I have fallen in love with Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (specifically Phryne and Jack) and I love seeing a picture of a country and a time that is very unfamiliar to this American--it is truly a study in sociology and anthropology. For instance, I had no clue communism and socialism were so popular in Australia after the First World War.
But of course, the writer in me is drawn first and foremost to the dialogue. Sparkling and dynamic--a success attributed to the writers and the actors delivering the lines--it is a true tour de force! I'm sad I hadn't heard about this show earlier.
To celebrate such delicious dialogue and striking ripostes, I've created a top ten list of my favorites!
But my number one favorite riposte from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries? "If a tree falls in the forest...." "You are very likely somewhere close by wielding the axe!" 😂 Its delivery is so delicious, but the words in the exchange are what truly delight my writer soul.
Why? It links back to a presentation by Karen Witemeyer to my ACFW chapter on writing deep point of view. She encouraged us to circumvent clichés by personalizing them for the character rather than writing them as they're known. EX: "It was hot enough to melt butter." became for my latest character (an Army CID officer) something like "... to melt an MRE in a Humvee on the streets of Basra".
This tweaking of the forest-falling tree adage follows exactly that directive. Twisting the old saying into something new, snappy, and completely reflecting each character's personality (both the speaker's and the hearer's).
Bravo to the writers for the masterclass example! And yes, I geek out on writing craft. 😂🤓

When I was in Grade 6, I discovered Wattpad—a platform where people who love writing come together to share their stories. It was here that I encountered the works of Binibining Mia (I Love You Since 1892) and April Avery (Titan Academy of Special Abilities).
I vividly remember covering my mouth in excitement and kilig over their stories, even over the clichés and cheesy lines. At the same time, I cried my heart out whenever a beloved character had to die to advance the plot. It hurt so much, but I knew those moments weren’t mine to change—they were part of the authors' creation.
Over the years, I became deeply invested in their stories, which became my escape from the chaos of real life. I even used my first salary to buy books from National Bookstore to expand my collection. All in all, their works inspired me to believe in endless possibilities which eventually fuel my passion for writing.
For me, being a writer isn’t just about telling stories—it’s about pouring your heart into words and crafting ideas that connect with others. It’s challenging, yet incredibly rewarding. That’s why, if I could be anyone in the world, I would choose to be a great writer who touches readers' hearts and leaves a lasting mark.

David McCullough, Pulitzer Prize—winning biographer of President Harry Truman, researching at the Truman Library, 1990.
#RIP David McCullough
"The great collection of the National Archives is one of the wonders of our country, the richest, most enthralling documentation we have as a nation of who we are, what we have achieved, our adventures, and what we stand for." David McCullough
Historian and author David McCullough believed and demonstrated through his remarkable career that history matters and records matter. He frequently researched, visited and spoke at the National Archives and was our greatest fan.
Asked what he would add to the 2000 National Millennium Time Capsule, McCullough said "A Boston Public Library card":
"I recommend that the time capsule include at least one public library card for a child…a Boston Public Library card would be particularly suitable, as the Boston Public Library was the first to allow readers to take books home. Our free public library system is one of the greatest of all American institutions, and reflects perhaps as well as anything could the theme of past and future. Cross the threshold of a public library and you enter a world of pure democracy, the world of books and learning open to all, free to the people.' What journeys of mind and spirit are there for the taking with a library card." Clinton White House time capsule statement.
McCullough helped launch the 2002 Our Documents initiative highlighting 100 milestone documents in American history— drawn largely from our holdings. He was the recipient of the first-ever National Archives Records of Achievement Award in 2004, given by the Foundation for the National Archives.

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." With those words, J. R. R. Tolkien began his epic story that originally was titled "There and Back Again" Have you ever read any of Tolkein's books? The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings were 2 stories that changed my life. The epicness of the writing and the stories that they contained have captivated me for hours. Tolkien was a master story teller and I will forever be indebted to how his genius has influenced my writing and has encouraged me to never give up on writing. I find it pretty funny how C. S. Lewis modeled the Professor in his epic "The Chronicles of Narnia" after his friend Tolkien. And, Tolkien modeled Treebeard after his friend C. S. Lewis. (That must have been one interesting conversation) . . . Have you been influenced by any great authors? . . . #writerlife #greatwriters #jrrtolkien #thehobbit #greenbooks #greentheme #ilovegreen #darkgreen #bookshelf #inspiration #dontgiveup #inspiringstories #epicstories #epicbooks #classicstories #theclassics https://www.instagram.com/p/Bnl7F0eAEu6/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=p3lyeivdifdn

I finished Boris Pasternak's "I Remember" last night. I'm very glad that I read it and I plan on revisiting it again soon with a pen and paper next to me to take notes. There is lots to learn in this small and unusual gem of a book. I'm still reading James Elkins' "What a Painting Is." It is a book to dip in and out of. "This is not a book about paintings, but about the act of painting, and the kinds of thought that are taken to be embedded in paint itself..." #BorisPasternak #JamesElkins #GreatWriters #artBooks #WhatIAmReading #OnMyShelf https://www.instagram.com/kellytmkilmer/p/CZQNR6ePGgD/?utm_medium=tumblr

I also realized that i rely on the official canon and on the official story because i am creatively inhibited.
I am unable to rewrite the story, make it my own, write my fic or come up with headcanons.
Maybe that is why i remain frustrated and disappointed with sso. Its really hard for me to write, and i struggle with even expressing what problems i have with the story and the characters. All i know is that it doesnt feel right. The story doesnt feel right, the characters dont feel real, and i have no way of making them come alive. The world also doesnt make sense to me, and frustrates me. I dont enjoy chilling in the game.
Maybe thats why i prefer to play RDR2 which has greatwriting, looks realistic and makes sense. Its much easier for me to chill in that game and to feel emotions and connect with the characters.
This seems to be an uncommon opinion but thank god SSO is making (what appears to be) serious headway into the story.
For years it felt like it had stalled out. It was valid wanting main characters and villains to be visually updated before continuing, but it slowed things down.
I'm glad they aren't going "we need to update Mr. Sands, Darko is a pretty old model compared to the Dark Riders, Avalon really needs an update, so does Pi, etc"
Because yes it absolutely would look better if everyone had the same number of polygons. And yes it WOULD be great if SSO picked up those threads mentioned throughout the main story. But if they did that and got all those map areas that had been brought up in the story quests then it'd be another 10 years of filler in the main story until they can 'wrap up'
And honestly I'm tired of waiting. This isn't even an impatience thing, this is a "I've played this game for 10+ years and at this point I don't care how it's wrapped up, as long as it IS wrapped up."
Probably helps that I don't expected a 'satisfying' ending from SSO, I just want AN ending to the main story. I expect Garnok to be 'defeated' and for the Soul Riders to be victorious, probably through the power of friendship. That's all I'm expecting.
