me: so this song is about two guys with big dreams who didn’t fit the mold of their traditional christian west texas society and so that society separated them and tried to beat them down. but the moral is that those attempts to make them conform aren’t worthy of any praise or deserving of any forgiveness, and those two guys are gonna keep fighting to make something of themselves despit-

Hypothetically, of course:
Let me walk you through a hypothetical:
If someone (hypothetically) were to consider writing a Newsies high school AU that was NPMD with Javid in it, how would we go about casting?
…hypothetically?
#Jack as Steph#davey as pete#oscar and/or morris as max jägerman#snyder as the mayor#Cause idek#uhhh I can’t imagine any of them being as strange as grace chastity but for the sake of it let’s say Albert???#race as Richie :(#crutchie as Ruth??? :((#I was much more sure of the ones above 😅#and hypothetically#Katherine as Detective Shapiro#Or medda#I also find it funny imagining spot and his Brooklyn crew as the Lords in Black#The only one strange enough to be Grace would be Morris but I don’t like the resulting dynamic between him and Oscar#So maybe Morris is like another one of the football guys?#And idk if you’re thinking of the movie or the musical but I think Denton would make a good officer Bailey#Maybe Katherine as Ruth?????

Hey! I wanna talk for a sec about the Live Music Archive. If you're a tMG fan who's on here you probably already at least know about it, but for anyone unfamiliar I want to do a quick post talking about what it is and how you can listen!
The Live Music Archive is a collection hosted by the Internet Archive for audio recordings of concerts. Specifically, the LMA hosts, with permission from the band, user-contributed recordings of concerts. Some fans will go to concerts with recording gear to take a full audio recording of the show and then upload it to the archive under the band's collection. As of writing this post there are almost 450 live tapes uploaded to the tMG LMA collection!
There's a few ways that you can listen to recordings on the Live Music Archive. The webpage works pretty well both on desktop and mobile browsers, and that's what I typically use. You can also listen on web without having to make an account on the Internet Archive, which is convenient for browsing. I also use the webpage to download mp3s of favorite tapes to my phone, so that I can listen to them in my local music player.
However, if you don't mind making a free account and prefer the convenience of something more like Spotify, you can also listen to anything on the LMA via the Taper's Section app for Android or the Live Music Archive app for iOS! (Obligatory disclaimer that I use an Android and can't personally vouch for the iOS app, but afaik they have similar features.) The apps have the same functionality as the webpage in a more streamlined mobile-friendly interface, plus things like notifications when there's a new tape added to a collection you follow and downloading in-app for offline listening. The Android app also has a tab for tapes from today's date, there's often at least one (there are FOUR for today!) and that's a really fun way to find tapes to listen to.
If you're looking at this going, wow, that sounds really cool but there's so many tapes that it's a little overwhelming to get into this, don't worry! I'll leave you with a couple recommendations. As mentioned above, I like to listen to shows from the current date. Another fun way to find shows is looking for a specific song - you can go on the wiki and it'll list every show at which the song has been played live, and then just search until you find one of them that has a tape on the archive. Lastly, a few specific favorite tapes of mine:
- 2014-06-15 has the entirety of Taboo VI: The Homecoming played live + one of my absolute favorite performances of both Woke Up New and The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton.
- 2015-06-01 is the only time Straight Six has ever been played live and it's interestingly pretty different from the EP version, plus a phenomenal back to back Spent Gladiator 1 & 2.
- 2021-08-06 was the first show after the band started playing concerts again post 2020, and it has a really incredible energy and a phenomenal setlist.
- 2024-03-01 is from the recent run of solo shows, this one was at Grace Cathedral and the ambience is truly truly incredible, it feels so ethereal.
Please feel free to add any additional notes or some of your own favorite tapes to the post as well! Happy listening!!
#txt#transmissions from lyric#the mountain goats#tmg#tapes#theres a post of live tape recs that im gonna go back and rb after this#and im also gonna start posting some favorite live recordings regularly! which is why i wanted to make this post!#the LMA is such an incredible resource#and at some point ill make a followup post about how to contribute to the LMA but thats a later post#resources

Gorgug Thistlespring Junior Year Playlist: Side A
Heres Gorgug's playlist! Literally the sweetest ever, deserves the world and more. Spoilers for Episodes 1-10
Genres Include: Alt Rock, Anti-Folk, Punk, Metal
1. Dashboard, Modest Mouse
Well, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know Oh, the dashboard melted but we still have the radio Oh, it should've been, could've been worse than you would ever know Well, you told me about nowhere Well, it sounds like someplace I'd like to go
Ok nothing made me laugh harder than the image of the Hangvan beat to shit and Gorgug still having to drive it back for two days straight. TWO DAYS STRAIGHT. Despicable. Deplorable. Hilarious.
2. The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton, Laura Jane Grace
When you punish a person for dreaming their dream Don't expect 'em to thank or forgive you The best ever death metal band out of Denton Will, in time, both outpace and outlive you Hail Satan, Hail Satan, tonight Hail Satan, hail, hail
This song is less of a 1 to 1 representation of Gorgug's situation and more like a song that, if he heard it at this specific time in his life, would utterly destroy him. I am really never gonna forgive Porter for the way he treated Gorgug, and as an educator, I never ever want to make anyone feel the way these fake people felt in their fake game. While this song is originally (and famously) by The Mountain Goats I really like the Laura Jane Grace cover. And I love it for Gorgug as a kind of wink to @rabdoidal 's transfem Gorgug hc, which is another thing I absolutely love.
3. Overbite, Sincere Engineer
Could have been a doctor if I really cared enough But I didn't have it in me I got distracted by a bunch of stuff I'm so stupid and empty My mind just wasn't in it And neither was my heart ... I'm not basing my intelligence on some fucking letters And now that it's over I did what I was told I had to do But I still feel just about as dumb as I used to I still feel just about as dumb as I used to
Gorgug Thistlespring took FOUR YEARS of classes. He did that. He did it and he fucking crit. He fucking got straight As on Artificer and didn't flunk Barbarian, which is basically a genius-level thing to do. Fuck Porter, and honestly? fuck Henry Hopclap for letting a 17-year-old do this to himself when he could have just confronted Porter himself LIKE HE WAS SUPPOSED TO LIKE AN ADULT
4. Dragged Across the Finish Line, Sincere Engineer
I'm not trying to win I'm just trying to finish I don't know when it ends But I'm counting the minutes And I'm counting on you Yeah, I'm counting on you I remember when I knew it 'cause I saw it in your eyes And I did what I had to, I dragged you across the finish line It would be so nice If you could do that for me this time
Is this the second song in a row by Sincere Engineer on this 6 song playlist? Yes, it is, and I am not apologizing for it because it's perfect. Also, Sincere Engineer sounds like a band name that Gorgug would think of because that's what he is. Also I really like the way this kind of makes a parallel to Gorgug helping his friends (it's gorgug keep going) and them helping him do well in his classes with studying and everything.
5. Terrifyer, AJJ
Then it got personal, I saw my rage I just wanted to rage, but all I got was tired I tried to walk to the building, but the beauty it brittled me I tried to talk to the waiter, but the beauty gentled me I ran away from the security guard Because security guards dishearten me I said goodbye to my dignity Said goodbye to my dignity
I know that the structure of an adventuring school is different than something in the real world, and if we were to apply the current utilitarian models of education towards a system that prioritizes people who freak out and fight stuff and not just people who can churn out content and do services, it would make sense that teachers in this system can freak out on students and that's like normal, but I'm gonna say the most lukewarm take ever and say it's fucked up that Porter kept bending the rules for Fig and didn't do fucking anything for Gorgug, just to say that it was to "make him embrace his rage"
Like if we're gonna prioritize class excellence, then Porter should have been more than happy to help Gorgug find a class in which he felt more comfortable, even if, at the end of the day, Porter thought Gorgug should ultimately drop Barbarian.
6. St. Anger, Metallica
And I want my anger to be healthy And I want my anger just for me And I need my anger not to control And I want my anger to be me And I need to set my anger free And I need to set my anger free And I need to set my anger free Set it free
I have mixed feelings about the way Gorgug finally got his MCAT signed, because, like - yes, anger and rage aren't necessarily bad, and while Gorgug initially was repressing his anger in season 1, I really think that isn't the case anymore. And yet we have Porter pushing rage so hard in the "corrupting rage" season.
I truly believe that anger can be a beautiful and natural thing, that it keeps you safe in certain situations, that it shows you when you are being mistreated and lets you advocate for yourself. And I think that that is a lesson that a lot of the bad kids need to learn, specifically Kristin, Riz, and even Adaine (with the transition to using a sword and also the whole deal with Adaine's furious fists). But Gorgug already learned that lesson. Sometimes you don't have to be angry????

Not So Berry (Straud Descendants) Gen 9
Today's (8/28/2024) Episode: On Her Shoulders
Luigi’s reputation was critical to maintain his endorsement deals, buzz for his game, and of course his actual e-sports career, so he took it seriously.
One easy way to make others see him as a “good sim” was regular donations to charity.
He found worthy causes to associate his name with, such as Tess’s ex-boyfriend Julio’s “happiness for all” campaign and the Tomorang Renters Fund, which temporarily paid the rent for sims who were down on their luck so they wouldn’t get evicted and wind up homeless.
Luigi’s enterprising efforts were only possible by the grace of his rock-solid support system.
Now that it was her full-time job, Noemi had taken over the lion’s share of management and development for Project Daisy, in addition to being Skye’s primary caregiver. She’d never been the best at dealing with strangers, and lately organizing their staff of artists and programmers was wearing through her patience faster than it ever had before. It was a trial she could only bear by assigning herself chunks of relaxing code work between meetings.
The freedom to pick her own timelines and teammates was undeniably the part of being “lead programmer” that got her through all the rest, but her strange irritability remained a worrying mystery. Fortunately, at her annual GYN checkup, her doctor put her mind at ease with a simple explanation.
Noemi was officially going through “the change” and her issues were just temporary side effects of her body and mind adjusting to the perfectly normal and expected changes of leaving her child-bearing years (and hormones) behind.
Noemi was honestly relieved by her advancing age. She had never feared the idea of growing older and she and Luigi had long ago decided they were “one and done” in the kid department. If anything, saying goodbye to worries about a second unplanned pregnancy was a big win!
Her doctor warned her about other unpleasant symptoms that might pop up, but she was hardly listening as she gleefully composed emails pushing her most annoying issues back to Luigi.
“These hot flashes make me way too sweaty during the all-hands standup meeting. I’m going to need you to take those over.” … “Susan’s being a plumhole about revising the walk animations. Talk her around before I shiv her. Mood swings, you know.”
By the next time both sims had a day off, Noemi was feeling much more like herself, and they made some time to visit family.
Luigi and the relatives he was closest to had mostly ended up childless or with small families, but Chance and Bianca’s daughter Fern wanted a full house. When her third little one was born, she invited his family over to meet the new addition and hang out with the rest of her crew.
While the energetic Skye played outside with Fern’s doggie and the other kids, Luigi and Noemi headed in to say hello to little Alice. Noemi and Luigi had a great time holding the adorable tiny newborn and an even better time handing it back for a diaper change with big smiles. No more for them!
Even their next stop, seeing relatives at the wake for Denton’s mother Nikita, put no significant damper on Noemi’s improved mood.
She was, of course, sad for her friend’s loss, but the quiet atmosphere, surrounded by sims she knew well as her husband mixed drinks behind the bar, was as close to her ideal evening as was possible without a sturdy set of padded handcuffs.
She’d felt lonely and misunderstood as Kiana’s “too young” wife, but loving Luigi had brought her right into the heart of his warm family circle.
As Denton wept on her shoulder, she reflected on how happy she was to have given this strange family a second chance.

What Moves the Dead. By T. Kingfisher. Nightfire, 2022.
Rating: 4/5 stars
Genre: horror, novella
Series: Sworn Soldier #1
Summary: When Alex Easton, a retired soldier, receives word that their childhood friend Madeline Usher is dying, they race to the ancestral home of the Ushers in the remote countryside of Ruravia.
What they find there is a nightmare of fungal growths and possessed wildlife, surrounding a dark, pulsing lake. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in strange voices at night, and her brother Roderick is consumed with a mysterious malady of the nerves.
Aided by a redoubtable British mycologist and a baffled American doctor, Alex must unravel the secret of the House of Usher before it consumes them all.
***Full review below.***
CONTENT WARNINGS: dead animals, disturbing imagery
OVERVIEW: This is my third Kingfisher book. After being disappointed by Paladin's Grace and lukewarm on A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, I figured I'd see if something more spooky would be more to my taste. Fortunately, it was; the humor I disliked elsewhere in Kingfisher's works was toned down in this novella, and the creepiness factor made What Moves the Dead a delightful Halloween read. There are some things I think I can criticize, however, which is why this book gets 4 stars from me.
WRITING: Kingfisher does a wonderful job in this novella of making the atmosphere feel oppressive, unsettling, and downright eerie. I loved the way she described the house and the surrounding area, and I loved the descriptions of the smell of mushrooms and the odd movement of animals.
I also appreciated that the humor was a bit more restrained. In the past, Kingfisher's humor has been not for me; there are still some moments of lightheartedness and sarcasm in this novella, but I personally found them more tolerable.
PLOT: The plot of this book follows Alex Easton, a career soldier who makes their way to the house of their childhood friends, the Ushers. Madeline Usher has fallen gravely ill, and her brother Roderick seems to be little better. But when Easton discovers some odd ecological behavior around the estate, they begin to suspect not all is right in the Usher household.
I respected that this story was a retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's Fall of the House of Usher, and after reading Kingfisher's author notes, I was impressed by the creativity and nuance that she picked up on.
I also enjoyed the overwhelming sense of dread and the way Kingfisher made the ecology of the world unsettling. I've read a few books where the (spoiler) has been the culprit of a few spooky events, but the horrifying way things were described and the overwhelming sense of terror was top notch, in my opinion.
I do have some criticisms, though, which prevented me from giving this novella a full 5 stars. In my opinion, I think there were some moments where Kingfisher could have held back. There are some scenes when things are explained to the reader a little too bluntly, and while I can understand not wanting to leave anyone confused, I think holding some things back would have heightened the terror much more.
CHARACTERS: Easton, our protagonist and POV character, is generally amiable and has warm intententions towards the Ushers. I enjoyed the world and society that Easton came from; they come from a culture where there are many more pronouns than in English, so Easton is a kind of trans/nonbinary/queer figure. I do wish Easton held back a little more humor, though, as some of it jarred me and took me out of the horror, but on the whole, Easton was fine as a protagonist.
The Ushers were delightfully unsettling. I loved the way Kingfisher plays with the Gothic tropes of the source material and makes everything all the more disturbing. I also liked how there seemed to be genuine affection between the Ushers and their friends, and their attitudes towards their ancestral home were helpful in making the narrative spookier.
Denton, the American doctor, was also useful in that he lent some outside perspective. The constant jabs at his Americanness were amusing at first, but I personally got tired of them as the story continued. Still, it was helpful to have someone there with whom Easton could converse.
Miss Potter, the mycologist, was an utter delight. I loved the expertise and enthusiasm she lent to the story, and her unflappable attitude was a nice contrast to Easton's and Denton's near-panic.
TL;DR: What Moves The Dead is a delightfully unsettling retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher. Though I wish more humor had been restrained and I think Kingfisher could have held some things back to heighten the horror, overall, this was a good read for Halloween and a novella that is sure to delight Gothic fans.
