Harry has the most chaotic Bi-energy in the hbp. He's mind literally has only two things going on, Ginny Weasley and Draco Malfoy.
It's not even in different contexts, one second he is thinking about Ginny and another Draco.
For example this scene. Hermione is telling Harry about how she heard Romilda and other girls were talking about giving him Love portion so he that takes them to Slughorn's party. And she advices him to ask someone soon so the other girls will stop the nonsense. Our boy Harry is deep in thoughts how he wished he could take Ginny as a date. And the next thing in his mind is 'If Romilda could get the love portion into Hogwarts, Draco can get the necklace in too'.
And I'm like, my dude decide who you gonna choose.

sirius black/nymphadora tonks
thank you very much for the asks, anons!
so - first things first - harry "unexamined bisexuality" potter being convinced there could be no other explanation for tonks' melancholy during half-blood prince than her being in love with sirius [despite the fact that she's a frontline soldier in the war that horrifying news is being reported about every single day; despite the fact that her aunt is one of the most prominent death eaters and she and her family are, therefore, in enormous danger] is one of the single funniest things he ever does.
[harry low-key thinking tonks is annoying, and that sirius could do better, is another.]
but - outside of harry's sordid little fantasies - i'm actually going with... potential winner, if some very careful wrangling with the characters is done.
it's quite striking in order of the phoenix that sirius and tonks barely interact with each other - tonks spends a lot of time with lupin [unsurprisingly] and kingsley, as well as with ginny and hermione, both of whom clearly adore her, but she and sirius never actually speak to one another outside of an operational [an order meeting, an order mission] context.
[which is why harry should have listened to ron, who is the only person to point out in half-blood prince that it makes no sense for harry and hermione to think that tonks' grief - as enormous as it is - might relate to sirius, who she barely knew.]
but there's a plausible explanation for the distance between sirius and tonks in canon which i think could get very interesting in the right hands...
which is that the tonks of order of the phoenix is... kind of unserious about the war. she's introduced as a bolshy, vibrant, loud, chatty, cocky young woman - holding her own and standing out among a group of people who are all much older and more battle-worn than she is. she takes up space and she shows off [her taking requests to transform at the dinner table! iconic!]. and - while she clearly recognises that the order's mission is dangerous and important - she also clearly thinks that being in a secret resistance society is... cool.
this is not - in any way - how the post-azkaban sirius - a man whose attitude towards being in the resistance is that the main thing worth doing for your cause is dying for it - understands things.
but it clearly is how the sirius of the first war thought.
the inherent tragedy of james and sirius' young adulthood is that they both clearly believed themselves invincible. there is a carelessness woven through their [very real] commitment to the anti-voldemort cause - in how james and lily behave when they're in hiding; in the secret keeper swap; in how, as sirius says, "the risk would've been what made it fun for james" - which directly contributes to james' death and sirius' earth-shattering grief.
i think there's something incredibly compelling which could be done with an exploration of this dynamic - sirius thinking that tonks doesn't take being in the order seriously as a manifestation of his own immeasurable guilt; tonks thinking that sirius' nihilism is just as dangerous as arrogance, thinking that, when the odds are against you as it is, you need to be cocky enough to believe that you can wiggle your way out of anything - particularly in the way it might start to chip through the layers of sorrow which surround sirius during order of the phoenix and help him begin - tentatively - towards forgiving himself for his role in james' death, finding his grief an easier burden to carry, and accepting that - while, yes, there are things worth dying for - there are things worth living for as well.
harry would be shaking though, i fear.

Maggie Smith, Oscar-winning star of stage and screen, dies aged 89 đ
Dame Maggie Smith, the masterful, scene-stealing actor who won an Oscar for the 1969 film âThe Prime of Miss Jean Brodieâ and gained new fans in the 21st century as the dowager Countess of Grantham in â Downton Abbeyâ and Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, died early Friday in a London hospital.
Margaret Natalie Smith was born in Ilford, on the eastern edge of London, on 28th December 1934. Her father was assigned in 1939 to wartime duty in Oxford, where her theatre studies at the Oxford Playhouse School led to a busy apprenticeship.
One of Smithâs most iconic early roles was as Desdemona in Shakespeare's Othello. Laurence Olivier spotted her talent, invited her to be part of his original National Theatre company and cast her as his co-star in a 1965 film adaptation of âOthello.â
Laurence Olivier offered Smith the part opposite his Othello
Smith was frequently rated the preeminent British female performer of a generation with two Oscars, a clutch of Academy Award nominations and a shelf full of acting trophies.
The role that brought Smith international fame came in 1969 when she played the determined non-conformist teacher in the title role of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
The role of Jean Brodie, alongside future husband Robert Stephens, won her an Oscar
The film was adapted from the 1961 novel by Muriel Spark, set in 1930s Edinburgh, and the character was based on the author's inspirational teacher.
"Jean Brodie," in which she played a dangerously charismatic Edinburgh schoolteacher, brought her the Academy Award for best actress, and the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) as well.
Maggie Smith won critical acclaim for her role as Betsey Trotwood in a BBC adaptation of David Copperfield at the turn of the century. The part also brought her Bafta and Emmy nominations.
She appeared with a young Daniel Radcliffe in David Copperfield.
She starred alongside a young Daniel Radcliffe, who she would later act with again in the Harry Potter films.
In 2001, she took on the role of Professor Minerva McGonagall in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Dame Magie Smith is known to millions as Professor Minerva McGonagall from Harry Potter. Dame Maggie was reportedly the only actor JK Rowling specifically asked to star in the films.
In 2007, while working on Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince, Dame Maggie was diagnosed with breast cancer but continued filming. She was given the all-clear after two years of treatment.
From 2010, she was the acid-tongued Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the hit TV period drama â Downton Abbey,â a role that won her legions of fans, three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe and a host of other awards nominations.
Downton Abbey - Violet Crawley - The period ITV drama ran from 2001 to 2015, followed by two films
One of Smith's most famous later roles was as a homeless woman in The Lady In The Van, as Miss Shepherd, a redoubtable woman who lived for years in her vehicle on Bennettâs London driveway.
Smith first played Miss Shepherd on stage in 1999 and earned an Olivier nomination for Best Actress
Smith added a supporting actress Oscar for âCalifornia Suiteâ in 1978, Golden Globes for âCalifornia Suiteâ and âA Room with a View,â and BAFTAs for lead actress in âA Private Functionâ in 1984, âA Room with a Viewâ in 1986, and âThe Lonely Passion of Judith Hearneâ in 1988.
She also received Academy Award nominations as a supporting actress in âOthello,â âTravels with My Aunt,â âRoom with a Viewâ and âGosford Park,â and a BAFTA award for supporting actress in âTea with Mussolini.â On stage, she won a Tony in 1990 for âLettice and Lovage.â
She was one of a select group of actors to win the treble of big US awards, with two Oscars, four Emmys and a Tony - as well as seven Baftas and an honorary Olivier Award in the UK đŹđ§
Maggie Smith was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire đ
the equivalent of a knight, in 1990.
She will never be forgotten & her characters will continue on, for future generations to love đ« đ
RIP Maggie Smith 1934-2024 đ„ đ€

7 Weird and Surprising Facts About Maggie Smith
7 Weird and Surprising Facts About Maggie Smith
Discover some lesser-known and quirky facts about Dame Maggie Smith, from never watching Downton Abbey to battling cancer while filming Harry Potter. These fun and surprising tidbits give a glimpse into the life of one of the most iconic actresses in British cinema.
1-Sheâs never watched Downton Abbey: Despite being one of the most iconic characters on the show as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess, Maggie Smith has admitted that sheâs never actually watched Downton Abbey because she felt it would be âtoo frustratingâ to see herself on screen.
2-She performed on stage just days after major surgery: Maggie Smith showed immense dedication to her craft when, in 1988, she underwent surgery for a perforated appendix. Remarkably, she returned to the stage only 10 days later to perform in *Lettice and Lovage. That level of commitment is both weirdly intense and inspiring!
3-She has an impressive Harry Potter â Downton Abbey connection: Maggie Smith starred in both Harry Potter as Professor McGonagall and Downton Abbey, but sheâs joked about how young fans who recognize her often confuse her two iconic roles, sometimes calling her âProfessor Dowager!â
4-She battled cancer while filming Harry Potter: While filming *Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Maggie Smith was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Despite her illness and chemotherapy, she continued working on the films, showing her resilience and dedication.
5-She once accidentally insulted her co-star Laurence Olivier: Early in her career, while rehearsing with the legendary Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith inadvertently insulted him by remarking that the cast wasnât getting enough direction. Olivier, who was also the director, took it personally. Fortunately, they reconciled, and Olivier later praised her talent.
6-She was rejected for her first audition: At the start of her career, Maggie Smith was rejected by the Oxford Playhouse for being âtoo thinâ and âtoo short.â Despite this, she persisted, and eventually, her talent won out, leading to an illustrious career.
7-Her honorary Oscar came in a surprising category: In 1979, she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film California Suite. Ironically, she played a woman who was nominated for, but didn't win, an Oscar in the movie! It's a quirky example of life imitating art.

RED RISING BOOK 1 CHARACTER TIER LIST + FULL THOUGHTS! >:D
Below is my review of book 1, I'll go into spoilers. After this, I'm either gonna move onto a different book or try to find golden son. Not sure which one will happen.
But yeah, great book, 4 stars, or 8/10! Definitely just set up for things to come in the trilogy, but also a really good setup & story.
PREFACE: This is from the perspective from somebody who DOESN'T read books for fun too often. Red Rising was the first book in a long while I chose to read for fun since Harry Potter in 1st year high school (I didn't even finish the series, I stopped at the start of Half Blood Prince). So you're dealing with one of the most casual guys who went into the series. Another thing: I came into the series thinking it would be similar to Nimona (2023) or Sylas's story from League, since I brought up these two things when I first asked for book recs, so my expectations were HORRIBLY wrong (kind of, sylas's lore is pretty similar and the only difference is that sylas gets STRAIGHT into action but also his characterization sucks). So my perspective is strange, is what I'm saying, and I am far from the most valid person to be seriously reviewing this book. I'm just sharing this for fun lmao :P
I'm just writing the first few things that come to my mind, so stick with me people! These are messy, unfiltered thoughts.
This book is rough, really whumpy at the start of the book, but it's good whump. It's just setting up and establishing what's to come and to make all the payoffs feel better by showing us the insane suffering Darrow goes through. But also? Damn. That was rough. it felt like grimdark (this is coming from the perspective of a guy who actively avoids all things grimdark - with the exception of whump fanfics on ao3).
And then we get into the institution, and I just went, "oh. This is hunger games harry potter." I was a bit disappointed to be honest, I know the book is called "red rising" and it literally means "the slow rise of a red" so he still needs to prepare himself for what's to come, but also... eh?????? Someone in Reddit called this segment "pierce brown kidnapping fans of the hunger games when it was at the peak of its popularity", which âšïžiconic behaviorâšïž but I was a bit confused as we took this academy stuff seriously. But slowly, I grew into it when the characters started interacting. I liked it when Darrow was interacting with others since the first half of the book felt so isolating. I liked every single scene Sevro shows up since he brings so much chaos and fun to a story that had so much downtrodden underlying sadness. The chapter 9 reveal is still hitting me, like "damn FUCK THESE GUYS BRO, WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS PLANET HAS ALREADY BEEN TERRAFORMED???" Also because sevro's fucking awesome, but that's besides the point. The same goes for Darrow's scenes with Virginia and pre-sword fight Cassius, but they aren't as iconic as Sevro.
Darrow is a super compelling protagonist for the story he's in. Making him this power fantasy fulfillment guy makes things feel all the more liberating when he beats the shit out of a guy, it's sort of like a shonen anime protagonist, I guess (i don't watch anime btw). Bro talks about Eo a bit too much though đ it got to the point where it got a bit funny, but some moments do hit... before virginia came into the picture as the better love interest since she's girlboss and eo is seraphine from league of legends.
Most of the characters are well written or awesome! The proctors are real loveably hateable pieces of shit I wanted 200 feet below the dirt, and I loved seeing them get beat up. Except you Fitchner, you are iconic, and you gave us Sevro. I love you. Antonia, Cassius & Jackal are just set up here, and it's mildly disappointing? I am super happy the finale ended up being "FUCK THE PROCTORS" but also that stole time away from finishing off the inter-student conflicts. Yeah those will 100% be explored in the rest of the books with more time to do so, but damn :/ the last time we see Antonia, I think she just stands there at a castle to remind us she exists??? Whatever, watching the proctors get shit on was exactly what I needed to want to see more out of this series.
I was a bit disappointed when Darrow ended up being the only red we explore in this book. I was kind of disappointed when Darrow just speaks with a gold accent the entire time, I hope later in the series he speaks like a red again because I have a red bias and hate fancy ass shit. From a book called "red rising", there aren't too many reds after part 2 which I found odd for a revolution story about a red taking control over the system. Titus? Ohoh! FUCK HIM! why did they write him to be this rapist guy, and he just exists to let darrow know he isn't the only fake gold at the institute. I was mildly hoping we would get to see another red-turned-gold team up with darrow as a 100% trustworthy ally since I felt like we needed it after all the loneliness Darrow goes through, but sadly no :(
OH AND THE ACTION SCENES HELL YEAH!!! Reddit wasn't kidding when they talked about how bloodydamn GOOD the fight scenes are. I got spoiled that "Clang! Clang! Clang! Confess!" means something, and I don't even know who is fighting who, but I want to read the whole series just to get to that point because it sounds badass.
But uhhh this series came to me at a rough point in my life. It was hard to read some parts of it and I took a few breaks. Yeah, I read the whole thing in 2 weeks, but also just to fill myself with some sort of closure when I felt sad. I felt good coming out of it, but during? UHHHHHH-
These disorganized thoughts are getting messy, if you have any questions about specific things, comment them for me to answer. I might. đ„°
Story: 7/10, just set up but good set up
Characters: 9/10, bloodydamn good, almost all of them. I can tell, despite my initial disappointment for some of them since I know this is a book SERIES, so we will be seeing more of them soon.
Personal Enjoyment: ????/10, felt too sad at some points, absolutely adored this book in others.
Quality: 9/10, amazing writing, I want to buy all the books JUST to support Pierce Brown, I'm not even sure if I will be reading them, I just feel like throwing money at him.
Overall Score: 8/10, scared to continue, but damn I want to continue.

If you love Harry Potter, one of the best places to visit in the world is Oxford, England. The movies were filmed here, and while Oxford is the oldest English-speaking University in the world, it's also home to MANY filming locations from the Harry Potter series. What I love so much about the connection between Harry Potter and Oxford is that Rowling came and got so much inspiration here. From characters, names, dress, and Hogwarts itself. Just walking the streets makes you feel like you're on a movie set. Except it's real life! I live in Oxford, England and I've taken dozens of Harry Potter tours and explored as much as I can. While London boasts an amazing array of Harry Potter filming locations and of course, the Warner Brother's Studio Tour, if you love the movie, Oxford is the best spot. We could just switch Oxford's name to âOx-wartsâ at this point! (That's Oxford + Hogwarts combined.) It's hard to tell what I've done more: explored the historic streets of Oxford, or watched the enchanting world of Harry Potter unfold on screen. The magical series is one of my all-time favorites, capturing the essence of adventure and wonder. From the majestic architecture of Hogwarts to the charming nooks of Diagon Alley, Harry Potterâs universe is intricately tied to the real-world charm of Oxford. The cityâs timeless beauty and academic grandeur made it the perfect backdrop for many iconic scenes in the films. See all the places Harry Potter film locations are in the UK and beyond! Living here in Oxford, I embarked on a quest to discover some of the beloved Harry Potter filming locations that bring the magic to life. Join me as I walk you through these enchanting spots, complete with some of my favorite quotes from the series. There are countless quotes that encapsulate the magic and mystery of Harry Potter. Oxford, with its storied history and breathtaking architecture, is the perfect place to experience that same sense of wonder. Here, Iâll share both the filming locations and quotes that make you feel like youâre stepping right into the wizarding world. Not only will this guide give you all the Harry Potter locations in Oxford, it's loaded with my top tips and tricks for visiting. Was Harry Potter Filmed in Oxford? Yes, indeed! Oxford's historic charm and magnificent architecture made it the perfect setting for many iconic scenes in the Harry Potter films. The city's grand colleges and libraries provided the ideal backdrop to bring the magical world of Hogwarts to life. From the moment you step into Oxford, youâll feel like youâve been transported straight into the wizarding world. Which movies were filmed in Oxford? Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone (2001) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) Harry Potter Filming Locations in Oxford Where was Harry Potter filmed in Oxford? The city of Oxford, with its historic university buildings, was the perfect setting for some of the most iconic and mesmerizing scenes from the Harry Potter films. These stunning locations not only brought the magic to life but also inspired the filmmakers to create larger-scale sets at Warner Bros. Studios here in the UK. Here are the places that Harry Potter was filmed. BUT, please note: all of the college require entrance fees and have hours. Which means you have to plan ahead of time. Many of the places do require that you come on a tour so if you want to go on a tour, I suggest you book in advance. Below I list my favorite tours. Christ Church College â Bodley Staircase Christ Church College Dining Hall Christ Church College Cloisters Bodleian Library â Divinity School Bodleian Library â Duke Humfreyâs Library New College â Cloisters New College â Courtyard & Tree Harry Potter Tree â Blenheim Palace

Rowling got the inspiration for Harry's lightning bolt scar The black and white robes that students wear Blackwell's Bookshop Turf Tavern â where the Potter crew hung out after filming Magical Shops â House of Wonders and Scriptum St Mary's Church â Harry Potter Stars Guided Tours of Harry Potter in Oxford Guided tours of Oxford are, in short, amazing. I've quite literally been on dozens of tours. Whether for Harry Potter or learning the history of Oxford, I highly recommend them. Here are some tours I recommend. Please note: Harry Potter Tours sell out SO fast! Book in advance. Footprints Harry Potter Tour of Oxford â I've done this one a few times and is my top recommendation. They have lots of tours and are hosted by students at the university. Oxford Harry Potter Tour with Entrance to Christ ChurchâThis is probably one of the most popular tours, as you get to see THE inspiration for the Great Hall. This is also one of the biggest colleges, so it's quite grand! Oxford Harry Potter with Access to the Divinity School â Another super popular one as this gives you access to the Divinity School where the hospital scenes were filmed. Oxford Harry Potter Tour with Entrance to New College â I love New College. It's so beautiful and a great setting for exploring. This is where the Malfoy tree is as well as well as cloisters where many scenes were filmed. Studio Tour And Oxford Day Trip â If you're coming from London this tour is perfect. It gives you access to the studio plus a guided tour of Oxford. Oxford Guided Tour â a general history tour of Oxford that is so so so fascinating! Blenheim Palace Admission ticket â This is where the scene was filmed with Snape and James was filmed. The palace itself is magnificent and worth the 20 minute trip. Oxford Ghost TourâIf you want something a little different, I really like this ghost tour! It usually doesn't sell out, which is a huge plus! It's also nice it goes at night. Self-Guided Harry Potter Tour of Oxford Prefer to explore at your own pace? A self-guided tour is the perfect option. Hereâs a detailed itinerary to help you discover the magical locations on your own: Christ Church Christ Church is usually most associated with Harry Potter as so many significant and iconic scenes were filmed here! It was also the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland as Lewis Carroll was a math tutor here. Please note that Christ Church requires an entrance fee. Visiting Christ Church can be a bit pricey at ÂŁ16 per adult, but if you're a Harry Potter fan, it's absolutely worth it! The place truly looks and feels like Hogwarts. Just be sure to book your tour in advance. You can do so here directly or part of a tour. Christ Church Hall â No place else feels like Hogwarts y'all! This magnificent hall served as the inspiration for Hogwarts' Great Hall. Its grandeur, with long wooden tables and high ceilings, mirrors the magical feasts and sorting ceremonies. As you walk through, you can almost hear Dumbledore's welcoming speech. In truth, many of the dining halls in Oxford Colleges are quite grand! I love Magdalen's! Christ Church College â Bodley Staircase The iconic staircase is where in the first movie, Harry Potter and The Sorceror's Stone, Professor McGonagall first greeted Harry, Hermione, and Ron, as well as the rest of the students. Standing on these steps, you can feel the excitement and anticipation of the young wizards entering Hogwarts for the first time. This is right before they enter the great hall and is one of my favorite scenes.
The staircase itself is so magnificent and you can see why the movies were so influenced by Oxford and Christ Church! The staircase is used in: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Philosopher) meet McGonagal, and at the end of the movie as well- Ron and Hermione are at the top and ask if Harry is Alright. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secretsâ when he's late for School and inside Riddle's Diary Christ Church College Cloisters â We are lucky the studio ended up using so many actual places as scenes for Harry Potter. The reason is they didn't have time to build all the sets. So many of the scenes of the students walking the halls is set in Christ Church Cloisters as well as some other places around Britain. We also see the cloisters of Christ Church used in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone when Hermione shows Harry's dad trophy from Quidditch. Get my guides for all Harry Potter filming locations, tips and so much more! Harry Potter Locations and guides! How to Get from London to Oxford In truth, it's very easy to get from London to Oxford by taking the train for a short, one hour journey. Direct services run from London Paddington (serving Oxford station) and London Marylebone (serving Oxford and Oxford Parkway stations). I recommend this train from London Paddington. The History of Oxford Oxford, one of the oldest and most prestigious university cities in the world, has a rich and storied history that dates back over a thousand years. Its origins can be traced to the late Saxon period, with the establishment of a settlement at a strategic river crossing. The University of Oxford itself began to take shape in the 12th century, evolving from informal gatherings of scholars to a formal institution of higher learning. Throughout the Middle Ages, Oxford grew in prominence as a center of education, producing notable scholars and contributing significantly to intellectual and religious life in England. The city's medieval architecture, including its iconic colleges, libraries, and churches, reflects its long-standing tradition of academic excellence and cultural heritage. Over the centuries, Oxford has been at the heart of significant historical events, from the English Reformation to the Civil War, and continues to be a symbol of scholarly pursuit and historical significance. Oxford is made up of 29 colleges spread throughout the city. So you don't just visit one, but many of the colleges. Oxford's enchanting scenery also served as a backdrop for many scenes in the Harry Potter films, further cementing its place in modern pop culture. See all the places Harry Potter was filmed.

I fell in love with Snape at 2 AM on a Sunday morning, when Quirrel revealed that he was the real villain all along... because as mean as Snape was to Harry, he went out of his way to protect him. He was a more complicated antihero than the book really called for and that intrigued me.
I got into the series before book 3 was released, joined some of the first HP fan sites and chat rooms, followed the the move over to LiveJournal, so I got to watch the fanon for Snape grow and change with each new piece of information we obtained. Snape fans caught pretty quick onto the flower language in his question to Harry in book 1 (asphodel "My sorrow folIows you to the grave" / wormwood "bitter sorrow"), and since asphodel is a type of lily, was he referring to Lily Potter? Since no one knew much about Lily at the time, the theory stalled out. Snape was definitely telling Harry he regretted something, but what was a mystery.
I assumed he was pureblood of some wealth up until book 3 and the Shrieking Shack scene... I remember being very irritated because his accent changed and it seemed "out" of character for him to talk like that -- I eventually put together that it was probably meant to indicate that his family was not only poor but that he grew up in a historically impoverished area.
Draco's the only Slytherin that we KNOW is rich but the Author gives an old money inbred snob vibe to the whole house. Even Tom Riddle, orphan, doesn't talk like he's poor. We later find out he has an old money background on his father's side and impoverished purebloods on his mother's. (Voldemort using Cockney slang would have been divine though)
So for someone with Snape's accent to end up in Slytherin, I knew he had to be scrappy, and that was just further confirmation that he had layers that none of the other characters in the book had.
When they announced the title of Book 6 I knew that the Half-Blood Prince had to be Snape, because it would explain his accent and how he entered and survived Slytherin.
When Snape killed Dumbledore I still believed that he was a "good" guy and that there had to be more to the story, because Snape's motives outside the classroom are never obvious.
Then came book 7, aka Harry Potter and the Compulsory Heterosexual Relationships, also a lot of fucking camping.
When Snape's connection to Lily is finally revealed I remember being vaguely disappointed by the romantic connotation. It seemed like a very cliche motivation. I'm fine with it being a romantic relationship, I just think it's not done convincingly.
The Author wanted a Heathcliff and Cathy, Wuthering Heights style tragic romance for Snape and Lily. They forgot that part of what makes Heathcliff/Catherine so iconic is that Catherine is as unhinged and cruel as Healthcliff at times, they are toxic4toxic 4ever.
The Author got the Snape/Healthcliff parallel right, but unfortunately wrote Lily to be a Madonna figure, since she's the mother of The Savior. Lily's perfect to priggishness, because the woman who will deliver unto us The Savior can't have flaws, because she's just a vehicle and there's no point in making her complicated unless you want to raise questions the sanctity of The Savior.
That's why when read shallowly Snape comes off as an obsessive incel who is unredeemed by his actions. Loving a Madonna figure is compulsory, so loving her is unremarkable.
The Author needed to properly flesh out their magic system so that "dark arts" wasn't just code for violent facist, and then not wait until the end of the series to flesh out Lily's character in one chapter, so that Lily could be complicated.
Lily needs to have a real struggle when she chooses James over Snape, just as Catherine does when she chooses Edgar over Healthcliff. For Catherine choosing Healthcliff and their mutual darkness means choosing figurative/social destruction. As written, Lily choosing Snape means choosing literal destruction because his darkness is tied explicitly to anti Muggleborn beliefs.
early snape fans, what were your first impressions? did you clock his blood heritage early? what did everyone think? did you immediately call bs when he killed dumbledore? any inklings towards lily?
