Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964)
"Miriam? He really... isn't here, is he? Just now, I thought I heard... sometimes at night, when I wake up, it seems as if he really is here. Don't turn on the light. It's not real when it's light. It's only real when it's dark - dark and still."
#hush...hush sweet charlotte#hush...hush‚ sweet charlotte#robert aldrich#1964#american cinema#lukas heller#henry farrell#bette davis#olivia de havilland#joseph cotten#agnes moorehead#cecil kellaway#victor buono#mary astor#wesley addy#william campbell#bruce dern#george kennedy#frank ferguson#frank de vol#Aldrich's follow up to Baby Jane reunited him with star Davis (and initially Crawford‚ until she left the project under a cloud; she can#just about be glimpsed in one of the long shots of cousin Miriam arriving at the house by taxi) and even provides a cameo for Baby Jane co#star Buono. the rest of his cast is also notably starry: de Havilland‚ Cotten‚ Moorehead‚ even a genuine cinematic legend like Astor not to#mention a pre fame Dern and Kennedy. sadly all that increased star power doesn't translate to a film even better than its predecessor#this is solid‚ a strong and sweaty gothic grotesquerie‚ but it's a little flabby and nowhere near as sharp or as honed as Baby Jane was#Davis often goes very large and brushes caricature more than once with her faded Southern belle but to give her her dues there are other#moments of true heartbreaking beauty in her performance. de Havilland is also very strong altho maybe tips her hat a little soon in#revealing the true personality lingering beneath the surface of her mysterious outsider. Aldrich is as strong as ever helming a killer#fantasy sequence... tbh the more i think about it the kinder my memory of this becomes. it has just one main flaw and that's that it isn't#Baby Jane. but then what is? Aldrich never quite hit those heights again (tho he did some p great work) and this is a commendable try

one doctor who thing I’ve always thought would be fun is meeting a future doctor in a ‘current series’ - like a preemptive multi doctor special
but this ep reminded me why that’s not a good idea :(
#don’t get me wrong#14 and 15s reactions were great when taken as a character growth moment#for the doctor I mean#but it really undercuts the joy of meeting a new doctor on their own terms#not even the basics of the post regen high or the new tardis or outfit#but just getting to watch them tick you know?#ncuti is already a darling and tennant’s 14 grew on me as his own thing#I had fun!!! lots to like!!!!#but yeah#wish ncuti didn’t have to share his first ep - especially with David Tennant of all people 😅#doctor who#spoilers#ps this is also why I feel like Jo Martin got done so dirty#she oozed charisma and intrigue - but her role in the show was undercut by … well everything else#*sigh*#this is also why capaldis little cameo in the 50th was great!!!!#I saw it in the cinema and we lost our minds!!!!!!#just a little taste of what’s to come - then back in the action#no toes stepped on

Been on a movie binge today. Had a cry-filled nostalgic moment watching Suncoast, laughed a little watching Good Burger 2, finally watched Wonka, and ended up watching Anyone But You and I kinda loved it.
#cinema starview#suncoast#good burger 2#wonka 2023#anyone but you#they put WAAAYYY too much makeup on kel mitchell but seeing him and kenan back together as a duo was so dope#I’m still a little mad at myself for not partaking in IHOP’s Wonka menu for the promotion of the film.#suncoast was a great watch it had me relive a moment of my teen years when my loved one passed away#it was hard navigating that experience but i always cherish those moments the good and the past#i liked timothee chalamet’s campy whimsical take on Wonka… just wasn’t a fan of the musical aspect no shade lol#and at moments wonka dragged out a bit too long#glen powell would make a good gambit or cyclops in the MCU#glen is too fine to not get some MCU movie role

Happy Queer Media Monday!
Today: Cocoon (2020)
Yeah, not really my kind of story, but it sure made some memorable points.
(The last and most memorable picture from the movie, when Nora finds that her pet caterpillar has hatched.)
Summer 2018. Berlin is suffering under a heatwave. 14-year-old Nora’s life is changing, as she navigates everyday relationships, starts menstruating and discovers her sexuality.
A low budget coming of age story set in Berlin, I feel like this movie really captured well what it’s like to be a teenager, when everything in your life seems so big and important. The title is fitting, as, instead of a complete story with a conclusion, this “just” captures a moment of transformation in Nora’s life.
I watched this in summer 2020, when I was in Köln for a weekend. It was a very memorable experience, as 1) small village girl in a big city, and 2) summer 2020, so the whole evening had this beautifully forbidden in-between feel to it. It was a small cinema, so that was nice, too. I cried during the Pride scene. None of this has any significance in regard to the movie itself, but it matters to me, so I’m telling you about it.
You can find a trailer with subtitles here.
Queer Media Monday is an action I started to talk about some important and/or interesting parts of our queer heritage, that people, especially young people who are only just beginning to discover the wealth of stories out there, should be aware of. Please feel free to join in on the fun and make your own posts about things you personally find important!
#it was a great movie watching experience#it was a mild evening and there were people sitting outside at the cafés#the sun went down while we were inside of the cinema#so it wasn't quite dark yet when the movie finished I believe?#but all the lights were coming on and everything#and there were still people sitting outside#so the whole situation had some deliciously forbidden vibe to it#difficult to describe you had to be there#yeah 2020 was a year huh#anyway as to the movie#I feel it actually went well with that situation#as everything in Nora's life seems BIG and IMPORTANT#and it's like everyday things like going to the swimming pool with her sister and her sister's friends#sitting on rooftops#school...#but that really is what being 14 is like isn't it?#like plastic bag in the water is just the perfect symbolism#so beautiful in the moment but from a distance just an ordinary object without any value#like my evening and like Nora's summer#wow I'm getting really deep here#as I said coming of age is not really my thing#but this sure did capture some Truths#movies#queer movies#german cinema#Cocoon#coming of age movies#lesbian movies#Queer Media Monday

I finally watched Vide Noir- pretty cool film! All the dark lighting and overlayed images really add to the surreal quality- it feels like a memory, and it keeps you guessing at what's real. I would love for LH to do more with film in the future (whether it be music videos, special live streams, or otherwise) since it's always such an experience. I'll never ever forget watching POTUWMT live, and it's great to finally see those clips in context. It was a long wait to hear Johnnie swear uncensored, but it was a worthwhile wait indeed.
#lord huron#vide noir#i literally felt like cheering when i heard johnnie say fuckers#also when buck's face was reflected in the cracked mirror. rip to tobey but that was a great moment.#and then the grunts finally smashing bucks car window right before they try to black brain him. cinema.#and and and. the sound of glass breaking when buck gets shot.#and his guitar also getting smashed. not only is his spyche shattering but his connection to lee as well.

The Long Good Friday (1980)
"Alan found him dying. He'd been nailed to the floor."
"When was this, then?"
"Well, it must've been just after you saw him and just before Alan saw him. Otherwise, you'd have noticed, wouldn't you? I mean, a geezer nailed to the floor. A man of your education would definitely have spotted that, wouldn't he?"
#the long good friday#british cinema#1980#john mackenzie#barrie keeffe#bob hoskins#helen mirren#derek thompson#eddie constantine#stephen davies#bryan marshall#p.h. moriarty#paul freeman#dave king#patti love#pierce brosnan#brian hall#paul barber#francis monkman#I'm late to this party but hell‚ this one deserves its reputation. an incendiary‚ even prophetic film; a perfectly timed capturing of that#moment everything in the uk shifted as Thatcher took power‚ capitalism became truly king‚ and with it came the dawn of the yuppie mindset#the legitimisation of the London underworld‚ gentrification and a new age of international aspirations: the US‚ Europe‚ and the New Britain#desperately shedding its dusty‚ working man's image to appear (like Hoskins here) to be civilised and refined and (crucially) a going#concern in economic turns. but underneath it all there's still the razors and the bigotry and corruption. all time Hoskins performance here#giving it everything and absolutely killing it (the final scenes among the best of his impressive career). but there's everyone else‚ too;#every single role seems tonbe a familiar face‚ right down to mute background roles. Keeffe's script is sharp and funny but it's also#unashamedly complex; the plot is labyrinthine‚ underneath the simple conceit‚ and never feels the need to spoonfeed what's happening and#why. topped off with a great moody synth score that's sparingly but effectively used. happy to say this one lives up to the hype#and Derek Thompson‚ as he so often was‚ is brilliant. between this and his tv work from the era (Harry's Game and The Price especially) he#really had the makings of a true star (but if he was happy in Casualty all those years‚ so be it)

so. who are we thinking for 4th anni commission.
(joke answer is giga again) (ACTUALLY A JOKE THIS TIME SEGA. SEGA LISTEN TO ME. PLEASE.)
#it tends to be a big producer doing them and from deco/jin we can possibly assume a recomm?#so my first thought is like. pinocchiop. but that may be because i like pinocchiop#OR ayase. idk if that's possible considering cinema was a collab thing but#ayase anni comm. it would slap. i know it would#it's also very interesting to me that. the last few years the 2dmvs have shown moments from each character's focus events#and nene. has not had one. so what on earth are they doing with her. the movie event??#idk. much about the popularity of producers i'm just going off of who was very early on and who makes sense from there#(it probably won't be giga anyway since he's reserved for vbs. and the reason he got kohane5 was because it was The Big Event)#(so having the producer for their untitled song do it made sense. and it was a great idea ily ultra c)#idk what this tangent is. i just want to hear other people's predictions#bagel's rambles

Operation Crossroads
I ended up on this page only because I learned the name of the most famous film of a nuclear explosion, the clip featured in not one but two Godzilla movies (the most recent did some sfx magic to it), only to learn that Baker, the famous one, is described in Godzilla Minus One with intense accuracy, right down to how to align your ships and what happens if you don't.
Baker was, undoubtedly, the ideal incubator, vastly more destructive than Alpha because a monster lurked in the atoll, the world's first "nuclear accident", born entirely of hubris, a deadly pissing contest to save the navy's face.
Crossroads Charlie was cancelled.
#bikini atoll#crossroads baker#godzilla#godzilla minus one#cinema#nuclear war#Godzilla WAS baker#Baker was Godzilla#great holy fuck moments in history
