A mosasaur jaw of a Tethysaurus nopcsai from the Akrabou Formation in Asfla, Goulmima, Errachidia, Morocco. While most Moroccan mosasaurs are from Maastrichtian deposits, Tethysaurus is a lesser known genus from the much older Turonian age.

..In the 80’s Hannsjörg Voth discovers the Moroccan desert. Attracted by the desertic vastness, the landscape zero, he built his first project in the plain of Marha, between Goulmima and Arfoud. The Himmelstreppe (Stairway to Heaven) was built and self-financed between 1980 and 1987. Fascinated by astronomy, he built a staircase whose top side walls are narrowed, creating a vertical slit facing the stars. The structure/sculpture is 19m high and has 56 steps, creating a shadow that runs all around. The interior of this monumental staircase is also accessible, as different rooms are built into the structure..

A lovely mountain drive through the high plateaus of the Atlas Mountains

Sometimes, it’s nice to just get in a car and take a mountain drive. There’s nothing like the freedom to explore an area at one’s own pace, stopping at scenic viewpoints, lunching at an out of the way café, eating pomegranates while watching the sunset, or hanging out with shepherds watering their sheep.

Unfortunately, Peace Corps has very strict rules prohibiting volunteers operating motor vehicles. So, what’s a volunteer to do? Befriend French volunteers!

In our site, there are two amazing young women, Lucie Lou and Magali, who work with several local organizations on behalf of the French government. Thankfully, they are required to observe much looser guidelines and are actually provided an allowance to cover car rental. So, Noa and I spent the day driving through small villages amidst the Atlas Mountains.

Passing through Todgha Gorge, the road opens up into high plains that lie between mountain ranges. The ancient geology is breathtaking. It being a relatively low-traffic area, bridges are rare, so nearly a dozen times we needed to ford a flowing river.

In many respects, it reminded me of the Grand Canyon, but to be honest, it was even more beautiful. In part, I think, is the fact that people live here within this ancient landscape, whereas the Grand Canyon sits distant and removed from human habitation.Like so many beautiful things in America, there is an underlying expectation to “look, but don’t touch.”
