It’s Guy Fawkes Day/ Guy Fawkes Night/Bonfire Night 2024! A day to commemorate and celebrate the failed gunpowder assassination attempt of King James I back in the 17th century! For some context in 1605, a fella by the name of Guy Fawkes decided to plan a gunpowder assassination along with his gang by blowing up the House of Parliament with King James inside, this was all due to political and religious matters (remember back then, the church was massively Protestant and that being part of a different religion was incredibly illegal if they find out and Guy Fawkes and his gang were mostly Catholic.) They believe should they succeed in killing James, they get a new sympathetic ruler. But the plan failed spectacularly, because there was someone who notified the king ahead of time and not only was the whole gang, Guy Fawkes included was caught they were executed for treason and conspiracy. And now every year the British holiday on November 5th was now Guy Fawkes Night and the rest is history. It’s celebrated every year to commemorate the foiled attempt!
Happy Guy Fawkes Night 2024 everyone! Celebrate with bonfires, fireworks, sparklers, firecrackers and other pyrotechnics!

Remember, remember, the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason, and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

As I said to my American mutuals: today my country is setting off fireworks and making bonfires in celebration of a man who tried to blow up the government 360 years ago. And today, Americans will be making the very difficult and very close decision to choose whether they want their government to be run by either the human embodiment of Everyone Gets A Free Houseplant, or Eternal Death By Diarrhoea.
We’ll all be watching and waiting on the other side of the pond. Good luck, Yanks. Go out and vote.

It's the 5th of November, you all know what that means...
It's my 30th birthday! Which famously falls on the same day as, you guessed it, BONFIRE NIGHT!! So for my birthday this year I demand you all go out and build giant bonfires and burn me in effigy! And put on fabulous fireworks displays! And, of course, GLOW STICKS GALORE! All of the glow sticks! For everyone!
And don't forget to sing the song!
Huzzah!!!

🔥 Bonfire Night, a date specific to the United Kingdom, remembers The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 when Catholic conspirators, of which Guido Fawkes was a member of the collective of 13, tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in order to kill King James I (The Jacobean Era). The goal for this plot was to aid in restoring a Catholic Monarch to the Throne of England.
🔥 After the 16th Century religious Reformations, particularly the 1536 English Reformation under Henry VIII breaking away from the Roman Catholic Church which increased the authority of the Church of England under Protestant ideals. These beliefs were particularly heavily enforced during the reign of Henry VIII's son, Edward VI, though the severity of these later reformations are generally often incorrectly attributed to his father's Henrician Reformation.
🔥 The Tudor reign and Jacobean rule was difficult for Catholics as persecution was rife, though this increased further after the failed plot. Robert Catesby, the man in charge of organising the Gunpowder Plot wanted to replace the Protestant King James I with a Catholic Monarch.
🔥 Despite popular belief, Guy Fawkes was not the leader, he was the Member found first as his job was to set off the fuse for the 36 barrels in the cellar beneath the Houses of Parliament.
🔥 Originally the bonfires were to celebrate the foiled attempt, however, over the centuries it is often commonplace for people to now celebrate the Plotters.

Years have passed and it is November 5th once again, and although rather more important events are happening elsewhere in the world on this particular date in 2024, here in Britain it is Guy Fawkes Night – and once again, the weather in the wild west Highlands of Scotland is not exactly conducive to a firework display…
However, Algy does love fireworks and he could not let the occasion pass unnoticed; he hopes that you too will enjoy this blast from his past adventures 🎆
Tumblr media
November 5th is Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night, in the UK, and it is traditional to have your own wee firework display in your garden. The pessimistic weather forecasters predicted heavy rain, but in the event the evening remained more or less dry, and the wind was not too strong, so Algy had a lot of fun :)

just realised that the 2024 UK vote this year was on the 4th of July (Independence Day in the US) and the US vote this year was on the 5th of November (Guy Fawkes/Fireworks Night in the UK (it’s a lot bigger of a deal than either of its names imply I promise)) and idk it’s just a bit funny to me

05.11.2024 – „Guy Fawks Day“
