So it turns out there's a big craft guild organization thing only a few hours from where I live (I saw an ad for their craft fair), and I got like half my holiday shopping done on their website, and the box arrived today! The thing I was most excited to see in person is fragile, though, and it's really well wrapped in bubble wrap and I don't want it to break when I mail it to the friend it's for, so I am not unwrapping it, but oh man the temptation is there lol I also got myself a little metal bug made of a bottle cap and some wire. It lives on my little corkboard where I put postcards and thank you cards now

As a frequent "ugh, fanon," person it's not that I don't like non-canonical character designs or interpretations as a concept. I love unique and creative ideas about fictional characters that are informed by canon but diverge from it in interesting ways that build upon the original vision! I almost never see this in fanon.

I think what consistently frustrates me regarding anti-vegan rhetoric is the persecution complex–the notion that vegans are primarily interested in putting you down and making themselves feel self-righteous. Because veganism isn't about making you feel bad or putting the blame of mass animal consumption on people who cannot adopt a full plant-based lifestyle due to unfortunate life circumstances. In fact, it's not at all about you (or me!) individually. It's about how other living beings are being systematically abused and how much damage such systems are doing to our planet and everything that lives here–including humans!

And I understand the position of being against veganism because humans are also animals of this world subsisting on other animals and partaking in the cycle of life and death as all other animals do. But the thing is, that's not the case for modern humanity, nor would it excuse the harm it brings as a whole.

For example, people like milk and beef, so companies streamline the process of milking, feeding, forcefully inseminating (aka raping. Look it up if you think I'm exaggerating), and killing cows at a fraction of their lifespan to harvest milk and beef. Now companies need land and food to maintain and expand their cow populations. To make way for more farmland to house cows and grow their food, diverse ecosystems are burned or otherwise destroyed. In destroying the natural ecosystem, CO2 is released into the atmosphere, climate change continues to spiral, entire species are endangered, and we all suffer long-term. Additionally, the artificially bloated population of cows adds a ton of methane into the atmosphere. But now there are more cows for more milk and beef, which people like. So companies continue to streamline and expand, and the spiral continues.

Ultimately, there is no other species on the planet that has conquered, exploited, and industrialized as humans have. Yes, we are living beings who deserve to live as much as any other animal. But that doesn't make industrialized farming morally just or environmentally sustainable. And while some people may not have any choice, I would argue that a significant number of people do!

The cool thing is, you, personally, have the power to affect some positive change in the world. I'm not interested in shaming individual people who purchase animal products, be it wool, eggs, meat, honey, whatever. I'm interested in raising awareness of an extremely harmful system in the hopes that people will use their own power and–even if it's just by a little bit–reduce their participation in that system. The truth is, if environmentalism, climate change, species extinction, animal rights, or capitalist greed are topics that concern you, and if you look into it beyond bad-faith interpretations and easily disproved misconceptions, you might find that veganism aligns with your beliefs far more than you previously thought.

god this is so stupid but here's a really dumb story about my mom and flamingos

so my mom likes weird stuff, it's always been her thing. growing up we had a "shelf of weird finds." anyway - so like a year ago she got herself a pair of Crocs with flamingos on them bc they were goofy. like a week later one of the stores nearby had a flamingo patterned purse so she was like fuck it sure why not

well i am nothing if not committed to the bit so for every single gift for the past year and a half i've gotten my mom something flamingo related. mothers day she got a flamingo Warmees stuffy, her birthday i got her cups with flamingos on them, i bought her a giant TY beanie baby flamingo just because i saw it in the store, the liquor store had a flamingo shaped cup with a straw so i got it for her, etc. etc.

it got to the point where my shopping history was suggesting flamingo products to me and one day i got a suggestion for a bag of 100 tiny silicone lawn flamingos and i knew what i had to do.

i completely forgot i had this bag of 100 tiny flamingos until tonight while my mom was at work. my husband and i then set across the house and hid so many flamingos across the house. they're in the fridge, the cabinets, on the fish tanks, the entertainment center, plant pots, the butter dish, etc. you cannot escape these flamingos (i did not put out all 100 bc i had shit to do with my day)

my mom just got off work and called me fucking CACKLING because she keeps finding flamingos everywhere. my 52 year old mom is now wandering around the house trying to find them all like it's Easter and she keeps calling me when she finds them in weird places and it's such a delight for both of us.

i'm never going to stop buying my mom flamingo shit, this is so funny. they aren't even her favorite animal, not even close.

first you have to pretend like you are the hottest person in the room. it doesn’t matter that you don’t believe it. just tell yourself “i’m the hottest person in this room right now” until you can look yourself in the eyes and say it to your face. start wearing clothes you’ve always wanted to wear. even if you think you “can’t pull it off.” i assure you, you absolutely can. look at yourself in the mirror. tell yourself you’re the hottest person in the room. keep saying it until you believe it. you have to feed your ego. even if it feels weird or stuck-up. you Have to feed your ego. compliment yourself. praise your own art/writing/whatever.

DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS. COMPARISON IS THE EGO KILLER. YOU HAVE TO STRIVE INSTEAD. strive to be as good as your favourite artist. your favourite author. your favourite poet. your favourite youtuber. whoever it is you look up to, don’t compare yourself to them. strive.

acknowledge and accept your failures!!! you will never be as perfect as you want! it is part of being human! you can see where your faults are, but you cannot linger on them. you have to see it and try your best to overcome it. an obstacle will only move when you push it. it’s gonna fucking suck, and you’re gonna want to put it off forever, but you have to do it.

put in the work to better yourself. you can bitch and moan the whole time, that’s perfectly okay, but you have to do it. you will feel like nothing has changed. you will feel like a stuck-up try-hard. but when you look back after months and even years you will see how far you’ve come and you will know that your past self will be so excited to be just like you.

become someone your younger self would want to be when they grow up. make yourself proud.
