scopOphilic_documentary_729 - scopOphilic1997 presents never before seen photographs from September 11, 2001 shot on film.
8:46am - American Airlines flight 11 attacks North Tower of World Trade Center.
It was a warm, late summer morning in New York City. These images are in chronological order from that morning and afternoon (Greenwich ave/Christopher street, Canal street, & Houston st pier in the West Village/Soho.)
Some moments in life are permanently implanted into our brain. A group of close friends gathered that night as we speculated on whether this was our last night on earth.
This 9-11 series were the last photos I ever shot on film. All seven sets of photos in this series have never been shown until today.

The New York State Urban Development Corporation saw in the piers a sacrificial milieu of impurity and devaluation. Rivera described the event as follows: “It’s called a sweep. Not even a fucking eviction. A sweep, like we’re trash.” [...]
The clearance operation of the piers took place under the New York Slum Clearance Commission and Law and its frothy utopian verbiage of “sanitizing” an environment [...] unsuitable for human life. [...] The demolition of the piers showed the violent clash of two confronting forms of urbanism. [...] [Manhattan’s] working class industrial base was transformed into a corporate and service-based economy and New York State Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, together with city planners, implemented policies to frame Manhattan as a place for work, but not living. [...] The rhetoric used by public and private officials to get rid of the piers was embedded in medical metaphors, [...] "blight" [...]. At the same time, these discussions were imbricated with racial depictions and xenophobic targets: most of the constructions beleaguered in this operation were inhabited or used by black people, Latin Americans, migrants, and displaced communities. [...]
---
The piers thrived with life. [...]
The notion of the piers as insalubrious areas that needed to be wiped out gained traction in the 1980s - during the peak of the HIV/AIDS crisis [...]. This narrative concerning the piers was active in New York City until the early 2000s, until Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor George Pataki opened the Greenwich Village segment of Hudson River Park on May 30, 2003. The highway was finally demolished [...] and a series of gates were erected to keep Pier 45 closed after 1am [...]. The previous residents of these spaces were just routine casualties. The new proposal opted for a unitary, straightforward, apparently open but constantly surveilled set of facilities, where constant circulation (by car, skate, bike, foot) was central, and framed the conception of the piers as a passing point. This contrasted the labyrinthic and fragmented former setting, with multitudes of hidden spaces that provided a sense of privacy and safety [...].
---
The history of the piers runs parallel to the history of the LGBTQIA+ movement in New York. This is where Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson decided to locate the first installment of [...] (STAR) in 1970 [...], a year after the Stonewall riots. [...] [D]uring the 1973 Gay Pride Rally [...], [Rivera] asked the movement to support [racialized, trans, gender non-conforming, homeless, and incarcerated people] [...] instead of just focusing on cis "men and women that belong to a white middle class club" [...] [which entailed] the negation of alternative forms of living [...].
Members of these groups were ostracized and deprived of typical considerations during the outbreak of an epidemic: protocols of announcement, transparency in information, research, and measure-taking. Meanwhile, the communities that congregated around the piers, and the piers themselves, helped spread information about AIDS, made transparent the available data, and offered care among affected communities. Groups and associations like STAR, Gay Men's Health Crisis, and Gran Fury were essential in this effort. [...] This environmental activism, where kin was formed [...], happened in places like the piers. [...] They were an escape from the constant scrutiny of authorities and from homophobic attacks [...].
---
AIDS' first name, GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency), as well as the common “gay plague” and “gay cancer” epithets, strengthened the idea of a specifically gay disease related to a certain environment-specific villain. Journalists, following the views of public health authorities, blamed the epidemic on [...] the places gay people frequented. [...] Physicians thus described a spatial configuration located in downtown Manhattan [...] which [...] posed a threat [...]. This claim had terrible consequences for the activist spaces and urban fabrics that confronted the epidemic [...]. The remnants of Pier 45 were demolished. The activist history of these places was “cleared.” [...]
---
When Sylvia Rivera shouted to the authorities “stay away from my house!” while being evicted, “house” not only referred to the physical construction of her home. She was confronting teleological progress with the project of a[n] [...] assemblage based on [...] mutual caring [...] and defying colonial narratives of race, sex, gender, and nature. The territorialization of epidemics, identities, and citizenship not only shape the built environment, but the built environment shapes them in return. Architecture thereby assumed the form of an expanded spatial practice [...].
When Rivera was trying to save her home from demolition, she said, “there’s so many fucking buildings in this fucking Manhattan.” What New York City was losing with the demolition of Pier 45 was not just a series of dwellings. It was losing a complex ecosystem of coexistence.

The Bard of Nonconformity: Bob Dylan’s Enduring Legacy
Bob Dylan’s enigmatic nature, profound lyrical depth, and genre-defying musicality have long fascinated audiences, offering a rich tapestry for exploration. His life, artistic evolution, and far-reaching influence on music, literature, and society are intricately woven, reflecting the complex interplay between personal heritage, environmental stimuli, and cultural impact.
Born Robert Zimmerman to Russian Jewish immigrants in Duluth, Minnesota, Dylan’s early life laid the groundwork for his empathetic connection with the underdog, a pervasive theme in his music. The strategic name change to Dylan, likely for a more marketable and less ethnically identifiable stage presence, highlights the challenges faced by Jewish artists in mid-20th century America, setting the stage for a career marked by reinvention. This duality of identity—between his roots and public persona—underscores the tensions between authenticity and the demands of a burgeoning career.
Immersed in the diverse musical landscape facilitated by powerful radio stations and the creative ferment of Greenwich Village’s Bohemian scene, Dylan’s unique sound began to take shape. His artistic trajectory, from initial homage to Woody Guthrie to the development of a distinctive style, demonstrates an unwavering dedication to his craft, prioritizing artistic expression over mainstream expectations. This nonconformist spirit, evident in his transition from folk to electric rock and subsequent explorations into country and western genres, not only pioneered musical shifts but also inspired a generation of artists.
Dylan’s influence extends far beyond the musical realm, with his work recognized for its literary merit, culminating in the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature. By weaving references to literary figures into his songs, he has democratized access to these works, bridging the divide between music and literature. His addressing of social injustices, as seen in his advocacy for Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, solidifies his role as a voice for the marginalized and a champion of free speech, embodying the essence of America’s founding values of nonconformity and expression.
While the pressures of fame, particularly the loss of privacy in Woodstock, have led to periods of reclusiveness, this has paradoxically contributed to the mystique surrounding his figure, cementing his status as a cultural icon. His legacy, therefore, is not merely a body of work but a celebration of the human spirit in all its complexity and beauty, standing as a powerful reminder of the importance of artistic integrity, empathy, and visionary pursuit in an era often marked by division and conformity.

Greenwich Park - London 2018

What to Wear to (Pretty Much) All Occasions
SH is currently on holiday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain 🇪🇸 He was in his IG Live wearing the same Lululemon soft knitted over-shirt that he wore in a photo taken by a French fan in London. The photo was published on Thursday, January 4th. The fan recognised him when she boarded the Uber Boat at the London Eye and saw SH already on board with a female friend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The photo was taken on board passing Bankside, in the background Millennium Bridge (or St Paul Bridge) Tate Modern, and Shakespeare's Globe (not seen) on the left of the photo. SH doesn’t look so thrilled to be recognised. It’s a travel downriver through the City of London & beneath Tower Bridge before travelling past Docklands & onto the Royal Borough of Greenwich. SH gets off at Greenwich Pier his final destination.
Tumblr media
On Saturday, January 6th, Charley McEwen, a hairstylist who exclusively visits Four London Salon on Saturdays, shared a photo of SH during his first visit to the Mayfair-London salon for a haircut in the New Year. The photo indicates the same salon as mentioned earlier, with a wooden panel on a white wall visible in the background. SH was seen wearing a Lululemon shirt that he had worn on previous days. As SH has had a hair transplant, it is always beneficial to have his hair taken care of by a male stylist.
Tumblr media
#fourlondon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SH seems to be travelling to Las Palmas Gran Canaria with hand luggage (travel rucksack?), so he is carrying some clothes and will wear the same clothes twice in a row or possibly for the whole weekend. Who knows? He might buy an extra shirt in Las Palmas or wherever he's going.
Tumblr media
He was wearing a double leather bracelet with a sliding knot clasp and no rings. He might have thought he could deceive by wearing a long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up, informing it was cold and rainy in Scotland. However, the sunlight in the room made it evident that he wasn't at home when his watch reflected a blue sky and a beautiful sunny day outside which he tried to hide quickly.
Tumblr media
He had prepared his behind-the-scenes make-up and added a hint of glamour which magically erased the frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead furrows, Visibly botox in the eyes, facial whitening and full face collagen bio-stimulators making his look ready for the beach 😎 ☀️
So, not everyone cares what he does or doesn't do (luckily) but he believes that his fans do care. To mislead them, he wears the same outfit frequently, possibly because he thinks he is important or because he's eco-friendly. He wears a flannel shirt that blocks odour-causing bacteria from the body. I just hope he doesn't do the same thing with his underwear, If they are not washed 😳 or he prefers going commando, with shorts on the Canary Islands Spain 🇪🇸 off the coast of North Africa which has an average maximum of 21 °C in January.
Tumblr media
But everything suggests He's mixing pleasure with business. There is a possibility that he might try to claim his expenses for the trip to Gran Canaria as a business expense through his company MPC. This is because he did an Instagram Live for less than 20 minutes during his holidays. However, expenses should always be reasonable and it appears that he has a hard life 🙄 or as always, he is living his life to the fullest! …..Livin' La Vida Loca!

Greenwich, London
I find it fitting that my last trip of the year was to the Prime Meridian at the Royal Observatory Greenwich. It's a nice end to a year of travel. We also visited the Cutty Sark, Greenwich Pier, took a boat on the Thames to Embankment, where the London Eye is, and Covent Garden for their annual Christmas display.

Sylvia Rivera
Tumblr media
Sylvia Rivera is one of the most well know revolutionaries from the stonewall period of gay history. Her and Marsha P. Johnson, another queen or trans woman, though the terms have historically not been very separate, founded STAR, the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries.
Though the sources that I last cited says that she led the charge on stonewall, the information on this is muddy and she may have not even been at the riots at all. Her account says that she was at the riots, but another oral account places her as passed out in a park uptown.
Regardless of that, she was still one of the most well known activists in New York. After the death of Marsha P. Johnson, which was ruled a suicide, she took to living on one of the piers near Greenwich village. Sylvia Rivera fought for the rights of poor queer people, primarily those who were at risk of other discrimination. She disliked the assimilationist gay movement, and she herself focused on the people she felt were being left behind by the wider LGBT movement.

ok i forgot i drafted this a few days ago LMAO so here i'm just answering every single dps question in the ask game bc i want to.
1. Who's your favorite character?
Hmmmm...................................................................................... Dunno about this one folks............ (it's Nuwanda btw)
2. Who's your favorite character who is not one of the poets?
Okay wait this is kinda hard LMAOOOO cuz most of the characters outside the DPS/Keating either suck or have nothing going on at all........................ Honestly Gloria. Underrated and over-hated character she literally did nothing wrong and also that should have been me. I know she got her pussy eaten. Also I love Melora Walters.
3. Which character do you think had the best name?
LMAO wait this is a really funny question. Knox Overstreet honestly has the most fitting name though. Like. Yeah that would be the name of someone who wears a sweater tied around their neck huh.
4. What's your favorite poem in the movie?
Poetrusic by Charles Dalton :)
5. Do you like any ships? If so, which ones?
Meeks/Pitts! Obviously I do like Anderperry too. I don't tend to read a lot of fic to be quite honest because it's hard to find ones that I want to read. But the best couple is me/Charlie
6. What's your favorite headcanon?
This is hard because I'm not really sure. My favorite headcanons are all my own tbh................. The headcanon that Charlie and I moved into a studio apartment together in Greenwich Village in April 1961. :)
7. What's your most unpopular opinion?
Knox isn't a sexual assaulter and you should be allowed to have a nuanced take on him without being attacked. And I don't even like Knox that much. And while I'm here I'm going to play super dirty and say that I have personal experience with assault and what he did is literally fucking nothing. Chris did NOT care and Chet is physically violent and Knox is just an idiot. Chris didn't want Chet to hurt him! My other unpopular opinion is that I am allowed to have a nuanced take on Cameron and also still dislike him overall. I don't get why the fandom loves Cameron now and hates Knox. One is a fucking cop and the other is just a bumbling idiot. That being said I understand him as a character obviously and I understand the context and etc etc but also........ Don't care. Doesn't excuse his actions.
8. What's your favorite scene?
The third cave scene where Charlie brings Gloria and Tina to the cave, changes his name to Nuwanda and announces that he published the article in the school paper. Iconic groundbreaking legendary he ate that up gagged them served etc etc.
9. What's your favorite deleted scene?
The one where Todd helps Neil rehearse his lines outside in the snow near the pier. I don't think any of the deleted scenes needed to be included in the movie at all except for that one. That's the only thing I would add.
10. Do you have any songs you associate with the movie, or any specific characters?
Lol............. Vienna is about Charlie to me forever now. :(
11. If you had to assign the cast a flower, which flowers would go to who?
This is extremely random I'm skipping it cuz I honestly don't really care lol. I don't know enough about flowers.
12. What's something you wish they'd done in the movie?
Added in a sex scene betweI'm joking. This is a joke. I don't think they needed to add anything tbh. The only thing I would say I wish stayed in is that pier scene from earlier but the movie still works without it just fine.
13. What's something you wished they hadn't?
Honestly I'm thinking really hard about this and I can't think of anything. I'm dead serious I don't really think there's anything I dislike or think should have been left out. I guess in retrospect I wish they had changed the Knox party scene ONLY because of how insane it makes literally every other person in the fandom and how insane the discourse makes me feel. But I personally don't think anything should have been left out/changed. And I'm correct. ☺️
14. Do you like any poems not featured in the movie? Any you wished they'd read?
This is a funny question like are you asking me if I like ANY poems at all???? It'd be funny to be like, "yeah I hate poetry except for the ones they read in Dead Poets Society"
15. What do you think of the book?
Okay I feel very passionately about this. I HATE the fact that the book is so prominent in the fandom. SOOOOO MANY MOVIES GET NOVELIZATIONS. It is a MARKETING thing. It was SO common for movies to get a novelization tie-in based off of a script. It is basically film merchandise like a fucking t-shirt or something. The novelization is based off of an earlier draft of the script and includes a shit ton of stuff that was changed and taken out. Never in my life have I seen any fandom take this to heart and yet the DPS fandom can't get over the shit in the book. They treat the book as "canon" despite the fact that it's a bunch of shit that ISN'T IN THE MOVIE AND SOMETIMES CONTRADICTS THE MOVIE!!!!!!!! This fucking baffles me and I will fight you about it. It pisses me off like genuinely. It doesn't make any sense and I think the entire fandom needs to stop calling the book "canon" because there's so much shit in the book that directly contradicts the events of the film. Like what even is "canon" at this point. Enough with the fucking book bullshit!!!!!!!

London pt. 7 - St. James's Park & a boat tour
I knew that you can see Buckingham Palace from St. James's Park, but I hadn't planned to go and have a look. For all my interest in history, I couldn't care less for contemporary monarchy. But I did end up passing it by on my way to the park.

St. James's Park was wonderful. It was still pretty quiet there at that time of day, not too many people around. On the other side of the water there was live music playing every now and again. Maybe a rehearsal? Nothing else really makes sense on a Thursday morning & with all the longer breaks in between. Anyway, they played the Flying Theme from How To Train Your Dragon, so that was a very nice surprise. 😊

Walking past the pelicans was a little intimidating, though not as much as the swans in Hyde Park imo. 😅
A bit later that day I went on one of those river sightseeing tours. I did a round-trip from Westminster Pier to Greenwich and back. While I did get off the boat in Greenwich, I didn't really do anything there. Just walked around the Cutty Sark once & had some lunch tbh, then took the next boat back. Still was one of the indisputable highlights of my trip, because there was a school class just waiting to go when we disembarked, and there was a girl, can't have been older than maybe 8 or 9, who cheerily greeted us with a "Welcome to Greenwich!" So cute.

The steps to the right are the ones Christopher Wren used to get a boat to the building site of St. Paul's Cathedral.

The Shard, the HMS Belfast (actual warship from WW2 turned museum), and the Tower (That was the closest I got to it tbh. Next time.)

Tower Bridge

The Cutty Sark, the last big tea clipper, today a museum

The view of Canary Wharf from Greenwich Pier. Tbh I solely associate Canary Wharf with the season 2 finale of Doctor Who lol.

East Greenwich Gas Works engine shed - Mar 1951 by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old amateur photograph of a 'shed bash' to the East Greenwich Gas Works engine/loco shed in Mar 1951. The gas works had an extensive internal steam/diesel rail network, bringing in coal via a 'coaling pier' on the river, sending out coke and chemicals, as well as many internal rail movements. The network consisted of two narrow gauge and one standard gauge railway, from 1900 it was joined via a spur to the Angerstein railway. On the reverse is annotated "East Greenwich Gas Works loco shed 31/3/51". Old/new overhead maps view:- maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=14.6&lat=5... A history of the gas works is here:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Greenwich_Gas_Works If there are any errors in the above description please let me know. Thanks. 📷 Any photograph I post on Flickr is an original in my possession, nothing is ever copied/downloaded from another location. 📷 -------------------------------------------------
