The Ultimate Guide To Packing Your Perfect Beach Bag For A Stress-Free Day
Tumblr media
Packing your perfect beach bag for a stress-free day requires careful planning and organization. With the right essentials and a strategic approach, you can ensure that your day by the water is enjoyable and worry-free. Here’s the ultimate guide to packing your beach bag:
Start with the Right Bag: Choose a beach bag that is spacious, durable, and water-resistant. Look for features like multiple compartments, sturdy straps, and easy-to-clean materials. A bag with mesh pockets is ideal for storing wet items or sand toys.
Protect Your Skin: Sun protection is essential for a day at the beach. Pack a high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face from the sun. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.
Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day. Invest in a reusable water bottle and fill it with cold water before heading to the beach. You can also pack refreshing drinks like coconut water or fruit-infused water for a tasty treat.
Pack Comfort Essentials: Include items to enhance your comfort while lounging on the beach. Pack a lightweight beach towel, a comfortable beach chair or blanket, and a portable umbrella for shade. A collapsible cooler filled with snacks and drinks will keep you fueled throughout the day.
Bring Entertainment: Keep yourself entertained with a good book, magazine, or portable speaker for music. Pack a beach-friendly game like paddle ball or frisbee for some active fun in the sun. Don’t forget to bring a waterproof phone case to protect your device from sand and water.
Organize Your Beachwear: Pack your swimsuit, cover-up, and flip-flops in a waterproof pouch or bag to keep them separate from your other belongings. Bring an extra change of clothes in case you want to grab a bite to eat or explore nearby shops after your beach day.
Stay Safe: Ensure your beach day is safe by packing essential items like a first aid kit, insect repellent, and a whistle in case of emergencies. Familiarize yourself with the beach’s safety guidelines and be aware of any potential hazards like strong currents or jellyfish.
Protect Your Belongings: Keep your valuables safe and secure by storing them in a waterproof pouch or bag. This includes items like your phone, wallet, keys, and jewelry. Consider bringing a small lock to secure your bag when you’re away from it.
Stay Clean: Bring along hand sanitizer, baby wipes, and tissues to keep your hands and surfaces clean. Pack a small trash bag to dispose of any garbage and help keep the beach clean for everyone to enjoy.
Plan for Post-Beach Care: After a day in the sun, it’s important to take care of your skin and hair. Pack aloe vera gel or after-sun lotion to soothe sunburned skin and leave-in conditioner to hydrate salt-damaged hair. Don’t forget to rinse off any sand and saltwater before heading home.
Packing your perfect beach bag for a stress-free day requires thoughtful preparation and organization. By including essential items like sun protection, hydration, comfort essentials, and entertainment, you can ensure that your day at the beach is enjoyable and worry-free. Remember to stay safe, protect your belongings, and take care of your skin and hair after a day in the sun. With the right essentials and a strategic approach, you can make the most of your beach day and create lasting memories by the water.

CARBOMER 941 CAS NO.9062-04-8
Carbomer 941 is an important thickener, which is a high molecular polymer cross-linked by acrylic acid or acrylate and allyl ether. As a water-soluble rheology modifier, it is used as a water-soluble rheology modifier. Thickener with efficient thickening and suspending properties
 Carbomer 941 Details
Carbomer 941 is a very widely used rheology modified thickener, especially in the field of personal care and home care products. It is white loose powder and slightly odorous. Due to its strong hygroscopicity, special attention must be paid to storage, and it should be sealed at room temperature. Carbomer 941, as an important component of cosmetics, can change the viscosity of cosmetic products, and also improve the stability, beauty and fluidity of products.
 Advantages of Carbomer 941:
With multiple functions, a variety of texture experience
Special skin feel characteristics: soft, powdery after-feel
Only 1% dosage can provide efficient film-forming properties, improve skin barrier and reduce skin moisture loss
Compatible with high content of metal oxides and clays (such as 17% kaolin)
The polymer exhibits a longer Newtonian fluid phase, forming a thicker, more homogeneous film on the skin, with good product spread.
The polymer provides shear thinning properties for good skin spreading. Compounding with co-thickeners can increase yield for good stability.
Advantages of Desheng on Carbomer 941:
Capacity upgrade: At present, Desheng has a professional production base, specially hired professional and technical personnel to maintain the whole process, and the daily output reaches 3-5 tons. While realizing mass production, the quality has been tested and also meets various standards;
 Excellent quality: The carbomer raw materials produced by Desheng Biochemical have passed a series of tests and inspections, and all indexes are up to standard, and the transparency has been repeatedly recognized by customers, whether it is appearance, light transmittance or viscosity. parameters can meet the needs of customers;
 Professional after-sales team: Desheng has a professional after-sales team. If customers encounter any problems in use, there will be professionals to answer your questions;
On-demand packaging: The carbomer produced by Desheng is first sealed in a non-toxic polypropylene plastic bag, and then put into a cardboard box with strong moisture resistance, so there is no need to worry about it being difficult to store after buying it. The problem.
 Application of Carbomer 940
Personal care and home care products, such as cosmetics and hand sanitizer gel.
In the field of medicine, such as suspending agent and adhesive in pharmaceuticals, coupling agent in commonly used color Doppler ultrasound, etc.
In the industrial field, rheology modifiers in water-based coatings, negative electrode gelling agents in alkaline batteries, gelling agents in solid fuel glue, etc.
Applied to the neutral ink system, it not only improves the viscosity and pseudoplasticity of the neutral ink, but also improves the biological stability of the neutral ink.
 Carbomer 941 Instructions for Use:
When configuring Carbomer 941 gel, translucent fish-eye-like particles appear
This may happen for two reasons: 1. Carbomer powder absorbs moisture during storage, making it difficult to disperse. 2. It is caused by insufficient dispersion and stirring during configuration. Therefore, in the process of storage and configuration, pay attention to the above two aspects to avoid the appearance of "fisheye" during configuration.
When configuring Carbomer 941, solid clumps appear
This phenomenon is easiest to find when spreading the product into a thin film. When this happens, we need to pay attention to the following three points: 1. Proper dispersion and stirring 3. Whether there are materials that cannot be compatible with it 3. Adjust the order of adding materials.

Acne Cures on a budget  (revamped)
Acne is a very tricky subject that millions of people struggle with- sometimes for their entire lives. If you have struggled yourself I’m sure you’re aware that there is no cure-all for acne, but there may be some methods for healing the skin that you haven’t heard yet so I’m going to share everything I know with you just in case.  First, the basics:
1. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy foods. This is just a given. If you want to feel comfortable in your skin you may have to make some lifestyle changes. that Includes getting regular exercise and sunlight. 2. Recognize the fact that your skin is an organ. Like any organ it has an ecosystem of healthy bacteria that ought to be treated with care- much like a garden. It will need different things on different days, and in order to reach it’s fullest potential, the gardener (that’s you) will need to pay close attention to it.
3. Be aware that pimples are infected pores which are attempting to heal themselves. The puss inside of them is a soup of white blood cells which are trying to repair the skin for some reason. Finding the root cause of the infection before treatment is ideal.
A few common acne culprits: Your acne could be hormonal, it could be caused by allergies (ex: food allergies, detergent allergies), or your skin may be getting bacterial infections from unsanitary surfaces or poor air quality.
Now to get into the technical stuff:
~If your skin is hurting, red, swollen, try putting down harsh chemicals like Niacinamide and Retinol, and try something calming like rosehip oil or aloe vera.
Amaranthus oil, tea tree oil, rapeseed oil, rosewater, and witch hazel are all examples of gentle things that are amazing for the skin. I know natural skin healers can be very expensive, but if you can’t afford them don’t hesitate to steel them from your local, unethical corporate store. If you need tips on s***lifting,  try visiting this Reddit community at   https://www.reddit.com/r/IllegalLifeProTips/
~Rinse your face with cool or cold water every time you wash it. This seals up your pores and prevents dirt and bacteria from entering them.
~Make sure that the things that touch your face every day are clean. Make sure that the cloths and towels that you use on your face are clean. Disinfect face tools regularly and use hot water on wash cloths to kill bacteria between washes.  Clean your glasses. Change your sheets and pillow cases frequently. In addition, avoid touching your face constantly with your hands as well as your hair, and keep your hands and hair clean.
~⚠️Don’t pick your face! Pimples are like Petri dishes full of puss and bacteria and when you pop them you are just spreading the ickiness around to the rest of your face. In addition to that, every time you pop a pimple you are damaging the barrier of your skin, which not only can cause scarring and dark spots, but it can leave your skin vulnerable to bad bacteria and cause further breakouts. For these reasons, you should only pop a zit as a last resort.
~Popping: If you have very stubborn acne and insist on popping anyway, go to an aesthetician if you have the privilege to do so
If you can not see an aesthetician, try this method for safe pimple popping:
Wash the affected area with hot water and a mild soap. Pop the pimple making sure you get EVERYTHING out of it, wash it again with extra hot water, dry it with something clean. Then, apply lots of pressure to the popped pimple so that it doesn't get the chance to “refill” itself (use a q-tip if you have one for at least 30 seconds to 5 minutes depending on how big the pimple is). Next, put some rubbing alcohol, and some diluted tea tree oil on the pimple and cover it with the sticky part of a band-aid. Leave the band-aid on until you are certain that it will not grow back.
~🛑 Stop using all of those skincare products. Obviously if they worked, you wouldn't even be reading this. Using certain products (especially the harsher ones) can cause allergic reactions and sometimes dry out your skin, which can trigger your skin to produce extra oil to overcompensate, which leads to acne. They also tend to eat away at you financially. Break the vicious cycle. Try tossing all of your products and use a mild soap and simple moisturizer for a few weeks before starting anything new again.
If you insist on using acne products then follow this important rule.                 🚨 🚨  Do not use multiple products within the same 3 weeks. Doing this makes it impossible to figure out which products could be helping or causing further damage to your skin.
~Know that many skin care products do have valuable substances, but they use fillers and fragrances that can ruin your skin. Try looking at the ingredients in your skin care products, researching the individual components, and purchasing said components individually. Ex: instead of buying an ‘aloe infused moisturizer’, try purchasing real aloe vera gel- or better yet buy an aloe vera plant- and use that ingredient as you see fit. It can be more cost effective, better for the environment, and a good learning experience.
~Avoid wearing foundation and concealer. Of course it is tempting to cover acne with makeup, but your makeup can add fuel to the fire by clogging pores and spreading bad bacteria
~If you are applying makeup to the face, make sure that you are regularly cleaning your brushes and disinfecting your pallets. Dirty makeup supplies don’t just contribute to acne, they can cause gnarly infections in sensitive areas (like the eyes) and send you to the hospital.
Now here are some advanced methods for healing the skin. Feel free to alter them so that they suit your specific needs:
🧖🏾‍♀️The Steam Method:
If you suspect that your soap is a culprit, or you just want to try something new, replace your morning cleansing routine with this (give skin 2 weeks time to purge before deciding whether or not this works for you). Get a light oil, preferably rosehip or coconut, and rub it on your face very well for at least 30 seconds. Then, take a clean washcloth and submerge it in the hottest water you can take. Take the washcloth and firmly press it against the entire surface of your face until it cools. Use the cloth to remove all the oil you can manage.
🧖🏼‍♀️The other Steam Method:
Get a pot and boil water in it. Put your face over the boiling water (not too close lol) and let the steam open up your pores for 5-10 minutes. After you are done, use a clean, damp washcloth to wipe your face. Then get an ice cube or cold water and put it all over your face to seal your pores back up. Personally I like putting tea in the water sometimes. Peppermint tea and green tea are great.
🩹 Bandaging:
Now this might sound ridiculous, but I have learned that putting bandages/band-aids onto your face at night can make a world of difference when it comes to acne and hyperpigmentation. My personal method is this: each night after I steam and wash my face, I put tiny bit of rubbing alcohol onto each pimple. I then wash and sanitize my hands with rubbing alcohol, apply diluted tea tree oil to each problem area on my face, and then take an ordinary cloth bandage and cover every zit that I can find. After each zit is covered, I apply moisturizer and serums to the rest of the face as I normally would. Change bandages frequently (1-3 times a day depending on how oily your skin is), and leave them on the affected area until swelling has gone down. Repeat the process as many times as you’d like.
Usually normal bandaids are fine, but at times when my acne flares up badly I will go so far as to use gauze on large areas of my face. The cloth absorbs any oil that your skin secrets while protecting it from bacteria and sweat all night long, and the bandage seals in the tea tree oil so that it can penetrate your pores. I have noticed that the sticky part of a bandaid does the best job at diffusing large pimples as opposed to the white cloth part which is best for blackheads.
~If all else fails and you have done your best to cure acne at home, consider talking to a doctor if you have that option. 🥼 They may try to prescribe an acne medication, but these options tend to be extremely expensive and hard on your organs. Ask them if you can try a prescribed antibiotic supplement first.
Last but certainly not least: Sit with the fact that picture perfect skin is not healthy skin. As mentioned earlier, your skin is an organ. And it’s job is merely to protect your insides- not to get you onto the cover of a magazine. Your skin is not meant to look like the porcelain on a doll.
💊💊💊💊💊And that is it! wow that was a long post. I hope this can help at least one person out there with their skin troubles because this took forever

Bike Touring and Bikepacking
13 June 2021
I was really happy with my bike and my gear for the ride back from San Francisco. I had considered taking my Surly with the touring gear, but opted instead to take the Warbird and the bikepacking gear. Both would have worked, but I think the latter was simply more enjoyable.
The distinctions between bike touring and bikepacking are nuanced, debated, semantic, and sort of irrelevant, but to me touring implies riding long distances over many days on the road, whereas bike packing suggests more an off-road bicycle equivalent to backpacking. But the line between these two pursuits is blurry. In addition, bike touring and bikepacking are associated with different types of bikes and different ways of carrying gear - a touring bike with paneers versus a mountain bike with soft luggage. But again, the lines are fuzzy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My 2019 cross-country trip was pretty classic touring. My Surly Disc Trucker is a classic touring bike and I was loaded with panniers, duffels, and a handlebar bag. But during the past year and a half, my Salsa Warbird has become my go-to bike for both day rides and 3-4 day overnight trips. It’s a lot more fun to ride than the Surly. It’s lighter, it handles better, and frankly, I really like indexed shifting at my fingertips. The Salsa is very much a gravel bike with wider tires and is comfortable on both pavement and on rough gravel roads. On the other hand, the bike requires a completely different approach to packing.
One of the things that makes the gravel bike/bikepacking setup work is that you can’t carry as much stuff, so it’s lighter (it helps that the bike itself is much lighter, too). This not only makes pedaling uphill easier, it makes it easier to maneuver the bike around obstacles or carry it up steps. Combine this with the way the weight is distributed - higher and narrower - and the fact that the bike itself handles more nimbly than a touring bike, and the result is a much more fun and versatile touring rig.
BIKE
The bike is a Salsa Warbird with a 61cm carbon frame. It has Shimano GRX components with 2x11 gearing. It came with an 11-34 rear cassette, which I've swapped out for an 11-40. This gives me a much-needed granny gear for steep, loaded climbs. I had to tighten up a loose derailleur hanger early in the trip, but besides that the only problem was noisy gears as the grit and the crud built up on the chain, the pulley wheels, and the chain guides. Occasional attempts to clean things helped, but it was hard on the road to do a very thorough job.
TIRES
The tires are 700x42s. The front tire is the Teravail Cannonball that came with the bike (4000+ miles), still with the same tube. The rear tire is a relatively new Teravail Washburn set up tubeless. They both worked well - no flats and and few signs of wear over the 1200-mile trip. I topped off the air a couple of times (larger tires means I run fairly low pressure - maybe 45psi).
ATTACHMENTS
A Wahoo Bolt bike computer (and a cadence sensor on the crank). A rear blinker. I had a good headlight, but kept it stowed the entire trip, since there were no night rides and no tunnels. I have bottle cages on my forks and under the down tube. A Salsa Cradle is mounted to the handlebars, to which I strap my sleeping gear. I have an improvised porteur rack above the front wheel (the carbon forks are not intended to carry a traditional front rack) that provides some extra stowage for light stuff and a mounting location for the headlight. All the other luggage is soft stuff strapped to the frame.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LUGGAGE
Handlebar roll. A good compression dry sack holds my 'sleeping system.' It straps into a cradle on the bars.
Utility bag. Easy to unclip and bring with me when I'm away from the bike. Holds electronics, toiletries, spork and knife, other odds and ends. An additional pouch served as a holster for my iPhone.
Two stem/feed bags. Easy access to snacks, layers, and a little spare space for a bottle of Gatorade, a defrosting burrito, or in one case, a chocolate milk shake.
Gas tank/top tube bag. Small camera, handkerchief, buff, face mask.
Seat bag. Clothing, outerwear (when not strapped on elsewhere), a small cook set, a little food. I strap on a pair of sandals which serve as camp shoes, town shoes, and for potential water crossings.
Frame bag. Tools, spare tube, parts and supplies, water filter, stove, tent poles/pegs, a small daypack, a small towel, and so forth. It’s a good place to stuff frozen burritos, extra napkins, sweaty arm warmers, and other stuff during the day.
GEAR
It’s impressive how much stuff I squeezed into a pretty compact suite of luggage. This photo shows everything I took off the bike when I got home, including the clothes off my back, the helmet and glasses off my head, and the shoes off my feet.
Tumblr media
Shelter/Sleeping. My ‘sleeping system’ fits in a small dry bag on the handlebars. It includes a lightweight tent, a down quilt, and an ultralight air mattress. The combination works to the mid-30s and if it’s colder, I can wear my down jacket. The tent poles and pegs live in the frame bag.
Clothing. A change of bike shorts and socks, a short and long sleeve jersey. A set of lightweight clothes for off the bike. A rain jacket, rain pants, and a light down jacket. I’ve got both fingerless and full-finger gloves. Two headbands, one for sweat, the other for warmth. Arm warmers. Leg warmers. A rain cap. A baseball cap. When I'm on roads and not wearing my rain gear, I usually wear a lightweight yellow vest - both for visibility and as a windbreak.
Cooking. I have an MSR pocket rocket stove in my frame bag and a compact cook set in my seat bag (small titanium pot, fuel canister, lighter, rubber scraper, and a stove stand). I don’t cook much, but mornings are better with boiling water for coffee and oatmeal. I occasionally cook a dinner, such as a dehydrated backpacking meal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Food. Unlike backpacking, where you carry food for days or weeks, biking involves resupplying as you go. When expecting to camp, I tend to buy a sandwich or packaged burrito earlier the day, though I always have some sort of backup meal in my gear. I carry instant oatmeal packs and instant coffee for mornings. I keep an assortment of snacks - nuts, string cheese, pepperoni sticks, candy bars, gels, energy bars, fig newtons. Things that cover a range of cravings and nutritional needs and that can be easily restocked at gas stations and general stores.
Drinks. I carried three water bottles, one on each side of the fork and another under the down tube. Whether I use all of them depends on conditions and availability of water. I can typically make room in a stem bag for more water or a large bottle of Gatorade when I expect a long dry stretch. I have a small collapsible water bag and a water filter so I can resupply from natural water sources.
Tools and supplies. The lower portion of the frame pack holds bike tools, supplies (Gorilla tape, super glue, a patch kit), and spare parts (brake pads, chain link, zip ties). An extra tube, a small pump, tire sealant, and a small bottle of chain lube. I keep my good bike multitool and a small knife/scissors in a pocket on one of my stem bags for easy access.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Electronics. iPhone. Bike computer. Rear blinker. Headlight (not used). Canon SX720 camera (small camera with a good zoom). All USB rechargeable. A good 13mAh battery (I can go three days on phone, blinker, and bike computer with this). And a spare 6mAh battery, just in case. A corded five-outlet USB charger/adapter. An SD-lightning adapter to load camera pics to phone. And several microUSB cables and a lightning cable for phone (this can fail and is critical, so a spare makes sense). Cables and charger live in a pouch in the utility bag. It didn’t happen on this trip, but on long days I can charge phone and bike computer while I’m riding.
Other Stuff: First aid kit, TP, a small fast-dry towel, shower wipes (wish I’d discovered these years ago). Wallet (in jersey or shirt pocket), a bunch of quarters for showers and car washes. A few paper maps for old times sake and souvenir stickers I pick up along the way. The mesh pockets on the stem bags hold a bike multitool, a small knife/scissors, a small bottle of DEET, hand sanitizer, and sunscreen. I have two sticks of Burt’s Bee’s Wax - one is for chapped lips and the other is for my pedals to keep my cleats/shoes from squeaking (I try to keep the two straight). It’s nice to have this stuff easily accessible and not buried deep in larger bags.

"Strange days have found us; strange days have tracked us down..."
Image is a circa 1940s ad for Dettol, from an ebay listing. I had never heard of Dettol until I read the story of a woman whose family lived in Third World poverty but overcame their circumstances. She reminisced that Dettol had played a big role in cleaning their home and protecting their health.
I found Dettol products on ebay and learned more about it from their website; it's an antibacterial and antiviral line of products apparently well-known outside the US for decades. Is it effective against Covid19? They say it's effective against preexisting coronavirus strains but hasn't been tested yet for Covid19. So I assume it is effective, and managed to order bar soap, cleaning concentrate and even hand cleanser at somewhat reasonable prices. The cleaning concentrate even has an "epidemic" dilution recommendation in the directions. We use it as a cleaning spray. The Dettol plant in India is working 24/7 these days...prices are inching up but their products are still available on ebay.
Another aspect of these pandemic days is the disappearance of reasonably priced hand sanitizer, once a Dollar Tree item but now subject of much price gouging. Even on ebay, which claims to have removed 5 million price-gouging listings, I saw an 8 oz. bottle of hand sanitizer today for $69.99.
When I read that New York's Governor Cuomo had prison inmates making the stuff I figured it wasn't rocket science. Apparently just a combination of isopropyl alcohol & aloe gel.
I have an automotive background and know isopropyl is used as a fuel treatment to prevent frozen lines & remove water from gas tanks. Sure enough, there was some NAPA Thermo-Aid in the garage. According to the label it's 99.9% isopropyl, not 60% like the stuff in the drug store...which you can't cut with gel without bringing the percentage of alcohol below the minimum for even mediocre hand sanitizer.
Well I didn't have any aloe gel but I had a bottle of Corn Huskers Lotion, a thick glycerine-based hand moisturizer, so I mixed a 12-ounce bottle of Thermo-Aid to 4 ounces of Corn Huskers and have a robust 16 oz hand santizer in an old pump shampoo bottle (retail value $140?) It's a bit thinner than Purell, which is probably 30% gel while mine is 25% lotion.
Maybe this info about Dettol and homemade hand sanitizer is useful to someone...I hope so. BTW isopropyl is flammable so use common sense if you mix your own. Good luck to all & stay safe.
Opening couplet is a lyric from "Strange Days" by The Doors.

Why Aren’t We Taking Climate Change As Seriously As Covid-19?
I’ve been debating on whether to write this blog post, mainly because I don’t want to seem insensitive to those currently diagnosed with Coronavirus and those who have unfortunately lost their lives, but I also feel I can’t stay silent on what I feel is a huge issue being ignored and swept under the rug.
It frustrates me that, in our glass houses, we only open our eyes to immediate threats. Climate change has been building for many years, and we are ever closer to not reaching our goal of staying under 1.5 degrees of warming, though governments turn away. Companies continue with business as normal. Banks fund fossil fuels. Industries exploit those from poor, underdeveloped areas who are suffering the most, but contributing the least to climate change.
Today, websites state that around 93,000 - 100,000 people have been diagnosed with Coronavirus, with 3,100 - 3,500 deaths (information found from Science Alert & CNBC). That’s a huge number of people, but let’s consider on the flip side how many people are dying due to the climate crisis. There’s several articles on this, though this article is from 2009:
“Researchers believe that global warming is already responsible for some 150,000 deaths each year around the world, and fear that the number may well double by 2030 even if we start getting serious about emissions reductions today.” - Scientific American, ‘The Impact of Global Warming on Human Fatality Rates.’
150,000 deaths per year. That’s a huge increase from the 3,500 deaths estimated due to Covid-19 currently (though we have a quote coming in a few paragraphs time that puts the number of casualties per year from global warming much higher.) So why aren’t we taking climate change seriously? I think when look towards the companies in power and to our governments, we see our answer. Even now, airlines and travel companies are dropping prices due to Covid-19, and are capitalising on this situation, encouraging people to travel in such a high risk situation. Businesses don’t care about epidemics, they just look for a new way to profit from it. Look at the branding of fossil fuel companies like Shell and Exxon Mobile, who use their social media accounts to shout about how sustainable they are, while still digging for fossil fuels (don’t forget about that list of the main 100 companies responsible for 71% of the worlds carbon emissions. Shell and Exxon are on there. So... someone is lying somewhere.)
Cities are over polluted, respiratory issues are on the up, we’re having extreme heat in the summers, there has been mass flooding in the UK and India while California, the Amazon Rainforest and Australia have seen deathly fires. Climate change also contributes to and helps the spread of illness - possibly helping Covid-19 as it continues to reach communities world wide. People are up in arms, buying face masks, anti bacterial gel, and toilet roll in mass. Everyone is sharing 20 second songs that are good to sing while washing your hands, but would any of these things help you if you came into contact with someone with the virus? Maybe, maybe not. But the fear is there, I’ve heard from many friends who are worried. My family are waiting for the situation to blow over until they next come to visit me in France. Again, why is Covid-19 seen as more serious than climate change?
I feel the media have a huge part in this. Covid-19 is all over the news. What it is. Where it came from. What you can do to protect yourself from it. How many deaths have there been today? What about today? And today? It’s constant. There have already been documentary style programmes covering it. People are obsessed. Here in Paris, so many shops have completely sold out of masks, anti-bacterial gel and ingredients to make your own home-made anti-bac. In the UK, people are stealing hand sanitizers from hospitals. But the reality is, if we don’t act, climate change will kill more globally, and cause more deadly epidemics.
“With a global death toll of over 3,000, COVID-19 still appears far less deadly than fossil fuels, which, according to a recent study that Myllyvirta co-authored for Greenpeace, are responsible for 4.5 million air pollution-related deaths each year, aside from climate impacts. But scientists warn that warmer, wetter conditions are increasing the probability of such outbreaks. No one knows how deadly the next one might be.” - DW, ‘Coronavirus and Climate Change.’
4.5 million deaths each year. That’s the higher number I was talking about earlier. Another big leap from the 3,500 estimated dead due to Covid-19. So again. Why aren’t we taking this seriously?
We need to move to a regenerative culture. We need to move to a circular economy. We need a global health system that helps and supports everyone. We need to move away from capitalism, which exploits peoples and habitats worldwide, and come together globally to rally for green energy (that’s water, wind and sun by the way, not nuclear enegy.) We need to cut down on air pollution, which has fallen since Covid-19.  PLEASE NOTE I’m not saying Coronavirus is good, far from it. No one needs to die for the Earth to ‘restore’ itself. Consider this, China has been aiming to hit their carbon emissions target in 2030, which means they’re planning on increasing the emissions they put out until then, not cutting it. Coronavirus has put a bit of a dent in that, which you can see from this image taken by NASA:
Tumblr media
That shows a huge decrease in Nitrious Oxide emissions into the air which comes from, yes you guessed it! Fossil fuel emissions. Despite airlines dropping their prices, Coronavirus has been making people think twice about traveling. It’s been stopping ‘business as normal’ in the areas most affected, which in turn has given us greener, cleaner air. All these things that people won’t do for the climate crisis, they’re doing for Covid-19. Again, note, it’s important that I stress that I do not think it is good that Coronavirus has caused this. I do not believe in eco-fascism. I just hope, going forward, people consider the lives lost to climate change, and take as seriously.
Because imagine - if we took climate change more seriously... If we implemented changes that would continue to keep us on track of staying under 1.5 degrees on warming, that would lower air pollution. Maybe we could create something like a, I don’t know, green new deal? Maybe that’s too crazy, because the western world isn’t being affected badly enough yet. I do hope, that Covid-19 opens up people’s eyes to the underlying threat of climate change, which should be considered a serious epidemic. That we should be taking seriously. Seriously enough that we are making lifestyle changes AND rallying our governments to implement stronger policies.
I’m still anxious about posting this, purely because I hope I haven’t said the wrong thing. I sometimes worry that I do not have enough knowledge to be speaking on this, but I really enjoy writing my blog, raising my voice and taking action in this way. Please, if you do have information that I do not have, reach out and share it with me. Also, check out all the articles I’ve linked throughout this blog, because they are incredible and a great source of information.
Until next time,
The Sustainable Swap.

Is Your Hand Sanitizer Really Killing Germs?
When my patients ask me what they can do to shield themselves from the spread of germs, my answer is consistently the equivalent, "wash your hands with cleanser and water each opportunity you get." Why at that point is there such a push toward the utilization of hand sanitizers? Studies show that utilizing liquor based hand sanitizers is a protected, viable strategy for cleaning hands between standard hand washing and ought to be utilized uniquely as an enhancement.
youtube
You see containers all over the place, in schools, medical clinics, kid care focuses, air terminals, and on the corridors of journey ships. I need to admit I make moment hand sanitizers promptly accessible in my office. In as much as liquor based rubs are useful in checking the spread of germs on hands that aren't obviously filthy there might be some worry with respect to their utilization. I tell my patients that there is uplifting news and terrible news with regards to hand sanitizers. This is what I mean.
Advantages and disadvantages for the Use of Hand Sanitizers
Not all brands of hand sanitizers are the equivalent. An examination distributed in the diary of Emerging Infectious Diseases revealed that at any rate one brand didn't contain the vital 60 percent liquor expected to kill destructive bacteria and infections. The centralization of ethyl liquor, ethanol, or some variety ought to be somewhere in the range of 60 and 95 percent so as to be viable so make certain to peruse the name before purchasing the item. Most brands of hand sanitizers resemble the other the same, same jug, siphon and cost.
Hand sanitizers are not suggested instead of cleanser and water because liquor doesn't slice through grime, so earth, blood, dung or other soil ought to be washed away first. On the off chance that cleanser and water isn't accessible, obviously, liquor based rubs are a solid insurance. For example, on the off chance that you sniffle in the vehicle, or you are fixed, or you stop to place in contact focal points by all methods utilize your hand sanitizer. Studies have indicated that smaller scale creatures are substantially more pervasive on telephone beneficiaries, PC consoles, and work areas so utilizing a hand sanitizer in this circumstance is a smart thought.
As a dermatologist, I alert my patients to be mindful so as not to abuse sanitizers because they can dry out the skin because of their liquor content. In the event that you have dry, breaking skin you ought to abstain from utilizing a liquor based item until your skin has mended since it might just fuel your condition. On the off chance that bacteria get into the breaks of your skin it can prompt disease.
Realizing the amount to utilize is significant as well. Utilize enough gel to cover your hands altogether on all sides. The rule of thumb is if your hands dry inside 10 to 15 seconds you haven't sufficiently utilized. On the off chance that you are a parent or grandparent, you might need to consider utilizing hand sanitizers on youngsters just when essential and consistently keep liquor based gels out of kids' range.
Remember that any item containing liquor is combustible and ought not be put away or utilized anyplace close to warmth or fire. Ensure your hands are totally dry before utilizing a cigarette lighter or other lighting gadget.
