The B.C. government and the Council of the Haida Nation have signed an agreement officially recognizing Haida Gwaii's Aboriginal title, more than two decades after the nation launched a legal action seeking formal recognition.
The province announced last month that it had reached a proposed deal with the Haida, which Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Minister Murray Rankin called a "foundational step in the reconciliation pathway of Haida Nation and B.C."
On April 6, the nation announced that more than 500 Haida citizens had voted 95 per cent in favour of approving the Gaayhllxid/Gíhlagalgang "Rising Tide" Haida Title Lands Agreement.
"This does not mean that the government is granting us anything. We have always held our inherent rights and title to our lands," Tamara Davidson, a Vancouver regional representative for the Council of the Haida Nation, told CBC News on Sunday.
"We were born knowing this is ours." [...]

The Stand (dir. Christopher Auchter) x VIFF 2024.
NFB's documentary effectively employs its edited-together archival footage from the 1985 dispute over clearcut logging on the island of Haida Gwaii to put things in the proper historical context. How the Haida Nation's blockade stood its ground to prevent the further destruction of its unceded and ancestral land provides viewers with a much-needed history lesson on our past ills and progress moving forward.
Premiering at the 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Northern Lights series at SFU Woodward’s on Oct. 3 and International Village on Oct. 5.

"In a historic “first-of-its-kind” agreement the government of British Colombia has acknowledged the aboriginal ownership of 200 islands off the west coast of Canada.
The owners are the Haida nation, and rather than the Canadian government giving something to a First Nation, the agreement admits that the “Xhaaidlagha Gwaayaai” or the “islands at the end of world,” always belonged to them, a subtle yet powerful difference in the wording of First Nations negotiating.
BC Premier David Eby called the treaty “long overdue” and once signed, will clear the way for half a million hectares (1.3 million acres) of land to be managed by the Haida.
Postal service, shipping lanes, school and community services, private property rights, and local government jurisdiction, will all be unaffected by the agreement, which will essentially outline that the Haida decide what to do with the 200 or so islands and islets.
“We could be facing each other in a courtroom, we could have been fighting each other for years and years, but we chose a different path,” said Minister of Indigenous Relations of BC, Murray Rankin at the signing ceremony, who added that it took creativity and courage to “create a better world for our children.”
Indeed, making the agreement outside the courts of the formal treaty process reflects a vastly different way of negotiating than has been the norm for Canada.
“This agreement won’t only raise all boats here on Haida Gwaii – increase opportunity and prosperity for the Haida people and for the whole community and for the whole province – but it will also be an example and another way for nations – not just in British Columbia, but right across Canada – to have their title recognized,” said Eby.
In other words, by deciding this outside court, Eby and the province of BC hope to set a new standard for how such land title agreements are struck."

Legislation that recognizes the Haida Nation's Aboriginal title over all of Haida Gwaii received royal assent in the B.C. legislature on Thursday.
The Gaayhllxid/Gíihlagalgang "Rising Tide" Haida Title Lands Agreement upholds the nation's right over the land of Haida Gwaii under Section 35 of the Constitution — which affirms the rights of Indigenous people.
"Negotiating the acknowledgement of Haida title with the province of B.C. not only marks a welcome departure from an adversarial court process, but also uplifts the honour of the Crown by resolving the issue through negotiation rather than litigation," said Gaagwiis (Jason Alsop), president of the Council of the Haida Nation, in a release.
"Putting the question of title to rest enables us to embark on building a future with all the peoples of Haida Gwaii based on our relationship to the land and sea." [...]

Picked this up at an antique store today, it's an original pastel drawing. The signature reads McLaughlin. I love how stylish this guy is, especially his staff and wizard robe. I think it's probably from the 70's or 80's. I can tell he's from the northwest, but otherwise don't know enough to recognize the style. If anyone can tell me anything about more it, I'd be grateful!
Edit: I found out the artist is Blackfoot, and actually pretty well known, she died in 1987. So now I'd say maybe 60's or 70's...this dude doesn't look Blackfoot to me, so he's still a mystery.
