For #Crustmas on #Woodensday:
gamisida długwe' (#Crab Puppet) Kwakwaka'wakw, British Columbia, Canada, before 1952 Wood, paint, 11.4 cm x 22.9 cm x 67.9 cm UBC Museum of Anthropology A6362
“These articulated characters are known as dług̱we’ treasures (as are the theatrical dances in which they appear). The Kwakwaka’wakw have a history of puppetry related to their ceremonial feasts. The winter potlatches are known for their spectacular performances, suffused with cultural teachings and supernatural content, such as the coming of Winalagalis, the supernatural warrior. Dances and songs associated with Winalagalis include the tuxw’id, which is performed by women, who have the power and rights to make the dług̱we’ treasures (puppets) come to life. For instance, a tuxw’id dancer could summon a crustacean to life, on invisible cords, in the flickering firelight.”

Just finished this pic!!! Not entirely happy with the shading, but I don't usually do much beyond flats, so I wanted to try doing more shading this time. Very happy with how the line art came out though! Tumblr has greatly crunched the quality as usual, so please click on the picture lol.
Line art and pose rec pic under the cut.

Herons stacked on top of each other
We saw a lot of herons on our recent camping trip and Micah, my brother-in-law, was saying something about the herons that I can't remember now, but in the moment my brain filled in the rest of his sentence with "Herons stacked on top of each other," so that's what I painted while we were camping, with the background based on how it actually looked that first evening (and often the rest of the time; tho this photo is from the next morning when the fog had receded more).

ABC's Reconstituted Panel
Lyle Wilson
from the website: Early in my career there were just a few experienced Pacific Northwest Coast (PNC) artists and they often used the metaphor of the western alphabet — advising young PNC artists to learn the ABC’s of PNC two-dimensional art: the Ovoid, U-shape and connective Formline.
NUGWA (I/me) decided to make that advice into a “visual reality” by using classic Ovoids, U-shapes and Formlines, to make strange animals that contort themselves into the shapes of the western alphabet and numbers.
So in 1984 NUGWA “made” an early version — a limited-edition of 50 serigraphs of the PNC alphabet and numbers. However during the printing process the entire edition was damaged. Although NUGWA managed to salvage one print, the rest were cut up to make a few small gift and business cards.
Many years later, in 2011, NUGWA decided to paint a version of the my PNC ABC’s and that how “ABC’s RECONSTITUTED” came about — it’s a blend of tradition and modern “advice”.

[Spider of the Four Winds]
(THUNDERWEB)
In Native American cultures, the spider is a powerful and multifaceted symbol that carries various meanings depending on the tribe, region, and context. Often revered for its craftsmanship, creativity, and connection to the natural world, the spider is also seen as a figure of wisdom, balance, and protection.
Geometric shapes are a cornerstone of Native American art, particularly in pottery, weaving, and beadwork. These patterns often include triangles, diamonds, squares, zigzags, spirals, and concentric circles. These designs are usually stylized representations of nature, the cosmos, or spiritual concepts. For example, triangles can represent mountains or arrows, and spirals might symbolize life cycles or the concept of growth and change.Notable Examples: The Navajo and Hopi are known for their intricate geometric patterns in weaving and pottery. The Zuni also create geometric motifs in their pottery and jewelry designs.
The orca (also known as the killer whale) holds deep significance in the cultures of many Native American tribes, especially those from the Pacific Northwest Coast. In these cultures, the orca is a powerful and revered animal, often symbolizing strength, intelligence, leadership, family, and protection. The orca's role in Native American mythology, storytelling, and symbolism can vary somewhat across different tribes, but there are common themes and attributes associated with this majestic creature.
Orcas are frequently depicted in art, totem poles, and ceremonial regalia. As a symbol of power, family, and transformation, they are often incorporated into visual representations of spiritual strength and connection. In some rituals and dances, orca imagery is used to invoke the spirit of the orca as a guide or protector. The totemic use of orcas in Native American cultures, especially in the form of painted designs or carved figures, represents their role as spiritual allies or ancestral guides.

i have soooo much lore in my head surrounding patrick & art and how they grew up… their little quirks… etc…. sigh
i always think of patrick growing up in some giant estate in connecticut or massachusetts (pre!stanford au my beloved……). his family is super powerful. in politics, most likely. idk his dad mayb is a federal prosecutor or something and his brother + cousins + uncles are in politics. running for congress and senate etc. like the kennedys. i also imagine them having like a summer home in the hamptons or mayb deleware or somewhere random. mayb its his grandparents.
art… he’s less figured out for me. i looove midwest art. growing up primarily being raised by his grandma in her little farmhouse. mayb his mom died. his dad is kinda evil. whatevs. i also have thought about like. pacific northwest art. or northern california art. colorado art. nebraska!!!!!!!hmmmmm. i think they’re super catholic….. (catholic trauma midwest art… he’s so ethel cain kinda). this might be kinda unpopular but i think of his family as like. fairly middle class. mayb his mom’s parents were loaded (hence why he goes to boarding school. they pay) but they don’t really talk to him anymore after his mom died…… he lives w his dad’s mom in her modest little house. either a farmhouse or a little craftsman. i put too much thought into this…:(
tashi i haven’t thought about as much but. she’s def giving like socal. or texas!!!!!!!!! i think her family wasn’t like. super poor and struggling. but they weren’t rich. just average middle class.
lots of ppl headcanon the academy as being in florida… so that’s usually what i think about… but. i love the idea of it being somewhere else. california maybe. only bc i’m a firm firm believer in west coast best coast. anyways. sorry for talking your ear off…………….
NEVER EVER apologize to me pookie <3 u are a delight to have in the inbox <3
Why does Pacific Northwest art also make so much sense to me…….. teenage granola art going to national parks and hiking during his summers at home :((( bringing Lily to his favorite trails he used to hike growing up…. Put me down now lord I’m ready !!!!!!!!!!!
