Astorvember Day 15: HARBINGER

Father and son are reunited after several years! I'm sure it's going to be the happiest of reunions <3

My original script for Harbinger was a lot more lighthearted (I'll put it below the cut because it does happen before this scene) but I ended up being more interested in drawing the cult and this final interaction between Herod and Astor. I'm not entirely sure how long it's been since they were last face-to-face, but the years clearly haven't been kind to Herod.

Maybe in his old age he's feeling something like remorse, or empathy for the son he mistreated. Or perhaps he is simply scared of the inevitable . . . Whichever it is, it's too little too late.

[Astor is walking through the woods when he hears a rustling noise in the bushes. He pauses, then lean forwards. Whatever it is, it isn't going to hurt him. In fact, he think he needs to see whatever it is]

Astor: "Hello?"

[the rustling pauses. Then a small metallic tendril peeps out of the greenery]

Astor: "Hi little one"

[a panel showing the full thing. It's a tiny round guardian, glowing red with the color of fate]

Astor thinks a . . . guardian. I've heard the legends, of course, but it's so small. Should it touch it?

[the next panel is a full-page spread. It's a gradient of red to black, with guardian-limbs crisscrossing over the page. A glowing red eye, like that on the circlet, peers out of the gloom]

Also a note (even though I know I'm rambling at this point)- Astor still doesn't "worship" Ganon. But he's at a point where he understands that for whatever reason, it's his Fate to aid the Calamity's return. (I'm a little foggy on the official game timeline once the Harbinger shows up, so I'm going to look into that for plotting reasons)

at least he thought so, but in reality he's driving it like an obedient car in traffic

either he drives it like an obedient traffic car or the harbinger refuses to go faster than the (nonexistent) speed limit

For this playthrough I’ve had the DLC from the start so the EX missions are spawning in (close to) where they “fit” in the story. I don’t know when the Yiga Clan’s Retreat one will spawn though I have a guess. And as long as it’s before the final main story mission…

I’m siccing Sooga on Astor this time. :)

I didn't have enough time to draw anything serious 💀 buuuut ig I can share the headcanon that the small guardian isn't controlled by ganon 24/7 but only when really needed. Otherwise, it's just a strange little creature... as you can see, it took Astor a while to figure out how it works

Before the dlc came out I thought that Astor was a random Hylian who ran into Harbinger Ganon and from there he started with his powers, and after the dlc , I think the same thing lol, only now he is part of a cult loyal to Ganon , or perhaps for generations his family was part of this cult.

B4 - A comic - Divine Gemstones by @twist-dg New and unique designs and characterizations for Link and Zelda. Looking forward to this comic

B5 - Subscribed to an ongoing work - On My Honor by @pelicanpig - Features a teenaged Link who takes on the role of older brother/protector for Zelda. She's discovering her power and he struggles with his calling. Each chapter ratchets up the angst.

C1 - A familiar creator - A Link to the Stars by @abbyzwrites with art by the phenomenal @coffebits Set far in the future of Legend of Zelda lore. Link is a general in the Hyrulean Army, Ganondorf is his best friend and second in command, and Zelda is a brunette princess. Think Star Wars meets Starship Troopers but starring our favorite LoZ characters. The latest chapter has some tooth-achingly sweet fluff mixed in with the angst. Love Coffeebits character designs and Abby’s writing.

D1 - A new favorite - Hero by @karama9 This is one I probably wouldn't have read, but I'm glad I did! It's set in a dystopian Hyrule, with fresh and unusual characterizations for Link and Zelda, that I loved. Link is so timid, he's afraid of his own shadow and Zelda is just a girl who has to push him into accepting his role. They work together as a team to save Hyrule from Ganon. I highly recommend it. I will warn there is one chapter that features graphic material that may be disturbing to some. (but having read this story fully, as a reader it can be easily skipped.)

D4 - A genre I love - The Promise by @zeldaelmo Bridgerton meets LoZ in this one. Regency characterizations of Link and Zelda that I adore. Link is as awkward and sweet as we expect him to be, and Zelda is as witty and intelligent as always. Zelmo just posted a deliciously spicy NSFW chapter for those of us who like that sort of thing 😅😂

D5 - Picked because of the title - Princess Link: Engaged to my sister's kidnapper??? by @sparkspsps I can't wait to dive into this one. A role swap and from the title and summary it sounds funny and something I'd really like.

E1 - A complete project - Goddess of Secrecy by @amelias-hart I've really enjoyed following Link and his main companion, Endeavor on their journey across Hyrule. It's a co-op story, and Link receives plenty of help along the way so he doesn't have to face anything alone. Vast worldbuilding and lots of new and quirky characters really bring this story to life.

E4 - Less than 1000 hits or 100 notes - The Princess's Heart by @nocturnalfandomartist I followed along with this story Noct wrote for Zelink Week last year. Each chapter opens with a portion of a fairytale that is passed from generation to generation - then jumps into the narrative that follows Link and Zelda on their latest adventure.

E5 - Left a review in EH's Story Spotlights - The Mage's Lantern by @nocturnalfandomartist - another by Noct that I've only just begun reading, but am enjoying so far! Hyrule is buried beneath snow caused by a storm called The Silver Tempest (cool name). Beautiful art accompanies each chapter.

Astorvember Day 14 - DOOM

Soooo he's starting to lose it lmao. Astor does NOT vibe with the Royal Court and the fact that he knows they won't be able to hurt him (his Fate has not yet played out) means he's not pulling any punches.

Got this up a day late, but I'm not mad about it. Honestly really happy with how it turned out. Might do a quick sketch of Harbinger Ganon showing up later, for today's theme, but we'll see
