El santuario de los padres

Today was a tough day/week, for all of them really. The kids just were a bit much all over…and they needed a break. So, why not have a get together among cross dimensional friends and kids? Parent by parent, kid by kid, they walked through portals and stood in front of the six story Casita. 

There they all stood. Mamabuela, mamaisa, papa Bruno, mamalores, mamabel, papantonio (all by @gamerbearmira), pamamilo (by me), and Mamaluisa (by @yellowcry). Each of them had their own kid/kids with them and the parents looked…tired. But very happy they got this break.

(PS. Papa Bruno is Bruno who adopted Mirabel and Antonio because they were being neglected.)

“Hey luisa!” Mamabel waved at mamaluisa with her 12 year old daughter next to her. Mamaluisa waved back and so did ML! Mirabel (MLU = Mama luisa). Mamabel had 2 year old Antonio in her arms and the rest of her children in tow. 

“Hey tio!” Mamaisa waved at papa Bruno who had his 14 year old Mirabel and four year old Antonio with him. He waved back and so did his nino’s. Mamaisa was busy holding 3 year old Antonio and had 13 year old Camilo and Mirabel with her, as well as 17 year old Luisa. 

“Hola Lolo” Mamabuela waved at mamalores who had 11 year old Mirabel with her and 1 year old Antonio in her arms. Mamabuela had 12 year old Isabela, 10 year old Luisa, and six year old Mirabel with her. 

“Hey tonito!” pamamilo waved at papantonio who had 4 year old Mirabel with him. Pamamilo had 4 year old Antonio, 6 year old Isaac, 8 year old sophia, 9 year old macario, and 10 year old celeste. 

The very ground they stood on was a wide and long land full of luscious jungle. Beyond that was just a beautiful orange sunset. You could see that the jungle did end somewhere but too far for anyone to actually walk to. 

The trees and bushes gave sweet fruit and berries for the kids or adults to eat. The overall vibe was very joyful and warm. A large playground sat to the right of the house and that’s instantly where the kids above the age of 3 went. The older kids could easily watch the four year olds so it was no biggie leaving them alone. 

The tweens/teens such as PB! Mirabel, MLU! Mirabel, ML! Mirabel, MA! Isabela, and M! Mirabel, MI! Camilo, and MI! Luisa ran into the house and into a large decorated room for them to talk.  (PB = Papa Bruno, ML = Mamalores, MA = Mamabuela, MI = Mamaisa). 

As for the babies such as PB! Antonio, MI! Antonio, ML! Antonio, and MB! Antonio among other toddlers were put into a small play area next to the couch inside the living room. The “adults” all sat on their designated cushions and all let out a relaxed sigh. (And yes, I know, lot’s of baby Antonio’s)

“Tough day?” Mamabuela asked?

All she heard was tired sounds that clearly meant “yes”. Don’t get me wrong, they love their little munchkins to death, but please believe that taking care of them isn’t so easy. Especially when you're too young to even raise them…

“Antonio wouldn’t eat his vegetables for two hours” Papabruno pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Mirabel thought it was a good idea to make a toasted pb&j sandwich…almost burnt the kitchen down” Papatonio groaned. 

“Alejandra decided she wanted to see what leaves tasted like” Mamabel’s eye twitched

Parent by parent, they all listed what they went through from the following week and day. It was apparent that all of them were tired. 

“I need tea” Mamalores sighed when she put her hands on her head. A headache prominent in her head for three hours before she got here. 

“I need wine” Pamamilo chuckled

“Tea it is” Mamaisa got up and attempted to go toward the kitchen but someone stopped her. 

“I got it isa, you can relax” Papatonio put his hand on her shoulder and patted it. 

“I’m more closer to the kitchen” Mamalulu stood up, “I can go make it-”

Here we go

“Oh no, you guys can sit down, I can do it” Mamabel raised her hand in an up and down motion. Gesturing for them to sit. 

“I can do it, it’s no issue. Just tell me what tea you guys like” Pamamilo chimed in

“I can go, I don’t mind” Papabruno stood up

“I mentioned tea, so I should do it” Mamalores got off the couch, “you can sit d-”

CRASH….a window has been broken. And what went through the window? A baseball. Yards, miles, acres worth of land and yet the children decided to play baseball…directly near the house. 

And what made the situation funny, is that the outside was very quiet. Eerily quiet. Usually, the outside always sounded like kids at recess. Now?...ghost town. The kids all knew there was trouble ahead and this could be heard from outside-

“Why would you do that?” MB! Luisa shouted at ML! Mirabel. MB! Luisa sounded scared and panicked. 

“I don’t know! It was an accident!” ML! Mirabel sounded like she was on the verge of tears.

“You're gonna die” MB! Mirabel said with blatant honesty.

Inside the house all of the “adults” looked very displeased and stared directly at the baseball. 

“How about we make our own tea and deal with that later”

Here’s how sanctuary casita works:

Sanctuary Casita has about 50+ rooms inside of it. All of them are big or small depending on the kid or parent. 

Casita is six stories tall and wide as hell seeing as it needs to fit 50+ people. Sometimes the parents and kids stay long enough to sleep there but not all the time. 

It has a pool, LARGE kitchen, dance studio, library, and anything else you could think of. 

Yep, that’s about it. If you have any ideas for what else to add let me know. 

How the au works and Q&A

When the parents get stressed out they usually go to sanctuary casita for a break. 

How did they meet? Still trying to figure that out but it has to do with just a portal opening up in their room. 

All of the parents have a special pendant necklace (that was gifted to them by sanctuary Casita) they can call each other through. All they have to do is touch the pendant with a certain person in mind and they just call them. The kids above four have them too.

Do the other relatives of the parents know the sanctuary world exists? Depends on who you're asking. Papa bruno, Mamaluisa, and Mamalores, Mamabel: No/not yet. Papantonio, Mamabuela, and Pamamalio: yes. 

Do I plan on expanding this au?...sort of? I guess, mostly with incorrect quotes. 

How many times do they meet up? Every week or every other month.

Will there be angst in this au? only by request. Other than that, it's just wholesome family vibes.

I saw on one of your post that said to send you prompts sooo... can I request A childhood friend AU either Felix or Marinette moves away and then reuniting in college in France at age 14 in Felix's school with the Quantic Kids.

It was a pretty normal day, which probably meant something was going to happen. If it wasn’t a normal day, something was bound to happen as well; life in Paris hadn’t been normal in months. It being a normal day meant that Marinette was late. Super late. Way, way, so very late she might as well be early for the next thing kind of late. So late that- (oh, she’s beginning to catch onto why she’s so late.)

She knew even as she was shoving toothpaste into her bag for Tikki and brushing her teeth with frosting (wait, switch that) that she would be late, and her erratic movements were enough to convince her parents to write her an excuse. Not that anyone could blame her; she had to deal with three akumas in one night. Three akumas. Who could blame her, or anyone for that matter, for being late when there were three emotionally-stunted teens each wreaking havoc upon the city? It was a wonder that anyone else got to class on time, except for Alya, who Marinette was pretty sure didn’t sleep.

Marinette kissed both parents goodbye, thanking them again for the excuse note. They shoved a box of pastries into her hands, as was their habit whenever she didn’t leave school fast enough.

They had done it since her first day at her new school, when she was tiny and frightened of new people; having the same best friend since birth would do that. Her father had shoved a box of macaroons in her arms and her mother placed a bracing arm on her back. They told her what to do and she tried her hardest to follow their instructions, standing up straight at the front of the class, introducing herself, and offering cookies. Unfortunately, that was the same day Chloe Bourgeois was joining public school, and compared to cookies, her offer of money to ten year-olds wasn’t all that effective. And Chloe was excellent at holding a grudge.

Of course, she ended up with friends: Alya, Nino, Adrien, and everyone in art class, but it was hard to go about her first couple years of school without anyone in her corner. Becoming Ladybug really gave her the boost of confidence she needed to break out of her shell and make new friends, and now she had a whole class full.

She stopped in the classroom to put her stuff away, pausing for a second to breathe. How was she out of shape? She’s Ladybug, for heavens’ sakes! Those three akumas really took it out of her. Luckily enough, she had gym class up next. (Can you hear the sarcasm?)

“Girl! Where have you been?” Alya smiled up at her from where she was stretching her hamstrings.

“Sorry Alya, slept in too much.” She fell into place beside her, choosing one of the more advanced stretches to accomplish instead. “Three akumas yesterday; couldn’t get much sleep.”

“You need to get over yourself, Mari. Ladybug and Chat Noir always win against the akumas, this fear of yours is ridiculous.” Alya glanced at her with an incredulous look, but when she saw her intense yoga pose, the look shifted and she yelled over her shoulder. “Adrien! Get over here! Marinette’s doing her physics-defying stuff again!”

Adrien joined them, laughing at Alya’s exaggerated despair. “It’s really not that hard. You just have to-” He fell into the position easily and began matching her movements. “There.”

“How on EARTH?” Alya shrieked and threw herself to the right, toppling into Nino, who was in a shaky warrior two. They ended up in a heap on the floor, Alya staring in horror at the two still upright and Nino staring bewildered at his girlfriend. “How are you two doing that?”

“Well, I don’t know about Marinette,” Adrien moved into an upward dog, “but father insisted that I be physically active in some way and my mother used to do yoga. So I picked it up.”

Nino leaned close to Alya’s ear. “I’m not sure whether to add this to the ‘reasons Gabriel sucks’ list or be happy he has this thing with his mom.”

“Both I guess?”

“What about you Marinette?” He moved into a handstand-like position. “Why do you know all this stuff?”

My superhero moonlighting requires me to be as stretchy as a rubber band, so my partner, who is also a furry, taught me yoga. “My first best friend and I learned tai chi, and this just felt like the next step.” Not a lie, just not why she chose yoga.

“Okay, you’re fine.” Alya pointed a finger between them both. “But next time you do something weird, I’m starting a cryptid blog about you.”

“You don’t have the guts.” Marinette leaned in and Adrien flipped down to join her. It felt familiar, like deja vu; not her crush, she killed that with fire once he started dating Kagami.

“Heey!” Nino opened his arms in front of them. “Let’s change the subject, what about that new student?”

“There’s a new student?” Marinette turned to the rest of the class, who were all stretching dutifully. No new faces whatsoever. “Where are they?”

“Not here, he went to the office over a scheduling conflict. Seems like a jerk.” Alya pulled an arm behind her head, glaring with derision in the direction of the office.

“Alya, don’t.” Adrien nudged her with a foot. “First impressions don’t mean anything, right Marinette?” He shot her a playful glance.

“Don’t remind me.”

“That one was a misunderstanding. Mister Ice Cold over there doesn’t even say a word, just nods and walks into the back of the class. At least Adrien did something and he asked for forgiveness afterwards. Frosty doesn’t even look at us.” With that final comment, Alya joined the rest of the class in dodgeball.

“Is she alright?” Adrien side-eyed her.

“Yeah, she just really hates people acting superior to her. Let’s go.” Marinette shrugged it off and joined her in picking teams.

Dodgeball was a mess; it always was. The entirety of the class had been akumatized at one point, and some of the strategic prowess remained. Marinette’s team always won, which everyone attributed to her agility, but it was really that Ladybug had more practice in strategy. The only way the teams could be considered even was if Adrien was against her.

She still won; she always won. When it was all over, each team, sweating and exhausted, gravitated to the center line to shake hands and congratulate one another on a game well played. Adrien met her in the middle with a weary smirk. His hair was disheveled, but there was a spark in his eyes that made him seem more familiar than he already was.

“I almost got you that time.” He gripped her hand tight.

“All that training with Kagami is really upping your game.” She quipped, shaking his hand. “Better luck next time.”

With that promise of another match, everyone vacated the gym to the locker rooms, where Alya continued to warn Marinette against the new student.

“Even Chloe doesn’t like him and he seems like the kind of rich boy that would be right up her alley.”

“Alya, I get it. You aren’t the new guy’s biggest fan.”

“And the feeling’s mutual too.” She griped.

“So just don’t talk to him; it works with Chloe. Why not this guy too?” She wrapped an arm around her shoulder and led her to their desk.

“Fine, but I don’t have to like it.”

“You don’t have to like him either.” She pulled out her notebook and began writing down the date.

Before Alya could make another passive aggressive comment about the mystery new boy, Miss Bustier walked in, the usual skip in her step. “Class, I know I already introduced you to our new student but since some of us weren’t here for the first period,” Marinette ducked her head with a sheepish smile, “I’ve decided there’s nothing better than a redo. So, here’s Mister Culpa, introducing himself again.”

Culpa?

A boy with pale blond hair and paler skin strode into the room. He wore what could only be called business-casual, all monochrome. His eyes were a one-in-a-million breathtaking ice blue.

Culpa?

“Hello.” His eyes scanned the room emotionlessly. “As I previously said, my name is Felix Culpa and I am from-” He stopped when he reached her. “Nette?”

“Felix.” She breathed, barely even daring to say it louder, lest he disappear.

He was a blur, climbing the steps and reaching her in the time it took her to stand. There were no words when they hugged, other than the other’s name. She was on the tips of her toes, pressing her forehead to his collarbone. Felix got tall.

“I missed you.” He whispered, squeezing just a little tighter.

“I missed you too.” She laughed, pulling back to see his face. He was crying. She was crying.

“What in Ladybug’s name is happening?” Alya’s shout broke them from whatever pocket dimension they were inhabiting together. “You two know each other?”

“Alya, this is Felix.” She turned to look at her, hand still on Felix’s shoulder. “He was my best friend from birth to ten.”

“Was?” He bumped her hip with his. “Didn’t know I’ve been replaced, Netta.”

“I couldn’t contact you after I moved! I was ten and your mom never told us what her new number was.” She punched his elbow. “What are you doing here?”

“My family moved. I didn’t know you were in this area too; imagine my surprise when I see what the current events in Paris are and find out that there are superheroes and my best friend is now a borderline celebrity.” He chuckled, running a hand through his hair.

“We have to catch up some time.” She grabbed his arm.

“Certainly, maybe not here and now, though.” He gestures to the class around them, avidly watching the exchange.

“Right.” She released his arm and rubbed the back of her head awkwardly. “Coffee and macarons later then? My place?”

“I would like nothing more.” He quirked a smile that would seem tiny to anyone else, but to Marinette was as bright as the sun. “Until then.” Felix squeezed her hand and moved to the back of the class with a little wave.

She returned it, a goofy smile definitely on her face as she sat back down.

“Well,” Miss Bustier coughed, “since Felix has been so thoroughly introduced to everyone else, I suppose I should start the lesson.” And she dove into a spiel about the first World War.

“Dang, girl. Is it just me, or do you have a date after class?” Alya whispered to her from behind her textbook.

“It’s not a date! We’re just catching up.”

“Sure.”

She spared a quick glance at Felix, who was nose-deep in his book, just like when they were kids. He had such sharp features, and upon reconsideration, his eyes looked even more beautiful than she remembered. Felix grew up just fine without her. Really fine, in fact.

It took Marinette a couple seconds to realize she was staring, and when she did, her head turned back to the front of the room so fast she swore she heard a snap.

This was... going to be complicated.

Hi Sarah! My friend and I are starting a bookclub (as much as you can with two people who aren't pressed for deadlines) and I was wondering if you have any recommendations? (That is if you have time to rec anything!) We're starting off with Deathless and have Fitzgerald next in line somewhere but I def want to try to expand the genres we read and tbh from years of following you, I trust your judgement

I don’t...like giving recommendations? At least not directly, it seems like too much opportunity for getting it wrong. Everybody has their own tastes, after all, and even the best of friends don’t necessarily vibe with what you vibe with. (I’ve experienced this with multiple friends, so I know what I’m talking about.) Truly, one of the reasons that my whole “I’m going to get back into reading for pleasure!” push has been so successful is that I only bother with books that interest me, and stop reading when they fail to catch my attention.

But I’ve now read at least 60 books in 2020, which is approximately 60 more than I’ve read in the years prior, so I’m happy to share that. Below is my list of recent reads, beginning to end, along with a very short review---I keep this list in the notes app on my phone, so they have to be. Where I’ve talked about a book in a post, I’ve tried to link to it.

Crazy Rich Asians series, Kevin Kwan (here)

Blackwater, Michael McDowell (here; pulpy horror and southern gothic in one novel; come for the monster but stay for the family drama.)

Fire and Hemlock, Diane Wynne Jones (here; weird and thoughtful, in ways I’m still thinking about)

The Secret History, Donna Tartt

Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn (here; loved it! I can see why people glommed onto it)

Swamplandia!, Karen Russell (unfinished, I could not get past the first paragraph; just....no.)

Rules of Scoundrels series, Sarah MacLean (an enjoyable romp through classic romancelandia, though if you read through 4 back to back you realize that MacLean really only writes 1 type of relationship and 1 type of sexual encounter, though I do appreciate insisting that the hero go down first.)

The Bear and the Nightingale, Katherine Arden (here)

Dread Nation, Justine Ireland (great, put it with Stealing Thunder in terms of fun YA fantasy that makes everything less white and Eurocentric)

The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson (VERY good. haunting good.)

Tell My Horse, Zora Neale Hurston (I read an interesting critique of Hurston that said she stripped a lot of the radicalism out of black stories - these might be an example, or counterexample. I haven't decided yet.)

The Rose MacGregor Drinking and Admiration Society, T. Kingfisher (fun!)

St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, Karen Russell (some of these short stories are wonderful; however, Swamplandia's inspiration is still unreadable, which is wild.)

17776, Jon Bois (made me cry. deeply human. A triumph of internet storytelling)

The Girl with All the Gifts, M. R. Carey (deeply enjoyable. the ending is a bittersweet kick in the teeth, and I really enjoyed the adults' relationships)

The Door in the Hedge and Other Stories, Robin McKinley (enjoyable, but never really resolved into anything.)

The Hero and the Crown, Robin McKinley (fun, but feels very early fantasy - or maybe I've just read too many of the subsequent knock-offs.)

Mrs. Caliban, Rachel Ingalls (weird little pulp novel.)

All Systems Red, Martha Wells (enjoyable, but I don't get the hype. won't be looking into the series unless opportunity arises.)

A People's History of Chicago, Kevin Coval (made me cry. bought a copy. am still thinking about it.)

The Sol Majestic, Ferrett Steinmetz (charming, a sf novel mostly about fine dining)

House in the Cerulean Sea, TJ Klune (immensely enjoyable read, for all it feels like fic with the serial numbers filed off)

The Au Pair, Emma Rous (not bad, but felt like it wanted to be more than it is)

The Night Tiger, Yangsze Choo (preferred this to Ghost Bride; I enjoy a well-crafted mystery novel and this delivered)

The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula Le Guin (unfinished, I cannot fucking get into Le Guin and should really stop trying)

The Ghost Bride, Yangsze Choo (enjoyable, but not nearly as fun as Ghost Bride - the romance felt very disjointed, and could have used another round of editing)

Temptation's Darling, Johanna Lindsey (pure, unadulterated id in a romance novel, complete with a girl dressing as a boy to avoid detection)

Social Creature, Tara Isabella Burton (a strange, dark psychological portrait; really made a mark even though I can't quite put my finger on why)

The Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins (slow at first, but picks up halfway through and builds nicely; a whiff of Gone Girl with the staggered perspectives building together)

Stealing Thunder, Alina Boyden (fun Tortall vibes, but set in Mughal India)

The Traitor Baru Cormorant; The Monster Baru Commorant, The Tyrant Baru Cormorant, Seth Dickinson (LOVE this, so much misery, terrible, ecstatic; more here)

This Is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar, Max Gladstone (epistolary love poetry, vicious and lovely; more here)

The Elementals, Michael McDowell

Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir (didn't like this one as much as I thought I would; narrator's contemporary voice was so jarring against the stylized world and action sequences read like the novelization for a video game; more here)

Finna, Nino Cipri (a fun little romp through interdimensional Ikea, if on the lighter side)

Magic for Liars, Sarah Gailey (engrossing, even if I could see every plot twist coming from a mile away)

Desdemona and the Deep, C. S. E. Cooney (enjoyed the weirdness & the fae bits, but very light fare)

A Blink of the Screen, Terry Pratchett (admittedly just read this for the Discworld bits)

A Memory Called Empire, Arkady Martine (not as good about politics and colonialism as Baru, but still a powerful book about The Empire, and EXTREMELY cool worldbuilding that manages to be wholly alien and yet never heavily expositional)

Blackfish City, Sam J. Miller (see my post)

Last Werewolf, Glen Duncan (didn't finish, got to to first explicit sex scene and couldn't get any further)

Prosper's Demon, KJ Parker (didn't work for me...felt like a short story that wanted to be fleshed out into a novel)

The Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett

His Majesty's Dragon, Naomi Novik (extremely fun, even for a reader who doesn't much like Napoleonic stories)

Three Parts Dead, Max Gladstone (fun romp - hard to believe that this is the same author as Time War though you can see glimmers of it in the imagery here)

A Scot in the Dark, Sarah MacLean (palette cleanser, she does write a good romance novel even it's basically the same romance novel over and over)

The Resurrectionist, E. B. Hudspeth (borrowed it on a whim one night, kept feeling like there was something I was supposed to /get/ about it, but never did - though I liked the Mutter Museum parallels)

Stories of Your Life and Others, Ted Chiang (he's a better ideas guy than a writer, though Hell Is The Absence of God made my skin prickle all over)

Gods of Jade and Shadow, Silvia Moreno-Garcia (fun, very much a throwback to my YA days of fairytale retellings, though obviously less European)

Four Roads Cross, Max Gladstone (it turns out I was a LOT more fond of Tara than I initially realized - plus this book had a good Pratchett-esque pacing and reliance on characterization)

Get in Trouble, Kelly Link (reading this after the Chiang was instructive - Link is such a better storyteller, better at prioritizing the human over the concept)

Gods Behaving Badly, Marie Phillips

Soulless; Changeless; Blameless, all by Gail Carriger (this series is basically a romance novel with some fantasy plot thrown in for fun; extremely charming and funny)

Black Leopard, Red Wolf, Marlon James (got about 1/3 of the way through and had to wave the white flag; will try again because I like the plot and the worldbuilding; the tone is just so hard to get through)

Pew, Catherine Lacey (a strange book, I'm still thinking about it; a good Southern book, though)

Nuremberg Diary, GM Gilbert (it took me two months to finish, and was worth it)

River of Teeth, Sarah Gailey (I wanted to like this one a lot more than I actually did; would have made a terrific movie but ultimately was not a great novel. Preferred Magic for Liars.)

Mexican Gothic, Silvia Moreno-Garcia (extremely fun, though more trippy than Gods and the plot didn't work as well for me - though it was very original)

The New Voices of Fantasy, Peter S. Beagle (collected anthology, with some favorites I've read before Ursula Vernon's "Jackalope Wives", "Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers" "The Husband Stitch"; others that were great new finds "Selkie Stories are for Losers" from Sofia Satamar and "A Kiss With Teeth" from Max Gladstone and "The Philosophers" from Adam Ehrlich Sachs)

This is a remake of my first ever work because I hated the sequel. You guys can read the old one if you like but it has a LOT of mistakes. This should be less chapters because I'm going to post two chapters merged as one each chapter, or not since I'm going to mash the sequel into this as well. Who knows. ___

To say that Alyssa was a fan of Miraculous Ladybug was an understatement but that didn't mean she wanted to one day wake up in the one year old body of Marinette Dupain-Cheng. She didn't know how she ended up here or how to get back so she did what she always did and adjusted.

It should have been easy but it seems that the universe is out to get her and she could of sworn that Gotham wasn't supposed to exist here.

AHHHHHH SNAP! Ya’ll Already Know What Time It Is. . .

That’s right. Another lengthy post no one asked for in which I both analyze and give thoughts on the recently released ML episode. . . This time it’s Miraculer (is in español castellano? Is that right? Idk I just know it’s the Spain Spanish and that Spanish LB just happens to be mi favorita!!! lol.)

Anywhoosies, let’s buzz right on!

So we continue to see Chloe STILL trying to get Ladybug’s attention so she can become Queen Bee. NOTE: She hasn’t been causing akumas this time around, instead she’s been waiting (not patiently but alas she’s not being as bad in that department).

So it seems that it wasn’t just Chat Noir but the whole Miraculous Team that came to terms that it’s best they cut Chloe out.

I do wanna point out the GROWTH in Chat Noir here. You guys recall the Chat Noir that acted out because he couldn’t know Ladybug’s secrets and wanted to know her identity but couldn’t?

Well, I’m proud of my boy now because here he mentions clear understanding that being a superhero requires you keep secrets, which is why he is FULLY on board with dropping Chloe out if it’s in the best interest to keep them all safe. S1 Chat Noir wasn’t that mature.

*head pat for Chat* he’s a good kitty, that one.

Next up after Ladybug decides to put it off for after school (I’m assuming the first battle took place during their 2 hour lunch break), we catch up with Gabriel and Natalie’s plans.

(Btw Nathalie, you sure seem VERY consumed by the plan than before. . .

Note: To me this hints that the previous holder also became addicted to the use of the damaged miraculous and landed herself in a coma. Not implying that Emílie was evil although it would make for good drama but it is an interesting observation . . That’s my theory for now.

We get to see just how Gabriel is working with Lila and it’s about as I expected it’d go. They secretly meet and Lila reports on the school’s happenings around Adrien to make it seem like Gabriel is looking out for his sins safety (I mean he kind of is. . but he truly isn’t :( ). Here she mentions Chloe’s “pathetic attempts” at trying to get Ladybugs attention which only confirms his plans are working. I’m still disgusted by Lila but what’s new, amiright?

Lunch breaks ends (I’m assuming) and Lila is dispatched to plant the seed of Hawkmoth’s plan. Adrien is still patient as ever and Marinette is an absolute GEM with her transparent feelings. I love it.

Enter The Queen

If you had any questions about how Chloe feels about Lila, here are your answers to those questions: Chloe doesn’t care who Lila is. She isn’t relevant to her. Boom lol.

The only reason she bothered with her is because Lila told her the “secret call that will DEFINETLY get Ladybug to show up every time. It always works when I do it.” Marinette tries to tell her to steer clear of Lila but of course she’s too riled about Ladybug avoiding her that she storms away. So now leaves the pending task of telling Chloe the bad news.

Ladybug finally tries to find the time to talk to Chloe right after school, but of course the “sentimonster” (I’m still not with the term. It’s weird but whatever, it’s the official translation I guess.) happens.

The Queen and Her Dedicated “Knight”

So in this part Chloe tries again to call Ladybug so she can be Queen Bee and to sum it up: Chloe shoos Sabrina to grab the costumes, it doesn’t work, she tries Lila’s method only to prove LB still doesn’t show. Chloe is hurt, Sabrina tried to confort her resulting in Chloe lashing out with “You’re not my best friend! Only Ladybug is my best friend! You’re NOTHING compared to her!”

Hawkmoth attempts to akumatize Chloe only to fail.

CONFIRMED ML LORE: Akuma’s can indeed be fought off. You just can’t let your negativity overcome you.

So then he tries for Sabrina and turns her into Miraculer

Side Note: Okay, I’m giving a personal headcanon and you can try to change my mind but it’s pretty solid right now.

Sabrina is IN LOVE with Chloe. She would do anything to make her happy and when Chloe is hurt, so is she.

Now if only Chloe realizes the amazing girl Sabrina is and cleans up her attitude, this friendship/relationship can be pure. Anyways, that’s that. Moving on.

I really like Sabrina’s akuma this time around. The design is nice, the powers proved to be quite dangerous. . . Sabrina is getting the power she deserves.

CONFIRMED ML LORE: The use of Cataclysm on another person won’t “Thanos” them. . . But it does severely weaken your body. (my take is that it slowly deteriorates your body from the inside like a disease would Black Plague from within, anyone?. Which is why Chat is so vulnerable after being hit with it.)

If you’ve ever wondered WHY we keep catching Alya and Nino on the bridge after school so often this season, here’s your answer:

THEY TRAIN IN THEIR SPARE TIME!!!!

omg they’re couple goals. I can’t even rn. Andre probably thinks they picked up parkour for fun or something lol.

The rest of the episode plays out as a normal fight and let me sum it up for you:

Ladybug rounds up the miraculous team while Chat Noir distracts Mayura and Miraculer, they get Chloe to work imo tricking Miraculer to return her powers, Mayura pulls a fast one and steals the Bee Miraculous, but Chat Noir is faster and takes it back. Queen Bee chases after Mayura only to be told “But if you join us, you could be Queen Bee for as long as you’d like.” Unfortunately for her, Queen Bee can’t be bought with bribery. Bb almost had her miraculous but Mayura slips out. The Dream Team helps LB contain Miraculer and Ladybug finally breaks the bad news to the Queen.

Ladybug: I’m afraid you can’t be Queen Bee anymore. Hawkmoth knows your real identity. It’s too dangerous.

Chloe was upset, but she still understands the consequences and gives her back “el prodigio”.

Chloe: I understand. But! I’m sure you’ll still need my help. I’m sure I’ll be Queen Bee again someday. I’ll always be Queen Bee. . .

Symbolism aside, Dream Team OUT and so leaves Sabrina and Chloe.

Sabrina: You won’t want to play with me anymore. . .

Chloe: Of course I still do. *stares down at picture* . . . But I just don’t want to be Ladybug anymore. Keep the costume if you want to.

The Queen is spreading her own wings. . .

More Gabnath future shenanigans are implied and Chloe confronts Lila for being a liar.

Lila: But when you tried it, she was there . . . wasn’t she?

Oh Lila you sly lil bi—

Chloe walks off not being able to counter that and Marinette mentions she hopes she didn’t hurt her, since she’s been trying really hard, but Tikki ends the episode with “Its for her own good. That way you can also keep her as well as Ladybug and Chat Noir safe as superheroes. It’s what being a hero is all about.”

To do what you can to keep everyone safe. . .

Conclusion: This was definitely one of the good episodes in the season. It gave us some answers to lore questions we’ve had in fandom, showed us Chloe is indeed slightly changing for the better, insight on Hawkmoth and Mayura working together, have Sabrina justice as an akuma, and ended with an important message about what being a hero is really about and the sacrifices it requires.

I saw 9.5 of 10 was a rating given by @gale-of-the-nomads for this episode on their review post, and I agree. It was a solid 9.5 and it’s a rating I would also rate it.

It was a very good episode. THIS is the kind of stuff I’d like to see. Clear development into something bigger (but alas, patience is freaking key with this show 😞)

I’ll end this post on this note:

This episode may or may not set us up for what we’ll see in the season finale (in regards to Hawkmoth trying to use the Bourgeois against Ladybug). He is clearly targeting Chloe, and now we officially know why.

Book Review: Jordi El Nino Polla: ¡Sabiduría poller!

Book of Wisdom. After reading this book written by the most popular male porn actor Jordi El Niño Polla I have to say yes, there are many words of wisdom. It is not exactly The Wisdom of Solomon or Book of Wisdom (about 200-50 BC.). Neither Jordi’s book is the world's highest literary product, not really. It mainly brings to mind some same type of stories published by young sportsmen or rock stars “how I became me and how I got to the top”. This is despite the fact that Jordi ENP’s career is in a porn industry, not in the world of sports. The reason for similarity comes from the style of writing. It’s full of positive young energy, charm, curiosity and ambition. There is no nastiness, dirtiness, gossiping details or other things like that. This book has been written by a well-bred guy from the neighborhood who which, though, happens to work in the porn industry.

Why on earth this review in English? The book itself is published only in Spanish. My Spanish is very poor but I used a scan-translate-application and it worked very well! (Although English is not my native language either as you can notice.) The book is available also in ebook version  which might be even easier to translate by application.

This is a very rare type of literature. Male porn performers have traditionally seen only as a brainless extensions of their only necessary tool: big and always hard penis. Size matters of course but that’s only one important factor. Christopher Zeischegg a.k.a. Danny Wylde released a collection of writings, Body to Job, in 2018. A memoir of an adult film career from beginning to end and a life lived after. Compaired to Danny’s book Jordi’s first written publication is easy and light to read. But it has its merits. When Danny’s book is full of stories about the dark side of the business, Jordi is telling us a young man's development story with a positive and curious attitude.

A curious attitude is where it all started. A young man couldn’t help himself of staying away from exciting world of porn. This sounds so familiar to me as well. Watching and wanking porn and dreaming how it would be there in front of and also behind the camera. Jordi tells vividly how nervous he was in the first two shootings and how he then got used to act in the shooting and learned not let the camera disturb anymore.

Jordi is no trying to provide too much his advices and opinions but he emphasizes one thing several times: Working in porn is a hard work. The shooting take hours, you must be able to get you “jorgito” hard many times, you need to work disciplined, follow the director’s and cameraman’s orders, respect the staff and to be patient. In the very end you are allowed to ejaculate. In fact it is like any other work: you got to go to your working place, you do your duty and then return to your home. Working in porn does really not mean that you fuck all around with everybody and join all the orgies between shootings. Not all. Between shooting days you do something else, spend time with your friends and family, go to a movie, just everyday life like anybody else. And rest because you need that after shooting days when you need to keep your cock erected again for hours.

Jordi has had a happy and safe childhood with a caring family. It is respectful that he tells that to the readers. So he doesn't come from a broken and poor family that pushed him on the wrong path of life, which eventually led to the porn industry.. No not at all. Being a porn performer is a decent career if you take care of yourself and your beloved. And he does. It was first difficult with parents when they realized what their son was doing. Nowadays they have if not fully accepted that, at least supporting and loving their son as always. Jordi writes in a beautiful way about his girlfriend Verónica – a shy and artistic girl from the same home Ciudad Real. “La Primera Dama Poller”. They seem to have a good, confident and mutually supportive relationship. What he is kindly asking is some privacy when going out with his friends. People can be thoughtless, asking to take selfies when he is just trying to have a dinner in a restaurant.

There are many tips for a novice porn actors. Some of them unnecessarily detailed like take a proper shower before shooting or like don’t forget take take with your test documents. But then again these details tell us about the everyday worklife in the sector – they are familiar for me as well. Jordi shows his gratitude to two “great stars”: Nacho Vidal and Rocco Siffredi. When he first time travelled to Rocco’s mansion and studios in Budapest it was Jordi’s first trip aboard and the first flight as well! By that time he had appeared already in over hundred scenes!  He says he has learned a lot about the porn shooting and industry from both Nacho and Rocco. I can believe it. But luckily not their style and genre. Even in gangbang scenes Jordi always stays respectful guy. Of course – Rocco’s way of acting is a porn fantasy – but unnecessarily crude. That’s not Jordi’s trademark and I’m quite sure it will never be.

He also tells us about how to become a youtuber. Interesting stories. I was a bit surprised that it is not that big source of income. The reason is the language. Spanish tube channel is not as gainful as in English – easy to believe. He has 3,7M subscribers but his earnings per month are (only) between 1000 and 7000 euros. First I couldn’t believe that but by the youtube statistics page confirms that. Jordi doesn’t tell us how much he earns from porn and how much Brazzers pays him. If I’ve understood right he is not allowed to tell that. But as a contract actor they usually have a fixed monthly payments including e.g. six scenes per month. In general it is surprising how low the compensation especially for male performers is – they have given not just their intimate parts but also their face to the industry forever.  

Jordi reminds everyone to think twice before starting a porn career. He has been successful. Not just because his big size “polla” but because of his positive attitude, high work ethic, modest nature and kindness. I met him briefly in bookstore in Madrid and got a signature from him to the book. No “Diva”, no proud nor arrogant, just very natural, shy, smiley and charming person who took his time, look at the eyes and was just like a good boy form the neighborhood.

A few days after the inauguration, I wandered into a nearby church and took a seat in the back pews. I’d gone there right after the election. There was some time for anyone with anything on their mind to stand up and speak. If you need others to pray for you, just let us know. A middle-aged black man in a leather jacket got up and began telling us about an argument he was having with a friend on Facebook. It was about the election, but it was actually about the intractability of racism. He was getting frustrated while describing it to us, in part because he seemed to value being the cool and level-headed one. Plus he was describing the kind of argument millions of people were having on the Internet. “I just hope he finds peace,” the guy said. He paused, then put his hands on his chest. “On a lighter note, today would have been Jimi Hendrix’s seventy-fourth birthday.” He opened up his leather jacket to show everyone his Hendrix t-shirt. “I just wanted to say that, because he was just awesome.” So I returned here, the day after marching through Manhattan with a poster that said “HOLD ON, BE STRONG.” I needed to be in a room that was powered by something other than hate--to be reminded of vision and purpose, even if they weren’t mine to claim. To listen to wisdom gleaned from a book I’ve never read, and pick and choose what I wanted. To hear others pour themselves into songs I never, ever sing along to. I wanted to steal their vibes.  Instead of a hymn, they passed out small pieces of paper with the lyrics of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” This is not the type of church people come to for the music. The pianist started playing, and I remember thinking about how it felt like magic when I learned how to play those chords as a kid. I couldn’t believe we were doing this. We sang, tentatively at first, as though we could not believe these words in this space. Picture it: singing of “no heaven” and “no religion, too,” with humility and hope, inside a house of worship. It was like an admission that faith was inadequate. All we had was one another. “Imagine” is a song I’ve heard millions of times, the type of song that is so ubiquitous that we rarely bother scrutinizing its words, its vantage point, the possibility that someone wrote these words because he actually believed them. 1. The Modern Lovers - “Roadrunner”

Can there be, can there ever be, a better hittin’ the road song than this? Not to me, not to us. “I’m in love with modern moonlight… I’m in love with the radio on” This song brings everything that makes rock so fundamentally exciting: the straightforward beat, electric guitars, electric keys, that sense of complete freedom with your gang in the backseat singing the chorus. 

2. Swell Maps - “Full Moon In My Pocket”

It pains me to admit that I cannot remember the name of the pasteup guy at the Rocket who used to tell me about the bands he loved, and that he thought I’d dig. I was so, SO into Pavement at the time, head over heels, and he did a great job of acquainting me with some of their precedents, handing off tape comps with songs from Young Marble Giants, Au Pairs, Swell Maps, and so much more. One of the tapes had this song, in two versions actually: this one, and an a cappella version, which sounds very poncey except it was the same take as this, bouncing with reverb and attitude. On our long drive from the woods to the city, a full moon hung in front of us like a carrot on a stick, and I started singing this song before I even realized it. Whatever the name of that super-awesome pasteup guy (Tom? I feel like it was Tom), I just want to tell him: I’m sorry, I’ve always been bad at remembering names, but I’ve never forgotten those tapes. Thank you.

3. Assa Cica - “Yokpo Wa Non Kpo Hami” 

When we were first getting into Beninese rock, it was Antoine Dougbé who pulled us down the rabbit hole. I figured we couldn’t be alone — his songs are the standouts on “Legends of Benin.” But there’s practically nothing to be found. I eventually found myself at Discogs, marveling at the sheer number of names that T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo went by and sifting through music looking for signs of Dougbé. I eventually found this album, and not just the voice but the whole style of the band convinced me that Assa-Cica was somehow another name Dougbé went by. After some discussion, Paige and I bought our first Beninese record. In the weeks that it took to arrive, we learned a lot more about Dougbé, including the fact that he’s not actually the singer on those songs! But also I don’t think Assa-Cica is the singer on this song either! We did turn out to love every song on this record, but this one is my personal favorite, just a barnburner with disco roots. Every time I listen to it I try to imagine the cultural and personal forces that brought it into being, and it only gets more absorbing.

4. Eko Roosevelt - “Me To A De Try My Own”

T.P. Orchestre research also brought me to an album they did with Betti-Betti (or Beti-Beti), a Cameroonian singer whose tracks eventually led to Eko Roosevelt. I don’t get down with all of the music of his that I’ve heard, but this one just brings a smile to my face every time. I love the patois he sings in, where recognizable words rise suddenly out of the bubbling disco bass and the good-natured horn sections. I would never have guessed that hunting for African voodoo funk would eventually reveal a path to appreciating disco… but I’m glad that it has. I mean, I spent whole years of my life thinking that horns had no place in rock music, so what the hell do I know? 

5. Jacqueline Taïeb - “Le coeur au bout des doigts”

6. T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo - “Non Gbeto Do Mahu Tche”

This 7” is from that rich early period of T.P. Orchestre (this one is I think from ’72) where the arrangements are hand-drum heavy but the organ and guitar are funk. The vocal is — I don’t know what it is, it’s a genre I hadn’t heard until I heard this band in this period. 

7. Los Wembler’s de Iquitos - “Llanto en la Selva”

8.  Iggy Pop “The Passenger”*

I’ve always thought this was one of Iggy Pop’s finest outside of his work with Stooges. I think I also always liked it because I am most often the passenger. I really really don’t like driving. I really avoid it. I have a driver’s license but boy do I not like to use it. There aren’t really a lot of songs about riding in the passenger seat that are positive or cool that I can think of besides this one and Art Brut’s “I Love Public Transportation”.

This album also makes me think of Shena’s old place on Damen Ave. in Wicker Park Chicago. This record and of course Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”.

9. Jacques Dutronc - “Les Gens Sont Flous”

The things that gets me about the song are: that single bass note that plunges every time in the verse, the shaker in the chorus, and that freakin triangle hit that happens on the coolest possible beat throughout the entire song. I fully intend to lift that idea into another song if I can find the right spot for it.

10. Jimi Hendrix - “Third Stone From The Sun”

This goes down as one of the greatest rock recordings in history. Every time I swoon at the guitar phrases, the bass line, the drums, the weird low chaos of his slowed down vocals. Truly a masterpiece, capped off by the final minute of beautiful noise that sounds like planets in motion.

11. Björk Gu∂mundsdóttir and tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar - Gling-Gló - “Bella Simamaer”

12. Ayalew Mesfin - “Gedawo (The Hero)”

The first 20 seconds of this song are crucial, because it establishes the 4/4 rhythm that’s coursing under the 3/4 handclap. That is such a killer rhythmic feel I can hardly stand it. I only wish they’d pull out the handclap in the middle, just for a handful of measures, and then bring em in again. Meanwhile, Mesfin’s vocal approach is so intense! 

Entr’Acte - “Phantom of the Opera Entr’Acte”*

We figured we needed an Entr’Acte to denote the change in vibe from trying to stay alert and amped on the turnpike to being back home in Brooklyn. Half of this broadcast was made in the front seat of the van on our drive back to NY after our recent visit to the Midwest where we stayed in the woods the majority of the time with a couple of runs to St. Louis to pick up Banh Mi So and tofu Laap. 

Evan and I have this thing we call “Disney Reptile Brain” but before that I should explain, Evan and I have this other thing we call “different high schools.” We have an age difference that we mostly don’t notice but every now and then there will be some cultural touchstone and one of us is like “What!? You don’t remember that!?” and we’re like “Ahh, different high schools!” So something like, the year 1994, Evan might remember it as when Kurt Cobain died, and I’ll remember it as the year “The Lion King” came out.

So, Evan missed all the of the major releases by Disney from that time – Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, etc. – and thus he can see how ridiculously bad these remakes are in a way that I can’t. He says that you have to “Disney Reptile brain” to fully see the movie, that you have to have the animated version playing in your mind’s eye at the same time you're watching these “live action” remakes or they don’t make any sense. And it’s true, for me and lots of other people I know born between 1984 and 1990 we experience this when watching these films, like you already know it so well and know what’s going to happen it’s more like some sort of ritual, incantation, or reenactment of a feeling.

So, that’s Disney Reptile Brain. And if you’re like, wait, but this is Phantom of the Opera and that’s not Disney. You’re right, but it turns out Reptile Brain is a thing that can happen with musicals and ALW stuff is perfect for it. (Evita! Evita!) I am helpless when I hear this music which I got into around the same time that I was devouring Disney VHS, even though I hear it now and it’s SO. SILLY. But when I hear this melody, I’m like right there, on the boat with Christine and the Phantom. I’m like a cat picked up by the scruff and I’m just completely engrossed and I can’t unlearn that feeling. If you’ve seen Phantom at all recently, it is straight up hilarious kid stuff, like how it starts with an auction of lot #666, and the phantom is like this super moody broody guy who writes passive aggressive notes to everyone. I now can hear it as so funny and so square, but what you’re hearing on this track is my reptile brain in full effect.

14. Sunny Blacks Band - “Holonon Die”

Ha! I said plenty about this song on air. Suffice it to say I’ve been getting obsessed with Meloclém and his performances. It’s really hard to find out anything about him, so this early track makes me really happy. I think this is sung in Fon.

15. Yo La Tengo - “False Alarm”

Alongside “Third Stone from the Sun,” another of my all-time favorite recordings ever. Yo La Tengo was a key protein in learning about rock music, starting with the album  “Painful” and hitting a peak not just on this album but specifically this song. Alongside a vivid memory of Sean N., I helplessly air-keyboard to it, air-drum to it, dance my face off. By that final phrase I’m all worn out.

16. Meas Samon & So Savoeun - Hits Collection

We don’t really know anything about this song, including its title. It’s from a cassette called “Hits Collection.” We know Meas Samon from other sources, but I have no idea what they’re talking about and what is happening in this song, though I will say the tape warping on the entire fabric of the track is absolutely delicious.

17. Syna So Pro - “Fengyang Song”

I feel so proud of Syna So Pro and St. Louis introducing this track. The first time we saw her perform this song was live at El Leñador, and it was a knockout. She (they?) used a looping pedal situation to build this huge harmonic structure in real time. I believe she may be studying Chinese, but I know she’s studying Chinese music. There’s this and one other amazing Chinese song in addition to her many songs in English on her album “Vox.”

18. Fela Kuti - “Open & Close”

I would listen to this whole song just for the Tony Allen solo in the early middle — but I also love how the song is so long that even a solo as particular as that one gets swallowed back up into the totality of the track (though he has many amazing passages throughout). The emotional equilibrium of the horns is cautiously optimistic. And I find myself thinking about the passage that goes “Let me tell you a story: open and close,” and how “open and close” is a narrative in action right there in three words. What was open has closed. It’s clearly a big change, a serious shift. Once open, now closed. Why? What changes as a result? Did anyone get hurt in the closing?

19. France Gall - “Celui Que J’aime”*

In the theme of “songs that got away” (see “Muxima”) this is one that I was thrilled to find again! I heard it on Jeff Hess’s show on KDHX many years ago. It set me on a France Gall odyssey. I bought albums and collections, and none of them had this song. I think her tone is probably my favorite female vocal tone, and she’s also one of my favorite singers in her delivery. This one is very different than some of the other stuff I associate with her but I think it’s still my favorite of hers.

20. Ely - “As Turbinas Estao Ligadas”

Now Again Records put out a collection called “Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas” and it’s got as much tone as the title boasts. Credit due to “vinyl archaeologist” Joel Stones for tracking down songs like these and putting them within reach. This is one among several favorites and a true hit.

21. Tulia - “Pali się (Fire of Love)”

Speaking of true hits: welcome to the world of EuroVision, where music is a medium for international competition. This song is Poland’s entry for 2019. We spent an amazing week with our friends Phil and Archie driving between Cambridgeshire and London singing along with all of the finalists of that year’s competition. It’s a fascinating idea, this vote-based international struggle turning into a final victor that somehow expresses the zeitgeist of ALL OF THOSE COUNTRIES TOGETHER — because it’s not just Europe, it’s Israel and Australia. Also amazing is that this isn’t just some scheme cooked up in the reality TV era: this has been going on for decades. In fact, France Gall was the EuroVision winner in 1965 — for Luxembourg!

22. Luigi Tenco - “Ciao Amore Ciao”

Likewise, this song was in international competition. It was sung by Egyptian-born French superstar Dalida. We saw an eponymous movie about her at the St. Louis International Film Festival in 2017 and she was a completely engrossing character. I’m not totally sold on this song as she sings it — but I love Luigi Tenco’s version. And man what a looker! He died young by his own hand, and she died too young by her own hand, and that is about as French as it gets.

23. Marijata - “I Walk Alone”

“This Is Marijata” is the sound of Ghana in 1976. I was talking about Marijata with Josh Weinstein recently, and he reminded me of this song and how much I dig it. It’s got that slow burn organ in the background, the slightly clumsy percussion in the foreground, those freighted vocals — but when it gets to the chorus, as the organ hook gives way to the horn hook, that’s when it truly hits its stride. And by the time we disappear into the fadeout, it has become fully epic. 

24. Lijadu Sisters - “Life’s Gone Down Low” 

To my ears it really feels like this song could have been released this year, rather than in 1976. What the hell was going on in West Africa that year? I feel like we could put together a great mix of songs just from that single year from Nigeria, Ghana, Benin and Ivory Coast. The Lijadu Sisters (Taiwo and Kehinde, actual identical twins) put out their first album in 1969; by their third album, “Danger,” the source of this song, they were huge stars in Nigeria and played with Ginger Baker, Art Blakey, and so on. They eventually moved to Harlem and lived together their whole lives, until Kehinde passed a little less than a year ago. 

25. Os Kiezos - “Muxima”*

As mentioned, I heard this song in a video work by Alfredo Jaar at the Art Institute of Chicago. You can read about the piece here. I learned that “Muxima” is an Angolan folk song and in the video of the same title there are, I believe, 5 different versions of the song. One particular one – the one that pulled me into the room where the video was playing on loop – was a gorgeous vocal arrangement.  I even tried shazaming it. No dice. So I wrote it down and started looking for the song, the particular arrangement. I bought a collection of Angolan music because I saw the song on it. That’s the one you heard on this broadcast and it is a recording that I now really love. I periodically keep looking for other versions of the song, hoping I’ll come across that missing version though. I thought I got close this week when I found Duo Ouro Negro’s version. (Worth checking out!) That one from the video though, still haunts me! It’s been 9 years now, I wonder if I would recognize it but I think I would. I guess the next thing I can try is a shot in the dark email to Alfredo Jaar. This is and one other song share the top spot of “songs that got away” the other one is some beautiful song that was coming from a small radio from a group of old Puerto Rican guys who were playing cards on the sidewalk on South 3rd street in Williamsburg. We were touring through and staying with our friend in that neighborhood and as we were moving the van I heard this beautiful song coming off the sidewalk. Those guys had great taste.

Can someone explain Tower of David to me? How did B end up shot in Venezuela? What is that tower? Who are those guys that save him and why? Is that heroin they give him for the pain? And why do they keep pushing it? And who is that creepy doctor (do I detect a hint of pedophilia?) Is it weird that B always ends up teaching English to someone when he's held hostage? Sorry for all the questions.. S3 left me scratching my head the 1st time and apparently still does.

After Brody left the States via Canada he travelled south, probably by sea, and somehow Saul tracked him down. We don’t know when and where that happened, we don’t even know for sure if it happened before Brody arrived in Venezuela, but it’s clear that the gang leader at the Tower of David is one of Saul’s contacts, hence Saul knows where to find Brody when it suits him.

It is notable that El Niño, the leader at Tower of David, knows Carrie as well.

The Tower of David is an actual place. It was a real life half-built skyscraper in downtown Caracas, and was home to thousands of squatters who transformed the abandoned block into a vertical slum complete with grocery shops, tattoo parlours, internet cafes, and a hair salon.

Not exactly a touristy sightseeing spot either. The original Tower of David was overcrowded with people - a city within a city.

Built in the mid-1990s by the Venezuelan tycoon David Brillembourg to serve as the headquarters of his bank, the high-rise was left unfinished after a banking crisis left the country’s economy in tatters. The tower was first occupied by squatters in 2007, and eventually became home to more than 1,200 families. What began as a tent camp grew over the years into a thriving, highly regulated community under the rigid management of a born-again ex-convict who had served time in prison, Alexander “el Niño” Daza.

In “Homeland,” Brody is made a guest and a prisoner of El Niño, who finds a doctor to heal his wounds and assigns a girl to watch over him.

In real life, inhabitants in the surrounding neighbourhoods of the Tower of David complained that the tower provided a safe haven for gangsters and other criminals, and at least one high-profile kidnap victim was rumoured to have been held in the building.

Remember, these were the days when Homeland was not obsessed about prescience but were happy to tell a great spy story with more or less plausible character development, using interesting bits and pieces from the real world to build a story around it.

The tower was closed down by authorities in July 2014, and its inhabitants were relocated to a place more than an hour away from the city centre.

Homeland did not film these sequences in Caracas though, but in Puerto Rico - both Brody’s scenes and Quinn’s opening sequence in 3.01. The fact that Quinn starts S3 in Caracas always made me wonder whether he knew about Brody’s whereabouts.

For your other questions I went back into some old reviews, and this one here from The Guardian sums it up accurately: 

“Brody is in Venezuela, having been shot on the Colombian border. Dellum, a man who sounds like Kevin Spacey and reminds me of a Buffy villain, gets the bullets out of his belly and gives him a nice dose of heroin. I have no idea why he spends the episode imparting dubious world-weary wisdom; it’s a horrible, hammy role.There’s a $10m reward on Brody’s head, and it doesn’t matter if he turns up dead or alive. It’s not clear why (or really, if) El Nino is protecting him. El Nino knows Carrie Mathison. So does Brody. That’s as much as we get. There’s obviously something more to it: El Nino kills a man for stealing his possessions, and kills policemen, an imam and his wife for shopping Brody to the police after he escapes. He doesn’t want the bounty, so what does he want? And who does he work for?”

The heroin was pain treatment, it made Brody even more dependent on him. El Niño worked mostly for himself, but didn’t mind doing Saul a favour - for payment - when he claims Brody back.

That episode drew a lot of similarities between Brody and Carrie - both imprisoned and unable to escape - and laid ground for why Brody had no other choice than to take the offer and go into Iran - as if being the country’s most sought after terrorist wasn’t yet enough, add some heroin addiction miraculously cured in days.

As cringe worthy as this episode was back then, in hindsight I’ve come to admire what Homeland did here: Dedicating an hour of screen time to tell a story instead of just skimming through some more or less loosely tied scenes while trying to mirror real life events faster than they actually happen.
