Todays Word Of The Day is: Benefic
Benefic originates from the Latin beneficus(kind). The word is based on bene(well) and facere(to do or make). English use began in the 14th century.

Hank McCoy, bless his dorky heart, would absolutely do the "bear face" on a dating profile.
I can only imagine people losing their minds at the Xavier University and seeing their chunky hunky professor online.

Had an amazing time at ghost files live tonight!! Met some amazing people and the boys (and Lizzie) were fantastic!! There was no animosity which was great and y’all,,,,, are in for such a treat with the new season,,, the short clip we saw was fucking insane!!!!
Also!! They did live Too Many Spirits and everyone started to chant Chug at Ryan (he failed pretty quickly lmaooo) it was so chaotic. Lots of yelling and cheering for Greggs!
I think to sum it all up in what Shane said which is: ‘the only time we’ve had an audience as loud and ballsy as this one was in Florida’

some thoughts about the pressures of trialing in dog sports and the emotional environment of trials, partially inspired by this post by the beautiful @mongrelization
this post happened to come at a time when I was at a decision point in my trial career with mav. he had just started refusing jumps (i thought it was a training issue at the time, i now know he was in pain) and he wasn't having fun. we were disconnected in the ring, with him choosing to go visit friends or just blow past obstacles without attempting them. it was frustrating and it was such a stark contrast from our training runs (not flawless but immeasurably better than our performances in the ring) and i was making jokes (as everyone does!) about mav being the worst, etc, etc.
except they weren't jokes.
they sounded like jokes and they even felt like jokes in the moment, but looking back i can confidently see that i was frustrated and resentful and the "lighthearted jokes" from other competitors and from myself were just fueling the fire. i saw darcies post shortly after a particularly frustrating trial where we just couldn't connect, i was trying to decide whether to push through and fix our issues or give up completely on agility.
her post wasn't an epiphany, i probably would've gotten there eventually, but her post that said, essentially hey its fucked up to make those jokes about your dog and its fucked up for people to make those jokes about your dog and thats not how a trial should be - something clicked. its NOT how it should be.
i took a break from trialing in everything and cut training way back and just took all the pressure off of mav while i got my internal emotional environment back on track. im a really competitive person and its hard to consciously dial that back, but more than that, it's legitimately embarrassing when things go wrong with people watching you. if your default is humor about it (like mine), its a hard shift to not make jokes about your dog when things go wrong. but its an important and necessary shift.
i started trialing him again after about 3 months off, very lightly. i stopped entering full weekends and opted to do half-days or only saturdays and he fucking THRIVED. i made time to meet all his needs before trials, i prioritized his happiness over technically correct courses, and i got over the embarrassment of excusing myself from a run if it was going downhill. i fixed my internal emotional environment and that fixed our disconnect and made every win more meaningful.
the thing is, i am 100% sure i would not have fixed my emotional environment if i was actively competing and practicing the same patterns. i absolutely had to take that step back to fix myself. you can't make meaningful change if youre still in the middle of it acting it out.
i lost out on trials with mav and that sucked so much in the moment. i had awful FOMO watching my friends compete and finish titles while we did little low-pressure walks at home. but ultimately i gained something so much more important, and looking back i can't bring myself to regret that at all.

(mgv) house losing stacy's pup means that he never had a chance when it came to emotionally adopting chase and thirteen. he finally caved when chase's bio dad died so by the time thirteen came along and he decided he liked her, he didn't fight it as much. house also embarrassed himself so bad once because he slipped up and referred to chase (at thirteen) as "your brother"

Merry Christmas Marie!
@offwithhxrhead As per your request for some family fun with Victor, Alice, Smiler, and your girl Madeline, here is the gang having perhaps a little trouble figuring out family game night. Hope you enjoy!
It’s Parcheesi And Those Are The Actual Rules
“Ha! A five! Finally! Which meaaaaaans – sorry, Smiler, it’s back to Start with you!”
“Huh – hey, wait!” Smiler protested, holding up a hand as Madeline went to pick up their piece. “That’s a safe space! I can’t be captured on a safe space, remember?”
“What?” Madeline looked down, frowning. “No, this is an entrance space. That’s gotta be something different.”
“It’s got a circle!” Smiler said, pointing. “That means safe!”
“Maybe, but two pawns of different colors can’t occupy a safe space anyway!”
“Which should mean you can’t bring a pawn out there.”
“Oh come on – thanks to you, I’ve only got the one out on the board right now! You’ve gotta let me have this!”
“Why did we buy this game again?” Victor groaned, letting his head thunk against the table.
“Because it’s fun, damn it,” Alice replied, grabbing the rules sheet in a well-practiced motion. “It’s just – a bit complicated, that’s all.”
“A bit complicated?” Victor protested, peeking up at her sideways. “That’s the tenth time you’ve looked at that piece of paper tonight.”
“It’s our first time playing – we’re going to need some time to memorize everything.”
“Maybe so, but it feels like there’s a lot to memorize. For example, I still don’t remember how many bonus moves you get for capturing a pawn versus how many you get for getting one into Home.”
“Twenty for capturing, ten for getting into Home,” Madeline told him, patting his back before glaring at Smiler. “Which I only know because they keep sending me back to my Start and then gleefully going twenty.”
“As if you’re not trying to do the same here,” Smiler pointed out. They poked the circle in the contested space, frowning. “I’d swear this counts as a safe space, though.”
“It can’t be, because otherwise somebody could park their ass there and never let their opponent get a pawn out. Come on, Mum, back me up there.”
“I’m looking, I’m looking – aha!” Alice held up a finger as she read through the relevant rules. “Mmm-hmmm. . .all right, as it turns out, Maddie is correct. While normally any space with a circle is a safe space, and a safe space cannot be shared by two pawns of different colors, the entrance spaces are unique in that, if someone brings their pawn out while another pawn is sitting there, they do automatically capture that pawn. And get twenty moves.”
“Ha!” Madeline plucked the bright yellow pawn from the space and handed it to Smiler. “Back to Start with you.”
“Fine, fine,” Smiler said, putting the pawn back in their starting circle. They leaned back across the table with a smirk. “But I’ve still got two pawns in Home, and you haven’t got any yet.”
“Well, maybe I can finally get one in now that you can’t keep knocking me back,” Madeline retorted, considering her options. “Okay, so if I take five with this pawn, and then the other fifteen with–”
“Ah – no,” Alice cut in. “You have to take your twenty with a single pawn. You’re thinking of when you roll doubles with all four pawns out and get to go fourteen moves – that one you can split up between your pawns.”
“Oh – right.” Madeline shook her head, glancing over at her father as she grabbed the pawn she’d just brought out and moved it twenty. “Okay, you’re right – this game’s complicated.”
“And yet people have been playing it successfully since the basic form was invented in India ages ago,” Alice said, folding her arms. “We can get through it too.”
“I know,” Victor said, finally sitting up straight again. “But maybe next week we can play Monopoly?”
“And watch you utterly crush us again with the power of capitalism you learned from your father? No thanks,” Smiler said, grabbing the dice.
“As I recall, Alice won the last game of Monopoly.”
“Only because I landed on Free Parking right when I needed cash,” Alice responded. “Every other game, you have, in fact, killed us.”
“Do you really want our family to become another Monopoly statistic, Dad?” Madeline added, giving him big eyes.
Victor laughed. “All right, all right, maybe Clue next week instead. . .”

something that really grinds my gears as I venture into other writing/bookish spaces is the fact that people have to apologize when stating their opinions/personal preferences when it comes to what they read or consume for fear of offending The Majority. Like there's this sudden hyper-defensive stance that fans or certain groups of people take about what they love and if someone else god forbid states (on their OWN account or a comment thread mind you, with others who agree with them) that they prefer not to consume those things or they don't love it as much as those people do then these people suddenly feel attacked??
Like. Imagine me obsessing over a show that I've binged a million times and then someone across the globe whispers the words "eh I don't really like that show, it feels overhyped and I don't get why people like it. I prefer this other show to that' and I DIVE ACROSS THE OCEAN to be like 'You're entitled to like that other show, but I don't get why you have to put down my show that I love so much in order to say that. Like that's just very rude of you to even verbalize that opinion in your own space of living and existing that's nowhere near my space of living and existing.'
Like??? People?? Do we not see how mad that is?? THAT'S what's happening in the book community rn and we're treating that like it's normal, I don't know. I get that people can cross a line when stating an opinion or make generalizations about people who consume certain things, but...I don't need someone else's validation to love what I love? If they don't like it or think I'm weird or whatever for liking it that's their problem (and their opinion)??? It doesn't say anything about me or change how I feel about the things I like? And if I'm around people who are bashing what I enjoy and I don't want to see that then maybe just...click away? delete their comment? click unfollow? follow more people who like what you love to drown it out? idk. People are entitled to not like what you love, that's what makes us all beautifully diverse. idk.
#inkoverted thoughts#maybe my first mistake was leaving Tumblr to look at other bookish/writing communities#and this wasn't even TikTok which I refuse to touch with a ten foot pole#but I just watched a YT video of a girl talking about things she hates in Web comics and it was obviously said with goodnatured humor#but she still apologized or had to clarify that like these are just her opinions and she's not bashing people who enjoy these things#and someone in the comments was like I hate that she had to do that bc people can't take a joke or respect others' opinions#and I didn't even clock it when I watched the video but I was like yeah you're right...#and then I go on Insta and I see an author being like#'in a time when spicy romantasy books are being obsessed over...I'm writing “clean” sci-fi slow burn romance#and most people in the comments were like 'yes thank you I appreciate you adding some variety to the bookish community'#or 'there are diverse readers who like all types of genres its only that the romance readers are the loudest and dominating social media'#which is a separate thing that I do think is a valid point#but then a reader from the genre that's being pushed as The Majority came into the chat like#'good for you for writing a sci-fi slow burn - that sounds interesting but you don't have to put down other books when you say that'#and I'm just blinking at the comment like 😃#whooooo? where did OP put down other books???#all they did was say they're going against the grain and writing something less popular amongst the online book community#please learn reading comprehension#and fifth of all - if this upsets you why did you feel the need to click on it and comment like???#go back to your spicy romantasy community and talk to them I don't???? what do you gain from being in this comment thread??#I'm getting frustrated for no reason but it's just so mad to me that people have to walk on eggshells now to share what they like and don't#ON THIER OWN ACCOUNTS#mad#absolutely MAD#there was a separate debate that came up about the fact that people using “clean” to describe non-smut stories implies smut is dirty#which I didn't even think that and I don't even think that's what people meant to imply when using that term#it's the same way you would use the word “clean” to describe something PG vs something rated R or M in my opinion#but that's a whole other thing I'm not gonna get into#if you want a reason to be mad 24/7 then how about getting offline and looking at what's going on in the world? 😀#better use of your anger I can *promise* you
