       Harlow Archer had always been a stubbornly self reliant young girl. True she was loyal and kind to those that she cared about and who she let in. But in the end she didn't like asking for help, opening up about her emotions, or letting new people in. But Harlow didn't seem too bad off growing up in her self enforced isolation. She had things she loved that she was able to focus on and that anyone who paid attention could see her passions fuel her. She might be alone but everyone figured that her her alone didn't mean lonely. And while it sometimes was sometimes it wasn't and she genuinely did like being on her own, without the world to hurt her more. She had carefully selected people and that was all that she needed.

       This war, it all felt like a cruel joke. It felt like the moment she opened up the whole world decided that she actually didn't need or deserve any of that. It wasn't a new feeling but reccently that feeling would creep up on her in the middle of the night. it was like the feelings that she had been dealing with didn't bubble up so often but now that she was alone running from death eaters and the very real fact she could die or the people she loved could. It was torture, it was torture that she couldn't end without getting the people she loved hurt. It was that thought, the thought of those she loved getting hurt, to keep her going all on her own. She lied to herself telling herself that if she could be alone and perfectly happy for four years at hogwarts she was fine now. She knew it was a lie deep down. But it was easier to lie to herself than to give up and hurt them.

       Harlow would give anything to be home, to see her friends again, to be held by Harry. She hadn't expected the last part to hurt so hard. She always thought that she didn't need a boyfriend and probably wouldn't have one until she graduated. When Harlow realized her feelings she felt stupid, crying in the bathroom to lucy about the fact that she liked a boy. Surely Harlow should know better than to have a crush on Harry. But no matter how hard she would try to ignore it the feelings would always come back. Hearing him from across the hall, catching his eyes in class, being in Dumbledore's Army meetings it would set her off into a flurry of emotions for the rest of the day. Telling him her feelings in sixth year was terrifying but falling in love with him had felt like coming home. They knew it was doomed, Harlow knew he could die that voldemort was back and wanted to kill him. But she found safety in him that she hadn't felt in so long.

       Harlow didn't expect him to break it off the day after he got safely transported to the burrow, it was like a gut punch to her. She hated it because she couldn't even be a normal teenager and blame him for it. She thought back to that day when they got an hour alone.

       "Harry, why" She said she could hear the stubborn sadness in her voice that demanded to be heard.

       "Because" She could hear the heavy sadness in his voice too. "This war is here and moody died, and I can't keep you safe and do what dumbledore left me with. Please understand."

       "I do." Was all she could say, her hazel eyes filling with tears that refused to go away. "I love you you know."

       "I know," She looked up and saw a tear fall down his cheek. "I love you too."

       It seemed everyone could tell something changed because Mrs.Weasley didn't pair them up even though she was very clearly trying to keep him away from Hermione and Ron. And no one bothered her when her shower was a little extra long that night. Ginny seemed to want to say something but ended up deciding not to. That night she held onto her pillow craving the comfort of the teddy bear she left at home.

       The cruel part was that Harlow had understood why. she couldn't even argue. It was something she had practically seen coming. But she fell in love with him anyway. Thinking to that night always hurt her. Thinking about him and knowing there was nothing she could even do. As much as she loved him and she wanted to be with him he had been right. But Harlow had been prepared to risk her life for him, and if she was given the chance she still would. She didn't know exactly what they were doing but she had been able to get out of ron that it was something to do with voldemort. It was scary enough that Voldemort had already been trying to hunt him down but Harry was practically doing the same. The worry kept her awake at night. Of course she worried for her other friends and family. mom, dad, Whitney, El, Lucy, Juni, Luna, Hermione, Harper Ginny, Ron and Harry. It was like a mantra. The people she loved. The people who if they died it could quite possibly tear her apart.

       Harlow had done her best to ignore that constant fear though. She had to stay strong. She couldn't give up. That was always the undercurrent as she camped, ran, and fought. It was the under current when she saw those she loved again. And she managed it. Until the battle seemed over when Voldemort said the words she had feared so much. She lost all her composure and cried out. She just simply could not stay strong anymore.

❝ Paisley had wanted to be a hero since they were twelve years old. Like most kids in Gotham City, she had grown up hearing stories about the Batman roaming Gotham's dark streets every night, delivering justice and putting criminals away where they belonged. They had noted every new Robin, every new Batgirl, and been thrilled when Batwoman first arrived on the scene. But when the Green Arrow made his debut in Starling City, Paisley realized exactly what Gotham, even with all its badass black-clad angels of justice, was lacking.

Gotham needed an archer. And Paisley, twelve years old but already able to outshoot her professional archery instructor, was the just the person to give it one.

And so they had trained. She had spent every second of her spare time improving her shooting skills until she very well could have gone to the Olympics if they'd chosen, and working with the MMA instructor she'd begged their parents for when she'd turned fifteen until they were sure she was nearly on Batman's level. And on their twenty-third birthday, right after starting her second year of university, Paisley made their debut on Gotham's streets, taking down several muggers and thieves on her first night and capturing the attention of Gotham's media.

While the rest of Gotham was mainly amused by this new purple-clad vigilante calling themself Sagittarius (an archer! In Gotham! Can you believe it?) Jason Todd was intrigued. He'd seen the videos; this chick had major skills, and he wanted to know who she was. And as it turned out, she wasn't that hard to find. A first meeting occurred while sharing the takedown of a drug shipment, a conversation happened, and an agreement was reached: neither young vigilante particularly wanted to be a sidekick or a partner, but there was no shame in lending or taking a hand whenever they crossed paths, right?

Two years later, Paisley's nighttime career, as well as their deal with Red Hood, is still going strong. She works as an secretary at Wayne Industries during the day, slings arrows by night, and pretty much always hopes to run into the scarlet-hooded anti-hero, who isn't nearly as cold and intimidating as the public seems to think. But with every assist, every trading of back-and-forth banter, they can't help but wonder even more: who is this dry-witted gunslinger, and how can she be this attracted to him when they've never even seen his face?

Well, Paisley supposes, nothing is ever normal or unconfusing in Gotham. And when you're a vigilante, even less so. ❞

Yessssssssss it's Harlow time BABEY. I'm just gonna throw out some completely not interconnected thoughts about various things from the series I don't think I've talked about yet.

Harlow Stormrage has a bad case of "I can fix him" syndrome and honestly considering the fact that she got the dude who hated her the most to be her ally in the first book, it's entirely understandable.

Harlow and Tiger's moms were like literally the best friends ever. Just two cool adventurer ladies who go on their little journeys and then like... Disappear never to be seen again.

There are multiple characters who originally were only gonna show up in the last two books but their characters were so flat. I just had them so I could have like... the people, if that makes any sense. But most of them I did create some book plots to throw in there and now they're some of my fave characters (y'all who know how much I love the Karlsson twins would think I was crazy for how they are barely there in the original plots. Holly and Eerikki Karlsson im so sorry)

Also sort of building off of that last point, the character of Harlow's dad was supposed to be like completely irredeemable in the first ideas of the book. He really sucked. And then he was supposed to die in the last book, not even as an act of heroic sacrifice. Just like... Oof he's dead. And it was supposed to be Harlow struggling with the fact that she missed and grieved him even though he was a shit dad. But when I added more than just the three books, I expanded on his character and I was like "okay I can work with this way better" and now he feels like a normal person. And based on how I wrote Harlow's mom, I don't think she would've married someone who was a complete and total asshole. Of course he does still make the god awful decision to disown Harlow at one point but then it's explained later, and while it's not excusable, it does make more sense as to why he did it. And after Tiger "dies" (he's fine. Could you imagine if he wasn't? Gosh that would've been awful if I had actually decided to kill him off. Let's just say y'all do NOT want to hear what I wrote for the original final scene of the books it's depressing as shit) Harlow's dad is way more human and sympathetic to his mourning child and like it's a whole thing where he finally sees her as a child.

Y'all I'm constantly reminding myself "oh yeah these characters are babies. What." Like when I started the books I was as old as Harlow in book one. Now I'm as old as like Careless in the last book. (Also I hated Careless when I was 12. Now he's my fave I love my archer son)

Y'all I need y'all to know the amount of characters that we're originally supposed to die in the last book but I got too attached. Like obvi there was Harlows dad and Tiger (Yeah weird literally why did I do that) but there was also like half of the mentioned adults (I was so ready to just invent some orphans and for why) and also Eerikki Karlsson. Who in this plot líne had like no part and there would've been no weight to his death because who even was that guy??? Anyway yeah I'm glad I got over that. 14 yo me just liked being edgy and torturing my readers ig.
