Bullseye: Din Djarin x Fem! Reader
Word Count:1.3k Summary: Din teaches Reader how to shoot a blaster & Reader tries not to lose her cool in the process. Warnings/Other Notes: pre-est. relationship, teensy bit of ooc Din, M doesn't know how guns work lmao & cheesy ass ending
"Do we really have to do this? You know I'm no good at using these things..." A voice called out in the lava flats on Nevarro.
As another voice grumbled out an irritated huff, the sound of a blaster charge hitting it's target hissed through the air as the smell of smoke wafted up from the straw bundle.
Currently, the famed Mandalorian sat outside of his home, watching as his partner tried her best to hit the various targets he had set up for her to shoot at.
"Yeah, we do. After yesterday, It's obvious that you need the practice."
"Din, I can fight just fine with my billhook, so why do I need to use a gun?"
"'Cause you nearly got killed by that bounty hunter in the marketplace! He was a foot away and could've killed you if I hadn't shown up when I did." Responded Din as he shook his head in disbelief.
Scoffing at the notion, (Y/n) clicked her tounge before setting the blaster down on the stool next to Grogu, who had been sat next to Din, watching the show as he ate his blue macarons.
"I was perfectly in control of the situation! I had my hand on my weapon the entire time he chased me down! I was just... looking for an opportunity to attack, y'know?"
"Mmhm, sure, (Y/n). It really looked like you were in control when he had you backed against the wall." Din drawled with a chuckle as he leaned back in his seat.
"Oh, c'mon, gimme a break here! You, more so than anyone, know I'm just as good of a fighter as you are and would've kicked that guys ass had you not jumped in last second and shot him."
"But you didn't."
"But I would have!"
"Okay, okay, I concede. You probably would."
"Thank you. Now, quit distracting me since you wanted me to work on my blaster aim soooo badly."
"Alright then, show us what you've got in store." Din agreed as Grogu let out a happy babble.
Sputtering her lips, (Y/n) gave Din a curt nod before the blaster fire began again, bathing the small group in brief flashes of bright red.
(Y/n) attempted to hit each target with as much accuracy as possible but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't hit theirs center. Angrily growling as she kicked at the ground, she turned to face Din with a mad look on her face and motioned exasperatedly towards the targets.
"Again, (Y/n). I know you can do this." He stated as he gave her a shrug.
With a sigh that barely hid her distain for the task at hand, she spun around to shoot again, continuing until the sun met the peaks of the surrounding hills.
As soon as the Nevarro sky began to change colors- And with no further progress in hitting her mark- (Y/n) had finally reached her limit.
Trying not to throw the blaster in a fit of outrage, she took a breath through her nose as she stomped over the small porch to take a breather.
"These things are so frustrating! I don't know how you're so good with them, the recoil alone is killing my arm."
"That's just because you aren't used to it yet."
"I don't think I'll ever be used to it..." The woman stated as she rolled the aches out of her wrists.
Here, let me show you what to do about that." Din stated, pulling himself up from his chair to march over to (Y/n).
With a small roll of her eyes, (Y/n) held out the hand holding the blaster to hand it to the armored man, but to her surprise, instead of taking it from her, Din opted to hold her by the waist with one hand while guiding her arm into position with the other.
A surprised gasp left her lips as she felt the warmth of his palms seep through his gloves. Quickly turning his head in her direction, Din gently ran his hand along her side.
"You okay?"
"Uh, y-yeah. I'm great. Let's just get this over with..." Stuttered (Y/n) as she tried to fight the warmth blooming on her face.
Giving a small pat to her hip beforehand, Din lifted his hand from (Y/n)'s waist to her empty one. As he snaked his arms around her, he led it up to the handle of the blaster.
"Alright, cyar'ika, The first thing to remember about using a blaster is to keep both hands firmly on the grip. That way, the recoil won't impact you as much."
Following Din's instructions, (Y/n) held onto the weapon as securely as she could before looking back to her lover for more guidance.
"Once you do that, line up the shot with the scope. As soon as you think your positioning and stance is good, let that laser fly."
With a hesitant nod, (Y/n) spoke the former hunters instructions to herself before lifting the gun. Squeezing her eyes shut in anxiety, (Y/n) whispered an "I hope this works" before pulling the pistol's trigger.
A few seconds of silence passed as (Y/n) tried to figure out what had happened after the pull. Not a minute later, a laugh transmitted through the modulator on Din's helmet.
"Well... would you look at that?"
Finally finding the courage to open her eyes, (Y/n)'s jaw dropped as she was met with not just 1, but 2 targets hit right on the bullseye, one right through the other.
"Yes! I can't believe it!"
"See? Told you you could do it. And you did even better than expected." Din said proudly as he was very obviously grinning under his helmet.
"Yeah, yeah. Don't sound so pleased with yourself, that was all me!" (Y/n) smirked as she did a little dance.
"If you say so." Din said, slinking his way back towards their homestead.
"Wait, wait, wait, fine! I'm sorry, okay? I admit it... you did help.... a lot." (Y/n) conceded as she tenderly pulled Din back by the arm.
"I thought so."
"And.. I'm also sorry for being kind of mean to you earlier. Please don't be upset with me."
A quiet scoff was heard from inside of his helmet as Din reached down to grab both of (Y/n)'s hands in his.
"I was never upset with you in the first place, (N/n). I just worry sometimes. After what happened to Grogu, I can't bear to think of anyone else wanting to harm someone I love. I know you can handle yourself but I only want to make sure you're safe..."
"I know & I appreciate that, but as long as you're around, I know nobody could ever come close to hurting me. You'll never let anything happen to me or Grogu and I adore that."
As she smiled up at him, Din skimmed his thumb along the top of her hand. He then gently placed his helmet covered head on her shoulder while lowly whispering in her ear.
"I love you so much, mesh'la. I promise as long as I am breathing, no one's gonna harm you."
Placing a kiss upon the helmets' visor, (Y/n) tenderly wrapped her arms around the Mandalorian's frame.
"I love you too, Din. More than all the stars in the sky above."
As they embraced under the setting sun, a short gurgle was heard from below. When they parted, the pair looked down to see Grogu running towards them with arms outstretched.
The couple laughed at the sight before picking the small child up and including him in the hug.
"Yes, we love you too, Grogu!" Din told Grogu as (Y/n) peppered him with motherly smooches.
The laughter of a happy family rang into the air as the moon rose over the rocky plains of the planet they called home.

🍂 Fictober 🍂 Day 1: Cold Weather (Din Djarin x gn!Reader)
During the chilly fall season on a new planet, you go on an afternoon outing with the Mandalorian and his son. Though of course you forgot your coat.
Warnings: Fluff, found family, crushes, pre-relationship, little bit of flirting, not beta read Word Count: 1771 Pairing: Din Djarin x gn!Reader a/n: I slept for most of the first day and then my back was achy when I was trying to edit this. So its late. But it's here. And thats all that matters. Enjoy a fall afternoon outing with our fave clan of two. Day 2's prompt should be out later today (hopefully lmao).
“Grogu, we’ve been over this, you need to wear your coat.”
The child had huffed at the Mandalorian’s words. His large ears lowering, as he frowned and shook his head. You had watched them be trapped in this standoff for quite some time now. Neither father nor son wanted to budge. It was starting to get colder on this planet in recent days. But despite the chill—and despite his fathers lecturing—the little one had been determined to take his coat off any chance he got.
This had been his third time taking off the coat while hoping that neither of you would notice. Din had always been overprotective though, and he had been even more observant. He always had a keen eye for noticing these things, and there was nothing the child—or you—could seem to get past him.
“It’s getting colder out, and I don’t want you getting sick.” Din had tried reasoning with him. “You don’t want to get sick. Right kid?”
Grogu had huffed again. He pouted up to his father before trying to look past him over to you sitting on the bench nearby. Clearly he hoped to rally in your support to his losing battle, and most days those wide pleading eyes of his would convince you to his side in a heartbeat. Unfortunately for the child though, today you found yourself agreeing with the Mandalorian. As you had also caught yourself wishing you had remembered to bring your own coat this chilly afternoon.
Discovering that you wouldn’t be helping him, Grogu had huffed one more time, before finally allowing Din to bundle him back in the coat. The pout he wore as his father buttoned him up making you want to chuckle.
“See? It’s not so bad.” Din had patted the little one’s head after he finished with the last button. Although Grogu only sent a frown back his way, before toddling off back to the leaf pile he was playing in earlier.
The Mandalorian had watched Grogu from where he kneeled for a moment. Though soon he had stood to come back and sit next to you on the bench. He had given you a small nod as he sat, and you had returned it with your own smile. A comfortable silence had fallen between you two then, as you watched the child explore and play in the little clearing. Despite not being pleased with the coat he wore, Grogu still seemed to be enjoying himself at least. He had been throwing leaves here and there. Giggling and laughing to himself as he did so.
“I don’t understand why he doesn’t want to wear it.” After some time Din had been the first to speak, as he shifted a bit awkwardly next to you. “He was so happy picking it out in the market a few days ago, but now he wants nothing to do with it.”
You gave him a shrug. “He’s probably just not used to it—that’s all—give him some time.”
“You think so?”
“Yeah, sometimes kids are just picky with these things.” You said smiling again as you watched the child chase down a frog, struggling to keep up in his puffy jacket. “He’ll get used to it eventually.”
Din had let out a bitter sigh, but you could hear the smile in his words. “Yeah you’re right.”
“I usually am.”
He had snorted at that reply, and quickly the two of you fell back into silence. The only sound once again being that of the child's happy geal and the birds singing their sweet tunes. Another breeze had swept through, rustling the leaves and sending an icy chill to roll down your spine. Once again you had found yourself wishing you hadn’t forgotten your own coat, as you shivered and shuddered with every gust of wind that passed.
“Cold?” Din’s question had nearly made you jump, and you looked over to find him looking at you with a tilt of his helmet.
“A little.” You admitted with another shiver, now feeling a bit embarrassed while under the Mandalorian’s gaze. “I honestly didn’t think it would be this cold when we left earlier.”
He had hummed in understanding and went back to watching the child for a moment. You went back to doing so as well. Thinking that had been the end of the discussion, though soon the heavy weight that rested over your shoulders proved otherwise. The cape—his cape—that he tucked around your shivering form had enveloped you in an instant warmth. The cozy fabric making itself the perfect barrier for you from cold.
No wonder he wore this thing all the time—it was stylish and warm.
“There.” He murmured in a hushed tone, as he smoothed out some of the wrinkles in the fabric, and adjusted it around you a little more snuggly. “That should help you stay warm.”
“Thank you.” Your voice had struggled to speak, as you couldn’t help but feel yourself grow shy.
Din had been so close to you as he fixed the cape. His leg had brushed with yours at every movement, and if it weren’t for the helmet that shielded his face, you would have felt how his breath fanned your cheeks. He hadn’t seemed to realize it though until the two of you shared a glance. Your eyes locked to one another, and mere inches apart. Only then did he seem to catch himself. Clearing his throat as he pulled away and averted his gaze. A mumbled apology quickly leaving him as he did.
“Keep it till we get back.” He didn’t dare look at you as he spoke, crossing his arms over his chest awkwardly. Although you couldn’t help but notice how his leg still seemed to brush with yours every now and then. “I don’t need you getting sick either.”
You only nodded. Smiling to yourself a little, and snuggling further into the cape. Your heart feeling like it would jump out of your chest at any moment.
“You know…” He continued quietly, his voice trailing and words a bit teasing, as he had looked at you from the corner of his eye with the tilt of his helmet. “You’re just like the kid with not wanting to wear a coat.”
You gave a little laugh at his words, unable to deny his claim. “Guess I’m a bad influence then, huh?”
“No. I wouldn’t say that.” He shook his head while giving a small chuckle himself, and glancing away from you to watch the child again. “I’d say the opposite actually. You’re a great influence on the kid.”
“You think so?”
“Of course! He adores you…” Din had almost seemed to pause in thought before allowing himself to finish. “We both adore you. Things wouldn’t be the same without you around.”
There was another flutter in your chest at his words, and suddenly it wasn’t just the cape that gave you warmth. The two of you had looked to one another, unable to stop yourselves from leaning closer, as the air between you had seemed to shift. It had been hard to deny the feelings that both of you were beginning to feel for one another lately. And moments like these had only seemed to make it even harder.
“Patuu!”
The sound from Grogu had broken you both from the trance, and you both looked to find him standing before you two now. The smile he wore bright, as he held out his hands for you to see what he had found. It had been acorns—of course—the child had been fascinated with them since arriving to this planet.
“Oh! Is this for me?” The child had beamed up at you at the question when you realized he held one out to you, and with a smile you took the acorn. “What a lovely little acorn! Thank you Grogu.”
Grogu had let out a happy noise at your acceptance of his gift. His eyes bright with excitement as he watched you look over the acorn. Pleased with seeing your approval, he glanced at the other acorn still in his hand, and then looked to the Mandalorian at your side.
“Do I get one too?” Din seemed to perk up, but any hope he had died quickly as Grogu soon sent a glare his way at the question, before turning to waddle rather grumpily away back to his leaf pile.
“I think he’s still mad about the coat.” You barely managed to stop the laugh that threatened to spill from your lips at the sight.
“Yeah.” The Mandalorian almost sounded like he had been pouting, and based on how his shoulders had sunk you wouldn’t put him past it. “I guess he is”
“Oh don’t worry Din.” You patted his shoulder gently. Trying to reassure him.“He’ll forgive you soon.”
“He can be pretty stubborn.” He mumbled back. Sounding utterly defeated.
You gave a teasing hum. Nudging him with your arm a little. “He’s just like his dad then.”
“I’m not stubborn.” He had tried to argue, but any defense he had fell quickly at the look you sent his way. “I’m only stubborn when I need to be.”
The two of you shared another small laugh at that before falling back into that familiar silence and watching over the child play. The three of you would spend the rest of the afternoon out there. Only leaving when Din would finally decide it had been time to pack up, and head back to the ships. Grogu had almost fought with him over it, but unlike with the coat, he had quickly been won over with the promise of food.
Though it wouldn’t be until the next day where the little one would finally seem to have forgiven his father. This time when you three went to leave for the afternoon outing he did not fight the Mandalorian over the coat. Instead he let his father bundle him up with little complaint. Babbling in bits of gibberish, and pulling out the acorn he had found the other day. Handing it to Din with a bright smile before immediately waddling off in the direction of the clearing.
“See, Din?” You smiled at him, as you both began walking to follow behind the child. “I told you he’d forgive you.”
He had looked over the acorn. The smile he wore hidden behind the helmet. “Yeah, you were right.”
“I usually am.” You had gone to laugh, but an icy breeze had swept through as you spoke, and instead you could only seem to shiver while Din had chuckled.
Of course you had forgotten your coat again.

Electric (Din Djarin x Reader) Pt.1

Pairing: Din Djarin x F!Reader
Summary: You, Grogu’s teacher, meet his father, Din, for the first time.
Words: 558
A|N: If you can guess the story ‘you’ are reading to the children, I will love you forever. HEHEHE... Also having issues with title, and it's is all I could come up with, lmao. I don't have luck with fanfics. If you have a better title, I am open to suggestions lol.
“There are many kinds of joy, but they all lead to one: the joy to be loved.” - from some children's book.
The school day is over, and you decide to read a book to the children before they leave. You usually read to them at this time, and so far, they've enjoyed the book in the past week or two. “Bastian made many other wishes and had many other amazing adventures before he finally returned to the ordinary world,” you say, watching the attentive children who are excited for more. You close the book. “But that’s… another story.” The young students beg for another story from the same book.
“I’m sorry, that’s the end.”
“But Miss, it sounds like there might be more,” a child says.
You shake your head incredulously. There may be another book in the series, but you haven’t seen or heard of it yet. “Perhaps one day, I will read it again but for now, the day has ended and I’m sure your parents are anxious for your return.” The children scatter, gathering their books, and saying goodbye to their teacher.
The school on Nevarro used to have a droid teaching the children, but it unexpectedly combusted. Greef Karga chose you for the replacement – at least for now. Many parents are concerned with the sudden replacement with a human, but Karga assured them it might be a nice change for the children.
You spot a small green alien named Grogu, glancing at you with its beady black eyes like he is a bit confused. All you know about him is that he has a father, and so far no mother to speak of. Grogu is a baby yet you can tell he is a lot smarter than he looks, always remaining quiet in class when it is in session, and staying attentive. “I’m sure he will be here soon,” you reassure him. Grogu coos, as you set him down on your desk.
Not a moment sooner does the door slide open and a man in silver, beskar armor appears before you. Grogu immediately reacts, jumping into the man’s arms. You recognize the armor as Mandalorian. You thought you heard rumors of a Mandalorian living in Nevarro but you were not quite sure how true those rumors were. “Hey, little guy, sorry I was late,” the Mandalorian says, holding the infant close. He looks from Grogu to you.
You nod at him, smiling. “You must be Grogu’s father.”
“I am,” he says. “You are the new teacher, I take it?”
“Yeah, Greef Karga hired me not too long ago,” you say, holding out your hand to shake his. The Mandalorian looks at your hand for a moment, as though he were contemplating what to do with it. Eventually, his gloved hand meets yours in a handshake. Through this, you cannot help but feel the electricity in his touch. “Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise,” he says, tilting his head in a nod.
As he turns to leave, you watch him hold Grogu tightly. You never thought you’d see a Mandalorian care for a child the way he does.
A few moments later of you catching your breath after meeting him, you realize Grogu forgot the handout you gave to every student before they left. It’s for a parent-teacher meeting, an idea you came up with before starting the job.
Will you travel to his or wait to give the handout tomorrow?
To be continued.....

I’m probably gonna have to write a fanfic about this because they’ll never say it. But since Star Wars VII-IX largely ignored Anakin’s character arc in favor of obsessing over Darth Vader, and Luke, Leia, and Ben/Kylo are all dead now… I hope somebody finally understands Anakin’s lesson: Why he was the balance, the one that eventually saved the day.
Anakin was the Jedi who loved.
Even at his darkest, as Vader, he was driven to violence because he loved too hard. During and before the Clone Wars, he was put into a dogmatic, oppressive, militaristic religious order that prized unhealthy emotional suppression and was forced to watch it hurt and drive away all of his loved ones—Shmi, Ahsoka, Padmé and their children; and to a certain extent, the clones he bonded with, Obi Wan (though Satine’s death), and countless others. He cared for them, it hurt him too much—and instead of receiving something like therapy to handle his insecure attachment trauma, he got a healthy helping of PTSD. But in the end, with Luke on the second Death Star, he saved the Galaxy because he loved his son and his daughter.
Nobody learned that lesson in the sequels—at least not from his story. (You can make arguments about Reylo completing that cycle a bit, but before we got that, the Palpatine mess meant they first took a giant shit on his storyline with Ben learning hatred instead of love from Vader’s memory.) So I would really, really love it if Ahsoka could be the one to learn. She was afraid to train Grogu because of this fallacy that Anakin’s attachments were the problem, not the Order itself—she and Luke both made him choose between Din Djarin and further training. But she could learn from both Kanan and Anakin if she wanted.
His lines about it in Attack of the Clones were cringe af attempts to hit on Padmé ofc, lmao. But Anakin was right even then: The Jedi should be all about love. And I would like to think him loving her—her learning that even after all the pain, her big brother had loved & believed in her, all these years he’s been gone/one with the Force—would help drive her back to courage.

i cant get over how they really thought mando s3 would to over well. there’s just no real way they actually thought most viewers gaf about bo katan enough for her to take the leading spot and din djarin (the actual main character) having no arc, growth, or anything of purpose.
it’s just so baffling to push aside the main character in favor of another character who had only been in a total of 2 episodes before this season. i’m so serious when i say i’m not interested in seeing bo katan or really any of the mandos in s3 ever again. after 3 shows of absolute shit writing i just have had enough with her in particular lmao. like i’m sick of things happening to her with no build up and the viewers are just supposed to roll with it. a character across three different shows and in each show she’s fighting someone different to become mand’alor. ENOUGH‼️‼️‼️
and i think the part that made s3 even more grueling was the complete lack of chemistry din and bo had. i was excited to see s3 to see DIN, and to see how his story would progress - he had no progression, and most of his scenes were with a character who he has no chemistry with. i’m not even talking about romance because i don’t think that’s what they were trying to do in s3 at all, they didn’t even have chemistry as friends. their scenes made me feel uncomfortable af and by episode 6 I was skipping around the episodes to avoid the awkward scenes.
in the end the entire season felt awkward because this show has always been about din djarin and grogu first and foremost, and they were both noticeably pushed to the side this time in favor of a character whose had their chance multiple times. if they want to focus on bo katan, then they need make a show about her and not just decide she’s the main character now on another character’s show. and i need people to stop with the “the mandalorian was never about only din djarin/it’s called the mandalorian not din djarin” bullshit because y’all know DAMN WELL din djarin has been the lead since s1. it opened with him and has followed HIM since. even in s2 when a bunch of characters were introduced, it still felt like it was his show and he had an actual arc. it wasn’t until s3 when he was noticeably not the focus anymore.
anyway. i’m happy s3 ended with him not bothering to say goodbye to anyone and just going to nevarro with only grogu so they can start nazi hunting for the new republic. this allows them to more easily get involved in thrawn’s mess and the ghost crew. i much rather him just interact with ahsoka, hera, sabine, zeb and ezra instead tbh like for one i already know din has ACTUAL chemistry with ahsoka and their scenes don’t make me feel uncomfortable so that’s already a plus. and then grogu can be BFFs with jacen or something. just don’t try that shit you did in s3 ever again jon favreau im so serious

2. Ao3 word count? - 395,068 ..... I've got a wip that's almost over 100k but it's also been there for years so I doubt that'll change anytime soon
3. What fandoms do you write for? - of the fics I have on ao3, I have written for detroit become human, star wars, resident evil, assassin's creed, and the last kingdom. The fandoms I've written for that are not on my ao3 include lotr/the hobbit, bbc sherlock, bbc merlin, marvel, voltron legendary defender, percy jackson universe, and whatever the Carry On by rainbow rowell fandom is called. Most of those I will never ever write for again lmao
4. What are your top five fics by kudos? - In order:
Sapphire Moonlight (Tequila Sunrise) (Serennedy)
We Look So Good (Reed900)
Hold Fast, the Suns Will Rise (Stay) (Dincobb) (also, my first fic ever posted, and still the fic I hold most dearly in my heart to this day)
We Are Home (Hank and Connor family content)
Tomato Soup (Serennedy)
5. Do you respond to comments? - every single one. I'm obsessed with comments. I have them all saved and stored so I can reread them at any time. Thank you everyone who has ever commented I love you
6. What fic did you write the angstiest ending for? - I only write angst with a happy ending. But I did write You Should Have Killed Me for a friend's dbh x hunger games simulator result and it had an angsty ending by result of being a hunger games simulator.
7. What fic did you write the happiest ending for? - I write many fics w happy endings, but I personally think my fic series Din and Grogu | the Clan of Two Trilogy has the happiest ending because it happened against all odds. It's a fic about Din and Grogu's found family (before BoBF and Mando s3 came out, so it's not canon accurate) and it ends meaningfully to me.
8. Do you get hate on fics? - I have before, but it was all bullshit that showed me the person commenting didn't actually read what I wrote but chose to get mad at something that didn't exist. So it was discarded easily. Otherwise, I've had people try to tell me how to write things, but I ignore them all
9. Do you write smut? - yes. badly.
10. Crossovers? - I wrote a dincobb fic that was set in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, with Din as Kassandra and Cobb as Anais. I also started a serennedy fic set in the detroit: become human universe but never got anywhere close to finishing it.
11. Ever had a fic stolen? - not that I know of lol.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? - I had someone ask to translate one of my fics, and I said yes, but I don't think they've done so yet, which is fine. Other than that, no. But I'd be honoured!
13. Ever co-wrote a fic before? - I started a dincobb fic with a friend years ago but we never got around to finishing it. Someday I still hope to.
14. What's your all time favourite ship? - that's genuinely impossible to pick tbh I've had so many that rewired my brain. top three are probably bagginshield, simarkus, and shadowzel, not in any particular order.
15. What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? - ehhhhh probably the klance fic I started when I was like 15. I don't go to voltron anymore and literally couldn't care less about it. In fact I actively hate it.
16. What are your writing strengths? - I've been told that I'm good at characterisation and plot. I think I suck at plot severely. As for characterisation, I study characters really hard and take a long time to write fics so they remain in character so I'm glad people appreciate that. I also prefer writing dialogue to anything else.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? - Writing. haha I mean exposition.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language? I have before, I find it fun but also intimidating.
19. First fandom you wrote for? - The Hobbit :') my first ever fic was a bagginshield fic I started when I was 13. I still mean to finish it someday.
20. Favourite fic you've written? - *sighs* I guess I should say Another Time. It was the most fun to write, and everyone's responses have made all the difficulties of writing it endlessly worth it. It took me months but I'm so happy I finished it, and I'm working on p3 rn I PROMISE. But again the fic I hold most dearly in my heart is still Hold Fast, the Suns Will Rise (Stay)

character bashing in sw fics is so funny to me bc it's always like... "well my blorbo may have commited war crimes BUT AT LEAST HE WASN'T A BAD JEDI DAD" (i've been reading a lot of qui-gon stuff and it is rough out there... people always complain about qui-gon leaving obi-wan on a war-torn planet with child soldiers but they never ask themselves if obi-wan had bad vibes or was unpleasant to be around). u r literally writing about star wars characters. every one of them sucks. it's part of loving star wars is to accept all your favorite characters are horrible except maybe like... grogu. grow up.
Excuse you, Grogu ate that frog lady's eggs which is clearly worse than any warcrime.
No but seriously the shit Qui-Gon gets just perplexes me. There is so much good stuff to dig into with his character and instead people just skip right over that and go straight for the bashing. He can be such a compelling character!
Even just excluding the Jude Watson books and just going of canon, there's so much.
Like, just the implications of being trained by Dooku, the kind of childhood that would have been, and thinking about the reasons Dooku had for joining the Sith. That was his father figure, that was what he grew up in the shadow of! Makes me insane to think about the kind of person that would create!
Or the reverse, the kind of person Qui-Gon would have to be to shape the Obi-Wan we know.
Like, just the things you can fill in this character with from the negative space around him.
If you want to make Qui-Gon into a bad dude you're gonna have to try harder to sell me on it lmao.
Another character that gets bashed on so much is Mace Windu and like, I'm not going to touch on the racism present in that but like. He can be an antagonist in the narrative without being written as an outright dick, you know? His character works really well as a source of conflict in a story but you gotta put the work in to make it make sense for who he is and his motivations instead of just making him shitty for shitty sake. I hate how often fandom puts Mace in stuff and makes him 'guy who is a dick to Anakin for no reason' instead of making him a complex and compelling character with honestly pretty valid reasons for his tension with Anakin. (also i hc that just being around Anakin gives Mace shatter-point induced migraines so Mace can't help but be a little snappish anytime he's near Anakin for more than 2.5 seconds. But because Anakin's brain is a traumatized rat on a wheel spinning round and round in a self destructive spiral, he takes Mace bitching at him as a sign that Mace hates his very existence when really it's like Mace looks at Anakin adn thinks: that motherfucker (affectionate))
Sorry- my sleep meds are hitting hard so I am probably writing gibberish
#mmm the screen is starting to get blurry i should probably go to bed now#going to be real fun to see if any of this makes sense when i wake up tomorrow

Never Have I Ever: djarnakin :))))))))))))))
For this ask meme
Asdfghjkl

Haven't written it () but i suppose what i'd do is steal sheevy's victory lap out from under him by having anakin get kix-ed: someone, either a not-in-the-loop seppie or just a nondescript republic enemy, gets the jump on anakin and carbonites him for transport. Somehow *handwaves* the transport gets lost or maybe the ones who have him store him away and then get murderized before doing anything with him. No one can find him and it becomes this great republic tragedy and actually very little changes beyond not having darth vader at his side; he still activates the chips and destroys the jedi order, the empire still rises.
(Even the twins still get split up and raised by the organas and larses because padmé twigs that sheev is, yaknow, evil and decides that it's too dangerous to raise the children of anakin skywalker when sheev definitely knows that her kids would be his. So instead she pretends she lost her one child in childbirth and instead smuggles them off naboo and to their chosen caretakers; she does in fact have a relationship with them over the years, she just can't publically raise them, especially as a key figure of the rebellion.)
The Hero With No Fear becomes a tragic figure to rally behind, something something a martyr for the republic possibly even removed by palpatine himself for how he'd no doubt oppose the creation of the empire. Cut to 30 years later and din djarin the mandalorian stumbles into wherever carbanakin ended up. Maybe grogu is the one who decarbs him? And of course it's not like djarin is gonna know who anakin is, on sight or in general.
Honestly anakin probably (metaphorically) swings first, because last he knew he was surrounded by enemies and honestly carbonite defrosting has gotta be hell on the system. So anakin comes out swinging and djarin's honestly pretty used to that. They duke it out for a minute until grogu gets distressed enough to separate them using the force, and then suddenly this random feral human throwing djarin around like a tin can and taking hits that would drop the average trandoshan constitution softens into a confused young man asking djarin's baby why he feels older, why the whole universe feels so dark and cold and empty. And like, djarin's not made of stone, clearly this guy is having a rough time and? He knows grogu somehow?? So they bring him back to their ship (rip razor crest i miss you buddy) and let him catch up on the whole damn galaxy and it's. Not pretty.
I don't think i'm a skilled enough writer to make a compelling narrative about, like, grieving the loss of literally everyone and everything you've known while also forging new connections to support you through the process but like. That's what would happen next lmao. And eventually they make out about it idk. Grogu deserves two dad(die)s.
#Also anakin may or may not permanently lose his sight from the janky carbonite but DEFINITELY can't see SHIT when he first gets defrosted#Never have i ever ask meme#Answered asks#By apples#Dead-cowboy#Star wars#Anakin skywalker#Din djarin#Djarakin#Ask meme

WIP Title Game! oh good lord
rules: in a new post, post the names of all the files in your wip folder regardless of how nondescriptive or ridiculous. let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet and tell us about it!
thanks @allyunabridged for the tag! Lmao I stared down the barrel of not one, but two google drives to gather these and all I can say is
😬
IN AN ORDER ONLY THE GODS UNDERSTAND:
The Twilit Gate (BG3, when in want of more fey bullshit in your BG3, do it yourself!!! TavxAstarionxGalexliterally everyone i'm gay alright???)
Island (The Guest/손 AU, horror and survivalism; Hwa Pyung, Choi Yoon, and Gil Young follow Park Hong Joo's and Park Il Do's machinations out to open sea, to an island with long forgotten history where the real struggle for survival begins.)
But For Grace (SW:Preq's, modern-character in GFFA aka "what to do when you accidentally change things and the Chosen One dies?", started as a silly question but now I'm committed; Qui-Gon Jinn lives; what would happen in a galaxy without Anakin Skywalker?)
The Mage's War (DA2 + DA:I, what if Bethany Hawke was the Herald, Modern/Avvar OC, playing Fade chicken with the Dread Wolf nbd, put on my tinfoil hat for this one re: the Fade, the Abyss/Void, Forgotten Ones, etc.)
In God's Eye (Vampyr, human!Jonathan, ekon!McCullum, Mary lives, I'm a hobby WWI & Spanish Flu researcher so hold your britches I have FEELINGS)
For Want Of Two (Vampyr, wanted more mythological beings & nemrod lore so I'll do it myself gdi, put-that-thing-back-where-you-found-it-or-so-help-me-god.gif ; JxMcCxOC)
Lights All Hung On Nothing (Star Wars Preq's to Clone Wars era, modern-character-in-SW with a big twist, Force + time fuckery, Ani + Obi focus, the butterfly effect changes everything)
The 72nd Cycle (SW: Mandalorian, AU - Grogu is not the only Force sensitive prisoner Gideon had captured. Without room in his ship for multiple students, Luke tags along, not expecting the sad Mando's ride Boba Fett (w h a t) to show up and offer the poor guy use of his bacta tank; well, soon-to-be-his. He just has to kill its current owner, Bib Fortuna, first. You know. On Tatooine(WHAT!!). Meanwhile, on Tattooine: Cobb Vanth gets the nagging feeling his life is about to become much more stressful.)
A Heavy Thing (KOTOR, amnesiac Revan works a shitty food service job on Taris and definitely isn't a Jedi/Sith/Soldier, I mean, clearly. Slice of life becomes tragedy becomes adventure becomes mystery becomes ??? RevanxCanderousxCarth DON'T LOOK AT ME)
Life, Happening (The Shining/Doctor Sleep introspective piece on Danny Torrance, life & death, what it means to be gone, and not gone.)
Led To Water (Mandalorian, Din takes off the armor having broken his Creed and, unsure what to do next, returns to Kuiil's homestead to brood and sweat manfully through his existential crisis; his friends help him through it.)
Mando'ad'ika (Mandalorian/Original SW movies, The Mandalorian is taken into custody and now Leia has to deal with a sweet but stressed frog lady, a green gremlin with too much Force power, and this intimidating tin can who won't budge. Since Han laughed at her, she decides to make it his problem, too.)
Time Travel, & Other Ways To Die (Mandalorian/SW:Bounty Hunter video game, Din & Jango centric, whilst trying to get to Grogu on his magical big rock, Din & Grogu end up chucked through time onto an outlaw space station. Jango Fett's no good very bad day begins. Coincidentally, it coincides with Din Djarin's SUPER no good very bad day. They most assuredly do not bond over this.)
I am, or was. (Dragon Age: Inquisition, a spirit takes an interest in Solas after he helps it in the Fallow Mire and begins following him around like a lost puppy. Which would be cute, if it weren't possessing more and more alarming vessels to do so. The Andrastians are starting to get a bit twitchy.)
Rookie, Shiny, Soldier, Spy (Mandalorian/Clone Wars, Din Djarin accidental time travel into the Clone Wars AU. Caught without his 'gam on a battle field and forced once again to wear trooper armor, he is Not Impressed--and why do all these guys look like Boba?)
This Prodigal Son (Hades/Dragon Age: Inq, Zagreus goes through the wrong Chaos portal. Magister Alexius finds a powerful spirit in the Fade and, as is his way, decides fuck it, we ball. Also his way, it doesn't go very well for him.)
Send me a title via ask and I'll post my favorite bit I've currently written!
Lmao this was wild to throw together given how many WIPs of age past are staring me down; these are just all the recents. Go ahead and chuck some WIPs out there if you're interested @singoallala @narwhalninja @mauverawrites @in-a-trans-like-state @terresdebrume and @jackironsides ! And if you don't/aren't currently writing, everyone loves to see the pet tax paid C:

hi bestie!!!!
I thought it was really interesting how you mentioned that iced lavender lattes are the only overlap you and Doc have as she’s not very you-coded! Which made me wonder out of all the characters you’ve written, which one feels the most you / you relate to their character & thought processes the most?
I’ve been getting clowned by my friends when I try to explain Lavender to them because Doc and I are lowkey the same person 😂😂 especially in your character description of the OCs hahaha
and it’s so funny because they don’t have any Pedro / TLOU context so they’ll be like 🤨🤨🤨 and I have to be like “LOOK LISTEN- hear me out 😭” LMAO
Overall very silly goofy but I will defend Joel & Doc until the very end 🫶
I adore your work so much thank you for writing it!! Looking forward to the rest of Yearling! ❤️❤️❤️
OMG Hi Bestie!
This is such an interesting question!
Firstly, I LOVE that you see yourself in Doc. I adore her and I think her and Joel are perfect for each other. Her gentle and caring nature makes her one of my favorite characters, I love her so much.
To answer your question, I both thought about it myself and also shopped out some of the answer lol
The character of mine I see myself most in is the one I’ve posted least about on this site but I’ve spent the most time with - Tenny from my book series. She’s way cooler and hotter and more badass than me but a lot of who she is at her core overlaps with me. Not totally, she’s far from a self insert, but she’s the one who shares the most with me.
All of my FMCs have SOME stuff that comes from me? I feel like Doc’s intense need to be loved and her willingness to put up with A LOT to feel like she matters to someone comes from me. But Doc is a lot softer and kinder than me and a lot more emotionally vulnerable. She’s also very skilled in ways that I could never be!
I’ve got Doll’s independent streak and a lot of her snark. I’m not nearly as strong as she is or as capable, though. I do have a lot of her protective qualities, too. I tried to beat up a boy who was 5 inches taller than me in high school because he talked one of my best friends into losing her virginity to him and then dumped her the next morning. (Got very mad when he wouldn’t hit me back btw)
I say all this fully aware that I don’t see myself very well? So I also asked my TLOU bestie who is the only person on the planet who has read Ace, Lavender and Beskar Doll (God bless him) and my husband, who is currently reading Beskar Doll.
Bestie said that Tenny, from my book series, is the most like me largely because of her general “I’m handling this myself” attitude. He also says I’m a bit bratty like Doll but not to her extent and that Doc is too much of a pacifist to really align with me (direct quote: If someone threatened one of your baby chicks... Doc would hesitate and mull over her hypocratic oath, and when she snaps out of her thoughts she’d see you’d already taken action and fucking tackled the perpetrator.)
The husband says he thinks Doll is somewhat like me but more who I wish I was than who I really am (not sure I agree with this, mostly on the “who I wish I was” point.) But he thinks the independence and her deep dedication to her friends is a lot like me, as is her perfectionist streak. He also says her desire to be a part of something while feeling outside of it is like me. Bonus, I love kids and am great with kids (“yeah doll with Grogu? Exactly like you.”)
As for Bambi? Basically not like me at ALL. She’s way scrappier than me, way tougher, way more of a loner. Her drive to live is also insane, I’d never do what she does to survive, I just would have no desire to. I think the only overlap with her is, if someone tells Bambi she can’t or shouldn’t do something she’s going to do it even harder on principle. She’s been fascinating to write because her headspace is so different from mine!
Anyway, I know this was super long! I hope you found it interesting! Thank you so much for reading and asking and being here. It’s so lovely to me that you see yourself in Doc and like her enough that you talk about her with your friends!
Love you!!

Okay I can't quite describe the sound of my emotions being screamed out in words the way it sounds in real life so imagine it with me (female, shrieking with excitement, full volume, 0 shame) OH MY GOOOOOOOD
When I tell you the latest pdd chapter had me SHRIEKING... reader recognising the second Din's mask is coming back into place and Din noticing she needed a minute so he took her to lunch... I SEE YOU PARALLELS I SEE YOU "THEY'VE BEEN PAYING ATTENTION TO REALLY GET TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER" I SEE YOU DEVOTION TO THE OTHER PERSON AND WANTING THEM TO FEEL AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE
Also Grogu has a sitter on Saturday huh... I fanned myself, ngl 😂 Kuiil's words of affirmation were so beautiful 🥹 also call ME Kuiil the way I am proud of these two. Honourable mention to Adrian for shooing everyone out when Din was white-knighting. I hope at some point Din finds out how much Adrian was wing-manning behind the scenes.
MORE BACKSTORY?! YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE MORE BACKSTORY. Also do I understand that CBC is fictional? Yes. Do i still want to give them a piece of my mind every time we get new details about that blasted company? ALSO YES.
Pls hear my prayer, oh dance gods: let their performance go off without a hitch!!! Let their post-performance.... *union* be as glorious as their dancing!!! Let them be a happy little family raising Grogu to be the cutest little ballet nerd ever. I want everything to be perfect for them bc it's what they deserve.
AND NOW. WE REACH WHAT, TO ME, IS THE ZENITH OF THIS CHAPTER. DIN'S SPEECH IN THE DINER? I DO NOT HAVE WORDS IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Ok so first of all not Din being so whipped FROM THE FIRST DAY!!! I loved it so much. Just him being so taken with her artistry... noticing her so deeply... and then being drawn to her bc of how she sees HIM? Stop stop stop it I could CRY!!! ALSO the way he has become more expressive, facially and verbally, bc of her? Oh my HEART. Need me a real man like this STAT.
Another week of you knocking it out of the park. You are just determined not to take it easy on the poor butterflies in my stomach that arise every time I come across ballet Din, huh? - pdd anon
PDD anon!! hello hello. I'm so sorry to be so late replying, but I have to be honest with you, I wasn't on tumblr much outside of posting for a bit. but I did read your messages when you sent them and they brought me so much joy, you have no idea.
Yes!! they see each other!! and they're both so good and noticing details, from having to dance with others, and then applying that to this relationship? just so much focus, tuned in to each other. 🧡
Adrian and Din will eventually become friends with a common interest in making sure reader is taken care for sure. Din will take all the allies he can get for that! because that's how he is.
I also want to give CBC a piece of my mind lol. be nice to this man!! they just didn't know what they had. 🤷🏻♀️
I know by now you've read the performance and probably saw that it was the thing I'm most proud of writing lately. It means a lot to me and I hope you loved it.
He was so whipped, lmao. Just head over heels, incapable of dealing with it, a mess. From the start!
Thank you so much!! As always it is an absolute delight to get your messages. 🥰

Chapter 19 - The Convert
Oh I fucking hate this one
I love seeing Coruscant but I fucking hate this episode
Is Benduday the middle of the week?
I googled it. It's not.
It's the way that these two continued to work for the Empire past the end if the war but just get a slap on the wrist
Why is Kane allowed in any sort of government role??
Why would Bo want to join the descendants of the terrorists who killed (with her help) her sister???
Chapter 20 - The Foundling
This episode is much cuter
Housemate is losing their mind over the dart scene
The burning temple still breaks my heart
The way Paz yanks his boy over
This episode is good
Chapter 21 - The Pirate

Like Din is just being so freaking gross in this episode droids very clearly have feelings
Sir Grogu
Chapter 23 - The Spies
Brendol Hux you fucking gaslighting gatekeeping girlboss I'm so happy to see you
Also Pallaeon slay king
Dude Brian mimics Domhall so well it makes me giggle
I forgot about the IG-12 plot housemate loves it
Ugh that's right we completely undermine Bo's Rebels arc
Paz saves the babby
Paazzz noooo
And none of them are actually spies lmao
Chapter 24 - The Return
Grogu saves his papa
The hallway scene is so good though
Useless Gideon clones are useless
I hate the darksaber (in live action)

HOW TO: Make a Pantone “Color of the Year” Gif
A few people have asked about my Pantone sets which use the “Color of the Year” swatch design. So, here’s a full tutorial with a downloadable template of my exact overlay! Disclaimer: This tutorial assumes you have a basic understanding of gif-making in Photoshop.
PHASE 1: PICKING A SCENE + PANTONE COLOR(S)
I’m starting with this because it’s crucial for planning your gifset as well as making sure the execution is smooth sailing. The steps in this phase won’t necessarily be literal steps but some tips for how I usually go about making a Pantone set:
1.1 – Picking a scene. Scene selection is everything. To make things easy on yourself, I suggest choosing scenes where the background is mainly ONE color — for example, a scene where the subject has a clear blue sky behind them. To make things even easier, choose a color that isn’t the same color as the subject of your gif. Like, if your subject is a human, I’d avoid using a gif with a red or yellow background unless you want to do a lot more work to mask their skin.
Rip me using a scene of green lil Grogu in green grass lmao. But I guess that goes to show you could really do this with any scene (I just did lots of masking and keyframe animations to perfect this green shade). BUT selecting your scenes wisely = a lot less work.
1.2 – Picking Pantone colors. People often ask me how I choose my colors and there are a few methods which I’ll go over below.
But note that not all Pantone colors have a cute name, or any name (fun fact: only Pantone textiles have official names and they end with TCX, TPX, or TPG).
METHOD A: Google Search “Pantone [Color]” Source: Google Easy but not always fruitful, all you do for this method is open Google and type “Pantone [insert color here].” For example, when searching for teal colors, I searched several things including: Pantone Teal, Pantone Turquoise, Pantone Blue, Pantone Green, Pantone Blue Green, etc. Then, just sift through the Google results and click on whatever comes up from the official Pantone website! Since Pantone’s site blocks some info behind a paywall, you won’t be able to get a hex code from them. But you can just screenshot the swatch from their site, put it in Photoshop, and use the eyedropper tool to figure out the color.
METHOD B: Color-Name Site Source: https://www.color-name.com/ This handy website lets you search by colors using the upper navigation bar. Or you can just type something like "magenta" or "blue pantone" or even “frog” and see what comes up lol. Color-name can put together palettes too! I like that this site also tells you the hex code of a color, which is really helpful for getting the right code to put in my overlay. Note: Not every color on this site is a Pantone textile, so not all of these names are Pantone-official names. You can tell it’s official if, in the Pantone row of the Color Codes table on the middle of the page, it has a code that’s 2 numbers, a dash, 4 numbers, and either TCX, TPX, or TPG.
METHOD C: User-Made Pantone Colors Archive Source: https://margaret2.github.io/pantone-colors/ For my Wednesday characters as Pantone colors set, it was all about matching the color name to the character’s vibe. So, before looking at the actual colors themselves, I wanted to find the perfect color names. I stumbled upon this page. The pros = it lists pretty much all of the current official Pantone names. The cons = it’s not convenient since there’s no filtering tool. You can do Command+F and search for keywords, but that’s it. I literally scrolled through this whole page for my Wednesday set and read every single name, which... I think means... something’s wrong with me /lh /hj
METHOD D: Official Pantone Color Finder Source: https://www.pantone.com/pantone-connect This is last on my list because I don’t actually recommend it. Unless you already have access to this resource from your school or work or something, I would never pay for it and it is a paid feature only. Boooo 👎 But there is a free trial (which I’ve never used), so if you want to see what it’s about, you can definitely go for it.
PHASE 2: MAKING THE BASE GIF
Again, just some super quick tips for making a gif that, I think, looks best with this kind of set — but if you’re still learning how to gif, I do have a basic gif-making tutorial here for extra guidance!
2.1 – Uncheck “Delete Cropped Pixels” before cropping your gif. When you use the crop tool, this checkbox appears in the top toolbar. Unchecking it allows you to move the positioning of your gif later on, which is handy in this case when you want to choose which part of your gif will be underneath the Pantone swatch. You can read more about this tip in my basic gif-making tutorial (linked above; Step 1.5 – Tip B).
2.2 – Make your gif 540px width. My gifs for these sets are usually 540x540px but I think 540x500px will also look good. I think it’s more impactful though to make a big gif to show off your coloring.
PHASE 3: ADDING THE PANTONE OVERLAY
3.1 – Download my template I made this template myself, so all I ask is that you don’t claim it as your own and that you give me proper insp or template credit in your caption if you decide to use it! Get the PSD with the transparent background here!
3.2 – Download the font Helvetica Neue Bold The font I use (and I’m pretty sure it’s the same font Pantone uses) is Helvetica Neue Bold, with some very specific letter spacing (which I determined by studying Pantone’s official Color of the Year Very Peri design). It’s already set in my .psd but here are specs in case: color name spacing = -40, color code spacing = -75 (sometimes I’ll do -25 for the numbers after the dash if I don’t like how tightly they’re packed together).
I uploaded Helvetica Neue Bold to my dropbox here!
3.3 – Import my overlay You can either drag the whole folder onto your gif from tab to tab or right-click the folder, select Duplicate Group, and select your gif as the destination document. Just make sure this overlay group is above your base gif!
3.4 – Fill the color swatch In my .psd, on the layer labeled “Pantone Swatch,” just grab the hex code of your chosen Pantone color and fill that layer using the Paint Bucket tool! I’ve already put a layer mask on the layer for you so it fits perfectly inside the square outline.
If you’re using my .psd, all the blend mode settings are already in place! I usually set the colored square behind the Pantone logo to the Color blend mode, but sometimes, I prefer the way Hue looks. It’s up to you!
You can also adjust the drop shadow settings to make your text more visible as needed. The layers are arranged in this order so the drop shadows don’t interfere with the semi-transparent part of the colored swatch.
3.5 – Insert the color name and code My .psd has two versions to choose from: (1) a color name that fits on one line and (2) a color name that requires two lines. Use the one that applies to your color name and simply type that and color code into the corresponding text layers!
Note 1: Pantone doesn’t keep their font size uniform for every color of the year. They’ll sometimes shrink the text to fit longer names, but I like being consistent. So, I use this one font size for all my colors.
Note 2: My template has all the text left-justified and matching the starting point of the P in Pantone. BUT, sometimes the gif looks better if you nudge the text a bit so it looks more centered. Use your discretion when aligning the text!
Note 3: Btw, you definitely don’t have to use the TCX/TPG codes like me. (I’m a nut and there’s no way I’ll ever do a Pantone set and not use those types of codes to maintain uniformity across this series lol.) I’ve seen others do sets inspired by mine using different color codes or even just the hex code itself!
PHASE 4: COLORING THE BASE GIF
The key here is to make a majority of your gif feature your chosen Pantone swatch. If you’re really smart with your scene selections, this should be a breeze! If you’re stubborn like me and want to use specific scenes with the opposite color of your chosen Pantone swatch, there will be a bit more color manipulation involved... However, this isn’t a coloring tutorial, so again, I’m going to give some tips and resources that will hopefully help you out!
4.1 – Color matching. Now that you have the Pantone swatch on your gif, you should be able to reference that center square set to Color/Hue to match the rest of your gif to that color. Feel free to paint a little blob of your color onto another layer anywhere on your gif so you can refer to it closer over a specific part of your gif. For example, I put a little circle over Grogu’s head to see how closely I matched Pantone’s Peapod color, then I tweaked my adjustment layers a bit more until the colors matched near perfectly and I couldn’t tell where that blob begins or ends. The left is the solid color and the right is set to the blending mode Color (like the square):
4.2 – Moving the base gif. This isn’t really about coloring... but remember when I said to uncheck “Delete Cropped Pixels” in Step 2.1? Well, here’s your chance to adjust your canvas and move the gif around so the exact part you want under the color swatch is in the right position. I personally think these kinds of sets are more impactful when you put a differently colored part of your gif under the swatch so you can see through it and the difference is clearer. In my example, I put Grogu in the center so the green box would cover some of his brown potato sack robe.
4.3 – Color manipulation. Color manipulation is when you transform your media’s original color grading into a completely different color. The Grogu gif isn’t a great example because the original scene was already a green-yellow color:
I mean, the difference is still pretty drastic but that’s mostly because my file was HDR and washed out as a result.
So, here’s an example I made using a gif from my first Pantone set for ITSV (Im not doing this demo to the Grogu gif because it’d be too much work to manipulate a green background with a green subject. This ITSV scene is perfect bc the majority of it is blue while the subjects are mostly red.)
For the “basic coloring,” I did everything as I normally would: mostly levels and selective color layers.
For color manipulation, my fav adjustment layer is Hue/Saturation (those are the screenshots that are on the gif above). When you’re smart with your scene selection, it’s pretty easy to manipulate colors with one Hue/Sat layer because you usually only need to tamper with 1-2 colors and, hopefully, they shouldn’t interfere with skin tones (obviously you’ll do other layers to further enhance your gif’s brightness, contrast, etc. — but I just mean the heavy lifting usually only takes me one layer with a good scene choice).
All you have to do is figure out what color the majority of your gif is, toggle to that color’s channel, and fiddle with the hue slider. In the gif above, you can see that I played with both the Blue and Cyan channels. Here’s why:
If I only adjust the Blue hue slider, I get those speckles of cyan peaking through in the gif above. Unless you’re working with completely flat colors — like 2D animation with zero shading/highlights — a color is never just one, solid color. Blue isn’t just blue, it may have some cyan. Purple isn’t just purple, I often have to toggle the Blue channel too. So, yeah, be mindful of that!
I’ll sometimes go in with the brush tool and paint over some areas of my gif to really smooth out the color and make it uniform. When I do that, I just set that painted layer to the Color blend mode. Some of the resources below go into that technique a bit more!
4.4 – Coloring resources. While not all of these tutorials cover the same type of color manipulation I did in my gifs, I think the principles are similar and would be helpful to anyone who’s a beginner: – color manipulation tutorial by usergif/me: I go a bit more in depth here (I think lol) – how to change the background of any gif by usergif/fionagallaqher: a great tutorial for using keyframes so you can manipulate the background of a gif with lots of motion – bea’s color isolation gif tutorial by nina-zcnik: this tutorial has more tips about hue/saturation layers as well as masking your subject – elio’s colouring tutorial by djarin: this tutorial shows a lot of examples of first manipulating the colors then brushing over the gif with a matching color for extra coverage
And just one last note on coloring, I always try to appreciate gifs with the mentality that “good” coloring is 100% subjective. One of the only things I would classify as “bad” coloring is when you whitewash or [color]wash someone’s skin tone. So, as long as you keep the integrity of your subjects’ natural skin — especially if they’re a POC — you should feel good about your coloring, because it’s yours and you worked hard! <3
PHASE 4: EXPORT
That’s it!! If you work in Video Timeline like me, just convert from Timeline back to Frames, export your gif, and voila!
Easy PEAsy. 🥁
If you have specific questions about this tutorial, my ask box is open <3
Also, check out these other Pantone-inspired sets by my friends @nobodynocrime (Mulan set) and @wakandasforever (Ponyo set)! There are so many ways to use Pantone colors in your set, so I hope this inspires you to create something beautifully colorful <3
