US eases India Covid alert level; Canada to reopen for fully vaccinated from September 7 - Net4News

NEW DELHI: The United States has lowered its travel advisory for India for its citizens from the highest level 4 “do not travel” to level 3 “reconsider travel” with the Covid-19 situation easing significantly in the country. It remains to be seen when the US removes or eases restrictions on travel from India. Canada, which has extended suspension of flights from India by a month till August 21, will open to fully vaccinated with recognised jabs from all countries on September 7 for non-essential travel subject to the overall pandemic situation. Coronavirus: Live updates The US department of state revised the travel advisory for India on Monday (July 19) and it now says: “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 Travel Health Notice for India due to Covid-19, indicating a high level of Covid-19 in the country. Your risk of contracting Covid-19 and developing severe symptoms may be lower if you are fully vaccinated with an FDA authorised vaccine … ” The CDC website says: “Make sure you are fully vaccinated before traveling to India. Unvaccinated travellers should avoid nonessential travel to India. Because of the current situation in India, all travellers may be at risk for getting and spreading Covid-19 variants.” The US has four travel advisory levels — 4: Do not travel. 3: Reconsider travel. 2: Exercise increased caution. 1: Exercise normal precautions. The US had put India on level 4 in April-end when the devastating second wave was peaking here, advising against all travel to India. “Level 4 travel advisory is the highest level issued by the Department of State and advises US citizens not to travel to India or to leave as soon as it is safe to do so due to the current health situation in country,” the Level 4 warning for India had said. Meanwhile, Canada which had suspended all commercial and private passenger flights from India on April 23, 2021, has now extended the same by a month till August 21, 2021. But the country may soon open for fully vaccinated (with recognised jabs) in early September. “As of September 7, fully-vaccinated people from any country can come into Canada for non-essential travel. As a first step, fully-vaccinated Americans can do the same starting August 9. At every step, the safety of Canadians will continue to be our top priority,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted Tuesday morning (India time). Entry to Canada will continue to be prohibited for US travellers who are not fully vaccinated and for all other foreign nationals, unless they already meet an exemption set out in the Orders made under the Quarantine Act,” it adds. Module 1 Reflection

What is Digital Government

Prior to our first-class last Wednesday, I had a vague idea of what digital government is. I had always heard the term being thrown around, and understood instances of what it entailed, however, I feel as though I hadn’t sufficiently grasped the concept of digital government, especially as it relates to fully modernizing the ways in which the government carries out its services to citizens.

Although, one example of how I had interpreted ‘digital government’ prior to our first class relates to health-care services. For example, allowing citizens to have full access to details regarding their health, allowing them to see test results online, book appointments online, etc. However, it wasn’t until our last class that I really began to think about the implications of applying digital government to not only healthcare but other potential and existing services.

Additionally, as part of our last class, I felt that I got a really good understanding of the varied ways in which the Ontario and Canadian Government, as well as other entities like Amazon have both pushed the boundaries of digital service, but also how they have much room to grow. For example, It had never occurred to me how amazing it is that we can predict how much OSAP aid we could be eligible for, or how awesome it is that in regards to PESTO, we can load our cards online; both of which require no human interaction at all.

Additional Thoughts

Although Canada has a long way to go towards fully embracing a ‘digital government’, I feel as though our last class and the potential of a fully digital Canadian government got me simultaneously excited and concerned for the future of society.

On the one hand, a fully digital Canadian government, for all intents and purposes, should help Canadians access services more easily and enable them to devote time that would have been spent navigating through bureaucratic processes. Conversely, I feel as though a fully digital Canadian government, like the process of automation taking over fast-food and retail industries could also serve as a detriment, in the sense that it would reduce social connectedness, and increase isolation as it’s another aspect of life in which would not require human interaction.

All in all, I’m extremely excited that we live in this time period, in which we will hopefully see Canada embrace a ‘digital government’ even further, and excited to see the tangible effects of this modernization on my own life.
