Gotta appreciate Ally Beardsley for their seeming love of playing characters that are at least a little stupid and pathetic while still knowing when they should have the character reel it in and get serious.

Are there some exceptions? Yes. Am I saying these characters aren't tragic? No.

But Liam, Kristen, and Lars all have very similar vibes to them and Ally truly commits to every bit and in fact intensifies it. It makes their characters a lot of fun. Their characters have some of the most intense moments in their respective seasons, and yet we still get moments like the president Kristen gag, Liam's absolutely awful attempts at flirting and connecting, and Lars just being Lars.

10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?

When I was. like. 8. i wrote this original story about five girls and a boy. it was, in short, very bad: none of the character traits were consistent, the plot moved along terribly, and scenes were messy. every chapter was in a different font and Oh Dear God was it unreadable.

and i fucking loved it. i was so proud of it. i still kind of am? 35 pages for an eight year old isn’t bad. but there are printed copies i still find around my house, and my mom still talks about it to this day, and every time i read it i wince.

i’m not sure if this is the definition of haunted, but it follows me around to this day. you maybe thought this was gonna be a fanfic, but this story. Oh God.

17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.

Gotta talk about fight or flight baybee!! okay so when i started this it was basically because i had many thoughts on the fact it was kristen’s siblings who convinced her to go during family in flames and not. her parents. and also the fact her parents names combined were McDonalds. that cracked me up. also actually i was talking to a lovely irl about this and they said “wait a character is Christian Applebees??” and i went ally beardsley how dare you. the google doc is titled ‘the mfing MacDonna Applebees’

i brainstormed a rudimentary layout for Mordred for this fic, as in i thought about the first floor and went ‘everything else doesn’t matter’. the chapel is canonically disconnected from the house but kristen also canonically has a secret passageway to tracker’s room, so i decided all the secret passageways link up and let people just. into the walls. kristen and riz are the only ones who have any semblance of confidence in there bc they sneak around so much. kristen uses the passageways mostly for tracker’s and bee’s rooms, but she knows how to get to the kitchen and about midway up the tower staircase.

bee is trans. i debated for a while whether her name was spelled Bee or Bea, but i decided on Bee bc i know a Bea and the vibes are. Different. kristen’s nickname for bricker is bricks, and bee calls him rick or ricks, and when they’re a bit older on their Fantasy Discord she Nicknames him Dick and kris doesn’t let Bricker change it back. bricker is bi; he kissed one of the luckstones under the bleachers and that’s what McDonalds was angry about. he’s also religious (bee goes i know the gods are real but i think i’m taking a step back please); he probably becomes a cleric of helio and does something similar to tracker in the sense he worships his own version of helio, not the widely accepted version.

they’re all two years apart: if kristen’s going into jr year, bee’s going into freshman, bricker’s going into seventh, and cork’s going into fifth. this means cork was seven or eight when kristen left, and you know, third graders are Little and have the object permanence of baboons, so. he’s fine. he’s not really in this fic sorry. when i listen to songs, i like to imagine animatics, and so fics are based around them often, and this one is no acception; the first line of the song is ‘i think it might rain today’ and a separate 3+1 line i was debating was ‘3 times kristen found her siblings in a storm and the one time she had them’.

also kristen needs therapy. she Will Not Get It.

32. What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you?

really any line from ‘For Everyone’ by Jason Reynolds. it’s such a good book. my boss at a camp i worked at gave it to me a couple years ago, and i cried reading it. if i had to pick a section: (id in alt text) (it hits different when formatted like it’s read aloud)

I love women, of every kind, and from the moment we saw the more abstract flexing Kristin in the trailer I knew Junior Year Kristin was hotter than ever. But something about her exact vibe has me, if anything, jealous of fans with more active social lives who have *met* girls like her, even dated them, because wow she's a mood. Kristin is a very polarizing character, much like her player Ally is. Even the youtube upload of Junior Year's trailer has comments hating on them and their chaotic, attention-grabbing antics, and I'd like to say I *get it* if you don't care for Ally. They are a lot, and feeling annoyed at it is valid. If you don't like Ally they are hard to tune out.

That said, a Dimension 20 main party without Ally Beardsley would be a vastly inferior product. Love them or hate them, they are the chaotic main character of the entire thing, in a very meta way. Random clutch nat 20's, *totally* off the wall antics and moving into strange spaces, and can we please appreciate the constant trans representation? Kristin might very well be their only cis character (unless junior year offers a change.) And while that might not be something everyone cares about, but considering how little positive trans representation there is in... well most media, really, we gotta celebrate when it's done right and my *god* Pete the Plug, Margret Encino, and debatably Liam (He might be cis but has some vauge trans energy) these characters are loud and interesting, them being trans is nowhere near the point of their existence (though Pete dealt with a transphobic family) and all of them are *critical* to the development of each season's story. Like I know DnD is a cooperative experience but Ally's big swings and power moves always feel so essential.

This is more an Ally post than a Kristin post. What can I say about her? She's a strong lesbian woman and a bold cleric, she's fantastic to follow and will *never* make a safe choice in her life. I'm curious if Tracker is still out of Solace, if they can still keep in touch with Crystals (I know the Bad Kids had trouble with that, but the Seven used their Cystals all over Spyre with no issues, potentially Gorgug fixed all that for everyone?) But each season she's going through a totally distinct character arc. I know "finding a god for me" was on paper the motivation in seasons 1 and 2, but in S1 that was because she didn't know who *she* was, and in S2 she learned more about gods and clerics, and thus how her new self-understanding aligns with her clerical connection to the divine. I doubt this new season is going to have a religious arc for her at all, Maybe some elements of earning alongside Cassandra, but I think the new arc might be more social, or maybe this season she'll have a more passive role, a more complete and supportive character for her freinds to bounce thier arcs off of.

I wanna expand on this a bit not only is the above true both parts

but something I learned as a GM is - if players want me to be "a matter mercer" or a brennan lee muligan, or an "aabria iyengar" tier GM, they need to be a Travis/Laura/Liam/Sam/Ashley/Marisha/Taliesin or Emily Axford, Lou Wilson, Siobhan Thompson, Ally Beardsley, Zac Oyama, and Brian Murphy type players

this isn't to mean "professional actors/voice actors/etc"

this DOES mean- look at the friendship between these players and GMS, look at the respect, love, enthusiasm and over all immersion both sides of the table bring

as a GM, I admit I bring my writing skill which means I'll do my damnedest to give a Tolkien level world building experience, or a Mercer level fantastic story, with a dash of Mulligan's "FUCK CAPITALISM!" rhetoric, but my players gotta wanna explore that world lol its gotta go both ways, and thats not a blame game, its a reminder - there are so many people out there to play with, don't lock yourself into the wrong table "because its all I can find" there are so many who'll be better fits for you- promise. Open yourself up to all that TTRPG has to offer you

entirely agree with the above, just wanna say though, no matter the skill level of player or GM: bring the enthusiasm you hope to get from the others. if you want casual, find casual tables. But if you want THAT IMMERSION, make sure you bring that commitment.

know your limits, know your preferences, and communicate ALWAYS with all at the table, because a game is a never ending conversation from start to finish where everyone there has to keep making sure everyone is having fun.

D&D going mainstream really messed up people's expectations cause chances are you're not gonna find a DM who has the free time, talent and resources to put on a tale that competes with Tolkien. you're gonna find your friend's roommate Phil who's read one of the manuals a few times and has to pause to get a calculator out to figure out how much damage your attack did and his story is blatantly ripping off a dragon age 2 side quest
