I never understand how so many gamers will simplify Alyx dislike towards Judith Mossman and gloss over it as just her being petty when it's so much more nuanced than that.

Alyx lost her mother in the Black Mesa incident, her entire life was uprooted overnight and she was thrown into a chaotic world where she was no longer safe to be a child like she deserves.

And Judith, we know, glorifies the incident, she wasn't there and clearly sees it through the lense of legend, whereas Alyx was there.

And until this point everybody believed gordon, this guy who saved all the people close to Alyx, was dead. And Judith according to alyx, believes the day would have gone differently if she was there.

So here is this woman, who was not there, who talks about what is possibly the worst day of Alyx's life, the day she lost her life, her mother, and treats the whole event like a glory quest. I'd be pissed as shit too, especially if she did this for years.

Now do I think Judith is bad? No, I think she's a nuanced and interesting character. I just also think Alyx's dislike of her is also incredibly story full and nuanced too.

And at the end of the day, we all know the only person who could've replaced gordon that day and survive the same, is Alyx.

Alyx:

dominates chess for sure

loves air hockey. she has accidentally injured several opponents though and therefore she has a temporary air hockey ban

she can play Go but she has to think really hard about it

space invaders stresses her the fuck out and she can't get past level 2 because she panics and loses all her buildings

Gordon:

checkers. he really likes checkers

decent at chess but Alyx destroys him every time

played Go with Kleiner a lot but he's still too aggressive at it

really good at Snake for some reason

Barney:

the best at space invaders, he has a handheld for it the size of a tamogotchi that he plays on his breaks all the time

plays Go with Kleiner regularly. he's not the best but he can hold his own for a while

also an air hockey fiend

Eli:

somehow he doesn't have the patience for chess but he can and will outlast everyone in Monopoly

checkers with Gordon. they end up chasing each other's pieces for like ten minutes by the end in a furious stalemate
