Anyone else enjoy thrifting and thrift shopping?
It's one of my favorite ways of keeping stuff out of the garbage heap.
And Sometimes you just need something. Sometimes, it might be cheap pants, shirts, "new" cookware or eating utensils, ridiculous decorative stuff. A ton can be found through thrifting and i don't necessarily have to feel guilty in buying some stuff I might not have gotten otherwise (or needed). Mostly because while it's already had 1 life, why not another while it's still functional and keep it out of the dump longer? 🌱💚 🌱 no need for new for everything if it's already made and here :)
I haven't been able to for a long time as I like to carpool or have donations to bring with, was able to recently go with some friends and wanted to share some of the neat buys I found.
I don't usually get lucky with pretty homemade quilts being available when thrifting, but I found this one and am pretty excited about it, (this was my top find this time)
To me, it looks hand stitched entirely, there's a few small tears that will need minimal repair and a few spots that will need some reinforcement as theres a bit of thinning. Otherwise it's quite beautiful and I know it must have taken the maker a bit of time to do. Also i must admit, im kind of inspired to get my hands back to quilting again soon from this beauty.
A sweet deal on this embroidery floss and tool(?)
To be quite honest I'm not really sure what the tool being pointed at is, if anyone knows please share your knowledge! I'll likely use the floss on some hat projects for gifts this year.
Also, I found a bag with all these bobbins and thread. I've been looking for more bobbin containers cause I like to have a full one for the common colors I use when I'm sewing. These colors I'll probably use for binding smaller quilts (dog, cat, baby, and lap quilt sized) or for attempts at making clothing if fabrics are similar colored.
I also found
A set of ceramic measuring cups with handles,
kitchen knife,
2 crocheted blankets, lap/single sized,
2 nice new picture frames (still wrapped),
A book (fun reading material),
And what I thought was a ceramic pancake 🥞 or tortilla holder/warmer for breakfast, but I think it is actually for something else? I'm using it to store fresh ginger tubers at the moment (later, mayby garlic bulbs)
I was hoping for some nice fabric to try my hands at skirt making and some interesting quilting fabric, but nothing in the selection really caught my eye this round. Lots of pretty kitchen ware and nicknacks, though. Unfortunately, there no time to even look at the clothes before we had to head off, no big loss though.
That's it for now,
🌱🌻Happy Homesteading and sustainability efforts!🌻🌱

I have slowly been working on my cheese quilt...I mean honeycomb quilt. I have all the partial honeycombs for the top, bottom, sides, and corners all completed.
I included my pattern so you can see what my end goal is. Now I have to work on the full hexagons. I already shared one, and I need 59 total. My hexies look a lot less like neatly sorted cheese now. I have them in baggies for each hexagon, so that I have the right number of them for each block.
Here are some close-ups of some of my finished pieces.

Another English paper pieced quilt block for the Pile!
I’m by no means an expert, but I’m wondering… should I post a little video on how I’m putting these together? Maybe I’ll go work on it now 😅

Found out you can make a simple quilt out of hexagons? And the hexagons are so easy to make you don't actually have to think about it? So it's an easy, repetitive task that's also just meticulous enough to keep me engaged without being stressful? New side project Unlocked 🔓 😎

now that the weather is turning cold my little creature brain is running around shrieking about sweaters. knitting and crocheting sweaters. need them. must burrow into them. meanwhile, all my projects in progress --
#crafting shenanigans#knitting#crocheting#crochet#i'm not actually going to start anything#bc i legitimately have things i need to finish#a bunch of small pieces cut out for a mini quilt#a blanket i have a deadline for#and i'm so close to finishing my first handsewn sweater#but i also do have a knitting pattern picked out already#i've never gotten knitting to click in my brain and i think the issue might be that i've never given myself permission to just jump into it#instead of doing basic projects that i'm not excited about#and the pattern is basically two rectangles and two trapezoids#which i can do!!#but i'm putting it off until i have fewer projects#end spiel

(I have 4 quilts and a shirt in progress and am also wanting to add pockets to my dresses and it could have become overwhelming but I have no deadline on any of this so I'm planning a 5th quilt.)
#one quilt and the shirt are only handstitched#two quilt tops will be part handsewn#there will be SO MUCH ironing#i love sewing but gosh it's so puch planning and cutting and fussing and ironing and unstitching the errors#a quilt is 20% sewing at best#also quilting is kind of a nightmare but manages to be soothing at the same time#still i'll need a quilting frame of some sort at some point#parenthèse

update with the finished quilt! it makes me so happy whenever i come back to my room, and is doing a great job at keeping me warm these fall nights.
finished piecing my first quilt and dropped it off to be quilted today!
the act of creating this has been so rewarding. i’ve learned a lot, and i treasure every moment of hand sewing squares with my mum while listening to a spooky podcast.
overall, i’m very proud with how the top turned out and i cannot wait to see it done and to be able to use it!

Back to basting...
Since I am starting to get multiple blocks of my yellow hexagons pieces together, I need to get my black hexies basted. Then I can start putting this quilt together.

Hello!
This is a blog about crafts. It is also a blog about writing about crafts. I don't know if this is particularly Tumblr, but Tumblr is what I know and so here we are!
The crafts will be mostly textile based because that is what my little fingers are absolutely obsessed with. I don't know, there's something about cloth and thread and yarn and colour the endless combinations of these that really, really just scratches the creative itch and makes me feel like me.
In no particular order, I knit, spin, dye, crochet, sew, embroider, quilt, and have dabbled in lacemaking. I don't have nearly as much time as I would like to do these now that I have a full time and pretty exhausting job, but you know what? When I do, I can document some of it on here and share the joy of craft a little. I also have enjoyed writing on and off throughout my life and it would be nice to practice that a little.
The title of this blog is from a framework composed by Occupational Science researcher and writer Ann Wilcock in the 90s. The concepts of Doing (doing the thing), Being (sense of identity and meaning), Becoming (learning, growth, transformation) and Belonging (community, connection) explore the relationship humans have with their occupations. I would say that I experience meaning in all of these areas through practising textile crafts.
Things I am currently working on include:
A giant knitted lace Shetland Wedding Ring Shawl
Quilt in English Paper Piecing
Handspun and knitted shawl
Learning tablet weaving
Handsewn adjustable skirt
Learning Sashiko
Various adventures in medieval reenactment kit.
I mean it's not surprising that I rarely finish anything, really.
There will be pictures, but it's December in the northern hemisphere and the amount of time I have to photograph things in the sun is SHORT. Please enjoy this long text post!
