I was having some real fishmonger hours in my studio yesterday! I wish I'd taken more photos of the rest of the fish, but the dang flatfish are total camera hogs!!

Talk about a resting fish face!

As a young flatfish grows, one eye migrates to join its pair on the other of its body. This gives them their “flat fish” appearance, as they swim about eyes-side-up. Embracing the true meaning of the side eye, some flatfish bury themselves in the sand until only their eyes are visible. They blend into their surroundings, waiting to surprise their prey or to avoid becoming prey themselves 🐟👀

i made the halibut sweater. its my first time making a sweater in the round, making a sweater for me, and the first time ive ever done colorwork.

i did a gauge beforehand on the colorwork but it turns out after getting used to it for a while, my gauge is much tighter for colorwork than regular knit, so the shoulders are a bit tight. Also, the arms are a tigher fit than i would probably like. but it still fits and i feel comfortable wearing it out and im so happy ;_;

since i really wanted to get this done asap to the point of hurting my hands from knitting too much, ive pushed other hobby stuff to the side, like the pokemon cross stitch and painting on a regular basis. i'll be sporadically uploading chaos updates for that.

(also i haven't woven in my ends in. brb)

Aurora Borealis, Halibut Point State Park, MA - Oct. 10, 2024

Well, here we are again! Thanks to a friend keeping an eye on the aurora forecast, we drove up to Halibut Point once more to see the aurora. We already knew from some early social media posts that the view was really good in eastern Mass. We got up there at a peak in activity (it was Kp 8 for the night), and stayed until about 11:30pm, when the bottom two shots were taken. We were getting a lot more green than red at that point, and the activity seemed to be decreasing; and we all had work in the morning.

Another good friend of mine who'd missed seeing the aurora the last time managed to get out there with us. The top three photos are his (thanks, Bill!). (The foliage blurriness in all of them is due to the length of exposure and some pretty high winds.)

Also some pretty great star watching. When aurora activity started to die down a bit, we got to see the Milky Way (faint but distinguishable), more of Cassopeia than I usually get to see, and also find the Andromeda galaxy with the naked eye. Plus, saw a bunch of meteors! I think it was the Draconids (I think I remember seeing a headline about those being visible right around now).

In the city of Kuji, where this aquarium is located, the world's northernmost 'Ama' divers still work today. In this tank, active an Ama diver demonstrate free diving. This photo captures the moment when she unearthed a white variant of flounder from the sand. The flounder she was holding was quite adorable.
