era esperado que graham sorrisse para quem se aproximasse do balcão, mas era raro quando retribuíam. ali, viu a oportunidade perfeita para iniciar uma conversa e, quem sabe, se vincular a alguém da cidade. seu disfarce ficaria cada vez mais realista se tivesse amigos, afinal. "o melhor, mh? tenho a escolha perfeita pra você." se virou para a prateleira de bebidas como já tivesse feito aquilo milhares de vezes. entre os whiskies disponíveis, fez questão de escolher servir seu favorito. "aproveite essa belezinha."

Tendo um dia cheio de trabalho na cafeteria, Grant tomou a ideia de fazer o mesmo proveito pra ter um descanso e lá estava ele no bar de Graham. Ele não conhecia o cara novo na cidade, mas não se importava em dar uma chance para se aproximar de alguém, ainda mais que o ex-fuzileiro já tinha passado por esse mesmo sentimento. Ao entrar no bar, sentou de frente pro balcão e sorriu para o outro — Hoje eu vou ficar por conta de um copo de uísque, o melhor que tiver. — respondeu, colocando a jaqueta no colo.

Horror novel recommendations

@allthestoriescantbelies​ asked for horror novel recommendations, so I thought I’d throw one together to post on the blog! Largely focused on non-gothic stuff since I’ve already made a gothic lit list over here.

As a general warning, all horror books listed here will have potentially triggering material. If you want more specific trigger warnings, you can ask me or see if people have listed them on goodreads or storygraph.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix: I know you’ve read this, but I’m putting it on the list because it is one of the scariest books I’ve ever read, about a teenage girl in trouble and the only other girl willing to help her. I’m told the movie makes it much more straightforwardly comic rather than horror-with-jokes, which disappoints me. I’m a big fan of Hendrix in general, though I know you (and plenty of others!) find him hit-or-miss.

Red Dragon by Thomas Harris: Another one I believe you’ve read, but for reference, it’s the best serial killer thriller I’ve ever read. Francis Dolarhyde is a much more interesting character than Hannibal Lecter, I will die on this hill.

We Will All Go Down Together by Gemma Files: Centuries ago, the Five Family Coven made a deal with the Fairy Queen, and their descendants have been doomed ever since. I could have just as easily recommended Files’ book Experimental Film- if you like one, read the other as well.

The Drowning Girl by Caitlin R. Kiernan: A schizophrenic woman has two different memories of her ex-girlfriend and the horror that followed her- was she a werewolf, a mermaid, or were both memories wrong? This is Kiernan at her most heartfelt and most accessible; if you like this and want to try her grosser stuff, read The Very Best of Caitlin R. Kiernan.

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski: A haunted house in a haunted film in a haunted memoir, written in a work of visual art. I won’t blame anyone who bounces off this, but give it a try!

Carrie by Stephen King: If you’re only going to read one Stephen King, make it either Carrie or Misery. I don’t feel like any film adaptations have captured all the aspects of this tragedy about a girl who deserved a better life and the town who didn’t save her while there was still a chance, including the epistolary format.

Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant: This novella was followed up by Into the Drowning Deep, but I found Rolling in the Deep much scarier. It’s brisk and high-tension to watch a semi-fake documentary team put together, piece by piece, just what the monsters are that pursue them.

Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge: The Great Pumpkin, but scary! Seriously, though, if you are willing to accept the concept of a boy with a pumpkin head and a knife and a yearly child sacrifice, this is short and a lot of fun.

The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones: Just an elk killed when some kids were blowing off steam. Just an elk damning the rest of their lives. (Jones’s My Heart is a Chainsaw was too sad for me to recommend as a favorite, but I am curious about the sequel.)

The Wolfen by Whitley Striber: I wanted to include a good werewolf novel on this list, and The Wolfen wins by far for interesting creature design. (The runner up was The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan.)

The Auctioneer by Joan Samson: A very atypical entry on this list, closer to Twin Peaks than your average thriller. A rural town is turned into a capitalist police state when a slick salesman comes to see what they’ll allow him to do. It turns out, it’s a lot.

The Drive-In by Joe R. Lansdale: The only “splatterpunk” I’ve ever loved, this is an absurdist nightmare about a southern drive-in crowd who get stuck in a world with only the movie screens and each other, turning into literal and figurative monsters. Usually published with the sequel, since both are short, though I didn’t like the latter as much. If you like it, read one of Lansdale’s short story collections.

So if you think you’re going to get a better deal next time, in ’25, if President Trump’s president, Democrats will be expecting a pathway to citizenship for that,” he said. “So to my Republican colleagues, this is a historic moment to reform the border.”

This will not reflect every single aspect of the gilded age (1870s to 1890s) but it will include various points of historical and technological interest in addition to Nell and Steve’s personal histories. As such, spoilers will be included and updated with each chapter; so if you’d rather not deal with that, please avoid this!

Note: Italics denote events of the plot, & updates will occur after chapters are published. This is work in progress so more dates and details will be added as I think of them. Historical dates and information was provided by the National Humanities Center and my own research.

1858 - June: Samuel and Ameila Harrington welcome the birth of their son and heir, Steven.

November: Arthur and Delphine Fairchild welcome the birth of their daughter, Eleanor. (Occurs before the story starts, not depicted.)

1865 - Lincoln Inauguration, Civil War Ends, Lincoln Assassination, Ratification of the 13th Amendment

1866 - the National Labor Union was founded on August 20, First successful transatlantic cable is completed (England to the United States).

1868 - June 25: Congress enacts an 8-hour workday for workers employed by the government, July: Ratification of the 14th Amendment.

1869 - January: Grant Inauguration, Commanche Chief Toch-a-way informs Gen. Philip H. Sheridan that he is a "good Indian," Sheridan reportedly replied: "The only good Indian is a dead Indian."

May: First Transcontinental Railroad completed when Union Pacific and Central Pacific lines met in Utah solidified by a golden railroad spike to link the railroads.

September 24: First “Black Friday” stock market panic due to financier’s attempt to corner the market on gold.

1870 - February: Hiram R. Revels of Mississippi becomes the first African American to serve in the US Senate. Joseph H. Rainey of South Carolina becomes the first Black Representative, J.D. Rockefeller establishes Standard Oil of Ohio.

March: 15th Amendment is Ratified

1871 - P.T. Barnum opens his three-ring circus, hailing it as the "Greatest Show on Earth,"

March: Indian Appropriations Act - Congress declares that Indian tribes will no longer be treated as independent nations with whom the government must conduct negotiations; Native Americans legally become wards of the nation.

October 8: The Great Chicago Fire claims 250 lives and destroys 17,500 buildings.

1872 - Montgomery Ward & Co., the first mail-order business, opens in Chicago.

Nov. 5: Susan B. Anthony and other women's suffrage advocates are arrested for attempting to vote in Rochester, N.Y.

1873 - Grant’s second inauguration, The first electric streetcar begins operation in New York City; Free mail delivery begins in all cities above 20,000 population; Mark Twain and C. D. Warner publish the novel The Gilded Age.

Mar. 3: The Comstock Act prohibits the mailing of obscene literature.

Sept. 18: The Financial Panic of 1873 begins. 5,183 business fail; Congress makes gold the national standard and eliminates all silver currency.

Period of recurring epidemics beginning in 1865 comes to an end. From Boston to New Orleans, epidemics of smallpox, cholera, typhus, typhoid, scarlet fever, and yellow fever had killed thousands.

1875 - Steven begins his studies at Harvard; Nell begins hers at Vassar; Christopher, her older brother begins his final year at Harvard. (Occurs before the story starts, not depicted.)

1876 - Centennial Exposition opens in Philadelphia, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Feb. 14: 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell patents the telephone.

May: The nation celebrates its centennial by opening an International Exhibition in Philadelphia.

Christopher graduates from Harvard and goes on his Grand Tour. (Occurs before the story starts, not depicted.)

June 25: Battle of the Little Big Horn - George A. Custer and 265 officers and enlisted men are killed by Sioux Indians led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse at the Little Horn River in Montana.

1877 - Hayes Inauguration, Reconstruction ends with the withdrawal of federal troops in the south, Great Railroad Strike: After West Virginia railroad workers strike to protest wage reductions, sympathy strikes and violence spread across the Midwest. Federal troops break the strikes.

June to Oct.: Nez Percé Indians, led by Chief Joseph, surrender after a 1600-mile trek retreating from U.S. troops through the U.S. northwest. They are sent to a reservation in Indian Territory (Oklahoma).

Thomas Edison patents the phonograph.

Christopher Fairchild weds Marian Hudson. (Occurs before the story starts, not depicted.)

1878 - German engineer Karl Benz produces the first automobile powered by an internal combustion engine; Thomas Edison patents the photograph.

Jan. 10: The Senate defeats a woman's suffrage amendment 34-16.

Steve graduates from Harvard University. (Occurs before the story starts, not depicted.)

1879 - The Carlisle School (Pa.) is opened “Americanize” Indian children.

Feb. 15: Congress grants woman attorneys the right to argue cases before the Supreme Court.

Oct. 21: Edison invents the first practical light bulb.

Steve travels Europe on his Grand Tour; Nell returns to France upon news of her parent’s ill health. (Occurs before the story starts, not depicted.)

1881 - Helen Hunt Jackson's Century of Dishonor recounts the government's unjust treatment of Native Americans.

January: Christopher and Marian Fairchild welcome the birth of their son and heir, August.

May: Steven returns to New York from the Continent; begins working with his father at their various real estate holdings. (Occurs before the story starts, not depicted.)

July 2: President James Garfield is shot by Charles Guiteau, a disgruntled office-seeker. He died on Sept. 19.

July 4: Booker T. Washington opens Tuskegee Institute.

July 19: Sitting Bull and other Sioux Indians return to the United States from Canada.

September: Arthur and Delphine Fairchild pass away after battling tuberculosis; Christopher takes over the family holdings and arranges for his sister to travel back to New York from France; Marian begins paying calls to the Four Hundred and laying the groundwork for Eleanor’s societal debut. (Occurs before the story starts, not depicted but mentioned.)

1882 - Attorney Samuel Dodd devises the trust, under which stockholders turn over control of previously independent companies to a board of trustees; Standard Oil Trust, the first trust, is formed by John D. Rockefeller.

May 6: Congress passes the Chinese Exclusion Act, barring Chinese Chinese immigration for ten years.

December: Eleanor arrives in New York from France entering her half-mourning period and Steven has one-sided meet cute; news the arrival spreads quickly; her debutante ball to be held at the Fairchild manse on 5th Avenue is the talk of the town. (Chapter I. Coup de foudre - story begins here.)

1883 -

January: Mrs. Astor’s annual ball, the most anticipated event of the season, is held; Nell and Steve both receive invitations.

March 26: Mrs. Vanderbilt, feeling snubbed by The Four Hundred, throws her famous masquerade ball, commemorating the completion of her new Fifth Avenue mansion, Petit Château; Nell and Steve are once again invited to the masquerade, but Nell is warned by Marian to keep her distance from Mr. Harrington; each invite has instructions to dress as their assigned characters. location: in the crownlands, the night of the attempted murder of graham royce. after axell nearly beat to the death the man whom tried to kill him.

t h e s e r v i n g g i r l

anger smoldered within him like a banked fire, casting a shadow over his thoughts. the man who had come close to snuffing out his brother's life still haunted his mind, igniting a fierce blaze of fury within him. if only he had been granted another fleeting moment alone with the villain, they would be laying him to rest instead.

regret gnawed at him, a bitter taste that lingered on his tongue. he wished he had seized the opportunity to put an end to the threat that had nearly stolen his brother away.

instead he had to sit and wait for the initial interrogations to complete before he could continue his own interrogation. he sat amongst those celebrating the tournaments. mostly men drinking heavily and talking about how they did at the games.  amidst the revelry of the tournament celebrations, he sat among his comrades, their boisterous laughter and spirited tales fading into the background as he nursed his drink in solemn silence.

across the party, he spotted her. he had no idea who she was or what her name. it didn’t matter she was just a serving girl, filling the cups of the lords. but his eyes could not leave her. she looked so similar to her. in the darkness of the party and the swirling crowd he could have sworn it was her. for a moment he wondered if she might be an arryn bastard. except this one smiled more. but it was not a cruel smile, a cat-like grin of a predator he had become familiar with. this one had more of a carefree air, seemingly not caring.

he needed her. the thought crossed his mind in an instant. he must have her.

the anger built inside of him again. and why shouldnt he have her? she was a serving girl. she should be so lucky. 

his eyes followed her as she stepped outside, gathering tankards and cups that had been left outside. he stood up and followed her out into the darkness. he watched her movements, how she walked, how she looked bending over to grab the cups scattered on the ground. 

he hadnt meant to startle her when he began speaking but soon enough he had her laughing. serving girls like this were so easy to sway. they found every conversation charming. every ounce of attention to mean everything. poor girls looking to rise above their station. hoping one of these valyrian bastards would take her as their fifth or sixth wife. whatever they did here.

soon enough he had pulled her towards one of the dark corners of the garden. somewhere no one could see them. her lips on his. his hands exploring every inch of her body. until he pulled away from her kiss. “on your knees.” he commanded her, his hand on her shoulder to push her down.

“wait m’lord.” she spoke. “you swear to me you arent just wanting to sleep with me and leave. you like me?” she asked him.

stupid girl. but axell smiled at her, running his hand through her hair. “i swear. i am a lord from the vale. my word is my honor.”

somehow that seemed to calm her. silly girl, but they would believe anything. the chivalrous knights of the vale were told in stories. no doubt she assumed he was one of those honorable men. but if he was such an honorable man he wouldnt be guiding her down to her knees. he wouldnt be reveling in pleasure in the hidden corners of the dark.

the ghost of runestone’s fingers tangled in this woman’s dark hair. from this angle he could almost swear it was her, that it was his queen. he could pretend it was. pretend it was her raven locks gripped in his fingers. that it was her on her knees infront of him.

in the dark corner of the garden there was only groans coming from him. and the conscious effort to hold back the use of her name. but before he drew too close to his end he pulled away from the serving girl. he pulled her up from the floor, turning her around to push her against the stone garden wall. he grabbed her skirts, bunching them and tossing them over her ass. in a moment he pushed back inside of her, not waiting a moment to let her get her bearings in this new position before he began once again. she was just a serving girl, he doubted he was the first lord who had her like this out in the gardens.

he felt his control slipping as he moved within her. his anger, his frustrations from the day coming out in his movements within her. there was a harsh rhythm he set, but given the small noises she was making with each movement from him, she didnt seem to mind.

the serving girl started to turn her head back to look towards him but axel reached out with an iron grip on her neck, holding her in place. “don’t move.” he warned her, his breathing ragged.  he didnt want to see her face because then he would know who she was again. he needed to pretend for that moment he had her pressed up against that wall. it was her little noises he was pulling from her. the groans she would give him when he squeezed her neck. that it was her moaning as she reached her ending, as she tightened around him.

there was no control in axell as he roughly thrust into her chasing his own ending. his large body enveloping her as he pinned her against the wall. he bit down on her shoulder as he buried himself deep inside of her and finished. maybe biting a little too hard, he could taste a slight hint of metallic blood. a mark for a queen, he could pretend. something she would have to hide from his brother to not stir questions. would she be mad at him for it? he didnt care. he wanted to know he left a mark there, to remind her of him….but this wasnt his queen. this wasnt her. it didnt matter if he marked her.

his mind began to rest once again, his breathing still slightly ragged as he rested his forehead on her shoulder just listening to her breathe. after a moment he finally pulled away from her, fixing himself up. “i will have a room tomorrow night at the tavern with the blue bird outside of it, do you know the one?” he asked her, waiting until she nodded until he continued. “you will meet me there an hour after sunset tomorrow.” he instructed her. without another word he turned to leave her alone outside and made his way back inside, satisfied he had at least gotten what he wanted.
