Blue Canvas of Youthful Days
Unpopular Opinion: We thought the ending was perfect! And not just because it was happy.
Tumblr media
spoilers ahead
Wow... we loved this ending so much and thought it was so perfect for the story/characters, that we were a bit surprised that the ending wasn't better received.
Secrets, choices and goodbye
When Qi Lu's dad threatens Qin Xiao's future, Qi Lu can not bear the idea that Qin Xiao's life could be ruined because of him. He wont let his dad hurt Qin Xiao and will do anything it takes to protect Qin Xiao from that, even if it means hurting him and letting Qin Xiao hate him. Qi Lu believes this is the only way for Qin Xiao to go to college and get his dream and even if it causes Qin Xiao pain, he will live happily. So Qi Lu makes this choice for him because he knows Qin Xiao would never let him go if he knew the truth and he'd sacrifice his own dream to protect him and stay together.
And then Qin Xiao gets hurt protecting Qi Lu. Ironically, this means he can't finish his test and get into college, at least for now. Qin Xiao knows it will destroy Qi Lu if he knows protecting him lead to his injury and cost him the ability to complete his test. Qin Xiao will not risk Qi Lu giving up his chance to escape from his abusive father and pursue his dreams. Qin Xiao believes Qi Lu must leave so he can finally be free and live happily. Qin Xiao won't let Qi Lu sacrifice his dreams, so Qin Xiao makes the choice for him by letting him go. I think it's also worth pointing out that Qin Xiao always believed he had little to offer Qi Lu and that he would be a burden to Qi Lu.
We don't love the secrets, and often, they feel wrong. But in this story, I think it's actually a beautiful part of how much they love each other. They both desperately want the other to pursue their dreams and be happy. They both believe (and they are both correct) that the other would give up their own happiness for the other. So they both take that choice away from the one they love by keeping their own unhappiness/misfortune a secret so it can't influence the other's choices.
The ironic part is that as the audience, we see the entire picture. It's easy to believe that a quick conversation would just have fixed all of this and let them stay together, or let them say goodbye with hopes of reuniting at a later point. But as much as I love honesty, I don't think this actually makes sense in this story because neither would let the other sacrifice for them. Both would try to protect the other's chance of happiness and both would give up their own for the other. So neither would have had a chance at being happy because the ending we got only happened because they both believed the other was happy, and only then, were they free to pursue their own paths.
The stuff in between
For us, the ending was perfect. On the surface, it could be seen as a "flash forward 6 years, we waved a magic wand for them to give them a shallow happy ending". However we actually think their sacrifice and the way they fully let go and removed themselves from each other's lives, combined with the belief that the other would live happily, let them ultimately move forward for themselves and led to their happy ending.
Yes, after going to Russia with his father, Qi Lu ended up joining his mother and pursuing film like he had dreamed. But it was only after he gave into his father and protected Qin Xiao by letting him go. Once Qi Lu believed Qin Xiao was safe and happy (and no longer a tool Qi Lu's father could use to control him), Qi Lu make his own safety and happiness a priority.
When Qin Xiao misses his test, he has little hope that he will ever get into college. As much as he needs Qi Lu to be safe and happy (because he thinks Qi Lu is going to be free from his father), Qin Xiao fears resenting him if he waits for his return. He wants to protect Qi Lu. Protect him from the truth of his injury, the guilt of what that injury means, and the potential resentment that could come with that sacrifice. So he lets go fully of their future together, believing Qi Lu would be safe and happy, and that lets him focus fully on himself and finding the best path forward. Ultimately, likely due to circumstances of the injury as the cause for missing the exam, Qin Xiao is eligible for a special entrance exam that finally allows him to get into college.
Their number one priority would always be the happiness of the other. Both characters thought the best chance for the other to be happy was if they removed themselves from the other's life. Both had let the dream of the other being happy replace their dream of being together and had fully closed that door. This choice to truly let go of the other, believing them to be happiest without them, was the only reason they were able to focus on and pursue their own happiness.
The ending they earned
Flash forward 6 years. They are both living their dreams. The ones they only achieved by walking away and letting go. The sacrifices they both made for each other actually worked out. Yes, they were both under the impression that circumstances were different, but that doesn't change the fact that by letting go, they both carved out their own paths to happiness, exactly like they had both hoped the other would.
Did they try contacting each other? Who knows. But it doesn't matter because both had done what they could to make sure that wouldn't be possible. So I love that they found each other again, living the life they had both hoped the other would have, and then could find new happiness together.
Seriously, we loved this ending. ❤❤❤ What did you think?
😍 Bonus: Did you catch this?!? The future they "imagined" in episode 9 was their actual future! Love this. post by @pigglepiephi 👇

So I came up with this stupid joke that kinda summarizes part of the premise of my Silly Fanfic and I’ve been laughing at it for way too long. Just poor Xiaosheng he just can’t take a break.
