What’s in a name? That which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet

They’re eating dinner when Osha asks the question. She’s sitting on the stone steps in their cave, cradling a bowl of soup in her hands. She looks relaxed, one leg propped on the step, the other curled under her.

“I still can't believe I never heard of you back at the temple. You're not that old,” there's mischief in her eyes as she adds that last part. Surprised, Qimir drops his spoon into his soup.

He wonders if she minds, if she would prefer they were closer in age. Imagines how it would be if he knew her before. What it would be like to train together as padawans and share their first experiences. Imagines sneaking out of the Jedi temple with her to lie in a meadow, young and innocent. Kissing for the first time, surrounded by flowers and sunlight and life.

It makes him think about his time as Vernestra's padawan. The years he spent training under her were nothing like the vision he just conjured. He had a different name then, already half-forgotten and alien to him. It belonged to a different person – a person he hasn't been for a long time. Even if she heard of him, she wouldn't know it, she wouldn’t recognise that other name. And who's to say what lies Vernestra spun when she returned to Coruscant without her padawan? He knows her well enough to know she would never let the story of his fall to the dark side see the light of day. Would never let the world learn how she maimed him and left him half-dead for the local predators to finish the job for her. No, she would make sure to control the narrative. He has a feeling even he wouldn’t recognise the version of the story she presented to the Jedi.

Would he still be the boy he used to be if he knew Osha back then? Would having her by his side keep him in the light? He thinks it’s more likely it would make him fall sooner. Because try as he might, he can’t imagine having Osha in his life and not loving her with a burning passion. Having her in his life and meekly adhering to the ridiculously strict tenets of the Jedi code.

Qimir may not be the name given to him by his parents, but he only spent a few years with them, barely remembers life before he was taken by the Jedi anyway, so does it even matter? This is the name he chose for himself. As a cover at first, yes, but then – then it was the name Osha knew him by. Just like his bumbling alter ego, it holds fragments of his true self. Even if the name wasn't his originally, he wants to be Qimir. Osha's Qimir.

By popular demand, and by 'popular demand' I mean literally one person, I'm sharing my writing for the first time in years😅 Please be gentle.

I've been turning the issue of Qimir's name in my head over and over again. Pondering the significance of name vs. identity, and whether his real name is actually important when he must have changed so much ever since he became the Stranger, like a magical orb. Last night I couldn't sleep until I got this out of my head and on paper (well, on a google doc but, you know). I have two notebook pages of bullet points of things I'd like to see explored in a continuation of Osha and Qimir's story and the name reveal, or lack thereof, is one of them. Who knows, maybe now that I got this one out I'll latch onto another and cook something up to be read by me and exactly one other person.

the ellipsus 'export to ao3 code' worked very well but i am back using google docs for a few reasons:

the ellipsus support website is a discord server. fuck that shit, pay for a forum so i can just look things uo without bothering anyone on a program you don't even own and that i find anxiety-inducing, you cheap gits.

no colours of text, which might change but until then my system of notes vs text doesn't work.

it seemed to disconnect a lot and the advice on the site was don't worry just keep typing, WTF you expect me to risk losing MORE of my work? where even is it if it's not online! is that why i had to unintuitively download a dictionary for an online thing? (oh look there's no forum i could go and check that on...)

it looks pretty though. i'd prefer to use it and google is bad but i am used to the badness now and it was less full of anxiety triggers. :'(

This was the moment that sparked the creation of The Crow Cries at Midnight... Which means the anniversary of the AU's initial brainstorming is coming up in less than a month. The original outline on google docs was also started that very day. I remember spending like eight hours in the Inverted Fate server spitballing the idea and at that point, I was filled with immense motivation. At the time of writing this post, I've written/drafted over 60 chapters of the fic and am hard at work in plotting out what's to come. Hundreds of thousands of words written in eleven months. It's crazy to think about how such a simple idea has evolved into something so huge. The original outline doc was over 600 pages. The second was also hundreds of pages, and now I am on the third. My outlining process has also evolved a lot, becoming more akin to first drafts, like so:

(Here's a lil' teaser for Chapter 54. ...Yes, I know the doc says 53. AO3 counts the Sae and Naoto interlude as a numbered chapter, so there's a slight discrepancy in the numbers in the outline vs AO3.) I don't intend to rush this by any means, but I can honestly see myself finishing the Persona 4 fic by the end of 2024, or at least having a very solid plan for how it will end.

Warning Writers and Artist

If you see this or something similar in your messages or asking about if your art uses AI or if you use AI for your fics, do not engage them directly.

There is someone going around that is outright accusing people of using AI for works of theirs and asking to prove it. Either through showing their process with a video but the platform they used or the programs and are just being pushy about it. And while it can feel tempting to answer, it is just to get to harass artist and writers into complying about AI in any works. And from a cursory glance, they seem be going after popular blogs/ artists/ or specific ships that are being asked to be questioned. (I will not name which ships as that is not my business but I will tag in ones I am familiar with).

As for the person that asked me this, I will be candid and say this: Asking someone if they use AI in their works is not conductive to ones time. I only have a cursory understanding of AI vs Human in the arts debate as I know there is a lot of discussions about it and yes, it is scary times because of the scraping of fics and art. I considers myself an artist/ writer, so I am a strong believer in human touch as being necessary for any artistic front. But the subject of AI tools is not something I know all details about and cannot provide an answer I would be confident I can provide a suitable answer to this conversation. Also keep in mind - Microsoft and/ google docs use AI for editing purposes or suggestions unless you turn it off, so make of that what you will. (Or if you have a plug in with AI that give a suggestion of what to write in some websites so there is that too).

But if you are the person that I have heard that is going around and asking people for proof of creation - it causing more headaches than good and asking for "proof of it" is also potentially harmful for showing this unnecessary proof. Such as exposing someones computer background information or anything on their computer or names on files linking actual real life people.

There are ways to make sure that art is not scraped - such as artist finding programs to prevent their images from being used for AI searches to writers using sites like Ao3 that offer locking works from getting scrapped from AI that at as guests that are not registered to the system. It is not prefect, but it is a start. If that is what you are looking to accomplish, then promote the good ways to prevent AI from scraping works from content creator and or finding new methods to promote human artist/ writers in fandoms.

Asking me if I use AI is not one of them. And no, I will not be proving myself or showing off my works for anyone's amusement to rile up drama. If you want to ask about my genuine thought process or ideas for fics and concerns if I use AI, ask in the comments below. Let's talk publicly about this.

Otherwise, I see this as just someone trying get me to cause drama before more content comes out for a certain fandom. And I don't have the time nor patience for people looking to cause issues because you are bored.

Oops I sent the last ask too early lol (about Beneath Your Shallows and mermaid Armand) but I was going to ask if you had any headcanons you could share about that AU because I lovee your writing and i can't stop thinking about it 🙏

Thank you so much for this you’re so sweet, this made my day when I got it and it made my day all over again whenever I remembered it! 🥹💙 I am so sorry it’s taken me so long to respond—I was traveling and then I got sick and then I came home and got sick with something else LOL. 

This AU is a little tricky for me—normally I have so many headcanons about all my universes, but with this one I feel it’s a story that is locked into a very specific location (the water) and their roles as human vs otherworldly sea creature, so it’s much more rigid and I have to work harder to be creative with them!

That said, there are things that I thought about when I was trying to write the sequel (still languishing in Google Docs, RIP):

I wanted to borrow a bit from what Anne did in Devil’s Minion and really emphasize how becoming attached to something inhuman will destroy you (I already called Lestat a “ruined thing” in the first fic lmao). But Lestat really does attach to Armand and he projects a lot on him that he doesn’t know really whether or not Armand is capable of returning those sentiments! Armand’s a nonverbal creature that operates purely on instinct, but Lestat’s just a little human guy and he’s really losing the plot and anthropomorphizing Armand! He obsesses about seeing him, he can never tell anyone about him, he spends every waking hour he can at the beach, he sleeps there until it gets too cold to do so, and he loses his mind if Armand isn’t there waiting for him—it feels like rejection, abandonment! Meanwhile Armand is just crounching on a live crab behind some rocks.

They do have a sort of means of communication through giving gifts. 🥹 Of course Lestat’s doing it with human sentiments, like if he were courting a someone with romantic and/or sexual intention. Armand’s more like a crow, seeing shiny stuff and bringing it to Lestat. In addition to the pearls, he brings him sea glass, shells, and jewelry from sunken ships. Lestat discovered Armand will take an interest in his food and offers it to him (mostly meat but sometimes fruit, and although Armand is a carnivore, he will sometimes put it his mouth out of curiosity. He likes peaches).

Lestat does still have to… exist, and he needs money for that. He does work as an actor and sometimes he acts out his parts for Armand who either ignores him completely or stares at him with the same wide, unblinking eyes as my cat when you dangle the feather toy in front of them. Thing is lol Armand doesn’t understand a word Lestat says but he’s attracted to the sound and the movement. And Lestat is like- “oh he loves me 🥹🥰”

Armand is not immortal but he will live for thousands of years, and yes, he will outlive Lestat. ☹️

Armand’s kind mate for life (one and done) and he does have the ability to enchant Lestat should Lestat ever try and leave him. Armand can’t read thought but he can feel intention, so he would feel if Lestat were pulling away from him. It is abnormal that he mated with a human and unfortunate too, given Lestat’s lifespan.

Armand is a very complex but also very base creature—he just needs to eat and procreate and be by the sea. He does not need to sleep but he does feel physical pain, like when laying his eggs.

I imagine the eggs to be like shark eggs—there’s a kind that are actually called mermaid’s purses!

They’re going to have lots of beautiful freaky little half-human, half-mermaid children. Lestat will be horrified watching them come out 💙

this post has been going around asking if people prefer 'format a' (single spacing) vs 'format b' (extra spacing) on ao3---

---and the general consensus in the poll and in the tags is that not only do people vastly prefer a, they very much despise and often refuse to read format b.

another theme among the tags is from writers, specifically those that use google docs, complaining that format b is just how ao3 formats their writing if they are copying and pasting into rich text editor from google docs. so if they want to have format a (the vastly preferred format among readers) they have to manually go through and back space everything to get rid of the extra spacing, which is tedious at best.

and while this is true if you are manually double spacing your paragraphs in google docs like below (pressing enter twice before starting a new paragraph--see the "|" that indicates a manually created line/space)

you can also just format your google dog to add a space before/after a paragraph (doesn't matter which, but you only need one) from the 'line and spacing' drop down menu on the toolbar

and it'll make it look like below automatically with just pressing the 'enter' key once (see how it's not a full line of space between the paragraphs, ie: you couldn't type a line of text there like before).

Then, when you copy and paste into ao3, it will be formatted like 'format a' automatically instead of having to manually go through the work and get rid of the double spacing! :)

I can tell you it doesn't get better for a bit :D If I remember correctly, the next chapter on AO3 is going to be- :D hahaha. You'll need to read the trigger warnings on that one. I haven't really thought about becoming a writer. This has juat been my hobby and how I spend my time decompressing after work. I have joked that if I turn the Google docs I have into the proper size (letter vs A4 I believe for books) it would break Google docs. But also, I've already broken Google docs because BSH now spans 3 docs since the first two broke :D We have surprised To You in word count a WHILE AGO too.

Technically, there are two editors (one is there to edit, the other is there for help me scheme up ideas sometimes against the first editor). You maybe shouldn't envy them 😂😂😂 every time I say "I have an idea" to them it turns into "Tristen, what does that mean??? WHO ARE YOU HURTING???" It's my favorite part or the day 🤭🤭

The story is a bit further than what is posted on AO3. (44 chapters rn in total) so we are dealing with Mouse still and the dynamics~ I have so much planned still so I'm :D always writing. I'm getting close to finishing the second notebook I'm writing by hand.

Thinking about the scenario where, after the DSOD nonsense, Mokuba convinces Seto to let him go to high school (thanks for planting that idea into my brain). And Atem, freshly emerged in his 16 year old body, with little memory of modern education, decides, fuck it, I’ll go to high school too. And Mokuba is SO mad, he’s seething, like I already have to share Nii-sama with you, can’t I have ONE thing that’s completely MINE?

I don’t really think Atem would go back to high school but it would be funny, like Isono picks up both of them from school, and he’s sweating buckets in the car while Mokuba creates RANCID vibes and Atem is like … :)? Atem tries to get Yugi and co to tutor him, but they don’t remember SHIT from high school. Mokuba begrudgingly becomes friends with Atem and then they terrorize Seto together. Yugi plays therapy to everyone involved through it all.

i love any and all kinds of atem vs. mokuba petty passive aggressive "who are we to each other" / "who are you and what do you want with my brother" drama so i'm intrigued. you should open up a google doc and write some scenes and string them into a cohesive narrative and hit POST NEW WORK on AO3 so the people can read this

Love that I haven't updated my izueri (NOT SHIPPED, THEY ARE LIKE SIBLINGS) apocalypse fic in over a year now, (by like a week) but I still keep going and reloading my works page on AO3 to see if someone new has read it (the answer is almost always no)

Part of the issue is I planned it all out, and have been constantly thinking about it for the past year, but I had no concept of time passing since my last update. Like, I know now, but I had no clue it had been in Aug of last year until around a month or two ago.

I'm ready to write the next chapter, and even began writing it, but in my usual read through of what I've written before, I noticed that there were some inconsistencies with supply usage vs what they had actually gotten, so I corrected that, but then I realized I had to double check, so I've now gone through and tallied up supplies in a Google doc (that I'll probably move to a Spreadsheet at some point) for every chapter other than the last one (had to stop to do something), and now I can't finish.

Ugh, executive dysfunction sucks my dudes. I just wanna finish the list and write my fic. So. Badly. But I can't and it makes me want to scream to the sky.

hello, some writer questions! 1) what time are the fics due on the 2nd? 2) how do we submit - pdf, gdocs access, etc 3) can we get any more info on the summaries - mostly word count max for the summary, and for author notes that might be relevant to artists if that's separate. 4) if ships are listed in their own column or whatnot, can we specify main ships vs minor ships? I don't want to mislead people but also don't want to hit on a hard no for a minor ship. thanks!!!

Thanks for the ask!!

Fics will be due at Writer Check-in 4, which will run like the other check-ins, meaning writers will have 48 hours after the form is sent out to fill it out and submit their fic. If anyone cannot make this deadline, there is an extension available until September 8. We will put out last calls for fics in the days leading up to September 8 so that the due date does not come as a surprise. We will still accept fics after that (until December 30), but they will be automatically assigned to Doodle Tier.

The submissions will be completed using a Google Form. On the Submission form, writers will give us their own information, and then for each of their fics: - Relationships (romantic, queerplatonic, platonic, and background) - Rating of the fic - Whether or not artists need to be 18+ - Warnings (with space to elaborate and add your own notes for artists) - (Optional) Up to 10 tags* - Summary - Upload the fic as a single document. Miscrosoft Word or Google Docs is preferred. We will also accept plaintext files, markdown files, and html files.

Summaries should be 250 words or fewer, with a hard limit of 300 words (for the sake of artists who have a lot of summaries to scroll through). Here is a brief presentation with some suggested exercises to build a summary for Art Claims! Though we don't have specific requirements for the content of the summary, we recommend that summaries give a complete overview of your story i.e., you should treat it as a publisher pitch rather than an AO3 summary or teaser. This is your space to talk to the artists, so anything you want them to know about your fic should go here and/or in your tags. Warnings will have their own additional space.

Ships will have their own section!! On the Art Claims site, artists will have the option to sort summaries by Art Tier or by relationship. Your summary will appear under each of the major relationships present in your fic (romantic, queerplatonic, and platonic). You will also be able to list any background relationships that are present, but your summary will not appear under the sections of the site dedicated to those relationships.

*Tags: The optional 10 tags are for Art Claims only. For posting, you may tag your fic however you would like. I was going to comment on your last post, but I had too many words. So, behold! Here are my words!

This is the Astarion/Tav I've been waiting to see. An after game fic where they have to build up from what was started in the game, where they are still working through all the feelings from that traumatic life changing event they all went through. I love this angle of the friendship route, because I too think that he needs friendship and not someone putting any demands on his body and just be there for him. Buuuuut I also see his need to make his own choices and that he may want intimacy, even sexual intimacy, at his own pace. Hell, he obviously wants cuddles and companionship. And the thought of depriving him of that makes me sad. Like big sad.

Also, I want to mention something specific that I feel you are doing so well with Astarion's voice. And it's the ability to turn off his charismatic facade wording he uses and talk in a more comfortable/vulnerable 'him' way, but without making him sound weird. Sometimes, when authors do this, they lose his charm and he doesn't sound like himself anymore. He would still be sly and charismatic and impatient, but not trying so hard as we see him most of the time with his 'honeyed' words. I like how you voice him so much. Is this really first fic you've written? Because I'm floored by your voices and pacing and sexual tension? It's all so good!

Uhhhh, I'm not sure where I was going with this. I just really love your fic. It's great, I can't wait for more.

PS. I hate using honeyed words all the time to describe the way he talkes, but poetical fuck boy words is the only other way I can think of to describe the way he speaks. Maybe I need more coffee.

First off! Thank you not only for this amazingly thorough feedback, but also for dropping a reply on ao3 🥺🩷 usually people will do either one or the other!

Isn't it wonderful how you can just explore the want vs need dilemma with Astarion? It's a common theme throughout his journey with Tav. What he wanted never mattered, and he often mixes what he wants with what he needs, which I find to be very realistic. It happens quite often in real life, too. Sometimes, what we want is not what we need and vice versa. Also, the scars of his trauma are still very much present and since they remained friends, he never really got to heal in terms of intimacy, so it's still very easy for him to slip into that mask of using sweet words and physical contact to establish intimacy. It's all he's ever known, after all.

Oh, that is such a specific and wonderful praise! Voicing Astarion is a challenge, and it's really up to each person to try to write him in a believable way. I am trying my best, but I still feel insecure at times 🥺💔 so thank you so much for saying these reassuring words. It's not my first fic 😅 I was writing for Miguel O'Hara just a couple of months ago and have been reading/writing fanfiction for over 13 years 🥸

Welcome to Let’s Talk Whump, a series of interviews that spotlight the amazing people in our whump community! I’m Malice and I’ll be your host today. 

Here today to talk all things whumpy is the fabulous @actress4him!

We’re thrilled to have you here, @actress4him! Let’s start with a non-whump fact or two about yourself!

I go by Jada! I’m a mom of two girls, ages 6 and 8, and it’s a blast watching them play all the whumpy things we did as children and wondering if they’ll grow up to be whumpers, too. When I’m not writing, I enjoy creating cosplay, occasionally drawing, and going on adventures with my family.

Let’s get straight to the point! What does the term whump mean to you? 

Anything where the character goes through a hard time, physically or emotionally, or ideally, both! And we’re actually allowed to focus on it and see the beginning, middle, and aftermath.

And how did you find the whump community? Anything specific that made you want to join?

It all started on fanfiction.net with the hurt/comfort tag, then led to AO3, where I learned of Bad Things Happen Bingo and first started seeing the term whump. That prompted me to create a Tumblr account, so that I could participate in all these whump events I was hearing about, and the rest is history!

Has your view on whump changed since you joined? Maybe your choice of OC vs Fandom?

When I first joined I was solely writing fanfiction, though I did write a series with an OC 

insert, and I had been writing original stories for most of my life. It took a bit of time and seeing how well other people’s OCs were received on Tumblr to get the courage to go back to writing my own characters and universes. 

And now everyone’s favourite bit: let’s talk whump tropes! Do you have nay particular favourites?

Lady whump, if that counts as a trope! Also captivity whump, restraints of any kind, especially gags/muzzles and stress positions, using whumpees against each other, playing on fears, whipping, stabbing, touch-aversion, even better when combined with touch-starvation…I could go on.

They’ve all got to be in my top favs too! Do you mind sharing a couple of your favourite pieces that you’ve written?

Oh my, that’s hard to decide. If I’m allowed to pick two, I’d first say Again, the opening piece for my series Obsession. The writing muse was just flowing that day and I always liked the way that one turned out.

Then from my favorite series, The Shadow of Death, my other favorite piece is I Will Punish Your Friend for Your Failure. That was a bingo prompt that I had way too much fun writing, there’s just so much pain all around for both the characters and so much angst to go along with it!

Damn, I love the lady whump in“Again”! So good. Do you mind sharing what your writing routine looks like?

I do most of my writing at night after my kids are in bed, usually between 10-11pm. I also sneak in writing time while they’re in dance class, though I do more rp during the day than personal writing. I have been known to get struck with a certain sentence that I don’t want to forget and quickly open Google Docs on my phone to add it, but most of the time I need to sit down with my laptop and get the words flowing to get much done.

And is there an easy thing for you to write? Or something you struggle with writing? 

Dialogue usually comes easily to me, especially when characters get angry. That seems to be when they have a tendency to take over the plot and do whatever they want! 

My biggest writing struggle is battle scenes, which is unfortunate considering the number of characters I’ve created that need to have physical fights fairly often. 

GIve us a sneak peak! Is there anything you're working on at the moment? 

Currently I’m putting the most work into the Soldier Boy AU with my OC Kamaria. I’m not entirely sure how it’s going to end yet, since it started out as a simple idea that I thought would only take 2-3 parts and I’m now on part 6, but it’s been a fun ride so far. 

I’ve also been having fun brainstorming, role playing, and writing a bit of Kamaria’s Royal AU, and am hoping that my brain will let me write another chapter of Liliana’s story sometime soon.

Is there any writing advice you’d like to share?

For me, what works best against writer’s block is having multiple series/WIPs so that I can bounce around to whatever is inspiring me at the moment. It’s when I try to force myself to write something that I’m not feeling that I start getting stuck and bored. And when the block still hits, I do a lot of reading - of others’ works and my own old ones! - and roleplaying and brainstorming with friends and searching for prompts to get inspired again. Most of all, though, just be patient with yourself when the muse is in hiding! It’ll come back eventually.
