whatever genre they were looking for (r/PJO or r/HarryPotter, for some examples off the top of my head) and looked around at the posts there. Even if they didn't find any advertisements or recommendations for sites, they were pointed to places and subreddits where they could. Some times they found us directly, and sometimes they were pointed to other sites that they found us through. At any rate, they found a link to us - either through being linked directly by recommendations, or by being recommended another site that we'd advertised with and/or were affiliated with, and in turn ended up on our site. And even if you can't find an actual site or forum using Reddit that suits what you're looking for, it's also a good place to start finding other people that can help you in your search. Word of mouth helps sites get around too, and if you're a new writer on your own searching for an RP site for the first time, it makes it that much harder. Reddit is a platform where you can find other people with the same interests as you, who may also be interested in writing, and they can help you out too! (Also, it's worth noting that one of the subreddits dedicated to roleplay/rp stories has a Google doc curated from suggestions that lists "RP hubs, forums, and subreddits." Many other subreddit communities, even if not directly related to helping organize communities or advertise, might have something similar!)

Facebook writing groups, of all places.

This one was really surprising for me to hear, personally, as I didn't think there was a space for this on Facebook. I'm very happy to be proved wrong! Facebook has a space for creating and hosting groups; some of you might be familiar with the more memey or shitposty aspect of these groups, but they exist for just about anything. (Hell, my mom, who doesn't actually have her own Facebook account, has one just for gardening.) Naturally, there are ones for writing too! Altogether, I've had upwards of 10+ people over the course of my site's 3 - going on 4 - year run tell me that they found my site or were able to get back into RP through resources that they found on Facebook. That might not sound like a lot of people in the scheme of things, but when you also take into consideration that my site is apart of a more niche genre, and therefore as a result is always on the smaller end of RP sites, that's actually a very significant portion of my member base!

OP's list is a very good one, and already includes most of the ones that I might make. (Or at least, a lot of the popular ones that I'm sure us established or long-time RPers might already know about.)

Here are also some suggestions, ideas, etc. off the top of my head that I didn't see included:

Amino: Amino is a platform that specifically gears itself towards helping users join communities and to curate a "feed" for your interests - and yes, that includes RP! My old roommate used to use this quite often, and it very much has an almost Chatango/Omegle vibe where you can also conduct RP over chat without leaving the site itself or needing a third-party method, like Discord.

RP Repository: Not a site that I've personally used, but I've heard of in passing for a long time, still seems to be active, and seems like a good place to find 1x1 partners for specific plots or settings?

Top RP Sites/Topsites: Topsites are almost like a "voting" directory, where forums and RPs can advertise on the topsites. In turn, they're given a button to place on their site that members can click through to "vote" for them - the more votes a site has, the more "endorsed" it's considered to be. There are sections for sponsored forums, forums that have won awards, and newly registered forums, as well as options to sort by ranks, views, different category types, etc.

Mudlet/MUDs: Again, not something I've ever used (I've always been a strictly forum-based RP writer, on Jcink for over 10 years, and ProBoards before that) but Mudlet/MUD games came highly recommended to me by one of my members. Mudlet is a platform for gaming in a "multi-user dungeon" (hence: MUD) that is a multiplayer, real-time, virtual world that is usually entirely text-based. If forums or Tumblr aren't your schtick, maybe look into these?

Lastly: Google. (Or any other site, really.) Do not underestimate the power of a good, old-fashioned "[fandom + genre + platform of choice] + rp" in your favorite search engine and see what it comes up with. Even just doing this now while I write this reply, I can see a lot of results for either booming, active sites at the top of the list, or they provide me with links to directories where those types of sites are being advertised.

Roleplay Is Not Dead Nor Doth It Sleep

There's a post going around about how text-based, freeform roleplay is dead, and I was typing up a huge response to this, with an accompanying guide on how to find roleplayer in 2024, when I realized it might have a bigger reach if I made it its own post. So here's that guide.

I hesitate to say that there isn't a problem with the new format of social media making roleplay more difficult to find, but in the desire to make that point, the OP of the original post has left people with the idea that there's no way for them to get into freeform text roleplay in 2024. Which just isn't true! Here, look at all the ways.

Forums

The link to RPG-Directory to find roleplaying forums is a good start. Once you've found a forum RPG, even if you don't join, there's usually an 'advertising' section on that forum where other forum RPGs post their ads - this may help you to find forums that don't advertise on RPG-D.

Another really good forum to find roleplay on is Barbermonger. Barbermonger is focused on connecting people for one-on-one roleplays.

This last one's going to be weird, but it turns out that there are still people seeking roleplay on the Gaia Online forums after all these years. I think this is delightfully retro and then crowd there seems a little older than average. No pre-existing knowledge of Gaia required.

Tumblr

You can also find forum roleplay groups (as well as tumblr and Discord groups) right here on Tumblr. Usually, the thing to do is to use the search function - search for "[genre] rp" or "[fandom] rp" and sort by "latest." (If you sort by Top, you are likely to find dead RPs.) For example, here's fantasy rp, historical rp, and marvel rp. You can also try jcink rp, as most roleplay forums are hosted on Jcink these days, or discord rp, depending on your favored platform.

It's a little heavier on smut-only roleplays than other platforms mentioned here, but it's not impossible to find sexless, plot-based roleplay here either. It's a little janky, but what it needs more than anything is a bigger user base. Their Discord server is also a good place to find one on one discord roleplay. you sat on the couch, reading your favorite book. the radio was playing quietly in the background. james and lily were at an order meeting. while you stayed behind to watch harry. it had taken days to convince james and lily that it was okay if they left for a few hours to go to a meeting. they were scared to leave you all alone in the big house, even when dumbledore sweared that it was safe there. so after days and days of endless talks about your and harrys safety, they finally agreed to go. but not without having a long and painful talk, what to do if danger ensured. 

they were gone for about half an hour now, and you just had put harry down for a nap, when you heard it. it wasn’t a normal sound. not the creaking of the door, everytime james would go down into the basement, not the sound of someone going up the stairs. it was a sound from the street. a magical sound. 

even when you and james were kids you had this deep gut feeling, that would tell you when something bad was about to happen. call it a magical sixth sense but it had saved james from breaking his arm more than once. 

you reacted immediately. you raced up the stairs, down the corridor to harrys room. you grabbed him out of his crib and panicked

no no no

what now, what now? 

tears streamed down your face. you held harry with your right arm and tried to sooth his crying. with your left arm you grabbed the little bag of floo powder from your back pocket. you breathed in deeply. then you tiptoed to the door, opening it just a crack.

the first thing you heard were the voices 

“where are they?” 

the voice was cold and made you shiver immediately. you had never heard him speak, but as soon as hs voice had reached your ears, you had known. known that it was him. voldemort in person.

you walked down the corridor as quietly as you could. trying to reach james and lilys room in time, before they would notice that you were here. there was your escape. the chimney.

you stood before the door, but suddenly there was another voice, which answered the dark lords question. this voice was familiar, too familiar. peter! you made a noise of shock, which, to your misfortune, wasn’t as quiet as you thought.

oh no 

the voices downstairs had stopped talking and you could hear footsteps nearing the stairs. as quickly as you could, you opened the door, to your brothers and sister-in-laws bedroom and hexed it shut. this wouldn't keep them out for long, but it would buy you enough time to escape. you layed down harry in the fireplace and opened the bag of flew powder, but winced as loud steps neared the door and you could hear someone knock

“this is the first and only time i’m asking nicely to be let in” his voice sounded scary. you felt like a child as your hands shook and you tried to keep focused on your task at hand. 

but at the second loud knock, you were starled so much, that you accidentely let go of the bag, wind flew in trough the opened window and spread the powder all over the floor. 

oh no

you rushed to the fireplace and tried to hide harry behind the fire wood as best as you could, you hexed a muffliato, so his crying wouldn’t be heard. then you stepped a few feet away and tried to gather the powder in your hands, which seemed to be an unsolvable task at the moment.

then you heard the door click. all strength left your hand and the collected powder fell to the floor. 

the door sprang wide open as a figure dressed in all black entered the room. he was nothing short of what you had imagined him to look like. his eyes were read and looked more dangerous than a wand could ever. you rose to your feet. if you were about to battle voldemort you would stand your ground. to win, but most importantly, to save harry.

“look who we have here” voldemort spoke, “little miss y/n potter. isn’t she your friend?” he turned around to the man trailing behind him.

peter ignored the question, as he lifted up his head and looked you straight in the eye. tears streamed down your face as you mustered your friend.

„you gave me your word“ you spat at him, though he didn’t react and it made you wonder. wonder why he did this to you, wonder why he couldn’t keep his promise, but mostly wonder why there wasn’t a bit of shame or regret to be found in his eyes. 

You turned away from Peter and looked at Voldemort

“what do you want from me?” you asked, trying to hide how scared you were.

“not much” voldemort grinned “just the boy” 

you furrowed your eyebrows, as if you didn’t know what he was talking about. “which boy?” 

voldemort laughed. the sound made you shiver.

“pettigrew, you wait downstairs” 

peter took one last look at you, before he turned around and left the room. 

“you tell me where the boy is, now or i’ll kill you” 

your heart beat fast as you watched the man infront of you. of course you had known what he would do to you, but you had expected it much sooner. 

suddenly, you felt more courage than ever before in your life. “you listen to me carefully, when i tell you, that i will never, not in this life, not if you torture me, not if you cut off every single body part of mine, tell you, where harry is. i would die a thousand deaths, just to keep him safe”

“stupid girl” voldemort screamed filled with range, “crucio”

you fell down on your knees, screaming in pain

“tell me. where the boy is. now!” he demanded 

“never!” you screamed, reaching for your wand in the back pocket of your jeans and with all the strength you had left, send a stupefy his way. he blocked the curse and looked even angrier than before.

“now you listen to me closely, you stupid, stupid girl. i was generous, i gave you a choice. all you had to do was tell me where the boy was and you could’ve lived. but stupid girls like you never listen. i’m gonna kill you now and you will see that it won’t be fast. thats what you get for talking back and disrespecting the dark lord.”

“i will never have any respect for you” 

only seconds after, the pain set in and it was the worst pain you had ever felt in you entire life. you felt how the curse was draining your life out. how it killed every cell in your body painfully slow. voldemort watched you for a few minutes. satisfaction on his face as he watched you cry out in pain. after a few minutes he had enough and turned to leave. he wanted that you died all by yourself. 

but still, trough all the pain you were experiencing you managed to grab just a bit of the spreaded powder, that was laying next to you on the floor.

and in mere seconds, just as voldemort turned his back to you and the muffliato you had performed on harry was about to dissolve, because of how fast it had to be cast and only you concentrating on it kept it working, you tossed the powder into the fireplace and mumbled the code word, that would send harry immediately to dumbledore. 

voldemort reacted too late. as he turned around he could only see the green flames brightly glowing. no one to be seen in the fireplace itself. he looked at you laying on the ground, still in so much pain, but smiling triumphantly. 

“oh great dark lord, didn’t you notice the little baby in the fireplace?”

voldemort growled at you and with one last swoosh of his wand he had slashed your troat. he took one long satisfied look at you, your eyes open, glisterned from laughing and a big smile on your lips. 

he left the room. filled with range and anger. even if voldemort had killed you, he had still lost.

peter opened the door to the little room, after voldemort had left. his eyes fell to your body on the floor, a tear streaming down his face. even if you were dead, he could still read the betrayal and unanswered question in your eyes. 

“peter” you seemed to say to him. “what did you do?”

it was probably that question alone that would haunt him to the end of his days...
