From America's most well-known psychiatrist . . . To Wrestle With Demons offers a rare glimpse of this healer's innermost thoughts about how his work affects patients, deeply moves him, and reflects the society in which we live. Describing the unconscious as music, Dr. Ablow recalls the process of helping patients ferret out the past from the deep recesses of their minds. In so doing, he becomes enchanted with "the subtlety and power of human interaction." He describes the lonely gentleman who, gaining a sense of security from hearing voices, refuses the medication that would take them away...the depressed woman whose extreme dependence on others is rooted in a violent and abusive childhood...the doting husband whose obsessive devotion to his ill wife harks back to the tragic loss of a childhood friend.Dr. Ablow  speaks with unabashed candor about the guilt he feels exchanging empathy for money, his struggle to help a homeless veteran, and the embarrassment of warning a mother of her son's intent to kill her. Through his eyes, the reader confronts a patient's suicide and a close colleague's murder.   While sharing these private revelations, Dr. Ablow provides to us all a looking glass to society. Discussed here, among many issues are poverty, the insanity defense, patients' rights, and changing medical economics. Captured is the critical moment which psychiatry now finds itself - attempting to integrate technology with spirituality, science with the soul, and economics with empathy. To Wrestle With Demons offers anyone who has ever wondered whether psychiatrists truly care about the lives of their patients a resounding yes. Gryphon Editions is proud to release this title as a special leather bound edition personally signed by Dr. Ablow.

This week's book is - The Political Debates between Abraham Lincoln and Steven Douglas
“It was indeed the whole American people that listened to those debates,” remembered Carl Schurz, future Senator and Minister to Spain. He recounted how the “spectacle reminded him of…ancient times… of two armies…standing still to see their two principal champions fight out the contested cause between the lines in single combat.” It was observed that “no more striking contrast could have been imagined than that between those two men as they appeared upon the platform”, while those that gathered listened with “all the devoted attention that many later Americans would reserve for athletic contests.”
These nine debates, taking place during the late summer and early fall of 1858, would mark a reversal in fortunes, both for the men on the platform, and for the destiny of millions. While Senator Douglas would keep his office, the debates—and the thoughts and ideas manifested through them—would travel far and wide. The Lincoln-Douglas debates would go onto shape public opinion concerning whether America, as a nation, truly believed in a “common right of humanity”, or, whether we, the People, believed in the same principles that held lofty “the divine right of kings”.
Most of all, this book highlights the wide gulf between the liberalism before Kennedy’s assassination and the version that emerged afterwards.

Richard Pipes, Harvard scholar and historian of the Russian Revolution, brings his remarkable erudition to an exploration of a wide range of national and political systems to demonstrate persuasively that private ownership has served over the centuries to limit the power of the state and enable democratic institutions to evolve and thrive in the Western world.
Beginning with Greece and Rome, where the concept of private property as we understand it first developed, Pipes then shows us how, in the late medieval period, the idea matured with the expansion of commerce and the rise of cities. He contrasts England, a country where property rights and parliamentary government advanced hand-in-hand, with Russia, where restrictions on ownership have for centuries consistently abetted authoritarian regimes; finally he provides reflections on current and future trends in the United States. Property and Freedom is a brilliant contribution to political thought and an essential work on a subject of vital importance.

Our Book of the Week is Democracy and Distrust by: John Ely
How should the Supreme Court apply the framework of the Constitution in our modern era?
Amidst our current political climate, the answer to this question has increasingly important ramifications in the daily lives of each American citizen. This excellent title, written to enhance the perspectives of both constitutional lawyers and laymen alike, explores the complexity of this important issue. History has proven that judicial review has a powerful impact on the laws and policies which govern us, and as the American electorate becomes more disenchanted with the political processes each day, the debate around the proper role of government as defined by our Constitution will be a critical one to have. Ely tackles this debate head-on, as he weighs the stricter “interpretivism” vs. the modern fundamental values approach to interpreting the Constitution.

It is time for another #WisdomWednesday! This week's book is Judeo-Christian Disputations in the Middle Ages
During the Middle Ages, the Jewish religion was placed on trial by a series of notorious “disputations” or debates between champions of Christianity and Judaism. Only three of these disputations have detailed records which survived - Paris (1240), Barcelona (1263), and Tortosa (1413-14). This book provides an account from both Jewish and Christian sources of these events.

Special Effects by Ron LabrecqueOn this day in history tragedy struck the set of “The Twilight Zone” where three actors were killed on the set due to an accident involving a helicopter while filming. The title Special Effects by Ron Labrecque covers the disaster of such a tragedy as well as the trial. The incident was captured on film therefore there wasn’t dispute on the immediate physical causation that caused these deaths. The disputed issue was the questioning of whether John Landis and those associated were in fact responsible for the creation of such dangerous conditions that led to this incident.  “No other movie, and its aftermath, could have had such special effect on people’s lives, so many of whom are left with little of which to be proud for their participation.” – Ron LaBrecque To purchase a copy visit our website:https://gryphoneditions.com/index.php/our-libraries-2/special-effects-detail

This month in history, The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case:
Sidney B. Whipple’s The Trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann is the controversial case of the kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh baby. Originally published by a reporter who covered the story, it is mainly comprised of the actual court transcript. More than eighty years after the crime, serious questions remain regarding the guilt or innocence of the man convicted and executed for the murder of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s twenty-month-old son in 1932. Lindbergh was, at the time, America’s greatest living hero following his solo trans-Atlantic flight from New York to Paris in 1927. When he and his family moved to remote Hopewell, New Jersey, it was to establish a quiet life. This quiet life was shattered on the evening of March 1st, 1932, when Charles Jr. was taken from his nursery. The child’s body was found in a wooded area two months later, not far from the Lindbergh home. In September 1934, a German immigrant, Bruno Richard Hauptmann, was arrested, having passed a bill from the $50,000 ransom paid by Lindbergh. Moreover, at his trial, handwriting experts linked him to the ransom notes, and a technologist from the U.S. Department of Agriculture testified that Hauptmann had made the ladder used in the kidnapping. Though Hauptmann’s fingerprints were not found on the notes or the ladder or, for that matter, anywhere in the nursery, and though no reliable witness placed him at the scene of the crime, the jury turned in a verdict of guilty. Legal scholars have characterized the trial as patently unfair. Was Hauptmann indeed guilty, or was he a victim of a miscarriage of justice?

On this day in history January 10, 1776, Thomas Paine Published COMMON SENSE, it galvanized public opinion in favor of independence. Rarely, then or since, has a printed document enjoyed such tremendous popularity. Within 3 months it sold an astonishing 500,000 copies at a time when all 13 colonies had a total of 3 million people. Paine's partisan words hit home with electrifying force. The idea of independence was in the air and his, more than any other in America, became the voice for revolution. Fifteen years later, in Rights of Man, Paine created another sensation with his answer to Edmund Burke's attack on the French Revolution. But what began as a defense of the revolution soon evolved into a penetrating analysis of the basic reasons for discontent in European society and a remedy for the evils of arbitrary government. Our Gryphon volume combines these two fundamental and most influential works by Thomas Paine into one beautiful leather bound edition. In honor of Thomas Paine this volume is on sale through his Birthday January 29th! To purchase a copy visit our website -
