I wish I could create Instagram posts with “smell o vision”, because this fragrant herb is Cinnamon Basil (Ocimum basilicum).
The Cinnamon Basil is the same species as normal Italian Basil but the scent is more like a rich floral and spicy perfume than mere cinnamon. Among its bouquet of secondary metabolites is methyl cinnamate, the same naturally occurring chemical that gives cinnamon its distinctive flavour. The cinnamon basil originated in Mexico and is used in both sweet and savoury dishes.
I grew this unusual herb from seed here in the UK and it is flourishing in the greenhouse. The plant is reported to repel white fly although this has not been thoroughly researched yet.

I have a vision, and it's green (:
Tumblr media
For those of you who don't know me, hi— I'm Aniah (: and I have a pretty big green thumb; and by this, I really just mean that I'm a proud plant mom. From succulents to vines, from palms to trees, I have it. However, recently, I've grown an itch to add an additional category of plants to the family- kitchen herbs! I'm super excited to get into the rhythm of research and even more excited to go shopping once I complete my Herbs-To-Buy list! A few herbs that have already added to my list are Oregano, Lavender, Rosemary, Thyme, Parsley, Dill, Basil, and Sage. If you guys have any tips or recommendations at all regarding ideal herbs or just gardening in general, feel free to drop a comment! By the way, these will all be indoors <3

IMPORTANT NOTE: mint is *aggressive* in spreading through runners and very difficult to contain. I recommend keeping it in pots, not in the ground, lest you end up with a yard of *only* mint.
A basic starter project if you want to start growing your own food but have no money & no experience, assuming you like perilla/shiso, basil, mint, sage, or other herbs that have a square stem*.
1. Get a stem or five**, and pluck all the leaves off, except for the smallest. I worked with perilla/shiso this time, and started them in water, but often you can start them straight into soil. Here's one that's started to root in water:

2. Prepare your container. Someone I know had an excess of water jugs, so I cut it in half, poked a few holes in what was the top half, and then put it upside down inside of the bottom half. Ta-da, pot with drainage & saucer:

Be careful, obviously, because hurting yourself makes this go from a free project to a possibly rather expensive one. Soil can gotten for free, see the green onion version for more info on that.
3. Carefully make holes and plant your cuttings. I put a bag over the top to help increase humidity, because basil and perilla both seem a little fussy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Put in the brightest light you have, and keep the soil evenly moist until you see new growth. These I'm starting inside but with the intention to plant outside in the summer. Obligatory check what's invasive in your area because someone told me perilla was invasive where they live. It's very much not here, it dies with the frost and I haven't gotten it to self-sow.
Tips:
Basil and perilla like it warm (above 50f/10c) and are best started indoors. Rosemary, sage, mint, etc, I've found easy to start outdoors. Keep shaded, moist, and cool until well established.
*for a fun project, look up how many culinary herbs are in the mint family! Lamiaceae will haunt your dreams!
** the first time I tried this, it was a stem of basil from take out, and I was so excited that it worked.

My 100th post!!! To celebrate I wanted to take a moment to profess my love for nettles. They grow wildly in nature, and can be picked from early in the spring until late autumn. They're filled with vitamins and can be used in food, drinks, and as supplements!! Just make sure you boil them for at least five minutes before using them, otherwise you might get stung and if you haven't experienced it, lemme tell you: it HURTS.

I guess this post could be for the tumblr witches as well as gardeners. I’m starting to move more into herb territory because some of these can be grown inside all year round and have the potential to really elevate cooking. Today I sketch up some sage, which was a little harder than I expected it to be but was fun nevertheless.
Plant your sage in a tall, narrow pot that drains well. From what I’ve read this is important because they tend to have longer roots, the draining pot helps by keeping root rot away. Water when the soil is dry, it do not leave in standing water (yes I know the picture I drew has a dish under it, I regret going with fashion over function, anyway) Sage really likes the sun, the prefer about 6-8 hours of it a day. When your sage starts developing bigger leaves, you can start pruning it to promote new growth and potentially a bushier plant
I know that sage can grow hydroponically but I honestly don’t know a lot about it. However, if you have any knowledge feel free to reblog with a little tidbit about growing sage in water. I would love to read it and do a little doodle
