Gravesend Chronicles #7: This Is Not Cookie in Gravesend
I grew up in Gravesend Brooklyn in the sixties and seventies. It was — and remains — a very blue collar/working and middle class neighborhood. It has always attracted immigrants because it has relatively good housing stock and has plenty of public transportation options — good for poor and middle class immigrants who couldn’t afford a car. Prior to my family’s arrival there, it had been a mostly post- war, European expat community: lots of Italians, eastern European jews, and a mix Irish and some latinos. Today it’s switched over to mostly Chinese, Orthodox Jews, and expats from a variety of former Soviet satellite states. There are still a few remnants of the old Italian ‘hood, but most have long ago moved away to the burbs.
Recently, I’ve been spending some time there again to deal with my elderly and infirm mother. I take some walks around the old blocks I used to hang out on throughout the 1970s. I walked this one block where I spent a lot of time with friends and family. It was a real memory lane sort of situation for me. As I passed this one section of the block we lived on from about 1968 to 1975, a story from the early seventies came back to me. There was this woman who was known as “Cookie” — that was her nickname and everyone on the block called her that. She was probably in her mid-to-late thirties at the time, maybe 1973 or ’74, thereabout. I was 15 at the time.
Cookie was what one might call a “frowsy, slutty, housewife”. She was not particularly appealing, in fact she was cheap looking, slovenly, loud, overweight, and was more often than not wearing some ratty old housedress. Additionally, she was not very nice, and would often trash talk. As I recall she was married, but no one ever, or rarely saw her husband. On the rare occasions that she actually came down and went somewhere, she would dress somewhat provocatively, lots of make up, jewelry, high heels, plunging neckline tops, etc. She had a thing about talking to various people from her second floor apartment, mostly local gossip, and people could hear her half a block away. She liked to hang out of her window holding a martini glass or some other cocktail and yelling for someone to come get money from her for her cigarettes. She smoked a lot.
Here is where I eventually got involved. About once or twice a week, she would look out of the window and yell down to some teenager walking by if he (always a he) would go to the supermarket to get her 2 cartons of cigarettes. I don’t remember what her brand was, but likely Marlboro as that was the smoke of choice among the “serious” smokers in the ‘hood. One day it was my turn. She stopped me as I walked past her house and yelled at me from her window “hey you”! At this stage she didn’t know me by name, but she clearly had seen me around with some of the other boys on the block. I was a confused kid during
these years, not sure of what I wanted or where I was headed, and there were some risky moments I had to get past — your basic teenager. Anyway, Cookie calls me up to her apartment asking me to go fetch her some smokes. I complied with her orders because I understood what would happen: she would send me off to fetch her cigs, and upon returning with the cartons she would reward me handsomely for my effort with some cash. She had done this many times with many boys on the block, some of my friends in fact got in on this action for a while; it wasn’t hard work, wasn’t a long-winded ordeal, and there’d be some fresh bills in pocket to spend on records over at Korvettes or Titus Oaks Records, or maybe at the pizzeria. Sometimes she would tip as much as the cost of a carton of cigarettes — for a teen without a job, this was definitely a good deal.
Now, in the back of my mind there was another form of payment that I was wondering about: It wasn’t money, and some of the other boys talked about this in ways that only a teenage boy could conjure: crude, blunt, inexperienced, immature. I wondered about this and what and how it would happen, or IF it would happen. I did the cigarette run for her a few times, each time she gave me a little more money. Once she even stroked my face with a smile and said something, but I don’t recall what it was. Then suddenly it all stopped. I never found out about that thing and never got cartons of smokes for her again. Maybe I just wasn’t on the street at the right times. Maybe I wasn’t the right “type” for her, or she just didn’t like me enough in that way —who knows? And of course, my memory of it all is distorted and skewed from time and my own embellishments — memory has a way of doing that.
A year or so later she moved away and that was that. My “Summer of ’42” (it’s a movie, look it up) never happen. Just as well, it might not have been the great thing I had built up in my mind anyway. The real thing would come a couple of years later in high school with someone my own age. Now that is quite memorable, but a story for another day.

Milestone: My WIPs
I originally made mockups of these moodboards for an event on twitter, but I thought I’d share these here too. It’s been a smidgen more than a year since I started really writing again, and finally posting my fic online, so I wanted to honor that in a small way with something about the original fic I’ve been working on since then.
So! They’re small, bombastic, and probably deeply cheesy, but they’re mine, and here they are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gravesend Lane (Tentative Title; #/QueerSlasherRomanceWIP on my Twitter for progress tracking):
Blair, an early career folklorist, moves to the small town of Greymoon, Louisiana, with two urgent objectives:
Prove the existence of a deadly family curse they believe originated in the town, and figure out if they’re still the next in line due to their weird relationship with their gender.
Lay low until the “incident” that forced them to take a semester’s absence their grad program stops trending on all the true crime/unsolved mysteries sites
What they don’t count on is meeting Maxi Morvant: the lone town mortician with an infinite supply of death puns and a friendly smile that seems completely at odds with the way the residents avoid him like the Grim Reaper incarnate. What begins with him assisting them in their research blooms into something more, and the two find in one another the companionship both never thought they’d find in this lifetime. But while Blair’s facing the possible ramifications of their curse, Maxi’s got his own skeletons in the closet - and even worse in the basement of the mortuary his family’s run for generations. When this legacy comes to collect, the two will have to face their demons together, and discover how deep this darkness is intertwined in Greymoon’s roots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the Dead Teach the Living (Tentative Title; #/ScholarSpyRomanceWIP on Twitter):
Nat, a would-be/former historian and archivist, was already starting to regret spending their youth studying a birth country they’d never known. But that was before it became the epicenter of a necrotic plague that quickly brought the world as they knew it to its knees. In the middle of their struggle for survival against “The Ravaged,” they encounter Osric -- a ruined nobleman hiding amongst the living dead. Desperate to enact revenge on the world that their homeland behind, he offers Nat a trade: aid him in his plot with their expertise, turn a blind eye to the involved bloodshed, and they could spend the end of the world in relative safety and comfort. With no family, missing friends, and a life’s work now rendered meaningless, Nat accepts. Why wouldn’t they?
But as the bodies - dead and undead - begin to pile up around them, and the constant threat of capture or infection looms large in the shadows, Nat and Osric will both realize they have more to lose than they might have thought.

FtDTtL is one I’m hoping to have ready to begin the self-publishing process sometime next Fall! GL (or The Mortuary, as I’m sure I’m going to keep calling it by accident) is something that needs a touch more work, so that one I’m aiming to have ready for October’s PitDark (...which is also technically Fall, but you know what I mean).
But in the meantime! Today’s a small anniversary for me, and I wanted to celebrate it by admiring just how far I’ve come on the work I’ve done so far. There’s a lot left, sure, but between passing my exams this semester and getting these two as far as I have, I felt the need to take a minute and celebrate a little. <3 Thanks to everyone who’s been kind and become a friend between last May and now; I’ve appreciated getting to know you, and I look forward to sharing more with you as we get closer to Spooky Season!

You probably have heard by now that DC has killed DC Zoom, DC Ink and Vertigo imprints to consolidate publishing and replace imprints with separate age categories - DC Young Adult and DC Middle Grade being apparently just name changes for Ink and Zoom respectively, with Black Label remaining as their adult-oriented line and DC Universe being the main line still.
Some of things it means:
NO BOOK IS BEING CANCELLED
All Sandman Universe titles will continue under DC Black Label line. The Dreaming, House of Whispers, Books of Magic and Lucifer will keep going, just not under Vertigo label.
Creator-owned titles will be assigned to specific age groups but will also continue.
DC ink and Zoom books that have already been solicited will be published, other titles have been restructured to specific age group.
DC Middle Grade will still publishBatman: Overdrive, Batman Tales: Once Upon a Crime, Diana: Princess of the Amazins and Green Lantern: Legacy in 2020 and will publish Superman Smashes the Klan in future
In fact, they have announced more titles for Middle-Grade books, including:
Anti/Hero – Written by Kate Karyus Quinn and Demitria Lunetta and illustrated by Maca Gil (April 2020)
Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld – Written by Shannon and Dean Hale
ArkhaManiacs – Written by Art Baltazar and Franco and illustrated by Art Baltazar (April 2020)
Batman and Robin…and Howard – Written and illustrated by Jeffrey Brown
DC Super Hero Girls: Powerless – Written by Amy Wolfram and illustrated by Agnes Garbowska (March 2020)
Green Arrow: Stranded – Written by Brendan Deneen and illustrated by Caleb Hosalla
Indestructibles Book 1—Written by Ridley Pearson
Lois Lane – Written by Grace Ellis and illustrated by Brittney Williams
Metropolis Grove – Written and illustrated by Drew Brockington
The Mystery of the Meanest Teacher: A Johnny Constantine Graphic Novel – Written by Ryan North and illustrated by Derek Charm
My Video Game Ate My Homework – Written and illustrated by Dustin Hansen (May 2020)
Primer – Written by Thomas Krajewski and Jennifer Muro and illustrated by Gretel Lusky
Super Sons Book 3: Escape to Landis – Written by Ridley Pearson and illustrated by Ile Gonzalez
Teen Titans Go! to Camp – Written by Sholly Fisch
Teen Titans Go! Roll with It – Written by Heather Nuhfer and P.C. Morrissey     -Zatanna & the House of Secrets – Written by Matthew Cody and illustrated by Yoshi Yoshitani (February 2020)
Future DC Young Adult titles include books announced for 2020 - Gotham High, The Oracle Code, Shadow of the Batgirl, Lost Carnival: a Dick Grayson Graphic Novel and Wonder Woman: Warbringer - as well as already announced Teen Titans: Beast Boy and Wonder Woman: Tempest Tossed.
There is also a large number of NEW books in Young Adult line, including:
Catwoman: Soulstealer – Adapted by Louise Simonson from Sarah J. Maas’ DC Icon prose novel and illustrated by Samantha Dodge
Galaxy: The Prettiest Star – Written by Jadzia Axelrod and illustrated by Cait Zellers
Galaxy: The Prettiest Star – Written by Jadzia Axelrod and illustrated by Cait Zellers
House of El Book 1 – Written by Claudia Gray and illustrated by Eric Zawadzki
I Am Not Starfire—Written by Mariko Tamaki
Mister Miracle – Written by Varian Johnson
Nubia – Written by L.L. McKinney and illustrated by Robyn Smith
Swamp Thing – Written by Maggie Stiefvater and illustrated by Morgan Beem
Victor & Nora: A Mr. Freeze Story – Written by Lauren Myracle and illustrated by Isaac Goodhart
Whistle – Written by E. Lockhart and illustrated by Manuel Preitano
You Brought Me the Ocean – Written by Alex Sanchez and illustrated by Julie Maroh
Zatanna: The Jewel of Gravesend – Written by Alys Arden and illustrated by Jacquelin De Leon
Now, another matter entirely is what it means for Vertigo books. Black Label is a good initiative even if so far it has produced BatPenis and Republican Superman. However, the line was advertised as “ biggest creators and biggest characters” for adult-oriented stories. This is not what Vertigo was. Vertigo was always a publisher who was not afraid of taking risks and pushing the envelope, it changed comics in ways we still feel and changed them for the better. Books like Sandman, Hellblazer, Lucifer, Transmetropolitan, Fables, Shade the Changing Man are among the greatest titles of American comics and left a huge mark on the millions of fans and creators. Black Label is right now criticized for being too Batman-centric for its own good.
It is an end of an era but not one we didn’t see coming. The writing was on the wall since DC fired Karen Beger and took classic Vertigo characters like John Constantine and Swamp Thing and forced them back into the main DC line as a part of New 52. Vertigo never recovered from that hit. Ironically I suspect now Young Animal books will fall under Black Label. Including Doom Patrol, one of titles DC took away from Vertigo in the first place.

Blessed Robert Nutter OP (c 1557-1600) Martyr – Dominican Religious Priest – Born in c 1557 at Burnley Lanes, Lancashire, England, and was martyred by being hanged on 26 July 1600 at Lancaster, England. Throughout the religious upheavals following the English Reformation the vast majority of English Catholics, many of whom lived in Lancashire, remained staunchly loyal to the throne. Nutter was born at Burnley, Lancashire. He entered Brasenose College, Oxford in 1564 or 1565 and, with his brother John Nutter, also a Catholic martyr, became a student of the English College, Reims. He was ordained at Soissons, on 21 December 1581 along with Venerable William Dean and George Haydock. Returning to England, he was committed to the Tower of London, along with his brother, also a priest, on 2 February 1584. He remained in the pit forty-seven days, wearing irons for forty-three days, and twice was subjected to the tortures of “the scavenger’s daughter”. On 10 November 1584, he was again consigned to the pit. Robert witnessed his older brother’s execution before being released. The authorities hoped that he might inadvertently lead them to Catholic safe houses. He was again arrested and transported to France on 21 January 1585, with twenty other priests and one layman, aboard the Mary Martin of Colchester, from Tower Wharf. Landing at Boulogne, on 2 February, he revisited Rome in July but, returned then to England as an escort to newly ordained priests. When the party was brought ashore at Gravesend, Nutter gave his name as Rowley but was recognized and on 30 November 1585 again committed to prison in London, this time to Newgate Prison. There, in 1597, he signed a petition to Father Henry Garnet in favor of having a Jesuit superior but, on 8 November 1598, he and his fellow martyr, Edward Thwing, with others, besought the Pope to institute an archpriest. On 10 March 1600, the keeper having left the gate unlocked, Nutter and his companions made their escape. Some were never recaptured but those who headed south were taken and Nutter was sent to Lancaster, where he was executed on 26 July 1600. Robert Nutter was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1987. https://www.instagram.com/p/CgecaaNLX9W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Eyes On The Street: Great B82 SBS Service Hurt by Cars, Golden, Felder
Southern Brooklyn politicians who favor private parking to public transit have succeeded — they’ve made the B82 SBS run far worse for tens of thousands of constituents.
The MTA and city Department of Transportation launched the limited-stop select bus route earlier this month, and it has resulted in shorter bus trips for riders — but those trips could have been even shorter had State Sen. Marty Golden, State Sen. Simcha Felder, Council Member Chaim Deutsch and others not intervened to deprive the route of more dedicated bus lanes.
As a result, the bus is constantly delayed by double- and illegally-parked cars and trucks along the commercial strip in the heart of its route: Kings Highway between Avenue P and Ocean Parkway.
But Felder — hailed as a hero in the pro-parking Jewish press — only sees the buses causing all the problems. In an Oct. 11 letter to New York City Transit President Andy Byford, he claimed his office has “been inundated with complaints about unmanageable gridlock” along the segment of the route near Nostrand Avenue (for the record, Streetsblog didn’t witness any “gridlock” during several round-trips this month on the B82 SBS. Reminder: Gridlock is entirely caused by drivers who enter intersections before there is room for them to get through said intersection).
The route of the B82 SBS.
Rather, the only consistent problem along the route from Gravesend to Starrett City is that illegally parked cars and trucks — which the politicians enabled by refusing to create more dedicated bus lanes — ruin what could otherwise be efficient, speedy, comfortable bus service.
The Department of Transportation wanted to create 6.5 miles of dedicated bus lane, but capitulated to the pols and create just five miles. Agency spokeswoman Alana Morales said DOT thinks that “this give and take process over the course of two-plus years has overall led to a stronger plan.”
It has not.
The good news? The B82 SBS is a delight. Off-bus ticketing and all-door boarding, plus more dedicated lanes trim roughly 18 minutes off the full journey from Seaview Avenue to 24th Avenue. That’s 21 percent faster than Google Maps estimated for the journey on the standard B82.
The improvement is impressive, but it would be so much better if so many drivers didn’t illegally park on the commercial stretch of Kings Highway in the neighborhood many call Madison (but I consider Midwood).
Here are just some of the drivers who selfishly slowed down hundreds of bus riders:
More people would take the bus and abandon their cars if drivers were less selfish about blocking buses in the public right of way, as they do here on Kings Highway. Photo: Gersh Kuntzman
Here’s another:
This one was unbelievable. The driver of the black SUV actually stopped directly across from the Frito-Lay truck, leaving literally no room for anyone to pass.
All of this “gridlock” could have been avoided with bus lanes and proper parking enforcement. But politicians deferred to the tiny portion of the electorate that gets around in private cars (or, more likely, the shipowners who want to have a spot in front of their stores so they can feed the meter all day). For some reasons, voters don’t hold them accountable when they simply lie; indeed, the MTA/DOT proposal for the SBS revealed that 75 percent of weekday shoppers on Kings Highway arrive either by transit or on foot. Only 23 percent drove to the commercial area. So why defer to the needs of that car-owning minority?
This bus even smiles at you. Photo: Ben Jay
Why not, instead, help people like Juvenal Gonzalez, a 22-year-old security guard who uses the new SBS to get from E. 1o5th Street to the B/Q station at Kings Highway.
“It gets me [to the subway] a lot faster because it skips so many stops,” he said, estimating that the SBS saves him 10 or 15 minutes.
If Felder wanted to help people like Gonzalez, he could refocus his attention on transit users, not the drivers who are getting in the way.
He hinted as much in that Oct. 11 letter to Byford, writing, “We ask you to take any, and all necessary steps to ease traffic flow.”
My guess, however, is that Felder meant “all necessary steps except for removing on-street car storage in favor of more dedicated bus lanes.” (Felder, as always, did not respond to a request for comment.)
