it's extremely critical that you see the photo of the perp walk for luigi mangione as being propaganda. i've seen so many people wave it off and instead fawn over his looks. and trust me, i know it ended up being kind of pathetic and weird - but please don't brush it off as a "modelling opportunity" for him. it's a fucking terrifying message the police are sending.

i want to make a few comparisons here, in case you're not from the US or familiar with why the perp walk thing is something to pay attention to. just to set the groundwork for why this is a purposeful, unusual, and cruel act by the nyc police - for why this is not a common occurrence and for why that matters.

the prosecution alleges the show of force is due to the charge of "terrorism." for comparison, in june 2015, tsarnaev was found guilty for the boston marathon bombing, which killed 3 people and injured hundreds. his actions are considered to be an act of domestic terrorism. i have spent the last hour looking through google for pictures of similar to mangione's perp walk - and so far, i have found zero. i also just do not personally remember a moment like that, despite living in boston at the time.

they allege that luigi is a stone-cold killer who carried out a longterm plan, making him particularly dangerous. again for comparison: in nyc, recently cory martin was found guilty of the killing of brandy odom. the murder was planned and premeditated to steal insurance money. and yet no staged perp walk. why didn't her life matter enough for a "show of force"?

but mangione gets paraded by a veritable army of police officers as if he is a rabid animal. for a single citizen who allegedly killed one other single citizen, the "largest perp walk ever" occurs.

so what is the "strong message" that the mayor and the police were trying to send here? the mayor speaks as if mangione is already convicted of terrorism. there is a very thin number of people who feel threatened by the CEO's death. none of us felt like mangione needs to be under massive armed guard.

the message is that you shouldn't resist. they are trying to "make an example" of him - that if you behave badly and kill a single rich person, you'll be treated as if you killed hundreds of people. you will be treated worse than a man who was found guilty of terrorism. you will be considered guilty without trial. the message is that the rich are a protected class, and you cannot touch them without massive punishment. they are trying to prevent a revolution by showing dominance and force against you.

the message is that the police are a puppet of the wealthy and that the law is not equally applied across class disparity. it is "some are more equal than others." it is "one life is more precious than another."

the show of force wasn't for luigi. it was for us. it was a warning. they are trying to remind us who is really in control.

When he finally woke up to marvel at the fact that he was alive. Perhaps a bit charred but still breathing even if he was being helped with an oxygen mask. The second thought that came to him was to worry about Bella. Between the nurses and watching the news, since there was barely anything else he could do as he recovered, he had gotten a good gist of how bad things had gotten. The nurses had already told him how overwhelmed the hospitals were and Keigo guessed that Bella was helping out where she could. 

As much as he was worried about her, he had no idea how to approach her. Not after the video that got released and brought to light everything that he, and mostly Endeavor, had done. Already he was seeing the backlash pop up on social media regarding both of them. Comments about him murdering Jin and then how he learned from his dad on how to be a murderer were the ones he saw the most. The latter Keigo found it funny as he didn’t think anyone was aware that the Commission had done that. Or Dabi had decided to change that part of his narrative to suit his own needs. Whatever the case, he was worried about his public image paled in comparison to how he worried about Bella’s reaction to finding out the truth about him.

It was one reason why he was glad that actually searching for her was delayed. At first, it was because he didn’t have any way to contact her. Either his phone had gotten burned or crushed in the fight. He did end up with a replacement, which was good since he needed it actually to communicate, but then he got caught up in formulating a plan to try and win the public over. Meetings that went into the late hours were the last thing Keigo thought he’d be doing right then but it tended to happen as he, Endeavor, and Best Jeanist planned the press conference to start mending everything. Even during those meetings, he would be on his phone and most of the time just staring at the text messages he and Bella had exchanged before he went undercover. He even reread the little messages she had sent him and he couldn’t reply to them due to not wanting anyone to be able to track her down. Those he had already committed to memory for just how often he had read them before everything went to hell. But sitting there while Jeanist and Endeavor discussed things, they tended to leave him be as long as he gave some sort of bodily sign that he agreed or disagreed with them, making the time go by a little quicker.

The downside to doing that was it always made him want to reach out to her. However, he wanted to be a bit better before that. Primarily he just wanted to have fewer bandages and actually be able to hold a conversation with his own voice than have his phone do all the work. Neither of those took that long thankfully. Shortly after he started to meet with Jeanist and Endeavor, the doctor overseeing his recovery gave the okay for most of the bandages to be removed. His back was still healing but he didn’t need the special cooling jacket anymore as long as he changed the bandages regularly. The only reason his neck still needed to be bandaged was just to give his skin a chance to heal a bit more. It was enough for Keigo to go and talk Jeanist into giving him a proper haircut before he set out to find his girlfriend.

One of the bright sides of constantly being in and out of the hospital was he had gotten to know the staff fairly well. He had heard that the hospital had been in close contact with one another given everything that was going on. All he had to do was mention how he was trying to find out where his girlfriend was possibly working and the nurses he had gotten close to were more than eager to help. Keigo sort of thought that eagerness came from actually being able to reunite family, friends, and couples after such a terrible disaster. Even if he wasn’t sure how he should feel. He wanted nothing more than to be with her but given how she possibly found out about his past, well, he wasn’t sure if he would be welcomed back. He knew that Bella didn’t seem to care about it when he had dropped hints. But none of that had included the fact that he had literally murdered someone and was accompanied by a nice high-definition photo of said murder. 

Regardless, the next free moment he got he headed over to where she was working and waited outside for her to come out. Yet again he had thought of at least texting her. But Keigo figured if he was going to be dumped then he wanted to actually hear it rather than simply being ghosted or having texted to him. In the end, he just decided to wait and see. He had his fill of hospitals for the time being too. Being outside was something he felt he needed right then. So he got out his phone to kill some time while he waited. 

Thankfully he didn’t have to wait long. Looking up from scrolling through one of his social media feeds and spotting her was like a shock to his system. The world seemed to stop for a moment as he simply stared at her. It was short-lived as he soon realized that he was running towards her. The whole thing was a blur until he finally felt her in his arms and her lips pressing against hers in a heated kiss.

I hate when someone tells me something that is Simply Incorrect, but in a way that I can't correct them without feeling like a know-it-all killjoy

like when my dad was moving out of state and let me take a bunch of open liquor bottles, including two bottles of absinthe, and he let me know that one tasted better but the other one had stronger ~effects~ which he went on to describe, and I had to be like 'woooah :O okay cool' instead of 'absinthe is not actually psychoactive and what you were feeling was a placebo if anything'

Okay. It's time for an AI rant.

My nephew is 13 years old. Whenever he writes a paper for school, I check it over and fix all of his mistakes for him. He said to me, "Maybe I'll proofread your paper for you in exchange," meaning one of the scholarly articles I write for work. I said, "Cool," and gave him the file. And he said, "Well, this is full of errors! See, you always say you have a lot to correct on my stuff, and look at all the stuff you got wrong!" And I said, surprised, "What? Where?" Because I'm sure there are typos in the draft I sent him, but not, like, that many.

And then he pointed to the screen and said, "Look at all the blue and red lines you have."

And I said, "Yeah, but those are wrong. Like, those are blue and red lines I'm ignoring because the computer is wrong." And then I paused and added, "You know you can't proofread a paper by just looking at the red and blue lines, right?" And he gave me the blankest look, because that clearly is EXACTLY what he thinks. And it became even clearer suddenly why, whenever I correct something on his paper, his immediate reaction is, "It didn't have a blue or red line."

There's a very good reason for that: THAT'S BECAUSE THE COMPUTER ISN'T SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT IT WAS WRONG.

I am so tired of being sold the idea that computers are better than humans and so we should just outsource everything to them, which is clearly the lesson my nephew is absorbing in U.S. middle school. COMPUTERS ARE NOT BETTER THAN HUMANS. Like, maybe they are better at humans at crawling through rubble to find people trapped inside. They are also better at preserving things in a searchable format. Things like that. Very limited circumstances.

I don't want to sound alarmist but everything I hear about people using generative AI freaks me out. It's not just that I'm freaked out by people being like, "I use it to write novels!" (Although I don't see how they do, I have tried to have it write fiction for me and the output was truly terrible.) But I recognize my bias around creative writing and so no one needs to credit my views on artificial writing. But! Other things are alarming, too! "I use it to brainstorm x, y, or z." But...why? Why not just...use your own brain...to...brain...storm? The computer doesn't even have a brain to brainstorm with! And you might be like, "But it comes up with things that my brain would never think of!" So would other people! You could also brainstorm with other people! Or even through Google to see what other people have thought before you (not AI). Please don't belittle the wonder of thinking.

I just feel like the marketing around generative AI boils down to "Wouldn't it be easier not to use your own brain to think about things?" Everyone. No. It would not be. Please just trust me on this. I'm not just an old person who is out of touch with technology or something. I promise. USE YOUR BRAINS. IT WILL BE OKAY.
