like, there's this tiny beat in the last scene where, right after they hug goodbye, you can just tell from grace's posture that she wants to keep hugging frankie instead of leaving. but she can't. because she has a husband now. which was a mistake. because her real husband is her wife frankie. but who can she ever say that to? how can she ever fully admit it? god, it's delicious!!!
grace and frankie 6x01! aaaaaah!!!!!!!!

Grace & Frankie season 6 wrap-up
Spoilers for up to and including S6.
This season was a weird one for me. It started pretty strong, and ended on one of my favourite episodes, but the middle kind of lacked direction and relied very heavily on miscommunication. The epitome of this, for me, was Grace's relationship with Nick. They were a particularly interesting duo from the moment they were introduced, and I wasn't against their marriage, as Nick was really winning me over. The show emphasised his love for Grace above all else, until they got married. Then, there was miscommunication and lies (like, a lot of lies, in hindsight), along with a need to be placed above everything else in Grace's life. The thing that made it worse was that Grace went along with this. We've seen this side of her before in previous relationships, and this aspect of her marriage to Robert has been mentioned many times, but it looked like things would be different with N. Ultimately, G came fully to her senses and made what seemed like a very strong decision, but shit hit the fan. Truly. But the Grace and Frankie relationship remains strong.
Robert and Sol went through a similar process. They started strong, and stayed strong through Sol's cancer, which I thought showed a lot of emotional growth on both their parts. Then Robert spent a lot of money and lied to S about it and things got bad. Why was this a plot that happened? I don't know, but at least they got over it.
Mallory is not having a good time with relationships, but she's starting to realise her worth outside of family and love, which I love to see, even if there will definitely be conflict between her and Brianna.
Speaking of Brianna, she's developed almost in an opposite way to her sister, in learning to prioritise Barry sometimes. Their arrangement is not a conventional one, but very few relationships in this show are and I really want to see it work out because I love them so much.
Coyote honestly deserves the world and I'm so glad he's realised that and has found someone else who also recognises it.
Bud and Alison didn't get much this season, but they remain fairly solid apart from that hiccup in the middle which, again, felt unnecessary.

ok i think w gen 3 i dont /hate/ it but the main things I think that i dislike vs gen 1 and 2 are:
- i dont like that this group of people all started off hating each other; it makes their friendships feel disingenuous, esp bc they dont exactly grow to /like/ each other even; they still hate most everyone, so like, why are you hanging out?
- all of the 'positive' relationships seem to pop out of nowhere, even if the chemistry is good once the relationship starts up (rich/grace, mini/frankie)
- it seems to focus in s1 all with relationship drama, which while a staple of the show in the past, it hasnt seemed to focus on real/relevant teen issues of the time like the prior two did and im on s5e7. ive never made it all the way thru s6 bc they did frankie So Dirty, but if that was their attempt to fast track the 'serious' aiy. and its not cuz they didnt have the set up for important teen shit (gender, parental abuse, EDs, parentification, parents health complications, family in prison) but it all felt treated as one offs

In summary, 5 books, 49 movies, 64 tv shows of varying levels of engagement and 27 cultural experiences.
Easily the least number of books I've read in a single year since I could read. Mostly because it's hard and tiring for me to read with bad eyes and spending long days reading with my job. Interesting that I'm being drawn more to non-fiction than fiction these days.
Wow I watch a lot of tv and film. I really enjoyed Fresh off the Boat and multiple seasons of Below Deck this year. The right balance of entertaining and easy to wind down to and knit to after work.
I feel like I don't gig anywhere near as much as I used to, and that makes me sad. But I do like that I'm still doing on average a cultural thing every two weeks. Less gigs, more other types of culture and I'm definitely throwing lots of support behind the local culture scene.

I wanna say Frankie Bergstein grabbing weed from a grinder and sprinkling it over her pie is iconic, but it’s also very Rich White Stoner of her?
Like if Jeffree Star and Mary Berry had merged into one person....

random thoughts, having finished my grace and frankie rewatch! this is mostly complaining, but just because i care about this show, dangit.
+ GRACE AND FRANKIE AND THEIR LOVE ARE PERFECT, THE END.
+ i def feel like s1-s3, when the show was a bit less broad and more drama-leaning, is its strongest and most resonant era. there will be a piece of my g&f fangirl heart that forever yearns to go fully back to that tone, and i don't think the show ever totally does. s4-s5 are probably the weakest for me (with s4 an especial low because grace and frankie are apart for so much of it), and then s6-s7 bounce back a lot in terms of grace/frankie stuff due to the love triangle with nick, even if in terms of the rest of the ensemble, it's really a mixed bag as usual!
+ poor robert and sol really get such a downgrade in the portrayal of their relationship as the show goes on! i think part of the reason s1-s3 are so strong is that there's a lot of GOOD, thoughtful robert/sol stuff in them, and then around the time that roy enters the picture, it's just like the more sensitive robert/sol stuff goes away and almost never returns. man, are their latter-seasons plotlines ever thankless! the stupid stuff these guys had to do! WHY??? even the last arc with robert's memory loss doesn't really hit as hard as it should just because everything's been so blah prior.
+ i also find the robert's-memory-loss plotline very incomplete-feeling because it's so weird that we never see grace and frankie find out about it. i feel like you could have almost powered an eighth season on that alone. (and the rise up finally finding an investor! and grace and frankie accidentally entering a new era of making out with each other. 😘)
+ i can't decide if i like the brianna and barry breakup because the whole show is fundamentally about breaking up and therefore it's good to have a big breakup at the end, or if it just doesn't quite work. i mean, it's definitely a good idea for them to break up because by s7, their relationship is pretty relentlessly terrible in a way that's just hard to watch, but i'm still just not totally sure about how it was written. it leaves me feeling very .... huh, i guess?!?! all these years, for that??
+ i really think they should've had bud want to go into a more humanitarian but less lucrative field of law or something, rather than the standup comedian thing. the comedian thing just feels soooo random for bud and it's very hard to portray standup comedy in a winsome way on tv to begin with. like, his last scene ever is about this! and i can only ask: why?
+ do you think the writers knew that allison probably has mcas?
+ but at least grace and frankie are the most in love.

nobody asked but my top 3 shitty teen drama characters that should have been gay or bi are Grace Cardinal from Degrassi, Mini McGuinness from Skins and Sam Evans from Glee
#if you asked me why i could produce a fully cited essay on each omg#when degrassi strung me along so hard with the grace/zoe relationship to the point they literally slept together and then went super no homo#with grace :'( at least we have zoe lesbian i love her but#when mini was heavily implied to be gay and closeted and had feelings for franky#and then s6 just pretended it never happened and gave her some hawful pregnancy storyline with fucking alo??#when sam was originally brought on to be the love interest for kurt and his first couple episodes leaned heavily into that then#allegedly they decided to put him w quinn b/c 'chemistry' as if that was a better storyline#as if he couldnt have just BEEN BISEXUAL??

the audacity of having Robert and Sol say “not to sound like you, but” and then IMMEDIATELY have Grace tell Frankie “don’t you think you’re being a little Grace-ish? maybe we should go get your talking stick” ...these parallels ARE deliberate and this is either beautiful foreshadowing or blatant baiting
