there's truly no escaping really good fanfic. like, it can be an unhinged pairing or plot or crack or whatever, a show that's been long dead or a tiny fandom, but if a fanfic is that good, it worms its way into my brain and makes me want to create. anyways someone tell me what mental illness this is

What upsets me the most about the dumbass Sansa vs Arya thing (other than it only existing because antis hate Sansa that much) is that... what does it add to the story? This isn't fandom stuff, this is something antis genuinely want for the story, but what does it ADD? What is the POINT? What value does these 2 siblings fighting against each other would give to the story? To the message and theme? It's even more worthless than the boring Cleganebowl shit.
Sansa and Arya, two siblings from the main family of the series that the story centers on, fighting and hating each other is detrimental to literally EVERYTHING. ASOIAF is LOADED with family dynamics that are actually toxic and destructive to the members. We have the Targaryens, we have the Greyjoys, we have the LANNISTERS. Westeros is so bereft of families that love each other, making the ONE family that genuinely love each other and doing their best to reunite hate each other is so... just spit on GRRM and the effort he put into House Stark, why don't you?
I don't want to sound like a pretentious ass, but these people should not read a series like ASOIAF if they're gonna let their petty feelings and opinions impact the series as a whole. They can hate Sansa, but if they hate her to the point where it impacts their reading of the series, then put it down and go read something simpler. Or just stick to fanfics because their disturbing hate fantasy will never be canon, sorry antis
(about this ask)
I talked about this before and now canā€™t find the post, but Arya and Jon fans who hate Sansa are holding her responsible for the problems with society that Martin is criticizing. They are missing that society is being criticized from different angles to allow us to see all the ways itā€™s hurting people. Rather than realizing it isnā€™t the little girl who caused their pain, with them we are getting two critiques (coming from different directions) of their world. Jon is excluded, Arya is expected to conform.
Jon wants in, Arya wants out.
And of course, Sansa suffers as well. She may fulfill the ideal in a way that Arya cannot, but that doesnā€™t save her. We have Elia and Lyanna which is another picture of conformity/non-conformity ā€”both of them die. There is a much larger part of the story here that is the driving force of what these characters suffer, itā€™s a shame to dismiss all of that in order to hate on Sansa.
I have no gatekeeping instinct. Iā€™m happy to read different takes (within reason ā€” absolutely no Sansa hate which is why I donā€™t do much with anyone beyond our corner), I have read and written Martin critical stuff, I donā€™t mind people coming away with different interpretations. I enjoy that (within reason), and thatā€™s a part of who I am beyond fandom so that isnā€™t gonna change. I simply decide, ā€œwell, I certainly never want to hear from that blogger/that part of the fandom again,ā€ but as far as I know, theyā€™re an angry 13yo who will reread the series in a year or two and realize, oh, the Sansa and Arya conflict is created by external forces, and actually, they can understand the pressures Sansa struggled with as well. Iā€™m a big fan of leaving room for growth, and literature has a special way of allowing us to see things in new ways and helping us evolve as I individuals. Iā€™d never be in favor of taking it away from anyone no matter how much I think they misunderstand it. You never know what the future holds and if one day, theyā€™ll get it.
Also, I donā€™t have a perfect grasp on what Martin is doing myself. The endgame of some of the characters strikes me asā€¦.uh, less realistic, and more, whimsical, so unless Iā€™m gonna throw out my books, Iā€™m not gonna pretend to be more deserving than any one else. I will filter and block though because when it comes to Sansa haters:
Tumblr media
making the ONE family that genuinely love each other and doing their best to reunite hate each other is so... just spit on GRRM and the effort he put into House Stark, why don't you?
So, uh, not to annoy you further, anon, but I didnā€™t call what I had written ā€œwish-fulfillmentā€ for nothing. šŸ˜¬ I definitely think expecting the Starks to kill each other is absurd, but as a Jonsa, Iā€™m not sure how Arya would be able to accept that relationship, and I do wonder if itā€™s Martinā€™s way of allowing tension and conflict within the Starks even upon their reunion. Maybe I worry for nothing, but Jon is Aryaā€™s person, he made her feel love and accepted, for him to be in love with Sansaā€¦I worry that Arya would feel displaced, and how quickly Martin would find a resolution there.
Many others have previously looked at how Martin seems to have no problem writing brothers / guys having healthy relationships, but likes to have sisters at odds. Thereā€™s a dearth of healthy female relationships, so itā€™s an opportunity for him to break that pattern, and if Arya was accepting of it I suppose it could be a contrast to the Cat/LF/Lysa mess. That may be the goal heā€™s working towards, and to your point, that adds to the story in sadly lacking area. All the same, while I do think the Starks love and will be loyal to each other, Iā€™m not sure how warm and cozy things will be on the page? I have some concerns about what heā€™s making room for. But that is the benefit of being in a fandom with so many emotionally mature fic writers who value and prioritize female relationships. I get to read healthy relationships either way!

I read your metas on why you think GRRM always meant for Bran to be KITN, not King of the 7K as per what he told Benioff and Weiss during their decades-long intimate working relationship on the show adaptation and I have to say I disagree lol. I don't really understand how someone can think that Benioff and Weiss were told 'yeah Jon sits the throne and the irrelevant 8 year old fourth son of the Stark family becomes KITN' and D and D were like, 'ummm no we're going to blow our legacy by putting BRAN of all characters on the IT, and not giving our fan favorite character his shining moment on the IT.' I don't like Bran as King and neither did D and D, but they had to maintain that GOT was some semblance of an adaptation so they had to use Martin's endgames. It blows my mind that people still deny this. I do think the north being independent and Sansa being QITN was fanservice tho. She will likely be Lady of Winterfell, not queen. Anyone that thinks she ends her story in the Vale is deeply unserious.
Jon's a chosen one deconstruction because once he finds out about his parentage, it's not going to be a good thing that gives him a renewed sense of self like in the thousands of other chosen one fantasy arcs. It will be a devastating revelation for him and cause a very negative identity crisis. Also, his parentage was always meant to be a red herring, why do you think GRRM set it up in a way that there is literally no way for Jon to prove he's actually R and L's son? Much less prove he's a legitimate son born from a valid, legal marriage? I don't think anyone outside of Jon's very close inner circle will ever know the truth about who his real parents are, it's not something he will want to ever be made known lmao. The show conflating Jon with YG, not adapting YG, and basically being a Jon Snow is So Great Fanservice vehicle in the last few seasons has made the fandom think that's where his arc is leading, it's not. Not that GRRM will ever publish another book, but anyway.
Also, Jon is not AA, it is Dany. The thing is.....that's not a good thing lol. The AA prophecy is basically prophesizing the coming of Khal Stalin, not a savior lmao. That's the twist and the double edge sword with prophecies that is so very Martin. The constant debates among the fandom as to who is AA is so hilarious because they fundamentally don't understand that it's a negative prophecy. The dramatic irony of house targ thinking they need to bring about the AA prophecy to save humanity when in actuality they are unleashing a new evil that needs to be defeated is deeply delicious dramatic irony. But the fandom is too bogged down into the most basic fantasy tropes to see it and refuses to acknowledge that GRRM is cynically deconstructing these tropes. Almost as if he's trying to say that being the son of the crown prince actually sucks and will make the supposed 'chosen one's' life hell, the ethereal looking princess with the sympathetic backstory is actually an authoritarian tyrant who's bloody conquest for the iron throne using her hordes of brainwashed killing machines will cause destruction not restore some great dynasty, and the 'broken' disabled boy with special mind powers who is able to look into all of history to learn from the mistakes of all the monarchs that came before him is the 'best' ruler for a 'broken' realm.
I'm uuuuh, gonna try and reply to this as briefly as I can but like with the premise that everyone can agree or disagree with anything and text interpretation can't be set in stone until like the entire thing is over... in order
I don't really understand how someone can think that Benioff and Weiss were told 'yeah Jon sits the throne and the irrelevant 8 year old fourth son of the Stark family becomes KITN' and D and D were like, 'ummm no we're going to blow our legacy by putting BRAN of all characters on the IT, and not giving our fan favorite character his shining moment on the IT.'
anon I don't wanna sound rude but.... they lit set jon up to kill the night king and then made arya of all ppl do it NONSENSICALLY just to make ppl surprised, they literally shat all over the entire text since S2 if not S1 already, just the robb storyline shows they didn't understand anything about the point of the red wedding which they said they WANTED to adapt and they basically made shit up since s4 onwards without anything making literal sense including making c*rsei the ultimate boss when there is no shred of text evidence she's that important and grrm is pissed with the ending so like... I can 100% think that both of them didn't gaf about what grrm had to say and just understood what they wanted to, also because we're talking abt the ppl who made stannis go agamemnon on shireen because they hated his ass when if shireen dies like that no way it's stannis ordering it by any shred of textual sense so I absolutely will say dnd didn't gaf about what grrm said and threw their legacy in the trash, that because.... everyone thought the finale was trash and they haven't had a gig like that since bc no one wants them after got, with good reason, so like ppl can say that because there is nothing dnd have done as showrunners that shows they gaf about the og text, end of story
I don't like Bran as King and neither did D and D, but they had to maintain that GOT was some semblance of an adaptation so they had to use Martin's endgames. It blows my mind that people still deny this. I do think the north being independent and Sansa being QITN was fanservice tho. She will likely be Lady of Winterfell, not queen. Anyone that thinks she ends her story in the Vale is deeply unserious.
except the jc endgame is obviously not the book endgame, lit no one's endgame except imvho jon's (hahaha) and possibly tyrion/davos is the actual book endgame and I'd like everyone to remember there's no shred of textual evidence rickon doesn't die in the books but anyway like... sorry but dnd not wanting to put jon on the IT for shock value (which is obvious since everyone expected it) and not giving bran kitn to give it to sansa so ppl who wanted her to be queen would be happy makes absolute sense to me, also like... again I'm not gonna go over it again bc you said you read the meta but: bran is a deconstructed version of a kingly arthurian archetype which by himself means that he has to become king while being disabled/in virtue of having lost his legs so like sorry but bran being king is absolutely in the text but no way it makes sense it's 7k since he's directly tied to his land and its magic same as the fisher king so......
Jon's a chosen one deconstruction because once he finds out about his parentage, it's not going to be a good thing that gives him a renewed sense of self like in the thousands of other chosen one fantasy arcs. It will be a devastating revelation for him and cause a very negative identity crisis
I agree and I wrote a longass meta about jon being a chosen one deconstruction but being AA/his inheritance absolutely does not rule out it being a deconstruction imvho
Also, his parentage was always meant to be a red herring, why do you think GRRM set it up in a way that there is literally no way for Jon to prove he's actually R and L's son?
howland reed was there when he was born and lyanna could have told him and ned they were married, also bran can lit travel in time and prove it/see it happen, but even if he's not legitimate wrt rhaegar it doesn't matter because in the book he's legitimate wrt robb's will so he's gonna get kitn title at some point even just for that but like... point is if howland reed corroborates it and he gets a pet dragon or smth and no one has reasons to disagree esp because they'll need to kill zombies whether r/l were married doesn't matter at all
Much less prove he's a legitimate son born from a valid, legal marriage? I don't think anyone outside of Jon's very close inner circle will ever know the truth about who his real parents are, it's not something he will want to ever be made known lmao. The show conflating Jon with YG, not adapting YG, and basically being a Jon Snow is So Great Fanservice vehicle in the last few seasons has made the fandom think that's where his arc is leading, it's not. Not that GRRM will ever publish another book, but anyway.
we can't know about wrt grrm publishing something else or not but again: howland reed knows and he's still around and kicking and there is no reason for people to not make it known especially when it comes out and they have to treat with dany, also the show conflated young griff with both jon and cersei and jon connington with jorah and daenerys which makes no sense whatsoever so like that argument holds zero water bc they didn't know what they were doing and it shows
Also, Jon is not AA, it is Dany. The thing is.....that's not a good thing lol. The AA prophecy is basically prophesizing the coming of Khal Stalin, not a savior lmao. That's the twist and the double edge sword with prophecies that is so very Martin.
anon the second maester aemon said on page AA is daenerys out loud it went out of the window, the way asoiaf prophecies are structured everyone who's rumored to be X by other people/themselves before it actually happens won't be that, and jon only ever was deemed a candidate by a vision melisandre had... which she immediately discarded bc she didn't understand what the hell her own god was telling her so sorry but I don't agree and it's not gonna happen
Almost as if he's trying to say that being the son of the crown prince actually sucks and will make the supposed 'chosen one's' life hell, the ethereal looking princess with the sympathetic backstory is actually an authoritarian tyrant who's bloody conquest for the iron throne using her hordes of brainwashed killing machines will cause destruction not restore some great dynasty, and the 'broken' disabled boy with special mind powers who is able to look into all of history to learn from the mistakes of all the monarchs that came before him is the 'best' ruler for a 'broken' realm.
anon I don't even disagree with all of this but:
i do not think that in any way shape or form jon is not AA - there is no way he's not, he's lit the only one who actually came back to life in the show if we wanna show truth and there's no other character who lit resurrected and no one else will so there's that, he died according to the prophecy and no one in text would ever put a cent on AA being him, like.,........ what we know is not what they do and for westeros jon snow is the least likely candidate soooo like sorry but I don't think it makes sense that anyone else is AA, you can think it's dany but idt there's a chance in hell
I think the evil is already there and it's zombies, like... ik the show made it look like the long night was nothing but it's the actual ultimate big bad so there's no need for AA to be another evil, rhaegar would have misunderstood the og prophecy well enough as it is without getting that far
jon being the chosen one and AA would still make his life hell
idt dany is written in the book as an authoritarian tyrant and idt it's where she's headed and I'm saying it as someone who doesn't gaf about dany and doesn't care either way but the show version was just ridiculous and nothing in the text says she's headed there whatsoever
I also agree this fandom cannibalizing itself over who is AA is ridiculous... because it's jon and there's no reason to further argue over that ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ
bran can absolutely be the best ruler for a broken realm,..... the north, which has been mauled and will be further mauled by the zombies, and it makes no sense he is 7k anyway given his background and stuff, again you can disagree with it as you want but idt anything that happened in the show except an extremely selected amount of things which are absolutely out of context has a chance in hell of happening in the books and from the way grrm reacted to the finale it seems obvious to me, then... again you can agree or disagree with me but I wrote so much meta on the topic I honestly feel like I'd be rehashing myself over and over if I went about it again but like
of course everyone believes in their own interpretation but there's no way I'm gonna be swayed by any argument agains kitn!bran and 7k!jon who then abdicates and goes to the wildlings by anything that's not grrm publishing ados and writing differently, godspeed and that's mvho ;)

one of the most annoying aspects of the fandom to me as a Jaime fan, that regularily comes up in discussion about whether Jaime deserves happy ending is how a lot of people just effortlessly posit that 'duh, ofc Jaime doesnt deserve the happy ending he literally tried to kill 2 kids in book 1 (of 7) it would be OFFENSIVE and PROBLEMATIC !!' (boy do I love those words).
when Here's the kicker: why should (to us as readers) Jaime pushing Bran or trying to hurt Arya matter MORE than him risking his life to save Brienne and subsequently Sansa? How do the these bad deeds make Jaime more worthy of eternal condemnation by the narrative than the other good deeds make him worthy of salvation? People are straight up ignoring the good, only focusing on bad and somehow think that makes them the smarter mature fans who properly understand complexity and gray morality, when no they dont. They just think that if they dont spend every second reminding others that this character is very very very bad person they somehow relativise the bad character did and that being the good person means constantly being wary about the worst in people and that forgivness is naĆÆve thing for ignorant delulu cringe fangirs/boys.
When this is something grrm himself disagrees in his interviews.
PSA:
You have no way of proving whether crimes somehow release more negative energy in the ether than the heroic acts release the positive energy
You have no reliable way of quantifying how does the bad in Jaime's prose wheigh down against the good so you're just arbitrarily giving focus to the bad because they emotionaly affect you more.
You're not smarter for condemning than the others are for forgiving when its literally the point of Jaime the character that he is someone who has done and is capable of both good and bad.
I mean these are kinda philosophical questions that dont have a single universal answer and they're not supposed to, its simply that your mileage may wary
In my estimation : whether his ending should see Jaime happy or destroyed (and lets not talk about how the question of Jaime's ending is treated as binary - either he is forgiven by everyone, marries Brienne and becomes the Vice President of the New Republic of Westeros or he gets impaled by the starks and turned into scarecrow at the Winterfall square; there is no middle ground nothing in between; when 'happy' ending for Jaime could simply mean finding inner peace) depend entirely on how Jaime behaves in the rest of the story, whether he makes active choice everyday to do better and nothing else.
aSoIaF isnt gonna be less of a 'mature' grounded study of human emotions, morals, ethics if Jaime eventualy stops suffering karmic retributions by the narrative (that he definitely does in book 3 and will do in book 6 and arguably goes through in book 4-5, if only more subtle). And if you disagree with that its time to admite your not a 'reserved' cool 'objective' critic and maybe you are just a hater.

Just saw a jonsas saying that Jonrya would never work out because a relationship between Jon and a Stark would be about both politics and romance, and because "Sansa has the most political weight in the north and is the oldest Stark sister, it just makes more sense". They also claimed that the only reason it "worked' in the original outline was because of Sansa's death.
So basically despite Jon and Arya being extremely close, constantly thinking about each other, Jon seeing Arya in his love interests and dying to save Arya (who is the one the northern plot is centered on and not disinherited Sansa), etc. Jonsa just makes more sense šŸ˜‘
Uhhh... boy do they make me laugh with this stuff. In the original outline Sansa's death is in no way connected to the story between Jon and Arya, or even Dany. It's completely separate and it's just an outline so idk how they can claim that lol? And she has zero political weight in the North. The Northmen don't care about her due to her marriage to a Lannister, Robb disinherited her, and Jon cares even less beyond using her name as a get-out-of-jail-free card. Idk how many times we have to point out that Arya's the only girl with political weight in the North.
"Even ruined and broken, Winterfell remains Lady Arya's home. What better place to wed her, bed her, and stake your claim? [...] He [Stannis] is too cautious to come to Barrowton ā€¦ but he must come to Winterfell. His clansmen will not abandon the daughter of their precious Ned to such as you. Stannis must march or lose them... - ADWD, Reek III
"[...] What do you think passes through their heads when they hear the new bride weeping? Valiant Ned's precious little girl." - ADWD, The Turncloak
"Winter is almost upon us, boy. And winter is death. I would sooner my men die fighting for the Ned's little girl than alone and hungry in the snow, weeping tears that freeze upon their cheeks. - ADWD, The King's Prize
"Aye, we will," came a cackle from the high table, where Arnolf Karstark sat with his son Arthor and three grandsons. [...] "We'll take it for the Ned and for his daughter. Aye, and for the Young Wolf too, him who was so cruelly slaughtered. [...] March, I said, and before the moon can turn, we'll all be bathing in the blood of Freys and Boltons." - ADWD, The Sacrifice
You know nothing, Jon Snow. He thought of Arya, her hair as tangled as a bird's nest. I made him a warm cloak from the skins of the six whores who came with him to Winterfell ā€¦ I want my bride back ā€¦ I want my bride back ā€¦ I want my bride back ā€¦ "I think we had best change the plan," Jon Snow said. - ADWD, Jon XIII
I'm not even gonna go into all the romantic aspects because we'll be here all day, but it's just as you said. If their requirements are really that a marriage be romantic, then yes Jon would choose the girl he actually has a connection with, the one he thinks of constantly, the one he calls his heart. And if it has to be political according to them too, then Arya has that in spades. After all, it was foreshadowed in her very first chapter:
Jon shrugged. "Girls get the arms but not the swords. Bastards get the swords but not the arms. I did not make the rules, little sister." - AGOT, Arya I

Ā Goinā€™ To The Chapel And Weā€™re Gonna Get Married...
Happy Friday!
So.......... Arranged Marriage fics are my all-time favorite trope LMAO. I just never get tired of two strangers who gotta get married for politics or whatever and then they just gotta figure out how to live together, learn each otherā€™s language, overcome cultural differences.... ITā€™S SO GOOD EVERY TIME. Here are a few of my favorite Arranged Marriage fics in no particular order:
Title: Just as You Are Mine
Author:Ā prosciutto / @prosciuttoeā€‹
Ship:Ā Bellamy Blake/Clarke Griffin (The 100)
Rating: Mature
Words: 23,637
Summary:Ā Bellamyā€™s already there by the time she makes her way to the centre of the room. She didnā€™t get a good look at him before, so Clarke takes the time to look at him now.Ā
Heā€™s not all that much taller than she is, but the breadth of his shoulders feels worrying, somewhat. His skin is marked with a array of calluses and scars, white against his tanned skin, and the deft, sure movements he makes confirms that heā€™s every inch the warrior heā€™s promised to be.
Swallowing, she steps forward, meeting his gaze. His face remains carefully blank, same as before, when Kane had told her that theyā€™d be married.Ā
In hindsight, marrying a total stranger may not have been one of Clarke's brightest ideas.
(Or: Arranged Marriage AU. Clarke seals an alliance with the Broadleaf clan by marrying Bellamy Blake.)
emmatheficreccer: I LOVE Grounder Bellamy AUs and this is one of the best ones out there!! Bellamy is very soft; we love to see it.Ā
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Title: To Know His Heart
Author:Ā hkafterdarkĀ
Ship:Ā Jamie Benn/Tyler Seguin (Hockey RPF)
Rating: Explicit
Words: 26,208
Summary:Ā With his reputation in tatters, Tyler will do anything to save his family's name - including marrying a man he hardly knows.
emmatheficreccer: OK SO I know nothing about hockey; i have no idea who these two dudes are. BUT this is one of the best Arranged Marriage/Marriage of Convenience, Regency era fics out there!!! Iā€™ve read it so many times... the way their relationship evolves... *chefā€™s kiss*
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Title: The Feasts of the Seven
Author:Ā Gefionne / @gefionneā€‹
Ship:Ā Sandor Clegane/Sansa Stark (Game of Thrones)
Rating: Mature
Words: 26,388
Summary:Ā Sansa and Sandor share the Seven Feasts - A tourney for the Feast of the Warrior ends with Sandor as champion and, by the will of the king, Sansa as his prize. Over the next year, they get to know each other as they find their way in their new home at Clegane Keep.
emmatheficreccer: I love AUs where Sander is able to whisk Sansa away from Kingā€™s Landing. In this fic, Sansa and Sandor are forced to marry, but end up building a beautiful life together and it is lovely!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Title: Another Word for Forever
Author:Ā stardropdream
Ship:Ā Keith/Shiro (Voltron)
Rating: Explicit
Words: 61,028
Summary:Ā Shiro knows better than to expect love in an arranged marriage. This is all for the sake of universal peace, after all, and solidifying a Terran-Galran alliance. At the very least, Shiro can hope to make a friend out of this.
Becoming friends would be much easier, though, if he and his husband could actually communicate. With a language barrier and a mountain of cultural differences between them, getting to know Keith proves to be a challenge.
Luckily, Shiro's always worked well with challenges.
emmatheficreccer: OK SO THIS FIC is one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITES. A great part of Arranged Marriage AUs is two strangers overcoming cultural differences and learning to communicate. In this fic they even have a language barrier to add to the miscommunication and i just love how they eventually learn to understand each other and fall in love!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Title: Not Part of the Plan
Author:Ā Annie D (scaramouche) / @no-gormsā€‹
Ship:Ā Castiel/Dean Winchester (Supernatural)
Rating: Explicit
Words:Ā 337,851
Summary:Ā Castiel's spent most of his adult life keeping his head down and staying out of trouble. This is a deliberate choice on his part, because as a cousin of the King, he'd rather stay unimportant and forgotten. This changes abruptly when King Michael decides that he has a better use for Castiel: he is to be wed to a noble member of the neighboring Republic, as part of an agreement between their two nations.
Castiel knows he has to obey, but that doesn't mean he won't rebel in what small ways he can. Unexpectedly, his actions end up having far-reaching consequences.
emmatheficreccer: So this may be my favorite fanfic series of all time. Seriously! This series has everything!! it evolves from a one night stand to an arranged marriage to an epic adventure with politics, battles and romance! The first time i read this fic series i just immediately wanted to read it again. Itā€™s THAT good. You donā€™t even need to know Supernatural! The first time I read this fic, i had never seen a single episode.Ā
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If there is an Arranged Marriage Fic that you love, send it my way! Iā€™d love to check it out. Also be sure to leave a Kudos and/or Comment for these lovely authors if you check out and love these fics! If you think i should do a part 2 for Arranged Marriage Fics, let me know!!
Love always,
Emma

Title: Flatlanders
Summary: After being forced to retire from singing, Sansa returns to Winterfell Ranch, a place she hasnā€™t called home in over ten years, and finds the man that she left behind all those years ago.
Part 1 .... Part 2
1991
Kingā€™s Landing, TX
Sansaā€™s hair was a frizzy mess. It wasnā€™t usually so humid this far inland, but of course the moment she came back was the same week that the summer storms started. It only ever rained once a year when she lived in LA.
And now she was trekking around town when the sky looked like it was about to open up. She needed to fix a broken fence thatā€™s been neglected for weeks. And she needed to talk to the bank and get their finances sorted. What the hell has Arya been doing all this time?
Fence first. Bank later. And maybe sheā€™ll get so busy getting wood that she might not even have to see Petyr.
And of course it started pouring as soon as she pulled up to the Night's Watch General Store. Damn. It better not be a flash flood. She should have listened when Mama told her to bring a damn umbrella. Bless Sansaā€™s heart.
Accepting her fate, she steeled herself and made a dash from the truck to the front door. Even the thirty seconds it took her to get inside was enough to make her look like a drowned rat. Forget frizzy hair, her auburn hair was soaked and limp.
She was greeted by a familiar face, but she couldnā€™t place his name, not having seen him in over a decade. He was scrawny and of average height with short cropped hair.
ā€œSansa! Woah, never thought Iā€™d see you again in these neck of the woods.ā€
Honestly, neither did she.
She looked at his name badge. Ah. Pyp. One of Jonā€™s lackeys who used to follow him around high school. She thought it was adorable back then. She wondered if he still talked to Jon.
ā€œJonā€™s gonna be so happy to see you.ā€ She doubted it, but she nodded and smiled. ā€œHow can I help ya today?ā€
ā€œGot a whole section of my fence broken. I think from lightning a couple of weeks ago.ā€
Pyp showed her a couple of different options. She wanted to buy the cedar since it would last longer through the unpredictable Texas weather, but she saw their finances, and Mama definitely understated just how much trouble the ranch was in. She didnā€™t know how long her own cash was going to last with her singing voice now gone.
So she went with the pine instead. Sheā€™ll deal with it later.
ā€œIā€™ll give you the friends and family discount,ā€ Pyp said when he rung her up. As she was signing the check, he pulled out another piece of paper and asked, ā€œDo you mind also signing this? My niece loves your music. Sheā€™s always jamming to your album on her little boombox.ā€
Sansa hadn't thought she was that popular. She had one or two songs played on the radio nationally, and produced a couple of songs for commercials. She bet it was her local celebrity fame that made her popular down here.
She gave her signature and hauled ass out of her store with her fence posts while the rain momentarily stopped. She covered her new purchase with a tarp and settled back into her truck.
She checked the time, and damn the bank was still open.
So she made her way over to the Eyrie Bank. Her parents had only ever gone to one bank their entire life because it was owned by a family friend. Papa had been good friends with Jon Arryn for a long time before he passed, and then Aunt Lysa remarried a childhood friend, Petyr Baelish.
To Sansa, Petyr had always been the creepy uncle, but if anyone could help her sort out the mess with the ranch, he could.
There werenā€™t many customers when she entered the bank, so of course they let Petyr know right away that she was there to see him.
He smiled that creepy smile that he always had, as if he wanted to devour her. It was the same look music producers always gave her when she entered the room. They always undressed her with their eyes first before they bothered listening to her demos.
And she smiled back, as he leaned forward and held her in a too intimate hug. Gross. ā€œSansa, my dear. Itā€™s so good to see you. Iā€™ve missed you so much over these last twelve years.ā€
ā€œSame here, Uncle Baelish.ā€
ā€œI wish you had come to visit more often.ā€
ā€œWell you know what itā€™s like for artists trying to break in.ā€
ā€œI canā€™t imagine what itā€™s like to give up everything to chase your dreams. Youā€™re so brave.ā€ Liar. Everybody knew that Sansa was forced to leave.
Sansa smiled more. ā€œThank you Uncle.ā€
Baelish led them to his private office, and the way that he patted her shoulder after he closed the door made her uncomfortable, but she held it in as she watched him take a seat.
ā€œSo how can I help you, my sweetling?ā€
ā€œI need you to walk me through the Winterfell finances.ā€
ā€œCertainly, Iā€™ll make it as easy as I can for you to follow.ā€
Sansa started tapping her finger against the arm rest.
She resented his insinuation. She didnā€™t finish high school, but she learned to manage her finances, learned how much the Lannisters stole from her, knew how much she willfully turned away from because she needed the Lannisters as much as she hated them.
Still he did make it easy for her to understand, all the while outlining all of the paperwork.
Mama had been behind on bank payments for a long time, even after being given extensions consistently. Eventually, even Petyrā€™s generosity, so he says, couldnā€™t save the ranch. So Robb took out a private loan to cover the bank payments.
ā€œAnother bank?ā€ she asked.
ā€œNo more personal than that. I believe Robb was good friends with Rhaegarā€™s boy.ā€ He probably wanted to say bastard, but knew better since he was Robbā€™s best friend.
But she couldn't believe that Robb would be stupid enough to take out a loan from the Valyrian Dragons. Maybe he had a death wish after all.
ā€œAnd thatā€™s whatā€™s keeping the ranch afloat now? Do you know how much we owe?ā€
Petyr gave a number and it wasnā€™t absurd, but, ā€œThis interest rate is insane. We wonā€™t ever be able to touch the principle.ā€
Petyr shrugged. ā€œI did try to warn your dear brother. I told him that it would be better for the bank to repossess the ranch. We would have certainly allowed your family to manage it still.ā€ But he would own it all. ā€œBut alas your brother couldnā€™t see sense.ā€
She couldnā€™t tell if Robb was a prideful fool, or smart not to fall into bed with Petyr.
She thanked Petyr for his time and headed to the Dragonā€™s clubhouse. She had dreaded this part of coming home. Sansa hadnā€™t seen Jon in twelve years, and she didnā€™t know what kind of man he grew up to be. He had always been kind and sweet as a child, but kind and sweet men donā€™t join the Valyrian Dragons.
But she had to know if Robb had a plan all along, or if he was dumb enough to leave his family and the ranch at the mercy of the Dragons.
The clubhouse didnā€™t know if it wanted to be an auto shop or a bar or a boarding house, just the kind of trashy place that you would find in the south, because what else could it be?
She never thought sheā€™d actually step in this place.
When she was still in school, the girls used to whisper about how they dreamed they would lose their virginities to one of the Dragonsā€™ members. Egg would be ideal, with his pretty boy charm and silver hair, but Jon would do ā€” he may have been shy back then, but the girls all took it as mysterious and dangerous. She wondered if the girlsā€™ assumptions became true in his adulthood.
She assumed Egg must have been successful in popping a lot of cherries, but in her loneliness she sometimes liked to think that she was the only one for Jon, that she was somehow special, despite the mess she left.
There were a couple of pretty girlies loitering in the bar area of the clubhouse when she entered. They teetered around on high heels and tight skirts and tops, and suddenly Sansa wished she had the foresight to dress for battle. Instead she was wearing her stupid ripped jeans, work boots, and a white tee with a flannel shirt.
The girlies turned to look at her and their excited chatter died down. Sheā€™s guessing the red hair gave her away, or she really was more popular than she thought.
Out of the crowd of girlies, a silver haired woman emerged in black stilettos, leather pants and a black corset top. Shit, who could wear leather pants in this weather except for Daenerys Stormborn?
ā€œSo itā€™s true, the prodigal Stark daughter returns,ā€ Dany said sweetly, but Sansa knew there was nothing sweet about the woman. She was all fire and ash. Dany probably thrived on the club wars.
Sansa shrugged. ā€œEveryoneā€™s gotta come home sometime.ā€
ā€œOnly when theyā€™re incapable of surviving the world out there.ā€
ā€œBut at least I went out into the world.ā€ Instead of being trapped in this hellhole.
ā€œOnly goes to show that you donā€™t belong here.ā€
ā€œWinterfell is my home.ā€ Even Sansa would have rolled her eyes at herself if she heard her speak.
ā€œBut the clubhouse isnā€™t. What do you want?ā€
ā€œI need to speak to Jon.ā€
ā€œNo. You left him a mess all those years ago, and you think you can come waltzing in here years later and just talk to him? Wake up honey. He wonā€™t want to talk to you.ā€ Dany crossed her arms. ā€œWhatever you want to say to Jon, you can tell to his girl.ā€
Dany had always wanted to claw her way into the Targaryens, maybe she finally did.
ā€œItā€™s got nothing to do with you Dany.ā€
Dany waved her hand, flashing an engagement ring. ā€œSee this here? Says itā€™s got everything to do with me, missy.ā€
Sansaā€™s heart started pounding uncomfortably in her chest and she felt nauseous and lightheaded. Shit. Of all the damn times to have an anxiety attack.
She stumbled backwards into something solid.
ā€œSansa.ā€
The low, broken sound snapped her towards the man.
ā€œJon,ā€ Sansa said, equally as broken.

Okay, so I'm going to rant a bit about how NBC has covered gymnastics this Olympics. For at least the last 3 summer games (because these are the games I remember), they would at least cover the host country? Of course they had to show China in Beijing, considering they won gold, but I remember seeing the GB and Brazilian teams during their respective Olympics. And this games...almost nothing about Japan. I think I saw 2 events of the Japanese men's team, and they won silver!! You would think we should have seen more of them and their accomplishments/skill??
If not show the host team, maybe even show the bronze medalists? It would have been nice to even see the GB ladies' bronze routine, too, but nooo. What they kept on showing in-between the US and ROC events was a close up of Simone's expression or a slow-mo replay of Simone's vault. They even at one point played an actual montage of Simone's mistakes during the qualifications and the competition at St. Louis! Listen, the people in the US already knew what happened - either from social media, the news, or from watching the live stream. We only needed to see that vault once and move on.
And before someone cuts in with, "There was no time - the swimming events right after were live," I'm saying there would have been time to cover...y'know...actual gymnastics, if the network had decided not to shamelessly stick a camera in Simone's face in the hopes she would have a public breakdown or something.

It looks really fun and silly, so I'm gonna liveblog my experience. Block the tag if you don't want to see my takes lol.

Fake dating AU
Robert Baratheon is retiring from politics and the Lannisters throw a little retirement party. Out of courtesy and politeness, Eddard Stark forces his family to go. After a while, Joffrey starts poking fun at Sansa until Margaery sweeps in to save the night by pretending to date Sansa.
ā€œSo Iā€™m standing there barefoot, my lasagne only mid-eaten, the car has caught on fire and my boyfriend is coming out of the portable toilet with a roll of toilette paper rolled up his torso-ā€œ
Sansa walked past Arya as fast as she could. She didnā€™t want to listen again to that unrefined story of hers. The first time she had to sit through that story had scarred her enough for life. She did not want to hear it ever again.
Sansa made her way over to the table where the drinks were being served. She hated the party. The only reason she was there is because her father had forced all Starks to go. ā€˜Itā€™s important that we all attend. To show our gratitude to Robert for his services.ā€™ Sansa could still hear Robbā€™s snort and Arya mumbling disgruntledly upon their fatherā€™s words.
This year Robert Baratheon retired from politics after nearly 40 years in the office. Everyone at the Stark household except for Ned had cheered upon the news, but their bliss had quickly faded away as soon as they learnt whose name was among the candidates running for the open position. The list was pretty dreadful as it were ā€“with names like Baelish, Stannis and Euron Greyjoyā€“ but when you added Joffrey to the bunch, it only made it that much worse. And because Eddard Stark had a place on the council, he had been invited to Robertā€™s retirement party, which the Lannisters pretty much singlehandedly organised, aided with the Tyrellsā€™ money.
Sansa poured herself a double whiskey and downed it all in one go. The drink burnt her throat but in a pleasant way. She sighed contently whilst filling her glass up again.
ā€œThought Iā€™d find you by the alcohol stand.ā€ A voice called out from behind her. Sansa pursed her lips together and clutched her glass tightly in her hand. ā€œYou picked up that trait from your father, surely.ā€ Cersei Lannister chuckled dryly as she stood alongside Sansa. She didnā€™t cast her even once glance before she grabbed the closest bottle of wine and emptied it all on her glass.
ā€œNice party.ā€ The redhead forced a smile on her face but she knew Cersei could see right through her. Not that she particularly cared, but she still had to put on a faƧade for her fatherā€™s sake.
ā€œOh, is it? Youā€™ve barely been here for 10 minutes, most of which youā€™ve spent drinking my alcohol.ā€ Cersei had drank half glass by the time she turned to face Sansa. Once she did, she looked at Sansa up and down, as if searching for something in particular.
ā€œYou can scarcely call it ā€˜your alcoholā€™ when itā€™s meant for the guests, canā€™t you?ā€ Sansa flashed the blonde woman her brightest smile, albeit it was a fake one. Both women knew. Still, they both had to keep up the appearances.
ā€œHmm, I see that, unlike your dress, your boldness has grown larger.ā€ The redhead was wearing a navy blue cocktail dress, with a golden strip on both shoulders. Sheā€™d found the exact dress that combined perfectly sophistication with a hint of sexiness. It was cut right above her knees, which meant it was short enough to be considered seducing, but still long enough to be an appropriate option to wear among her fatherā€™s colleagues. She completed the look with a pair of black heels.
ā€œWhat can I say?ā€ Sansa titled her head to the side casually. Her tone was polite and even borderline playful. ā€œTime does wonders to a person, wouldnā€™t you say?ā€
ā€œIndeed, it does.ā€ Cersei tried to suppress the growl out of her voice, but she didnā€™t hide it quite as well as she would have wanted. ā€œSoā€ the woman scanned the room lazily when a thought popped into her head ā€œis that uncivilised sister of yours around?ā€ Cersei smirked, thinking sheā€™d hit the nail on the head to get a rise out of the girl, but instead Sansaā€™s eyes lit up. She titled her head towards where Arya was standing.
ā€œHmmā€ she hummed ā€œI believe sheā€™s telling an uncivilised story to your kids.ā€
Cerseiā€™s head couldnā€™t have spun faster. She looked across the room until her eyes landed on Arya. She was with Tommen and Myrcella and it seemed both kids were extremely enjoying themselves. Cersei didnā€™t like that one bit. Not only were her children getting along with a Stark, but by the hand gestures Arya was making Cersei knew that story was not for kids.
Before Sansa had the chance to add some witty remark, Cersei sprinted across the room to snatch Tommen and Myrcella away from Arya. The brunette blinked at the abruptness at which Cersei had taken the kids away, but she didnā€™t give it much thought and made her way to the alcohol stand instead.
Sansa grinned once Arya was by her side. ā€œI take it Cersei didnā€™t like your story?ā€
Arya shrugged nonchalantly. ā€œI donā€™t see why not. That story had everything: action, drama, suspense...ā€
The redhead chuckled and shook her head ā€œIā€™m sure once you think it through youā€™ll know why she didnā€™t find it so amusing.ā€
ā€œWhat about you?ā€ Arya redirected the conversation as she grabbed another beer. Sansa was not entirely certain, but she couldā€™ve sworn that was Aryaā€™s fourth. ā€œAnything I missed?ā€
ā€œNot really. I only made small chat with Cersei.ā€
ā€œNothing with Cersei is ever ā€˜small chatā€™.ā€ Arya puffed. ā€œHow much longer must we stay here?ā€
ā€œI donā€™t know.ā€ Sansa scratched her chin. ā€œI believe Father wants us to stay at least long enough to hear Robertā€™s speech.ā€
Arya growled audibly at that. ā€œWell, thatā€™s gonna take forever then.ā€ Sansa agreed.
Both sisters turned their back to the stand and looked at the attendants. There was Robb chatting amicably with Theon Greyjoy, who hadnā€™t been previously invited but Robb had essentially begged their Father to let the boy come and so after much pleading heā€™d reluctantly agreed. If only for Robbā€™s sake. His son had said Theon would be the only thing that would keep him sane for the night. Sansa believed Greyjoy would have the contrary effect on her brother, but she didnā€™t say anything. At least he had a friend to keep him company.
Then there was Jon, standing awkwardly in a corner. He was talking with some other boy Sansa did not know but he seemed comfortable enough around him so she was happy for him. And because of their young age, Bran and Rickon had been left at home with Hodor, their sitter.
Lastly, the remaining Starks, Ned and Catelyn, were stood next to Robert Baratheon himself. The man laughed loudly at something her Father had said and Sansa was glad that, despite being surrounded by Lannisters, Ned had found somewhat of a friend.
There were more people than Sansa would have expected, still she only knew a handful of them, half of whom were her own family. As for the rest, Sansa either straight up didnā€™t like them or didnā€™t deem none of them interesting enough to strike a conversation with.
ā€œIā€™m gonna go pee.ā€ Arya said, ever so ladylike. ā€œIf I havenā€™t come back in 5 minutes, donā€™t come looking for me. Presume me dead.ā€
ā€œUgh, please do come back instead of sneaking off with Gendy again!ā€ Sansa called out after Arya as the brunette walked away. She didnā€™t know if her sister had heard her or not. She supposed she had.
Sansa sighed and finished her drink. She turned to the table and started to pour herself another one, already planning on joining Robb and Theon when someone came up beside her. Sansa prayed to the Old Gods that it wasnā€™t Cersei again.
ā€œThatā€™s a bold choice for a dress.ā€ It was not Cersei who spoke, but at that moment Sansa wished it had been. ā€œThatā€™s too slutty even for you.ā€
Sansa turned around slowly, whilst displaying the fakest smile sheā€™d ever put on. ā€œJoffreyā€ she said lightly. ā€œHow are you?ā€
ā€œBetter than you, thatā€™s for sure.ā€ He snickered. ā€œWhatā€™s up with the whore attire? Itā€™s not like youā€™ve got someone to impress. Unlessā€ his eyes gleamed in a way that made Sansa shiver ā€œyouā€™ve dressed up like this for meā€.
ā€œIā€™m afraid that would not be the case.ā€ Sansa pursed her lips together. Being around Joffrey always made her feel uneasy, even while they were dating. There just was something that was not right with the boy. After everything that happened, Sansa believed sheā€™d grown stronger but being there, alone with him, she felt every hair at the back of her head stand up. Her whole body already tensing.
ā€œOh?ā€ Joffrey furrowed his brow, his tone growing unkinder by the minute. ā€œWhat then? Are you trying to rig the elections by showing off your cunt? So that dear olā€™ daddy will win? I hate democracy.ā€
ā€œMy Father is not even running for the position.ā€ Sansaā€™s hand closed around the glass tightly. She was determined not to lose her temper if only for her Fatherā€™s sake. Even so, Joffrey was making that task very challenging for her.
ā€œYouā€™re doing it for me then?ā€ Joffrey took a step closer to Sansa. His breath reeked of cheap vodka and Sansa had to suppress a grimace. She noticed the glass on his left hand was full, which meant that was not his first drink of the night. ā€œYou know, tonight after this, I could come pay you a little visit-ā€œ He grabbed her arm forcefully as he inched even closer.
ā€œJoffrey, donā€™t-ā€œ
ā€œSans, darling!ā€ Both heads turned around and were greeted by the sight of one Margaery Tyrell, who has approaching them with a beaming smile. ā€œIā€™ve been looking everywhere for you! You had me worried.ā€ She hugged Sansa tightly and planted a soundly kiss on her right cheek as she withdrew away. Her eyes never leaving Sansaā€™s face. ā€œWhat a beautiful dress! You look absolutely stunning.ā€
The fact that sheā€™d completely ignored Joffrey made the boy furious. ā€œMargaeryā€ he called, malice dripping off his voice, but he tried to disguise as courtesy. Only he didnā€™t fool anyone. ā€œI was not aware you were coming.ā€
Finally, Margaery looked at the boy. She smiled easily at him, as if she was actually pleased to be talking to him. ā€œOh, I wouldā€™ve arrived sooner, but Grandmother ran into an old friend of hers by the entrance and we were held back a few minutes.ā€
ā€œI see.ā€ Joffrey nodded his head. He didnā€™t match Margaeryā€™s smile, opting instead for a scowl. He had planned to have his fun with Sansa for a while longer, but it didnā€™t look like Margaery would be leaving them alone anytime soon. Instead, the brunette slipped her arm around Sansaā€™s waist and pulled her flush against her.
Sansa for the life of her didnā€™t know what to make of it. Joffrey and Margaery were staring each other down, not saying a word, and the redhead felt as if the lion and the rose were silently trying to scare the other away.
ā€œIā€™m sorry I had to make you wait for so longā€ Margaery told Sansa casually after some time, as if the latter had been actually waiting for her.
ā€œOh, itā€™s no problem.ā€ Sansa smiled back at her. She realised Margaeryā€™s smile seemed more sincere when it was directed at her, in contrast to the oneā€™s she threw at Joffrey which ā€“in Sansaā€™s opinionā€“ appeared to be mocking the boy.
ā€œI didnā€™t know you two were friends.ā€ Joffrey spat at them. At that, Margaery actually threw her head back and so laughed loudly youā€™d think sheā€™d just heard the greatest joke of all time. ā€œDid I say something amusing?ā€ He growled. Sansa could feel rather than see the tension between Joffrey and Margaery. She didnā€™t like it one bit and wanted so desperately to make it stop. But she didnā€™t know how to cut in. It looked like they were playing at a game Sansa did not know the rules of.
ā€œWell, yes.ā€ Margaery chuckled as her laughter died down. Then, she turned to Sansa right as Joffrey chose the worst possible time to try and end his drink in one go. ā€œI thought you wouldā€™ve told him by now weā€™re dating.ā€
If Sansa hadnā€™t been so busy choking on air, she wouldā€™ve laughed at the way Joffrey accidentally spat out half of his drink on his clothes and his eyes bulged comically. Margaery noticed straight away Sansaā€™s confusion, so she took advantage of the fact that Joffrey was distracted drying the alcohol stains on his clothes and inched close to Sansaā€™s ear. ā€œI can get rid of this little bastard in no time, just play along.ā€
Sansa nodded her approval and silently thanked her lucky stars for Margaery. Sheā€™d known the girl for a few years now, and ever since the beginning, sheā€™d looked up at the older girl with such admiration. Everything about Margaery fascinated Sansa.
A couple of months into their friendship and Sansa was already enamoured with everything the brunette did. It wasnā€™t until Margaery casually told the redhead about her preference for women that Sansaā€™s mind began to wonder whether she had a shot with her. The thought scared her at first, back when she deemed herself to be as straight as an arrow, but as weeks and months passed, she realised sheā€™d started to see Margaery in a different light. Or maybe it wasnā€™t a different light at all. Maybe her feeling had always been there but she had not realised it until then.
The thing is, ever since Sansa found out this new piece of information, she couldnā€™t help but notice every single little thing about Margaery. Like the way her nose would scrunch whenever she smelt something she didnā€™t like ā€“like curry, smoke or gasolineā€“ and the way she would close her eyes and breathe in contently when she smelt something she fancied ā€“like roses, fresh pastries, the sea or Sansaā€™s perfume, although Sansa tried not to think too much about the last; lest she allowed herself to get her hopes up when she was certain a girl as stunning and perfect as Margaery wouldnā€™t notice a silly girl like herself.
Still, from time to time, she would let herself dream about what it would be like to be with Margaery, to be able to wake up next to her every day and be the reason behind her smiles and giggles, to be the first and last thing on her mind, to be the one Margaery wanted to spend her days and nights with.
It was Joffreyā€™s voice that brought Sansa out of her trance and back to reality. ā€œYou what?!ā€ He was looking directly at Sansa as if sheā€™d done him a great wrong. His face was bright red and his hand gripped too tightly on the glass. ā€œJust when I thought you couldnā€™t be more disgusting, you do this.ā€ He gestured at Sansaā€™s general direction, as if that would be explanation enough. ā€œYou dragged poor sweet Margaery into this fucking mess of yours. You perverted her with your deviating ways.ā€
Sansa had kept her cool this long and she had intended on doing so until Joffrey got bored and walked away on his own, but the very same moment he had demeaned Margaery like that was all it took for Sansa to snap at him. She took a daring step closer to him. ā€œYou talk to her again with such insolence and I promise youā€™ll regret it.ā€
ā€œOh, yeah? And what are you going to do?ā€ Joffrey mocked.
ā€œIā€™ll send Lady whilst you sleep to make sure youā€™re reminded of your place.ā€ She gritted her teeth together.
ā€œYou, bitch.ā€ Joffrey spat. ā€œYou canā€™t talk to me like that!ā€
ā€œOf course I canā€ Sansa countered. Her blood was boiling and she felt like she was seconds away from doing something her Father would without a doubt chastise her later for. Still, she didnā€™t find it in herself to care. Not when Joffrey had insulted Margaery so blatantly. ā€œIf you knew whatā€™s best for you, youā€™d walk the fuck away.ā€
Margaery widened her eyes and turned her head towards Sansa. It was the first time sheā€™d ever heard the Northerner curse.
ā€œLast time I saw youā€ the boy foolishly charged once more against the redhead, thinking he could still win the argument ā€œyou were dating that Bolton boy; so what happened that turned you into a dyke?ā€ He snarled ā€œWasnā€™t his cock good enough?ā€ Sansa didnā€™t know whether it was the remark or the laugh that came after that infuriated her most. She clenched her fists as her shoulders began to shake. It wouldnā€™t take long before she lost whatever remained of her composure. But Sansa had long lost interest in looking calm and collected, her sole attention being now focused on the boy.
ā€œPardon meā€ Margaeryā€™s voice came out mellow and calm, but she was ready to throw hands. She let go of Sansa in order to stand between Joffrey and the redhead. She wouldā€™ve blocked Sansaā€™s view if it werenā€™t for Sansaā€™s height. Still, she intended on becoming some sort of human shield for the Northerner. ā€œAnd who do you think you are to talk to my girl like that?ā€ She took a defiantly step closer to the boy ā€œshe can dress however she pleasesā€ another step ā€œsay whatever she pleasesā€ another one ā€œand date whomever she pleases.ā€ Joffrey ended having to recoil a couple of steps back in order to maintain his balance. ā€œLet this be the last time you disrespect Sansa, because so help me Gods, if I ever hear you say a single bad thing about her again I will hunt your ass down and beat you up so badly your own mother wonā€™t recognise you.ā€ Margaery was normally a very diplomatic and collected person, but Joffrey was managing to push every single one of her buttons.
ā€œCome on, Margaery. You canā€™t possibly want to be around her.ā€ He pronounced the last word as if it actually physically pained him to say it. ā€œLet me take you out instead. Iā€™ll show you what a real relationship looks like.ā€
ā€œIā€™ll say this one more time and I swear it will be the last.ā€ Margaery blinked almost flirtatiously. Her tone was soft but her eyes left no room for misinterpretation. She was furious. ā€œStep the fuck away from my girl.ā€
Realising now Margaery had also turned on him, he decided to back down. ā€œYou know what? I have no use for her anyway.ā€ Joffrey took a step closer to Margaery, which was compensated by Sansa stepping forward as well. The action resulted on Sansa being pressed firmly against Margaeryā€™s back; the latter had to use some strength to hold the redhead back, lest she lost her nerves and pounced on the blonde. ā€œYou can keep your bitch.ā€
And that was that. It was then, right as the boy laughed cruelly at his own comment that she lost it. Even though Sansaā€™s anger was off the roof, it was Margaeryā€™s punch that collided with his face. He threw some insults her way but Margaery couldnā€™t make out the words, given that his hands were cupping his bloody nose.
ā€œYou fucking dykes! Youā€™ll regret this! You both will!ā€ He yelled before storming off. As he ran to the bathroom, the brunette noticed the silence surrounding them and she casted her glance to the side in order to see the other attendantā€™s reaction.
The first person she saw was Cersei Lannister. The woman pursed her lips together but said nothing. She just stared at Margaery down for a few seconds before running after her son to aid him. Robert Baratheon cursed aloud and begrudgingly went to the bathroom as well. Margaery also noticed both Tommen and Myrcella offering her a tiny smile, displaying no kind of sympathy for their brother before Jaime Lannister was by their side. He calmly told them to go with him outside.
On the other end of the room was Theon, wearing a shit-eating grin and no doubt already planning on congratulating Margaery afterwards. Stood by his side was Robb, and although his face betrayed no emotion, he gave the brunette a subtle thumbs up.
ā€œWooooo!ā€ Arya suddenly yelled, throwing both her hands up in the air, as if celebrating a touchdown. Her beer long gone. ā€œNow this is a party!ā€ Her smile matched Theonā€™s.
ā€œI wouldnā€™t have done that if I were you.ā€ Came a voice from behind Margaery. ā€œI mean, I wouldā€™ve, I definitely wouldā€™ve because that douchebag had it coming butā€ Sansa grabbed Margaeryā€™s bruised hand with much delicacy ā€œIā€™m not sure thatā€™s gonna sit well with your Grandmother, and much less the Lannisters.ā€
ā€œWellā€ Margaery chuckled despite what happened ā€œsomeone had to shut him up. Let me worry about them later.ā€
ā€œThank youā€ Sansa relaxed now that Joffrey was out of sight; her smile was timid but sincere ā€œreally.ā€
ā€œNo need to thank me, sweet girl.ā€ Margaery smiled brightly at the redhead. ā€œIā€™ve wanted to do that for ages, if Iā€™m being honest.ā€ That earned her a chuckle from Sansa.
ā€œMargaery.ā€ The brunetteā€™s smile faltered away as soon as the voice came. She turned around slowly.
ā€œGrandmother.ā€ Margaery pursed her lips together. She knew her act would have consequences and even though she was well aware Grandmother Olenna didnā€™t like the Lannister boy one bit, she knew sheā€™d have to deal with the result of her actions.
ā€œMay we speak alone?ā€ It was a question, but the tone of voice with which it was accompanied left no room for objections. Margaery nodded, muttered ā€˜Sorryā€™ to Sansa and started to walk behind her Grandmother.
Not a full ten seconds had passed that Arya was by her sisterā€™s side. ā€œSo, you two banging?ā€ Arya bluntly asked Sansa once Margaery was out of earshot. She grabbed a beer from the table and took a large sip. ā€œI heard Joffrey muttering something about you two dating. Althoughā€ she added ā€œhe used a much crasser terminology.ā€
For the second time that night, Sansa choked on her spit. ā€œWha- weā€™re not- I meanā€ she corrected herself, remembering Margaery had indeed referred to herself as her girlfriend. Not wanting to blow the Highgardenerā€™s cover she quickly said: ā€œWe started out as friends!ā€
ā€œYour point?ā€ Arya tilted her head to the side and watched her sister expectantly. She didnā€™t particularly care about who Sansa was or wasnā€™t shagging, but she figured watching the redhead ramble would be a close second to the most fun sheā€™d have that night so she was determined to stretch this conversation as much as she possibly could.
ā€œI mean, you knowā€¦ā€ Sansa was visibly struggling to find the right words but given that Arya was in no rush she watched amusedly as the taller girl gesticulated ambiguously with her hand in the air. ā€œWe were friends, so we decided to take it slow.ā€
ā€œHow come none of us knew you two were a thing?ā€ The shorter girl asked.
ā€œItā€™s still pretty new. We didnā€™t want to jinx it.ā€ Arya hummed, seemingly content with the answer.
ā€œI have to sayā€ she paused to take another sip of her beer ā€œyour girl does clean up pretty nice. Sheā€™s caught the attention of every single man ā€“and some womenā€“ since the moment she entered the building.ā€
The jealousy that coursed through Sansaā€™s body then was both unexpected and foreign. She had definitely noticed how extremely beautiful Margaery looked that night. The dress she wore was a shade of deep forest green and whereas Sansaā€™s straps had been relatively thin, Margaeryā€™s were fairly broad, to make up for the plunging neckline she was showing off. The top half of her back was bare but her hair cascaded down flawlessly and covered some skin.
Sansa couldnā€™t blame the attendants for staring, because the sight was truly mesmerizing, what she did disapprove of, however, was how most of those looks seemed to only be directed at her cleavage. When the realisation crossed her mind Sansa felt a sense of possessiveness and, although she wouldnā€™t admit it even to herself, the thought ā€˜mineā€™ did come to mind.
As Arya cleared her throat, it occurred to Sansa that her sister was still waiting for an answer. ā€œNo surprise here.ā€ Sansa shrugged casually as her gaze was directed at Margaery. The older girl was at the far end of the room, speaking with Lady Olenna. ā€œSheā€™s beautiful.ā€
Arya followed Sansaā€™s eyes until she saw Margaery. It did not go unnoticed by her sister the fact Sansaā€™s expression softened upon seeing the older girl. Arya smiled softly ā€“mostly to herself. Sheā€™d known from the very first instant that Margaery had lied about dating Sansa, but she also knew about her sisterā€™s feelings for the Tyrell girl. The redhead was pretty good at disguising her emotions, so only a very observant person would notice it. And despite her many flaws, if Arya was one thing was observant.
ā€œYouā€™ll still want to be careful around Cersei, though.ā€ The shorter girl warned after a couple of minutes of comfortable silence. ā€œSheā€™s gonna want to strangle you as soon as the bastard is okay. The Lannisters are going to take Joffreyā€™s ex-girlfriend dating a lesbian as a great insult. It hurts their pride or some shit.ā€
ā€œI knowā€ Sansa sighed. She turned around and poured herself another glass of whiskey. ā€œLetā€™s worry about that later, okay?ā€ Arya nodded. She was about to add something else when she spotted out of the corner of her eye Margaery and her Grandmother approaching them. Arya excused herself in order to give her sister some privacy.
ā€œSansa, I would like you to meet my Grandmother.ā€ Margaery offered her Grandmother a glass of wine and poured herself another one.
ā€œOlenna Tyrell, dear.ā€ Sansa was expecting her to hold out her hand but the woman never did. ā€œI take it youā€™ve heard about me.ā€ She took a sip of her own drink which prompted Margaery to do the same.
ā€œI have, maā€™am.ā€ Sansa nodded. ā€œI apologise for causing such a scene tonight.ā€ She lamented.
ā€œNonsense.ā€ The woman shook her head, taking the heat out of it. ā€œThe only thing Iā€™m sorry for is that you couldnā€™t take a swing at him yourself as well.ā€ Sansa smiled timidly.
ā€œGrandmother!ā€ Margaery snickered. ā€œWhat will Sansa think of us? You raised me to be well-mannered.ā€
ā€œAnd so Iā€™ve done, dear.ā€ Lady Olenna solemnly said. ā€œYou did well by your girlfriend when you knocked the troubled boy off his high horse.ā€ Sansa blushed as she noticed Lady Olenna had referred to her as her granddaughterā€™s ā€˜girlfriendā€™.
ā€œI take it youā€™re not angry at Margaery, then?ā€ The Northerner sheepishly asked.
ā€œI would have preferred my granddaughter to have had the decency to wait to pull off something like away from so many prying eyes, butā€ Lady Olenna sighed ā€œI know just how loyal the girl can be to the people she loves and if your honour was on the table, well then, there was nothing nobody couldā€™ve done to stop her.ā€
Sansa glanced at Margaery and was surprised when the older girl blushed and refused to meet her gaze. ā€œThatā€™s very kind of you to say, maā€™am.ā€ The redhead thanked the woman.
Lady Olenna hummed. ā€œAnyway, Iā€™m spotting the cheese plate I was promised about 10 minutes agoā€ She looked over her shoulder. ā€œIf you ladies will excuse me, Iā€™m going to eat the food I paid for.ā€ The woman bid her goodbyes, leaving the two girls alone.
ā€œSorry about her.ā€ Margaery shook her head. ā€œShe can be a tad blunt sometimes.ā€
ā€œItā€™s okay.ā€ Sansa shrugged. ā€œI like her.ā€
ā€œIā€™m glad.ā€ Margaery smiled easily at Sansa.
There was something at the back of her mind that was nagging Sansa. She didnā€™t know how to subtly approach the subject so she just dove right in. ā€œWhy did you say we were dating?ā€ The question and the boldness with which Sansa said it took Margaery aback. ā€œI mean, if you wanted to defend meā€ upon the lack of a direct response Sansa decided to clarify ā€œyou couldā€™ve just done so without telling him we were a couple.ā€ Sansa tilted her head to the side expectantly.
ā€œAnd whereā€™s the fun in that?ā€ Margaery winked flirtatiously. The gesture made Sansa blush once again. ā€œBesides, you look marvellous, darling. It would only be fit for you to have a date for the night.ā€ Sansa tried not to think about the fact that her heart was beating faster with every word Margaery spoke. ā€œUnlessā€ she added on second thought ā€œyou wanted to be with someone else?ā€
ā€œNo!ā€ It was almost embarrassing how quick Sansa declined the suggestion. She felt her face turn even redder, so she cleared her throat. ā€œSo, does this mean we have to keep up the charade all night long?ā€ She chuckled to cover up her eagerness.
There was a gleam in Margaeryā€™s eye that made Sansa shiver, but in a good way. ā€œWanna find out how many people we can scandalise by being extra affectionate in public?ā€
And if there was something Sansa was unable to do was deny Margaery anything. ā€œGame on.ā€

šŸ™‹ ; ned stark, concept of family and what it means to them
For Eddard family is INTENSELY important, Thereā€™s honestly not much heā€™d put before it. The only things i can think of him putting before it is duty and only really then when he knows he has no choice or the consequences to the lives of thousands ( say if he could secure his childā€™s life but doom loads of people by doing it ).Ā
Eddard watched in his lifetime pm ALL of his family save his baby brother die and he had to bury all of them. He was with Lyanna in her dying moments, he saw the mangled corpses of the targaryen children. One of his fuck ups that leads to his death in canon is that he could not bear going after Cerseiā€™s children. He doesnā€™t like Cersei at all and her children are bastards of incest, all this would be enough for other men, even honorable men to at least sieze them at hostages if not kill them which is kinda implied what would happen to them. But Eddard canā€™t do that, he likely couldnā€™t have before and he certainly canā€™t do it now as a father. He honestly cannot FATHOM Cersei keeping her children in Danger Central when she can keep them safe at the Rock but he doesnā€™t know sheā€™s batshit.
Being a father is honestly the bright shining JOY of Eddardā€™s life, he loves all his children ( and yes Jon is counted in his mind as his son even tho heā€™s his nephew ) and he loves being their father. The two most important things to him are his duties as Lord of Winterfell and his family and only one of those is something he actually wanted. He sees his children truly as children and not as part of the whole political thing, though he does acknowledge there are expections for them. Example of his opposite: Mace loves the fuck outta Margaery but that ainā€™t gonna stop him from making Joff/Marg happen for Tyrell political gain. Eddard woulda balked after seeing how Truly Shit Joff was along w/ ofc the Other Shit. But like, no way is Eddard letting his baby in 50ft of a Ramsay Jr. Not for ANY reason. Not if heā€™s aware of their bullshit and has a say.
He treasures his time with each of them and what makes them unique. He sees how different Sansa and Arya are and he never pushes them to be like the other or fit a mold. The fact he so willingly letā€™s Arya learn swordsmanship is honestly super telling about how much he loves and gets his kids.Ā
He has always loved and appreciated his family and after losing his parents and siblings, most of them in HORRIFIC ways honestly the thing that kept him from Total Despair was starting a new life with Catelyn and having their children. Cat and the kids are his Hope, his Joy, his Reason. The ONLY times Eddard has dishonored himself ( and this is in the Westerosi noble conception of it not our modern one ) have been for FAMILY. He lies about Jon to protect him and promises Lyanna to keep him safe and he recants the twincest accusation to save Sansaā€™s life. And this is the dude who gets boiled down to an honor before reason caricature so you know thatā€™s some Big Deal Shit.

bedsides the hunger games au are there any other auā€™s we havenā€™t heart of that youā€™ve thought out or just drafts that will stay drafts. Itā€™s just so fun and interesting hearing about any upcoming stories or just your take on jon and sansa in a different universe
I have a BUNCH, but Iā€™m only gonna talk about the ones Iā€™m really excited about.
apocalyptic crush - a superhero au where Jon is a mixture of Batman and Azrael, and after losing his parents to mob violence, becomes the Black Knight. In the earliest days of his career, he saved Sansa Stark, who lost her parents the same way. 10 years later, Jon is dating Sansa, who after all these years, still carries a torch for the hero who saved her. He must decide between telling her the truth and losing her forever, or go on living their blissful lie. Oneshot. Just a tad angsty. Rating: Mature
in good faith - the suits au thatā€™s a jessharvey/darvey/mikeharvey fusion. Jon paid for Sansaā€™s law school after she impressed him with her work as a paralegal, and has been his associate ever since. Too bad sheā€™s in love with him, something that becomes all too apparent when Jon agrees to a merger with Daenerys Targaryen to save whatā€™s left of his firm. Oneshot. SUUUUUUUPER angsty. Rating: Mature
sweetbitter - title still a wip. the (you guessed it) sweetbitter au in which Jon is one of the best chefs in New York City, and Sansa works at his restaurant and canā€™t help but feel drawn to him. Two shot. Angsty. Rating: SUUUUUUPER EXPLICIT.
conversations with friends - title is still a wip. Another Aegon/Sansa/Jon story. Sansa is a former ballerina who is maybe a little too unhealthily attached to Aegon, her ex boyfriend and best friend of the better part of a decade. Until she meets Jon, his older lawyer estranged brother, who happens to be married. Two shot I think. SUUUUUPER ANGSTY. Rating: VERY VERY EXPLICIT.
I wanna be your healing - pretty woman au. Self explanatory.
godā€™s own country au - Jon is a groundskeeper. Sansa is a tutor and au pair. Lots of self loathing and sexual tension. Angsty. VERY explicit.
Untitled - a canon divergent magical realism fusion. In exchange for his wifeā€™s life, Ned Stark was to give the old god of Death another. He did not know that it was his unborn eldest daughter.
untitled #2* - canon divergent. Centers the second generation of Starks. based of the king. In the wake of his motherā€™s death, 19 year old Robb is made king. His first task is to keep his people from going to war with the dragon queen of the south and keep his brothers and sisters safe. His second task is to get to know the man who is his father, who seems to only care about vengeance and will do whatever it takes to get it.
untitled #3 - bridgerton/the favourite fusion.
These are all things I definitely still intend to post. I donā€™t know when theyā€™ll get released but I still want to post them! The asterisk one is an exception though Iā€™m probably just gonna keep that one for me because it might be too controversial.....anyway these are only some of the ideas I have the others havenā€™t been fully realized yet.

Some ASOIAF kids in the Hunger Games...
- Dany. My first thought was that there could be some sort of fire in the arena she survives, and suddenly everyone watching becomes obsessed with her and she gets loads of sponsors. But the reason she emerges from the pyre alive in AGOT is because she uses magic, which doesnā€™t exist in the hunger games universe. My thoughts other than that though, are that although she is smaller and younger than most of the other tributes and does not really have any combat training, she would survive for a while through allies. She makes loads of friends in the training period and goes into the arena with many of the others willing to fight to protect her. She would be killed eventually though.
- Quentyn. oh my poor boy goes into these games really wanting to fight bravely and make his father proud but ends up suffering a long and painful death :(
- Joffrey. Ooh he would be pretty terrifying in the arena, he would fight more viciously and with more ferocity than anyone else and any deaths he inflicts would be very cruel. However, due to his age and a not particularly high level of combat skill (plus probably not great survival skills) he probably ainā€™t surviving.
- Loras. An audience favourite going into the games, definitely, everyone loves him and thinks heā€™s going to win, heā€™s very clearly a strong and skilled fighter and gets a very good training score and has lots of sponsors. Heā€™d do fairly well in the arena, and would kill a lot of people, and his sponsors would make sure he doesnā€™t lack for food, medicine, anything else he needs, but in the end heā€™d probably be outsmarted by someone or maybe even meet someone whoā€™s a match for him in a fight *cough* Brienne
- And talking of Brienne.... Sheā€™s a really interesting one. Letā€™s just imagine it, sheā€™s reached eighteen, sheā€™s nearly made it through all her Reapings, and her name is called. And even though she wants to prove her worth as a fighter and to win honour and respect... not like this. Not by killing innocent children. In training she vows to protect the Stark girls. Sheā€™s the strongest and most skilled fighter in there, but eventually she does get killed fighting for them.
- Jon. Heā€™s a very good fighter, gets a good training score, and could do really well if he wanted too, but... ultimately this boy is too reluctant to kill innocents to win the hunger games.
- Sam. Oh this poor boy ainā€™t lasting long :( I love him, but heā€™d be so terrified. Heā€™d run straight away but heā€™d not be fast enough and his legs would probably be shaking from fear, someoneā€™s gonna kill him pretty quickly :(
- Robb. Like Loras, an audience favourite going into the games. Another pretty good fighter, but again... heā€™s not going to survive. Heā€™s too honourable. Thereā€™s probably some major scandal when his body gets horribly desecrated before the Gamemakers can retrieve it.
- (Older) Sansa. Okay I love her, and sheā€™s so strong and brave and clever... but not in the way thatā€™s going to allow her to thrive in the arena. Maybe she could sing a song about mercy to anyone who tries to kill her?
- (Older) Arya. This girl would actually really love the training, sheā€™s definitely the one who works hardest and tries all the different things on offer and learns loads, going into the arena with a lot of new skills. and sheā€™d be fairly deadly in the arena, has some good kills, mostly, like in ASOIAF, through trickery and taking people by surprise rather than actually by beating them in hand to hand combat. Sheā€™s little and a lot of people overlook her to their peril. But eventually, sheā€™d come across someone much bigger and stronger who she simply cannot overpower, so sheā€™d be killed eventually.
- (Older) Bran, who hasnā€™t had a fall in this au. This boy is so loveable everyone heā€™d win the nationā€™s hearts and minds before heā€™s even in the arena. And he is going to thrive if there is a mountain or really high trees or something in the arena, anything he can climb so that heā€™s out of peopleā€™s reach. Imagine Cat watching at home, having always worried about Branā€™s climbing but seeing it save his life over and over again and being so proud of him! Ultimately, though, heā€™s gotta come down at some point and then heā€™s going to be very vulnerable being one of the youngest. Heā€™s not realistically going to survive.
- (Older) Rickon. Okay, this boy goes absolutely feral in the arena, is deadly with his spear, makes friends with a wolf the capitol put in there to kill tributes, and said wolf ends up fighting alongside him and killing anyone who tries to hurt Rickon. Ned and cat at home are absolutely horrified watching what becomes of their little boy, but at the same time are thrilled there actually seems to be a chance of him surviving. Because youā€™ve guessed it, heā€™s whoā€™s most likely to win.

Do you think after seeing the mess that was jonerys grrm decided that he would better do not make it happen and go full ally turned enemy without any incest factor? Imagine both Jon n Dany despised each other from their first meet, reluctantly agreed to be allied which botched by Dany temperament and Jon parentage reveal making them enemies. Also Jon will be like I hope this dragon queen leave me alone so I can have lemoncakesā€‹ time with my half sister/ cousin.
I need to take a moment to enjoy the beauty of that closer. lmao!Ā
We wonā€™t know exactly what Martinā€™s plans for Jon/Dany are until we get the books, but I donā€™t think there is any way he would change them because of the show. He has dedicated a huge chunk of his life to this series, and I donā€™t think he will allow D&Dā€™s failure to push him off course. He isnā€™t going to redirect toĀ cater to the whims of fans either.
We donā€™t know what D&D were told, what they disregarded, what they reinterpreted until it had no meaning, or what they included that wasnā€™t part of Martinā€™s vision. Were s7-8 a really bad adaptation because they left out important characters/mischaracterized the rest, or did they take an entirely different route? Martin called GoT a faithful adaptation (x), but we know how much D&D deviated from the existing books, so that doesnā€™t mean jxnerys is a given. If it doesnā€™t happen,Ā that wouldnā€™t be because Martin changed his mind, it would just prove that D&D fabricated it to hide Dark Dany.Ā
If the story is about getting Dany North, I do think incest will factor in because I think it makes sense for Dany to fall in love and Jon use that to get the help he needs to save the world. I say that becauseĀ she has her romantic tendencies that leave her vulnerable. She craves love. She wants to be the maiden who is rescued. (It always amuses me when people hate on Sansa for her interest in stories when we have Dany daydreaming about this scenario but anyway...).Ā Jon isnā€™t like Daario, but, depending on what Dany hears/believes him to be, Martin could write a one-sided romance. I certainly donā€™t think Jon would be into it, but it could be he feels he doesnā€™t have the option of refusing her.
The problem is, Dany is gonna take a while to get to Westeros, so itā€™s really hard to imagine the timeline that would allow her to go North to fight the Others and then go South and burn KL. And, if she burns KL first, I donā€™t see how Jon could think going to her is an option. We also have Aegon to think about. They kinda were using Jon for something that Aegon will be used for in the books, so I donā€™t think theĀ ā€œrightful heirā€ issue is part of the J/D story. It feels like itā€™s about Jon choosing Stark v Targ, and therefore, their relationship should be about family rather than sex. Weā€™ve already seen that Jon will betray a woman/lover for the greater good, but the idea that this time he has to betray (even kill) family for the greater good would be a new and painful test.
Hereā€™s a great meta about the Jon/Dany foreshadowing being about Dance of Dragons 2.0. Letā€™s hope thatā€™s what we get!

if you ever wrote that rant about grrm making jon his chosen one deconstruction i'd be very happy to read it šŸ‘€
hello anon sorry for the lateness but here we go *deep breath*
sssooo, I had once ranted about it though not mentioning the thing I mentioned in those tags so lemme see if I can find the op and like... cp the main argument and amend it bc it was long, but okay so I found it, original anon asked me: why is Jon considered to be one of the most special characters grrm created? Why is he not the typical hero of fantasy books?, my original answer was here if anyone wants to go there but basically lemme just cp the first part making it shorter and then I'm adding:
first thing, the Typical Post-Tolkien Chosen One With A Shitty Life Before He Finds Out He Is Chosenā„¢ character (Iā€™m saying post-tolkien because every fantasy writer in existence who copies tolkien thinks that lotr went like that and instead it didnā€™t) usually goes through the following steps: his life sucks up until the beginning of the series, his family generally hates him/her or doesnā€™t appreciate them or abuses them or anyway doesnā€™t make their life easier and theyā€™ve never known any different, but *something* never quite worked right and they always knew something was missing in their life, they just didnā€™t know why. suddenly someone who knows they were Chosenā„¢ shows up and tells them that theyā€™re actually Special because of this this and that and they have a quest to go on to save the world or something. our hero/heroine obviously is finally validated and while their quest is hard and full of hardships and maybe they lose a few friends along the way, finding out that they were Chosen gives their life meaning, they usually find love/friends/everything they didnā€™t have before until they fulfill the Prophecyā„¢ and live more or less happily ever after, possibly after hooking up with the Person Of Their Dreams with whom they had UST up until the last twenty pages of the book. basically: being Chosenā„¢ in regular fantasy novels is a good thing because suddenly youā€™re special and all the crap you suffered acquires a new meaning and in the end it made your life better.
jon snow is a complete overhaul of about everything in this sense because
instead of having a family who hates him he has a family who actually mostly lovesĀ him, and with ned itā€™s arguably so much that he risks royal treason by keeping him hidden from his *best friend* - sure, thereā€™s cat and peripherally sansa, but his issues stem from the fact that he feels lesser because heā€™s a bastard (as far as he knows) and itā€™s a *class* issue, not a *my family hates me* issue not counting catelyn obv but that's what gives him freudian issues more on that in the emended part later
no oneĀ actually knows that heā€™s Chosenā„¢ - like mel could get there and probably will and someone will put two and two together when his parentage comes out in the open, but he doesnā€™t have a gandalf or mentor who shows him The Way Towards His Quest
so instead of going fromĀ ā€˜my life sucks but Iā€™m going on a quest which is gonna be a+ā€™ he actively chooses to leave a fairly decent situation (a household he knows, siblings who love him - ned actually hoped heā€™d become robbā€™s counselor or right hand man or something from what we can gather) because he feels like he has to prove heā€™s better than his name and goes to the Crappiest Place In Westeros. like idk if people grasp it, but the wall is basically a prison and at the ripe age of fourteen he decides that itā€™s totally a good and honorable choice (his only choice actually) to go defend the realm in the freezing cold along with a bunch of criminals/derelicts/rejects of society
at which point he makes friends among said rejects and letā€™s remember that itā€™s the point where he actually has to do his first an only privilege when donal noye made him go like hey you were brought up with nobles these ppl are here because they stole bread, and that helps making him more into the person he is rn but like your tyopical fantasy hero who has had a shitty life doesnā€™t usually have to acknowledge that other people might have had it worse
then he goes on the Quest where he finds his first One True Love, and thatā€™s where it turns even worse because usually the quest is where things start to go right for the Heroā„¢, instead for jon they start to go wronger, because first he has to go undercover which pretty much tests most of his belief/code system, he falls in love with a girl he has to betray, half of his friends and his lord commander die along the way, while heā€™s off doing his thing winterfell gets taken/burned and robb dies when jon openly stated that he also was going to the wall to defend his family and keep them safe (yeaaah worked out real well), when he goes back to the wall he has to fight the people he lived with for months, the woman he loves dies in his arms and he canā€™t do anything about it andĀ heā€™s aware it couldnā€™t have gone any other way, people put defending the wall on him and then put his loyalty in question, when stannis shows up with a legitimization (which is everything he ever wanted) he refuses because he doesnā€™t want to accidentally steal his siblingsā€™s inheritance (which was what cat was so worried about hahaha) and actively chooses the crappy defending the realm life all over again. also in all this time his being Chosenā„¢ hasnā€™t manifested or helped him in any way whatsoever - actually all his honor-moral code related baggage is what Ā moral dilemmas come from that. like, your usual chosen heroā„¢ would always take the right decision and it all turns out good eventually, jon takes the morally right decision and it all turns SOUR eventually
at this point he finally gets elected LC, thanks to his friends also pitching in, which is about the one fantasy heroā„¢ thing thatā€™s happened for now. should be good, yes?
lol no, because he ends up with THAT hellish responsibility at sixteen, since he thinks that he has absolutely to be even better than that nowĀ and he has very specific notions about how you should lead and he knows he has to take unpopular decisions/decisions that he doesnā€™t necessarily like, he ends up either having to send his friends away forreal (sam) or detaching from them (pyp/grenn/the likes) and when as far as he knows he learns that his sister is married to ramsay he canā€™t do anything about it
never mind that itā€™s the same situation as when he had to pick the watch or robb in book one - he went there to defend his family and now being there actually prevents him from helping them in person. ops. meanwhile heā€™s trying to implement a new vision of things which is modern and smart and actually makes sense because why fighting the wildlings when you have ZOMBIES coming. your usual Chosen Oneā„¢ would get people to approve just because heā€™s the Chosen One
instead jon gets stabbed to death - okay, that was also because he wanted to go get arya but it was the last straw, people were pissed over the wildlings plan first and foremost
so basically heā€™s gone through all the Chosen Oneā„¢ steps but in reverse - he loses his family which did love him instead of finding another one that makes the first pale in comparison, he does find a new one who loves him but has to alienate most of its members for responsibility reasons as a consequence of what should have been the crowning achievement of his life choices (which eventually is NOT one), he falls in love and they donā€™t drag the UST forever but they never get a chance to be together without small print in between, he chooses the admittedly most masochistic life he could for his family as well and half of them die and he canā€™t do a thing for the other half, every other mentor-like figure he runs into after ned dies, instead of finding validation he ends up having to isolate himself and on top of everything HE STILL DOESNā€™T FUCKING KNOW HEā€™S THE CHOSEN ONEā„¢
so instead of his life going better the more he learns stuff and matures as a person, he gets murdered. by the people he trusts and who were supposed to be his new family. haha?
never mind that when he finds out heā€™s the Chosen Oneā„¢ it wonā€™t bring him closure because all he ever wanted was being full stark like his father/siblings and then bam heā€™s going to find out his fatherā€™s actually targaryen and what does that even mean to him?
on top of that being AA will just be a pain because I donā€™t believe for a second heā€™s not going to get leftover ptsd and who the hell is gonna help him deal with it? or how is he ever getting over his *brothers* murdering him? and people are going to ask stuff of him all over again and heā€™s gonna have to go slay a mythical monster and if I know grrm itā€™s not gonna be fun, pretty or cathartic FOR HIM
on top of that, Chosen Heroā„¢ fulfills the prophecy and gets a realm to rule and everyone lives happily ever after. money is that if jon does get that realm (and I think he is because he has the best claim if he's legitimate and most likely it'll turn out he was on the targ side but ROBB also legitimized him so he has double the legitimization), heā€™s going to hate every second of it and heā€™ll take it because a) duty, b) literally no one else is available, and like this guy didnā€™t want to rule a realm or be a king or anything he just wanted to be a stark, and instead heā€™s going to have to after all that shit thanks to Magical And Noble Heritage he hadnā€™t even known he had and probably didnā€™t even want up to that point because since when jon wanted to be a targ? yeah since never
obviously I hope he manages to be somewhat happy regardless because the alternative is too miserable, but basically being a Chosen Heroā„¢ is what makes jonā€™s life worseĀ rather than better and the fact that hew went through all the regular self-discovery journey for the fantasy hero list doesnā€™t mean heā€™s not flipping that over in his sl. the fact that he stayed a decent person more or less throughout it and that he hasnā€™t turned into a bitter asshole also doesnā€™t change the main point XD
tldr: jon snow is not a typical fantasy hero because he deconstructs that trope into tiny little bits same as robb deconstructed the arthurian flawless king hero trope
now ^^^^^ THAT was what I originally wrote for that meta but adding on to what I said in those tags
okay so... there is a certain tendency to also make the chosen oneā„¢ special in the sense that he's kind of goals - good looking, rich or set to inherit, gallant, takes the initiative, he's like.. social or anyway immediately makes friends etc and all that jazz which jon... doesn't really fit
like jon is an introvert who immediately makes friends just with outcasts and his siblings also bc he feels like one but he's hardly a social butterfly and charms everyone wherever he walks by
I mean ffs says all that the only person he charmed in that sense is stannis who is the literal only person in charge in the books who is more introvert than him and has worse communication issues and appreciates ppl going straight to the point
on top of that in the book he looks like ned.... and arya looks like ned and ned isn't described as being particularly handsome that was brandon so he's not even like... I mean kit h. is v. pretty and I think he was a good choice for the role and I'll die on the hill that he was born to play that character and he did it well but book!jon doesn't have that kinda pretty face so the concept that he's the HOT alternative to anyone to me is kind of iffy bc he's not
he's shit at social interactions and at PR which is why robb and him would have been a key winning ticket like he has a better idea of the larger picture but robb would have actually made sure ppl didn't turn against them bc he actually was good at that but like he doesn't go around rallying armies in his name does he
the one time he's been with a girl it was ygritte and like he courted her without realizing it and then she had to pursue him and he barely knew wtf to do on top of the fact that they slept with ghost in the middle of them like a sword which..... is.... I mean sleeping with the sword in the middle was a thing to make sure the maiden stayed a maiden and he's the one who is like i CAN'T HAVE SEX WITH HER EVEN IF I WANT TO BECAUSE I'M TECHNICALLY SPYING ON THEM like... he's not... gallant-knight coded
never mind that the moment they do the do she basically does everything until he decides to try the oral which I mean... isn't exactly alphadominatingmale out of jon which is not a given with the trope he's supposed to represent like he's not smooth he's not suave he's like WHAT THE FUCK when ygritte tells him he has a pretty face bc most likely no one else told him that and he like... doesn't pursue people like that in general which is also not exactly 100% what that trope usually goes for
we can add that he has a lot of passive-aggressive little shit sarcasm in him that they didn't let him go for in the show but like... usually chosen heroesā„¢ don't think what he thinks about selyse in general
we can also add that he's not automatically above being better than his position like... he doesn't take winterfell bc ygritte is dead but he did think he'd have taken the deal sansa or not if stannis had said he could marry her and not val and if she wasn't dead, he basically went off the rails at the dude he was fighting with thinking about robb telling him that he couldn't be lord of wf because he was a bastard and he's absolutely not in the frame of mind of 'well I was born a bastard who cares it doesn't define me'
he's obsessed to the point of unhealthy with actually being defined by it which is why he was better off with the wildlings aka the only idiots in the realm who don't gaf about that
and that's like... I mean usually if chosen onesā„¢ have parental issues it's like 'you were an orphan and raised by asses who weren't your parents but your parents loved you and you'll find out at some point and you'll be happier for it and make your own family', jon is like... he has the mommy freudian issues of the century bc of how cat treated him, on the other side he's obsessed with living up to ned's/his father's name and he hates that it makes him not-belonging or that he feels like he doesn't even if he does with his siblings, and at the same time when the truth about it comes out he's going to get the cold shower of the century bc like - he's spent all that time thinking BUT DID MY MOTHER WANT ME WHO WAS MY MOTHER and he's going to find out of who it was and how he was born and honestly considering that lyanna most likely did regret running with rhaegar the moment he finds that out and that she died birthing him how is he going to feel? - also he spends his life wanting to live up to his 'father's' name aka ned aka someone known to be honorable to a fault and then it turns out his bio father is... the dude who started that entire rebellion not doing a very honorable thing? - also if jon*erys is a thing idt that he'd take 'I fell in love with my aunt' so nonchalantly as he did in the show tldr: he's never gonna get over his parental issues in a short time and when that particular brick hits him in the face it won't be pretty
like the entire point of jon is that he goes through all the chosenoneā„¢ cursus honorum as we'd call it in high school when studying latin but each step that means smth good for the usual chosenoneā„¢ to him is something bad, being one is not going to make his life better and throughout the entire thing he does not fit that stereotype when it comes to look, personality, basic traits and familial history and like hell he's going to have the happy ending tied up with the bow - like I think he gets a bittersweet one and eventually goes off with the wildlings bc he belongs there after being jon snow first of his name (bc like hell he's not reclaiming his bastard background at the end of this entire mess I'm eating my hat if he doesn't) after splitting the seven realms and fixing things but that's hardly the neat happy ending the chosenoneā„¢ usually gets so that's my two cents
... christ this was long *raises hands*

Note
I wish you would write a JB What We Do in the Shadows AU pls?
You have got me THINKING, anon. There are so many ways you could go with this?Ā
Okay. iā€™m literally just spitting words out on this post but the house would be: Margaery, Cersei, Jaime, Brienne, Stan, and Maester Aemon.
Cersei and Jaime: twins and exes, and everyone brings it up constantly to remind them how gross and embarrassing they used to be like a millenia ago or whatever. Cersei absolutely HATES that Margaery is 300 years younger than her. Absolutely hates it. Is also super paranoid and convinced that Margaery is plotting to kill her.Ā  Jaime is in love with Brienne, quite obviously, and everyone knows it. He was a master swordsman in life, and is extremely angry that the art has died out, and heā€™s constantly looking for new things to be good at. Cersei at one point gets a Nadja-style terrifying doll who is just a copy of her personality. She promptly falls in love with it.Ā
Brienne: Iā€™m gonna say sheā€™s roughly the same age as the twins? She knew Jaime in life, and nearly died saving him from something he didnā€™t need saving from. Jaime turned her, and sheā€™s still mad at him for it. Sheā€™s the reasonable-ish Nandor/Viago one whoā€™s kind of awkward but trying really hard. Letā€™s say Pod is her familiar? But rather than being kind of stingy about turning him, she mostly wants him to be SURE that turning is what he wants, because she kind of wishes that she hadnā€™t been turned.Ā
Margaery: Is definitely plotting to kill Cersei, or maybe just wants to have sex with her? Iā€™m not sure. My main inspiration for this would def be Jennifer from Jenniferā€™s Body lmao: she only kills boys. Sheā€™s also currently flirting with Sansa, who is a werewolf, which is a Big Deal to Everyone Involved.Ā
Stan: Lives in the basement. Works at an office. Classic energy vampire. Please do NOT get him started. Oh my god heā€™s correcting our grammar again (this could also be Ned? Or the High Sparrow? Or so many of the characters in this fucking show/book series)
Aemon: Is Petyr, and terrifying.
The Starks: The werewolf pack. I KNOW ITā€™S OBVIOUS BUT ROBB BEING THE RHYS DARBY CHARACTER IS SO FUNNY TO ME??

GRRM's Original Outline "What has changed?"
Tumblr media
Hello,
Now you all know Martin's letter he wrote in '93. When this letter was written and sent to the editor, the first 13 chapters (200 pages) were already written. In addition, the book consisted of three volumes of the first stage, but as you know, but its 7 volumes now. When we read the letter and the first 5 books, the first comment made was very different and different from the first outline; one or two things remain the same. But is it really? Here I would like to discuss this with you. I think I will go through the events step by step and you will make your own contributions when you read. Let's start!
1. Stark-Lannister war. It's remain, nothing changed.
2. (Dany) Targaryen's 7K invasion with Dothraks. It's still did not happend but we know Dany has Unsullied and some sellswords and next book, she will have Dothraks too. She will linger a little more in essos and then come to the West for the conquer. It's remain too.
3. The Others. GRRM said " Their story will be [sic] heart of my third volume, The Winds of Winter. " It's remain too.
4. Five Main Key Characters (Jon, Arya, Bran, Dany and Tyrion). " In a sense, my trilogy is almost a generational saga, telling the life stories of these five characters, three men and two women. The five key players are Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and three of the children of Winterfell, Arya, Bran, and the bastard Jon Snow." It's remain too.
5. Fall of the Starks. " Things will get a lot worse for the poor Starks before they get better, I'm afraid. " Yes, indeed it happened.
6. Dead of Robert and long may live new king! "Ned will discover what happened to his friend Jon Arryn... will have an unfortunate accident, and the throne will to brutal Joffrey, still a minor." Yes, it happened too. This substance remained the same too.
7.Sansa and Joffrey. "Sansa Stark wed to Joffrey Baratheon, will bear him a son, the heir to the throne, and when the crunch comes she will choose her husband and child over her parents and siblings, a choice she will later bitterly rue. " Sansa betrays his family anyway but she did not wed Joffrey or bear his son. This substance has changed a bit.
8. Bran's coma and dream and greenseer and dead of Robb. " Young Bran will come out of his coma, after a strange prophetic dream... He will turn to magic, at first in the hope of restoring his legs, but later for its own sake... Robb Stark will die in battle."Ā
Bran's the same, but Robb's got some change. Robb doesn't die in a war against Joffrey, Jaime and Tyrion. But he really wins a few battles at first (against Tywin. So there's no Tywin in the first place) and then he dies at the Red Wedding.
Bran's in a coma. So Jaime and Cersei are standing exactly. This shows that Jon Arryn's death is due to his learning of the relationship(Jaime-Cersei). So Joff was a bastard in the first outline too. Ned died for the same reason.
Tyrion did not burn Winterfell but fought against Stark army and became Hand of King. Jaime fought against Robb too and lost, was captured. This part is different in some ways, but the same in some ways.
9. Jon Snow, The Wall and Lord Commander. " Jon Snow, the bastard, will remain in the far north. He will mature into a ranger of great daring, and ultimately will succeed his uncle as the commander of the Night's Watch "
Jon goes the wall and will became lord commander but Benjen was lord commander in the first place but it seems he dies anyway or disappear. It's remain.
10. Helping family and Jonarya Love. " When Winterfell burns, Catelyn Stark will be forced to flee north with her son Bran and her daughter Arya. Wounded by Lannister riders, they will seek refuge at the Wall, but the men of the Night's Watch give up their families when they take the black, and Jon and Benjen will not be able to help, to Jon's anguish. It will lead to a bitter estrangement between Jon and Bran. Arya will be more forgiving ... until she realizes, with terror, that she has fallen in love with Jon, who is not only her half-brother but a man of the Night's Watch, sworn to celibacy. Their passion will continue to torment Jon and Arya throughout the trilogy, until the secret of Jon's true parentage is finally revealed in the last book. "
Winterfell is being burned by Greyjoys. Cat is not with Stark children, he is with Robb. Bran and others run away and went to the Wall. But Bran and others did not take refuge in the black brothers. Jon has something to do with Arya again. He wants to protect and save her(FArya). He can't do it because of his vows and he's in a lot of pain... And we know who is Jon's real parents.
Jon and Arya love... It's still too early to say anything about it. When Arya goes to the wall, the love between the two emerges. Arya escaped from KL as in the first outline. But instead of going home, she drifted into her own adventure. Arya has been trying to get home and Jon all along. She'll probably go straight to the wall when she gets back from Braavos. There are so many hints about Jonarya love in books. ( https://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php?/topic/125364-jon-arya-hints-and-overall-significance-of-their-relationship-including-part-3/ )
11. Beyond The Wall and Bran-Cat-Arya. "Abandoned by the Night's Watch, Catelyn and her children will find their only hope of safety lies even further north, beyond the Wall, where they fall into the hands of Mance Rayder, the King-beyond-the-Wall, and get a dreadful glimpse of the inhuman others as they attack the wilding encampment. Bran's magic, Arya's sword Needle, and the savagery of their direwolves will help them survive, but their mother Catelyn will die at the hands of the others." This part has undergone significant changes. Despite this, some small parts remained.
Arya is not with them, Cat neither but she dies anyway (and came back but as fire wight not ice wight). Bran never meet Mance(yes, Mance exists) and see others but he sees deads and met Cold Hand(ice wight) and BR and Singers. I guess Rickon is not exists.
Arya has Needle, that's mean Jon gave her it anyway. And direwolves...
12. Dany, Viserys and Drogo. ā€œOver across the narrow sea, Daenerys Targaryen will discover that her new husband, the Dothraki Khal Drogo, has little interest in invading the Seven Kingdoms, much to her brother's frustration. When Viserys presses his claims past the point of tact or wisdom, Khal Drogo will finally grow annoyed and kill him out of hand, eliminating the Targaryen pretender and leaving Daenerys as the last of her line. Danerys [sic] will bide her time, but she will not forget. When the moment is right, she will kill her husband to avenge her brother, and then flee with a trusted friend into the wilderness beyond Vaes Dothrak. " Only 5% of this part has changed.
13. Dragon Eggs and Invasion Plans."There, hunted by [unclear] of her life, she stumbles on a [something about dragon eggs] a young dragon will give Daenerys [unclear] bend [unclear] to her will. Then she begins to plan for her invasion of the Seven Kingdoms." This part has changed 95%.
14. Tyrion's Fate. "Tyrion Lannister will continue to travel, to plot, and to play the game of thrones, finally removing his nephew Joffrey in disgust at the boy king's brutality. Jaime Lannister will follow Joffrey on the throne of the Seven Kingdoms, by the simple expedient of killing everyone ahead of him in the line of succession and blaming his brother Tyrion for the murders. Exiled, Tyrion will change sides, making common cause with the surviving Starks to bring his brother down, and falling helplessly in love with Arya Stark while he's at it. His passion is, alas, unreciprocated, but no less intense for that, and it will lead to a deadly rivalry between Tyrion and Jon Snow."
Yes, it seems this part almost completely changed. But Tyrion has been betrayed by his family in every way(Tysha thing and attempt to kill), just it changed "how it will be" This betrayal caused him to change sides. Only on Targaryen side instead of Stark. But Tyrion will probably be on the Stark side too.
Tyrion is exiled to Essos, not north. Jaime's not the bad guy in the story, Cersei is. Joffrey's dying. In the first Outline, Jaime kills everyone, so Sansa is dead. In the present story, Sansa is still alive and her story continues. They're not named, but probably Joff's siblings are in the first outline and they're dead.
There's no competition between Tyrion and Jon(Arya). It's hard to expect it at this point. We need to wait for the next encounter, but I don't think it will. Unlike the first otline, Jon and Tyrion are good friends. If GRRM designs a love triangle like the first one, maybe they can be enemies. Or maybe he changed the third candidate for that love triangle. (However, if you read Mercy POV, GRRM is waving its hand to this love triangle there.)
In general, the outline / skeleton remains exactly the same, even the characters' motives are more or less the same; there are big changes in a few places, but not so big changes in the remaining parts. Same affliction, betrayal and so on that will ensure the development of the character. Situations occurred in one way or another. It's just that things have gone differently ... but betrayal comes from the family again and (Jon) he's suffering because he can't help the family.
He keeps his end.
GEORGE: [ā€¦]As I write these last two books, Iā€™ll be moving towards the ending Iā€™ve known since 1991/
ā€œSome major characters ā€” yes, I always had plans, what Tyrionā€™s arc was gonna be through this, what Aryaā€™s arc was gonna be through this, what JonSnowā€™s arc is gonna be.Ā ā€
...
I donā€™t want to reveal what Iā€™ve planned for some of these characters, but Iā€™m pretty well on track with most of the major characters. Itā€™s minor characters like Bronn that assume greater importance.ā€
At Balticon 2016 he said he knows who sits on the Iron Throne at the end.
A year later, in a video interview he continued by saying he has always known the fates of his main characters, who lives or dies, marries who...etc since 1991 when he began writing.
That's all. Thank you for read and sorry again for my bad English. Bye.
