November: Loss & Life
From the cooling weather to the turning colors of the leaves, Autumn is a time of transformation and reflection. Of mourning and celebration. It's a bittersweet season; the falling leaves remind us that in the sorrow loss, there is also great beauty in letting go.
Accordingly, the All Valley Skills Challenge theme for November is:
Tumblr media
Below, you will find this month's prompts. Our mods have created a series of moodboards, each inspired by a Festival of the Dead from a culture represented in the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai universe. We've also included a short description of the unique traditions of each:
(Moodboards by @idontknowkaratebutiknowcrazy, @desolateice and @wicked-jade.)
Tumblr media
Dia de los Difuntos - Ecuador Celebrated on November the 2nd, and coinciding with All Souls Day, Ecuador's Dia de los Difuntos (Day of the Deceased) is a holiday that combines Catholic tradition with the death rituals of the indigenous Quechua people. On this day, families gather to honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed away. Traditionally, they visit cemeteries to clean graves and to bring gifts of flowers and food to share with those they've lost. The belief is that the food will help give souls strength for their journey to the afterlife. Stalls selling guaguas de pan (bread babies - a sweet bread piped with colorful icing, shaped to resemble a doll or baby) and colada morada (a thick, dark purple corn drink, served hot) line the streets, along with vendors selling other treats and grave decorations. In rural areas, it is common for families to dress in their finest clothes and share a picnic together in the cemetery. The festivities also often include carnivals and parades.
Tumblr media
Kyu-Bon (Obon) - Okinawa/Japan The Obon Festival, also called Kyu-Bon in Okinawa, is celebrated throughout both Okinawa and Japan. While the holiday is based on the solar calendar in mainland Japan, in Okinawa, it follows the lunar calendar. This means it can fall anywhere from mid-July to early September. Always starting on a Monday, the celebration lasts for three days. It is customary for Okinawans from all over to Japan to return to their hometowns, in order to observe the holiday with their families. On the first day (Unke), families hang glowing lanterns outside and leave their doors and windows open, to guide and welcome the spirits of their ancestors home. They also leave offerings such as sugarcane sticks and uchikabi paper (money for the afterlife) on the family altar. On the second day (Nakanuhi), families prepare food, visit other relatives homes, and exchange gifts. The final day (Ukui), is a time for feasting, celebrating, and sharing stories. Prayers and goodbyes are said before sending the spirits back to the afterlife. Food, handwritten notes, and uchikabi paper are placed in a large bowl as a gift for the ancestors. The contents are then burned, so the spirits can take the offerings with them when they go. Over the course of the festival, colorfully clad Eisa dancers march through the streets, entertaining both the crowds and the spirits by dancing, chanting, drumming, and playing folk songs on the sanshin.
Tumblr media
Chuseok - South Korea Celebrated on the full moon of the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar for about a 3 day holiday. People return home bearing gifts, visit and clean grave sites, and share a feast. Parts of these feasts include songpyeon (a type of colorful rice cake), types of Hangwa like the honey cookie yakgwa, fruit, baekju (a type of alcohol), jeon (savory pancakes), japchae, bulgogi and more. Food will also be set out at a in-home memorial for the ancestors and those who've passed. Games are played like Yut Nori, as well as sports like Ssireum (a type of wrestling), and Taekkyon (a type of martial arts). There is also a dance, Ganggangsullae.
Tumblr media
All Souls Day (Il Giorno Dei Morti) - Italy Also coinciding with All Souls Day, Il Giorno Dei Morti is the Italian Day of the Dead. While November 1st (All Saints Day) is the day to honor the Catholic saints, November 2nd is reserved for honoring dearly departed loved ones. On this day, families flock to cemeteries in order to pay their respects to the dead by lighting candles and laying flowers - customarily, bouquets of chrysanthemums - on their graves. In Sicily and other parts of southern Italy, parents will hide small gifts, such as toys, sweets and Pupi ri Zuccaru (sugar puppets) around the house for their children to find. The children are then told that the gifts were left for them by their deceased relatives, who came to visit them in the night. Traditional foods vary from region to region. Pan dei morti (bread of the dead) is consumed in almost every part of the country. Other treats include Frutta di Martorana (marzipan sweets from Sicily), and Ossa dei morti (bones of the dead - crunchy, almond-flavored cookies that are shaped to resemble bones.)
You will have one month from today to create and submit fanworks inspired by this theme. This is your chance to show off your creative skills, whatever they may be. From writing, to art, to everything in between. Our goal is to encourage all forms of creative expression within the TKK/CK community. All pairings and ratings are welcome.
This round will officially close on Monday, November 30th at noon, CST, so if you would like for us to share your works, make sure to submit them before the deadline. Tag us @allvalleyskillschallenge and #allvalleyskillschallenge, to make it easier for our mods to find and reblog your works!
We’ve also created an AVSC Collection on ao3, if you would like to add your works there. We highly recommend that artists who wish to share uncensored, NSFW content do so on ao3, to avoid violating tumblr’s guidelines.
Please check out our FAQ for more details. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us at @allvalleyskillschallenge, our asks are open.

Happy 추석/Chuseok!
추석 also known as 가위, is Koreas autumn harvest festival, similar to thanksgiving or other such celebrations. It's celebrated in both North and South Korea and lands on the 15/8 on the lunar calendar so it changes each year, but for this year it starts on September 28 and goes on until the 30th. Uniquely 추석 guarantees 3 days off; the day before, 추석 day, and day after.
Tumblr media
Where Does Chuseok Come From?
Chuseok is an age old celebration so when it originated is a bit debated. Some think it comes from around 57 BC - 935 AD as a part of another celebration called gabae. Gabae was a month-long weaving contest between two teams and when the competition was over the winner would be treated to a feast from the losing team.
Other think that it is tied to celebrations for the harvest moon where people would offer deities and ancestors new harvests. Which means chuseok could have started off as a worship ritual.
Whichever the origins or history, 추석 has developed to be a big family event in Korea, with a lot of specific foods and events going on. The event celebrates family, food, and the large harvest before winter starts to come in.
Some common holiday foods are:
Yakgwa 약과
Jeon 전
Saengseon Twigim
Hangwa 한과
Songpyeon 송편
Before there was more of a culture to make 송편 with family and go all out; doughs would be died naturally and made into unique shapes. There was even a common saying that said: “송편을 잘 빚으면 예쁜 딸을 낳는다” or in English: “If you shape 송편 well, you’ll have a pretty daughter”.
What are the traditions of Chuseok?
Visiting with Offerings Ancestors Graves:
추석 is all about family, both alive and past. Koreans usually hold a memorial service, or charye (차례), in honor of their ancestors and offer certain foods to them such as rice and fruits. Which additional food is offered changes a bit depending on region though, in Seoul salted fish and meat dishes are offered along with rice for instance.
When giving appreciation to ancestors Koreans also go to the family grave plot and sweep and clean the area. Then, they bow to their ancestors graves as a whole family which is called sungmyo (성묘).
Giving Gifts on Chuseok
People also need to celebrate their live family! 추석 gift sets are common to find around in Korea before the holiday begins in stores and supermarkets. Many gifts are very food and health focused; from having fruit, alcohol, and meat, to ginseng products, health products, and others.
Interestingly though; the fruit gifts are pretty pricey and filled with premium fresh fruits. So don't mistake them for the fruits you normally get at the grocery store. Quality Beef is also an expensive gift to give that people really love.

Note
(for ezreal) There is a rare quiet in the longue for once, and Aphelios' entrance without much fanfare makes it seem like he appeared out of thin air. He falls into the cushion next to Ezreal on the couch, and after a beat reveals the most valuable of treasures; sugary treats from Alune. The plastic bag is opened tantalisingly slowly, and a single hangwa is delicately lifted precariously between finger and thumb, and after giving it a sniff, a quiet, content hum reverbs from his throat. And only then, does Aphelios finally look over at his bandmate.
/ @aphellos heartsteel verse
from music is his attention grabbed, quiet humming dying into a strangled noise of surprise at the sudden shift of weight in the plush couch of their lounge. ezreal stares, wide-eyed behind rose tinted sunglasses perched at sloping tip of his nose before he falls back with a short laugh. “ don't scare me like that, aphelios. i thought you were yone for a second, coming to get on my ass about not dusting stuff down right. ”
no audible answer, of course, but not even a glance of acknowledgement. brows furrow, headphones pulled down to hang loosely about his neck, gaze searching for an answer. found in crinkling bag, of course, the visual alone enough to find his mouth watering. newly acquired is his adoration for this long-overlooked side of his background, never quite having been given an opportunity to grow acquainted with things like language or even foods until recent developments.
a regret cutting deep, of course, because he loves all of it. a lot. especially the brightly colored yugwa held between slender fingers, a quiet taunt. the puppy dog eyes are turned on, hands planted firmly next to aphelios' thigh and torso drawing in close ... “ wow, phel. did alune buy those for you ? sure looks good ... hey, did i ever tell you how handsome you are when you style your hair that way ? ” glossy lips pouted, cuteness turned to a ten, he is a picture perfect example of shameless begging. / @aphellos

01 / @lgcharu
he's only seven when his hands turn blue for the first time. cheeks and nose a bright red from the seoul winter—a far cry from los angeles's unchanging sun—he juts his arms out before his parents, close to tears, and asks: why am i blue?
it's because he's bad with the cold. his parents call it peripheral cyanosis, and he's expected to remember that, so he does. it's nothing serious, is what his mom tells him, clasping her hands, hearth to snow, over his. you just need to stay warm.
(kim yubin remembers things methodically and efficiently. he compartmentalizes this memory not as a whole, but in distinct pieces. the first: the color blue. the second: the diagnosis. and the third: his mother's voice, gentle but firm, comfort disguised as reprimand, reminding him that a boy like him needs warmth.)
as if on cue, he shivers.
he thinks about the color blue, the diagnosis a kid barely seven shouldn't be expected to remember. when his mother first tells him he needs to stay warm, he hears it as a promise. her hands are heavy over his, after all, and as a child, that feels like permanence. he's hardly the wizened old soul he pretends to be, but he's just old enough and just wise enough to parse through the real lesson she was trying to teach.
that, just like everything else, only ever boiled to one addendum, after all: if he needs anything, it's up to him to find it.
so, he tries. steely-eyed and not without reservations, in a city only vaguely familiar to him, yubin tries to stay as warm as someone like him possibly could. sometimes, he comes close. some days, closer than others.
he shivers again. he's cold—there's never an in-between in seoul's breeziest department stores, after all—but his hands aren't blue, and truthfully speaking, the prospect of not being alone in a city he's still trying to figure out on chuseok leaves him toasty enough.
"d'you think your parents would prefer a hangwa gift set or one of those suuuuper legit ones with, like, fifty cans of spam?" yubin turns to gaze at haru expectantly. there's a twinkle in his eyes, and the way his grin stretches is mirthful. "i can't go empty-handed. i mean, it's chuseok."
truthfully, yubin has never been one for holidays—a habit taught implicitly by his parents—but he means it. he can't go empty-handed; it'd only be fair to return the warmth he's been given.

CTS B | Compulstory Question 1
Tumblr media
As a group we came up with some to manifest that CTS-B would benefit us in our criticality. We talked about the importance of communication skills, self awareness and self trust. All the points discussed have valid points that they are skills to help us to be a more professional designer and a better person.
Tumblr media
However after class I realised that I didn’t fully understand the task during the activity; therefore I created a page of my personal manifesto. My new manifesto does not only talk about my artistic identity and boosting up the quality of my academic performances yet it focuses on my personal identity as a nineteen-year-old student; declaring to be more critical as a person and to be wise in most decisions of life.
One of the aspects of CTS B that were particularly significant for me is that I can use the classes and activities as a self-reflection time where I get to constantly check up on myself and my direction in life. Topics of week 6 - Critical Self-Reflectivity and week 10 - Statement of Artistic Vision stood out the most to me as I could critically oversee my progression and where I am heading to, what would be needed and necessary.
One of my favourite manifesto is; understanding the connection with my practice with the society will bring authenticity and colour into my artistic identity.
Connecting this with Materiality and Techniques, learning different techniques of crafting such as; weaving, knotting or embossing, helped me to bring a closer connection with my own culture. Ironically, the last few classes have been a chance for me to dive deep into research on Korean clothings and culinary culture, investigating actual techniques that have been used in our history to present things in an authentic way. It is interesting how I gain more knowledge about my own background heritage through classes like these.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Semester 1 Term 2, we were assigned to create a 16 page zine that relates our memories or culture to one of the three techniques taught. In response to this assignment, I have been working on creating a mini dictionary of Korean traditional desserts. I specifically chose this topic as I felt the most comfortable to deliver the information and build a relation to myself.
Maybe this is why many artists get inspired by their own local traditions, because they have the most understanding of the story of their culture, and that’s what makes them themselves. It’s personal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Making a list of manifestoes is crucial and useful as it helps me have a deeper understanding of my own identity and to reflect on my values. It provides a moment to plan my future and set my goals, as well as the tone of voice of manifesting itself feeds me with confidence and faith that it will happen.

Data: 16/09 (segunda-feira), 17/09 (terça-feira) e 18/09 (quarta-feira). Horário: das 10h00 às 20h30. Local: Ágora - Praça Central (apresentações), Assembleia (Chaerya), Ruas de Gangnam (barracas e desfile). Dresscode: Hanbok, roupa tradicional coreana.
