"Why the hell are you here?" was one of the hardest things Keith had always said to Hailey. Not the hardest, though, once the whole break up kind of speech made him feel like shit afterwards. Still, it was just about right, wasn't it? Hailey definitely did not deserve someone like him, she deserved better, she deserved someone who could provide security for her, who could keep her living this protected world of hers. And yet... he did open the door for her, didn't he? Why was it so hard to do the right thing? "I thought told you I never wanted to see you again, Hailey."

I met you in the dark, you lit me up You made me feel as though I was enough We danced the night away, we drank too much I held your hair back when You were throwing up
Then you smiled over your shoulder For a minute, I was stone-cold sober I pulled you closer to my chest And you asked me to stay over I said, "I already told ya I think that you should get some rest"
I knew I loved you then But you'd never know 'Cause I played it cool when I was scared of letting go I know I needed you But I never showed But I wanna stay with you until we're grey and old Just say you won't let go

Matthew Tkachuk, the Panthers’ goalie-goading throwback, delivers hits — and wins — when it counts
by Hailey Salvian and Jeremy Rutherford
Matthew Tkachuk put his father in “timeout.”
That’s why Keith Tkachuk, an 18-year veteran of the NHL and one of the league’s best American-born players, wasn’t available to talk about his son’s remarkable run that has taken the Panthers from “biggest disappointment” to one win from the Eastern Conference finals.
On a Toronto radio station in March, the elder Tkachuk called the Panthers “soft.” By many accounts, that assessment was accurate at the time, and the words seemed to light a fire under the team — as did Paul Maurice’s tirade on the bench the same day during a game against the Maple Leafs.
Florida won its next six games and went 6-1-1 down the stretch to qualify for the playoffs.
Now, there’s no time for distractions, and Matthew wants to keep a lid on his pops, who informed The Athletic of his “timeout” via text.
After upsetting the 65-win Bruins in the first round, the Panthers are the betting favorites to win the Stanley Cup, leading 3-0 in their second-round series against Toronto with a chance at a sweep Wednesday at FLA Live Arena.
And the 25-year-old Tkachuk — in the midst of another career year that would have been MVP-worthy had it not been for Connor McDavid’s otherworldly season — has led the way, from scoring game-winning goals and delivering rousing speeches in the room, to delivering cross checks and goading goaltenders into fights.
He’s the player people love to hate, and he’s building a following of haters as he pushes the Panthers along in the postseason.
And even though the person who’s been most influential in Matthew’s career isn’t talking, others are. The Athletic spoke with a dozen people who for years have tracked Tkachuk’s brand of hockey — he’s a highly skilled agitator (a modest 6-2, 201 pounds) who opponents hate to play against.
Keith — known as ‘Walt,’ a nickname given to him by Winnipeg Jets teammate Eddie Olczyk because his surname was so similar to former Ranger Walter Tkaczuk — was traded to the Blues in 2001. Matthew, only 3 years old at the time, would start playing hockey with a youth program in St. Louis. Let’s just say he wasn’t a phenom.
Chantal Tkachuk, Matthew’s mom: They thought they were getting this ringer of a kid. We went to his first game and he was terrible. He was by far the worst player on the ice.
But that wouldn’t last long. Tkachuk improved steadily, adding a diverse skillset, and working through minor hockey, the U.S. national team program and the Ontario Hockey League.
Jimmy O’Brien, longtime family friend, owns OB Clark’s bar in St. Louis: They had a goal in their backyard, and 50 pucks would be lying in the driveway. Anytime you pulled up to the back of the house, you had to watch from running over the pucks because the driveway was littered with them.
Jon Benne, longtime family friend and strength trainer: I used to take wrist shots at him, and he’d knock them into the net. So when I see him tip a goal in now, I’ve seen that a million times.
Jordan Janes, St. Louis Junior Blues coach (2009-10): Matthew would do some of these between-the-legs (moves) before anybody was doing that. I would always look over at Keith and smile because in my mind I’m thinking, “Holy s— ,” like this is incredible that a 14-year-old is doing this. But you could tell that Keith, who was a “go to the net hard” type of guy, it drove him crazy.
O’Brien: His father told him, “If you ever do that stuff in a game and it doesn’t work, you won’t get off the bench.”
Taryn Tkachuk, sister: He’s not going to do that stuff just to do it. The through-the-legs goal against Nashville, he was like, “There was no way I could’ve shot that regularly.” He practiced that all growing up, so he knows he’s going to be able to do it.
Rob Simpson, assistant general manager of the London Knights: He would try new things all the time. It speaks to how smart a player he is. He was always trying to be creative in different ways to produce or make plays based on what he is seeing against defenders or what they’ve done against him before. He’s always been a creative, out-of-the-box thinker.
There are elements of Tkachuk’s game that can be traced back to the fact that he is Keith Tkachuk’s son.
Don Granato, Tkachuk’s coach with the U.S. National Team Development Program (2013-15): I think you can give some credit to — if not genetics, then just being around his father over the years.
Chantal Tkachuk: When Keith was still playing, they got to go down to the rink, skate after practice. Some of the players would play around with them.
O’Brien: He was a rink rat. He was always hanging around his dad, always going to his practices.
Barret Jackman, Blues defenseman (2002-15): I remember the coaches would have to come by and say, “Hey Walt, practice was supposed to start 10 minutes ago. Can you get Matthew off the ice?”
Benne: Matthew would be sitting on the bench the whole practice, and Keith would come over and say, “Watch T.J. Oshie. Watch how he goes into that corner and comes out.” Matthew would just be sitting there with a helmet on, just absorbing it all.
O’Brien: It’s hard to get a better education in the hockey world than sitting there with professionals and watching them at a young age.
Chantal Tkachuk: Every night, we always watched hockey. The boys would get up before school and the first thing they would do is turn on NHL Network.
Taryn Tkachuk: That was the only thing we really watched on TV. We never really watched other shows on Disney channel.
Chantal Tkachuk: Keith retired in 2010 and stepped away from his career and took almost five years off. In that time, he totally devoted all his time to youth hockey. That happened to align with the most important developmental years of the boys’ lives.
Janes: Keith knew what it took to get there. He demanded a work ethic out of his boys. Goals or not, assists or not, he just wanted to see you work. If you worked, Keith was happy. He knew if you did that, everything else would come.
O’Brien: One of Walt’s favorite things to say is, “Hey, you didn’t win? Play better!”
Taryn Tkachuk: Oh, he says it all the time. If someone didn’t play as well and maybe they’re complaining, like, “The ref did this or that,” or, “The other team wasn’t letting me do this,” my dad is just like, “Play better!” Nothing else. It’s just “Play better!”
Janes: That quote is the most Keith quote I’ve ever heard.
Growing up, Matthew was always competing with his brother Brady (23), and sister Taryn (20). Whether it was roller hockey, basketball or a made-up game they called “trampoline football.”
Benne: Matthew, Brady and Taryn would be on the trampoline, which was enclosed, and I would throw the football in the air as high as I could into the trampoline. It became an MMA wrestling match to see who got the football.
Taryn Tkachuk: I don’t even know how the game got made up. I just remember it being very physical. Literally whoever had the ball, you were about to get decked.
O’Brien: We were playing a two-on-two basketball game, and there were some of the most violent fouls you’ll ever see in your life. I had a bloody nose when we were done.
Taryn Tkachuk: If we were playing basketball, Matthew would never let me just go in for an easy layup. Of course he was going to foul me.
Jackman: I remember during one of the lockouts, Matthew was 15 at the time, and he skated with some of the NHL guys. I went into the corner with him, thinking I was going to play him hard. He tried to reverse hit me, and then he came out of the corner with the puck on his stick. He didn’t back down, even at 15, and I was in my early 30s.
Chantal Tkachuk: The most somebody hates to lose, that would be him.
Tkachuk committed to play at the USA Hockey National Team Development Program a few years before his first season there. But, at 16 years old, there was a learning curve playing with the national team and in the USHL, an under-20 league. In his first USHL season, he scored only 17 points in 33 games. He would double that production one year later in fewer games.
Granato: We knew of his talent, but in his first year, his production wasn’t there.
Nick Fohr, U.S. NTDP associate coach (2013-15): He wouldn’t shoot it. He literally wanted to show off those hands all the time.
Granato: I would tease him a bit. I’d say, “Hey Matthew, do you like to score?” And he’d say, “Yeah.” And I’d say, “No, you like to stickhandle.” He was so good at it, but I needed him to see that he wasn’t going to be that up-and-down-the-rink player.
Fohr: He wanted to have that agitator piece to him because it was kind of ingrained into him at that point, but he wasn’t big enough or strong enough to do any of that stuff at 16 years old.
Chantal Tkachuk: It was the second year in the program. That was the point where we thought he could make it.
Fohr: He played most of his second year with Auston Matthews and Jack Roslovic, which was an unreal line. Auston was the marked man, and Matthew — after being around his dad — was like, well, “Auston is my center, nobody is touching him.” And he started to become that guy. Any little scrum, he was right in the middle of it to make sure that his teammates were taken care of.
Granato: By the midpoint of the second year, he was playing just like he plays in the NHL right now. He was great in the same areas of the ice, great in the same ways.
In the 2016 Memorial Cup Final, the London Knights were in overtime against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. Tkachuk, in his first (and only) season in the OHL, took the puck up the left side, toe-dragged around a defender and scored the game-winning goal.
Aaron Berisha, London Knights teammate: At first, it looked like he was on a harmless rush.
Simpson: Matthew could always elevate at the right times.
Robert Thomas, Knights teammate (2015-16), and family friend: We always joked that Christian Dvorak actually tipped it, but obviously Matthew got all the credit for it. Just a big-time player making a big-time play.
Simpson: It’s not just by coincidence that he’s big in the right moments. He puts in the work.
Fohr: He’s in those moments because it’s just who he is. You saw it on the overtime goal against Boston. He knows somebody’s got to go in there and get the puck, somebody’s got to go screen the goalie.
Simpson: He wasn’t the one who shot it in the net, but if he didn’t have the sense and savvy to pop out and screen the goalie, it doesn’t go in.
Fohr: It’s no surprise that you see him do it in overtime in Game 7 because he does it every shift, every game.
Janes: The way Matthew was (growing up) and the way he is today, he will do what it takes for his team to win a hockey game. Period.
Because of his ability to stir up drama on the ice and (at times) cross the line, Tkachuk is one of the most polarizing players in the league.
Fohr: He’s that guy that everybody hates unless he’s on your team.
Benne: I don’t think Matthew came into the league fearing anybody. He just played with that edge, like, “I’m here, I’ve arrived, and look out!”
Granato: He could stoke a situation and get it stoked and get everybody’s emotions running on overdrive. And then, even in a highly emotional state that he stirred up, he will execute where many, many skilled players cannot.
Fohr: If he’s agitated somebody somehow, now a little bit of their focus is on Matthew and it takes just a little bit of focus off what they’re good at and impacts so much of the game.
Granato: It’s like a diversionary tactic, and a highly effective skill that he brings. He’s always ready to score the goal after he disrupts the situation, where other guys just want to take his head off. He never loses sight of, OK, while you’re trying to do that, I’m going to be scoring a goal.
Benne: He’s just going to play hard. He’s going to hit you, and he expects to get hit himself. If you watch that game against Toronto, he hammered two guys, and then he got hammered. Not whining, that’s the way the game goes. That’s the way he plays. He’s pretty fearless out there, but I think he plays right on the line. That’s where he wants to be.
Thomas: It was in full force in London. He’d always find himself mixing it up. He’s feisty and he’s got all the skill in the world. Some people just have it, and he definitely has it.
Berisha: It’s funny when people play against him and say, “Man, I hate playing against him, he seems terrible.” He’s actually one of the best guys ever.
Taryn Tkachuk: Matthew has this switch. Off the ice, he’s a completely different person: super nice, super fun. Once he steps on the ice, the switch just goes off and he puts on these different goggles and just has this compete level that you don’t even know how to explain.
The most common ways to describe Tkachuk: He’s a throwback. He’s a unicorn. He’s just like Keith … and maybe better.
Eddie Olczyk, TNT analyst, former teammate of Keith (1991-96): You see (Matthew) and it’s like turning back the clock 25, 30 years to when we played with each other in Winnipeg.
O’Brien: Walt played in an extremely physical era, and the way Matthew plays is refreshing because it’s a throwback to how it was all the time.
Janes: One thing Keith taught these boys at a young age was, if you want to score, you’ve got to be around the net. They got that right from Keith. They just took it a step further as far as their skillset goes.
Fohr: It’s just a place he’s not afraid to go to. Some players are. They don’t want to go there because it’s a hard area to play in because the D are big and strong. There’s an art to getting there and doing it the right way and Matthew has mastered it.
O’Brien: When Walt was playing, you’d see a big guy out there and you wouldn’t think a guy like that has deft hands. But Walt had sick hands, especially tipping pucks. And that’s one of Matthew’s strengths, too.
Olczyk: Matthew will make a play and you go, “Well, there’s Walt.” It’s eerie, but it’s not surprising that the boys are a chip off the old block.
Chantal Tkachuk: To this day, they tease me because skating has always been Matthew’s deficiency, so they make fun of the fact that I taught him how to skate. Keith will take credit for everything else.
Granato: Matthew plays the same kind of style as his dad. He just does it with more talent.
Fohr: To be a thorn in the side of the opponents and then have that elite ability on top of it, that’s pretty special.
Simpson: It’s very hard to find hockey sense that is that elite but also comes with the poise to make the play when it matters most.
Taryn Tkachuk: He’s literally doing every single aspect of what different players bring in a hockey game. It just makes him so unique.
Benne: Matthew doesn’t care what the media writes about him. Matthew doesn’t care if the fans boo him. Boston is going to hate him now, and Toronto is going to hate him after this series. But that’s what drives him. He wants to perform. He wants to put on a show. But more important than anything, he just wants to win.

Unrequested Assist
Tumblr media
Summary - A crowded Chicago bar on a Friday night was the last place Hailey wanted to be but she had promised Vanessa. And the guy that kept trying to hit on her when she clearly wasn’t interested just added to her regret of agreeing to go out.
Until a stranger interrupts and offers her the most welcome unrequested assist, maybe the night could still turn around after all. AO3 Link
This guy could not take a hint, Hailey thought as she pulled her body back as far away from him as she could. She was somewhat limited by the busyness of the bar but still, anyone with two brain cells to rub together should understand that she did not want to be chatted up tonight. In fact, she didn’t even want to be here. But Vanessa had insisted and she had already bailed on her roommate more times than she was able to count in the last few weeks - grad school was far more intense than Hailey had anticipated.
So here she was, in an overcrowded, overpriced bar in downtown Chicago on a Friday night - the exact ingredients that would lead to a hurt head, sticky shoes and possible regrets the next morning. But Vanessa seemed happy. She was currently dancing with a black guy whose broad shoulders meant he took up enough space for almost two people and Vanessa was doing her best to rub her hands up and down every inch of them. He looked familiar but Hailey couldn’t quite place him, maybe he was someone from school? Ken? Keith? Names and faces were not her forte but the man in question looked just as happy with his choice of dancing partner as Vanessa did.
‘So do you come here often?’ Hailey audibly groaned at the awful attempt at a chat up line. The sweaty guy who was in desperate need of a shower was clearly inept at reading body language. She was about to shift another inch to the left before realising that would mean she would end up on her arse as she was currently sitting on the tiniest sliver of the bar stool.
Feigning deafness, it was loud in here after all, Hailey took another sip of her beer and kept her gaze firmly ahead. Maybe he’d just get bored and leave her the hell alone.
It wasn’t that Hailey didn’t like to be flirted with and for sure with the right guy at the right time, she was all up for it. But tonight was not that.
It had only been 6 weeks since she had broken up with Garrett. Or more accurately, since he had walked out of their shared apartment together and left her alone.
She had thought he was it. The person she was going to spend the rest of her life with. She had thanked her lucky stars that on her first day at Law School, she had sat next to him in class, he had complimented her Bears jersey and she had never had to go through the trials and tribulations of modern day dating. They had fallen in love quickly, Garrett uttering the 3 magic words just 2 months in and Hailey echoing them immediately.
After their first year of school had ended, they had decided to get an apartment together and Hailey had assumed the next step in their relationship would be a ring on her finger and a trip to city hall, neither wanting the big white wedding you saw in the magazines. They had discussed it all, how many kids they wanted (2), if they wanted a cat or a dog (a dog), if they wanted to live in the city or move to the suburbs (city until the kids were a little older than out to the suburbs to benefit from the better schools). And yet none of that had happened.
He had left her. Alone. With a two bedroom apartment she already struggled to pay half the rent for. Luckily her only other friend at school, a bright spunky girl by the name of Vanessa, had also needed somewhere to stay and she had moved in the same week and relieved some of the burden, at least the financial burden, of being newly single.
He had uttered little to no explanation, just saying he didn’t feel the same about her anymore and needed his space. What kind of shit-man-brain excuse was that, Vanessa had said when Hailey had replayed the events to her.
A tiny part of Hailey was thankful, thankful he had ended it if he truly didn’t feel that way about her anymore. As much as she wanted to marry him, have his children and spend the rest of her life at his side, she didn’t want to end up in a loveless marriage. She was a child of one of those and it was a painful experience for all involved.
Vanessa had done all she could the past few weeks to bring Hailey back to her old self and not the miserable version who only wore oversized hoodies, ate copious amounts of cheese straight from the packet and moped around the apartment, all her spark having vanished. And Hailey loved her for it. Even if at this exact moment in time she was having strongly mixed feelings as the foul smelling breath of her wanna be date breezed past her face.
‘You deaf girl? I was talking to you?’ He said, his previously calm and even sweet tone being replaced with something far more angry. It made the hairs on Hailey’s arms stand on end.
‘I think she heard perfectly well, pal, my girl just doesn’t want to talk to you,’ a honey smooth voice entered the conversation and a heavy arm wrapped around her shoulders. For a brief second Hailey panicked, a stranger was touching her without her permission and she most certainly was not okay with it. But just as she was about to shrug him off and make a swift exit, grabbing Vanessa as she did, the greasy guy apologised quickly and moved away.
‘Sorry for the unrequested assist,’ her saviour said, removing his arm as quickly as he had placed it there. ‘You just seemed fiercely uninterested and the idiot couldn’t take the hint.’
Hailey turned around to face him and nearly spat out her drink, which would have been a shame on multiple accounts. Firstly, his white t-shirt would have paid the price with a hideous beer stain, and secondly, he was gorgeous. As in teen movie star, hang a poster on your bedroom wall and kiss it every night before bed gorgeous. It took all of Hailey’s jaw muscles to stop her mouth from hanging open as she took him in.
He was tall, Hailey would peg him at just over 6 foot tall if she had to guess. Well built, but not huge. Like he knew which weights to lift in the gym to make him look good but not out of proportion. His dark hair was slicked back into a smart hairstyle, one appropriate for a police officer or a teacher but Hailey could see thanks to the heat of their current location, it had started to reveal its natural curl. But it was his eyes that were making her lose her cool. They were emerald green, dark and bright at the same time and she knew if she looked at them for any longer she might be tempted to say something she would regret in the morning.
‘No,’ Hailey said, more to herself but when the strangers faced looked puzzled she shook her head lightly and corrected herself. ‘What I meant to say is thank you, for the assist,’ she clarified.
‘You’re welcome,’ he said and Hailey added his smile to the reasons this man was far too beautiful to comprehend. If she had had more than one beer tonight she might blame her current lack of cohesive thoughts on that, but she hadn’t, so she couldn’t. It was all him that was making her tongue tied.
‘Can I buy you a drink to say thanks?’ She asked when she realised she hadn’t said anything for at least 45 seconds. Way to make things awkward, Hailey, she scolded herself.
‘I’m not one to say no when a pretty girl offers to buy me a drink,’ he said, slightly cheekily but it was working for him.
‘A beer okay?’ She asked, flagging down the nearest barman.
‘Perfect,’ he said with a little wink and Hailey felt her stomach tighten. Cheekiness and winking were not usually two characteristics that made her want to drag a man into the back and have her way with him. But on this guy, if they weren’t in a public place and she didn’t have an early start at the restaurant tomorrow, she would be climbing him right now instead of offering him a drink.
Handing him the drink over the bar, she did her best not to spill it all over him, although the condensation sliding down the bottle made that task a little trickier.
‘So…’ Hailey said, leaving a pause for the stranger to add his name.
‘Jay,’ he said, taking a sip of his beer, never taking his eyes off her as he did so.
‘So Jay, what brings you here on this glorious Friday night?’ She asked, aware it was a bit of a cheesy line but he didn’t seem to mind judging by the grin on his face.
‘Well…’ he matched her by leaving a gap in which she added her name. ‘Well Hailey, my brother asked me, or more like dragged me along but he blew me off as soon as his girl texted him. I was about to head off before, no fun letting off steam by yourself.’
‘What steam are you letting off?’ Hailey asked, intrigued by the man in front of her. They were having to speak a little loudly to hear each other over the music, but the loud beat wasn’t bothering her as much as it had been a moment ago.
‘New job,’ Jay shrugged lightly. ‘New sergeant is hard work and I’m not sure where I stand.’
‘Sergeant?’
‘I’m a cop.’
‘Oh,’ Hailey had let out the sound before she could stop herself and she saw the change in Jay’s features almost immediately.
‘Not a fan of the police?’ He asked, the flirty edge to his voice had vanished and Hailey wondered how many times he had had this same conversation and how many people had simply shut down after hearing his profession.
‘Not that,’ she shook her head quickly. ‘Just not a fan of coincidences.’ When Jay raised an eyebrow in question she added, ‘I’m a grad student at law school.’
The sparkle returned to Jay’s eyes almost immediately, ‘so if I have any law related queries on the job, I can give you a call?’ He smirked.
‘Is that you asking for my number?’ Hailey quipped back.
‘Was it too subtle?’
‘No, I think I got it,’ she smirked. ‘Give me your phone.’
She entered her digits into his phone and saved it - ‘Hailey the Lawyer to be’.
‘Nice,’ he said, noticing the contact name with a grin. Hailey felt her phone vibrate in her pocket as he sent her a text so she had his number too.
‘Do you want to dance?’ He asked after pocketing his phone. ‘Or go somewhere quieter to chat?’
‘Is somewhere quieter to chat, code for back to your place?’ Hailey sassed.
‘I mean, it can be if you want. But I’d also like to continue to get to know you, and we can do that on neutral ground if it makes you more comfortable,’ he said honestly and Hailey was taken aback. It was something men didn’t often consider, the risks associated with being a woman and agreeing to go back to a stranger's place. She was touched that Jay had thought of such a thing, but she was struck by the reasons that he probably had. She could have imagined he had seen some things in his time on the force.
Hailey was comfortable enough with him already, more than she should be for the minimal conversation they had exchanged, but still somewhere public was probably the smarter option.
‘Let me go tell my friend I’m heading off, then you can take me to the diner on Rush. I could go for a plate of curly fries about now,’ she grinned, making a move to get up off the stool but Jay pulled a face at her comment.
‘Curly fries a deal breaker for you?’ She asked.
‘Depends,’ Jay said, ‘Mayo or ketchup?’
‘Ketchup obviously,’ Hailey said, folding her arms over dramatically.
‘Deal is still on the table then Hailey,’ he winked and Hailey felt a warmth spread somewhere below her belt.
‘Perfect,’ she said, getting up to head over towards Vanessa. She wasn’t sure her friend would have noticed if she’d have disappeared anyway, she seemed far too wrapped up in the man she was currently wrapped around. Kieran? Kevin?
——————————————————————————
Picking a booth a couple away from the door, Hailey slid into the seat first and Jay sat opposite. He shifted in his seat slightly, eyes darting around the room uncomfortably.
‘You okay?’ Hailey asked, curious about his sudden change in behaviour.
‘Just not a fan of having my back to the door,’ Jay admitted and Hailey immediately stood up. ‘No, it’s fine,’ he said quickly as she gestured for them to swap.
‘Jay,’ Hailey said firmly. ‘If you’d prefer to face the door, then please face the door.’
‘Thank you,’ he said, a hint of embarrassment crossing his cheeks but Hailey didn’t comment on it. There was clearly a reason behind his request, but not one he openly wanted to talk about and Hailey wasn’t going to pry. Goodness knows she had her own reasons about things she did, and not ones you tended to reveal to someone who was a stranger less than an hour ago.
The conversation flowed easily once they had swapped seats. Stopping only to order a plate of curly fries, Hailey insisting they could share, and a couple of sodas. Jay told her more about his job, how his new role was in one of the specialist units of the Chicago Police Department. Hailey could tell he was proud but was also the kind of person who kept their own accomplishments under wraps. She learnt how he ended up in the police force after enlisting straight out of high school, how his father was never impressed with his son's choice of career. Her heart clenched when he told her how he’d come home from his last tour to help his mom when she got ill. She reached across to rest her hand atop his when his voice caught when talking about his mom.
‘Enough about me,’ he said, clearing his throat. ‘Tell me how you ended up in Law School.’
Hailey didn’t mind the redirect, she imagined he didn’t usually open up to people about losing his mom so young.
‘Well initially it was the plan because it was what my father wanted me to do,’ she said, dipping one of the fries in ketchup before popping it in her mouth. ‘Stupid part of me wanted his approval, I guess I still do,’ she admitted.
‘Why is that stupid?’ Jay asked, ‘Don’t most people want their parents' approval on some level?’
‘I guess,’ she shrugged. ‘We don’t exactly have the best relationship, never have.’
‘Oh,’ Jay said apologetically, ‘I’m sorry for pushing.’ But she waved away his apology with her hand.
‘You didn’t, it’s okay,’ she smiled softly. ‘Luckily I love my course so even though it was originally just because he wanted me to do it. I’m not doing it for him anymore. It’s for me.’ She said proudly. ‘I haven’t even spoken to him in the time since I enrolled.’
‘What kind of law do you want to go into?’ Jay asked, and Hailey smiled, appreciating him not digging further about her father.
‘Family Law,’ Hailey said. ‘Less of the prenup negotiations but helping with child custody issues. People always seem to forget that kids have emotions and opinions in those situations, and I want to make sure they get a voice and are heard. May end up side stepping into child advocacy but we will see how it goes.’
‘That’s a good goal, admirable,’ Jay said with a warm smile.
‘So you’re not one of those cops who hates lawyers?’ She asked with a grin, taking the opportunity to pop a few more of the curly fries into her mouth. This place really did serve the best ones in the city.
‘I mean sure, some get in our way,’ Jay admitted, smirking at her across the booth. ‘But I appreciate those who are looking out for those who can’t look out for themselves, kids or people who get caught on the wrong side of things. Not everyone who breaks the law does it out of choice - a lot of cops forget that.’
‘Sounds like we’ve both got our reasons,’ she said, noticing that his comment seemed more specific than a broad generalisation.
‘I had a friend once, had a tough time integrating back into civilian life when he left the army,’ Jay began, and taking a deep breath he continued. ‘He got mixed up with some bad stuff when he got back, but it wasn’t as black and white as right and wrong. Stuff happens overseas, stuff that affects you, even when you’re back home, and Mouse really suffered with it. I channelled it one way, and he went another - doesn’t mean he wanted to be where he ended up.’
‘I got him on side in the end, signed him as a CI and now his record is clear. But it could just have easily been a black mark against him his entire life, a shadow following him around reminding of the times he made a mistake.’ Hailey was taken aback how honest he was being, but she appreciated it. Suddenly his actions tonight made a bit more sense, helping people in trouble was in his nature, be it a friend or a stranger, he wanted to help if he could.
‘He’s lucky to have a friend like you,’ she mused out loud.
‘I’m lucky to have him,’ Jay said quietly, ‘not sure I’d have made it home if I didn’t.’
It was raw and honest.
‘Got to keep hold of the good friends,’ Hailey said offhandedly.
‘That girl you were with at the club, she one of those friends?’ Jay asked, taking a long draft from his drink.
‘Yeah, that’s Vanessa,’ Hailey smiled as she thought of her friend. ‘She’s my ride or die. Knows me better than I know myself, and won’t let me forget it.’ She chuckled.
‘Excuse me dears, I need to cash up, do you mind?’ The kind faced waitress who had brought them their food earlier appeared with their cheque in her hand.
‘Of course not,’ Hailey said, reaching into her pocket for her bank card.
‘I’ll get it,’ Jay said, handing over a couple of notes which Hailey knew would more than cover their total with enough for the inconvenience of them being the last ones in the empty diner.
‘I can pay,’ Hailey said but Jay shook his head lightly.
‘I know you can, but I’d like it if I could treat you,’ he said honestly.
‘Can’t say no to that deary,’ the waitress said with a smile and a wink before she headed back to the cash register.
‘Thank you,’ she said warmly, and she meant it.
‘I can walk you back to yours?’ Jay asked as they got ready to leave, they had already overstayed their welcome and the waitress was clearly ready to go home for the night.
‘That would be appreciated,’ she said as they headed towards the door, throwing an additional thank you to the waitress as they walked out.
Hailey’s apartment was only a couple of blocks from the diner, hence why she knew it served the best curly fries - she was a regular. They strolled together, pleasant conversation easily flowing between them as their arms brushed together with more and more frequency as they got closer to her building.
‘This is me,’ she said, a hint of reluctance to leave the situation in her voice.
‘Well, thank you for a lovely evening Hailey,’ Jay said, taking a small step forward, letting his fingers brush against hers.
‘Ditto,’ Hailey breathed, taking a step forward herself and linking her fingers with his.
She didn’t know who made the first move, she had been intending to but he might have gotten there first. It didn’t matter though, his lips were on hers and their bodies were flush together. It wasn’t an awkward first kiss with clashes of teeth and bumping heads, it was as if she had been kissing him her entire life. Her lips melded to his perfectly and when he softly ran his tongue across the seam of her lips, she opened them willingly, letting their tongues dance together. Her fingers tangled into his hair, keeping his mouth firmly on hers.
His own hands had found a place on her waist, one snaking its way across her back, his palm large against her petite frame, the other brushing against a sliver of bare skin between her top and jeans.
Remembering suddenly they were standing on a public sidewalk, she pulled back slightly, looking up at him through her lashes. His lips were swollen and his hair was messed up thanks to her musings.
‘I’d like to see you again,’ he said quietly, his mouth only inches from hers. ‘If you’d like that.’
‘I would like that,’ she said, letting her eyes drift down to his lips again and pressing up her tiptoes to place a chaste kiss against his lips.
‘I’ll call you tomorrow?’ Jay breathed out when she pulled back a second time.
‘I look forward to it,’ she said, backing up towards her door, keeping their fingers linked for as long as she could before they fell apart. She smiled as she pulled out her key card and let herself into her building, glancing back over her shoulder to see Jay running a hand through his hair, a smile still tugging at his cheeks too. She gave him a little wave as she headed towards the elevator.
It wasn’t the way Hailey had thought her evening would pan out. But sometimes life throws you a curveball. And sometimes that curveball is a handsome police officer who appears with an unrequested assist and the evening turns into something you’d never expected but wouldn’t have changed for anything.

currently on season 2 episode 11 of one tree hill and here are my thoughts so far:
first of all, haley is getting on my nerves just a tad bit. i feel like she’s acting a bit more paranoid due to the fact that she cheated on nathan with chris and haven’t told him about it. she’s projecting her feelings and lashing out on her sister, taylor, which taylor isn’t the best at all, but you can tell she loves hailey even through her own grievances (i.e. getting kicked out of school).
JAKE AND PEYTON ARE SOOOOO CUTE. AHHH. okay, honestly jake has been one of my favorite characters in this entire series (outside of karen and keith). the fact that jake and peyton find peace and comfort within each other especially with what they’re going through just really shows how beautiful friendships can be. i do think they have romantic feelings for each other, but both are scared to act on them.

anna coming out to lucas was #shocking. BUT, i admire and honestly am so surprised at the representation of gay women on a 2000s teen tv show given the stereotypes and realities that lgbtq+ folks went through back then. representation matters and the fact that lucas wasn’t homophobic and supported her made my love for his character spike 1000 points.
Tumblr media
dan. you fucker. i hate him. the fact that he hired jules all because he was bitter and upset at deb and keith is #weirdo nigga shit. i’ve been praying on his downfall since the first episode. he’s the walking definition of a narcissistic, conniving, son of a b.
jules confessing that she loves keith was cute. lucas looking at her ass like he just seen casper was funny. i will say this portion of the storyline is a bit weird, but i like the direction it’s going in. i do hate that dan is about to try and fuck this up between jules and keith all cause he likes to control shit.
Tumblr media
felix and brooke. felix has something up his sleeve and i really hate him so bad. like the way he treats his sister makes me want to slap the taste out of his freaking mouth. brooke deserves better. brooke deserves lucas. but, lucas is #heartbroken right now so maybe they get together later???
now i’m about to start episode 12! i’m really loving this series so far and i made an oath to myself to catch up on all those 2000s and 2010s shows i missed out in my life due to being in #survivalmode so this is me just catching up and having fun while doing so.
cheers, xoxo.

Swap AU Humans Round One
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below are profiles for characters from my swap AU! Plus transparent PNGs. I've posted them before all crusty and rushed, but here they are in all their glory! These sets will be tagged "swapchara"- mostly so I can find them again later.
In order from top to bottom- Aki, Sammy, Hailey, Amber, Kellen, Keith. Yes, they have different names for a reason. Yes, Sammy/swap!Tai looks slightly different. This is because I forgot to draw his bangs. Everyone else is as they appeared on their original posts.
Spoiler warning for Swap AU itself (this will be a fic), along with Digimon Last Evolution Kizuna. There are links for each of the mons leading to the Bulbapedia or Wikimon page- or in some cases, just an image- of what they're based on (some are obvious, others not so much).
TW for mentions of Digimon-level trauma, mild unreality
EDIT- Mild edit to Keith's height, added an extra line to his bio. Also edited Kellen's age.
PokeDestined
Aki
Gender: Male
Age: 10
Height: 4’4”
Weight: 72 lb.
Crest: Miracles
Japanese Name: Akihiro
Pokemon: Pichumon -> Pikamon -> Raimon -> Pawmotmon -> Zeramon
Aki is a hyperactive young boy born for adventure- at least before coming to the Pocket World and meeting the Pokemon residents. Its fate is now squarely in the hands of him and eight other children. Since then, he’s come to appreciate moments of peace. His optimistic, sunny nature is the perfect shield from whatever troubles him, though his partner Pikamon can see right through it. Aki and Pikamon are sometimes at odds since the latter is so serious, but they’re friends at the end of the day. He has very a large appetite.
Aki dreams of a boy and a “Pikachu” going on an adventure. Even when awake, he remembers this duo as if they were real. He would love to step into that life- if only for a moment- to escape the horrors that dog him on every step of his journey to save the world.
Hailey
Gender: Female
Age: 10
Height: 4’3”
Weight: 70 lb.
Crest: Reliability
Japanese Name: Hiromi
Pokemon: Azurimon -> Psymon -> Goldumon -> Gyaramon -> MegaGyaramon
Hailey is the group’s caretaker- a task she’s well-suited to since she has three younger sisters. Though she has enough determination to overcome foes and enough kindness to soothe small children, she isn’t able to overcome her own self-doubts. Hailey gets exasperated with the antics of her Psymon, who isn’t as “all-powerful” as he claims. But like the other children, she has a close bond with her Pokemon companion.
Hailey dreams and remembers another girl whose anger constantly boils. She, too, has a Pokemon, who she constantly berates for causing mischief. Hailey could never be that cruel! Yet, something about these sensations as natural as her own thoughts. Now, if only she could figure out the truth.
Kellen
Gender: Male
Age: 11
Height: 4’6”
Weight: 75 lb.
Crest: Kindness
Japanese Name: Kenji
Pokemon: Wyanumon -> Eeveemon -> Umbremon -> MegaHoundoomon -> Okidogimon
Kellen is surprisingly mature for his age, helping Hailey care for the group. He usually takes the first night watch. Though he seems distant from his partner Eeveemon, he has trouble clicking with the latter’s goofy personality. He puts on an aloof front held together with string and duct tape. A introspective person, he journeys as much to find himself as to save the world.
Kellen’s mental shield grows weaker because of the dreams and memories that don’t belong to him. The mere possibility he may be someone else is upsetting- let alone a person so brutishly arrogant. But if that person really is “the original one”, is Kellen’s own existence a grave sin?
Digimon Trainers
Sammy
Gender: Male
Age: 11
Height: 4’8”
Weight: 80 lb.
Type Specialty: Fire
Japanese Name: Satoshi
Digimon: Agufry, Leflare, Lavorvo
Sammy set out from his hometown with only Agufry by his side. His goal is to become a Digimon Master. Not even he knows what that means, and he becomes unusually defensive if questioned. He will do anything to help those in need, be they human or Digimon. Though a skilled battler, he has trouble understanding advanced technology. He needs help to use the virtual “ghost lands” where Digimon live. For some strange reason, he frequently encounters legendary Digimon.
Recently, Sammy remembers and dreams about a man and a dinosaur creature. Though his life is dangerous and he frequently experiences great loss, Sammy finds himself drawn to it. His own life has fallen into a routine. To him, these dreams are an adventure he longs to begin.
Amber
Gender: Female
Age: 11
Height: 4’6”
Weight: 74 lb.
Type Specialty: Psychic
Japanese Name: Atsuko
Digimon: Biyodee, Bakoboru, Tapiku
One of Sammy’s traveling companions. Amber is an expert with Psychic-type Digimon, able to understand their feelings better than any other type. She has a short fuse and can easily be pushed to the edge. Though she seems like a mere spitfire, she simply has trouble communicating her feelings. Coming from a family of psychics, yet born without psychic abilities, she struggles to find her place in the world. Thus, she set out with Biyodee on a journey.
Amber noticed strange behavior from both Sammy and her partner Biyodee recently. She isn’t sure of the reason. But she’s reaching her wit’s end with Sammy. Not helping are the dreams of a young woman who lost her beloved companion- dreams which make Amber want to hold Biyodee and never let go.
Keith
Gender: Male
Age: 12
Height: 4’6”
Weight: 82 lb.
Type Specialty: Ice
Japanese Name: Ken
Digimon: Gabello, 40+ others
Keith grew up in the same town as Sammy. He declared himself a Digimon Master long before he ever left home. In actuality, he has no idea who or what he is. To bury his insecurities, he bullies Sammy and searches relentlessly for power. His main Digimon is Gabello- a rare Ice/Fire-type and the crown jewel of his collection. He has forty other Digimon- each stronger than the last, but none able to fill the emotional pit in his heart. He's exactly two inches shorter than Sammy, and doesn't take it lightly when someone points that out.
One night, Keith had a disturbing dream where Gabello was taken from him. Since then, he’s dreamed of a man who looks much like him. He tries to ignore these dreams, as they’re interruptions on his path to power. But that boy and the strange Digimon he calls “Gabumon” seemed so happy together…before that day…
