I finished Episode 1. All in all, a fine follow up to HF 2.

As expected, it was a short game, in keeping with the episodic approach to the game.

Played through Half-Life 2 again with the excellent Beta Aesthetics mod, it surprised me at how different it felt, it felt much more like a 2004 game, ironically. Here’s some beta conscripts, I do prefer the Civil Protection but I kinda wish they were in the final game somehow.

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS

In the original drafts for Half-Life 2, the combine were originally much larger and blue. the metro police were small and shrunken, and they could only wield pistols, which looked large and awkward in their minuscule hands. The administrator, known in the game files as Wallace Green, was originally a palette-swapped model of the main character of the franchise, Morgan Freeman.

Alyx

Alyx Vance was initially named Alex Vance, but her name was changed to Alyx as an indicator that Eli, her father, is very stupid and a weak man. Her iconic pistol is not available to use as Gorton.

Hair

In scrapped character models, Barney would have a ponytail, intended as a callback to Gorgon’s famous “ponytail” from Half-Life. According to Mike Shapiro, this plotline would have culminated in Half-Life 2: Episode 3, with both of the pair sporting full heads of beautiful, luscious hair. Also Kleiner will use minoxidil to minor success.

Facial Hair

Dr. Isaac Kleiner and Russell are the same people from different timelines. The G-Man swapped Kleiner out for Russell during the events of Half-Life: Alyx because he likes men with beards more than men without beards. This was confirmed by Gabe Newell in a subtweet. This is why Gordon and Eli are influenced by the G-Man. it is unconfirmed, but rumored that Adrian Shephard has a beard beneath his gas mask.
