Over a decade ago, I graduated with an MFA in creative writing focused in fiction. I discovered that graduate school is mentally and psychologically draining and I had a mental health crisis during it.
It wasnât just the workload, or the fact that they gave me the 7am classes to teach for 2 years (idk who I pissed off) while having grad classes that ended at 9pm. Or the fact that despite teaching I didnât receive tuition remission.
No, the last year was especially bad because the university lost the professor I had come to work with because they disrespected them, and the other guy I was working with suddenly got a movie deal and his books translated into like 26 languages and he didnât need to live in that shithole city anymore.
That left the narcissist, who I thought would be a good chair because heâs also part of the lgbtq+ community and I was writing queer lit.
Alas, he was not. He was an abusive jerk who once went on a rant in class because a few students were turning in drafts not ready for feedback, and so he felt the need to tell the entire class that none of us would ever get published. Who was the only fiction writer left to chair my committee, but who outright told me he didnât âhave timeâ to read my thesis. Who, when I emailed him a week in advance to ask for a letter of support for a grant, also sent me a response that he didnât âhave time.â Who wouldnât sit down with me and talk about what he expected of my thesis (even length). In my mind I called him Douchebag McWhinypants.
One time he let an undergrad take our grad-level workshop. When she made an undergraduate mistake of writing outside her culture without enough research, we as her classmates were gentle in discussing why this was problematic in her short story. Unfortunately she was writing into the professorâs culture, and so when we were done he tore this poor little undergrad a new asshole. It ended with her crying in the bathroom and never coming back. One of the ugliest things Iâve ever seen, and certainly cast a pall over the rest of the semester.
At one point I found myself standing on the 4th floor of an open-air building, thinking about jumping, and I immediately went to the counseling center for help.
I figured if he wasnât going to support me in any way, I didnât want him on my committee. So I got the paperwork to kick him off and took it to the CW chair after filling it out. She was shocked I already had it filled out, and became my new thesis chair.
During my graduate reading, she introduced me with a lovely letter written by the person I had moved to work with, who was then gone. Meanwhile the narcissist introduced my classmate by talking solely about himself.
As a result, I havenât picked up my partial novel/thesis, though I want to. It really made me doubt my own fiction writing abilities. Part of why I write fanfiction is an attempt to heal.
Iâve since published a couple of original short stories and a fuckton of poetryâwell over 100 poems and a chapbook.
What I learned from this experience was how NOT to treat students. It was sadly not the only experience that taught me this.
Undergraduate and graduate school can be traumatizing experiences, particularly for queer, bipoc, and neurodivergent people.
Itâs been over a decade and Iâm honesty still dealing with it.
Douchebag McWhinypants is of course still teaching.

âthem who finally accessed her full powers after breaking from a big loss that represented for her what she wanted to become as an adultâ
reading is fundamental lol
Also willow only became âsupposedly suicidalâ i would call it more destructive not even self destructive cus she wanted everyone gone with her, after feeling the pain of the world after stealing gilesâ powers that the coven back home granted him. I still stand by what i said cus in moments of deep pain and emotional turmoil, you fall back to behaviors that are natural for you and how you built yourself and she built herself as a resentful wallflower with passive aggressive behaviors who copes by holding resentment in, instead of being forthcoming and not going from 0-100 against her friends (3x02/7x05/3x16/5x11) thats why she is so uncomfortable with anya cus is blunt and for willow itâs unnatural.
Thats also one of the reasons she was scared of losing tara both in separation and death cus she was scared to go back to the powerless shy girl that resented that her friend had powers.
Cordelia and willow also mirror each other on that but where willow envied buffyâs powers, cordelia envied her calling and the fact that she has a deeper purpose in life (when b and c find themselves in the cabin before going to the ball cordelia asks her why cares about winning the crown bc she already has something going for her ie her role as a slayer). Willow thought that the power would get her to become who she fantasizes herself to be confident, revered and powerful (3x01 w emulating b when she is patrolling//willow seeing her current self as a veneer of what she sees herself as her true form the girl we met in the pilot in 4x22) whereas cordelia was always comfortable with herself and how she came accross and only wanted her life to mean more than vapid gossip and clothes (in angel 3x11 skip even notices that in dreams people to fantasize as a little different, better looking or else and is surprised that even in her dreams she sees herself as her regular self, its also the episode where she is offered everything she has ever wanted and still walks away from it to embrace her calling and sacrifices herself in the process)
Willow in so many traits is much closer to xander in character than buffy, cordelia or tara who are both much closer in personalities than others in the group.
Btvs fans tend to love to paint some btvs as super heroes with no fault or if they have then they have an which creates the image of flat boring characters and writing, whats great about btvs is how petty and flawed and human the characters are (aside from the incessant quipiness) and yet they still show heroism in situations of danger, also jw made sure to paint buffy as the most heroic cus she has the calling of a slayer and is the hero and painted her after a tragic superhero spiderman who sacrifices himself despite all of his loss
See it like this, Buffy, Tara and Cordelia would sacrifice themselves to save the world but willow would never do that even after her whole arc is done she is still not the hero she thinks she is, thats why despite being touted as the most powerful she always keeps herself in the place of 2nd/3rd/4th in command cus it takes away the responsibility of fucking up and risking your own life.
Where tara faced a hell god and still stood strong and never gave her what she wanted, willow went out of her way despite buffyâs plea to not retaliate and went behind her back kickstarting glory into attacking buffy and everyone else directly therefore revealing who the key was and rendering taraâs sacrifice useless. willow is ultimately ego driven and those donât make for actual heroes.
Willow was so displeased with herself as a teen and ya that she was willing to do anything to garner more powers when buffy was faced with gaining more powers she rejected it cus she knew more powers would drive her away from herself and her loved ones. She understood and saw what it did to sineya and how it compromised her human nature and she knew who sourced and what was the source of this power. Willow wouldve most likely accepted it and when she discovered how power corrupted her she realized how giles was right.
Even her role in the last episode is pretty passive, yes she activates other but at no point do you see her fight with the others.
i know that cordelia is meant to be a foil and a mirror image to buffy and what her life couldâve been without her calling (and cordelia showing envy at certain moments that buffy even have a calling and therefore a meaning for her life) but
I wish they explored the mirror image thing with other characters cus they all have history that predates buffy stepping foot in sunnydale.
One of my favorite is cordelia in angel 1x22 and willow in btvs 6x22, both find themselves in a situation where they have to feel the pain of the entire world and thats when you see the contrast in their reaction. The power hungry wallflower thinks its better to destroy the world and put an end to allâs suffering and the coming of age arrogant vapid mean girl makes her mission to help the people to lessen that pain. It might seem cavalier and just a way to make the plot move forward as the writer wanted but its also a great representation of their character. It feels almost natural atp that the science nerd who has had to rationalize her feelings to cope with them who finally accessed her full powers after breaking from a big loss that represented for her what she wanted to become as an adult would decide that finishing it all would be better and a more direct solution than the altruistic and unattainable idea to help everyone around the world that the overtly confident adult who just found her purpose takes on the matter.
Its both a representation of their selfish needs/wants but also a clear reflection of the personality they were during their formative years and how it still defines them after they have changed as characters.
I like that people who have known each other most of their life off screen but donât have that much history still get to mirror each other in surprising ways from when we met them, it feels fated and right.

Monsters are real. Ghosts are too. They live inside of us, and sometimes, they win.
Dick Hallorann
Jack Torrance is a troubled man, but is hoping for a fresh start with a job as caretaker to the Lookout Hotel in Colorado. He takes his wife, Wendy and their son, Danny, who can hear peopleâs inner thoughts, or Shine. Instead of bringing the family together, the hotel is a house of horrors with enough painful memories to drag Jack back into madness and properly freak Danny out.Â
It is impossible to read this book with fresh eyes if you have seen the movie, but there are enough differences for you to take sides in the Stephen King vs. Stanley Kubrick debate, which still rages to this day even though the book and movie are over four decades old. It is the rare instance where both the movie and its source material are iconic.Â
Where in Maine are we? Well, most of the book takes place at the Colorado hotel, but the Torrances previously lived in the state while Jack was a teacher and then afterwards when Dick was a cook there.
Where is this in the King Timeline? 4th, 1977, 1st Bestseller
Connection to previous King books? None to speak of
Connection to The Dark Tower Series? Nothing explicit, but the house that Jakes defeats had huge Lookout vibes
Good Guy #1: Danny Torrance. Being so young and innocent, Danny just wants his family to get along, but does what needs to be done with Dickâs help.
Good Guy #2: Dick Hallorann. The dude drops everything and risks his life to drive cross-country and fend off Jack and the hotel. Heâs a hero.
Bad Guy #1: Jack Torrance. The hotel knows an evil vessel when it sees one. Despite how many times Jack makes excuses for himself, he just isnât a good guy.
Bad Guy #2: The Lookout Hotel. Plenty of bad things have gone down at this place and the bad energy has one thing in common: the creepy ass hotel.
Freakout Factor: Besides the whole book? The elevator working on its own and constantly featuring old-timey drunk people ghosts got me pretty good.
That ending though: Completely different from the movie, but it works for the way King set up in the narrative
Overall thoughts: King loyalists will hate me for this, but I think Iâm Team Kubrick. Granted I saw the movie first, but I think the way he formatted a pretty complicated novel into a two hour movie and put his own spin on it was impressive. Having Jack Nickolson on your side helps too. There was a lot of extemporaneous backstory with the hotel that never went any where involving the mob.
Total Ranking: 7.5 Croquet Mallets (Out of 10)

St. Mungos, since feeling is first who pays attention and Muggle FWB for the WIP Game?
Thank you for the interest, Anon! This took a while because things in my personal life are in chaos, but thank you for the request.
St. Mungos
This is my Healer!Ginny story that has been lurking in the back of my brain since last year. Iâve written a good amount of words, but then an entirely different plot appeared and now I may have to rewrite most of it, hence itâs lack of progress. But I still really want to finish this one day.
Ginny is a Healer on the 4th floor of St. Mungos. Her first patient is someone named Harry Evans. (This is a Harry never to Hogwarts story.)
The first thing Ginny notices is his eyes. Theyâre the most vivid, bright green that sheâs ever seen. Itâs unnerving how unseeing they are. A pressure builds up in her chest, an aching pain and nostalgia she canât place.
The morning light from the window washes over his face, dancing off these round wire-rimmed glasses. His dark hair (black like a blackboard) appears to be on some ineffable scale of entropy â tousled and pointed in every which way, yet somehow itâs charming and works well with his sharp, unconventional features. Some of that hair spills over a bandage wrapped around his forehead.Â
But itâs also the pleasant, vacancy in those eyes that strikes her, like sheâs looking at the embers of a once bright flame. He looks like an innocent, half-lost child, his lips curled in a ghost of a smile.
Her clipboard and supervisor tell her his name is Harry Evans. The name creates an itch at the back of her head, something she wants to scratch at, but the odd sense of nostalgia must be misplaced significance. Heâs her first real patient.Â
He must matter to someone important to have his own room on the fourth floor of St. Mungoâs Ward 49. Usually they lumped all the long-term spell damaged patients in one place, let them wander under the supervision of one Healer. But this room is spacious and private, protected by complicated wards and concealing charms. Someone really cares about Harry Evans, and for some reason it causes a subtle burning behind her eyes. Maybe itâs because he looks like a newborn fawn.Â
Who wouldnât want to protect him?
âYouâre new, but heâs not difficult. Itâs mostly maintenance,â her supervisor says. âHe makes it easy, donât you, Harry?â
Harryâs gaze drifts toward the window.
Ginny scans his file. Itâs actually surprisingly thick, but a lot of it has been redacted. The summary page sums it up though: heâs twenty-one; he has been here for three years; the diagnosis is vague (severe curse damage); thereâs a long slew of attempted cures, none of which were successful obviously; now itâs about making sure heâs comfortable whatever that means.
âAll right, let me know if run into any trouble.â Her supervisor is already starting for the door.
âUm â what about â I know his treatment is maintenance, but can IâŠ?â Ginnyâs not sure what sheâs trying to say exactly. Harry Evans has seen a lot of Healers if the list of attempted cures is any indication, but she gave up Quidditch to become a Healer in the long-term spell damage ward specifically because she wanted to do something.
Her supervisor gives her a rueful smile.Â
âStick to maintenance. Harry Evans is a special case.â
Ginny turns back to Harry, who is facing her again, looking painfully innocent.
Somehow she doesnât need convincing that heâs special.
since feeling is first who pays attention
This was a gift for the Harry/Ginny Discord Incognito Elf exchange. I managed to finish in time to gift it, but I want to take some additional time to rework it before posting. It is missed moments over the years as Ginny and her feelings for Harry evolve.
Ginny presses her face against the wall, peeking between the stair spindles. Her bright brown eye lands on the two boys hunched over a chessboard. Her brother Ron and Harry Potter, who, despite appearing to be losing, doesnât look the least upset.
Harry Potter.Â
The Harry Potter is in her house. Looking comfortable on their couch despite the faded, mended cushions. His face crinkles in laughter at something Ron says, his green eyes bright with contentment. Ginny doesnât miss the occasional look of awe at the things sheâs always taken for granted. Itâs almost as if he canât believe he is really here.
He isnât what she expected â isnât what she imagined he would look like after all those years listening to Mum recite her favorite bedside story, about the heroic Savior of the Wizarding World. She had pictured neat hair, a dashing smile, someone who would recognize a comrade in her and take her on all sorts of adventures. He would be different, he wouldnât discount her dreams of flying and doing everything her brothers could and more.
Instead, Harry Potter has the messiest hair ever, a sheepish smile, and clothes that he nearly swims in. Oh, and he has somehow missed the memo and found the comrade in her brother Ron instead.Â
Her fingers curl around the spindle. Not for the first time, a spike of envy shoots through her. If only she were a little older or a boy. Then maybe she would be the one playing chess with Harry. Maybe she would be the one to hide under his invisibility cloak and battle trolls and face You-Know-Who with him.
Ginny presses her face a little closer and lets out a sigh.
But Harry Potter is kind. He ignores all the times she has made a fool of herself. And he has the greenest eyes sheâs ever seen. They are as green as those glowing jars of pickled toads at the Potion ingredients store Mum had taken her to. Pretty and kind and not dismissive of her patched clothes or her glowing red face.
Harry Potter. If he likes Ron, if he looks like he actually likes the Burrow, if his face grimaces at the attention at Flourish and Blotts, could it be possible that one day he could like her too?
Muggle FWB
Hah, so this was the first idea that I rambled off to my beta, which ended up with long, long emails back and forth on this idea that I never wrote! Hereâs a snippet of that exchange:
Harry thinks he only see Ginny as a little sister, so when she suddenly proposes that they become friends with benefits in uni, heâs floored and says theyâre practically family. Blinded by her anger over the rejection, she kisses him so that he knows what heâll be missing. Of course, he then realizes his attraction to her. As their physical relationship progresses, they develop feeeeeeelings (gasp!). But Ginny thinks she only wants a physical relationship and once they have sex, it'll get out of her system. Harry has to work to convince her that she actually wants more.
But the backdrop is that Ginny doesn't think she wants more than sex is that when she was 11, she was kidnapped by Tom Riddle for as a kid (they met at the park a lot, and none of her brothers/Harry/anyone realized he'd been "befriending" her). Kid Harry figures out where Riddle took her and saves her.
Ginny wasnât molested but she/Harry/everyone else is deeply affected by this event even though they don't realize it. Ginny thinks she's overcome it, and she's still a BAMF some the books but she's not fully over it as shown by her fear of being emotionally involved with Harry. It's why Harry refuses for a long time to think of her anything else outside of a brotherly way.Â
Ginny has a really bad sexual experience (though it doesn't go all the way), and as a result she's disgusted by men (not scared), but doesn't feel any revulsion with Harry. After not being able to get close to any boy for a long time, she decides to proposition Harry. Harry, being noble, absolutely refuses at first, but she kisses him, he's very attracted to her, and is convinced by her that he's helping her get over this tick. So it's FWB but it fits their personalities, and still stays true to the Ginny is subconsciously afraid of a real relationship/intimacy with Harry, who realizes he wants more but doesn't know if just getting to be physical is more than he'll ever deserve and he wants what he can get if not real love from her - until, of course, he realizes he can't do it anymore and she has to decide if she's brave enough to actually let herself feel.
HAHA omg Iâm reading over my emails and I talk about getting into The Changeling and only sleeping 4/5 hrs a night and then the exchange ends with my coming up with my alternate dimension idea of Harry getting thrown into the BWL!Neville universe. So you guys can see why this story never went anywhere despite several thousands words between me and my beta.
â
Whew, long post. Hope that satisfied your curiosity!Â
Iâm honestly not sure there are any left, but let me know if you have any other wip asks! Though note that I will be rather absent in the near-future because of life.

My thoughts on a more individual scale, and I've intentionally separated them from the previous two posts to keep from accidently overshadowing the words that have come directly from the people of Gaza.
But first two quick points:
1. Netanyahu doesn't want people to pay attention to what he's doing, I would think that's a good enough reason to watch him and his ministers like hawks.
2. For US residents/citizens/people with US phone numbers who are willing to play a little fast and loose with the rules. The White House has a comment line.
Phone Number 202-456-1111
TTY/TTD at 202-456-6213.
You can also send letters so if your up too it at:
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC 20500
And finally if snail mail isn't your thing, here's a contact form that includes sends an email direct to the big house.
The White House Email
When I knew nothing of substance about the Israli occupation, I was a supporter of neutrality. When I learned the truth, when I learned the history, when I learned the death tolls and the near unimaginable conditions that Palistinians across the globe have endured. When I learned about how Isreals government and its Zionistic expansion hangs above the heads of Palistinians in Gaza and the West Bank like an nuclear warhead with the name Damocles painted on the side.
I am lucky enough that I have learned all of these things recently. The blade that world handed me on a platter of Islamophobia, and ignorance had only been embedded in my flesh for a few years and I had even fewer chances to do reactionary harm.
And yet, despite this even as I work to pull this knife from my chest I can see, and smell, and feel how the rot clings too it. I can see how the scars fresh and pink around the edges write out name after name after name in a language I cannot even read. Names that I will learn and I will never forget. Names that I will hold close to my heart because I have no way of knowing if anyone else is doing the same.
I am lucky enough to have learned early, and to have only done harm through passivity rather than ever espousing direct harm. But the weight of the harm done while I did nothing and said nothing is still a weight I will happily bear, especially if ut grants me the opportunity to keep ut from growing heavier.
I can only image how much heavier it would be if I had said nothing for longer or if I had chosen to warm my hands against the flames of vitriol and hatred that the Isreali government, Netanyahu and the Globam West have been stoking against Palestine for decade.
TLDR:
I have made peace with the weight of my previous inaction, of my ignorance, of my passivity, I happily bear this weight, change my ways, and do my best to stand besides those who fight against the very same type of complicit, laissez-faire, attitudes so prevalent in the West that has allowed for and encouraged a genocide sparked by zionism and fueled by Islamophobia to burn unrestrained.
Especially when in this moment that all the people of Gaza ask is to be seen, and for their calls for help to be answered. I cannot fly across the ocean and single handedly change things, but I can hope that by sharing what Gazans are showing us, are telling us, and are begging us to listen to just so that they know that they aren't dieing alone.
Addendum:
If you can, call your representatives, the only people who benefit from a disenfranchised public are those who disagree with it.
Addendum 2:
This is US specific, but poll data shows that nearly 3/4ths of the population are in favor of a ceasefire, if Genocide-Joe wants coat our hands in Palistinian blood, we should at least make him deal with us directly. The White House Comment line is 202-456-1111 or using TTY/TTD at 202-456-6213.
Actual TLDR:
When the dust settles, one way or the other, and you look upon what ever remains, will you make peace with the weight of your own inaction or worse the weight of your own encouragement?
If you can't, do something. Even if all you do is share posts about what is really happening to Palistinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Even if all you can do is Google what the Nakba is or the history of Israli border expansion.
And if you have no issue doing nothing, if you have no issue encouraging genocide, then I can only hope that eventually, someday when you lease expect it, that the weight of all that you've done chokes you and you're forced to acknowledge the harm that you've done.
This genocide has been going on for 75 years, if you didn't know last month thats ok I would bet that many people didn't. It is unreasonable to expect for someone to know something that they haven't been told, much less something that was actively kept hidden from them.
But that isn't true anymore.
To be seen is to be known. There is a genocide happening that can be seen by everyone. It images are posted on Instagram, it's videos, all but live, are on TikTok, it's stories written on Tumblr.
But if you cannot do the Palistinian people the dignity of watching, of listening, of rembering their stories and ensuring that they will not be forgotten. I hope you know that the people around you see your lack of care, they see your lack of moral or ethical fortitude. They see how you are complicit. And they see how you don't seem to care about any of those things.

heyy, gm/gn wherever you are!
So, I'd like to know Adrienne and Gilbert dealt with her being sick during their imprisonment in Olmutz? And also, how were their daughters during all of that??
Thank youu :)
Hello msrandonstuff,
Thank you, it was actually morning for me, when I read your message.
Adrienneâs time in prison and her health are best described by her daughter Virginie in the book that the two women co-wrote (each of them wrote about their mother respectively). In the second half (Virginieâs half) of Life of Madame de Lafayette we can read the following:
As might have been expected, my mother's health had suffered much. The sudden passage from the most violent agitations to the most sedentary life, for we had neither air nor exercise, all contributed to give her an illness which declared itself a few months after our arrival. Never did she show more meritorious submission to my father's wishes, than when she determined to write to the Emperor for permission to go and consult the doctors at Vienna. She only consented to do so in the hopes of being of use to the prisoners'. At the end of seven weeks the Commander of OlmĂŒtz, who had not yet visited her in prison, came to intimate a verbal refusal to leave it, unless she gave up all hopes of returning. He asked at the same time for a written answer. It was soon made.
Adrienneâs written answer was:
April, 4th 1796.
The Commander of OlmĂŒtz having declared to me that, on my request to go for a week to Vienna in order to consult the doctors, His Imperial Majesty does not permit me, under any pretence whatever to go to Vienna, and only allows me to leave this prison on condition never to enter it again, I have the honor here to renew my answer. It was my duty towards my family and friends to try and obtain the advice necessary for my health, but they well know that I cannot accept the conditions offered to me. I cannot forget that while we were both on the eve of perishing, I through the tyranny of Robespierre, M. de Lafayette through the physical and moral sufferings of his captivity, I was neither allowed to receive any accounts of him, nor to let him know that his children and I were still alive. I shall not expose myself to the horrors of another separation.
Therefore, whatever may be the state of my health, or the hardships of this abode for my daughters, we shall all three take advantage of His Imperial Majesty's goodness in allowing us to share this captivity in all its details.
Noailles Lafayette.
The letter that Adrienne send to the Emperor is also printed in the book:
OlmĂŒtz, February 6th 1796
Sir,
Had I sooner been given leave to write, I should long since have offered my grateful thanks to Your Imperial Majesty for having permitted us to share the captivity of one so dear. To these thanks, Sir, I shall add no details on M. de Lafayette's condition, however different it may be from what I imagined on leaving Your Majesty's presence; to my great regret, I shall only speak of myself. My health, impaired by sufferings and misfortunes, my duty towards those who are still left to me in this world, constrain me to solicit permission to go for some days to Vienna, leaving my daughters with their father, in order to consult doctors on my state. I should not have importuned Your Majesty with this request, had I not been told that it could only be granted by Yourself.
I entreat, etc.
Continuing in her daughters book, we can read:
My mother's illness made rapid progress. The doctor was only allowed to see her a moment during the officer's visit. Being ignorant of the French language, he could not understand her, but would express in Latin his fears to my father. She had a violent eruption, first on her arms, which swelled in such a manner that she could neither make use of them nor lift them up, and afterwards on her legs. Fever scarcely ever left her. This state lasted eleven months, from October 1796, till September 1797. During these eleven months no alleviation of the prison treatment was obtained. She had not even an armchair. Her sufferings did not in the least impair her spirits. Seeing her always serene, always enjoying my father's company and the consolations she had brought with her, we were all less anxious than we ought to have been. This explains how, save in the beginning of the illness, we found pleasure in our quiet life.
As we can see, there was not an awful lot that either Adrienne or La Fayette could possible do. We see from Virginieâs writing (but also from other statements) that La Fayette urged and pleaded with Adrienne that she should leave with their daughters but Adrienne (and Anastasie and Virginie) refused and I think at a certain point in time La Fayette just gave up trying. Their company brought him an immense relief and a great deal of comfort after all.
The question remains, why was Adrienne not permitted to visit the doctors in Vienna and than to simply return to the prison? After all, she and her daughters had been already granted access. The answer is, the womanâs presence shed a very bad light on the Austrians. La Fayette had been imprisoned, without actual charges, but he was a men, he was a soldier, a revolutionary â Austria could find ways to justify his imprisonment. But Adrienne, Virginie and Anastasie were woman, young children, they were pious and virtuous woman of noble birth, sharing their husband and fathers captivity despite their own sufferings â that caused quite a stir in Europe at the time and I think the Emperor was happy for very change to get them out of his prison without making himself looking even worse.
As to Virginieâs and Anastasieâs health, it seems as if they did rather well. In his first letter to Washington after being released from prison, La Fayette writes on October 6, 1797:
My own Health, altho it is Impaird, Could, I think, tolerably Support a Voyage [to America] âMy daughters are not illâBut Mrs Lafayetteâs Sufferings in this Cruel UnHealthy Captivity Have Had Such a deplorable effect Upon Her, that in the opinion of Every phisician, and Every Man of Sense, it Would Be an Act of Madness to Let Her embark at this Advanced Season of the Year (...)
Most other accounts agree with that narrative. Adrienne was seriously ill, La Fayette was not well but ultimately fine and their daughters were healthy. I have only ever come across one account that said that one of the two sisters was ill as well, without going into detail which one. I think that account was from one of their aunts but I can not remember, I am sorry!
It is however highly unbelievable that Virginia and Anastasie never once did fell ill during their time in prison. Even their âluxury-treatmentâ (the guard had an awful lot of pity for them) was terrible but their illnesses were probably never long-lasting or overly concerning.
I hope that could answer your question and I hope you had/have an amazing day!

AARON
All but mariners plunged in the foaming brine and quit the vessel, then all afire with me: [he] cried, 'Hell is empty and all the devils are here.' â William Shakespeare, The Tempest
The team is working on the case.
Aaron tries desperately to remember this when the fear starts to rise in his chest again, squashing his lungs and pressing violently against his already groaning heart. The team is working on the case, they always solve the case, and he trusts them with his life because, at the end of the day, thatâs whatâs at stake here, isnât it? Haley and Jack are all he has in this world; he absolutely cannot lose them.
The team is working on the case.
Frustration builds as he lays in a hospital bed, completely incapacitated during the most important case of his life, and itâs only made worse by the knowledge that Spencer is hurt, too. He was absolutely furious when he eventually found out after asking his whereabouts on his third day of hospitalisation, having realised he hadnât seen him once at the hospital.
Rossi had deliberately omitted Spencer being shot from his account of the case. Why, he had no idea. Did he not think it important that one of their own was seriously injured? Aaron hopes not. Did he think he was unable to handle the information at that point? Certainly more probable, but still infuriating.
It was all exacerbated by the guilty expression on JJâs face when he asked whoâd been visiting him. Sheâd told him that there hadnât been time, that they were working on the case 24/7, that Penelope had heard from him and he was fine, but it wasn't enough to satiate his rising anger. Aaron doesnât quite understand the blistering fury he still feels when he thinks about Spencer injured and alone, abandoned by his team, but he expects itâs because he still feels protective over the youngest member of the team.
Thatâs almost definitely it.
He takes a month off from work, but he has no idea what to do with himself, especially once he's discharged from hospital and returns to a lonely apartment in which he was brutally attacked by the FBIâs Most Wanted Serial Killer. Heâs miserable without seeing Jack regularly and fearful of the length of time heâll have to wait until he can see him and Haley again as he tries desperately not to think of the possibility that he may never see them again.
A lot of time is spent touring his DVD and box set collections and passing the time by cooking and exercising as much as his healing body will allow him. Every functional moment, every spare shred of brain power he has to spend, though, is directed at the Foyet case.
Finding Nemo is playing on the TV when thereâs a knock at the door a week into his stay at home â admittedly, his collection is not all that large and heâd exhausted the more age-appropriate films far too quickly â so he turns it off and peels his exhausted bones off the couch. Most of the team have dropped by at various points, bringing food and gifts and comfort in the worst time of his life, so heâs expecting Emily or Rossi or JJ, but instead, itâs Spencer standing on his doorstep.
He doesnât have the time to school his expression so his surprise is written all over his face, and Spencer must see it because he immediately cringes and deflates, as though suddenly doubting whether showing up out of the blue was a good idea after all.
âHi.â Aaron smiles welcomingly to try and counter the negative thoughts that are almost certainly worming their way into Spencerâs mind. âCome in.â He steps aside and allows him to hobble awkwardly into the living room, his crutches dragging slightly along the carpet, the telltale sign of someone not quite accustomed to them yet.
âI hope itâs alright I came,â Spencer says shyly, almost apologetic. âI should have texted but I dropped my phone under the sofa and I canât get down on the floor to retrieve it.â He blushes at his admission but gratefully accepts Aaronâs invitation to sit down.
Aaron smiles as warmly as he can manage, joining him on the couch. âYou're fine, don't worry; itâs not like Iâm up to much. Iâm just happy to have some company.â He almost confesses that he was watching a childrenâs film before Spencer showed up, but decides thatâs perhaps revealing just a little too much. âHow have you been doing? I did message you, but I suppose your phone gathering dust under a couch explains the lack of a response.â
âYou did?â Spencerâs eyes meet his and he looks utterly bewildered for some reason, seemingly surprised that Aaron would do such a thing. âSorry, Iâ yes, that would be why, uh.â He looks down, clearly trying to gather himself as he plays with his fingers. âIâm fine, though. Obviously, the leg is a little sore, but. Iâll be back to work on Monday.â
âGood,â he replies, though he knows a gunshot wound will still be more than a little sore only two weeks after the initial injury. âHow long do you have that?â He gestures vaguely to the brace around Spencerâs left leg.
âNot really sure,â Spencer says, looking sort of bemused by the contraption. âItâs pretty inconvenient, so I hope it isnât too long.â
Aaron canât help but smile at the small grin on Spencerâs face as he looks down at the brace. It looks⊠genuine. He doesnât have the wherewithal to contemplate why thatâs so endearingly surprising. âAre you looking forward to going back?â he asks, settling back into the couch cushions as he feels his muscles protest against his strained position.
Spencer seems to struggle for a response, unsure how to answer him. If he wasnât so damn exhausted he might try and figure this slightly odd behaviour out, but the inherently complicated puzzle that is Spencer Reid feels like one too many right now. âIâm looking forward to not being quite so bored,â he eventually replies with a short, self-deprecating laugh. Aaron almost flinches at the sound, so foreign for Spencerâs gentle soul.
Heâs fiddling with his crutches and the profiler in Aaron is screaming at him to decode whatâs going on, but he forces himself to push it to the side. Spencer is a capable man. Heâll be fine. Aaron, on the other hand, needs to try and save his energy for his family.
âI can understand that,â Aaron says diplomatically, careful to not reply too emphatically one way or another. âThe boredomâs crippling sometimes. Thankfully, the team coming round has been saving me from having to watch too many movies.â
Spencer seems to sort of shutter down as the words leave his mouth for reasons he doesnât know or comprehend, but he does know that the resulting silence is awkward and he feels like heâs stuck his foot in his mouth by saying something totally innocuous. Has he had a falling out with someone or something? Is it something to do with not having many visitors in the hospital? He wouldn't blame him at all if that's still a sore spot.
âIâm going to have a coffee, I think,â he says, getting up carefully from the sofa and heading towards the kitchen despite the pain in his torso begging him to sit down. âDo you need anything?â
Spencerâs head snaps up, suddenly back and engaged. âUh, no, Iâm alright,â he says, and he sounds almost⊠choked up? âI should probably get going, anyway.â
âOh, uh, okay,â Aaron says, a little surprised. His mind is too foggy with pain and grief to process the microexpressions and endlessly odd behaviours Spencer is exhibiting. He knows how much Spencer appreciates his company usually, so his leaving so soon is just wrong.
He doesnât want him to go, he loves spending time with the younger man, and even if he is acting a little strangely, heâd much rather Spencer be with him than away from him, especially when the world seems so much more personally dangerous than it was before. At least if Spencer is close to him then he knows heâs safe, and thatâs all he deserves, really. To be safe.
âSay hello to the team from me,â he says, fumbling with the door handle and awkwardly making his way out. He briefly turns back, âbye, Hotch,â before heâs closing the door behind him. Aaron can hear the plastic click of the crutches on the linoleum of the corridor as he hurries away from the apartment.
Before he can think much of it, though, heâs drawn to the couch, exhaustion overtaking his body. Heâs asleep in seconds.
Eventually, he goes back to work and for a small amount of time, things seem like theyâre going to be okay. Emily picks him up and takes him in, Penelope gives him homemade cookies â not that he didnât already have an ample supply of the fruits of her kitchen waiting to be eaten in his fridge â and sure, heâs a little stressed and abrasive throughout the first case, but no-one holds it against him. Itâs a little tricky when he doesnât manage to stop Darin Call from shooting his father, but heâs calmed down by the time Emily walks him back to his apartment.
âHeâs not alone,â she says as they stand in his small living room, talking about Call but looking rather pointedly in his direction. They both know what she means.
Penelope and Sam, the marshall looking after his family, help him see Jack again on his 4th birthday â granted, over one of her many computer screens â and he has to swallow down a sob at the sight of him swinging in the park, looking happy as ever. He tries to be furious at Haley for uprooting Jack again, causing them to move to a halfway house because of a few phone calls to her mother, but thereâs nothing left in him. Anger at the inevitable takes energy he simply doesnât have. Itâs why he simply accepted it when the money for the counter-surveillance against Foyet ran out. Fighting seems pointless.
He does manage to get angry, though, when he finds out Spencer lied to him by telling him he was cleared to travel when he wasnât. Heâd put himself at risk for deep vein thrombosis or other complications, so he calls him out as soon as the initial debrief ends. He looks sort of relieved to be staying behind with Penelope, which is a little strange since heâs always so eager to be in the thick of the action, but he brushes it off and they get on with yet another case.
Of course, itâs significantly harder to deal with when the Bureau questions him as Unit Chief of his beloved team. He takes a step back for the sake of the team, and heâs glad he does, but things donât feel quite so good, quite so positive. Heâs suddenly following Morganâs directions instead of giving them, no longer a leader, and itâs⊠humiliating.
Still, he trusts Morgan. He trusts the team in general, and they still solve cases, and they still gel together like a well-oiled machine. Things are okay. Thereâs still hope.
But then.
Then Karl Arnold sends him a message.
Then he agonises, fights, wrestles, swims against the current to try and save his family in time.
Then Haley dies.
đ§
Aaron thanks every god he doesnât believe in that Jack is too little to really understand whatâs happened. He knows Mommy isnât around anymore, he knows something bad happened, that Daddy is sad, but beyond that, he has no real comprehension of the situation.
In the first days after Haleyâs death, he spends a lot of time cuddled up in bed, holding Jack as close to him as he can, hugging close all he has left of his ex-wife, desperately gripping onto the one person he loves more than anything else in this world.
Once heâs cleared by the Bureau, he can at least breathe a little easier in knowing his job is safe; he can provide for his baby boy. What follows, however, is less pleasant than job security.
Watching his team cry at her funeral and seeing Haleyâs family in pieces almost does him in. Heâs not usually the kind of man to show emotion, but he canât help swallowing a choked sob as he tells everyone gathered just how incredible Haley was, how lucky he and Jack and everyone who knew her were, and just how much he loved her.
âIf Haley were with us today, she would ask us not to mourn her death but to celebrate her life. She would tell us⊠she would tell us to love our families unconditionally, and to hold them close because, in the end, theyâre all that matter.â
As he reads his speech, he canât help but think of his team. For years, they've been his second family â arguably, as much as it pains him to admit it, the family he prioritised the most â and now, they're all he and Jack have. All of them have reminded him of that over the past few days, between helping with funeral arrangements and making food for them both, constant check-ups and distractions and messages of love and support. Having his back in the moment that mattered most.
âOkay, you can go ahead,â he murmurs to Jack as he lifts him up onto his hip, the last two standing at her coffin. He watches as his son places his white rose on his motherâs coffin before following suit, stomach constricting with grief as he does so. âBlow Mommy a kiss.â
And he walks, his son clutched desperately in his arms, towards the wake.
(The team leaves the funeral, called to a case that â despite everything thatâs happened â he canât help but long to be a part of even if he knows heâd be no use right now, lost in the haze of grief and the massive life change that is suddenly being a single parent, the sole carer for his son.
He uses the time off to pack Jackâs things and move them into his own flat, trying as hard as he can to keep life as normal as possible for a little boy who just lost his mom. Actually having time to be with Jack feels like the only possible good thing to come out of this situation, and he tries to be present in the moment as much as humanly possible, grateful for every second he spends chattering away with him about the dramas and dilemmas of being four-years-old, or playing dinosaurs with him, or stroking his hair while he falls asleep.
Strauss visits, says hello to Jack, and then offers him early retirement. With a heavy heart, he promises heâll think about it.
Jessica offers to stay with Jack while heâs away. He calls Strauss, and he declines.)
Almost as soon as the team gets back from their case in Tennessee, Spencer shows up again. This time heâs only leaning heavily on a cane instead of awkwardly wrestling against two crutches, and his brace is gone.
âHi,â he breathes, smiling hesitantly at Hotch. It doesnât reach his eyes. âIâm sorry to show up unannounced again. This time I donât have a dusty phone to use as an excuse, I just wanted to come as soon as possible and see how you and Jack were doing.â
âItâs fine, Spencer, donât worry,â he says reassuringly, opening the door wide enough to allow him into the sitting room. Truthfully, heâs glad heâs turned up. Spencerâs a soothing presence; innocent, almost, in his openness and honesty, how trusting he is of everyone around him despite how hurt heâs been in the past. And while the others always scoff and groan at his academic and overly factual rambles, heâs rather fond of them.
âI donât know if you heard,â he says as he takes a seat on Aaronâs sofa again, âbut we solved the case.â His leg is clearly bothering him still: heâs subconsciously rubbing it through the fabric of his trousers and his facial expressions are showing subtle indicators of pain.
âI never doubted it,â Aaron says, face soft and open, happy to have Spencer here. He joins him on the couch. âHow is it, working cases with the injury?â He wonders whether asking about work will have the same response as before, but he seems slightly calmer this time around. He hadnât noticed anything amiss when heâd gone back, though he had, of course, been a little preoccupied; there's plenty he could have missed.
Spencer considers for a moment, looking marginally more subdued than the last time heâd sat on his sofa. âItâs⊠not easy, but Iâm sort of used to it now. I donât mind sitting out the fieldwork too much; besides, I get to talk to Penelope more.â He looks like heâs not saying something, averting his eyes as he talks but Aaron doesnât push. He doesnât want Spencer to bolt, but he makes a mental note to keep an eye on him when he eventually gets back to work again. âI heard through the grapevine that Strauss offered you retirement.â
He looks up at Aaron with wide, hesitant eyes and for a moment, his heart clenches tightly, a rush of some emotion he canât quite place flooding his chest and squeezing the breath out of him. Itâs only for a second: the momentâs over before he can actually process it, but it leaves him floundering for a response.
âIâ ah, yes. She did,â he affirms, nodding his head, âbut I declined.â
âYou did?â Spencer asks, suddenly looking far brighter and another flash of that feeling flares in his chest.
As such, he canât help the fond, private smile that spreads across his face. âI did.â
Spencer looks like heâs about to say something else but heâs interrupted by Jack dashing into the room, flying his toy plane around the room. As soon as he spots Spencer on the sofa, he dashes over, eager to show off his toy.
âWow, thatâs amazing, buddy,â Spencer says, looking as interested in a wooden replica of an aeroplane as an extremely well-educated adult possibly could. Thatâs probably because, Aaron thinks with a smile, he actually is.
Before Aaron knows it, heâs watching him be dragged towards his sonâs new bedroom to inspect all his other toys. Jack has always loved Spencer and Spencer has always loved Jack, sharing a bond over an interest in all things scientific and mechanical, albeit at vastly different levels.
He hadnât noticed how dull Spencerâs been looking until he brightens so considerably as soon as Jack is engaging with him, and his brows furrow. Trusting Jack to keep Spencer well entertained for the next few minutes, he fills a glass with water and leans against the counter of the kitchen, sipping it quietly as he thinks it over.
Now that he considers it properly, Spencer has seemed rather downcast and far quieter than usual recently. Not that heâd had the energy to address it, or even really clock it, the last time Spencer had turned up at his apartment, but his weird, abrupt departure was clearly triggered by discussion of the team. He starts to get some food out for lunch as he resolves to keep a much closer eye on things when he gets back to work.
He only thinks it over for a few more minutes before Spencer emerges into the kitchen, one hand clutching his cane and another gently holding Jackâs. Heâs still bombarding him with questions about planes and trains and cars, but Spencer fields them expertly, managing to actually get an answer in before another question takes its place, a skill Aaron has yet to master. His chest clenches for the third time in the small period Spencerâs been in his flat as he watches the two together.
âWould you like to stay for lunch?â he offers, taking in Spencerâs small frame and dark eye bags; he canât help the protective desire to feed him and make sure heâs happy and healthy.
âIf you wouldnât mind,â Spencer says, looking pleased with the offer, mouth twisting into a little smile. Aaron probably shouldnât feel quite so delighted at his acceptance, but he brushes it aside and turns to face his son, who is watching them curiously.
âHey Jack,â he says, crouching down to face him, âhow about we get you some lunch, yeah? You can continue asking Spencer some questions while we eat. How does that sound?â
Watching Jackâs face light up as he nods happily and looking up to see Spencerâs small smile still firmly pasted on his face makes him feel, for the first time since Haley died, like thereâs a future for him. A good one.

work too much
Pairing: Mark + reader, Established relationship, Med School/Doctor!Mark (I canât stop thinking about this omg)
Genre: Fluff, angst if you squint, and itâs me so a little bit of crack LOL
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1.4kÂ
Summary: Itâs the middle of Pandemic; thereâs been a lot of changes to your life, but Mark is one of the only things that have always been constant, and youâre thankful for that. But Mark in typical Mark fashion is stressed and tends to over work himself, so you always try your best to support him in your own way
Can be read as an extension to more than or as a stand alone
Notes:Â proof read? ofc not. but Iâll say it once and Iâll say it again...Mark is a little awk and always works so hard (poor bby), so imagining him as a super stressed pre-med major (now Doctor!!) still absolutely wrecks me thank you goodbyeÂ
---
When the pandemic hit, it was simultaneously a blessing and a curse. A blessing, because online school definitely saved your grades (chegg also played a supporting role in this). And a curse because you and 7 million people suddenly found yourselves in a pandemic, and a pretty serious one at that.
When the news first came out about a small viral breakout in China, you didnât think much of it. You were scared shitless when news of a recurring Ebola epidemic came to your attention, WebMd-ing every symptom and prevention technique so obsessively to the point that Mark had to confiscate your laptop for a second.Â
âObjectively itâs a really serious viral disease, but your chances of getting it are astronomically low. A vaccine was already developed since the first serious breakout in 2014. Plus, most of the cases are in Africa, and itâs very contained-â Mark stops. âAre you even listening?â
âI am,â you protest. âBut Iâm still going to be scared no matter what you say.â
Mark sighs, sitting back down on the couch after gently placing your laptop on the coffee table.Â
He ruffles your hair playfully, and your frown only gets deeper. âYou silly, silly girl. Take my word for it, youâre fine.â
To be honest, you really should, but anxiety doesnât discriminate, not even when you have a very knowledgeable boyfriend in medical school.
When you snuggle into his side and wail jokingly (or are you?) about being afraid of dying for the 4th time that week, you can almost see the defeat flash in Markâs eyes. Yet, he doesnât complain, and tells you things are going to be okay while wrapping his arms around you comfortingly.Â
For Mark, youâre eternally thankful.Â
When the pandemic hit, you didnât really mind quarantining. You had the necessities: toilet paper, a Netflix subscription, and Mark, not necessarily in order of importance of course. The early months of the pandemic gave you a perfect time to recharge from all the grad school craziness. What really drove you insane were the lack of people taking social distancing and quarantine orders with a grain of salt. Mark scolds you when you say itâs just another form of natural selection, that you like to think that those kinds of people peaked in high school.Â
Mark on the other hand, is having the opposite experience, Because of the severity of the virus, he graduated from Med school a whole two months early to join other health care workers in the fight against covid. Mark is a smart guy; heâs cautious and plans accordingly-but youâre not going to lie- Mark being in the hospital scares you.
Although he doesnât like to talk about it, you can tell things are stressful for him from the way his shoulders droop when he thinks you arenât looking. Dark circles around his normally twinkling eyes, and youâre not even exaggerating when you think you see a white hair or two.Â
Mark doesn't like to talk about it and you understand, instead showing your support through your actions; you time dinner so that itâs ready right when he comes home, and are sure to give him time to recharge on his own. Mark also has trouble sleeping at night because of his work schedule, so you ordered a white noise machine in an attempt to soothe him. It works, but the poor boy still looks stressed in his sleep, with his eyebrows slightly furrowed and tense. You consider asking him to take some time off from the hospital, but Mark has a big heart and you believe in him. Itâs a big part of why you and Mark get along so well, you think,--you have an uncanny ability to know what the other needs, even if they arenât necessarily aware of it.
âAre you mad at me?â
Youâve just switched off the light. At 8:30, itâs a little early for most people to go to bed but you donât mind it- you know heâs exhausted, and you donât want to pressure him to stay up. If it were up to you, youâd be watching Netflix all night.Â
When you turn to look at him in the moonlight, he looks so worried that you feel your heart tighten a little.
âOf course not,â you frown. âWhat makes you say that?â
Mark scratches the back of his head. âItâs just that you havenât really been talking as much to me lately. Because of the extra shifts Iâve been taking at the hospital lately, I know I havenât been spending as much time with you, and I feel bad about it, I really do, so I understand why youâd be mad-â
As he rambles on, you deadpan a little. He seems so tightly strung itâs almost comical. When he notices you sighing, he almost combusts.Â
âIâm really, really sorry (y/n). I promise Iâll make it up to you at a later time. Youâre so important to me, I donât want you to feel like Iâm taking you for granted-â He stops when you reach across the covers to cradle his face.
You lean in to kiss him, and heâs so confused that it takes him a moment to close his eyes.Â
His lips are a little chapped, but you donât mind, instead making a metal note to buy him a little watermelon lip smackers later, and yes-lip smackers because imagining professional Doctor Mark using lip smackers is hilarious to you.
When you pull away, youâre nose to nose, foreheads touching. Youâre both silent for a moment, a quiet understanding passing between you two.
âI love you so much,â he whispers.Â
A smile begins to spread across your face. You know you shouldnât tease him, but you do anyway.
âI know you do.â
âTell me you love me too,â he almost whines, and you canât help but stifle a laugh.Â
âDonât laugh, this is a serious matter,â he grumbles, wrapping his arms around your waist.
You give in, pecking him on the lips once more.
âYou silly, silly boy. Of course I love you too. You donât even need to ask.â
Mark closes his eyes, and when he mumbles something about not knowing what heâd do without you, your heart nearly melts.Â
You close your eyes too, and as you both slowly drift to sleep, you think about how life's going good despite itâs new changesâpandemic and all. You have Mark, and that is something that will never change.
Bonus
Mark scratches the back of his head, glances at you, the little neon green tube in his hand, and then back at you. All you do is just beam at him.
âAnd?â
âOf course I love it, but uh, isnât it a little girly?â he says sheepishly.Â
You pinch his ear playfully and he turns the slightest shade of pink.
âDonât disrespect the lip smackers, it comes highly recommended not to mention coveted among almost every teenage girl.â
âBut Iâm not a teenage girl,â he mumbles, and you spring into action, mustering the most disappointed face you can.
They should honestly give you a honorary degree in acting, because when Mark looks at you, he might as well act like you just told him your dog just died.
He uncaps the little stick and quickly applies it all over his lips, rather intensely. When he looks back up at you, he flashes you the most awkward smile and thumbs up youâve ever seen in your life. With his lips unusually pink and waxy from the over application, he looks like a clown, so what other choice do you have, but laugh.Â
Mark catches on pretty quickly, and kisses you in retaliation; he tastes like watermelon.
âYouâre an evil, evil girl,â he murmurs, âBut I love you anyway.â
âAll jokes aside, youâre going to actually use it right?â (you used your own hard earned money to get this for him, a whole two dollars and twenty five not including tax )
âOf course I will. I love everything you give me.â (You know this is a lie, he doesnât like it when you give him a smack on his butt.)

SnK Chapter 135 Poll Results
This monthâs poll closed with 2,264 entries. The poll results were compiled by momtaku, /u/_Puppet_, /u/berthototototo, u/staraves
RATE THE CHAPTER 1,980 responses
Volume 34 started off on a high note with âBattle of Heaven and Earthâ being our 7th highest rated chapter with an average of 4.61.
Easily the best action based chapter post timeskip
Very action dominated chapter this time. Just pure adrenaline, not many answers. Not complaining though, great chapter!
Best chapter since 122, hype levels were great, pacing was great, just overall great really.
What I loved about this chapter is that this was the first time I REALLY felt the suspense, the kind of suspense where it looks our heroes can not win the fight and all hope is lost. It was a very similar feeling I experienced in the first chapters of Attack on Titan where the fight against Pure Titans always felt like the enemy had the upper hand and our heroes were fighting a losing battle that they could only fight to mitigate the losses as low as possible
A chapter will less talk more fight. It's been a while.
I loved this chapter immensely. For months, this was the first I could finally rate the highest.
We are near the end, oh god, this was a a hell of a journey from 2013 as a manga reader it is for me one of the best manga I have ever read
Everything about this was awesome from bucket girl Ymir to all the previous titan shifters to bird Falco. There was so much I had to wrap my head around, so Iâm going to have to read this a couple more times.
So many mysteries I just donât want it to be rushes uwu and for us to only be getting a chapter per MONTH can you throw us some bones PLEASE
Iâm rethinking everything I thought I knew about the manga
We're hanging on a razor's edge between masterpiece and ruin. Whatever happens, please let it be well executed. . .
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING WAS YOUR FAVORITE OVERALL MOMENT?
2,001 responses
This chapter was filled with lore, action and great individual character moments but seeing the fantastical forms of titans past brought into the fight was our favorite moment with 31.4% of the total. âMikasa carrying the whole damn teamâ was second with 24.7%. The arrival of the flying titan (10.6%), the vision of Bertholt Hoover (10%) and Pieck rushing forward with the bombs (6.9%) round out the top five.
One of my all-time favourites probably, I absolutely loved all the character interactions as well as the amazing new titan designs.
Bert back! Bert back! Bert back!!! <333333
I really did like it, all those previous titans forms are interesting and see that the manga is very soon to end, I can't wait to know the end.
The chapter hasn't changed anything fundamentally but was exited to see OG Ymir
A demonstration of the despair and hopelessness of fighting Ymir
Bird!!! Falco!!! And!!! Ghost!!! Bertholdt!!! YES! YES! YES!
Really liked Jean and Reiners moments this chapter,
Bringing back old titans was really badass and intimidating.
Tentacle porn. That is all.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE COMRADE-RELATED MOMENT? 1,969 responses
With a battle involving Alliance teamwork and some visits from old friends, this chapter had many moments between current and former comrades. The wholesome scene between Jean and Reiner packed with an Armored Titan joke garnered the majority of votes (50.2%), with others favoring Arminâs vision of Bertolt (15.9%), and Annieâs reunion at the end of the chapter (14.1%).
jean saving reiner really moved me i really love these characters and after seeing them fighting it was nice seeing one saving the other. i mean jean had a really good reason to hate reiner and he previously said that he would never forgive him but he did and it was nice
Loved that scene between Jean and Reiner. Jean came a long way since his selfish oppotunistic days: Not letting Reiner fall, even though he really hated him. Actually willing to die. Great character development.
I'm curious to see, what effect this might have on Reiner: I mean he was being called a member of the survey corps again and therefore he was kind of being ""forgiven"".
Jean-Reiner-Bromance!
Connie x Levi canon
Ngl, I felt a great satisfaction as ghost Bertolt looked down on Armin who was suffocating from that giant tongue lmao
at this point I think that the ackertalk is sadly never happening. A missed opportunity.
WHO WAS THIS CHAPTERâS MVP? 1,973 responses
Itâs Mikasa nation domination with 52.4% of the vote. There were a lot of great character moments but itâs hard to beat the one who stopped the manga ending prematurely! There was also appreciation for Ymir (12.8%) who brought in some interesting Titan designs and a great fight. 11.8% gave the nod to Falco for swooping in for the last minute save. 6.3% were hyped for Pieckâs no-nonsense charge, and 4.1% liked seeing Levi push himself in battle despite needing another couple of months in bed.
Levi has been severely injured for not even a week, yet he held his own and saved Connie AND Jean. I don't ever want to hear any whiny criticisms about this man ever again.
If Pieck dies we riot
Jean is best
Love Mikasa sm
MIKASA SUPREMACYYY GO BEST GIRL
Loved Reiner and Jean moment as well as Mikasaâs bad assery!
Mikasa was amazing this chapter
Pieck, the only one to make a move against Eren directly while the rest are too much up in their feelings. Best girl moment right there <3
Mikasa was so badass!! Love to see it
Mikasa was the BOMB in this chapter, loved that winged panel of hers.
My God I loved it, Mikasa was so badass, especially in that speech scene with her wings, Falco is best boy, I loved the interactions and everyone saving each other
THE CHAPTER IS TITLED âBATTLE OF HEAVEN AND EARTHâ, WHAT DOES THIS REFER TO? 1,942 responses
The most popular interpretation of the title âBattle of Heaven and Earthâ seems to be designating Ymir as the Heaven, and the Alliance as the Earth (42.6%), with the reverse of that being the second most popular (27.8%). In third came the idea that it relates to Ymir using the titans of deceased Eldians (20.9%).
A battle that people might die in (Heaven) or survive (Earth)
A battle which has consequences for both Heaven (Paths) and Earth (The World)
The alliance fighting in the heavens while the colossal titans destroy the earth.
It is a reference to Ragnarok.
multiple viable interpretations. the ascended vs descended, the heavenly winged mikasa vs the now devil of all earth ymir, the winged titan against the earthly titans.
Probably a weird take, but it reminds me 131. Eren being in the Heaven as his coping mechanism and Ymir being on the ground (earth)
Iâm not sure but itâs in reference to the 4th chapter titled First Battle. Just like last chapter referenced the 5th chapter.
Heaven: Paradis. Earth: beyond the sea.
all of the above- YOU GET SYMBOLIC METAPHORS, AND YOU GET SYMBOLIC METAPHORS
because the battles are in the sky while on earth the colosus step down on earth
***ohhh heaven is a place on earth***
WEâD PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT YMIR WAS UNJUSTIFIABLY FRAMED BY HER PEERS. DOES LEARNING THAT SHE FREED THE PIGS AFFECT HOW YOU VIEW HER? 1,952 responses
Ymir apparently freeing the pigs was an unexpected opening for the chapter. For 34.4% Â this action meant that Ymir has always been #TeamFreedom. A sizable 18.8% think this relatively minor reveal makes her way more suspicious. Closely following that, 18% think it means nothing at all. Itâs just a cool detail that resolved a mystery.
It's trying to say that since Ymir freed the pigs, she created this whole mess which I heavily dislike since it goes against what her character was in 122
When back in 122 everyone was foaming about tHe FuCkInG pIgS, I was rolling my eyes so hard, because to me the pigs were insignificant: it does not matter who set them free, they might have just run away on their own, what matters is that Ymir is the one they blame, which started the whole story. NOW, huh, the pigs might be important, or at least it really might have been Ymir who let them go, set them free. She couldn't get free herself, so she granted freedom to the poor animals.
I always just assumed Ymir set the pigs free, I didn't realize it was something people saw as ambiguous until nowâŠ
I wasn't expecting any of that sh*t, and now I'm certain that Ymir is the real baddie here
Peppa Pig is free
WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN YMIR FREEING THE PIGS AND LOOKING DOWN AT THE ALLIANCE? 1,835 responses
The chapter opens with Ymir after freeing the pigs from the pen, but what does this mean? Itâs close, but the most popular option is that Ymir is recalling that the last time she prioritised the idea of freedom the suffering was not worth it (29.9%), followed by the assertion thereâs no deeper meaning (22.3%). A close third place of votes believe the connection is that Ymir has given up acts of selflessness as she doubles down on the rumbling (21.8%) and an even closer fourth place see it as her looking down on the Alliance as if they were the caged animals (21.4%).
Did she free the pigs out of compassion, or to spite her master? Is the rumbling everything to put the pigs back in the pen, or to get revenge on those who scorned Eldians?
How it started versus where it's ended up. All this torment and death because of something so minuscule because of human cruelty towards each other.
It seems like a parallel between Ymir freeing the pigs and Ymir freeing the past titans.
It shows she's an actor with agency and motivations, whether in her slave-like state or her god-like position
It was her first act of free will, and her routing the scouts it technically her third, so in a way they are parallel actions.
She looks at humans like pigs
She wants freedom, and the only way to obtain it is to kill the alliance
She's still in a cage, represented by the bones of Eren
She has been stewing in everything she has gone through for 2000 years and that might've turned her hateful.
it is possible that after looking at humanity for hundreds of years that she believes that it is not human's nature to be compassionate like her, but to fight each other until no one remains, and she has decided to speed up to what she feels is the inevitable conclusion so that her ghost can be gone for good.
WHY IS YMIR THE ONE ACTIVELY FIGHTING BACK AGAINST THE ALLIANCE? 1,919 responses
Armin notes that Ymir seems to be the one in control of the titans, why is this?  The large majority at 54.5% believe her to be working side by side with Eren.  About ÂŒ, at 24.8% think sheâs stepping in for Eren while sheâs unconscious, while the minority at 20.7% think sheâs overpowered Eren and is the real big bad of the story.
If she really wants the whole humanity to perish, then it means she lost all hope in humanity and is like an empty shell who has never experienced any drop of love. I feel that Ymir doesn't really care about protecting or helping Eren. She just wants to see an empty world - without humans.
The chapter was really well drawn. Also I see lots of new possibilities to happen, as Eren being a slave, Ymir perhaps becoming the final villain. it also makes to recall back to chapter 1 when I see Eren crying in front of Mikasa after some sort of "dream". This makes me think that Eren will eventually come to regret his actions but it's gonna be too late. thus he receives this dream but he is never able to see it through. Quite a sad fate. Although that's just a speculation on my part.
Armin questioning Ymir's role has me hoping for an Armin talk no jutsu with Ymir.
Eren and Ymir are unbeatable
Ymir/Eren are the only ones who can build titans right now. They baited Falco and Annie to return to get all of the 9 shifters near the founder again and they are planning something.
It warmed my heart seeing Ymir protecting her otosan as a thank you for bringing her with him on Take Your Daughters to Work Day đ„ș
WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION TO ARMIN BEING FRENCHED BY A TITAN? 1,957 responses
In one of the weirdest moments in recent memory, Armin gets french kissed by a titan of the past. Â 42% of fans think it makes sense, as it was the only way to stop him from biting himself to transform. Â 36.1% feel bad for Armin as heâs gotten molested and now this, he just canât catch a break. Â 14.2% are scared to ask if this constitutes fanservice, and 7.8% are too grossed out to think about it any longer.
When I wanted a non-Annie pairing for Armin, I wasn't expecting this. Stop harrassing my poor boy.
the chapter has already spawned Armin tentacle hentai and that makes it the best chapter in the whole manga
Armin capture thing was a little weird but makes sense IMO.
I know Armin being captured in that way has a narrative purpose, but that was disturbing in the end and i hate people will/ and are joking about it.
It didn't cross my mind that the frenching was to prevent Armin from transforming until I saw the vote option. Thank you.
WILL THE CANNONS AT FORT SALTA DO BETTER OR WORSE THAN THE BLIMPS? 1,920 responses
Fort Saltaâs own forces donât seem very effective as of yet, with the blimps almost completely failing, and now they turn to three cannons. Â Not a single respondent thinks theyâll do anything (Not that we gave them the option), though more think theyâll do nothing in red.
Them cannons, it will be effective.
Theyâll get hit by the fortâs cannons but they probably wonât be very effective
KARINA SAW THE ARMORED TITAN GET CHOMPED IN FRONT OF HER VERY EYES. HOW WILL THIS AFFECT HER? 1,924 responses
Even though the Plot-Armored Titan escaped death yet again, all Karina saw was her sonâs flesh mecha being chomped from afar. 37.3% are finding it hard to care about Karinaâs struggle, but of the ones who did have an answer, 31.2% think the purpose of the death fake-out is so she can better appreciate when Reiner is alive and well later. Just under a fifth at 19.3% think sheâll do something rash while thinking her son is dead, unsurprisingly more than the 12.2% who think Karina would do something nice for once.
fuck karina
reiner always manages to escape death
JEAN POINTS OUT THAT THE SPAWNING TITANS ARE NOT MINDLESS. WHAT IS THEIR TRUE NATURE? 1,933 responses
It was a close one, but a plurality of respondents (38.1%) thought that the shifters brought forth by Ymir were the real deal, their souls controlled in death. Or their spirits? Their essences? Their⊠PATHS GHOSTS? Slightly fewer respondents (36.8%) think theyâre just empty clones, Ymir simply not bothering with creating new forms since that would probably take a fuckton more years. 23.7% are somewhere between the two other options â maybe these shifters arenât really present, but some of their will remains.
The fact that Armin saw Bertolt tells me that a part of the titan's "souls" still exist within them and they're being forced to do Ymir's bidding
The founding titan powers give her complete control over sentient shifters, and the attack titan powers (utilized by the founding titan) lets Ymir reach back in time and utilize the shifter's "essence" (maybe they all had a weird dream they don't remember), and obviously the warhammer titan is what allows them to take form. Beast titan go brrrrr
I have a small theory about souls of past shifters being imprisoned in some paths area or insubconscious mind of current titan shifters.
Iâm conflicted between the two first answers but I hope there empty clones
At first, I thought it would be like Zeke's titans in Ragako (the anime showed their weird coordinated dance). But looking at Bertholdt, it seems they're not acting on free will but are still a bit conscious.
If you chomp one, do you get its power?
They are empty vessel's resurrected the only reason Armin saw Bertolt was becuase armin was the holder of the collosal titan! In my opinion of course
They are ghost/ spirits of the past shifter, which have a limited consciousness like zombies
They are moving according to the old users skills, like a saved âdataâ
They are the ones who volunteered to be in the walls when the Eldians escaped to Paradis. They sympathise with Eren and are fighting for him.
They are the real shifters working with Ymir
We see Bert crying right before we see his titan try to eat Reiner ââ maybe heâs being forces by Ymir.
The souls of the previous titan holders can see what is happening though paths but they don't have control over it
Ymir created them via the shifters' own memories respectively. The Beetholdt panel might show hesitation of wanting to grab Reiner for example and emphasizes on the theme of Slavery. How to achieve freedom you must steal freedom (Erwn said he stole the world's freedom to achieve his own) or enslave/oppress someone or a group.
Ymir created them while eren is using them
souls being completely controlled but can be revoked original consciousness back, cringe naruto shit.
Through PATHS all is possible
ISAYAMA WENT ALL OUT WITH TITAN DESIGNS. WHICH ANCIENT TITANS DID YOU MOST ENJOY SEEING? 1,926 responses
The most popular design in Isayamaâs titan showcase by a decent margin was the âFaceless Titanâ (45.8%), with âThe Thing Titanâ coming in second (34.4%). In third was the âMinotaur Titanâ (32.4%) and narrowly in fourth, the âMummified Titanâ (31.3%). Interestingly, 2/4 of the top designs appear to be previous Warhammer Titans, which is fitting with it being one of the most popular titan designs. Well, except for the one we saw in Ymirâs backstory that had hair. We all agreed that thing was atrocious.
I loved the previous titan shifters.
croco titan best boi
There's a lot of titans missing, so I'll say here that I love the dinosaur titan, the bearded titan and the ghost-like titan as well.
that 'wolverine' titan is actually a deer. It kind of blends in with Reiner's armor but you can see the antlers if you look closely.
always wanted to see ancient titan designs since learning about the inheritance and such, so this is a dream come true for a fanartist
Previously, it was left to our imagination what all these past Titan Shifters looked like, but thanks to this chapter (through the power of PATHS!), we got to see many of them for ourselves. A nice treat from Isayama, but also a mind-blowing one, especially with how they intervened in the fight.
Seeing all these past Titan Shifters appear like that was so interesting to me that it  made me analyze each one and try to identify which was an old Jaw Titan, an old Beast Titan, an old Cart Titan, an old Warhammer Titan, and so on, so this chapter also felt like a fun guessing game in that regard!
Adding animals to the mix just feels like a try hard to make them scary. If he wanted them to have some real crazy powers it could've been done better imo, having these many animals just thrown around didn't make sense to me, we already got the beast titan and that bird titan. It's enough animals for me, especially since initially what made titans so scary in the first place was how identical they are to humans, only differing in their mounstrous size.
I never liked the idea of animal titans, it just feels so weird and out of place with no explanation for why or how they are animal-like. That being said, some of the other titan designs were pretty rad.
Show us Kruger's titan though
WHICH RETURNING TITAN DID YOU MOST ENJOY SEEING? 1,925 responses
In a chapter filled with new titans of the past we also saw some classic designs. By far the most hype-inducing one among fans was the Colossal Titan at 66.6%, followed by the War Hammer at 19.6%, Porcoâs Jaw at 12.2%, and Marcelâs Jaw at 1.5%.
I loved how the one, true and only OG Colossal Titan of Bertholdt descended upon them like a fucking God
since there was no ""Other"" option in the ""favourite moment"" question, I'll say it here: Marcel's titan was my favourite moment.
Last chapter I was wondering if there'll be "another Beast Titan clone". We end up getting the entire museum lmao
The Colossal Titan, the God of the SnK world, appeared as the judge (while aldo not being himself, ironically) seriously, it was amazing
The Colossal Titan's entrance was like sweet karma, after how the SC murdered Bertold brutally and never cared one bit, they still couldn't get rid of him. SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKERS kekekek
THEREâS BEEN SOME DEBATE BUT IT SEEMS FRECKLED YMIR WASNâT THERE. IS THIS SIGNIFICANT? 1,900 responses
Ah, the innocent days of our freckled goddess⊠she may have turned out to be a regular girl, but where was she when our other old friends were running around? There were a couple of Titans who looked a bit like her, but none with both her little gremlin body and her distinctive nose and teeth. Does it matter? 63.8% of you donât think thereâs anything to it. Maybe sheâll be in the next chapter, or maybe Yams forgot her⊠maybe sheâs chilling with Grisha and Kruger. 36.2% think there could be something more to her absence so far.
i hope freckled ymir came back  àŒàș¶âżàŒàș¶
I think it's highkey sus that we didn't see freckled Ymir's titan and that really gives me hope that Historia really will have an important part in the finale since it feels like Yams is saving freckled Ymir for a Historia moment
about freckles... i think her titan was the one that was gonna try and eat reiner/jean. dark hair, thin arms, small facial features.
I feel like her foreground omission isn't a big deal, since we're already two Jaws in, both of whom have more impactful connections to those present.
I want freckled Ymir back
ymir freckles did make an appearance, wasnât she the titan attacking reiner as he was holding onto jean that mikasa slashed?
I believe Freckeld Ymir's Jaw Titan is shown when Bertholdt's Colossal Titan attempts to eat Reiner. It's very small though so it's hardly noticeable and I can't even confirm that it was indeed her Titan but it seemed like it.
YOU GAVE ME HOPE ABOUT FRECKLED YMIR DAMN YOU and thank you
SINCE ALL THE TITAN OTHER SHIFTERS SUMMONED THIS CHAPTER WERE DECEASED, DOES THIS MEAN ZEKE IS DEAD? 1,953 responses
Ymir summoned titans of the past according to Pieck, does that mean Zeke is of the past now too? Â The fandom is overall undecided on this one, as about half donât know, at 48.5%. Â 32.7% are confident Zeke is still around, and 18.8% take this as confirmation of his death.
Zeke may not be dead, because the beast titan summoned last chapter could be Xavier's beast titan too. Because in one earlier Marley arc chapter, someone mentioned that "The beast titan is the same as ever". Meaning, Xavier's beast titan was also monke.
IF Zeke is alive, it means that Pieck is once again somehow "faking" her defeat and goes for the detonator but then she somehow runs into Zeke. They have a lot of history and too much stuff unresolved between them and because of eren/armin and zeke/pieck dynamics is that those 2 stayed on the founding titan..
I think Zeke and Bertolt are both stuck in paths, unable to properly die. I hope Zeke is just shackled making titans like we saw him in 120. That would be poetic, for the one who hates his Eldian blood so much to be forced to enact the one thing that made him hate himself (the existence of titans).
I just realized that in the last chapter I thought Zeke was there but it was the shot of the Marleyan general saying ""I am sorry""... I was writing about how Zeke cannot be dead, what are you all talking about, he is right there, then went and checked 134. Now I'm just sitting here with no answers at all. Zeke could be anywhere, alive or dead, no clue...
CHEKHOVâS EXPLOSIVES CONTINUE, AND THIS CHAPTER PIECK ENSURED THEY WERE RIGHT NEXT TO EREN. WHO WILL DETONATE THEM? WILL THEY BE EFFECTIVE? 1,121 responses
We asked what you think would come of the explosives that have been built up for eight chapters now, and collated your responses. First, who will detonate them?
Pieck: 182
Mikasa: 140
Armin: 134
Reiner: 99
Gabi: 81
Levi: 71
Connie: 38
Jean: 29
Annie: 23
Falco: 14
Eren: 6
Ymir: 2
Zeke/Onyankopon/Bertholdt: 1
There were also 7 mentions of the cannons that the Marleyans got ready to use this chapter actually coming in handy, and setting off the explosives. Itâs also noteworthy that Pieck is thought of more than any other character to be likely to sacrifice her life to get it done. Additionally, many people who put forth Armin detonating them suggested this occurs through his titan transformation igniting them, not just him using the detonator.
In terms of success, 255 said that the explosives would either do nothing or overall be ineffective, with the most commonly given reason being that Eren is not in the nape. 250 said that the explosives will be helpful one way or another, including 7 who said they would end Erenâs life (Most of these involved Mikasa as the detonator). 9 people specified that they hope the bombs donât do anything, 25 said nobody will detonate them at all, and 2 said it will be effective but will make things worse.
They will play an important role in the Climax, one way or another
warhammer can just throw the explosive after it deals with pieck
His neck is covered with more bones and the blimps didn't hurt them, but the explosives are as close as possible, so I think maybe they could work.
100% those explosives will be used in one way or an other, but i have a feeling that eren is not even there ;)
Annie will likely be able to get close to Pieck, as her titan is very agile and will activate the explosives that will be able to get Eren out of her giant's head
Could be anyone. The way they're set up, they must have some effect.
Could be Jean or Connie and maybe the rumbling will be paused or the Eren's skeleton will collapse as the story continues..
Connie and he will die doing so, doing few damage but someone will be like "hey he gave us a weakness we can exploit"
if they are effective, mikasa but if they arent it will be connie or jean
Doesnât matter who detonates them it wonât be effective
Eren better pull a Reiner and transfer his consciousness. Isayama introduced that shit on purpose. Peick probably playing dead and will try to detonate to no avail.
Gabi is going to detonate them and save Pieck too. The explosion might help in the fight, but I doubt Eren is in the neck, my bet its Zeke who is in there.
Eren, once all the shifters are dead he will detonate it killing himself and ensuring all titans are reborn in Historias baby, truly freeing ymir and ending the curse of the titans.
Fort Salta Cannons will detonate them. They wont be effective because Eren is hiding in Paradis with the Warhammer Titan power (or he can transfer his consciousness to the rest of his spine in case he really is there).
Levi will detonate them to kill Zeke who is actually the one in the nape
Levi will give up on his dream of killing Zeke and die sacrificing himself to detonate it
Pieck will sacrifice herself to detonate the fuse and when she does she will fall to her doom. She will be content in knowing that it will work. She lits it up and falls at the same time. When shes falling she feels a great sense of acceptance, but all of a sudden Falco swoops in to save her with everyone on his back. As they watch it blow up the body keeps moving for eren was not there to begin with.
I think Ymir will use them against the alliance
Oyankopon drops a flying knee into the plunger in an act of self-sacrifice.
titanfolk: Kaboom?
Isayama: Yes titanfolk, kaboom.
WHY IS ARMIN HAVING THE VISION OF BERTOLT? 1,928 responses
In one of the more confusing panels of this crazy chapter, we see Bertolt standing over Armin. Â 39.6% believe it to be a fragment of Berthold brought back through the Colossal Ymir summoned, 25.5% think Bertoto has awareness in an afterlife, 25.1% think Armin is having a memory from his predecessor Burrito, and 7.3% think Ymir is just messing with Armin.
Grabbing Armin allowed Ymir to access Bertolt's titan, similar to how they have Zeke captive for his Beast titan
It's some kind of twist that's coming related to the whole predecessor memory stuff.
Some kind of PTSD vision brought on by being put in a Titans mouth
Since this was an ongoing issue how Armin didn't seem to have access to Berth's memories, he'll probably will see some of them soon. And especially the one, where Eren says to Levi that Armin will save humanity, not him. That will give him the last push to do whatever.
The scene with Bertholdt was a direct recall of when Armin woke up after eating him, and seeing him crying in the form of the Colossal Titan's skull and saying "it hurts" in chapter 85. My poor boy :( He was probably suffering from eternal torment in an afterlife/paths related place. Shifters' Hell would be a good word, as Ymir Fritz kinda had the same experience being enslaved for eternity
Him seeing Bertolt for the second time makes me think these two are going to switch places at some point. That being said it's not the end-end for Armin, and Eren is definitely reserving him a seat in whatever path underground there is.
I thought Armin was feeling the despair/hopelessness that Bertolt did while the warriors were undercover in Paradis. The paralyzing dread of the task before him, even though he is the "strongest titan"
Bertolt's individual "soul" still exists as a singular entity, that lives within Paths. Armin as his inheritor has a soul-link to him, can see him, recall his memories and even feel some of his feelings. However his presence here will serve for Armin to make some kind of realisation that will help conclude the battle.
YOUR THOUGHTS ON MIKASA IN THIS CHAPTER? 1,942 responses
We knew Mikasa would likely be chapter MVP but we wanted to give her an extra shoutout for a great chapter. Only 9.1% percent refused to play along. A majority of nearly 60% agreed with all our gushing about her performance, selecting all of the above. Of the individual entries, âBless those ackergenesâ (10.2%), âThey were goners without herâ (8.8%) and âShe was unbelievableâ (7.9%) were top selections.
Isayama in November said mikasa character is coming and this chapter felt like the start of it and hoo was this Mikasa's chapter. We have known that Mikasa is one of three main MCs, and isayama had been foreshadowing Mikasa's role in the finale so much. I'm excited to read the final 3 chapters.
goat mikasaaaa
HEAD EMPTY JUST MIKASA SUPREMACy
I LOVE MIKASA
Loving all the Mikasa scenes. Itâs about damn time,
Mikasa going "Fuck it. Fight me. All of you, I don't care if you're shifter clones, I'll kick your ass." was a great bit of dark humour and a really well done character beat. If she has to go down she'll go down fighting with pride.
THIS CHAPTER MIKASA FOUGHT TO THE END AFTER LEVI DELEGATED THE ATTACKING ROLE TO HER, A REVERSAL FROM FEMALE TITAN ARC. IS MIKASA HUMANITY'S NEW STRONGEST SOLDIER? 1,940 responses
Levi has always been humanityâs strongest soldier, but this chapter had Mikasa being the only one fighting till the end. This being temporary due to Leviâs worn down body is the consensus, with 49.3% affirming its brief nature while 34.3% venture that Mikasa will one day take on this mantle permanently.13.8% believe she has surpassed even what a healed Levi would be capable of, and 2.7% do not think sheâs surpassed him in any way.
Iâm glad to see a lot more female empowerment with Mikasa being a major hit in this chapter. I got very worried with the amount of saving Levi had to go through and avoiding near deaths at some points.
Let the Humanityâs Strongest go down like a badass heâs always been, stop making him this pitiful please
LEVI NEEDS IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION HE MIGHT BE HAVING INTERNAL BLEEDING FROM THAT EXPLOSION AND HIS LEG BEING BITTEN MAKES IT EVEN WORSE FUCK
I BELIEVE IN LEVI'S SUPREMACY
Mikasa Ackerman supremacy
that wings really said mikasa is the most freest person now
Iâd love it if isayama would stop crippling Levi. I know its to get him out of the fight but cmon
NOW THAT WE SEE IT IN ACTION, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF FALCOâS BIRD TITAN? 1,944 responses
Most fans are behind this controversial development at this point, with 46.8% loving it, and 29.3% not loving it but feeling that it fits in the chapter. 17.4% have changed their mind from negative to positive after seeing it in this chapter, and 6.5% will always hate this.
Falco's titan is amazing. He saved everyone and it's his second transformation, he is goat.
I liked Falco saving the day :) It doesn't matter to me how he learnt to fly and control his titan so fast. Maybe Zeke helped him via sending visions? Or maybe Falco is talented? I don't know and I think we have more important thing to read about
Falco Being able to fly a few hours after Hange's death makes this chapter less good.
The Flying Titan is questionable but everything else are great
the design of Bird Titan is kinda cringe
Porco must be very proud of his sonÂ
KIYOMI AND YELENA ARE NOT ON THE FLYING TITAN, ALONG WITH THE AZUMABITO ENGINEERS. ANY PREDICTIONS? 1,911 responses
After Kiyomi forebodingly accepted the risk of the ship sinking that also contained Yelena and the Azumabito engineers two chapters ago, she has not been seen since despite Falco now arriving. The majority of you (70.2%) believe theyâre fine, with the ship surviving Falcoâs transformation, while just under a quarter (23.2%) believing both drowned on the sinking ship, and a slim minority (6.6%) believe they are with our main crew on the Flying Titan.
Yelena better be okay
I wonder where is yelena
I just want to learn how the rest of the Azumabito family are doing after Falco transformed into the Titan.
ISAYAMAâS DONE IT AGAIN! WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE THROWBACK THIS CHAPTER? 1,936 responses
Isayama loves himself some throwbacks and this chapter was no exception. Â Mikasa giving a speech reminiscent of her Trost speech was the most popular option at 32.9%, with Armin dreaming of Bertolt crying similar to his dream of the Colossal Titan was a close second at 28.2%. Â Rounding out the top three was Falco taking a bird form in parallel with the Fort Slava scene we just saw in the anime.
It was like going back to Trost arc amazing wise... It was really a good one full of quotes from previous memorable moments of the series, while reading it i thought "wow, it really is ending
I think it significantly has to do with his memory of the colossal crying after RtS so perhaps it's a near death state experience of his predecessor for Armin
I'm also interested to see what Armin is going to do next. He seems to think back to Erwin whenever he gets himself into a pickle. I'm excited to see how he will use his titan in this battle.
Based on the parallels with Trost the only bomb that's blowing Eren out of his titan is Armin's Colossal Titan.
DO YOU AGREE WITH ANY OF THESE CRITICISMS ABOUT THE CHAPTER? 1,428 responses
No chapter is free from criticism, so we scoured discord, twitter and reddit looking for the most common complaints. The lack of character deaths seemed to be on many minds. âThere was too much plot armorâ and âEren and OG Ymir are too OPâ were the two options that got over 30%. Grumblings about the flying titan (26.1%) and Mikasa with a winged background (23.9%) Â were also common selections. I think whatâs most telling is that â
of respondents skipped this question entirely indicating that they had no major complaints at all
Everything was going 10/10 until the flying titan came and saved everyone. Another chapter with 0 deaths this late in the story.
I really love that mikasa with wings so much. It means for me she's the hope of humanity.she's ackerman so ymir can't control her... she will have a big roll at the end!
Being able to recreate old Titans is too OP
not too sold on the whole spawning in Titans and a flying bird that just recently got their power swooping in to save everyone
I'm completely sold on the idea of past shifters being summoned. Some people may say it's quite an asspull, but honestly, I've had a little problem with this series, which is that the Coordinate has been teased as the power of God itself but we've never seen that in action, so I'm satisfied. I'm not a big fan of the flying titan (teasing things is not the same as justifiying things) and the lack of character deaths made me think Hanji could have died this chapter, which would've been more meaningful honestly. Still, I'm very happy to say Isayama has surprised me once again.
WAYYYYYYYYYY TOO MUCH PLOT ARMOR
I know people are getting stomped on right now, but was expecting at least someone to die.
I don't mind the flying titan, but I would've liked just another hint that the beast titan can be any animal. The very first one in Ymir's flashback was an ape, could've been a dinosaur or something!
You never wanted to accept that this series was a shounen manga aimed at little boys, did you?
DOES THIS CHAPTER ADD EVIDENCE TO THE THEORY THAT HANGEâS VISION WAS REAL? 1,929 responses
On the poll team, our first step in preparing results is looking for spam. We identify that primarily by looking at timestamps and bursts of entries that choose to answer only a single question in rapid succession. Typically we see this behavior on shippy questions and those involving Gabi, so itâs been puzzling that in the last year the only questions to get significant spam are those involving Hangeâs vision. Clearly someone, or maybe a few someones, are very afraid of ghosts.
With the spam entries removed, the Yesâs outweighed the Noâs by 54-46 percent on the question of whether or not this chapter added evidence to the theory that Hangeâs vision was real.
The ghosts of Eldians past are definitely going to feature in the endgame I think. The shifters are the most important but Hange's vision makes it clear that they're all "alive" in Paths somehow. Let freckled Ymir talk to Historia once more!!
I hate conscious development
I bet Hanji is screaming in the afterlife, wanting to be on top of Falco's titan
HAS THE FOCUS ON BIRDS IN THE ANIME OP/ED ADDED EVIDENCE THAT THE BIRDS IN PREVIOUS CHAPTERS ARE SIGNIFICANT? 1,913 responses
Bird theory (/birds being significant in some large way) has been gaining traction recently in the manga already, and then the anime made a whole ED theme about them and had them in focus in the OP as well. Â In one of the most one sided poll results in recent memory, almost 90% of the fandom feels this is evidence of birds being significant, while 10.7% say no.

ISAYAMA RECENTLY ESTIMATED THERE IS 1-2% LEFT OF THE STORY. WHAT CHAPTER DO YOU THINK THE MANGA WILL END AT? 1,941 responses
I donât know why Isayama does it, but he keeps assuring us the end is near. But weâve guessed the end is near since⊠oh, RTS? Then Marley? Then when the Rumbling started? Remember when chapter 130 was the max? Donât worry, the ride will end someday. 35.5% think chapter 139 will be the last, giving the final volume five chapters. 33% are sticking with 138, the classic four chapter volume. 28.7% think weâre strapped in for a little longer at 140+ chapters. 2.5% think weâre wrapping up in just two chapters. And 6 respondents think the next chapter is the last! Gonna guess youâre either hoping for Falco to crash into a tree or youâre just tired of this ride. (Sorry, the ride never ends.)
I'm worried about the pacing. While I was glad to have a glimpse of Bert (and Erwin) again, his appearance is long overdue. Along with a whole bag of other characters who need resolutions. I don't know how Isayama will delegate worthwhile endings to this huge cast and themes in 3-4 chapters.
Each chapter makes me feel there's 3 chapters left (and there has passed more than 3 chapters since I thought that for the first time xd)
Another amazing chapter. I see the story ending at Chapter 139. Three more chapters of action, deaths and twists, and one more epilogue chapter.
There's apparently not much of the series left but this chapter still doesn't feel like we're that near the end :/
I was expecting a lot of people to die this time around, but I guess that'll happen later considering we seem to have one more volume left after this one. That actually raises my hopes a bit on the ending not being as rushed as we were afraid it would be. And the return of the anime on top of that? Man, I'm not ready to say goodbye. :(
I'm worried if Isayama will be able to end every character arc. I mean, we're left with 1 or 2% of manga and there is this quite a lot of things to end. I just hope ending won't be rushed.
...it just added a lot of questions like Yams has to give us 5 chapters for the last volume at this point lol.
dunno how this ends with everyone being satisfied. Estimating that 3 chapters are left we need a conclusion to Reiner, Mikasa and the promised Eren and Armin confrontation. While there's mysteries like Zeke's whereabouts, what's going on w Historia, why can ymir manifest herself in the real world, what did eren mean by saying "you haven't gotten to the part where I eat our old man", Bertholdt shard of him getting spared by Dina and Mikasa's see you later scene. Not to mention an epilogue where if alliance wins we get to see how the world treats the eldians now. Im already losing faith that minor characters might be just cannon fodder and I find myself saying "Its Isayama. one chapter where it feels nothing happened doesn't meant we're getting a rushed ending" too often these days.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST HOPING TO SEE NEXT CHAPTER? 1,960 responses
It feels like thereâs a lot to accomplish with so few chapters remaining. While Erenâs POV is still top on our wishlist (29%), âI donât care just resolve a mystery, any of themâ was the number two (19%). The third most common response was for Armin to come up with a plan (14%). Historia, Zeke and the more specific options all scored in single digits.
We need answers. NOW.
I liked this chapter but Iâm getting tired of the mystery. Weâve been lead on for too long and thereâs too many loose ends that need to be tied up already.
can we get erenâs pov now
Yes ! More Bertholdt please !!! I missed my big sweaty boy !
Whereâs Freckled Ymir!!????!?!???!! Is Pieck okay!?!?!!!?!!
When will Levi die lol
Where armin
What happened to Armin!?? And does peick survive?
WHERE IS MONKE?!
Where the hell is eren?
I hope I can see Eren again
i hope isayama let levi kill zeke before he died , i want him to reunite with erwin and proudly tell him that he accomplish the mission
I just hope that Pieck and Armin are okay :((
i just want armin to be okay
I just want Eren/Mikasa, not all this shit(((
I just want to see Bertolt in the next chapter too
Wonder what is going on inside Ymir's head. Would also love to see Paradis' reaction to the ongoing massacre (if I didn't miss it somehow)
WHERE DO YOU PRIMARILY DISCUSS THE SERIES? 1,811 responses
While Reddit has historically stayed consistent, itâs been incredible to see the rise of Twitter and the fall of Tumblr as a dominant fandom platform. A year ago only 8% selected Twitter as their primary place for Attack on Titan discussion now that number is nearing 50%. Â Last month it became the most selected platform, surpassing Reddit, and this month proves it was no fluke.
wish i had irl friends who read the manga oof

10/10 again !!! Isayama knows what heâs doing and I trust him with the endingâ€ïž
2/10
GOOD chapter, definitely some eclipse vibes lol, Armin seemed to have realized Ymir is the one with the power and that they'll have to deal with her sooner or later to stop the rumbling. Next step is realizing Eren is 100% ready to kill him if he needs to. Maybe they'll stop trying to kill poor Zook for no reason now at least.
I loved seeing the alliance get there asses clapped
I hope Eren Yeager doesnât love anyone from âAttack on Titanâ.
But it's weird, I thought best Ymir was in the chapter too? She owes us so much, even more if SnK's afterlife is canon (Hange couldn't have known of Keith's death otherwise). And technically, Zeke could be dead like the others. First I was so bored by his constant plot armor but now...
The titan designs were got tier. Isayama came in clutch with these designs
There are still a lot of mysteries unsolved about the Titans and Eren's whereabouts is unknown. Would love to know more about the Ackerman blood too.
This poll is biased for not including statements against Mikasa and the Alliance.
If ymir creates the bodies of titan shifters, why did she give falco a bird form if she wants to stop them? Not saying it's a plot hole yet, but I hope there's a reason for it.
The title reminds me of the chinese saying of â怩äșșäș€æ°â which literally translates as battle between the heaven and human but means ones inner struggle. Maybe it is referring to erenâs inner struggle of wanting freedom and having to kill everything standing between him and freedom. Idk.
A lot of people have been trying to make sense why we're learning about Ymir freeing the pigs here of all places, but rather than it being evidence that she's some evil mastermind I think it's a representation of how devastating this cycle of hatred has been. In that first scene we see Ymir as a kind and empathetic girl who decides that though she can't free herself, she can still help these simple animals who she saw earlier also wanted to escape. But in the present, after suffering greatly for her kindness and being forced into servitude that lasted for countless years and even into death, we see Ymir not just as willing to commit a brutal omnicide on the rest of the world but as someone who is seemingly enslaving others in the pursuit of that goal - in many ways, she might be repeating the same crimes that were done to her by King Fritz.
After seeing the first episode of the new anime season and how well Mappa delivered on that, I cannot *wait* to see the crazy battle action of this chapter animated.
Armin, as expected, ended up a failure yet again. This is what Bertholdt, Erwin and Hange died for -_-
GIVE đ ARMIN đ A đGODDAMN đ BREAK
Armin is beginning to understand this always was about Ymir. After seeing her twice.
I really wish Armin could do something besides being tortured with doubt and getting captured. Â
BERT IS BACK BERT IS BACK BERT IS BACK BERT IS BACK BERT IS BACK BERT IS BACK BERT IS BACK BERT IS BACK BERT IS BACK BERT IS BACK BERT IS BACK BERT IS BACK
can levi die already let this old man reunite with his homies in shingeki no heaven. at this point death is like the only peace and/or freedom anyone can get in this series which is kind of a shitty message
I'm a fan of how fucking OP Eren and Ancestor Ymir, which is honestly how it should be. I never expected The Alliance to stand a chance, and they all got fucking wrecked. I'm completely surprised nobody died, I feel like that'll be changed next chapter, though; unfortunately. My main question is: What the fuck do The Alliance plan to do next without Armin and Pieck? Also, seeing the past shifters was fucking amazing and I didn't expect that shit.
Decent chapter. I gave it a 3/5, because it was a purely action, set-up chapter with not so great action scenes, at least compared to other great fight scenes in the series. Still, we got quite a few nice panels and interesting powers, so i will be looking foreard to the payoff.
eren better be in the next chapter idc đâŒïž
Eren is trying to kill his friends, Ymir is not controling him, he is FREE. Accept it already.
FALCO WILL EAT EREN LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I need this tension between mikasa and Eren resolved in the following chapters....these two are the only characters regarding whom I'm totally not sure what tf will end up happening to them.
Hange would've loved to see all the different types of titans from bygone times. I wish they were still alive, I miss them.
I can't believe that best boy Bertholdt Hoover, the one true God of Destruction, is back, and as usual, the first thing Isayama does is make him cry. Absolutely incredible. This is all I'll think of this month.
I think the Ymir revelation was huge but other than that it was an anxiety-inducing rollercoaster of will they, won't they (die). Nothing much happened. I feel antsy
I think there is a possibility that eren and ymir brought back the shifters because they agree (mostly) with the rumbling and bert is crying because he knows what he has to do to ensure it
I wonder if Ymir regrets setting those pigs free. It was the act that set her life into further misery. I think it's beautiful but tragic how Eren really gave her back the will to fight.
I'm blown away
I'm honestly shocked at how incredible this story has become. Much like Bertholt I feel like I'm fine with whatever happens, because this whole journey and the world are incredibly cruel. And that does not make it bad by any means, it makes it more meaningful.
I'm not a huge fan of the fight scenes so I'd just like to see a satisfying climax and conclusion to the fight soon. Looking forward to Levi killing Zeke and all the reunions.
I'm really optimistic about Bertholdt possibly coming back, oh gods I hope he comes back.
I'm scared because this chapter didn't progress a lot of the story and we only have 3 or maybe 4 chapters left.
Isayama really got to flex his ability to design terrifying monstrous titans again.
It was an interesting chapter. It really works well if you think about it. Regular humans who are humanity's last hope, the strongest soldiers left are against two literal gods. Of course it will not be easy at all, Ymir summoning all those titans and everyone nearly dying multiple times is proof that you cannot defeat such gods that easily. Very excited for the next chapter to see how everything else plays out.
Maybe Anni can use her female titan powers and attract all of the former titan shifters - so that Mikasa detonates the Bombs.
Mikasa deserves a fuckn BREAK. like God she saw her family get butchered TWICE, first by humans, then by titans and now fckn Eren took away the one family she was desperately trying to protect. If anyone should've gone crazy like Eren it's mikasa. She does seem to be at her wit's end and ready to go above and beyond after saving everyone in this chapter and seeing the harm Ymir/Eren is causing. But since she's always done what she believed in, no matter what she does, I just want Mikasa's character to get some sort of happiness by the end of it. Is that too much to ask :/
Nobody said âThe Eagles are comingâ bad chapter 0/10. Iâm kidding. But in all seriousness I really just want to see the ending already. Iâm going to imagine it ends with the remnants of humanity rebuilding and promising to never be turbo-racist ever again while a tired Historia looks on with her baby saying âYou are freeâ or something.
PIECK DONT DIE I LOVE YOU!!!!!
PIECK GREATNESS NEXT EPISODE
Reibert pandering for this chapter. It was a tad too fast but I love the focus on Reiner reacting to the CT attacking him. reiner could ALMOST die of the gayest way possible had Jean not butted in.
Screamed when Annie came on
Sets up for a super exciting finale
spare eren POV crumbs? dunno what this man been thinking since chapter 86
stanning bertholdt hoover isn't just a hobby, it's a lifestyle, a reason to breathe, he's also an art, the first gift you open on xmas, a hug from a loved one, he is everything I have ever wanted, and everything I needed.
hOLY FUCKING SHâ
I cant see when or how it'll end
I did NOT expect Armin to get tongue porn'd. It's hilarious to imagine Annie seeing that HAHAHAHAHA
I really miss eren so much...AoT without him...it's long time we didn't see him pls isayama):
I rlly donât see Ymir the same way and I hope it wonât affect the way I see Eren
I still miss Hange :(
I think Bertholdt was crying because his Titan was forced to attack and eat Reiner, against his own will
I think Connie will be the one to help Levi take down Zeke. Levi will live!!!
I thought it was very good. Not peak AOT but great! There was to many saves before death , reminded me of bleach. Seeing the old Titans was really cool and the action was great also.
I want armin and annie flashback in next chapter
i want EMA meet again):
I want Mikasa to choke Eren with the scarf
I want monke boi back :(
I want more Eren
I want more!!!!!!!
I wanted see Historia
I was really excited to hear we were getting more bertholdt
I was vey hyped because of this chapter and it delivered. During all the chapter i was like "someone's gonna die someone's gonna die" and when Berthold's titan appears and eats reiner's titan I screamed, but that son of a bitch is inmortal hahah.
idc idc come back to save pieck and armin please
It gives the idea of how powerful that titan god is, i think it lives up to Rod's description of titam god and how powerful it felt during Ymir's backstory (her form)
It got really hype when all the past shifters came over but Pieckâs bomb failing could be seen a mile away. Over amazing with some nice moments.
it is really, life and death situation. still, looking forward to this especially the ending. how will aot end? surely, it will be a legacy. a great masterpiece made by isayama-sensei.
it maintains a nice pace
It sucks. Manga went downhill since chap 105. The shit needs to end.
It was a classic high tension action chapter which I loved
IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZINGđŻđŻđŻđŻđŻđŻđŻđŻđŻđŻ
It was amazing and full of a lot of lore!
It was amazing! I'd say this could be one of the best chapters written! So much action went on to the point where I hope MAPPA has a decent sized budget to animate it all. I'm really eager to see what the next chapter has in store. The main thing I'm looking forward to that wasn't listed here is basically what will happen to Levi. Is he going to survive through all this, or is he going to succumb to his wounds? Is he going to pair up with Zeke to take down Eren? Or is he going to stay on the "sidelines" untill the war is over?
It was fun, but somewhat inconsequential aside from Falco
It was good, i just need some answeres. Ymirs ability was so sudden.
It was great to finally see previous titan shifter forms, especially the beast titans.
It was just overall so epic
It was really great in terms of action but disappointing as well since there was too much plot armour - I was expecting at least one death.
it was really nice before the episode, it's all getting so intense and i didn't expect ymir to go in with a bang like this
It was really nice, all the symbolism, along with Mikasa with the wings was amazing.
it was super crazy
It'll probably be more enjoyable in the anime (if MAPPA even tackles this). Straight battles have never been this manga's strong suit.
Jean, dare to die and I won't love you anymore >:'(
Its up to ho wmany chapters we have left, if we have like 10 it was a very good one, if we have smt like 3 ( that i dont think so ) it was waste of time
Levi is almost certainly dead/dying
Levi might be a âslaveâ to being a hero but heâs a victim of his own popularity which is preventing Isayama from killing him off. We know heâs not gonna fulfill his promise to Erwin because Levi never gets what he really wants, surprise surprise. But if he keeps getting injured and left out of action heâll live the rest of his life with nothing but regrets.
levi please don't die
LEVI PLEASE SURVIVE :(
levi u ok buddy
Levi's leg is not daijobu,,, is he even alive
Lol who TF cares about Bert? He killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Eldians alongside Reiner and Annie. I still say he deserved what he got and is not worthy of any kind of sympathy, no matter how many angsty teardrops Isayama draws on his stupid face.
looking forward to seeing it animated.
Lots of weirdness, but still great
man the titan battles were great, seeing all the previous titans fight was pretty awesome seeing the hopelessness form the alliance really showed the reality of it all, now they lost 2 additional titans leaving Eren with 6 and the alliance down to 3
MAPPA gon be hurting
not enough lesbians
Not for the chapter but, All the openings and endings(lyrics and images) of the series have some details of the things we are experiencing with the latest chapters
That being said that Annie scene was pretty cringe. I expected that, but it was so cliché it's ridiculous.
ONLY BERT & PIECK HAVE RIGHTS
overall good! it was alot to process but im on board and excited for the next one
Pls end it Mikasa, you can do it.
Plz yams don't give me hope like this
Professor X vs. Magneto soon
really crazy. You have to admit that Isayama doesn't stop when it comes to creativity.
Really curious about Bertolt apparition
Pretty good. As much as I want the Alliance to win in the end, their utter defeat this chapter felt more realistic, than if they managed to actually do anything.
Really liked Jean and Reiners moments this chapter, overall a good chapter that flew by. Hope quickly turned into desperation but Falcons teams arrival means they got one more chance. Armin capture thing was a little weird but more or less makes sense.
Since the rumbling started, this series has became more dull and predictable. Loads of plot armor, stupid teosts only for shock value and weird pacing are major problems in this arc. Too bad, because the post timeskip portion of this manga up until  the rumbling was one of the best pieces of media I had seen. But now I am only expecting the boring  cliche shonen ending.
Still hate Annie being back, she can still go.
Still think Mikasa is gonna be the one to either kill Eren or bring him back to his senses somehow
The afterlife thing still hasn't answered and I wanna know how's the corps doing T_T
The Alliance got dumpsterd yet no one died. They'll probably die in all in one chapter.
the art, as usual, was really good
There are still some mysteries to solve and things to do (like EMA final convo, which I don't think will last just 2 or 3 pages) in so little time, I'm kinda worried to be honest.
This chapter is full of plot twists, I didn't even expect the storyline to turn out like this.
This chapter is painfull and more action at the same time and i hope there are still chances that there old happy days will be back
This chapter was actually exciting! And thank goodness Bertolt is finally back!!!!! So many people assumed he was finished and forgotten, but a small group of us knew Isayama wouldn't leave us hanging without his closure. I'm looking forward to learning why we're seeing him now and whatever's going to happen to Armin
This chapter was breathtaking and hard to continue due to the speculations that someone was going to die. I feel like the next few chapters is where things start to get serious if not already. I found it very enjoyable yet nervous at some moments.
This was so crazy and hopeless like it's peak apocalypse even more than rumbling. It's a nightmare I love Isayama
Too many last-seconds saves kinda ruins the tension.
umm it would've been better
Ummm this chapter had too much suspense
uuuuuuuhhh nothing else i guess
Very PogChamp
We are going to get the best manga ending ever.
Nobody is free yet...

âšâ[ćčžăăȘ4ćšćčŽ!/Happy 4th Anniversary!]ââš
4â Ose came home today with the FIRST ticket and I've never been so happy!! I've been wanting his 4â for so long now and now that I've gotten it, I started writing a self indulgent fic of Summoner-chan using up the Platinum Lil Salomon card just for Ose! Hope everyone enjoy reading it!
Hurried footsteps echoed lightly through the halls, almost resembling like an excited child awaiting their gift under the tree when it was Christmas morning. The brunette couldn't help but giggle and grin with joy, gripping the single card in between her fingers. The thought of surprising her favourite familiar made her heart blossom with flowers, butterfies swooning in her stomach. The short female hastened her steps more, eager of seeing the therian clad in a white suit
The leopard was idling by the garden, the various plants and flowers from otherworldly realms made him felt that he had visited the realm just by looking at them. Truly, it gave him a sense of serenity and tranquility. Being a triple agent was certainly thrilling but exceptionally exhausting to say the least, though, he didn't expect to have become one of the familiars of the very infamous guild master and her guild, Hanasaki Abuto of The Summoners
And he certainly and absolutely didn't expect to be tackled from behind as a loud cry of his name soared into his ears, their arms wrapped around his midsection and as the grip tightened at every second. His suave smile grew even wider as he very well knew who it was before looking over his shoulder only to be greeted with brown orbs glittering in the sunlight, a toothy grin that was accompanied by the giggles slipping through her lips
The fem eased her grip as she let the therian turns his body to face her, diving her face into his broad chest and having to earn a light chuckle out of him. Large diamond spotted hands caressed the cheek of his beloved summoner, his heart swelling with adoration as she leaned more into his touch before placing her small gentle hands on his own, her dazzling smile seemed to pull him more into the dangerous game called love. He had his fair share of affections but not as strongly as he felt towards the young lady
"My, my, boss. You seemed to be such in a good mood while being even more cuter today. Has a miracle happened while you dear handsome familiar was away?" The leopard therian cooed, a surge of pride coursed through his veins when his green eyes caught up to the reddening hues of her features. Now that he had taken a great look of her face, he noticed that the usual full lips was glossed and it was slightly tinted, marvelously enhancing the natural colour and it went gorgeously well with her sun kissed skin.
Oh how ironic it was that he was granted with such a heavenly view despite being a creature from the depths of Gehenna. He wholly welcomed the gift that whatever ethereal beings had given to him, whether it be the Gods of the Heavens or the Devils of the Hells or maybe it was mix of the two but either way, he's not complaining of it. The sight of a card adorned with the lines of gold covered his field of vision before having it lowered, the young lady peaking through as if to see his reaction
It seemed to be that his summoner had recently got a handful of Platinum Lil Salomon tickets as she calls it, from what she had enthusiastically explained to him before, it had the ability to summon a familiar of their own choice, even summoning to an even powerful and stronger variant of the familiar. The male didn't considered himself special or eye catching compared to the other familiars she had on her team like for example, the butler from the Ikebukuro Berserkers and the prosecutor from the Rule Makers as both had evolved into their highest form unlike him, who has still yet to be given the opportunity of having the privilege of such
A feeling had wormed through its way into his heart, a feeling that he tried to extinguish but the leopard had underestimated its untamed fire, rivaling to even the fire that spawned in the lowest pit of Gehenna. The notorious feeling that could sever, crush and erase bonds like no other was jealousy. The man would rather lop his head off than let his charming, collected and flirtatious image to be stained with jealousy, no, he wasn't going to submit and surrender to it so easily without battling the wretched emotion with all his might
The therian closed his eyes and hummed as if in thought as he had guessed that she was going to use it to summon more variants or get the same kind to increase the strength for the other two companions but went along using a trick up his sleeve. "Looks like your devilish familiar is a bit clueless today, boss. Mind enlightening me who's the lucky man who's going to be summoned?" said the spy. The brunette's smile was replaced with a pout, her brows furrowed as she let out a huff and her hand was quick to playfully smack the therian's chest before the male breath out a small 'ouch' from the attack
"You're really going to make a girl say it first?..." Oh? Well that's new. Make a girl say it first? What in the world did his summoner was going to say? The fem felt like she was shrinking under the gaze of her familia who turned quiet and merely was waiting for her answer by the looks of it. Oh how she wanted the ground to swallow her up whole, sadly, miracles don't happen that often so she's left with to deal with her own embarrasment. Her gaze was anywhere else than gazing into those hypnotizing green eyes, resembling to a precious mineral stone that she adored, emerald
Clearing her throat, the fem raised the fancy card up, using it as a shield to block her blushing face and to avoid looking at her own familiar to save herself from the embarrassment. The card slowly started to glow, the colours shifting from red to green to grey before settling down with purple. As the card glowed, the image of the goat transient that was on it, too, changed as well, morphing entirely into another transient. The image swirled vigorously and the glow grew brighter and brighter, the therian having to squint his eyes from the light. With a loud shing, the purple mysterious glow faded and turned into mist, covering the pair as the wind picked up and blew it all away gently
The choice of the summoning has been done, now all the summoner of the card have to do is to cast the card, just like summoning familiars from the App (Gacha). The fem was shaking with anticipation and nervousness, the silence of her familiar was eating her away, was he not happy that he was chosen? "Boss" The sudden call made the therian's summoner jumped at the sound of her addressment, pulling the card closer to her face as she let out a shaky hum as an answer of his call. "Don't be like that... Won't you see your darling familiar's face, boss..?" The brunette bites down her lip when the side of her face was fanned with hot, long, breaths of air. Large calloused hands were placed on her waist, sliding down agonizingly slow before resting themselves on the hips, thumbs drawing circles on the clothed area
A gasp had slipped through, the fem's voice quivering when the therian placed his lips on the unprotected skin of her neck, easing his way up while leaving soft kisses on the flushed flesh, soft pants were also induced from the mere action. "Still not budging, I see? How admirable of you to stand your ground after that stunt I pulled, boss. Though...I doubt that you'll last after this one" With a lick of his lips, his resting hands started to move down further, inching closer and closer to his beloved summoner's backside. Just as he was about to reach, the young lady let out a squeal of surrender, her hand tapping on his white clad shoulder as the other still held on to the card
"I'll look at you! I'll look at you! Just- You're going to make me overheat from all of that..!" Chuckling, the male swiped the card away from her fingers, the young lady letting out a strangled 'hey!' before quickly shutting up when the leopard placed a firm hold of her waist, their faces undeniably close. "Not so hard isn't it, boss? You could have listened to me sooner but, ah, alas you caused your own downfall, didn't you?" The leopard donned in the suit said teasingly, sending out a wink into the fem's direction
"Now there's must be a reason of why you chose me, say boss?" His only response was silence, his summoner batting her eyelashes at him, putting on the 'I don't know what you're talking about' look. Most of her friends and familiar were all too knowing of this look, the girl being a terrible liar while being blatantly obvious that she was hiding something. With the rule that the therian had, he had already seen through her, completely capable of seeing the answer that he looked for but the leopard wanted to hear it from her own very lips instead, it's more fun teasing and irking out the answer rather than by using that Rule of his.
"I w-wanted to summon that Red Oni!"
"Didn't you already have him, boss?"
"I-uh! w-wanted you to be stronger!"
"How nice of you to think of me boss but that's not entirely it isn't it?"
"You said that you wanted evolve right!! Then I took the chance and used the card for you!!"
"Indeed I do but there's no reason for you to willingly do so when you have other tons of familiar befitting of the card. Unless you have something important to tell me..?"
"Urk!.."
The brunette whined, all of her lies were cut down by the statements and questiones that her familiar dropped down on her. There's no more room to run to anymore, she's cornered and the truth is begging to be told, her heart leaping out from her chest from the frenzied situation. The summoner's lips moved but the sound of the words were extremely dimmed and it came out as a muttering to herself, fingers fiddling with the hem of her school jacket. The reaction from her is truly priceless! The male's sensitive ears took note of the words she just said but there's no way he's going to miss the opportunity to tease her more, filling up the desire to take her right then and there from the cute reactions she's giving
The leopard placed his hand behind his ear and leaned down, his signatures smirk on display for the world to see "Hmm? I couldn't hear what you said, boss. Mind repeating that for me?" The young lady started to stutter and trip on her words, all of this amused the therian that embraced her. Her hands reaching up to her face before cupping them, eyes shut and brows furrowed, the blush on her face was apparent "Because I love you, alright!" Yes, the answer that he was finally waiting for, the confession of her love to him. Before all of this event happened, the leopard therian had gotten his answer just by glancing to the cheery summoner of his when they hugged him. Their confession of love was written all over them
Ose figured his summoner had enough of his teasings, gently pulling her hands that cupped her face, his expression softened when the girl looked up to him with the same brown orbs that he stared into when he was summoned. The therian came nearer to his summoner, the space between them no more as two figures melded into one, lips pressed with one another, the summoner's eyes widen in shock before fluttering them close before kissing him back with the same fervor he's giving to her
The therian pulled away reluctantly, his sense of thought chipped when a soft moan of his name reached his ears, quickly regaining back his thoughts as he pressed another kiss on her temple. For now, the silence between them was all he needed. The love that was kept away in his heart blossomed, dancing with joy and happiness as the sun shone on to the waves and bid the flowers goodbye before another beacon of light replaced it, which was the Moon. The spy planned on returning the feelings that his summoner had for him in another different way but this was sufficient for him too, he guessed
Hoho! Quite lengthy than I expected to be honest but still happy with it!! I hope that everyone is having fun with the Anniversary!! Summoner-chan, signing off!â

Tomorrow: Jungkook x Reader
**
Pairing: Jungkook x reader
Genre: Fluff. Grad student au!; grad student! jungkook; grad student! reader; grad student! bts
Word count: 4.6k
Warnings: Suggestive language, mild kissing. Not much else really.
Summary: At the beginning of your third year of your PhD program, you didnât expect many changes. Until the new PhD cohort started classes, and Jeon Jungkook became part of your group of friends.
A/N: i just wrote this randomly with zero plot in mind. idk what this ended up becoming but read it and lemme know if you like it?Â
âChoi is a madwoman. I swear she makes me do so many lit reviews just to see me suffer.â Park Jimin, 2nd year PhD student, works part time at HopeWorld dance studio, and is currently regretting many of his life choices.
âI told you not to say yes to every single project that came your way.â Min Yoongi, 4th year PhD student, weekend DJ at Club Moonlight, recipient of the universityâs most prestigious research grant, currently lives in a posh apartment four streets away from the main research lab.
âWeâre older. Which means we have more experience. Which means we tend to be right more often.â Kim Seokjin, another 4th year PhD student, enrolled into the PhD program after realising that the completion of his MBA meant he would have to join the family business, amateur chef with professional sass, and sole reason behind Min Yoongi being able to afford living in a posh apartment four streets away from the main research lab.
âNot when you bet Tae he couldnât finish grading Kangâs first year Intro class papers in 24 hours.â Jung Hoseok, 3rd year PhD student, simultaneously working on a second Masterâs degree, also happens to run HopeWorld dance studio during his oodles of free time.
âSpeaking of, werenât you supposed to treat us if you lost the bet, Seokjin?â Kim Namjoon, 3rd year PhD student, plant dad, head of the graduate student council, and all-around overachiever.
âTae was supposed to choose the place. Did you decide on which exorbitantly expensive restaurant Seokjin is going to take us to, Tae?â Y/L/N Y/N, 3rd year PhD student, roommates with Namjoon and Hoseok, addicted to bubble tea.
âI have a better plan. The incoming first year PhDs are supposed to have their orientation tomorrow. I think Seokjin should organise a mixer to welcome them.â Kim Taehyung, aforementioned âTaeâ, 2nd year PhD student, works part time at the local art gallery, roommates with Park Jimin, deceptively fast at grading papers.
âI do not remember agreeing to that,â said Seokjin, with a frown, shutting his laptop with a definitive snap.
âCome on, itâs not like you canât afford it,â Yoongi remarked, not having looked up from the large stack of papers in front of him. âIf you can insist on paying 3/4ths of the ridiculously high rent of our apartment even though we could have moved into the perfectly reasonable priced place 20 minutes away from the lab, you can damn well afford to host a mixer for the incoming cohort.â
â20 minutes by car. It takes 45 minutes to walk there, Yoongi. Or do I need to remind you of the fact that only Y/N and Sooyoung own cars in our department?â scoffed Seokjin.
âDo I hear trouble in paradise? Have Yoongi and Seokjin finally had their first fight after years of marital bliss?â Lim Sooyoung, 4th year PhD student, part-time yoga instructor, full-time reluctant designated driver due to being the only other PhD student in the department with a car.Â
âHilarious,â grumbled Seokjin. âThat joke is about as old as the milk carton at the bottom of Namjoonâs fridge.â
âThatâs still there?â asked Hoseok, scandalised. âYou told me you threw that out 4 months ago!â
âItâs a limited edition Blue Bean milk carton! I couldnât throw it out, Hobi,â replied Namjoon, sheepishly. The use of Hoseokâs nickname meant that he had run out of logical arguments against throwing out the milk carton that had been purchased three months into their first year of doctoral studies.Â
âHave you ever considered emptying out the contents and keeping just the carton?â you asked. This suggestion was met with the raising of an eyebrow and the throwing of an airpod by Namjoon. Unfortunately, this also meant that the airpod didnât reach its intended target.
âOw!â exclaimed Hoseok, rubbing the side of his face where the airpod had made contact. âThis is why youâve been through 33 pairs of airpods in the last year, Namjoon! You have dormant violent tendencies and terrible hand-eye coordination.â
âNow back to that mixer,â said Taehyung, turning towards Seokjin. âIâm thinking around 5 pm at the Underground should be good. What do you think?â
âFine,â sighed Seokjin, reluctantly. âIâll send a message on Slack. Whoâs got the first yearsâ contact info?â
xxx
The next day, you found yourself struggling to find parking outside the Underground, despite it being 4.30 pm on a Tuesday. Namjoon and Hoseok were sitting at the back and discussing ways in which they could watch as many of the student films that were being shown over the weekend, while Taehyung sat shotgun and muttered to himself as he tried to destroy some kind of adversary on that godforsaken game that he always seemed to play. You whipped out your phone and started texting Sooyoung about whether she had found any parking.
SY: just parked⊠sending you the location⊠its behind the club
SY: is seokjin with you
Y/N: thanks!
Y/N: no iâve got tae joon n hobiÂ
SY: ok⊠wonder how heâs getting here⊠yoongiâs with me⊠said seokjin left a while back
Y/N: idk⊠sure he found something⊠uber or lyft or whatever⊠don't worry he won't ditch lolÂ
Y/N: i found a spot damnnnnn. cya in a bit
SY: lol tae wouldnât let him live if he ditched
SY: nice :D yoongi and i are in the purple section
The purple section was undoubtedly the best spot in the Underground, as you had discovered almost 2 years ago. Being new to the city, you had basically followed Joon and Hobi wherever they went to socialize or get food. It was around the end of your second month in the program that Seokjin planned a mid-semester gathering, refusing to eat at, in his words, âanother cheap taco truck masquerading as kitschy Instagram baitâ. That was your first encounter with the Underground as well as your first experience in the purple section. Simply put, it had the best sofas and chairs, an abundance of vintage arcade games, easy access to the bar and food counter, and a separate music setup. It also cost a lot more to sit at the purple section, but Seokjin had never been the type to scrimp when it came to anything. It had become a kind of tradition after that; every time someone had a birthday, Seokjin would reserve the purple section for the evening. Not having grown up surrounded by luxury and riches, it was sometimes difficult for you to understand how Seokjin never thought twice before spending money on things. Then again, you doubted you wouldâve been this thoughtful even if you had this kind of money at your disposal. Seokjin mightâve been hard to read at times, but his heart was in the right place.
Speaking of, you spotted Seokjin standing next to a couple of people you didnât recognise. Deciding that this was probably the best time to get introduced to the first years, you walked over to them with a smile.
âJust deposited Joon, Hobi, and Tae near the bar. I feel sorry for your tab today, Seokjin.â
Seokjin lifted one of his thick arched eyebrows at you and then burst into his signature windshield wiper laugh. âIâll give them a free pass today. Afterall, itâs the beginning of a new academic year!â
âYouâre planning on dumping all of Kangâs data analysis on them, arenât you?â you asked, trying to suppress a grin.
âAh, Y/N, you know me so well,â he grinned, his features lighting up mischievously. âBy the way, hereâs two thirds of the new cohort. Song Yeri and Jeon Jungkook.â
You glanced at the two unfamiliar people and smiled in greeting. Yeri was a petite girl with long black hair who quickly fell into conversation with you. Jungkook, on the other hand, gave you a soft nod and walked over to where Jimin was opening a couple of beers.Â
âSo is Professor Kang someone we should be worried about?â asked Yeri, not giving you much time to pay much attention to Jungkook. âI wouldnât want to be unprepared.â
Seokjin laughed at her worried tone. âStraight off the bat, huh?âÂ
Yeri flushed slightly, tucking her hair behind her ear self-consciously. âOh no- I mean, it just seemed like that from your conversation!â
âDonât worry, Yeri,â you assured her. âSeokjinâs a fourth year - not much phases him. Heâs doing his PhD under Kang so he has to do tons of data analysis for her projects. Which he sometimes dumps on people who have been bothering him.â
Yeri looked suitably concerned at this new piece of information. She glanced at Seokjinâs handsome profile and smiled uncertainly. You couldnât help but giggle at her reaction. It really was difficult to get a grasp on everyoneâs personalities just by their looks. Each and every guy in the department was strikingly handsome, and Sooyoung, the only other female besides you, looked like she had walked out of a fashion show. It wouldâve been extremely intimidating if you hadnât personally been a witness to how clumsy Namjoon was, how lame Seokjinâs puns were, how scared Yoongi and Hoseok were of anything remotely resembling an insect, how Tae hadnât managed to cook a single meal without setting off the fire alarm or giving Jimin food poisoning, how Jimin often collided into objects because he was laughing too much, or how Sooyoung had gotten lost multiple times on her way to campus in spite of driving along the same road for more than 3 years. You were sure Yeri, and the other two first years, would definitely get over the initial nerves and intimidation surrounding their colleagues. In fact, if Jungkookâs animated conversation with Jimin was anything to go by, it seemed like he had gotten over that already.
âCome on, Iâll introduce you to the others.â You steered Yeri in Sooyoung and Yoongiâs direction.
xxx
âThanksgiving next week! I cannot wait to get away from this blasted Ethics class!âÂ
You were currently in Seokjin and Yoongiâs shared posh apartment, trying to proof-read a paper before the conference deadline. On the couch next to you sat Seokjin and Namjoon, eyes blinking rapidly in tiredness, while Jimin sat across from you, his silver hair tied into a messy ponytail.Â
The door to the apartment swung open at that moment as Jungkook walked in, armed with takeout from at least 4 different places.
âI come bearing sustenance,â he announced, as Jimin jumped up with surprising alacrity and rushed towards him.Â
âYour Busan blood runs strong, my friend,â said Jimin, appreciatively, eyeing all the different containers on the table. âI knew I could count on you.â
âThat makes zero sense, Jimin,â scoffed Sooyoung. She was buried deep inside Yoongiâs favorite bean bag, having taken it over since the owner was currently not at home. âBut liâl Jeon has proven to be a valuable addition to our department.â
âUgh! Donât call him that! Liâl Jeon sounds like something else,â you said, scrunching your nose in distaste.
âI agree,â replied Jungkook, rolling up his sleeves as he began opening the containers carefully. âBut i can assure you of one thing - there is nothing liâl about this Jeon. In any sense of the word.â
âIâve lost my appetite,â you declared, throwing a particularly soft pillow over your face.Â
Three months into the semester and Jungkook had become an integral part of your group of friends. It had turned out that Jungkook and Jimin knew each other very well, having gone to school together in Busan. Itâs not as if you hadnât become well acquainted with the other two first years - Yeri still consulted you whenever she needed advice on how to deal with grading or professors or classes in general; and Lauren, an international student from France, was very friendly and turned up at all the department hangouts. But Jungkook seemed like he had been part of your group forever - not someone who had met almost everyone for the first time about 3 months ago. As was customary with first year PhD students, they were required to complete a few mandatory courses before being allowed to customize their coursework around their individual research interests. So even though Jungkook had all the same classes with Yeri and Lauren, almost every moment outside of classes was spent with one of you.
âI canât believe itâs already time for Thanksgiving,â said Jimin, popping an entire dumpling into his mouth. â-ime eeli plyz.â
âChew your food, you barbarian,â scolded Seokjin, blowing on a particularly large piece of fried chicken before putting the entirety into his mouth. A couple of chews and a large swallow later, Seokjin was ready for a second piece.
âSpeak for yourself,â remarked Sooyoung, holding onto her food protectively.
âI remember Yoongi telling us during our orientation,â Namjoon piped up, a can of beer in his hand. ââIn a PhD program, days are slow, but semesters are fastâ. I thought he was high at that time, but I realise now that heâs a true genius.â
âI still donât get why youâre such a Yoongi fanboy,â grumbled Seokjin, settling comfortably into the couch once again. âIâm just as wise, and definitely a lot funnier.â
âDonât forget about being a drama queen,â said Sooyoung, nudging Seokjinâs knee with her toes. âYouâve got that one over Yoongi as well.â
âFour years and you're still as ungrateful,â sighed Seokjin, looking uncharacteristically cheerful at the teasing.Â
âAt least Iâm consistent,â shrugged Sooyoung. âGimme some of your kimchi.â
âConsistency is only useful across data samples,â remarked Seokjin, picking up a small amount of kimchi with his chopsticks and feeding Sooyoung. âNot sure how desirable it is in human relationships. Life would be unbearably dull in that case.âÂ
âTheyâve been dancing around each other for as long as Iâve known them. Why canât they just get together and stop their incessant flirting in front of the rest of us,â you muttered darkly, vigorously pouring chili oil over your ramen. You, Namjoon, and Jungkook were still getting your food from the kitchen, while Jimin had gone ahead and joined the incessantly flirting pair in the living room.
âY/N is always so bitter about anything to do with romance,â chuckled Namjoon. âJungkook, do you know how annoyed she was when Hobi started dating last year?â
âNo, I donât think Iâve had the pleasure of hearing that story.â Jungkook glanced at you cheekily, while popping open a can of beer.
âShe didnât speak to him for an entire week. Which was particularly inconvenient because the three of us had just started living in the same apartment, and we were all assigned to assist Choi on her year-end department survey. Poor Hobi thought he might have to find a new place to live.âÂ
âIâm sorry? Were you the one who came back home after extended office hours to find your friend butt-naked and balls-deep inside the barista who works across the street from our lab? I couldnât get coffee from there for a month because I couldnât look Sujin in the eye without immediately imagining Hobi in his natural drawers.â
Jungkook, who had chosen this exact moment to take a sip of beer, spat out the amber liquid on an unsuspecting Namjoon.Â
âThatâs what you get for deriving pleasure from other peopleâs misfortunes,â you remarked, smugly.
xxx
It was around 11.30 in the morning, when you heard a loud knocking on your apartment door. Classes had broken for Thanksgiving yesterday, which meant that today was your day to catch up on all the sleep you had missed over the last three months. But instead, you had been woken up much ahead of your intended 16 hours of sleep schedule.Â
âYou look awful.â
Jungkook walked into the apartment, looking far too fresh and sprightly for your liking. He was wearing that godforsaken plaid shirt that hung loosely off his body, but would highlight his rather well-defined muscles every time he happened to move in a particular way. You absolutely hated what a tease his shirt was. Fortunately for you, he wasnât wearing the skin tight black jeans which always looked like they were about to burst at the seams, thanks to Jungkookâs equally well-defined thighs.Â
âItâs not even noon. Why canât you call before showing up? Where are your manners, Jeon?â you grumbled, checking to see if your pajamas had any glaring holes in them.
âI need help with the data analysis,â he mumbled sheepishly. âProfessor Lee gave me a really tough dataset because I breezed through the first two assignments.â
âStill donât see why you came over without any notice at this ungodly hour,â you continued, tapping your foot impatiently.
âI also got jjajangmyeon, kimbap, and bubble tea from Kimchi Palace.â
âWhat kind of bubble tea?â you asked, pushing yourself off the doorframe.
âStrawberry milk tea, half sugar, light ice, with extra strawberry jelly, and no boba.â
âI suppose it isnât that early.â
A few minutes later, you were explaining principal component analysis to Jungkook, while eating jjajangmyeon and sipping bubble tea. The kimbap was put into the fridge for later, in case Namjoon or Hoseok wanted to have some when they got home at night.Â
Jungkook was very intelligent; he picked up new concepts quite easily and was one hundred percent committed to whatever he worked on. He also had a refreshing sense of humor, where he didnât always crack jokes or stay in the limelight, but his occasional quips were enough to send everyone into fits of laughter. He got along extremely well with each of them. He and Taehyung often walked around the city taking obscure, artsy photographs. Seokjin had basically adopted Jungkook as a younger brother due to his video gaming abilities. Namjoon was glad to finally have someone who enjoyed going on nature hikes with him, while Hoseok had been hugely impressed at Jungkookâs dancing and promptly asked him to help out at his studio. Jimin already knew Jungkook quite well, and Yoongi was more than happy to teach someone else the intricacies of cooking different kinds of meat. Even Sooyoung, who usually remained closed off from new people, had allowed Jungkook to use her car whenever someone needed to be picked up but she was too exhausted to drive.Â
âIâm sorry I came by so early. I know youâve been looking forward to catching up on sleep over the break,â he said softly, looking up from his laptop. That was the other thing that had struck you about Jungkook, he was very perceptive and sensitive to people around him. A rare quality which you appreciated far more than you let on.
âItâs fine. You saved me from having to cook lunch. That itself deserves many prizes from my end. You know how I hate cooking,â you shrugged.
âSpeaking of, Iâm making dinner for me and Tae tonight. Jiminâs visiting his brother, so it's just the two of us. And since Iâd rather not get food poisoning, Iâm putting Yoongiâs lamb chop recipe to good use,â he grinned boyishly. âYou should come over if you donât have anything else planned. Itâll save you from cooking another meal.â
âI might take you up on that offer. Let me check if either Joon or Hobi are having dinner at home, otherwise Iâll definitely be there.â
xxx
Taehyung and Jimin (and now Jungkook) lived about 10 minutes away from your place. It was a much larger apartment, so three people were more than comfortable there. Jungkook was staying there until he found another place to stay, but judging by how happy Jimin and Taehyung were with him around, he would probably end up staying with them permanently.
âI found parking at your building for the first time today,â you remarked, dropping your bag on the nearest couch.Â
âHalf the people are visiting family over the weekend. You wonât be so lucky next time.â Taehyung walked over lazily, his thick black hair falling messily over his eyes. He was dressed in his favorite Celine t-shirt and a pair of the loosest pants you had seen till date.
âThe permâs still looking good, Tae,â you grinned at him, taking the soda from his hand.Â
âIâm planning on getting it done again once it wears off,â he said happily, settling into the couch. âCatch up on your sleep? Or did Gguk ruin your Thanksgiving plans as well?â
ââAs wellâ?â you asked, trying to suppress a grin.
âTaking advantage of the nearly empty laundry room and washing all the sheets does not count as âruiningâ anyoneâs Thanksgiving plans!â yelled Jungkook from inside the kitchen.
âHe woke me up at 7 am and stripped the sheets off my bed, emptied all our laundry bags, and locked me out of my room so that I wouldnât dirty the bare mattress with my grubby clothes.â Taehyungâs grumbling was always extremely funny because he would end up pouting by the end of his rant and no one would take him seriously after that.
âOkay, the bread is in the oven and should be ready in about 15. Lamb chops are almost done as well. Weâll be dining in no time,â said Jungkook, flopping onto the couch beside you.
âThat gives me enough time to answer the emails Choi sent me this morning. Jimin was right, sheâs a madwoman. Doesnât understand what âa breakâ is , apparently,â sighed Taehyung, getting up and walking towards his room. âLemme know when the food is ready.â
3 years ago, if anyone had told you that you would be more than halfway through your PhD having become close friends with seven of the most handsome guys on campus (or even in the country), you wouldâve laughed at them and then silently questioned their sanity. But now, you couldnât imagine life without them. Even Jungkook, you realised, glancing at the boy next to you. He had also become an extremely important part of your life. He didnât say much, but his actions made things abundantly clear. He was extremely caring and thoughtful, even if he didnât always have the right words to express himself.Â
âWhatâre you thinking?â he asked, looking at you sleepily.
âThat this soda is almost lukewarm.â
âDonât lie.â
âIâm not.â
Suddenly, you felt a rough set of fingers poking your ribcage. Slowly, but surely, you were squirming in place as you struggled to not spill your soda while Jungkook continued tickling you mercilessly.Â
âI know your weakness, remember?â he managed to say between giggles, his voice turning high-pitched as it usually did when he laughed too hard.Â
âGguk stop! The soda! Itâll spill on the carpet!â you gasped, trying to keep your hand steady.
âOh shit! Sorry. Yeah, Jimin would freak out if he saw a stain on this carpet.â Jungkook let you go so that you could place the soda can on the nearest table. But as soon as you had freed your hands, you jumped on him and pinned him on the couch.
âI also know your weakness, Gguk,â you grinned, deviously, before tickling him with all your might.Â
Needless to say, a scenario with two people in their mid-twenties behaving like 4 year olds, was bound to have certain consequences. In this case, it ended with both you and Jungkook falling off the couch, your faces mere inches away from each other.Â
This wasnât the first time you had been struck by how handsome Jungkook was. In fact, you had noticed the exact number of moles on his face and neck, having stopped yourself from reaching out and touching the one under his lower lip on more than one occasion. His large doe eyes also held a certain innocence and wonder in them, even though he was an extremely bright and capable PhD student with a lot of varied knowledge bases. Not just that, his impressive physique had caught you off guard many times. Particularly because it contrasted so heavily with his boyish face.
None of that mattered at this moment, as you could feel his breath on your face. He was so close⊠If you reached up a little bit, you would be-
âThe oven timerâs been beeping for the last 10 minutes. But you both are too busy eye-fucking each other to notice.â
Taehyungâs deep voice caused you both to spring apart from each other, mortification heating up your face and neck. Jungkookâs ears, you noticed, had turned a very beautiful shade of red as well.
Dinner wasnât as awkward as you expected because Yoongi dropped by a few minutes after your âeye-fuckingâ session, extremely hungry and annoyed at Seokjin - who had decided to use this night to slow cook some pork.
âGguk, this is really good,â said Yoongi, once all of you had finished eating. âDidnât think youâd be able to get it right on the first go! Y/N, whatâd you think? Youâve been awfully quiet the whole time.â
You nodded your head in response, keenly aware of Taehyungâs intense gaze that followed your every move. âIt was really good, Gguk. Thanks for a lovely meal.â
âDo you need a ride home, Yoongi?â you asked, once all the dishes had been cleared away. âIâve got my car.â
âLife-saver. I need to pick up a tin of coffee from the convenience store. Iâll meet you at the parking lot in 10?â said Yoongi slipping on his jacket.
âWait, Iâll go with you. I need to buy some soda,â said Taehyung, springing up suddenly. Not bothering to change out of his slippers, he rushed out after Yoongi, but not before glancing quickly between you and Jungkook and sending you a rather outrageous wink.
âThat was⊠weird,â you remarked, relieved to see that Jungkook had missed your exchange with Taehyung. âAnyway, thanks again for a great meal. Youâre a really good cook, Gguk.â
âThanks,â he said, not really looking up from his phone. He had also been rather silent throughout the meal.
âIâm heading out then. See you later, Gguk.â You picked up your bag and proceeded to open the door.
âY/N?â
âYeah?â You turned around to find Jungkook standing rather close to you. You could see the mole below his lower lip quite clearly from here.
âYou never told me what you were thinking about.â His voice was a lot more husky than usual, and you gulped as you realised you had no clue what to say to him.
âI-â
Before you could finish your half-formed sentence, Jungkookâs lips were on yours, kissing you slowly. After being frozen for a second or two, your hands made their way into his soft brown curls, relishing in the feeling of having him so close to you. You realised that you had been wanting to do this for a while now. Maybe even since the first day of classes, when he had offered you his cup of coffee after the machine in the department had stopped working.Â
âNever mind,â he said, breaking the kiss with a soft âchuâ. âYou can tell me another time. Yoongiâs probably waiting at the parking lot.â
âAnd Tae might come back any minute now,â you said, your voice barely above a whisper.Â
âIâll see you tomorrow,â he said, a soft smile on his face.Â
âTomorrow?â It seemed like your brain had short circuited.Â
âYeah.â He dipped down and placed another chaste kiss on your mouth, before displaying his adorable bunny smile. âBut even that seems too far away right now.â
You were really grateful that you managed to get both yourself and Yoongi home without crashing the car that night. Once you got home, you checked your phone and found two messages - a text from Jungkook checking if you had reached home safe, and another one from Taehyung.
T: the couch is off limits. donât even think about it...

Can You See The Sparks?
Pairings: Jake Peralta/Amy Santiago, Ray Holt/Kevin Cozner, Charles Boyle/Genevieve Mirren-Carter, Sharon Jeffords/Terry Jeffords
Warnings: One mention of childbirth (non-graphic)
Summary: The Squad get together for a Fourth of July party!
A/n:Â This is for the @b99fandomeventsâ Summer 2020 Fic Exchange written for @impossiblyizzyâ! Hope you enjoy!
One thing that Jake had never known throughout his years of knowing Captain Holt and his husband: they had the biggest back yard heâd ever seen growing up in the rough parts of Brooklyn. They had a large brick patio, and their garden was surrounded by a stereotypical white picket fence. The grass was perfectly watered, and Jake knew that Kevin had probably calculated the exact amount of water his grass needed to get that specific shade of green, Jake wouldnât expect anything less.
Upon seeing their yard for the first time in daylight, heâd immediately suggested a Fourth of July party around their house. What with the arrival of the latest Nine-Nine baby, Mac, Amy was desperate to get out of the house, meaning their tradition of going to the Peralta-Santiago household would have to be put on hold so the new parents could finally feel moreâwell, human.
It wasnât that Amy didnât want to host, Amy loved hosting parties and conversing with her colleagues, but when she had a screaming baby attached to her, wailing because the noise, or the lack of his father by their side (yes, Mac had turned into a daddyâs boy), or the lack of food being delivered directly to him. When Holt and Kevin had agreed to his suggestion, and invites had been given to the squad and their families, he could feel Amyâs tension around the holiday ease and evaporate, even after Mac had thrown up on her uniform before she left for work.
So, here they were, on the Fourth of July, surrounded by the Squad, their family members, and pets. Although most dogs had been left at home (Charles and Genevieve could not bring their six dogs through Kevinâs freshly vacuumed house). Diaz had however fought to bring Arlo, considering him as her plus one as she had no family members coming. So, on their perfect green grass that had probably cut with nail clippers, Cheddar chased after Arlo, brushing past the legs of Terry and his wife, arms slung around each other as they watched the twins and Ava play tag with Nikolaj and Iggy.
The kids careered around a large oak tree at the back of the garden, spinning around as they laughed, running back towards where Charles and Genevieve manned the barbeque, all different assortments of traditional American foods sizzling on the grill. That wasnât all, though, as Kevin was cooking pizzas and making potato salad, cakes, casseroles and more. Kevin worked side-by-side in a comfortable silence with Rosa as she made cocktails for the adults.
âCan you pass the potatoes?â Kevin asked, quietly and without small talk. He was observant, and throughout their years of small conversations, Kevin knew all too well that Rosa hated small talk.
She passed them wordlessly, watching him as he began to chop them up for the potato salad.
Rosa hovered as she went to pick up the cocktails, turning to Kevin once more, âWhat made you change your mind about us?â She asked, âI mean, you hate cops.â Her mannerisms were blunt, Kevin knew she wasnât trying to offend; she was just a very direct person, and he respected that more than he did others. He did, however, had to think about her question.
When did he start to trust his husbands co-workers? âI donât hate the individuals. I dislike some aspects and prejudices in the system, yes, but I never hated anyone.â
âOh.â
âIf I had to pinpoint the moment my feelings around the nine-nine changed, it would be mine and Raymondâs anniversary, when Charles taught him how to cook. It was quite memorable.â
Rosa nodded âOh,â She said again, unsure how to either end the conversation or continue it âwell, I amâŠglad you donât. Like, hate us, anymore.â She responded in her most sincere voice.
Kevin nodded towards the drinks on the side âThose cocktails can go on the table outside. Use coasters, though, please.â
Rosa nodded, leaving their kitchen and passing the living room, where Amy and Jake were sat with Holt, Gina, Scully and Hitchcock. Surprisingly, through the first few months of Macâs life, Hitchcock and Scully had been surprisingly attentive towards Mac and Amy. Jake would never admit it, but Scully was responsible when it came to children, and he did feel bad that his two kids refused to talk to him since they had grown up.
Mac sat with wide eyes searching around the room, looking up at his grandpa Ray, who was bouncing him on his lap. Amy didnât think sheâd ever seen her Captain so relaxed and smiling, cooing down at the baby occasionally in between leisurely conversations with the small gathering sitting in his living room. Granted, his kind of cooing was a lot more observant than most, saying things like âdid you know you have the perfect weight for your age right now? Yes, you do, McClane, youâre perfect!â. Holt and Kevin were the only ones who would call Mac by his full name, which made it personal to his grandpa and grandad (because if we donât have separate names, Jake, how will he call for us individually?).
The food began to pile high on the outside table, and soon enough, everyone was called to eat. Specifically for this gathering, Kevin had brought a smaller table for the kids to eat at, and was enjoying watching all the kids have their own conversations at the table, most lead and dominated by Iggy, whose presence was as infectious as her mothers, who was also leading the conversation at the adults table. Kevin looked down towards Mac, who had been passed to him now, and adjusted the baby so he was more upright on Kevinâs knee, his arm wrapped around Macâs torso protectively. Kevin smiled at the thought of Mac joining the kids table in a few years, and smiled even larger at being able to watch him grow. Raymond offered him the bowl of salad he had prepared previously, knowing he wouldnât eat the burgers or anything that greasy. He gratefully accepted, and settled into a cycle of eating his food then paying attention to Mac.
âOh, wait, itâs nearly seven, we need to be at the field at nine p.m.,â Amy said, nervously checking her watch
Charles, ever the time-sensitive character, began to sweat and fidget in his chair, eating his burger as quick as possibleâhe had wanted some more unique 4th of July food to be served, but Holt had restricted him to strictly traditional meats, âoh, uhm, itâs fine, if we leave now, we can probably make the end, right?â He turned to his partner, who took his hand and calmed him down.
Gina groaned, âOh my god, you guys, donât get your panties in a twist. Weâll be fine, if weâre late we can commandeer a bus or something.â
âHow long does it take to get to the park?â Amy ignored Gina and directed her question to Kevin, her eyebrows furrowed.
Kevin checked his own watch âOnly a seventeen minute walk. Weâll be fine, Amy.â His voice was reassuring, and so she relaxed, nodding happily. When it was time to go, Holt disappeared into their back room, digging through the things he had brought for the kids, and reaching the best fourth of July traditionâsparklers. He handed them out to the kids (with parental consent, of course,) and watched them happily hold the unlit sticks as Kevin went around and lit them.
Cagney and Lacey began to act out a wand battle worthy of being in Harry Potter, crying out curses that made Jake start to laugh too, practically begging Amy for a sparkler too. She nodded with a laugh, and watched him childishly join in with the twins in their battle.
Nikolaj and Ava, despite their five-year age gap, wrote each otherâs names with the sparklers, and then began to circle and dance with the sparks, all the time being warned to be careful by their dads. Iggy was in her own world, twirling around like a princess, dancing with her sparkler like she was a ballerina preforming for the masses.
Mac watched all the pretty lights from his stroller, making grabbing gestures and watching his dad dancing around with Cagney and Lacey. Amy noticed, when she checked on him for the fifteenth time, that he was laughing, full on laughing, for the first time. His giggles were indistinguishable from those of the other kids, but she started cooing, and Mac laughed harder, looking at his dad dancing around.
âJake!â She called out to her husband, who span around âJake! Jake! Look, heâs laughing!â She excitedly informed him, and Jake looked to Mac, and felt his heart burst. His son was laughing at him. Heâd smiled before, but at four months old, he was uncontrollably giggling.
Uncle Charles appeared, phone in hand, âOhh! I captured the moment, Jakey, donât worry!â He patted Jake on the back
âThanks, Charles.â
The group set off walking to the park, the kids taking turns pushing Macâs stroller, giving Amy and Jake a break, even if they had to make sure the stroller wouldnât capsize.
Amy was talking with Sharon, who, throughout her journey into motherhood, had been a source of comfort. They often bonded over their experience of labour at the precinct, too, even if Sharon didnât have to give birth there.
âYouâre doing good,â Sharon reassured her, âwhen we had our first babies, we had almost no clue what to do. Youâve either done your research or are a complete natural.â
Gina nodded, the one and only time a compliment regarding Amy had ever slipped from her lips âYeah, I mean, when Iggy was Macâs age I was neck-deep in barf and decaf coffee.â
Amy blushed; compliments on her parenting had become the most gratifying thing to hear (other than âdonât worry, Iâll feed him this timeâ, of course). She found herself a little lost for words, but regained them fairly quickly âWell, I had younger brothers and little nieces and nephews growing up. And I read almost every book there was onâŠeverything. Wasnât prepared for birth, though.â
Sharon and Gina both winced âYeah, they donât put that in the lovey-dovey books, do they? If they did, I donât think a single woman would want to go through that.â Sharon said
Amy could only laugh her agreement, hoping that the word âepisiotomyâ would fall out of her memory and vocabulary one day.
When they arrived at the fireworks, the carnival was already in full swing. Terry had been bribed by all three daughterâs pleading eyes, and so far, all three had won a teddy bear (the biggest from the surprisingly easy strength test), and Terry was out a good twenty-five dollars on games and fair-rides. Gina probably had lost the same amount, although she had spent everything on the rides; Iggy never really wanted anything from the games booths, which must be a first for any child ever, Gina had tried to convince them. Charles was out much more, and Nikolaj was now a proud owner of a tiger, teddy bear, and a DIY crystal kit. Heâd also been on every ride conceivable with his parents, and was currently sharing a huge wad of cotton candy three-ways.
Holt and Kevin watched as the kids came up to them after every win, proudly displaying their new item for the pair to hold while they went off to do another ride. Holt would smile, and actually mean it. After Ava dropped off her final win, a mock-forensics kit, she turned to sit in between the two of them.
âI want to be like you and daddy, Uncle Ray!â She had told him (Ava called them Uncle Ray and Uncle Kevin, because grandpa never felt right for the Jeffords family), and Holt had wrapped his arm around her and let her snuggle in closeâfor warmth only, he was sure.
âReally? Well, I have a few friends at the academy, Ava, I will make sure that they have a spot open for the class of twenty-thirty-six.â He said it deadpan, as he often did, but Kevin knew there was a touch of sincerity to his promise too.
âPromise?â Ava had asked, extending a gloved finger.
Holt looked at his husband, who was smiling back âOh, I suppose I do promise.â He said, shaking her pinkie finger with his. She skipped off to tell her dad, leaving the couple alone.
Kevin laughed as Terry listened intently to Ava relaying the story, before looking to Raymond âDo you ever think about how we have managed to adopt a fully-fledged, albeit slightly delayed, adult, and somehow become entwined in othersâ lives, so much so that we are now uncles and grandparents?â He asked.
Raymond pondered for a second, watching the separate families âyes, it is odd.â
âDo you ever regret not having kidsâŠ.adopting them?â
âIt was never allowed when we were in our prime.â
Kevin nodded, looking towards where Ray was staring Jake, grabbing Amy by the waist and kissing her softly, while still keeping one hand on the stroller, âI know. I just sometimes wonder how it would be different.â
âI do too. But, although we are late, I do think of Peralta like a son. Weâve watched him grow over these few years, from a childish boy to a grown, responsible man with a family. Who is still a childish thorn in my side, if I am honest. I think that describes having a child perfectly; watching them grow.â Raymond seemed sentimentalâto anyone else, his voice remained unwavering, but to Kevin, he could sense the fondness, the same fondness that he himself carried.
âI would not change it, either.â
âI know you wouldnât. Heâs strangely ours.â
Nikolaj came running up to them, barrelling into their conversation with brazen confidence, the same type his father and mother had, âMister Kevin! Mister Raymond! The fireworks are going to start!â He had run off as soon as he had arrived. He never called them uncle or grandpa, but that was okay, because Kevin and Holt both knew he had issues with attaching himself to others due to his past. They never asked it of him, anyway. Kevin stood up, dusting off his pants, and began to grab the various toys left with them, before parents came to try and help them out.
The squad and their families all huddled in a muddy and cold field, making sure they didnât lose anyone in the massive crowd forming, most kids sitting on the shoulders of adults. Jake had Iggy on his, who was pulling his hair softly to direct him on where to go, all the time giggling as he obliged to her requests, before standing next to Amy.
The display was amazing, colours of red, white and blue flashing across the starry night sky canvas, painting it in different colours before sharply dissipating. The crowd would let out âoohsâ and âaahsâ every time something vaguely interesting happened, and Jake couldnât help but join in, looking to Amy, whose face was perfectly illuminated in a glowing bright light. He squeezed Iggyâs hand, yelling up to her.
âCan you see the sparks, Iggy?â He was looking at Amy, who had rolled her eyes at the cheesy joke, but for Iggy the meaning was the fireworks, obviously.
âYeah, Uncle Jake!â
Amy wrapped a hand around his waist, allowing herself to be embraced, dodging Iggyâs leg as it swung in the air âEyes on the fireworks, Peralta.â
Jake leaned into her touch, âBaby, youâre a firework. Katy Perry, sheâs always right.â Amy giggled, but it was drowned out by another loud boom. Mac had big ear protectors on, but his eyes still flickered across the sky. Amyâs heart swelled again, her family surrounding her as the fireworks spurred on.
She was so glad that they were invited to Holt and Kevinâs. This was just perfect.
Little did they know, Holt and Kevin had already decided between themselves to make this a tradition to carry on for decades.

âȘ P Jâs PokĂ©Ani Rewind 2019
Hello, yes Iâm still alive for those wondering or care at all :] Just been taking an indefinite leave from all my social media accounts (though you can still see me on Discord: PokĂ©monJesus#2495) since mid-November going through some personal self-discovery journey...nobody misses me anyways. Iâll address that maybe in a future post, but letâs not make this about me...because RIGHT NOW it is time for my 4th annual year-end (and favorite) Tumblr tradition! 2019 was a stressful year for me personally (as you can tell Iâve been on and off here), and I appreciate all of the friends Iâve made within this fandom whoâve stuck with me through it. It was also the year of the successful launch of my new PokĂ©Ani exclusive side-blog @pokeaniepisodesâ where I would do my weekly episode blogging/screen-caps/GIFs for the #pokeani tag. Within the span of 10 months, I would gain over 1,000 followers! Thank you to those who have followed me there as well. Obviously due to my current circumstances, that has been put on halt as well after Sun & Moon ended. Apologies, but Iâll be back in 2020 hopefully. As for PokĂ©Ani, it was bittersweet as we bid Alola farewell with the Sun & Moon series ending heading into the next generation series. If youâre curious to hear what I have to say about the new series, well hereâs your post! The PokĂ©mon anime has officially wrapped up for this year with Ash & Go in the Hoenn region earlier today, in where he WON another tournament showing Go how itâs done! But now, it is time to highlight some of the best episodes (this post will be following the original Japanese release dates, but will still be using the English/game dub names for a universal understanding by all) I personally found noteworthy from each month. Without further ado, letâs take a look back at what the PokĂ©mon anime had to offer in 2019. 1, 2, 3. LETâS GO!
JANUARY - Hello Hapu
The Poni Island adventures begin! And also, the road to Ashâs final grand trial to complete. This mini-arc started a very fun series of character-centric episodes among the main cast and their PokĂ©mon while they were in the island without Professor Kukuiâs guidance. From Sophoclesâs Charjabug evolving to a Vikavolt, and Lanaâs Popplio evolving to Brionne (plus getting Primarium Z!). But the highlight out of all of this was the character arc of the soon-to-be Poni Island Kahuna, Hapu! She was a stubborn trainer who didnât want to interact with anyone or battle Ash. She eventually opened up to him and his friends slowly after getting back her stolen radishes from Team Skull (the first appearance of Plumeria as well). She was a key figure on the classâ expedition throughout Poni for their respective research projects, while Tapu Fini and her late grandfather keep an eye on her progress. Eventually when she did became Kahuna, Ash finally had his rightful battle with her for a grand trial. She didnât gain only a new set of confidence, but a new set of friends too.
FEBRUARY - Mama Mallow makes us cry
As the group continues doing their personal research projects in Poni Island, and after Kiawe clears his own trial with Tapu Fini, we get a feels trip to Mallowâs past. Thanks to Tapu Finiâs mysterious mist that allows people to see the departed, Mallow relives her childhood days with her mother. We not only get a teary backstory of what Mallow said to her ill mother before passing away, but also Lillie & Gladionâs attempt to see their âdeceasedâ father, Mohn. Mallow seeking proper closure, finally reunites with her mother in the mist as they spend as much time catching up with one another ever since their improper argument at the hospital. We then discovered that Bounsweet was actually caught by her mom before gifting it to Mallow as her first PokĂ©mon...who is now a fully evolved Tsareena. There were a lot of good moments like seeing the Stoutland that (as if this wasnât enough of a feels trip) help raised Ashâs Torracat when it was still a Litten, and that Mohn is nowhere to be found in the mist meaning that heâs still alive! Stoutlandâs final gift to Torracat was upgrading its Ember move to eventually learning to use Fire Blast. But the most important thing about this episode, is that it teaches us to be grateful to our parents (or those who raised us) even when it looks like they donât seem to care, we misunderstand and overlook how much they truly care for us. Never take things for granted and live in the moment. In the end, Mallowâs mom gave her one final gift before going back to the afterlife, a Shaymin to care for. Thanks mom :â)
MARCH - Ya boi is never too late!
All we can just say when he was first announced was...finally...or about time! Team Skull boss Guzmaâs long awaited appearance in the PokĂ©mon anime happened when he and the rest of his gang visited the PokĂ©mon School to confront Professor Kukui. After hearing about the official announcement that the first Alola League was going to happen, Guzma is determined to eliminate everything for what it stands for. Meanwhile, everyone in Alola wanted to get in on the action for an opportunity to become a champion, that includes Ash who stood up to Guzma for Kukui. After wiping the floor with Team Rocket, Guzma battles Ash taking interest with his utilization of the Z-Power Ring. Despite newly perfecting Corkscrew Crash, it had almost no damage on Guzmaâs Golisopod. As the battle rages on, Golisopodâs Emergency Exit activates when Pikachu starts to get an upper hand. A stubborn Guzma not wanting to admit what really happened leaves and berates Ash as he sends a clear message on his vow to destroy the Alola League. Guzma and Kukui went face-to-face before Team Skull left, and itâs clear that his intentions were more personal. Thereâs always a reason behind of it all, and Guzma was seeking for vengeance.
APRIL - Mohn is missing
After discovering that their father may still be alive (as mentioned in my February highlight), Lillie and her family are searching for answers with the help of the Aether Foundation. Lusamine then confesses to her kids about an Ultra Wormhole incident that caused Mohn to disappear. As they continue to get more info, they stumble upon Mohnâs room and discovered two very important treasures. A Z-Ring which he used to wear, and a Magearna that doesnât seem to be responsive. Lillie decides to wear and use her Z-Ring until her father is found, while also finding away to bring the Magearna he left back to life. With the blessing of Kahuna Hala and her friendsâ support, she deicides to finally put her Icium-Z to good use by practicing the Subzero Slammer Z-move with Snowy now that she finally has a Z-Ring at hand. She fails at her first attempt, it wonât keep her down from practicing until she gets it right. The episode ends on a very touching note with Lillie reading an entry from her fatherâs old journal revealing that Mohn did in fact bought an inactive Magearna in hopes to restore it to give it to his one and only daughter as a gift <3
MAY - Lanaâs lure of fate
In one of my personal favorite episodes (totally not because sheâs my favorite and the best girl), I got shut up for even doubting that her Brionne would evolve this soon (donât you just hate it when anime previews spoil?). Lana finally decides to make her dream a reality (referenced in previous episodes) to hook a Kyogre at sea! With the help of Ash, they were able to track down a Kyogre that suddenly appeared while the class were fishing. When they discovered that the Kyogre had been poisoned by PokĂ©mon hunters, Lana decides to cure it with an antidote hooked to a special Misty lure she had been given while Ash deals with the troublemakers. Even after curing the poison, the hunters attempting to catch Kyogre made it rage even more. Lana tries to save it by trying to hook him out of the Hunterâs capturing device. She was successful in freeing it but ended up dragging her to the ocean rapidly as a storm develops from an angered Kyogre. And it was at that moment when Brionne wanted to save her trainer from getting dragged all over, evolving to Primarina was the only way to end this perfect storm. Primarinaâs singing calmed down Kyogre, as Lana lifts up her rod graciously with Kyogre in the sky. Dream achieved, and a moment has been made with new sea friend. Now when Lana tells this story, itâs actually the truth and there will be no one laughing now! Later on another episode, Lana & Primarina would learn how to use and master the Oceanic Operatta Z-move, and itâs all thanks to the hook of this Kyogre. Iâm sure Misty is proud as well :)
JUNE - Kid Kukui and Little Litten
Thereâs a Celebi in this episode...you know what that means. Back to the past! While Ash was training with his PokĂ©mon for the Alola League, a Celebi stumbles upon them and transport Ash & Torracat to the same place where they were at, but only many years ago. They meet this little kid that had Litten with him and it was clearly obvious that his was younger Kukui and his (The Masked Royalâs) Incineroar who hasnât evolved yet. However, Ash still had no idea he was in the past and treated little Kukui like any other kid heâd meet traveling. The two bond throughout the episode with their similar attitude when it comes to battling, and Ash gladly guided the little kid on executing Z-moves with their PokĂ©mon. The two even worked together assisting a Totem Trevenant in sheltering all the nearby PokĂ©mon as a rainstorm approaches. Thanks to the good heart of Ash helping out everyone, he receives his own Firium Z from the same Trevenant that gave Kukui his Firium Z. He eventually gets back to his timeline where it seemed to have an effect on the present day Kukui. If it wasnât for that meeting, maybe the professor wouldâve had his vision of forming an Alola PokĂ©mon League if it wasnât for that mysterious older boy he met with his Torracat. A PokĂ©mon time paradox? Maybe...but what I loved about this story is that it repeats itself for the next episode but from the perspectives of Ashâs PokĂ©mon that were left behind in hopes of finding their trainer. Really reminds me of that time PokĂ©mon got separated from their trainers during S.S. Anne arc in the original series, only difference is that the perspectives of the trainers and PokĂ©mon were happening at the same time. But you gotta love a pure whacky PokĂ©mon adventure! Pretty much like a Pikachu short you see before movies.
JULY - Let the League begin!
The moment everyone has been waiting for...the Alola League has officially begun! With everyone prepared to unleash their Z-Power, itâs time for the qualifying round to start. Unlike previous Leagues, this starts off with a free-for-all Battle Royal with a total of 151 competitors but only 16 will advance to the next round. Most of the trainers in this League are recognizable characters if you have watched Sun & Moon in its entirety up to this point. From Mina to Kahili to Acerola to the entire Team Skull gang to Hiroki and even Pikala, every Alola character is here! While all the Island Kahunas serves as the officials for the event. It was fun way to kick-off a 4-month long League arc and they couldnât have it done any other way. The top 16 has been decided and it gave us good match-ups to follow in the next couple of episodes such as, Mallow vs. Lana, a childhood friend clash which also tests Mallowâs courage in battling. Our favorite Team Rocket duo in disguise facing off against one another (canât remember when was the last time we saw that). A sibling battle and a trial on how far Lillie has gone as a PokĂ©mon trainer facing off against her strong big brother, Gladion. And of course, the friendly birby rematch between Ash and Hau. The line-up of matches is stacked! I could not remember how hyped I was for this long-awaited League arc. Some battles mightâve been short and quick, but every participant mattered! How can you not love the Sun & Moon series?
AUGUST - The Alola Final Four
And then, there were four. In the semi-finals bracket, we first have Gladion facing off against Kiawe who defeated Acerola and bested a friend in Sophocles. Heâs pretty much the dark horse in this, but heâs been working hard all series with his battling to get to this point. As Lillie and Mimo (Hoshi) cheer on their big brothers, it was Gladion who got the upper hand and the two exchange in a very meaningful handshake of sportsmanship. Meanwhile on the other side of the semi-finals, Guzma, who blasted through Ilima and Lana, getting his rematch with Ash seeking for retribution after his soft defeat the last time they faced off. It was a clash of personalities as the Team Skull boss vows to get to Kukui by destroying someone who resembles him in Ash and get a big W for his fellow Team Skull outcasts. This battle was more than just advancing through the semi-finals but also the integrity of what the League will become if Guzma is successful in his ploy. Guzma was very aggressive during this match to the point of even scolding his Golisopod. But when you mad, you donât focus well and that became Guzmaâs downfall eventually resulting in his defeat against Ash who battled with his heart. Guzma had to learn the hard way, maybe softened his mindset a bit, but even after losing Plumeria and the rest of the grunts still want to be by his side improving their own skills in battle to be like their fearless leader. You never see a heartwarming ending for a âvillainousâ team in PokĂ©mon before, but I think Team Skull had their own happy ending.
SEPTEMBER - The âCurseâ is finally broken
Ash vs. Gladion. Here we go, the League finals to determine the inaugural champion of Alola. I mean I already made solo-post last September about how BIG this episode/moment was for our capped hero. Their rivalry has been amazing from the get-go. From their first meeting at the beach by Kukuiâs place with a feisty Rockruff that wanted to battle, to the Manalo Stadium battling for a prestigious championship title with Ashâs Lycanroc fully controlled over its rage with dirt. It wasnât a full battle, but 3-on-3 showdown served us one heck of battle! It may not be considered the best by many, but it was still an amazing and fun bout between two trainers who promised each other to meet in the finals of the big stage. The laugh they shared, the flashbacks that was shown to us (with the awesome Type: Wild! music playing in the background), and the storytelling of who wants it more makes you get to the edge of your seat, cheering for Ash to finally win a major PokĂ©mon League. Ashâs newly evolved Melmetal showcased itâs new strength but still wasnât able to beat Gladionâs Silvally. Then, when Zoroark and Pikachu knocked each other out, it was the 1v1 Lycanroc battle that really put this friendly and competitive rivalry full circle.
Ash has NEVER defeated Gladion...until this moment. Heâs been training for this, and it finally paid off. The two Lycanrocâs took no prisoners and went back and forth with one another. In the final blow of that match, Gladionâs Lycanroc used Counter against Ashâs Lycanroc that was charging towards it, but then our big brained hero fights back with their own Counter attack. Never have I heard of Countering a Counter in the PokĂ©mon universe, but using it in this one moment nobody expects, it was the HYPEST way to swerve fans from almost losing the match but ultimately gave an epic counterattack that would knock out Gladionâs Lycanroc. And for the first time since the Orange League, Ash is a Champion. Only this time it is a way bigger deal! Mostly because this is a game-based series which has more meaning when it comes to the PokĂ©mon League.
Old fans, new fans, and casual viewers a like were buzzing within 24 hours after this episode released in Japan that caught mainstream media attention. People who have never seen a PokĂ©mon anime episode in their life (or a subbed episode for that matter) past the original series, wanted to see how this episode went down to see a childhood hero achieve a major trophy. This is how big of a pop-culture icon Ash & Pikachu was among many generations of fans since the showâs launch internationally. This was truly THE PokĂ©Ani moment of 2019. Again, big congratulations to our Alola Champion, Ash Ketchum/Satoshi! Too bad Guzzlord had to ruin the closing ceremony afterparty...Â
OCTOBER - A fiery full final battle
So after becoming Alola Champion, sending three Guzzlords back to where they came from, reuniting with Poipole who evolved into a Naganadel, and The Masked Royalâs identity publicly revealed as Professor Kukui ALL IN THE SAME NIGHT! We finally get our exhibition match between Ash and The Masked Royal, who would like to go under his real identity. This is the final battle, and the promised reward the first Alola Champion gets. This is honestly also reward to the fans giving us one final hoorah for the Alola region with a full 6-on-6 PokĂ©mon battle! I believe this is the only full battle we got to see in Alola and it was definitely worth the anticipation and surprise. Kukui had a lot of secret PokĂ©mon up his sleeve that the viewers donât know about (unless you get spoiled by freakinâ Oha Suta), and it is also the first and only official battle that Naganadel will be part of under Ashâs team. So the excitement levels of this fun 5-PART episode battle were off the roof! Kukui had amazing PokĂ©mon that he kept a secret, but what I do want to focus in this spotlight is the showdown between Incineroar and Torracat. Just like with the Lycanroc duel, these two have similar stories with Torracat never being able to beat The Masked Royal/Kukuiâs Incineroar. Ever since it was still a Litten, the desire to battle strong opponents still burns inside. As the two fiery cats clash in this epic battle, both sides have the same intensity when receiving and taking attacks.
As the battle worn out, both Kukui and Ash activated their Z-Rings together to use Inferno Overdrive against each other. After a gigantic explosion from the Z-move collision it was Torracat who was the last Pokémon standing finally beating its personal battle rival. After a victory screech, I was surprised as everyone seeing it fully evolve into Incineroar. Unfortunately, that evolution took a toll on the newly evolved Pokémon and is unable to continue further. Rest well big kitty, you beat who you wanted to beat and deserve a good rest.
As if that wasnât epic enough, in the final phase of this full battle, Tapu Koko steps in and serves as Kukuiâs last PokĂ©mon and even granting both parties to be able to use Z-moves once again. Fast forward, Ash and Pikachu finally defeated their first opponent when they first set foot in the Alola region with the Z-Ring Tapo Koko gave them in the first place. It clearly now knows that Ash was a worthy holder of using Z-Power and a Champion that everyone can look up to. What a battle. What a series. Thank you Alola. Thank you Sun & Moon.
NOVEMBER - Pikachu Origins
Enter the next chapter. The new era of the PokĂ©mon anime finally launched this in a very different way. The first episode basically serves as the prequel to the PokĂ©mon anime series before Ash had set out on his quest to become a PokĂ©mon Master. Long story short, we can Pikachuâs background story on how he came to be the loving mascot recognized everywhere on paper. I mean who wouldâve thunk it? I just love the fact that weâre getting an origin story of how Ashâs Pikachu when it was still a wild Pichu. Although it wasnât explained how Professor Oak ended up catching the little guy, Pikachu always had a good heart (you know despite rejecting Ash at first lol). The most adorable thing about this episode was the family bond Pichu temporarily shared with this little Kangaskhan family. The little guy was an outcast not really sure where to go or what to do except survive and find food. When that Kangaskhan picked him up as if it was one of its babies, and gained a new caring sibling in the process. It was a wholesome story of calling someone family even though there is no blood relation. Pichu was literally not their kind, but they still loved him as it was them!
Meanwhile, we get a little preview of our new characters from seeing their childhood and setting up the premise for them to cross paths with Ash in the future. The newest protagonist, Go, was a little know-it-all about PokĂ©mon, and he sure bragged a lot of his knowledge on it during one of Professor Oakâs camp (in which Ash failed to wake up for). Along with his worrisome friend, Koharu, they spotted a Mew while going off course in Oakâs tour around their campsite. It would also be the saving grace of the lost baby Kangaskhan who accidentally fell off a cliff after attempting to play with the Mew. After seeing Mewâs psychic abilities, it was clear for Go that he needed to catch Mew one day. This is the initial goal that Go wanted to set out for when heâs old enough.
After the incident with his Kangaskhan sibling, Pichu had to re-think if he wants to continue being a part of a pack that he doesnât even properly belong it in the first place. When the herd of Kangaskhan took shelter in cave during heavy rain, Pichu had to make a tough decision and leave his foster family behind while they were asleep because he knew that the mother Kangaskhan would not let go of someone who it sees as a child of her own. Pichu knew that was the only way, but despite his sad decision he was grateful for the happiness they provided for a lone wolf PokĂ©mon that wandered in the wild looking belong somewhere. It was that same happiness that gave Pichu the strength to evolve to the Pikachu we all know today, and found a forever home with a certain tardy boy a couple of years later that they both formed an inseparable friendship.
DECEMBER - The Great Gigantamax in Galar
Of course, you canât have a new series without showing off a new region?! As our âresearch fellowsâ Ash & Go continue their exploration in the Galar region learning more about the Dynamax phenomenon that causes PokĂ©mon to grow bigger in size, they are about to be in for one gigantic dilemma. They had some trouble when they met a bunch of trickster PokĂ©mon in those Nickit and a dirty Scorbunny trying to steal their food, but that wasnât the last they saw of that Scorbunny. When they took the train to explore the Wild Area, Scorbunny secretly tagged along in hopes to be partners with Go after feeling a connection with the trainer during their first encounter. After MANY attempts of trying get Goâs attention, he finally notices Scorbunny after it kicks a rock to knock down fruit on top of a Snorlax they were observing (that hits Ashâs head first oof). Scorbunny attempts to get caught by Go, but he declined due to his vow for Mew to be his first catch. After the sad rejection, red lights then start to surround the Snorlax that ended up Dynamaxing it to Gigantamax Snorlax! This caused a big road blockage that affects a train line in that area. Ash, Pikachu, Go and Scorbunny decide to team up and move the Snorlax before the next train comes by to avoid a disaster from happening. Ash and Pikachu were able to cut down a big fruit from the Gigantamax Snorlaxâs body and pass it on to Go and Scorbunny to make sure he jumps (just like earlier from Scorbunnyâs accidental fruit pick) for that fruit in time for the train to pass by without anyone getting hurt. It was a tough task getting all the way up to the belly of beast, but thanks the Double Kick boost Scorbunny gave that big fruit, Snorlax not only moved in time for the next train to stop by, but return back to normal (big) size.
Unfortunately, Scorbunny was also swallowed in that big gulp, but it was a good thing that Snorlax didnât munch it all the way. After the teamwork Go felt with Scorbunny during all that, he decides to modify his dream a bit and wants Scorbunny to now be his first PokĂ©mon catch. Both are happy to be with one another, and we all know this was going to be the start of wonderful friendship. With this addition to the group, the main cast for the new anime series is now fully-set. Let the true adventures around the PokĂ©mon world begin!
Some honorable mentionsâŠ
2019 for PokĂ©Ani marked an end of an era, but a start of a new one too! No doubt one of the most impactful years the show has had in the world since the XY&Z arc. Besides the historic Alola League, we also saw the continuation of Brock & Mistyâs trip to Alola (not to mention Brock & Oliviaâs adorkable interactions together), the classâ crash-course golf lessons with none other than Kahili! Ash catching a rare Meltan that appeared out of nowhere, The Sparkling Trio of Mallow, Lana & Lillie uniting as Alola DrinKyun (âRefreshing Trio: Alola Idolsâ in the English dub), Ash challenging Ryukiâs Kantonian Gym, the high-speed Vikavolt race, Mallowâs vision in opening her PokĂ©mon cafĂ©, Matoriâs unexpected visit to the Team Rocket base in Alola, and letâs not for get about the Ultra Guardians finishing up their final missions in capturing the remaining UBs: Pheromosa and Kartana. And honestly, after seeing all of Sun & Moon, can everyone just agree that Kukui is the BEST PokĂ©mon professor?!
Of course, how can I not mention the final episode of Sun & Moon? In what was probably one of the most emotional farewell episodes in the animeâs history. If you donât have bias from the original goodbye with Brock & Misty in Johto, this would probably be the best one. It was executed perfectly with Ashâs class figuring out what to do in the future with Ash himself not sure what to do moving forward. Naganadel had to return back to its homeworld, the Rockets had to say leave their Alola PokĂ©mon with Bewear as she sends them off one final time, Nebby returns to see Ash one final time, and Lillie decides to search for her father away from Alola after brining Magearna to life. With everyone deciding what to do, Ash heads back home to explore the world (which transitions to the new series) leaving all his Alola PokĂ©mon behind in Kukuiâs lab, while Rotom Dex decides to work for the Aether Foundation. The boat scene with Lillie was a good touch on how her character evolved thanks to Ashâs help, and the departing airport scene with Kukui, Burnet, and Ash group hugging was touching. Even Ash teared up as he gets in the air leaving Alola as his friends and PokĂ©mon he left behind wave goodbye. If that wasnât a good send off for the Sun & Moon series, Mallowâs Shaymin finally achieved its Sky Forme (which have her motherâs eyes...could be a touching symbolism that she was always watching her ;_;) from a Gracidea flower before taking off, AND ON TOP OF THAT, the final shot of the series no less, we find out that Professor Burnet is pregnant. Never in the history of this anime has ever done that to a major character in the supporting cast. The Sun & Moon series continues to break ground as one of the best PokĂ©mon series.
Other than that, we got the new series (which I still wish we had a proper sub-title for -_-) giving us a taste of what to expect in the new Generation VIII era. Our newly appointed research fellows, Ash & Go are at Professor Sakuragiâs Institute helping with his research along with Mimey and Koharu helping out with the household chores. Lugia brought these two together, and are now living under the same roof. And, can we talk about Mimey?! Iâm so glad a classic character from this anime is being used as a permanent supporting character for this series. Not to mention that he battled alongside Ash in the Hoenn tournament and won! Itâs also refreshing to see updated animation within Kanto where theyâre home base is at, and I absolutely cannot wait for them to go back to other regions with this fresh new art style. With Goâs goal to catch every PokĂ©mon there is for him to index, heâs bound to meet Mew again one day! Heâs literally every PokĂ©mon gamesâ protagonist and Iâm glad we have a main character like him who actually focuses on catching them all. As for Ash, heâs still our Ash carving his own unique path on his continuing journey to become a PokĂ©mon Master because itâs more than being the strongest trainer and more than just catching PokĂ©mon. Iâm going to take his word for it! I donât know if you noticed, but Go kinda looks up to him a bit due to his experiences in battle. Just look how shy he was just wanting to be his friend. You just gotta love it when they make Ash this mentor-type friend especially now coming off a huge victory in the Alola League becoming a champion.
Overall, the Sun & Moon anime gave us a variety of different set of stories every week leading up to the anticipated Alola League. Everyone had a story to tell building up to the Alola League, and just look at the list of episodes weâve had this year that went back and forth with characters that get a main focus other than Ash (or even Lillie). Most of these episodes Iâm talking about are either development for a PokĂ©mon in their team evolving, or a perfecting a Z-move with their respective Z-Crystals. This shows much the writers care about each main character gets enough screen-time before theyâre ready to take on the League with Ash. If you are still thinking on whether or not to continue/finish watching the series if you havenât yet, I would still recommend to please watch until the end! Itâs a really fun ride to sit through it all in my humble opinion, unless you want to just bolt straight into the League episodes only caring about Ashâs story. You do you. As for the new series, it will definitely pick up the pace sooner or later with the initial episodes are setting up to lead into something bigger. If you arenât hooked in yet, definitely be patient because Iâm expecting a lot of good opportunities for them to pull off in this cross-region based format. Sure it isnât based 100% on the latest games in the franchise Sword & Shield, but thatâs what separates the anime and the games. The anime is doing its own thing with an original story, but Iâm pretty sure they will mix-in some of the interesting storylines and feature important characters from Sword & Shield every time they revisit Galar because itâs the new region on the block. They should feature/market a lot of episodes from all the new content Galar has. So I would definitely still keep my eyes on the Pocket Monsters series đ
And there you have it! This post as long as it already is, so Iâll stop here. If youâve read everything I had to say (maybe a few typos here and there lol), then thank you for your time! Feel free share your own favorite PokĂ©Ani moment 2019 with a reblog or a reply if you choose to do so. Thanks so much for an amazing year, and itâs time for us to GO to 2020. More moments await for us, and maybe even some surprises we might see since Ash is returning to previous regions he already visited in the past. See everyone in 2020 for the first full year of the new âPocket Monstersâ series. Letâs go (with Go heh) and have some fun! Yes, I think used the word âgoâ here too many freakinâ times lol
Happy New Year to all my followers, and the rest of the Pokémon fandom!

Favorite Doctor/Companion Teams
Because I want to spread some Doctor Who good cheer for Christmas. Also, Iâm not doing the 9th or 13th doctor because theyâve really only had one team. Anyway...
1. The Original TeamÂ
The ones who started it all. They would win by iconography, but even with that, theyâre just a lot of fun to watch. This is the doctor at his most curmudgeon; heâs rude, fairly detached, and very much not the hero weâre use to. So they gave him a granddaughter who he cares for, and two teachers who act as the parents and honestly more noble, likable people.
Itâs a family dynamic, one which we donât see often. I appreciate that they were a team who grew to care for each other, but still had radically different approaches to whatever situation they found themselves in. And it is through this team up that the Doctor could mellow out and be a more straight up heroic figure. He learned from them just as much as the reverse.
2nd, Jamie, and ZoeÂ
Where the first team had a family dynamic to it, the second doctor had a more âbroâ relationship with his team. He and Jamie are famously close, and if Iâm not mistaken, Jamie is still one of the longest lasting companions. They joked around, had each others backs, and were just great pals. While Doctor Who was meant to be a teaching show, I believe these two turned the tone from edutainment into one full of Wonder.
As for Zoe, well I just like her. She was probably the first companion who could be considered of super intelligence. I like the Doctor and Jamie as two bros hanging out, but Zoe can be in there to keep everyone from getting along too well. Her intelligence could lead her to be smug, but she was truly loyal to the Tardis team. And I loved her interactions with Jamie as brother and sister.
3rd and Jo GrantÂ
I kind of like the Doctor with a ditzy companion. Despite not being remembered very well, I think Jo was able to occasionally pull her weight and she worked well with the Doctor. Plus their last scene together, when he says goodbye? Man, you could tell how sad that made not only them, but their actors as well.
4th and Sarah Jane
There were so many choices, but ultimately I canât help thinking of this one as the best. Not only is Sarah Jane still considered one of the best companions, her dynamic with the Doctor was one of equal love and exasperation. She would often debate with him, grow frustrated with him, but still be with him through some of the most terrifying threats any companion had to deal with. And when it was time to go, she took it with good grace; she would always remember her time with the Doctor fondly, and only asked that he do the same. Magical.
5th, Adric, Tegan, and NyssaÂ
Here we have the family dynamic back again. I just really like the Doctor acting like a mentor to Adric, with Tegan and Nyssa as best friends who act like the big sisters of the group. I feel that while the first Doctorâs family was a generational thing, with each passing something to the next, the fifth Doctorâs family was a group of siblings. They were kind of equals with each other, and they got into plenty of small arguments, constantly annoying each other, but with a kind of affection that made them want to be together even when they were mad.
I know itâs hard to write Doctor Who with more than 1 or 2 constant companions, but I personally like family dynamics the best. With the 2nd through 4th, there isnât a ton to say because they got on very well. There were disagreements sure, but for the most part, they were great friends and always happy with each other. A family dynamic, like with the fifth ensured a lot more dynamic back in forth bickering, with everyone's different backgrounds playing off each other in a way unique to Doctor Who, that could bring people from different timelines and planets together.
6th and Evelyn
Iâm going to cheat a bit by going off the grid into the audio dramas. No offense to Peri fans, but Evelyn is everything a companion should be. Tough, strongly opinionated, and incredibly empathetic, she provided a good foil to possibly the most selfish Doctor.
But what I loved most about her was that she was elderly. It provided a different dynamic to the Doctor, who occasionally acted the part of student to her mentor, instead of the usual status quo which is the reverse. Even more than that was her role in the story; she wasnât there to be a young companion who realizes her potential under the Doctor. She was there to show that even if your bones donât work like they use to. Even if youâre not most peopleâs ideal of good looking. Even if youâve lived a life full of joys and sorrows, youâre never too old to start over. To gain new experiences, new joys, new pains, and new love.
I think thatâs really beautiful.
7th and Ace
I struggled with if I wanted to add Bernice Summerfield to this team, because sheâs great. But then I realized so much of what I like about the 7th Doctor and Ace works when they are a two person team.
The 7th Doctor is believed to be the most manipulative, actively using his own loved ones for the greater good. He can be cold and calculating in a way few other Doctors ever approached. And so that made his relationship with Ace all the more heartwarming. Here was this little delinquent of a girl, who thought she was worthless, and yet she was the only person in the universe who could bend the 7th Doctor to her whim; he loved her like a daughter, and the scenes where they interact is all the more special when you contrast them with the cold Doctor.
Having another companion kind of intrudes on this very intimate bond. I think Ace should be special to this Doctor. The one person who he would sacrifice himself before he sacrificed her. A companion who can be horrified with his more manipulative acts, but nevertheless stuck with him out of a loyalty to the first person who ever took a chance on her. Hurt Ace at your peril; the 7th Doctor will come for you.
8th and Izzy (plus Fey)Â
Ignore that Izzyâs a fish, she isnât usually.
This one is pure nostalgia. The 8th Doctorâs comic strip adventures were my first real introduction to the WHO-niverse. So while Iâm sure Izzy is probably last on most peopleâs list (if they know her at all), sheâll always be my companion. She was probably the first pop-culture savvy companion who could offer a quip that stumped even the Doctor with how contemporary it was. She was finding herself on her journey with the Doctor, and had a character arc that I think inspired RTD when it was his time to reboot the series. Plus, from what Iâve read of other 8th Doctor material, he tends to be romantically linked with most of his other companions. Some people might like that, but I think you can tell from this list, I like my Doctor as a more celibate fellow.
Fey is someone who I think of as an intermittent companion. She helps out the Doctor a great deal, and her position within the universe is very unique and imaginative, but I wouldnât want her in for more than a story arc or two at a time before moving on to another spatial-temporal James Bond style adventure.
10th and Donna
Like the fourth Doctor before him, I had plenty of options. I was even gonna pull a fast one and pick another comic strip companion, the self-centered businesswoman Majenta Pryce. But the 10th Doctor and Donna are special.
Not only is she one of the only companions the Doctor has called his best friend, when you get down to it, she was who he needed at the time. After the last two companions had ended in a sort of tragic romance, the Doctor was walling himself off again. Donna, however, came into his life as purely a friend. Someone to pal around with and banter with. For the Doctor, this must have been a godsend. No drama, no hassle, just true companionship in every since of the word. And she still has possibly the saddest exit for any companion to date.
Goodbye Donna Noble. You definitely lived up to the name.
11th, Amy, and Rory (plus River Song)Â
The last family companionship on this list, and quite honestly, my favorite Tardis dynamic in the whole series. Why? Because itâs such a glorious mess that should collapse in flames but becomes something thatâs just so interesting to think about.
The Doctor was Amyâs childhood crush she never quite got over. She eventually grew to love Rory, but both she and the Doctor were kind of dismissive of him. But does Rory angst and get into a love rivalry with the Doctor? Not really. He grows into himself, faces numerous dangers for them both, and by the end both Amy and the Doctor love the guy to pieces. And then you have River Song, who should turn the whole thing into a kind of Jerry Springer prize winner. I wonât go into spoilers, but what could have seemed creepy is actually a very interesting relationship with the Doctor. Though like Fey above, I think she works best as an intermittent companion who often goes off on her own adventures.
Still, they are the best family and if thatâs controversial, it is the hill I will die on.
12th and Clara
The final companions are another friendship. In a lot of ways, this is pretty fun, because the 12th Doctor is an old curmudgeon like the first. But with all that heâs been through, it is interesting to see how they contrasts, especially in their companions. Because while the 1st Doctor was happy to play the cranky grandfather type, 12th had a genuine friendship with Clara.
They didnât always get each other. They frequently disagreed, and could even be resentful. But when the chips were down, they would follow each other into hell together. The Doctor always tried to be a little more considerate for her than most others around him, and Clara tried to defend him against his critics. And while the end to their companionship could have been handled better, it was still an impactful parting between two friends.
So do you agree or disagree? Who are your favorite teams? I would love to know.

Have You Read This? The Election of 2020
Like many of us, I watched Hamilton on July 4th, 2020 â our nationâs birthday. I met the day with mixed emotions as the spirit and character of our nation as of late did not seem appropriate to celebrate.
As I watched the story about many of the nationâs founding fathers and first leaders unfold, I was struck by the parts of their personal trials and tribulations that went beyond their contribution to the nation. Hamilton was the first politician to be involved in a sex scandal; Layfette â an immigrant, unafraid to step in and become Americaâs favorite fighting Frenchmen; Washington â a slave owner willing to admit âit probable that I may have committed many errors;â Jefferson â gained wealth profiting from the work of slaves, one of which he fathered six children with after making her his mistress. Burr â the untried murderer of Alexander Hamilton, whom he killed while still holding office as the third Vice President of the United States. In short, a hot mess of moral contradictions. I have been listening to the Hamilton soundtrack ever since my first viewing on July 4th, and realized a number of lines in various songs could be strung together to reflect my perception (key word: my) of the current political climate. Over the last week or so, I finally sat down to string all of those poignant lines together (with a few liberties for relevant context), a lyrical short story I have dubbed, The Election of 2020 (seen further down, further down). The beauty of democracy that is reborn during election seasons is our ability to get a fresh start, gain new perspectives, correct past wrongs, and continually better this land of the free for generations to come. I saw a quote recently that described voting as not so much like trying to find the perfect partner for marriage, but rather like using a bus for public transport. Voting is a map of bus routes that you must choose from in order to get from point A to point B. There may not be one specific bus that is going to your exact destination, but that doesnât mean you stay at home and give up on travel entirely. Voting is not about waiting for âthe oneâ candidate who is absolutely perfect. Instead, you choose to get on the bus that gets you closest to where you want to be. I know and love many republicans and democrats that have used the privilege of voting to get us all closer to where we want the nation to be. To me, where we are right now does not seem to fit under either traditional party umbrella â no, itâs much more like an umbrella that has been turned inside out and torn apart by a calculated hurricane of divisive and selfish endeavors. Perhaps more than ever before, this is the time to reassess our voting bus routes that will get us from point A to point B. Are we moving from indifference to tolerance? Hate to love? Despair to hope? Chaos to consistency? Negligence to protection? Moreover, before you get on your bus of choice, remember the route is designed to get the whole of our nation where we want it to be. Not just for me and not just for you. For all of US â as in, all of the United States. We will never all agree, I know this, but in spite of these disagreements, I am reminded of the hope that comes from the story of Hamilton. Even 244 years into this nationâs story, despite many dramatic peaks and valleys, the journey to our shared, happily ever after epilogue lives on. It lives on in me, in you, and in every vote cast to get us where we want to be. Regardless of how your vote is cast, the courage to reexamine your route and get on that bus⊠well, that would be enough.
The Election of 2020
âAmerica, you great unfinished symphony A place where even orphan immigrants Can leave their fingerprints and rise up Weâre running out of time Eyes up Time's up Wise up He's not the choice I would have gone with History will prove him wrong Winning was easy for him Governing's harder Welcome, folks, to a dysfunctional administration! He stands only for himself It's what he does I can't apologize because it's true Have it all, lose it all The President is gonna bring the nation to the brink Heâs the villain in our history Frankly, it's a little disquieting that so many are blind to this reality He doesnât have an ounce of regret He accumulates debt, he accumulates power Yet in our hour of need, he forgets Ardently abuses his post It's hard to listen to him with a straight face Watching the tension grow He cannot be left alone to his devices Indecisive, from crisis to crisis Stay alive 'til this horror show is past We're gonna fly a lot of flags half-mast Chaos and bloodshed already haunt us How many died because he was inexperienced and ruinous? We're too fragile to start another fight Where do we draw the line? Someone oughta remind him We're running a real nation Him and his words, obsessed with his own legacy His sentences border on senseless And he is paranoid in every paragraph How they perceive him Let future historians wonder How he tore so much apart And watched it all burn I wish I could say what was happening in his brain He's not very forthcoming on any particular stances Ask him a question: he glances off, he obfuscates, he dances I will not equivocate on my opinion I didn't say anything that wasn't true His father's a scoundrel, and so, it seems, is this dude He is uniquely situated by virtue of his position Though 'virtue' is not a word Iâd apply to this situation He seeks financial gain, straying from his sacred mission And the evidence suggests heâs engaged in speculation Why does he assume heâs the smartest in the room? Soon that attitude will be his doom He knows nothing of loyalty Smells like new money, dresses like fake royalty Desperate to rise above his station Everything he does betrays the ideals of our nation See how he lies Look at his eyes Follow the scent of his enterprise If we don't stop him, we aid and abet it Watching him grabbin' at power and kissin' it Somebody has to stand up to his mouth What do we stall for? If we stand for nothing, what'll we fall for?
Be careful with that one He will do what it takes to survive No one knows who he is or what he does His pride will be the death of us all God, we hope heâs satisfied This man has poisoned our political pursuits Destroyed our reputation I can almost see the headline, his âcareerâ is done Ya best go run back where ya come from! This dude is out! You ever see somebody ruin their own life? History obliterates In every picture it paints It paints him and all of his mistakes It's him against us, the world will never be the same He better get ready for the moment of adrenaline Try not to crack under the stress When he finally faces his opponent Theyâve fought on like seventy-five different fronts He smacks others in the press and doesnât print retractions We're breaking down like fractions But when all is said and all is done I have beliefs, he has none Gotta get us out of the mess heâs got us in Thereâs a reason no one trusts him No one knows what he believes I get no satisfaction witnessing his fits of passion The way he primps and preens and dresses like the pits of fashion Our poorest citizens, our farmers, live ration to ration As Wall Street robs 'em blind in search of chips to cash in Heâs askin' for someone to bring him to task While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket But the sun comes up And the world still spins I hear wailing in the streets There is suffering too terrible to name This is not a moment, it's a movement Are we a nation of states? What's the state of our nation? The issue on the table: We are engaged in a battle for our nation's very soul Iâm past patiently waitin'. Letâs passionately smash every expectation For the first time, Iâm thinkin' past tomorrow. We're gonna rise up - time to take a shot This nation better rise up Raise a glass to freedom Something they can never take away No matter what he tells us Look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now But we'll never be truly free Until those in bondage have the same rights as you and me Seek out injustice in the world and correct it Life doesn't discriminate Between the sinners And the saints It takes and it takes and it takes And we keep living anyway We laugh and we cry And we break But can l be real for a second? For just a millisecond? We gotta make an all-out stand Get him out of power So he holds no office We are a powder keg about to explode We gotta stop 'em and rob 'em of his advantages Let's take a stand with the stamina God has granted us We pick and choose our battles and places to take a stand We will fight for this land Summon all the courage thatâs required Be a part of the narrative The story they will write someday How we emerged victorious Leaving the battlefield waving Betsy Ross' flag higher No one has more resilience Letâs move under cover and move as one We have one shot to live another day Donât throw away this shot We will fight up close, seize the moment and stay in it And so the American experiment begins again We bleed and fight for the next generation We'll make it right for them If we lay a strong enough foundation We'll pass it on to them, we'll give the world to them For a strong central democracy We may never all agree, but There's only one man and woman Who can give us a command so we can rise up Throwing verbal rocks at his mediocrities What do you stall for? What was it all for? We studied and we fought For the notion of a nation we now get to rebuild Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness We fought for these ideals; we shouldn't settle for less I don't pretend to know All the challenges weâre facing But this once, take a stand with pride This is not the time to stand to the side Stand with us in the land of the free To get the people that we need to lead We need the votes We need bold strokes When thereâs skin in the game, stay in the game We don't get a win unless we play in the game We may get love for it We may get hate for it We get nothing if we wait for it I wanna build something that's gonna outlive me I dream of a brand new start I want real leaders that can save the day We won't be invisible We won't be denied If we get this right The nation can start to move on It outlives us when weâre gone We are the one thing in life we can control We are inimitable, true originals We canât stand still Or lie in wait We don't wanna fight, but We won't apologize for doing what's right Together we can turn the tide If we manage to get this right They'll surrender by early light We have no control Who lives, who dies, who tells our story But I know that we can win I know that greatness lies within us But remember from here on in History has its eyes on me and History has its eyes on youâ
