The greater owlcat is the largest member of the owlcat family and one of the largest land predators in Uanlikri and can weight up to one tonne. Greater owlcats used to range the whole continent, but their northern range has been considerably reduced due to persecution by antioles and several northern subspecies have become extinct or nearly so. The situation is entirely different in the South, where it remains a potent and common predator.

Across history, the greater owlcat has been a potent cultural symbol throughout its whole range. It is oftentimes associated with the Moon due to its white facial disk and nocturnal habits which bring into into natural association with the full moon that marks midnight.

The greater owlcat is especially important to the Am-Wiek peoples of the Kantishian Mountains. Their consider the Owlcat a powerful and dangerous lunar spirit. Am-Wiek legends tell the tale of how the First Hunter killed the Owlcat's mate for his pelt, and how the Owlcat, striken with grief and mad with vengeance, hunted the First Hunter through the land until she came to his camp at night, killed him, and skinned him. She's worn his skin ever since in a show of her might and wrath, and because of this all of her children are marked with the black shadow of the First Hunter's skin on their backs.

Katherine 'Kadee' Silvuse von Valancius

I decided to do this since I signed up for the Rogue Trader Heart Exchange and I've not written a lot about Kadee in the WH40k setting. Or rather Owlcat's 40k setting. A lot of her lore is going to be based more on the game and the Expanse (Belters as Void Born, of course!)

Character’s full name: Katherine von Valancius (family name, Silvuse)

Reason or meaning of name: Katherine was named after St. Katherine, who was one of the shield bearers of Alicia Dominica who was the founder of the Adepta Sororitas. Katherine is a common enough name among upper and lower classes in hopes of a child ready against defend against the forces of Chaos.

Character’s nickname: Kadee (a name used by Idira and Jae in nearly all settings, informal settings with Heinrix and Cassia), Kitten (by Marazhai in whatever setting he wishes)

Reason for nickname: Katie is a common diminutive and Katherine has been called Kadee by her family and friends until becoming a Psyker and enrolling as an Officer. Kitten was swiftly granted as a nickname when Marazhai found Kadee's cats, Tiger and Void, and before he could do anything, Kadee swore she'd rip out his uthera, or whatever passes for one.

Physical appearance

Age: Late 20s, early 30s by end of game.

How old does he/she appear: Early to mid 30s due to the stress of her life, though she does use biomancy to keep herself from aging more.

Weight: 5'10/180cm

Height: 175lbs/65kg

Body build: Due to the bulk of psyker gear, Kadee appears stouter than she actually is. When reduced to bare skin, she's thick but muscular, with an hourglass shape.

Shape of face: Something between diamond and heart shaped.

Eye color: Light hazel

Skin tone: Medium warm olive

Distinguishing marks: Metal planting where she cracked her skull as a child along her jaw, framing her face. There are sockets that allow augments to help with her psyker abilities. 

Hair color: Black

Type of hair: Wavy to curly

Hairstyle: Usually in a bun or up do.

Overall attractiveness: Pretty if worn looking,  as void borns tend to be. Due to the tone of her skin, she’s sometimes mistaken for hiveworld or forgeworld born.

Personality Good personality traits: Thoughtful, presenting kindness as a kind of pragmaticism, curious, stubborn, and protective.

Bad personality traits: Vengeful, willful, and she compartmentalizes her anger far too often.

Mood character is most often in: Kadee attempts to be inspiring in public, but is often exhausted and befuddled how she found herself in this position of Rogue Trader. The push back from her kindness often puts her on edge.

Sense of humor: Kadee has a dry sense of humor, and is apt to play the 'straight man' to most people - save Heinrix. He happens to switch on her rare, more playful sense of humor.

Character’s greatest joy in life: The colors of others, finding ways to enrich her subject, floating in a hot bath (and demands it as a part of aftercare), watching nobles suffer, her cats.

Character’s greatest fear: Abandonment.

Why?: Most Psykers develop a stockholm syndrome relationship with the Imperium - between losing her parents and being raised in a Black Ship during her teenhood, being alone is something she dreads as much as she yearns for.

What single event would most throw this character’s life into complete turmoil? Inheriting a massive fortune from a psychotically rich wine aunt she’s never met, and all the baggage that comes with it. Besides that? Being getting into a toxic rivalry that might corrupt her.

But how would that happen? 

Character is most at ease when: Curled with her cats while sipping mulled fruit based 'rotgut' - anyone who thinks all rotgut is the same are all nobles. 

Most ill at ease when: Nobles. Nobility. The entire concept.

Enraged when: Wanton destruction of innocent lives for the greater good - she's a very complicated relationship with warp jumps. Marazhai pushing the boundaries as all good switches should. 

Depressed or sad when: Mistakes are made that hurt others intentionally, people dying for unworthy causes.

Priorities: Betterment for non-Chaos worshipping sentient lives living in her colonies - which is absolute heresy and she is aware of it.

Life philosophy: That freedom and searching for better solutions after millenia of agony is worth the risk.

Character’s soft spot: Cats!

Is this soft spot obvious to others? A handful; Abelard is very aware of the bothersome orange beast who runs rampant on the bridge. Cassia is delighted over meeting an actual cat and she’ll often find Void sitting in her lap when she has tea with the Lord Captain. Irdia likely encourages Tiger much to Abelard’s dismay. Pasqual finds cats bothersome. Ulfar loves Tiger matches his mane and beard while Sister Argenta enjoys petting both cats when they cross her path. Jae sneezes around them and isn’t particularly fond of them. Yrliet is absolutely puzzled by the beasts. Heinrix has developed a begrudging fondness because Kadee loves the cats so much and Marazhai is reminded, DAILY, not to hurt them and has done the calculations such pain would displease Kitten. (Tiger tends to attack Marazhai’s ponytail, Void likes sleeping in Heinrix’s coat.)

Greatest strength: Brilliant and personable in formal settings.

Greatest vulnerability or weakness: Kadee is physically frail and she secretly fights with the warp entity that possessed her in her teenhood in a remarkably mundane way. 

Biggest regret: Never telling her parents and siblings how much she loved them.

Minor regret: Katherine doesn't really try to remember the minor things.

Biggest accomplishment: Saving a Pilgrim ship when she was a teenager.

Minor accomplishment: Buying two cats. (It is a BIG deal to her.) 

Past failures he/she would be embarrassed to have people know about: Her old warp entity and the new one have had fights with each other - one kept her up for 48 hours.

Character’s darkest secret: How often and how much she enjoys hunting nobles with Marazhai.

Does anyone else know? … yes.

Goals Drives and motivations: Survival was her biggest motivation prior to becoming Rogue Trader. She did have daydreams of getting to a place where she can take care of others, but being a Psyker, she knew her options were limited.

Immediate goals: Establish herself in the Expanse and make self and productive colonies. Long term goals: Make her changes as permanent as she can.

Where did she live in childhood?: Poor on a void ship's lower decks, she was from a demolition clan. 

Most important childhood memory: How to handle with fires within the lower decks, where oxygen levels weren't always level.

Why: It was one of the first times Kadee saw crisis and a crisis that would be repeated far too often, even among the lower decks.l

Romance in Video Games

So, we were watching a friend play Veilguard the other day. She'd originally planned on romancing Neve, but was quickly taken by Bellara's autistic elf charm. And this struck us as very interesting; normally in these sorts of games you pick your romance ahead of time, crafting a character that either matches (female elf for Solas) or contrasts (Githyanki Selunite for Shadowheart) the freak of your chosen paramour. But this, the changing of romance halfway through the playthrough, felt really cool and organic, at least from a viewer's perspective. And it got us thinking about video game romance in general, and the discourses surrounding it.

Now, we are side-eyeing the fuck out of a lot of the anti-romance sentiments, given that many of them have popped up right when queer romances are becoming the norm, but there have been a few that, at least in our opinion, hold merit. Many romances do feel very shallow and, for lack of a better term, gamey. A lot of them can feel very unnatural, especially the ones that are hyperspecific and require a guide to actually do (looking at you Owlcat).

So this got us thinking, how would *we* go about implementing romance in a video game, specifically an RPG (which are generally where these conversations pop up, yes I know this isn't applicable to every game). And we came up with a little something we like to call, the "Roll Under Relationship Value System," or LURVE for short (yes I know that's not how acronyms work, bite me).

Essentially, the way it works is that each "Party Member", along with maybe a number of NPCs, have a relationship value with the Player Character. This is a number that has a value somewhere between -100ish to 100, with a starting value somewhere in the negatives (more on that later). This number would increase or decrease depending on the player's actions, like how a lot of games have an approval rating. The difference here is that there wouldn't be any sort of event(s) tied to reaching a certain RV, it's just a number. What would then happen is that at certain points in the gameplay loop, like after every mission or when traveling to a new location, the game would roll a d100 (i.e. generate a number between 1 and 100), and if the number rolled was equal to or under the current relationship value, the character would take an interest in you, and the romance would begin.

This, at least in our opinion, would allow for a more organic feeling romance, and a more realistic one. Sometimes two or more people hit it off immediately, sometimes they take a while getting to know each other first. It would also make the romance feel a little more personal; your experience is almost guaranteed to be different from another player's, even if you wind up with the same partner(s) (again, more on that later), and beyond each party member/NPC's preferences, there wouldn't really be a guide for getting into their pants.

Now for a few additions and caveats. The starting RV could be adjusted by a number of factors, like the player character's origin and NPC personalities (for example, an more flirty and outgoing NPC might have a higher starting RV, while a more reserved one might start lower). Also side note, yes party members should have set sexualities, but only if there's an equal or greater number of same-sex options. Only having one M/M or F/F option is bad game design, we don't need any more heterosexual party members thank you very much.

Good lord the Mephistopheles fight honestly earnestly desperately wants to contend with Profit Taker for worst boss design in a video game award.

Literally ten MINUTES of pre-buffing and battlefield arrangement. Got him down from 1,300 HP to 250.

Misclicked, because the battlefield is under so many visual effects I literally cannot see clearly, and waste a turn, costing me a 20 minute fight that slowed my computer to a crawl.

Cannot reload after the prebuffing because the game remains bugged and he will get infinite turns if you reload in the same map he's loaded into.

So I get to. Do that again. And by "that again" I mean meticulously apply literally 50 buffs to my party and the battlefield so I don't instantly die.

Which isn't challenging or strategic gameplay so much as it's a checklist test and a chore.

You're bad at game design and I'm better at game design than you are.

I have very little to my name to brag about but when I did MDMD I didn't just go "Hmm... I'll give everyone... maximum health. And armor. And damage. And fatigue."

Mephisto standing there spamming sirroco and hellfire ray 5 times a turn isn't interesting. Him having such a high spell level that you need to be level 20 AND focused in abjuration and greater dispel to dispel his buffs isn't interesting. Having to build your characters around this one single boss isn't interesting.

You are bad and should feel bad.

Some of you 40K people might not know Owlcat, who do the Pathfinder RPGs. They’re like 300 hour long RPGs, and are not afraid at all to hide away routes because they understand that content you don’t see will enhance the agency of the player and allow a depth of replayability. Their games are well worth it, and they legitimately still have DLC that are entire expansion packs which can be like 10+ hours instead of garnishes cut out from the main game.  Basically, think like a classic Fallout or Baldur’s Gate, made with modern tools not to make them merely pretty but to enhance the potential of that genre. Their previous game, Wrath of the Righteous, notably had eight entire routes to play through in this gigantic RPG, and an entire second campaign being released in DLCs They have an incredible amount of depth to them, in general, so I’m very excited to see what they do with this setting Notable here, they also tend to do some pretty memorable characters. This person brought up the ladies and like... They have a lot of strong women and gay characters and the like, and present those aspects as part of a greater whole, if that makes sense. For example, Valerie is this Strong Woman Warrior you meet early in Kingmaker... But taken as a whole, she is a staunch atheist who’s rejection of a paladin order and commitment to be a warrior has led her to be straight-laced and serious, and her rejection of her beauty-focused religion has led her to undervalue art and attempt to downplay her physical appearance. So, she is a -strong warrior woman- and that is both cool and appealing, but it builds on that concept a lot, so that she is this character with a lot of depth as a result. Basically, if you are looking for cool characters, it’s usually a safe bet these guys will deliver on the cool characters the art portrays.

These are skins I made for everyone's favourite heroine, I wasn't thrilled with the salmon, almost skin tone. So I made these both as unique items they are clothing variation 2 and 3 she will be wearing the good clothes when you meet up in the hideout on Taris. When you encounter her on the unknown planet she will battle you in the evil clothes. I have increased the ac of both of these. So they are as protective as Jedi master robes.

The greater owlcat is the largest member of the owlcat family and one of the largest land predators in Uanlikri and can weight up to one tonne. Greater owlcats used to range the whole continent, but their northern range has been considerably reduced due to persecution by antioles and several northern subspecies have become extinct or nearly so. The situation is entirely different in the South, where it remains a potent and common predator.

Across history, the greater owlcat has been a potent cultural symbol throughout its whole range. It is oftentimes associated with the Moon due to its white facial disk and nocturnal habits which bring into into natural association with the full moon that marks midnight.

The greater owlcat is especially important to the Am-Wiek peoples of the Kantishian Mountains. Their consider the Owlcat a powerful and dangerous lunar spirit. Am-Wiek legends tell the tale of how the First Hunter killed the Owlcat's mate for his pelt, and how the Owlcat, striken with grief and mad with vengeance, hunted the First Hunter through the land until she came to his camp at night, killed him, and skinned him. She's worn his skin ever since in a show of her might and wrath, and because of this all of her children are marked with the black shadow of the First Hunter's skin on their backs.
