Who could forget the direct nod to Goncharov in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, a movie steeped in the retelling of that story.

White liberal vibes
You know, the other day, I was having a conversation with an old friend after her husband and I had gone out for a range day.
We were prepping food on their deck. I was grilling the meats because I don't care for professional sports, and thus I could stand to miss many major moments of whatever sportsball game was being watched inside, whilst simultaneously putting my modest background in sous chef employment to use for the first time in ages.
She and I discussed books we'd been reading recently, as their kids ran around swatting each other with toy lightsabers, and as a happenstance we wandered onto the subject of widespread illiteracy in the modern generation. This, of course, was accompanied by the requisite list of personal pet peeves with regards to poorly composed written communication (and a bafflingly coincident overreliance on such in digital format), the infectious rot played by social media in this trend, and the oft-confused distinction between reading a book yourself (like, you know, with your eyes) and listening to someone else read it for you.
One of the pet peeves mentioned by my friend was this unusual habit for a great swath of folks on the internet to write incomplete thoughts without context or punctuation, and expect others to understand whatever this unstructured nonsense is intended to convey. I recall chuckling at the time, as I've noticed this type of thing happening as far back as the MySpace days, and more recently across YouTube and Tumblr. My friend and I exchanged jokes, laughed, she sipped her beer, I sipped my bourbon, and around that time the potatoes were about done. So we went inside to eat.
I only mention this because it seems such strange luck you'd send me three words out of context like this in a puzzling display of the exact thing I was so recently laughing with my friend about.
I was a bit confused about how to respond at first, so I'll just say - whatever your intent - all three of those words are so utterly overused in today's world I'd regard them as having almost no remaining functional meaning whatsoever. I'll also recommend you do a bit of cursory research into where the term "liberal" originated, and a commensurate amount of research into just how many distinct ethnic groups the United States' federal government sweep under the umbrella label of "white" to get a sense of how hilariously reductive that term happens to be in a society that claims to care so much for so-called diversity. It's as stupidly, ridiculously oversimplified as the terms "Black", "Asian", and "Middle-Eastern".
All that said, hope you have a lovely night. Drink lots of water.

I have been instructed from the Powers that Be that tonight we must return to the Town-upon-Gorkon. And things seem... dire. The town is barren, and the Shabnak-adyr may be breathing down our very necks. Tonight... we are all joining the roundalay of Gobo's Taglur. We are playing a game for children. Pathologic. The Marble Nest.

My first true fandom as we know it {probably Arthurian Legend was my first and truest fictional love}, and one I have been faithful to for over 25 years. Honestly never please talk to me about it, because I have rabid opinions about literally everything. And lastly, I only included tv/movies here because books and rpgs would require an entire three or four Long Ass Posts all of their own. Much Love.

Random Character Asks: 13 & 14 (McCoy)
Thank you for the ask Leni!
13. Dumbest thing they've ever done:
In This Side of Paradise, the way McCoy talks about his broken ribs always made me feel like Kirk knew about the whole incident. I really wanted to base my answer to this question off of that, so here's what I came up with:
I headcanon that McCoy and Kirk met on the Republic, when Kirk was an ensign and McCoy was an assistant doctor. [leni I know you're an expert on Kirk's timeline I'm sorry if I got ranks/dates/ships mixed up LOL.] One day, on an away mission, Kirk wants to go spelunking in this cave because he heard the crystals down in the depths were beautiful and the challenge of it would be fun. McCoy heard that there were cool bats living deep down in the caves, like really cool bats, so he decides to go with him.
They get down to the lower levels of the cave just fine, no incidents or anything. But McCoy gets so excited when he sees the bats that he doesn't pay attention to where he's going and falls into a small crevice, shattering his ribs. It was hell on earth hauling him back up, but they managed it somehow. Kirk never lets him live it down.
14. Most heroic moment:
My most favorite badass McCoy moment is, of course, the scene in Space Seed where Khan is holding a knife to his throat. Without even flinching that man looks Khan straight in the eye and tells him where would be best to cut to kill him. Like damn. That scene gives me shivers LOL. The deleted scene between McCoy and Khan in that episode is also super good! I also really love McCoy's whole role in Star Trek 6. I love the scene where he rushes to try and save Gorkon's life, despite the strained diplomatic situation and the mad as hell ship full of Klingons. He doesn't even really know what he's doing, but he still tries everything he can to save his life. He fails, but I feel like that scene just says SO MUCH about his character, I love it.
Not to keep rambling about McCoy lol, but while I'm at it might as well also share this quote from the Search for Spock: "I choose the danger - hell of a time to ask!"

Star Trek: Klingon Academy
Original Release: 2000
Developer: 14 Degrees East
Publisher: Interplay
Platform: PC
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I couldn’t fully enjoy the full extinct of this game due to my colourblindness. The interface colours, while fitting in with the Klingon style, makes it almost impossible for me to read any of the words in the HUD. Even lowering the resolution to make the HUD appear larger didn’t help, so I had to refer to the manual for the list of button presses I needed for the interface system in order to play.
Klingon Academy a follow on from Starfleet Academy, with similar gameplay. The bridge view is removed, instead offering a first person or third person view of the ship. While it was nice to look at, it was better playing in the first person view anyway. Klingon Academy introduces a “Verbal Orders System”, which uses all the number keys to give a large list of commands, requiring 3 or 4 button presses. It’s not very easy to do while in the middle of combat using a joystick to fly around. You can order your helm officer to fly, but they’ll crash the ship.
It’s a shame as there’s a lot of advanced tactics buried deep in this system. You can send marines to capture enemy ships overload shields and weapons for a short boost but risking damage and subsystem targeting – this feature would be better refined in Bridge Commanded, aided by your officers not being awful at piloting the ship.
The piloting issues also extend to the enemy. While Klingons are known for ramming as a last resort, the Federation (well, simulated Federation) in this seem to love it, with collisions running a lot of missions. You have even more options available to you by using nearby phenomena such as gas giants and planetary rings to your advantage. It’s a shame that there’s so much depth, yet most battles end up slowly pummelling each other while circling close with you trying to avoid getting rammed.
Throughout the game you’ll be treated to a ton of live action clips starring Christopher Plummer and David Warner as Chang and Gorkon, who do a wonderful job and the game gives a great insight into Klingons, as well as serving as a prequel to The Undiscovered Country. There’s a lot to like about Klingon Academy, it’s just a shame about the interface and enemy AI.
