hiii lovelies! i absolutely love the song die with a smile and felt it fit super well with tua, so this is the outcome. i actually had two separate ending ideas for this fic, so if you'd like me to release the alternate ending (it's a happy ending) lmk in the comments. as usual pls ignore any grammar errors and i hope you enjoy! thank you <3

The Hargreeves Siblings and their families are gathered in the broken down Umbrella Academy. After fighting the giant hybrid monster, Ben and Jennifer, that is consuming everything and everyone in its path, the siblings are trying to come up with a plan of action. 

Five, your husband, has disappeared back to the subway station where he spent several years trapped with you with little hope on finding a way back home. He left in hopes to find something that he might’ve overlooked, a solution to the cleanse. He left you behind to help care towards his injured siblings and in hopes that you could be the brains while he was gone. 

“How the hell do we beat a thing that keeps getting stronger and bigger everytime we try and fight it?” Diego asks in exasperation. The siblings pace the living area trying to figure out how to beat the monster. “It’s only a matter of time before it consumes everything and the world ends…again.” Viktor states matter-of-factly.

At this time, Five blinks into the living room and his eyes immediately finds yours–there’s a look in his eyes of realization and acceptance. You get off the couch and make your way to him, interlocking fingers and giving his hand a comforting squeeze.

“I went back to the subway station and had a very long and strange conversation with me…well multiple mes. But anyways, we are the reason why all of this is happening,” Five continues to explain to his siblings how they should have never existed but they do and that they have caused a shattered timeline. “That must’ve been what Ben was trying to show me back at the department store, he showed me the original timeline. He was trying to tell me that maybe, the cleanse isn’t a bad thing.” Viktor says, recalling the serene scene that was the original timeline. 

Five recaptures his siblings’ attention, “We have to let the Durango merge with the Cleanse. It’s the only way to fix the timeline…” “And what happens to us?” “We cease to exist.” Five replies to Diego’s question, leaving everyone in the room too stunned to speak.

“Absolutely not Five,” Your words come out shaky, “There’s got to be another way.” “Yeah! I’m with Y/N. It turns out, I don’t actually like dying all that much.” Klaus says agreeing with you. Five looks at you with hurt in his eyes, he would never willingly leave you but there’s no other way to save the world. “Y/N, I’ve been through every possible outcome, there’s nothing we can do to stop this. My siblings and I should’ve never existed in the first place. We don’t belong here, we never did.” Your eyes well up with tears, “But you guys do belong, you’re my family, you’re my love Five. If you’re not here, I don’t belong in the timeline either.” Five shakes his head at your words.

“What about our families Five? What happens to them if we cease to exist? Diego asks glancing towards to other room where his children reside. “I’m not sure.” Five says defeated while tightening his grip on your hand. The siblings look at each other unsure of what to do. Allison sits up from the couch, still clutching her stomach from her injuries, “What about that train station? Can you bring them there? Y/N could go with them and make sure they’re safe since she’s been to the station before.” Before Five can answer, Claire enters the room, rushing to her mom.

Five brings you to the side of the room for a little bit of privacy. No words are exchanged as he pulls you into his embrace, his face in the crook of your neck, holding you tight as if you would disappear from his arms. You feel your neck dampen, this is your breaking point. Tears stream down your cheeks as you push your face into Five’s chest, trying to get as close to him as possible. Sobs rack your body, you begin to hiccup as your breathing becomes uneven. 

Five tries to pull away to get you to breathe. You sob harder pulling him tighter, “Just hold me for a little while longer. Please Five, just hold me.” Five responds by cradling you in his arms, placing a gentle kiss on you head, “I’m so sorry Y/N. I love you so much. I wish there was another way.”

The Umbrella Academy is a mess of emotions as the siblings say goodbye to their loved ones and accept their fate. You stand with Claire and Lila and Diego’s family waiting for Five to blink you to the subway station. You wave to the siblings that you have grown to know and love so much. Five grabs your hand and blinks the group out of the house. 

“Okay everyone, follow me onto the train, we’re going on a little trip!” You try to put a fake smile on your face to ease the nerves of Diego and Lila’s children. You guide the group onto the train, ensuring that everyone got on before you. After stepping on you turn to face the train door, Five is standing there with a sad smile on his face. The only thing separating you two is a solid yellow line on the platform. The strange announcement that you���ve heard a number of times before goes off over the PA system. You’re heart begins to race, the doors are going to close any second now and this will be the last time you ever see Five. He continues to stare at you.

The doors begin to make noise, signalling that they’re going to close. Your eyes quickly glance between the closing doors and Five. Five’s eyes widen as he realizes what you’re about to do but it’s too late to stop you. Five instead catches you as you stumble into his arms, “What did you just do Y/N?” “I told you earlier Five, you’re my everything. Wherever you go, I’ll follow. If you’re not with me in the original timeline…what’s the point? The world is ending, I want to be next to you.”

Upon your return to the Umbrella Academy, the Hargreeves are shocked to say the least. “Are they safe? Did they make it?” Lila bombards you with questions. You nod in response and she wraps you in her arms, thanking you. “So…what do we do now? Should we say our favorite moments with each other?” Luther asks awkwardly, shifting his weight from foot to foot as nerves surge through his body. Everybody shoots down Luther’s ideas and elects to just sit and wait. 

You and Five are seated on a couch, he holds you tight. He wouldn’t say it but he was scared shitless. You read him like a book and bring your lips to his ear, “It’ll be okay Love. I’m right here with you and I wouldn’t change my decision.” He turns his head to look at you and gives you a kiss that says everything he needs to. 

Suddenly, a shrill screech and crash can be heard outside the house. “You guys! I think he’s coming and I don’t think he’s happy.” Luther calls out while looking at the large monster approaching. Five grips your hand and stands up at the announcement. You and the Hargreeves move away from the window and form a circle on the other side of the living room. The monster hybrid’s tentacle-like appendages bust throught the glass window by the front door first. Then the window by the main stairway. In no time the tentacles were approaching the siblings from every angle.

“Relax and just let it do what it wants.” Five calls out to his siblings as the tentacles begin to reach their feet. Five looks at your intertwined hands and smiles, “I know I was a hardass, but I really do love you guys, as much as you do drive me crazy.” “Ew Five, I know we’re dying or whatever but don’t get all sappy on us now.” Lila says with fake disgust. “Thank you for letting me be in your crazy family. I love you guys so much.” You chime in, a tear slipping down your face. Lila reaches out to grab your left hand. Tears are now streaming down everyones faces as they hold hands with one another. The tentacles now enveloping up to their stomachs and climbing higher and higher.

You turn your head to look at Five and he mirrors your movements. It is now up to your chin and before you world goes dark, you’re able to make out Five’s final three words–said with a smile.

TUA should’ve ended after season 2

i am just so kriffing disappointed in this final season. i am disgusted. steve blackman has absolutely zero regard for these characters, their development, and the story. he has no respect for the ACTORS. he threw the entirety of these past three seasons in the trash in just one season. they had so much opportunity and yet he chose to make it a fetish-filled, scandalous, and completely lazy season.

all the vomitting???????? klaus being force fed marigold (which dare i say might’ve made a good storyline for him IF HE WASNT PIMPED OUT AND THEJN NESRLY BURIED ALIVE????) which in turn made him into an alcoholic???

five and lila????? they scrapped fives motivation of saving his family and keeping them together because of his LOVE FOR THEM, all SO HE COULD HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH LILA????? that is probably the biggest mischaracterization altogether. lila would never cheat on diego. they are married. THEY HAVE CHILDREN TOGETHER. it’s NORMAL to have arguments and trouble in a relationship but by no means does it mean there’s room for affairs as a result. it just makes me mad. ritu has known aidan since he was 15, like this is so nasty.

diego being the stereotypical “bad father” for lack of better words because he apparently has no consideration for his family which is NOT TRUE AND IS A HUGE MISCHARACTERIZATION!!????

luther going back to being the guy that no one really listens to because they feel he has nothing of value to offer (it wasn’t super evident but i noticed it which made me sad bc we made so much progress with his character!)???

allison becoming a single mom whose husband, RAYMOND, walked out on her??? that literally makes no sense for raymond or her, yes allison is a strong and independent character but it feels like it’s just stereotype after stereotype.

viktor becoming a womanizer and LEAVING HIS FAMILY BEHIND! all viktor has ever wanted since childhood is to be apart of his family, and they take that away this season??? makes no sense.

dont even get me started on sparrow ben. i have never liked his character he is wayyyy too much of an asshole, but your saying he can’t have common sense??? they turn him into a criminal who is contaminated by this essence that is meant to end the world and ends up making him insanely attracted to the one consistent mystery in this entire show (jennifer/the jennifer incident) and then throw away the entire plot line to just have them end the world. **and then making him and jennifer overly sexually attracted to each other was just straight up weird, where did that even come from?? i had to skip those scenes because it was so kriffing cringe.

because out of no where, abigail had a change of heart. and reginald is somehow one of the only mentally stable characters this season which is new!??? jean and gene were completely and utterly useless. they had no point, the only five i liked in this season is brisket, newspaper, drunk, and season one five. CIA five can leave.

one of the only redeemable moments of this season is the flashback of our brellies. that was good. there were other parts that i liked but that is first that comes to mind. **and the birthday party scene where they reunite. very cute and family vibes. sucks they couldn’t all be together because viktor was straight up kidnapped by some crazy.

and then the subway to different timelines. that could’ve been such a freaking awesome idea and would’ve made a great plot device IF THERE WASN’T ONLY SIX EPISODES AND SOMEONE ELSE WAS PUT IN CHARGE OF WRITING. like why are five and lila the only ones who are aware of this?? this couldn’t have been utilized earlier?? also can we talk more about how ben is an asshole, people focus too much on the attractive aspect of his character (which no offense, i see no appeal to bc the personality is just awful—NO HATE TO JUSTIN H M, he’s fantastic it’s just we did not lose brelly ben for this), like he force fed/tricked EVERYONE into consuming the janky marigold. except klaus because he’s the only smart one there. also good on him for trying maintain sobriety. but still. that is so messed up???? if he had never given anyone the marigold, everything could’ve been fine. they could’ve lived long happy lives in this timeline reggie made.

and then they had david cross, pitch perfect 2 ref, iconic man, play an irrelevant character. i’m so mad. wasted potential right there.

AND! it’s a crime that there is no family dance montage/scene like past seasons. it hurts. **oh and also there being like zero MCR songs is such a slap in the face because if the producers and directors actually listened to the fans opinions and ideas every once in a while, they would know that we’ve been hoping for an MCR song to be included as an homage/reference to Gerard Way.

and then that ending. where they just accept death???? choosing that the world is better off without them??? that is such a lazy end. if they had ten episodes and let gerard way have some sort of say in the writing/directing process, we could’ve had something so good. something so creative and fun and fulfilling. but no. they die and come back as marigolds. **which i personally really liked, out of everything this season i’m not sure why so many people hate the fact they kind of turned into flowers 😭😭 the ending sucked cause it’s so obvious it wasn’t given much thought but it was still sad and seeing the eight marigolds was sweet and gave closure in a sense. as much as it could i guess. **also, the farthest marigold is ben regardless bc brelly ben is dead and sparrow ben doesn’t really consider the brellies as his family. it is not five or klaus or whoever, it is ben. it has to be imo. the two flowers closest together are lila and diego. fight me.**

another thing, all the bad guys having a happy ending? irks me. like they were iconic, but why them and not the brellies? **(while i still agree with the idea of why couldn’t the brellies be happy too, i actually liked the fact that the main villains or side characters had completely different lives had the umbrella academy never existed. like that’s actually crazy sad and really interesting. also two things: is detective patch in that last scene? i’m not sure if she is. and second: why is grace like alive? like she would still be alive, but she was alive in the sixties, so wouldn’t she be like super old by that point in time?? why is she still young? and having kids? the inconsistency is realll)** also i liked the version of i think we’re alone now they used but i think it could’ve been better if they used the tiffany version again 😞

anyway—thank you for reading my rant because i am just so baffled by how horrible this season was. i feel so bad for the cast because even they knew that this season would not be it. that not one true fan of TUA would like it. and it’s sad because this has been such a huge part of their lives and careers as actors. so they did great with what they were given and for that they have my respect.

Who’s your favorite TUA character?

I’ve done been asked about my hyperfixation‼️

Because I’m incapable of being normal about Umbrella Academy rn, I’m going to rate all the Hargreeves siblings by way of choosing a favorite.

Going from least favorite to favorite (I like them all, but some are more precious than others):

7. Allison. Don't get me wrong, I love all of the siblings. For me, what really makes the media is the characters, and all of the Umbrella Academy characters are unique, endearing, yet flawed. That being said, Allison is the one I connect with the least, and also after season 3... well...

6. Diego. He would be higher, but I didn't really start to like him until season 2. Like Allison, Diego's one of the ones I connect with the least, although I do find his character arcs very compelling (and heartbreaking, to be honest).

5. Luther. Luther is very much back and forth for me. Like, he's such an idiot towards the end of season 1, but AMAZING in season 3. Honestly, I just love the trope of a big blond himbo, so even if Luther is as dumb as rocks, he's so endearing.

4. Viktor. He explodes things. He's just three apples tall. Viktor is just a little guy, and I've been his firm supporter since season 1. (Like, my sister keeps dissing him and I'm ready to throw hands). Plus, I really love Elliot Page, so like... Viktor, ya know?

3. Ben. I don't wanna let my men-loving show, but like, Ben's gorgeous. He's so hot. Ahem, anyway-- I love the whole concept of him being Klaus's conscience and voice of reason (even if Klaus never listens) and the only time I cried while watching this show was at one of his scenes. That being said, I don't really like Sparrow!Ben. I won't count him out quite yet though, we still have season 4.

2. Klaus. He's hilarious. He's sexy trash. He's wife material. Klaus is very much a close second when it comes to my favorite character, if only for the fact that he never irritates me. All of the other characters (except maybe Five) have moments where I'm screaming at the screen because they're so dumb (affectionate) but... never Klaus. Live love Klaus. He's great.

1. Five. I. Fucking. LOVE. Five. Which sure that's probably predictable, he's a fan favorite, but he's freaking hilarious, one of the deeper characters in the show (in my opinion), and his actor does a brilliant job with all of his quirks and mannerisms. Plus I hardcore headcanon him as either ace or aroace, but maybe I'm just projecting. But anyway, he's the new blorbo consuming my brain, and when I attend my first convention this summer (yay me!) I really want to cosplay him.

I'm so sorry for how rambly this was. If you can't tell, I'm very hyperfixated rn, and my sister hasn't finished season 3 yet so I'm practically vibrating with spoilers. I feel a little awkward being so obsessed with it cuz the fandom seems to be dead, for the most part, but hey-- I'm having fun. And that's what matters, right?

Paramount+ (2024)

In a newly released ad for Paramount+—the streaming service formerly known as CBS All Access—the company continues the odd storyline that all the various characters and stars of different Paramount-owned franchises are climbing the giant mountain seen in the company’s famous logo. This time, a group consisting of Drew Barrymore, Sir Patrick Stewart, Halo’s Master Chief, Arnold, Lt. Dangle from Reno 911!, and Knuckles, among others, are trying to scale a large cliff wall to reach…I don’t know, the next commercial. Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is trying to toss a grappling hook up the cliff wall to give everyone a way up the mountain. But he can’t do it. That’s when Patrick Stewart recommends tying the rope to Arnold—who has a football-shaped head—and tossing the animated child at the mountain. At this point, Stewart takes off his jacket to reveal an old-timey football costume and helmet and tells Drew Barrymore to shut up, and Creed starts playing “Can You Take Me Higher.” Folks, I’m not making any of this up. This is a real ad. I feel like I need to step in here and remind you all of that fact. Anyway, eventually Stewart chucks Arnold, after kissing his head softly, up the mountain and…(spoilers!) fails. Arnold slams into the rockface, likely crushing every one of his cartoon bones in the process, and the group hits upon the next beloved character to attempt throwing at the cliff. Some might find this ad funny. And I’ll fully admit that Stewart is doing a bang-up job of being a weirdo old guy with a bad idea. But I also watched this trailer and felt a sense of dread. Companies today don’t see things like Star Trek or Halo as pieces of art made by creators. Instead, they are simply bits of IP that can be tossed into a blender to create some corporation’s next streaming service. Why are these characters hanging out? What do they have in common? Why is this happening? “Stop asking questions,” says Paramount’s marketing team and execs. “Instead, just be amazed and delighted by all the IP and CONTENT we own. Isn’t that rad?” I don’t think so. The continued consolidation of pop culture is actually really depressing. The reality that in 2024 a single company can own so much of our collective art is scary. It seems like 90% of film and TV are owned by Disney, Universal, Paramount, or a few other big players. And if one of them decides to consume another, as Disney did to Fox, even more of pop culture gets shoved into one box owned by one greedy company that can decide, on a whim, to cancel shows, remove movies from streaming services, or use beloved characters as pawns in their content wars. so I finally watched the first two episodes of The Umbrella Academy and I have some thoughts (below the cut)

First off, in the first five minutes I just started screaming “WHY IS SHE GIVING BIRTH”. This was the first time I’ve ever consumed any TUA media so this is my first impression of the show. Needless to say I was very concerned.

Next, the characters seem pretty cool. Like Vanya’s pretty intriguing (middle child/not “special enough” syndrome) and Diego seems kinda cool. Luther’s oddly reminding me of Matthias from SoC for some reason idk. Why are Klaus, Five and Ben literally so funny. I’ve burst out laughing several times because Klaus just won’t shut up. Also if I had a nickel for every time I watched a show with a character who’s mentally middle-aged but looks/keeps being mistaken for as a child I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice. (Chilchuck my beloved).

also idk why but when Pogo told Vanya that her father “loved her in his own way” I straight up yelled out loud “oh yeah you mean the child neglect and emotional abuse? yeah real loving of you my guy”

final thing: the soundtrack is FIREEE‼️ i used to be obsessed with Istanbul, not Constantinople by They Might Be Giants so I was vibing in that fight scene.

overall, I have pretty high hopes and am eager to keep watching. All I’ve ever heard about this show is positive and so far I’m pretty hooked. I’ll update you guys later on the next few episodes.

The Umbrella Academy: Here's a character whose quietness, lack of feeling, and wish for creative pleasure you can relate to. Also, she feels like an outsider in her own family.

Me: cool. I now identify with this character while watching your show.

TUA: she connects with a nice guy who listens to her, goes off her meds, pushes away her motherly big sister, and rediscovers her feelings and unique powers.

Me: cool, that feels great. what happens to Vanya feels like it's happening to me.

TUA: Her motherly older sister warns her about strange men; the lover then turns out to be exploiting her for her powers. She was wrong about everything, including herself. Her lashing out at Allison, instead of being a cathartic release of years of anger, is a tragic mistake. Vanya is understandably but dangerously Wrong About Everything.

Me: ...

Me: Listen, I get that your story is about the toxic potential of the outsider mentality and Vanya's need for connection with her family. it's about family coming to understand each other, and showing people that you're not automatically right and good just because you're left out. But here's the thing...if Vanya feels bad about what she's done, and the danger and near-tragedy her emotions led her into, then I feel the same way. I feel like I've just been taught a Valuable Lesson on Strange Men by a know-it-all older sister whose mothering feels invasive. I feel like my anger (and all my feeling) is dangerously destructive and must always be carefully measured by its consequences to others. This doesn't feel cathartic or helpful. It feels limiting and lecturing and everything I don't need.

TUA: Sorry, but we already made the show. Also, Klaus stops dressing gothically cool, becomes less Fun (though still awesome) and more Lectured on Being Sorry For Himself by his Know-It-All Brother. Oh, and Five has to let go of Delores. Character development isn't growing and learning and finding power and pleasure and understanding and love. It's Moral Improvement and Admitting your Wrongness.

Last song: Well, "The Lonely Goatherd" is again stuck in my head since I'm still writing that chapter (I added two more sentences since last time I mentioned it!). I haven't had music on this morning, so the last song I actually listened to was when my clock radio went off, and it was on this eighties r&b ballad I don't know the name of and can't remember the artist, either, but the guy keeps belting out what I think is "find one hundred ways," except my brain always processes it as "five one hundred ways" and I'm always like "why can't he just say five hundred ways like a normal person? Or fifty-one hundred?" and it probably ruins the earnest effect he was going for.

Oh, I guess actually the last song I listened to was that cool stringed instrument I reblogged last.

Three ships: Huh. Five/Viktor is really the biggest I've interacted with lately. And since I am still reading primarily TUA fic the only other (and this time CANONICAL!) ship I'm into there is Lila and Diego (sorry, @stephsageek, I've gone and split up your main ship into two separate ships in response to your own post, oh well!) (I grant you, Five and Lila are my favorite BROTP (ironic turn of phrase there), but that's not what we're talking about. I don't think). So let me cast my nets for whatever are my Biggest Ships of All Time instead, which would be... Howl and Sophie? Yeah, they'd do. You could instead name a property and I'd tell you who (if any) I ship within it. Who else have I written for on AO3? Oh, Melanie and Oliver Bird. Do I ship them or are they just being them (even though that is a flat-out romcom-tagged fic)? The only other non-Gen fic I have there is Tesseract, which will go into the workings of Alex and Kate Murry's marriage a bit quite romantically by my standards, but still isn't really SHIPPING. --I'm not a big shipper, if you couldn't tell, but I DO have ships I care about out there, I promise.

Currently Reading: The Astonishing Chronicles of Oscar from Elsewhere, by Jaclyn Moriarty, which has set me off on my how much I just love Jaclyn Moriarty and why don't more people know her raving again. I swear every single character in her books has ADHD and it makes it such a weirdly comfortable world to live in. My kids are like "I KNOW THAT FEELING!" every two paragraphs. She's just so creative and has SUCH a way with chararacters. I'm not fixing that typo, I like it.

Currently watching: I'm actually not sure when the last time I watched ANYTHING was. Not counting videos of cool psychedelic stringed instruments on Tumblr. And cat videos. My son playing Splatoon is what's usually on the TV in the living room, but I wouldn't say I watch all that closely. I just hum along to the music and annoy him.

Currently consuming: Aldi's brand mini wontons mixed with leftover Thai noodles, because why limit oneself to one inauthentic Asian cuisine at a time?

Last movie: again with the What DID I last watch question, which I think means I haven't watched a movie since New Years, the last one of which was STILL (since last I answered the What movie did I last watch question) Arsenic and Old Lace. I got The Music Man out of the library recently because I was quoting "Trouble" at the kids and they didn't know what I was talking about so I have to educate them, but I haven't actually put it ON yet.

Currently craving: Shockingly, not much of anything. Maybe because I just had lunch. Maybe peppermint just to counteract the wontons and Thai noodles.

question: can you give a summary of tua s4? were there any things you enjoyed?

OH BOY. Okay. I'm really bad at summaries so I'll try my best here. So it takes place in a timeskip five years forward where everyone's living in the new timeline where they don't have powers, and they're all living relatively normal lives. During that, though, Five and Lila are going undercover to investigate this secret society of people who are having memories from another timeline and believe they're in the wrong one. So then this guy comes to them and is like, "Guys you have to help me, my daughter Jennifer's involved with this secret society and has pretty much gone no-contact with me, and we've always been pretty close so I'm worried about her, I need you guys to find her and bring her back," so then they all agree to go on one last mission and get this guy's daughter back. (The guy brought some of the artifacts the society uses to prove they're in the wrong timeline, which included a vial of marigold, a.k.a. the particles that gave everyone with powers powers in the first place, and the Hargreeveses took that with them. They all agreed they wouldn't use it to get their powers back, but Ben ended up spiking all their drinks with it and drinking some himself, so now everyone has their powers back again despite. having not wanted to.) So they go and retrieve this girl Jennifer, and she's never heard of this guy who asked to get her back, which uh oh! That's weird! But then the leaders of the secret society ram into the Hargreeves' van and kidnap her!! Turns out they believe in this thing called The Cleanse, where this timeline and all the others will be destroyed so everything can return to this original timeline that they believe to be the right one, and they believe that Jennifer is the one to bring about this cleanse. Ben ends up breaking her out though, and it turns out they're both madly in love with each other. This is a problem though, cause the Hargreeveses discover that she contains durango, which is the opposite of marigold, and if the two elements come into contact with each other, Pretty Bad Things will happen. Like the end of the world kind of bad. But wuh oh! While Ben and Jennifer are hiding out trying to make sure Jennifer doesn't get kidnapped again, they end up. you know. doing it. Which is Pretty Bad when you're made up of two opposite elements that will end the world when combined. So they end up beginning to fuse together into this freaky blobby monster that's gonna end the world, so the secret society people are stoked about this, cause omg!! The Cleanse is finally taking place!! But the Hargreeveses obviously try and stop it, although nothing they try is really working. But here's where it gets really crazy: Five learns from an alternate timeline version of himself that before the Hargreeveses were born, there was only one timeline, but once they were born, the timeline split into a bunch of different branching ones, and they always end up causing the world to end in each one. So the Cleanse is actually a good thing, as they split the timelines when there was never supposed to be more than one, and that by succumbing to the Ben-Jennifer monster, they can restore the timeline to the single one it was always supposed to be. So it's a hard decision, but they all decide to sacrifice themselves and their marigolds to bring rightness to the world, and as they get consumed by the monster, all the different timelines are erased, and it's restored to the one original timeline it was always meant to be, where life is normal and peaceful, and the Hargreeveses come back as marigold flowers at the base of a tree together. I left out some of the subplots so hopefully this makes sense XD

Anyway, what I liked about the season!! While my feelings about it are complicated, there were some things I did enjoy. For one, I just liked it overall and was along for the ride in the same way I've been for the previous seasons. Admittedly I was pretty confused and full of questions for most of it, but I'll just chalk that up to them having fewer episodes this season to work with, so it kinda makes sense that a lot of confusing information might be thrown at us since they have a shorter amount of time to tell the story. I had heard some pretty bad things about the season from my friends, so I went in expecting it to be a trainwreck, but it was actually enjoyable to watch the way all the other seasons have been, and I liked seeing where the story went :) I also like that all my burning questions got answered!! I was worried that with only six episodes, my big questions from the last season wouldn't get properly answered, but I got satisfying answers to both, which was a really pleasant surprise. And branching off of that, in regards to one of the answers we got this season, IT'S SO COMPELLING TO ME THAT REGINALD WAS THE ONE WHO KILLED BEN. LIKE. OHH MY GOD. It just really underlines what a depraved and terrible person Reginald Hargreeves is, and it's just so dark and horrifying to know that the entire time, Reginald had the capacity to off the Umbrella kids if they did something against his orders. It's just so. AUGH. IT ADDS SUCH AN AWFUL AND COMPELLING LEVEL TO WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY AND I AM HERE FOR IT!! I also found the horror of Ben and Jennifer fusing to become this monster to be creepy but in a way that was so compelling. Like I don't usually like horror, but that creeped me out in a way that I actually liked, I just found it so interesting how they were starting to lose control of themselves, but were so devoted to one another that they didn't want to separate even if they were fusing into a horrific world-ending creature. I also really liked the execution of the plot twists!! They each made me go absolutely nuts while I was watching, which was just really fun for me as a viewer X3 I also. really like that they got the actress who played Ms. O in Odd Squad to play the older version of Allison's daughter Claire 🤭 It was just really fun for me to watch. The first episode shows everyone at a birthday party for Diego and Lila's kids, and there were juice boxes there, and I still can't believe they didn't show Claire holding one!! X3 So yeah, it definitely has its flaws, and there are some things I take issue with, but I don't think it was overall a bad season. Even if I was confused and felt overwhelmed by all the information they were throwing at me, I genuinely had a good time watching it and am glad the show got a proper end unlike a lot of Netflix series :)

TLDR: FIVE HARGREEVES!!!!!

A lot of the tags, both from OP and others, just gave me such major Five thoughts that I gotta put it out there. OP mentioning an "indifferent" or "regal" whumpee... number five hargreeves everyone. and another tag by someone else mentioning the whumper and whumpee knowing eachother prior- every handler (or just commission) and five fic ever (positive) (believe this tag was from sunshine-sam)

those fit in the tags fine but my main point that got really long was just the idea of all the hargreeves siblings being present. it hurts my soul so intensely. A major part of the hargreeves family is that at their core, they are selfish people. They get consumed by their own life and issues easily that, majority of the time, they tend to brush off others- even their family, the people they care about most! and do not get me twisted, this DOES also include Five. while his selfishness comes from a selfless core, the way he makes choices and goes about his business does inherently have selfish traits attached to it. yes, he's trying to save his family, but he does not take into account a lot of their emotions and their own lives. does this mean the hargreeves siblings take into account his struggle and life? no!!!! and that is part of their charm!!! they are people who so badly want to do good and show others they care, but it manages to backfire on them every single time without fail.

in this scenario, i feel that realization would hit and it would be the worst because you're sitting on the line between life and death. this guilt will not matter when the party you want to apologies to is dead. and if you all get out of this alive, there is still the question of how? how do you apologies? how do you thank someone for so much, and show that you truly, deeply, do care?

once thing that does irk me about how tua and some parts of fandom (this does not really only apply to tua. happens everywhere lol) treats these characters is the fact this is not taken into account. do i wish his siblings understood all Five has done for him? yes! do i think Five understands them and takes them into account when doing all this he has done for them? not really! like all of them, he tries, but also like all of them, a lot of this blows up in his face and backfires. all of them i have this sadness for. they deserve understanding and care and HELP, but they also do not tend to give these things in a way that is truly helpful. their family is so tragic, and i think people do forget about that. while i am no stranger to being a fan of characters and just wanting things to be better for them so MUCH, i do not think it will ever overpower my love for writing and character analyzation. (i will admit five is probably my favourite, but does not mean i will not critique him he also needs help desperately lmao.)

even more tldr: all of these characters do bad and im tired of pretending they dont!!!!!! that is not just a little guy!!!!

Okay so picture this... a line up of heroes, all bound and forced to their knees in front of whumper.

Whumper paces in front of them calmly. They have their hands clasped behind their back as they begin to threaten or make demands of Leader. Then they slowly stop in front of our whumpee. Maybe they look the youngest, most inexperienced, or the most scared but something about them catches whumper's eye.

Leader's eyes go wide as they try to redirect whumper's attention back to them, but it's too late. Whumper places a hand under Youngest's jaw and lifts their gaze to force eye contact. They see the barely hidden fear behind a shaky mask of indifference and they *smile.*

Hi guys, Glitch here

I meant to make this announcement for a while, but I don't think I'll be continuing this blog. It was a lot of fun while it lasted, but I don't have the time or motivation to keep it up. I've been creating things for my other interests and this has just sort of faded into the background

I wanted to let you all know so you won't expect new content from this blog in the future. I'm planning to keep it up as an archive but I won't be actively continuing it

I really enjoyed creating and running this blog and it blew my mind how many of you liked the content I was posting. This community is amazing and wonderful and I plan to continue consuming content for it on my own

Feel free to follow me on my main if you'd like. I don't post much TUA there, but I do post a lot of Destiny and DSMP if you're interested in those things

I'm such a fan of your writing, and I had to tell you one of the things I love most is how you don't shy away from negative character traits. Sometimes it feels like when people are really invested in a character, they'll do everything they can to smooth their edges and tell us that 'they aren't really mean, just misunderstood' to explain away every bad thing they've ever done and it drives me batty. Character flaws are what makes them interesting, and it's so refreshing to see someone embrace them and actually reflect on the character as they're written instead of some romanticized version of them. It leads to such a deeper, more nuanced understanding, and you explore it so well.

Particularly with Five, he's a complicated guy who has undeniably experienced a lifetime of trauma and had a shitty hand dealt to him. But I've seen a trend in the tua fandom where they feel so sorry for him that they don't want to acknowledge that he's done anything wrong, or they get very defensive when it comes to his more abrasive personality traits and actions. (To put it lightly.) I don't want to knock how people want to consume their media or write their stories, because it's all for their own enjoyment, but I wish more could understand that when you take those away it not only severely diminishes his character, but also where you can take him.

Life is messy, no great character is purely good or evil but some ugly mixture of the two. I'm so glad there are people like you who really get that and have such a solid grasp of one of my favorite characters. Thank you for doing him justice!

I'm with you, anon, it's that gray space of characters, their flaws, that I think makes them so compelling. And we all need that softer, less complicated fluff sometimes, but why shy away from who a character is when you can dig in with your hands and sift through all those layers to find just what makes them tick, play with their contradictions and desires and morals. A Five without complications? Now, where's the fun in that ;) He's a little traumatized bastard of a man and I love him for it.

A/N: This chapter reminded me of things that have never been addressed... so this is a story of how things left unsaid all collided in my head. Hope you enjoy.

Also - yes, Ethan Ramsey can sing arias. Is anyone still truly surprised by the fact that this guy can do anything?

There is something mesmerizing about watching the lights of day go out, overpowered by darkness, ablaze with colours - from the depths of blue, through indigo, navy and all the way to pitch-black.

About how, in a sense, it washes away all the bothers and allows you to start anew with the next rise of the almighty sun.

Ethan Ramsey was hoping for this exactly, maybe more than ever, but all the signs showed it wasn’t in the cards for him.

Or at least not today.

He stared into the void, interwoven by occasional human figures passing by through the front lobby. No voices of the day were able to reach him on the 7th floor of his kingdom. Behind the glass wall, he was almost in a different world.

It had been yet another day that brought him more gritted teeth, holding himself back and resigned sighs, than actual satisfaction from helping those who counted on him. All these ‘activities’ were not only annoying but also highly energy-consuming.

Bringing the index and middle fingertips to his pulsating temples, he started to compress and massage them in small circles, trying to soothe the pounding inside his skull. He could hear the blood rushing through the highways of his veins, the sound almost drowning out all external stimuli.

But there were certain sounds his expert ear was trained on, the ones he would’ve recognized even in his sleep.

Like the one reaching his ears right now, the sound of the door handle being pressed.

With his back facing the door, he couldn’t see who was trying to impose on his much-needed solitude. But since the unexpected guest did not precede their ministrations by knocking, the possibilities narrowed down significantly. There were only two people on the premises of Edenbrook who could invade his personal space without a modicum of manners.

“Can I help you?” He modulated his voice to ensure the tone was expressing two things: annoyance and irony in the otherwise polite question.

“I’m sorry.” From all the voices, this one he did not expect to hear now. A melodic tone was joined by a scuffle of retreating steps. “Do you want me to go?”

Ethan curled his lips in a tiny smile. They both knew she wasn’t apologetic and that he wanted anything but her to leave.

“No, it’s just that there are only two people in this hospital that wouldn’t bother knocking and I thought it was one of them paying me a visit.”

“Let me guess… Zaid and Baz?”

“No, but in terms of concept, you were actually close…just another type of evil ‘twins’."

“Oh, you mean his majesty King Bloom & his annoyance Dr Carrick?”

“Even as a joke, it sounds creepy and horrible.”

“Well, count me as a third now. Heads up though, I will only stop knocking after twilight.”

It was clear as crystal Ethan’s already specific sense of humor had less than ever space for amusement.

“I brought you this.” She put a brown paper bag on his desk, which immediately revealed the aroma of something delicious. “I figured you’re probably gonna stay here all night, so I thought I’ll pop over and check on you.”

He didn’t say anything, staring into the darkness. Not because he didn’t want to - he simply didn’t know what. This simple gesture was very touching and filled him with gratitude. But he was lacking the right words.

Then, for the first time since she’s interrupted his train of thought, he turned around to look at her. Tired and with puffy eyes, she’d still put everyone else to shame. Even on the worst of days, the light radiating from her turned heads and made the room brighter.

She extended a hand and when their fingers touched, he felt this weird, tingly feeling that has traveled from his palm, through his arm and neck, and then straight to his core.

Pressing him gently against the edge of the desk, she took his glasses off. Then loosened his tie and nonchalantly disheveled his hair. Ethan wouldn’t let anyone else in the world touch them, let alone put them in a state of such disarray.

With her, all the rules existed only to be broken.

“Do you want to tell me what’s going on in this big brain of yours?”

“Smart move, Valentine. You’ve pacified me so that now I will have no choice but to tell you whatever you want to know.”

“You always have a choice, let’s just hope you’re gonna make the right one.”

Ethan nodded, no sound escaping his lips. She knew she’d have to take it upon herself to get any information out of her stubborn converser.

“So, how are you holding up? I want an honest answer."

“I’ve been better.”

“I thought so.”

“It’s just that… Tobias is driving me crazy. His presence really tests my patience… I don’t know if I would’ve stopped myself from punching him had it not been for you.”

“Why thank you, I didn’t know my therapeutic services were that good.”

“They are.” Ethan cleared his throat. “But it’s… not just that.”

Dead silence lingered between them and he knew he had no other choice but to continue.

“The only reason why I haven’t wiped this ridiculous smirk off his face yet is that whenever I look at him, I… I see you in that room with Travis. I’m trying to remind myself that, as much as I hate to admit it, he was crucial to finding the cure on such short notice.”

“Ethan…”

“I already told you” - he interrupted her as if not to stop the words from flowing, afraid they may be trapped forever otherwise - “that there was so much more at stake last time Tobias set foot in Edenbrook.”

She took a deep breath, her eyes going slightly wider.

“The truth is, for me… everything was at stake. I would’ve done anything he’d asked me to, I’d have forgiven him if it meant saving you.”

Elle turned still, all her body movements, her breathing and even her blinking ceased.

It was one of those moments that mean so much but leave you with so little to say.

Using the power of non-verbal communication and their deep affinity, she bestowed on him the most gentle, loving and grateful expression her face could muster after yet another exhausting shift.

Ethan extended his arm and before she realized it, her back was gently pressed to the older doctor’s chest. Having wrapped her slender frame with his broad shoulders, Elle inhaled his familiar aroma. He smelled of comfort and felt like a safe harbor. He nudged her hair with his nose and placed a featherlight kiss on the crook of her neck. She smelled of calmness and felt like coming back home from a long journey.

“So,” - he murmured directly into her ear - “whether you like it or not, I am using you to soften the blow every time I look at Tobias’ face.”

“I think I can live with that.”

“But I can’t guarantee it will always be enough, he is a cocky son of a bitch.”

“Let's make a deal then. I see how much it costs you and I’m not telling you to trust Leland or forgive Tobias, I still believe you should be cautious. Let’s just wait and see where this goes, I think we’ll know sooner rather than later. In the meantime, we should focus on what matters the most, our patients.”

“Where is the deal part?”

“If it turns out you were right, I will hold Tobias and you will punch him. Deal?”

“I believe it should be the other way round. Declan Nash’s face told me your right hook is exquisite, Rookie.”

They both laughed at the memory which seemed so distant now, almost as if it's happened in another lifetime.

But Ethan went quiet again and she felt his body tense up, his arms tightening gently around her. It wasn’t very obvious, but she knew. It still came as a shock how well she actually knew him.

“Ethan? What is it?”

“Nothing.”

“Ethan.”

“I’m sorry, I am not the most cheery companion today. You’re probably better off not spending too much time with me before you turn into a cynic.”

“Dr Ramsey, what a pathetic attempt of trying to get rid of me. You’ve never been the most cheerful type and I’ve survived your gloomy companionship, hell, I think it grew on me over time. So I should be ok today, too.”

It looked like silence was very much their third companion today.

“I’m thinking about Francis.”

“Yeah, me too.”

“I’m thinking about how hard it would be not to see. So many beautiful things, colors, all turning into nothingness.”

“I take it you mean the opera?”

“That too, but let’s just say I’ve learned to appreciate things that are right in front of my nose… literally and figuratively.”

The butterflies started somersaulting in her stomach.

“I didn’t want to add more to your plate at the time, but I’ve already felt this way… when we diagnosed Caroline and Leland.”

It was funny that, despite his obvious animosity towards Bloom, whenever his wife was in the picture, he spoke about both in an almost affectionate way. His doctor’s instincts were kicking in, because first and foremost he was a doctor who had his patients’ best interest at heart.

“The thought of not being able to touch you…it reminded me of touching you through the layer of hazmat suit. And now with everything Francis has been through, I just can’t be bothered to think about anything else but you. This is my true personal connection to this case.”

It was her turn to be speechless.

Ethan tightened his grip over her once again, this time protectively rather than out of stress. Slow hum started filling the air, the melody soon joined by lyrics, which he sang in fluent Italian; a private concert, performed for her and her only.

She remembered their patient’s face, which seemed calmer once Ethan started singing the aria before the depths of illness contorted it with pain.

Francis' husband's words echoed throughout her head.

This is a few days late, I’m sorry, but I would be remiss not to mention the anniversary, and thank everyone for their ongoing friendship, community and support. 

When I started EH, it was on a whim; the tumblr group chats were not working, even though so many of us were already making attachments and wanting to chat about our show and fandom. Discord was a great platform, and new to me, but I found the few TUA themed discord servers I came across initially nothing like what I wanted to be apart of at the time - simple, friendly, inclusive and most importantly, for adults. There is nothing like finding acquaintances and friends that you can talk to and share with and be at ease that you’re among peers. If you don’t see a place for you, you carve out your own.

I really had no long-term plan or dared hope we’d get to 3 months, nevermind one year. Clearly, I was not alone in craving a refuge for this silly ol’ hobby. I’m so glad!

A year is a long time, and a lot has happened! It’s not always been easy, so many ups and downs, and tons of guesswork as we grew. Some hard times, but plenty of great ones too. Fandom events, game nights, movie watchalongs and late nights in ns/fw - all while under lockdown irl! It’s given us a lot to enjoy.

I want to thank everyone who has been, or is currently a member of Elliott’s House personally. No matter if we have spoken directly or not, you’re a community member who contributes to our culture and fandom just by consuming content, joining social events, and being a friend to others in the Umbrella Academy fandom.

I’ve met some incredible people in the last year that certainly taught me things, and made a positive impact on my life personally, and that means a lot to me. In the middle of complete isolation during this pandemic, struggling even harder with mental health for it, the friends at EH became a virtual home. I’ve loved getting to know so many of you, and I really hope I can know more of you as time goes on if I should be so fortunate.

I could not maintain a server of the surprising size EH became without bringing on mods for support. The team started small and grew alongside the server, and I’ve gotten to work closely with people I didn’t initially know much about - but have since become wonderful friends and allies. The admin support team has changed over the year as life called good friends away, but for any moment someone has been apart of the team, they’ve made a positive impact on EH as a whole.

I want to thank, most genuinely and profoundly, the current admin support team;

Mina, in particular, you’ve been my most trusted fandom friend since EH’s beginning - you’re amazing, and I’m honoured to be your friend. Thank you, and to all the current mods who care deeply about the community and volunteer their time and effort into EH and making it fun and safe for all our friends. Nothing happens without you guys. Truly the backbone of social fandom. Happy Birthday Elliott’s House, and with a little love and patience, I’m sure we’ll have our server to come home to once S3 explodes over the horizon.  Here is to fandom, inclusivity, fighting hate with love and good times together.

[I cannot begin to describe the 15-20 hours of work this took. I was way too lucky when taako rolled such a clean and classic prompt for me, but once I finally imagined in my head what I wanted to do, executing it was a giant obstacle. It’s the most elaborate gif set I’ve made, in terms of number of effects and animation in one set. Photoshop puked on me halfway through this set, in my 3rd draft, glitching and bugging out for anything more than 100 frames long or so. I was so stubborn though. On my fifth(?) draft, here we are. It was most difficult because I had to figure this out never having done it, but also not seeing it done often, and not knowing any kind of related tutorials either. Really knocking around blindly. By the end, loading this in PS was pushing my laptop to the limits, omg it took PS 20 mins to open the document each time I started a fresh session. I do love that in all these processes, I’m recovering old tricks I used to know, and learning some new things I’ve never done in my graphic arts pursuits. It’s not perfect, but I wanted to make something worthy of this event, and to be worthy next to the mind-blowing entries by the others. 

Thank you all who participated in this event, flooding our feeds with beautiful creations for us to enjoy. Fandom creators are so precious to me, I appreciate you all - and all of you who in turn consume and feedback with love! Let’s do this again soon, guys, what a treat it has been.
