In April 2021, an Ohio teenager was apprehended after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase one Friday afternoon on Interstate 75 through Sumter and Marion counties near the Villages.

Cody James Russell, of Miamisburg, Ohio, described as having a "clean cut appeaance" was at the wheel of a stolen black Dodge Durango with Ohio plates at 4:25 p.m. Friday, April 16, northbound near Mile Marker 322 in Sumter County when his fast-moving vehicle began kicking up debris from the side of the roadway causing a hazard for other motorists, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A patrol car from FHP pursued the vehicle into Marion County at a speed of 115 miles per hour where the Dodge Durango left I-75 at Exit 341 and began to travel in the wrong direction on County Road 484. Russell subsequently turned onto County Road 475A where he lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree.

Russell began running after exiting the vehicle and lost his shoes.

A Marion County Sheriff’s Office K-9 joined in the hunt for Russell. After he was captured, he was taken back to the crash scene where he was positively identified by the FHP trooper who had initiated the chase.

Law enforcement confirmed that the Dodge Durango had been stolen in Montgomery County, Ohio. It had a license plate that had been assigned to a 1997 Toyota Avalon.

Russell was arrested on multiple charges including grand theft auto. He was already on probation. He was booked without bond at the Sumter County Detention Center.

Russell spent the next 14 months in county jail before being transferred to custody in Ohio to take care of some other matters. Two months later he was transferred to Florida DOC control.

Grand Theft Auto VI is an upcoming action-adventure game in development by Rockstar Games. It is due to be the eighth main Grand Theft Auto game, following Grand Theft Auto V (2013), and the sixteenth entry overall. Earlier today, we learned that Take-Two Interactive, the company-publisher behind the Grand Theft Auto series, had closed Rollerdrome studio Roll7 and Kerbal Space Program 2 studio Intercept Games. Both of those games, and many others including the recently released No Rest for the Wicked, were published by Private Division, an indie-publishing arm under Take-Two.

Now, in a new update from GamesIndustry.biz, the publication reports that Take-Two has shuttered the “vast majority” of Private Division’s teams in Seattle, New York, Las Vegas, and Munich, according to one of its sources. When GamesIndustry.biz reached out to Take-Two for confirmation, the company issued the same statement that can be read in Game Informer’s original story below.

Original story, 9:48 a.m., May 2, 2024:

Take-Two Interactive, the company behind games like Grand Theft Auto V that also acquired mobile giant Zynga in 2022 in the second-biggest deal in games history, has closed Roll7 and Intercept Games, the studios behind Rollerdrome and Kerbal Space Program 2, respectively. After a report from GameDeveloper.com indicated Take-Two was laying off 70 people at Intercept Games, Bloomberg released a report confirming that Take-Two was shuttering both Intercept Games and Roll7. 

The publication reports that Take-Two is closing the London-based Roll7 and offering severance to staff. A notice filed with the Washington State Employment Security Department indicates that Take-Two is planning to close a Seattle-based studio with 70 employees, which aligns with Intercept Games’ employee count and location.

While Take-Two hasn’t yet addressed the closures, it gave the following statement to IGN regarding the layoffs and the status of Kerbal Space Program 2, which launched into Early Access last year. 

“On April 16, Take-Two announced a cost reduction program to identify efficiencies across its business and to enhance the Company’s margin profile while still investing for growth. As part of these efforts, the Company is rationalizing its pipeline and eliminating several projects in development and streamlining its organization structure, which will eliminate headcount and reduce future hiring needs. The company is not providing additional details. 

“On April 18, Private Division successfully launched Moon Studio’s No Rest for the Wicked. The label continues to make updates to Kerbal Space Program 2 and plans to release Wētā Workshop Game Studio’s Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings game in the second half of 2024.” 

These closures arrive roughly a month after Take-Two announced it was laying off 5% (579 employees) at its various companies while canceling projects in the works. The publisher also acquired Gearbox Entertainment in late March. Roll7 won a BAFTA award for Rollerdrome last year and also developed 2022’s OlliOlli World.

After being heavily rumored, Microsoft has now announced a new Xbox Developer Direct that will take place on January 18 at 12pm PT / 3pm ET / 8pm GMT.

MSI unveils new handheld PC device, the Claw

During the CES 2024 show, MSI revealed the Claw, its new PC handheld device.

As reported by The Verge, the PC manufacturer intends to release three units ranging from $699 to $799. A base model will ship with 512GB of memory storage.

Fortnite playtime on consoles last month topped Call of Duty, EA Sports FC, GTA 5 and Roblox combined

Console users reportedly spent over 1.6 billion hours playing Fortnite in December 2023.

The total is greater than the combined amount of time console owners spent playing Call of Duty HQ (Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone), EA Sports FC 24, Grand Theft Auto V/Online and Roblox last month, according to research firm Ampere Analysis.

Steam pages will now disclose which games use AI-generated content

Valve has published new guidelines for developers looking to release games on the platform, including new rules regarding the use of AI-generated content, specifically targeting copyright-infringing material.

“We are updating the Content Survey that developers fill out when submitting to Steam. The survey now includes a new AI disclosure section, where you’ll need to describe how you are using AI in the development and execution of your game,” reads a post on Steam.

As part of these guidelines, Valve says it will separate AI use into two “broad categories.”

ByteDance confirms it is in talks to sell games business

TikTok owner ByteDance has confirmed it is currently in discussions to sell its video games operations.

The confirmation comes via South China Morning Post, which reported the company is in talks with a range of potential buyers, including the world's biggest games firm Tencent, although no agreement has been reached yet.

Reports that ByteDance was planning to sell its gaming arm Nuverse have been circulating since November, shortly after it was reported the company was planning to sell Mobile Legends: Bang Bang developer Moonton Technology.

Hey mod if you are a death battle fan what is your tough about the death battle symbol hints for season 10

//I've just sort of had a look at it now, and here's how I'm looking at it, but I think each symbol represents the upcoming episodes, and is a hint to what we might be getting. So here's what I think:

The atom refers to, obviously, the premiere episode of The Atom vs Ant Man.

The Crossing Swords probably refers to Chosen Undead (Dark Souls) vs Dragonborn (Elder Scrolls) which is another confirmed episode.

Question mark I'm not too sure about, I do however think it could refer to Bill Cipher (Gravity Falls) vs Discord (My Little Pony) which was also confirmed.

The last confirmed episode, Alex Mercer (Prototype) Vs Cole MacGrath (inFamous) I think could be the Yin and Yang symbol, but I'm not sure. It could just as easily be the scales.

The Dollar Sign symbol could mean more than one thing. It could be referring to bank heist matchup, like Grand Theft Auto Vs Payday or something, or it could be symbolic of money-obsessed characters from other media, like Scrooge McDuck or Mr Krabs (Not a matchup I expect because it's very one-sided in my eyes)

Lotus Flower makes me think we might get some kind of Mortal Kombat Vs Avatar battle, since both franchises have a faction named after a Lotus. Maybe Liu Kang Vs whoever the Bloodbender bad guy from Korra is.

The Skull and Crossbones either refers to pirates or characters who use poison.

The Star is either the Jostar Star, or Captain America's Star. For matchups, I think we could get JoJo Vs Persona 5 for the former, or Marvel Vs Rising of the Shield Hero or something.

I think the Recycle symbol may be referencing Captain Planet. I don't know who his opponent would be, but I don't see it being anything else.

Going back to the scales, I really really really want this to possibly be referring to Ace Attorney Vs Danganronpa. While I'm not expecting most reasonable matchups to win against Phoenix given that he's already in 2 fighting game series, I still want to see it. It could also be referring to heroes with a strong focus on justice, so maybe Judge Dread Vs Punisher or something?

The Half Circle I'm not too sure about, but I think it could be referring to the moon. In that instance I think it could be implying RWBY, Assassination Classroom or Soul Eater. With RWBY Volume 9 now being over and done with, I think we'll almost certainly get a RWBY matchup at some point.

The man in a suit makes me theorize two things. It could be a secret agent face off, but we already had that last season with John Wick Vs James Bond. My personal theory is it could be, going back to JoJo vs Persona, Yoshikage Kira Vs Tohru Adachi.

The Pentagram could also be Bill Vs Discord, but it could be referencing many different franchises, namely Hellboy, Shin Megami Tensei, Devil May Cry.

The lab bottle makes me think of some scientific battle, but there's so many scientists in media, I wouldn't know where to begin.

The wave is definitely referring to some sort of sea battle, possibly something like Kyogre vs Chaos (Pokemon Vs Sonic) but I have no idea where to start with this.

2022 Gaming Wrap-Up

   What a year, huh? 2022 has had everything from international invasions and stubborn diseases to countless celebrities making a joke of themselves and more superhero shows than anyone asked for. It was basically impossible to predict what was coming next, but if one thing is for sure, the world of video game culture had an absolute banger of a year - long-anticipated sequels, several film and TV adaptations, and what seems to be the hundredth GTA 5 re-release. As we gear up for an exciting new year with plenty of promising upcoming releases, let’s take a moment to look back at 2022 and figure out just what was going on in that mess.

JANUARY-MARCH    The year was off to a rocky start, with the announcement that E3 would once again be cancelled due to COVID concerns. These last three years have been rough for the world’s biggest gaming convention; 2020 saw the first-ever cancellation in 25 years, 2021 featured an online-only version of the event, and now it’s been cancelled for the second time. Thankfully, the Entertainment Software Association that hosts E3 stated that they planned to re-open the event for 2023, but time will tell if that remains possible by then.   In brighter news, the Steam Deck was released in February, a handheld platform for on-the-go access to Steam’s entire gaming library. Just keep an eye on the battery life - you’ll likely get only an hour or two of God of War before it hits the red. The first three months of the year also featured the release of some highly-anticipated new games: Horizon: Forbidden West continued the award-winning story of Zero Dawn, Kirby and the Forgotten Land brought a return to the cute and occasionally terrifying Dream Land, and the long-awaited Elden Ring dominated sales as the year’s best-selling title.

APRIL-JUNE    After a hectic start to the year, things slowed down a little in the second quarter. A handful of smaller events were held in lieu of E3, starting with the Summer Games Fest, including announcements for The Callisto Protocol and Goat Simulator 3. The second Sonic the Hedgehog film was also released to positive reception, while the Halo series on Paramount+ was released to…much less positivity. It appears that video game adaptations are still hit-or-miss, but at least we’ve improved since the old 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie. We don’t talk about that one.   Back to the actual games, Diablo Immortal was released in June; while it was a passably decent mobile game, it also serves as an early example of the worrying trend of microtransactions coming from Blizzard Entertainment. With extremely predatory (and concerningly effective) pay-to-win mechanics, Immortal continues to push Blizzard into their downward spiral that began last year. They’ve come a long way since the days where they were once at the height of the respected developers list, and their chances of clawing their way back up seem grim. At least LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and The Quarry brought some much-appreciated quality to this month’s games library.

JULY-SEPTEMBER    Video game history was made at the start of the year’s second half, with the biggest leak ever: Grand Theft Auto 6. That’s right, after 9 whole years since the original release of GTA 5, we finally have concrete confirmed proof of a sequel, all thanks to a devastating leak revealing a massive new open-world map and over an hour of early gameplay. Rockstar Games confirmed the validity of the 90+ leaked videos, and went on to say that while it would not impact the game’s development, they were extremely disappointed by their hard work being revealed by some random hacker. Leaks may be fun and exciting for the fans, but developers keep things under wraps for a reason!   Back beyond the controllers, another game adaptation was started in September: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a Netflix anime series based on Cyberpunk 2077. It was met with near-universal praise, exploring the dangerous streets of Night City in a way that the game never did with unique characters and a compelling new story. It’s a bright sign for video game adaptations, and here’s hoping it opens the way for more high-quality game series. For those that prefer the games themselves, the adorably demonic Cult of the Lamp took the roguelike genre by storm, Stray told a fascinating story through the eyes of a cute little kitty, and Splatoon 3 quickly jumped to the top of millions of Switch players’ libraries within days of release.

OCTOBER-DECEMBER    Things always seem to ramp up in the gaming community towards the end of the year, with plenty of major new releases on top of the Game Awards that were held in early December. Two of the year’s biggest releases came out around this time; God of War: Ragnarok, the climactic follow-up to Kratos’ 2018 Norse adventure, and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet bringing one of the world’s largest franchises to its’ next generation. The massive RPG Elden Ring managed to topple the competition as 2023’s Game of the Year, while Splatoon 3 won a well-deserved Best Multiplayer Game.   Additionally, October saw the release of DC’s open-world RPG Gotham Knights, bringing co-op to the beloved Arkham series but falling short on matching its’ iconic combat mechanics. Meanwhile, Overwatch 2 launched with fun new gameplay held back by yet more of Blizzard’s monetization schemes. The bizarre combination of Super Mario with the chaotic Rabbids returned with Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and the hair-raising survival horror of The Callisto Protocol hit the best-selling list within a week of release. Overall, the end of the year looks to be full of all kinds of exciting games, a perfect way to spend the holidays as 2022 draws to a close.

LOOKING FORWARDS    With 2022 almost over, it’s time to make those new year’s resolutions and set our sights on the future. 2023 already has quite a few exciting new releases planned, like Spider-Man 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. On top of that, two games will be getting the silver screen adaptation treatment, including The Last of Us being turned into a HBO series starring the Mandalorion himself, Pedro Pascal, as Joel Miller. The animated Super Mario Bros. Movie also has a newly-revealed release date for April, with absolutely beautiful visuals that will faithfully bring all your favourite Mario levels straight to the big screen. If things go according to plan, we’ll also be back at E3 in 2023 after the convention’s spotty attendance in the last three years, so get ready to scramble for those tickets.

  2023 looks to be following the welcome trend of great singleplayer gaming still going strong - it’s not all about online multiplayer these days despite what it might seem, and I for one am very glad to keep playing solo all year long if I can. Grand Theft Auto VI

Grand Theft Auto VI is an upcoming action-adventure game in development by Rockstar Games. It is due to be the eighth main Grand Theft Auto game, following Grand Theft Auto V (2013), and the sixteenth entry overall. Set within the fictional open world state of Leonida (based on Florida) and its Miami-inspired Vice City, the story is expected to follow criminal duo Lucia and her male partner.[a]

Following years of speculation and anticipation, Rockstar confirmed in February 2022 that the game was in development. That September, footage from unfinished versions was leaked online in what journalists described as one of the biggest leaks in the history of the video game industry. The game was formally revealed in December 2023 and is scheduled to be released in 2025 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Setting and characters

Grand Theft Auto VI is an action-adventure game set in the fictional open world state of Leonida—based on Florida—which includes Vice City, a fictional version of Miami.[1][2][3] Vice City was previously featured in Grand Theft Auto (1997) and as the main setting of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (2006).[4][5][6] The game world parodies contemporary American culture, with satirical depictions of social media and influencer culture, and references to Internet memes such as the Florida Man.[7][8][9] The story follows a criminal duo: Lucia, the series' first female protagonist since 2000,[b] and her male partner;[a] the first trailer depicts Lucia as a prison inmate, and later evading custody with her partner.[2][16]

Development

Following Grand Theft Auto V's 2013 release, Rockstar North's then-president Leslie Benzies said the company had "some ideas" for the series' next entry.[17] In 2018, The Know reported the game, code-named Project Americas, would be set primarily in Vice City and partly in South America with a female protagonist.[18] In 2020, journalist Jason Schreier reported the game was "early in development" as "a moderately sized release" that would expand over time, to avoid its predecessors' developer crunch.[19] In 2021, Tom Henderson claimed the game's map could evolve akin to Fortnite Battle Royale.[20][21] In 2022, Schreier reported the game entered development in 2014 and would feature two Bonnie and Clyde-inspired protagonists, including a Latina woman, and claimed the developers were cautiously subverting the series' trend of joking about marginalised groups.[22][23]

The game became highly anticipated in the years before its announcement,[24][25][26] and journalists noted some fans became frustrated by Rockstar Games's continued silence, particularly after they announced a re-release of Grand Theft Auto V in 2020.[27][28][29] An individual referencing the game received media attention for interrupting several live stage and television shows.[30][31][32] On 4 February 2022, Rockstar confirmed development was "well underway".[33] In July, Rockstar announced Red Dead Online would not receive more major updates as development resources were withdrawn to focus on the upcoming game;[34] industry sources stated Rockstar reallocated resources after planned remasters of Grand Theft Auto IV (2008) and Red Dead Redemption (2010) were paused due to the backlash received by Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition (2021).[35]

In November 2023, Rockstar president Sam Houser announced the first trailer would release in early December to celebrate the company's 25th anniversary.[36][37] Within five hours, the announcement on X surpassed two previous posts about the game to become the platform's most-liked gaming-related post,[38][39][40] later surpassed by Rockstar's post announcing the trailer's 5 December release date, with 1.8 million likes in 24 hours.[41] Other developers imitated the announcement's formatting to promote their trailers.[42][43][15] On 4 December, a low-quality version of the trailer was leaked on X; in response, Rockstar published the official version on YouTube, revealing the title, protagonists, setting, and release window of 2025 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.[44][45][46] No Windows version was announced.[46][47] The trailer broke the record for most first-day views on a non-music YouTube video within 12 hours, with 46 million,[48][49] became the third-most overall within 24 hours with 93 million,[50][51][52] and surpassed the lifetime viewership of Grand Theft Auto V's 2011 reveal trailer within two days with 101 million.[53] Its featured song, Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road", saw a near-37,000% increase in Spotify streams, had almost 250,000 searches on Shazam, and ranked second on the worldwide iTunes chart.[54]

September 2022 leak

On 18 September 2022, a user known as "teapotuberhacker"[c] published 90 videos to GTAForums showing 50 minutes of work-in-progress game footage.[57] Schreier confirmed with sources at Rockstar that the footage was genuine,[58] and The Guardian reported it was from several stages of development,[57] with some videos about a year old.[4] The footage revealed a modern-day Vice City setting, contained animation and gameplay tests, level layouts, and character conversations, and depicted player characters Lucia and Jason entering a strip club and robbing a diner.[4][14] The hacker claimed to be behind the Uber security breach from the earlier week.[58][59] They said they downloaded the files directly from Rockstar's internal Slack groups,[60] and claimed to possess source code, assets, and internal builds of Grand Theft Auto V and VI, which they threatened to publish.[58]

Rockstar's parent company Take-Two Interactive responded by submitting takedowns of videos showing or discussing the leaks hosted on YouTube,[57][61] and contacted GTAForums and Reddit moderators to remove access.[62] The hacker wrote they were "looking to negotiate a deal" with Rockstar or Take-Two.[63] Journalists described the event as one of the biggest leaks in video game history;[64][65][66] Schreier called it "a nightmare for Rockstar Games" which could limit employees' remote work flexibility.[67][68] Jefferies analyst Andrew Uerkwitz called it a "PR disaster" that could potentially delay the game and diminish staff morale, but was unlikely to impact reception or sales.[69][70] The Guardian noted the leaked footage was being widely criticised "by ill-informed users" due to its quality, despite not being representative of the final product.[57] Some users erroneously claimed graphics and art assets are finalised early in game development. In solidarity, several developers shared work-in-progress footage of their games[71][72][73] and some, including Cliff Bleszinski, Neil Druckmann, Rami Ismail, and Alanah Pearce, offered sympathies to Rockstar.[4][57][74]

On 19 September, Rockstar confirmed the leak to be a "network intrusion" and lamented how the game was first demonstrated but did not anticipate long-term effects on development.[75] They disabled comments and replies on their social media accounts in the days following the leak.[56] Take-Two added that steps had been taken "to isolate and contain this incident".[69] Take-Two's share price dropped by more than six per cent in pre-market trading that day,[69][70] but recovered during regular trading hours following their statement.[76] Uber acknowledged the potential links to their security breach and noted they were working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Department of Justice. They believed the hacker was affiliated with the group Lapsus$, which was thought to have breached companies such as Microsoft, Nvidia, and Samsung over the preceding year.[77][78] Zelnick said no material assets appeared to have been taken and the incident caused the companies to become more vigilant with cybersecurity.[79] He later reiterated the leak had impacted staff emotionally but business remained unaffected.[80]

A 17-year-old boy from Oxfordshire—claimed to be "teapotuberhacker"—was arrested by City of London Police on 22 September as part of an investigation supported by the National Cyber Crime Unit and American federal law enforcement.[81][82][83] The suspect is a key member of Lapsus$ who was previously arrested under suspicion of hacking several other companies.[77][84][85] Appearing before the Highbury Corner Youth Court, he pleaded guilty to two counts of breach of bail conditions and not guilty to two counts of computer misuse.[84][86][87] The case was referred to a higher court while the boy was remanded to a youth detention centre.[87][83] In mid-2023, he stood trial at Southwark Crown Court for twelve offences, including six counts of computer misuse, three of blackmail, and two of fraud.[85][88] Prosecutors alleged he threatened to release the source code in a message to all Rockstar staff on Slack and had targeted other companies like BT Group, Nvidia, Revolut, and Uber.[88][89][90] He was deemed unfit to stand trial; instead of assessing his guilt, a jury determined he had committed the acts, and he was set to be sentenced by a judge.[85][91]

After teasing the it would be releasing a trailer in early December about a month ago, Rockstar confirmed an exact date and time this morning. The trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto will premiere Tuesday December 5 at 9 a.m. ET.

Rockstar shared the tweet above without any context, so it’s worth noting that it is technically not confirming that this trailer will be for the next Grand Theft Auto. All it says is “Trailer 1” and a date. But, considering its early November tease explicitly read, “We are very excited to let you know that in early December, we will release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto,” it’s safe to assume that this is what the tweet is referencing.

The art of the tweet also offers the first official tease for the game’s tropical setting. It has long been rumored that the next Grand Theft Auto would return to Vice City and a massive leak in September where 90 video related to the game also made that apparent.

If you’re on a video game website reading about Grand Theft Auto, it’s safe to assume that the excitement surrounding this game does not need to contextualized, but the previous Grand Theft Auto is one of the video game industry’s biggest hits of all time.
