Newsie: Guttersnipe

Guttersnipe is a young Newsie with red hair and freckles.

He wears a black newsies cap, an orange-brown vest over a dark brown shirt and dark green pants.

Poor Guttersnipe can't even move this early in the morning. He's glued to the bed post

But once he puts on his Newsies™ outfit, he's raring to go!

He gains even more energy when they are singing

and when they're battling the Delancey brothers.

His name means: "a scruffy and badly behaved child who spends most of their time on the street."

He's friends with most of the younger Newsies. But his older Newsie friends include:

Jake,

Swifty

and Snap.

"Now the world will hear, what we got to say."

In his spare time, Guttersnipe likes to practise his Elvis moves,

and play his tin can drum.

Although he may be "scruffy", he carries around a broom with him. Not for cleaning though, but for bashing scabs.

Luckily he didn't bring his broom with him when he has a scuffle with Specs.

*Guttersnipe is mentioned in an official script of Newsies and even in a promotion newspaper, but the character isn't mentioned anywhere in the movie and his name isn't in the credits. So the character was either cut from the movie completely or was casted and appears in the movie but not credited. I've decided to give this actor the name because he is the only other prominent Newsie besides Snap and Tumbler who lives at the Kloppman house, who are already given fan names.

From the script, we get a taste of his 'badly behaved' personality. He has a line after Boots:

Ursprünglich angetreten mit dem wohlüberlegten Konzept, die Rhythmik des No-Wave mit den Soli ausgewählter Carcass-Platten zu vermählen, gaben sich Gretchen und Bobby aus Leeds bald auch jedweder Form von Inzest mit Freejazz, Einhörnern sowie Tiefseeeruptionen hin. Nach zehn Jahren Bandgeschichte und diversen gescheiterten Buchungsversuchen übersubventionierter Hochkulturfestivals bemühen Gretchen und Bobby erstmals ihre pürierstab-kompatible Gitarre, sein geheimnisvoll verkabeltes Schlagzeug sowie ein beachtliches Lungenvolumen in den Kulturbunker.

Schwemmbalg (HB)

Konzeptionelle Konzeptlosigkeit im Rausch der Überzeitlichkeit. Wo vorher noch Musik stand steht heute der Dilettantismus. Irgendwas mit Mikrofonen, Klumpen aus Field Recordings, Geräuschen und Samples wird zu einem schwammartigen Gemisch aus verzerrten Stimmen und zerstotterten Beats. Must Be für alle FreundInnen des Stockholm-Syndroms.

Atmo (HB)

Text und Bass. Eine schrabbelige Fahrt durch einstürzende Bergtunnel. Die Themen werden dort fallen gelassen wo sie anfangen. Wer stolpert, hat gewonnen.

sir john would not have wished it this way, james tells himself. he doesn’t know whether he’s motivated onward or backward by the notion, evident as it is now that sir john was a man of questionable judgment and inaction. still, james is grieved by the loss of him, therefore finds discomfort in contradicting him so.

the apprehension is plain on his face when he calls forth young mutt: he recognizes his capabilities as being superior to his own at a similar age, but were sir john making the call, he’d see him as a child. little more.

‘ seaman mutt, ’ james commands, training his expression into a professional neutrality, although he’s lately been too on edge to fool many of his crew. ‘ collect your overthings and walk with me to terror. ’

Thanks for the question! There was a Newsie named Guttersnipe in an earlier script that didn't make it into the film, but made it into some promotional materials: https://queenofbrooklyn.tumblr.com/post/186481955732/recently-i-bought-the-weirdest-piece-of-newsies I don't think anyone in the movie was given that name. Since this kid hangs around the main Newsies a lot and lives at the Kloppman house, I will give him the name, Guttersnipe!
