Listening to a podcast interview with the directors of Treasure Planet, and one of the most fascinating things is when they talk about how the '90s Disney animation climate was all about making these prestige animated films with stories that could have been done in live action (Hunchback, Pocahontas), and these guys fought to make films that could only be done (or at least be best done) with animation. Because it's kind of the inverse of their current philosophy of making everything live action even if it's a story that's better in animation. So anyway if the live-action Treasure Planet thing is really happening, it's like spitting in the face of this movie's intent.

finals week is coming to a close, and i'm going into overdrive for my last exam of the semester -- civil law review. studying for this class (6 pm to 9 pm!) was like preparing for war every week but i think deciding to take it was one of the best decisions ive ever made in law school and for getting ready for the bar exam.

the other thing that is, or rather could have been, very fun about AI art is the "in the style of" thing. when you type an artist's name, you get to see the defining qualities of that artist's work. you're basically putting everything they've ever done in a blender and seeing what colour it goes. typing "in the style of aubrey beardsley" gives you flowing black lines, bulbous shapes and vaguely art nouveau patterns; "klimt" generates images in gold and green, with pale-faced women and lots of intricate chequered detailing; "kusama" gives you polka dots, obviously, while "mondrian" gives you rectangles. it's neat! it's a cool feature!

...except the other day i saw a guy quizzing an artist on twitter, and it transpired he was trying to figure out what keywords he should input in order to accurately replicate her style using AI. so, lol.

Are there any magical girl video games you would recommend playing? I've heard of some that look cool but aren't accessible in the slightest.

Panel de Pon. The Japanese port is on the SNES Switch Online service. It is in Japanese but there's a fan translation that's pretty much on all the emulators. It's just a puzzle game but it's pretty easy to pick up if you're into that kind of thing

Calico. A sim game where you run a cat cafe in a land full of magical girls (and you the player are also a magical girl by extension iirc). Very comfy & cozy, do recommend

GrimGrimoire. An RTS game originally for the PS2 but recently got an updated port for PS4/5 & the Switch. More plot driven than the 1st two recommendations lol. I didn't get very far in my playthrough but it's held in pretty high regard among rts fans

Atelier Rorona: A more stereotypical JRPG. There's so many iterations of the Atelier franchise but Rorona I remember being really wow'd by it. The first game Atelier Marie recently got a remake for the Switch if you want something a little easier to find (not sure how much Rorona goes for on the 2nd hand market but it was released a few different ways iirc but I also haven't played Atelier Marie so I don't want to recommend something I haven't played)

Magical Warrior Diamond Heart: a visual novel rpg with a more modern day magical girl plot and also a dating sim with a large cast of fun characters. It's still in progress but from the demos I've played was fun and I look forward to playing more of it as more routes release.

Finished up Kaneshiro's palace and overall it's really solid in terms of gameplay and design. Love the money littered all over the place, the guard designs (liked the detail of their masks looking bug like its a nice bit of foreshadowing) and ofc the music. I think the last puzzle is fun but it drags a little at the end tbh (but that could be because I did the palace in one day so)
